you kind of carved out this space for yourself.

Very quickly, so it's been really impressive to watch.

Thank you. I appreciate it.

Yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:51):
I mean I've been around golf my entire life, but
this last like i'd say, the last eighteen months or so,
I've really found kind of my lane and I'm ready
to just kind of take up space and talk about
more women's golf because it's what they deserve.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
So I'm just gonna go back a little bit. Can
you decided on how you got into golf? Was it
your dad that got you and your brother into golf?

Speaker 5 (02:12):
Yeah, so my dad was a longtime athlete, just like
he kind of came up in the Tiger Woods era,
like the late nineties, of like really loving golf and
then decided to join a club and got fitted like
kind of all the things. So he was just a
big golfer himself. And I tell the story that he
got kicked out of his force and that I used

(02:32):
to play with, and my mom was like, well, I'm
not spending all this money for a club if you're
not gonna have people to play with. So then my
brother and I were kind of the next ones up,
and we saved We saved his ass a little bit.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
He saved your marriage. Marriage exact.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
Why did he get kicked out of the foursome?

Speaker 5 (02:49):
My dad was a notorious trash talker, but then couldn't
back it up like he's he was not good enough
to talk the level of smack lady, And I think
people we're just like, yo, he's got to.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Go, we're good. We're good, bro. You've gotta love a
try for that, though, an't you.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
I love it trash talk me, but you do have
to back it up occasionally, I must say.

Speaker 5 (03:11):
And he couldn't, like I think, in any other very sport.
He was fine. Basketball, football didn't matter but like that
golf swing was atrocious, like truly.

Speaker 4 (03:20):
I mean, I do feel to trash talking golf though
it's not like any other sport where you can kind
of get away with a little bit Like golf is
so niche, isn't it? And like so technical that you
have to be extremely confident for you to trash talk.
So I feel you, but but well done saving get
you mum and Dad's marriage.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
Very proud of you, thank you.

Speaker 5 (03:42):
But yeah, I kind of was the love of fear.
I don't think. I I mean, I don't want to
say I didn't have any choice in loving golf, because
I really did, But I mean it always kind of
felt like destiny a little bit. Like my brother's a
teaching professional, so I think him and I both we
took very different avenues with the game. But ultimately it's
it was the first love of my life, and so
I'm really lucky that it's been the kind of constant

(04:05):
that I've always had.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
How did you end up at scratch?

Speaker 5 (04:10):
Crazy story? I'll try to make it as brief as
I can, but essentially, you.

Speaker 1 (04:16):
Ever heard a chat, right you could be Yeah, you
go as as you want, Okay, So I grew up
playing golf.

Speaker 5 (04:23):
I grew up in Richmond, Virginia, played competitively until I
was seventeen years old. So my senior in high school
is like kind of when the wheels fell off, the
bus got a little burnt out. Just knew I didn't
want to play collegiately. I think it's kind of the
age old tale at this point. But decided that I
just wanted to go to college be an normal student,
majored in psychology of all things, and thought that I

(04:45):
wanted to go down a very specific path of psychology
called industrial and organizational psych and it's like elite level,
Like HR is kind of the best way I can
describe it. But yeah, I just kind of like I
wanted to parts. I wanted to find my identity outside
of the Gulf world and all of my friends played.
It just kind of consumed every facet of my life.

(05:09):
But then COVID happened, and then I realized that people
like really are gonna need like the psychology that I
wanted to go into is like, okay, maybe clinical. Like
I just kind of felt like mental health became a
really important conversation for people, so like maybe I could
use my psychology degree in a different way. Turned out
that really wasn't going to work, and I didn't get

(05:30):
into grad school. So now I'm sitting here like six
weeks before I graduate college, and I'm like, oh no,
like like what am I going to do. I don't
have a job. I'm not going to grad school.

Speaker 3 (05:41):
Like we're just it's COVID. It's everybody's just beside themselves.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (05:46):
I was like, okay, I feel just like panic attacks,
slightly crying every day, just like you know, the normal,
normal things that like a twenty one year old goes through.
And my mom kind of looked at me and she
was like, you can calm down, like just take it easy,
You'll figure it out, just like go back to what
you know. And what I knew was golf. So I

(06:08):
started working for my brother. He is his own junior
golf academy where we grow up in Richmond. So I
started helping him as social and I was also just
kind of documenting like my thoughts and feelings kind of
post COVID world, just like navigating life. And I kind
of got into writing in that regard to it kind
of was more of like journaling if anything, and then

(06:28):
like over sharing on my Instagram story with like my
friends love that, and I got connected with a small
brand who had a community page. So that's kind of
how I got into like golf specific writing, and then
from there I stumbled into a small women owned newsletter
called The Nine Newsletter, which mel I believe your wife
used to write for with.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
How did Oh my god, that's so funny.

