Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is straight fire with Jason McIntyre.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
What is up fire fan, It's me Jason McIntyre, straight
fall Yer for Monday, July the sixth. Hope everybody had
a safe, wonderful July fourth weekend. I was telling Rob
g that I have lived in New York, DC, Pennsylvania
(00:31):
for July fourth and now California, and I don't think
it's close. Guys. Los Angeles goes way harder on July
fourth than any other city I've been in. It's not
even close. New York is fine. DC obviously is big.
And yes, we did go down to them all a
bunch of times, you know, growing up, and that was fine.
But Los Angeles is just crazy. People are hammered early
(00:55):
in the day, the fireworks are going out till the
middle of the night, like, I mean, it is why
LA is like it's I mean, I don't know how
Rob grew up doing this, Like I would have gotten
a lot of trouble because you know, I was a
goofy guy who liked to fall in and do bad stuff,
you know, when you're only young kids. That's why my
kid is pissing me off. Anyways, it was a tremendous
(01:18):
Sports Weekend. We're recording this after midnight on the East Coast,
and I just watched The Dutton Show season finale on Paramount,
which was really good, and I smoke like three cigarettes
because I had watched Mexico England in what was I mean, maybe,
for my money, the greatest soccer match I've ever seen.
(01:40):
I know that sounds like hyperbole, but it was phenomenal.
And I'll get to that momentarily. But I've actually got
to start with the huge news. As everybody knows, today
USA Belgium in the round of sixteen. With Canada and
Mexico out, we are trying to carry the host nation flag.
We'll have to beat Belgium. But the great news Sunday morning.
I got it while I was in bed. You know,
(02:00):
July fourth, you're out late, Wake up. I'm knocking out wordle. Yes,
I still do wordle, and I still text buddies about wordle.
We have a little text chain with a couple groups,
and all of a sudden, the text start going off
Balligan's back. I'm like, what now? If you guys, remember
I was holding out hope that FIFA would do the
right thing. By every angle, it was not a red
(02:23):
card on the field. It was not a red card.
It was var that said, ooh, in slow motion, that
looks terrible. Let's give him a red and he was
sent off and then our leading score suspended. Now Balagan
celebrated over the weekend, turning twenty five years old. He's
I thought he was our best player after the Paraguay match.
(02:45):
Pulisic obviously had gotten hurt, but Balagan is sensational, and
I was holding out hope that FIFA would do the
right thing. And then of course all these Jabbroni's online.
Now there's a no appeals process. Look at the rule book.
I'm like, yeah, the rule book says a judiciary body
can just whether they're going to not get down to
a yellow, extend it to a two game suspension, or
(03:06):
kick the can down the road and say, you know what,
we're gonna let him play. We're gonna held the suspension
after the World Cup. And that's what they did. Now. Listen,
I know a certain segment of our audience, and yes,
we do kind of have an idea. Who's from where.
I love everybody? Okay, well fine, I don't love everybody.
I want to like everybody. I don't want to make
(03:27):
this political. Obviously, there are multiple credible outlets reporting that
the President of the United States called up the FIFA president, who,
of course, you know, the FIFA president gave our president
an award before the World Cup. It was one of
these fugazi awards. But nevertheless, and our president said to
(03:51):
the FIFA president, hey, what is the review process like?
And it's unclear after that what went down. I think
everybody can can you draw their own conclusions as to
what happened. But according to multiple outlets Talk Sport, which
is one of these global soccer brands, New York Times,
(04:13):
New York Post, the two presidents spoke and because the
appeal process is run by an independent board and there
was no opportunity for US to appeal, apparently, the US
government provided additional evidence that was used in this quote
unquote appeals process. What is that evidence? I don't know.
(04:36):
I am employed by Fox, I enjoy being employed by Fox,
and I'm not gonna really dig into that. Guys. I
don't know the answer a lot. It's all speculation. I'm
not gonna say crazy stuff, but I will stand by this.