Speaker 4 (06:52):
Yeah, oh yeah, you know, she's very she doesn't think
she is, but she's anstic.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
Good at everything it does.

Speaker 5 (07:00):
I had really actually, I agree, you're fine, but I'm
very large juice to fill at the Nine. So Carly
was there, but car and it was yeah. So it

(07:22):
was like this really up and coming kind of just
news outlet. I loved the editor there. His name's Howard Megdal.
He's a big W n B, a basketball fan and
very prolific writer in that space. But he believed in
me for some reason, and I'm very glad that he did.
And I was like, but I don't really know how
to like not write for a grade. I've never done

(07:45):
that before. All I've ever known at like essays and papers.
And He's like, no, we'll figure it out. So I
took over golf coverage for this newsletter called The Nine
inspired by title nine, and so that got my foot
in the door with the l I got in touch
with a lot of people on the coms team and
just like planted that little baby seed. And then I

(08:07):
started doing some freelance work for Golf Digest in the
style space, which was really fun and exciting, and having
something as big as Golf Digest in my resume clearly impressed.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
Were you reaching out to them? Were you sending like
cold emails? How?

Speaker 3 (08:21):
That's always the thing is like.

Speaker 1 (08:22):
Like how how did Golf Digests come upon you? And
like say, you know, maybe they read something like what
was it? That was that moment of like, oh, like
we're now stepping into this next level of taking up space.

Speaker 5 (08:33):
It's a great question. Honestly, I saw someone's Instagram story
and it was an editor at Golf Digest, being like,
I need a freelancer. DMed her so quick. Their name
is Brittany Romano and she actually works at Scratch with
me now as one of our managing editors. So she's
been a big part of just my career growth and
kind of like bouncing around between these two things. So

(08:56):
I just DMed her and she was like, yeah, this
will work, Like just like, let's just.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
See for a person. Great, let's go.

Speaker 5 (09:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (09:03):
She's like, let's just see what you got and I'm like, okay, cool,
And so it just kept kind of snowballing, like I
kept saying yes to things, and I ended up finding
myself in the right conversations with the right people.

Speaker 5 (09:16):
I love to talk and I can talk to a
brick wall if I had to, and more often than not,
that gets me a lot of the opportunities that I
have kind of just been really really fortunate to have.
So yeah, I utilized social media quite a bit, just
kind of in my come up, and so the same
that lands me to the scratch of it all is

(09:37):
that's exactly what happened with this job is our editor
in chief in Boskovic DMed me and was just like, Hey,
I'm going to be at the PGA show. Would like
love to grab a drink. We met at the PGA
show in Orlando in twenty twenty four. He was like,
I'm kind of working on something, but I can't tell
you what it is. And I'm like that seems sketchy,
but like love that for you. I was like, okay, well,

(09:59):
good luck. And then in like June of last year,
he sent me another text and was just like, hey,
I can kind of tell you a little bit more
about what I'm doing. When aren't you free to talk?
And I'm like, yeah, like I was. I think I
was at the Women's PG Championship in Seattle last year

(10:21):
coming out of to Hally and I was like, Hey,
I'm like about to board a plane, but I can
call you tomorrow. And he was like, hey, I kind
of want to put together like the golf version of
the Avengers, like and I just like, I kind of.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
Just I love that.

Speaker 5 (10:35):
It's exactly He's like, I kind of just I need you.
And I'm like, okay, great, I'm a free agent. I'm like,
no one wants to hire me full time, I don't
think And he's like, well great, my gain is their loss.
So that's kind of how that happened, is just I Yeah,
I'm in people. I slide in people's dms a lot,

(10:58):
and I'm professional, yeah, likeual capacity whatever, like in.

Speaker 3 (11:02):
A professional way, don't worry creepyway.

Speaker 4 (11:04):
Exactly, a little bit of creepy doesn't go it goes far.
If you're who was I talking to yesday, I was
sliding into someone's I think it was me and Amanda,
but yeah, because I go with the vegas of Amanda
Ballionas and we were talking about just randomly wanting to
be friends with certain people.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
And I've definitely like slined someone's d MS creepily and be.

Speaker 4 (11:23):
Like, I really want to be your friend, and she
was that, so yeah, I mean you do it from
a more of a work perspective.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
I did it more of a creepy level.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
But either way, Carlie Telford, that's how you guys became friends.

Speaker 4 (11:36):
No, No, that was Evan. No, yeah, I creeply wanted
to be friends with Evan, so I just started.

Oh man, Well, that's amazing, and I think that that
hits on so many themes that mel and I talk
about a lot. It's just like being relentless of what
you're looking to do, and not taking no for an
answer and always saying yes to opportunities because you never
know what might come from it, And like you didn't
get into grad school and how great here you are.

Speaker 5 (12:34):
I ended up being the best thing that ever happened
to me. Could you imagine me being like still in school?
First of all, still being in school is I commend
everyone doing it, But it was not my past.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
You would have been great.

Speaker 1 (12:45):
You would have been a great psychologist, Like I would
have liked sitting down with you being like, these are
my problems, help.

Speaker 5 (12:50):
Me, Thank you. I have a lovely, gorgeous little orange couch.
I'm looking at that is it could be you know
at some point when maybe backup.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
I have so I have a question. So I've I
love like what you do with this.

Speaker 4 (13:07):
I love your style basically like as an all round
kind of aura. Have you always been into fashion? Have
you always had that aura since you were younger and
playing golf? Because gold fashion has changed quite a bit
in a very good way. But I just was curious
when you were like thirteen fourteen, if you had that
you know, that little niche in you, I.

Speaker 5 (13:27):
Will say gift no I honestly, I think I dressed
up like a straight up dweep when I was like
in middle school and I just didn't y'all, but like
this was bad. It was like those like eighteen inch
khaki skirts from like Morning Good, Like it just wasn't good,
Like I really that's all that was available to us.

(13:48):
We struggled though, Like I the creativity didn't really quite
get me. I will say my first introduction into like
style was I don't know if you guys remember the
TLC show What My to Wear with Stacy Yes, obsesseday,
I wanted to be what was her name, Stacy London
with that like white.

Speaker 2 (14:09):
Streak, Stacy Benette ben exactly or.

Speaker 3 (14:11):
Was that Stacy London or whatever?

Speaker 5 (14:13):
But she was great, she was iconic, and I would
remember anyway, continue I helped damn well exactly exactly, now
get on that for us. But no, I just remember
being like so all in on that show. I thought
they were so incredible. These are It was a show
for like middle aged moms, but like I just thought

(14:34):
they were so chic, so stylish, And I don't know,
that was kind of my first like, oh, like what
you wear matters, Like what you put on your body
matters it like it just it's a form of self expression.
But like genuinely you need to worry about fit in
shape and cuts of things. Like I was. I just
remember like telling my mom, like, oh, I need to

(14:55):
get like a tailor. She's like, for for what You're
like twelve, Like I don't, I don't know, but like
I want my geenes to fit just right, like I
like to hit, like my shoe at the right place.
So that was kind of an inter into fashion. And
then I would say, I really like my own personal
style really didn't evolve until I moved to New York City.
Like as cliche as that sounds, but I would leave

(15:17):
my apartment and like be a little embarrassed. I'm like, Okay, wait,
everyone looks really cool. I still look very like college
girl from Virginia who just moved here. We got to
figure something out. And I think I like max up
my credit card the first week that I lived here,
because I was like, I just need to get I
need a whole new wardrobe.

Speaker 2 (15:37):
We just have to right.

Speaker 5 (15:41):
But yeah, I think, like and to your point, golf
style has evolved so much and I'm currently in this
mode of my life of I have so many golf
clothes now, so how do I blend my golf attire
with like my everyday wear? So I think it's a
lot easier now because I think you have brands like
Melbourne and even like Adidas is really stepping it up.

(16:04):
Like there's just so there's so many options too. So
I'm trying to be a little bit more like sporty,
spice chic of like how can I be a little
bit like polished and tailored and like with touches of
feminine but like also like kind of edgy and masculine,
like playing with just different different vibes because why not?

Speaker 4 (16:22):
Yeah, can I ask what was your go to outfit
when you're like thirteen to play golf in I've what
was your favorite?

Speaker 2 (16:27):
You'd be like, I look swagging this.

Speaker 5 (16:30):
Whatever I like wore to school. And then but I
will say.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
My oh yeah, you guys don't have school uniform, do you?

Speaker 5 (16:38):
Because I would go to like the my local first
tea after school and practice. But what really set any
outfit over the top for me is I had these
like crocodile skin like pink and white echo golf shoes.

Speaker 2 (16:52):
Oh yeah, I remember them. Yeah, that's about swag as
Mel would say.

Speaker 5 (16:58):
Yes, yes, it did not matter. What else said, like
those those golf shoes, like really like I remember begging
my parents for them. I was like, guy, I have
to have, like I have to They matched my golf clubs,
like like I have about it. And they were like,
well you better wear them every day. They were like

they're two hundred dollars shoes.

Speaker 2 (17:21):
Did you wear old shoes to school?

Speaker 5 (17:23):
And some days, yeah, like you would. They were spike
those I would like slip sometimes and I'm like that
that's a little embarrassing.

Now would you wear golf shoes to school?

Speaker 2 (17:36):
Well, we had a uniform.

Speaker 4 (17:38):
Care we're very wear a.

Speaker 2 (17:41):
Blazer and a gray skirt. Dying had burgundy blazer. Oh darling, But.

Did you shoes go with the uniform?