I think FIFA did the right thing rescinding it. Now,
there is a story out there that, hey, Christiano Ronaldo
got a red card before the World Cup, he was
supposed to be suspended to start the World Cup. And
(04:59):
they say, yeah, it's Christiano Ronaldo. Let's not suspend him.
Let's kick it down the road. Listen, this is star treatment.
Well you don't think this crap happens in the NBA
and NFL. Come on, guys, now, I know Baligan's not
a star, but if this World Cup were happening in
say Portugal in twenty thirty, is Balagan's red card getting lifted?
I doubt it. You know, we saw the highlight where
(05:21):
Messy blatantly got someone on the Achilles in the opening
game I believe was Algeria. No card, nothing, no var check. Okay,
and so did we get preferential treatment. It's entirely possible.
I'm sorry. I know there's some of you who are
heavily principled out there and you're just pounding the table.
(05:42):
This isn't right, This isn't outrage Oh this is preposterous
that I'm sorry, I can't do that here. Oh well, Jason,
you need to have principles. I do, I mean, I
don't have every principle. If I was super principled, I
would own zero pairs of Nike shoes. I would not
have an iPhone because of all the nonsense it's going
around the world where our phones are made in our shooes.
(06:03):
I'm just not at that level. There are some things
that I can control, like CHATCHEPT. I was using that heavily.
Sam Altman came out said some stuff, did some stuff,
and I'm like, I'm out, I'm done. I'm off chat GPT.
I don't use it at all. Guess what, there's other
options to use. I'm sorry and not getting an Android phone, guys,
I'm not doing that. But the bottom line is Balligan
(06:24):
will play today. I have been working the Claude model
relentlessly to try to figure out where there is an
edge in this game. I'll give you the good and
the bad before we move on. So the good news
is Belgium fields the oldest starting eleven of any of
(06:45):
the final sixteen teams from this round in the World Cup.
The oldest. They are very old all over the place.
They are not a great team. They are formerly a
very good team. I can't I will say I bet
the US to win this game. Obviously, I bet the
money line before Balligan. After Belligan, I'm on the US
(07:06):
money line and the over two and a half goals.
This is gonna be an incredible game in Seattle. I
was actually hoping, Rob, that our USA soccer fans would
do what the Mexican fans were doing and find the
Belgium hotel on Sunday night and then just go light
off fireworks and bang drums until four in the morning
so they couldn't sleep and Belgium would be rattled. I'm
(07:28):
guessing our Seattle soccer fans are not that crazy, but Rob,
those videos, I don't know if you saw them, Like
the England bus going from the hotel to Azteca was
getting like spray painted and foamed up and they were
just firing all this stuck crazy stuff at it. It was
like scenes for a movie. Bro. I just think this
World Cup is amazing, and frankly, I'm just thrilled that
(07:49):
Baligan's gonna play and the US will be at full
strength against Belgium, hoping to take down a European power
and then advance to play Spain, which would be Friday
at so far, assuming of course, Spain gets by Portugal.
But Rob, I don't know. I don't want to dig
too weirdly into the Balligan stuff. I think I think
(08:11):
they made the right call.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
Yeah, one thousand percent, And let me just speak on
behalf of all Mexicans out there were built different. So yes,
you will not be seeing American fans doing anything like that.
It's a quote the our friends and our listeners down
in the SEC country.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
It just means more. Now.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
It was unfortunate that, you know, we lost on Sunday,
even though we had the home field advantage at Asteca
with the altitude and all that stuff. But from all
the reporting I saw, they said that England, at least
inside the stadium showed up in a big way that
it instead of it being you know, ninety ten or
eighty five fifty, was closer to like sixty five, thirty five,
sixty forty. So good on England for showing up and
(08:49):
not letting all the Shenanigans get in their way, and
they were performing a high level. As far as the
Balligan thing, I don't understand why people would be upset
about it, because any objective sports fan, not even just
an American, or not even just an American, soccer fan
could tell you that that penalty did not rise to
(09:09):
the letter of the law of a red card, because
you know, you had to be malicious intent, and there
was no intent when we watched it happen in real time.