Speaker 2 (17:48):
There? I used to wear heels. Actually it was when
I was straight. Thanks, So you.

Did not You did not wear your plastic heels to school?

No, I'd wear black heels. Yes I did, Kira.

I wore my skirt which I used get told off
for having it up too high, like.

It was just a bit slutty. Yeah, it was study.

And then these are my These were like you know,
I just had no clue what I was doing. Clearly
high heels on with a flower on the side, and
then burgundy.

represented my country in my sport.

That was my school outfit and yeah, just thrived really
to be honest with you. Wait, can I just bring
it back to you, Kira. I want to know what
your outfit was. I want to know what your bet
yours was. I can picture what yours was when you're
playing golf at like thirteen fourteen. I can just imagine it.
I can just just I want you to tell me.

Though, No, I don't think I was.

I was wearing like the same horrorle bermuda shorts that
everybody else was wearing.

And uh, pringle top, pringle top?

I was going to stay stilent.

To high school in northern California where everybody was like

I mean you could wear and we didn't have a dresscout.

sports spra.

Okay, anyway, there there are two news stories and golf
that I want to run by you guys, and then
we're going to play our game. One is it's the
Hero World Challenge. This week, Tiger gave his first press
conference for the first time since getting and yet another
back surgery. He made a joke that he's planning on

playing twenty five PGA Tour champions and PGA Tour events
next year. What did you guys think about seeing Tiger
again and the exciting vibes in the Bahamas this week?

Speaker 2 (21:33):
Anyway, now, I'll go first with mine quite quick.

Speaker 4 (21:37):
I haven't seen any of it, so my answer is
love it. Yeah, love whatevery said, I love it?

Speaker 2 (21:42):
Tiger Woods.

Speaker 4 (21:43):
That's a Tiger busy. Yeah, I've been busy, so I haven't.
Is he serious though about honestly playing twenty five?

Speaker 1 (21:49):
Was that jo?

Speaker 2 (21:50):
No, no, no, no, oh okay, the man can't move,
he's just clear. Oh okay. Well he's going to play
the seniors tour though, isn't he? I think can move thrive?

Speaker 4 (22:01):
Yeah, I mean he's got a couple more yet, he's
got another year residing tod He's fifty in December this
coming December first, isn't it December first?

A lot of praise now. I think I always enjoy
seeing Tiger's face, Like I think his his presence in
our game will always just kind of matter. I think,
no matter how you feel about him or his career
or whatever, it's still Tiger Woods at the end of
the day, so personally and like anytime we get to
see him be him, like everyone's going to pay attention.

It's the top news story for the full day. Like
that's just it is. What it is. I think he
didn't say anything that we weren't already expecting. I think
I don't know how necessary the press conference. Yeah, it's
basically just like a high like he's a give, he's well,
you're checking out, you know, Like it's just I don't know,

it felt like he's a tournament host. Like it feels
like it was maybe I don't know. I don't want
to say it was like it wasn't necessary because it
is always nice to see him, but yeah, he's he's there,
and I just I think we're I think golf is
just like in a different era of like I think
we can all understand that, like we love Tiger, we

love what he's done. I don't think that we're all
looking for our next Tiger Woods, because I think that's
a lot of weight to put on anyone or any generation.
But I think he's just kind of you know, we
move on. We were like, listen, you're if you'll play
in the Masters one more time, great, we're all gonna
love it. But it's just like, I don't know, I

don't think the role's starting to change his expectations of
what we want from him now, you know.

I think it's like I think just as a golf
fan and somebody who took up the game really because
of him, and I'm sure ninety time per cent of
people that play the game is probably that.

I obviously want to see him play majors, but it's

sound people across the board. I just think that that's
so crucial for the LPGA and their visibility and their growth.

I'm just excited just to see what that's going to
look like. I also think people need to this idea
of like these these are like quick fixes that does
not exist in the grand scheme of life. I think
nothing is a quick fix. And I think the one thing,
my one hope for everybody, I think, is to just
be a little bit more gracious with women's golf. Like, yes,

I think we can ask and demand more, but also
understand that there's a lot of groundwork we need to
make up. So it's also like things can be done
in the in the immediate front, but then also just
be very gracious that like there's effort being put into it,
players are getting on board. Like I just think we
all need to be a little bit more gracious towards

I text back immediately, I email back immediately. I'm on
top of my communication. So nothing that actually is a
priority to me is getting left in my inbox or
in my texts. And I was like, damn, I'm really
bad about this. I need to be better because I
definitely like I'll see something and you won't text back immediately,

and then I get distracted and I leave it, and
then I never text back to that person that I
was meaning to get back to, and like people that
I really should be getting back to, or something in
my emails where I can't make a decision right away
so that I just never respond. And it's like, I'm professional,
so I need to be better about my communication when
it comes to things that are professional that I care about.