That's why there was not even a yellow given out
at the time when it happened initially. And when you
run anything super slow motion, frame by frame, no matter
what it is, it's gonna look worse. I don't want
to go too much on a tangent, but the Caitlin
(09:30):
Clark fists to the throat that got everyone hot and
bothered about a week and a half ago. In real time,
it was bang bang, she girls getting up and she's
running the opposite direction. Nobody was calling a foul. But
then you run it in super slow motion and it
looks like she gets full punched in the throat, and
that's not what happened. That's not what happened. And so
I'm glad that FIFA took it upon themselves to say,
(09:53):
whatever legal jargon we have to slam this under whatever,
you know, weird precedents that we we have somewhere in
this rule book. Let's find a way to wrong or
right and say, hey, that did not deserve a red card.
We cannot rescind it because that's not what we have
in our rules. But we have a way that we
can suspend it. We can postpone it. And according to
(10:14):
what I read on ESPN, it's being suspended for an
entire calendar year. So that goes to show you that,
you know, it didn't really reach to the level what
everyone was talking about. And so if you are a
sports fan, whether it's the World Cup, whether it's the
Super Bowl, the NBA Finals, the World Series, you want
to see the best against the best. You want to
see my best team against your best team, and may
(10:37):
the best one win. And now that bat again is
healthy and available, you're gonna see the best usas to
offer versus the best of the opponent, and we'll see
what happens.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
I'll go with USA two to one. I will just
say our defense has been incredible. Rob one goal against Paraguay,
given up zero against is it Australia or New Zealand?
I forgot who play Australia. No, Australia, Australia, Yeah, and
then zero against Bosnia. Now, obviously Belgium is a step
up in class from all those, but I do think
we've got some dynamic players. I think we're gonna be
(11:10):
all right. Now. I do want to just spend a
moment on this England Mexico match, which was just riveting,
captivating television. I didn't realize it was sixty five thirty five.
I thought it would be eighty twenty ninety ten, but
the England fans traveled pretty well. I just it was.
It was incredible. And you know, I post anytime. I
(11:34):
don't do the newsletter because of time or whatever. I
post on ig and the model loved first half under
under for the game. But England probably advances somehow because
they because of the way. A lot of what the
model does is look at how the odds have shifted
and why. And one thing that it barely touched on
(11:55):
was Jude Bellingham and I was like, let me go.
Jude Bellingham first goal and it was such an awesome hit.
And then he scored again, and then Harry Kinge scored.
I mean it was in Mexico. Of course, didn't quit.
They kept fighting back. England got a red card, which
I thought was similar to Balligan's. Now his was an
actual challenge, but he hit the ball. Then his foot
comes up after hitting the ball and hits the guy
(12:16):
in the ankle, and it's like, I don't see how
he's at fault, but I guess with the studs up
what you're supposed to angle your foot a certain way.
It's just so weird some of these calls. I didn't
think it was a red. England somehow held on for
just a great win. It was incredible TV. Earlier Sunday,
Norway took down Brazil in what wasn't as big of
(12:37):
an upset is as I think everybody else out there thought.
But this was not a great Brazil team. I think
we covered it on the podcast, definitely on the Herd.
And again Norway has arguably the best scorer in the world.
I know him. Bappe's great and Messi's awesome, but Holland
is a monster. Some people are saying if the US
rob had our best athletes playing soccer, that we would
(13:01):
have like Earl Holland's all over the field, and you know,
it's tough for me to envision like a good amount
of six eight forwards. I know Peter Crouch, the England
guy from back in the day soccer, is just such
a fast, quick sport. It's it's just tough for me
to envision a guy like Lebron, you know, being a
(13:23):
center forward and scoring goals like Holland. Holland sixty four.
So if you want to take a wing or a guard,
I don't know who. Davion Mitchell, I don't know why
he just came to mind. Is like a quick twitch guy.
Alex Caruso. Yeah, like I don't know Rob, you can
name guy like who are the twitchiest, fastest skilled guys
who are like a six six an under. I don't
know that Sga, he's too slow motion. But whoever they are,
(13:46):
or Earling Holland is him. I mean that header was
back and then he got one lefty shot. They gave
him like three feet of space. He just nutmegs the
defender on a rocket and Brazil's going home. So now
England Norway next Saturday. Remember my pick before the World
Cup was England, although my biggest futures paydays are Spain
and France. But I do like this England team and
(14:10):
Jude Bellingham was just sensational. I told his story. So
we were in Europe two years ago in London during
the Euros and That was when Jude Bellingham was just
having an amazing tournament and I tried. I'm like, oh,
I'm want to go get a Jude Bellingham jersey. So,
you know, I start walking around downtown in London. I'm like, oh,
here's a sports store. Let me go in. I'm like, hey,
(14:31):
I need a Jude Bellingham jersey. And the guys are
like laughing at me, like, pre come on, bro, We're
sold out. And that was at like every sports store out.
It would be like trying to go to Times Square,
New York City in the middle of the World Series
when Aaron Judge is on a hystoric terra and nobody
(14:51):
had his jersey anywhere, you know, and I was disappointed.
Jude Bellingham was so freaking good in that game. England's
a fun watch, Mexico's got a bright future, Holland. Obviously,
I mean the World Cup, all the stars are surviving
and advancing. Hell Friday, Messi's team almost got knocked out,
Argentina was on the ropes. But rob any other World
Cup thoughts before we pivot to the NBA real quick,
(15:14):
Just a quick one, Holland.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
If you are how do I articulate this unless your
team is playing against Norway. So if you're a Brazil fan,
I understand, But as an American, as a USA fan,
as a Mexican, as a Mexican fan, Mexico fan, if
you are not rowing the boat with Norway, like what
are you even doing? Because that team and that particular player, Holland,
(15:40):
has captivated the imagination of the world during this tournament,
Like everybody wishes that they were Norwegian right now when
they see him play. He's a big, old blonde Viking
six five two fifteen. He looks like a man child
out there against the rest of these, you know, average
size soccer players. And not only is he good and
their team is good, but they have the row of
(16:02):
the boat celebration out of every match that gets the
entire stadium, even some brazil fans wanting to do it.
That's how cool it is.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
So if USA.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
Is not gonna win it, give me gimme Norway all
the way.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
Wow, wild stuff.

Speaker 2 (16:29):
Also, wild Rob. I don't know if you've seen this video.
We didn't talk about it, but Lebron was in Akron
over the weekend and there's a video of him singing
and dancing at three in the morning. Have you seen this?
I have, yes, and I'm like, wait a minute. I mean, okay,
it's summer. Maybe he you know, maybe Lebron's enjoying some
(16:52):
like superstar summer. But this isn't Europe with the twenty
sixteen Calves. I don't know who he is with, but
Lebron's like singing and dancing. Everybody's watching him. That looks
like a guy who's going back to Cleveland, does it not.
Speaker 3 (17:08):
I have a hard time imagining that he's leaving the
West Coast.
Speaker 2 (17:14):
Whoa spicy I mean, because he has so the West
Coast means Warriors. The Warriors, Yes, okay.
Speaker 3 (17:21):
I've always believed it wasn't the Lakers, it was gonna
be the Warriors because I thought there was three legitimate options.
It was return of the Lakers. I thought that was
most likely, and I was wrong. I thought the Warriors
were second and last, but not least, which was a
zero percent chance him retiring, because I thought there was
no way he's going to retire. Without the Farewell tour,
and he has said repeatedly on podcasts, on locker room videos,
(17:45):
post game videos, how important it is to be around
for his daughter because he was not around a lot
with Brownie and with Bryce. You know, he's in Cleveland,
he's in Miami, He's traveling all around doing all kinds
of things. And he's like, Hey, now that I'm near
the end of my rope, I want to and as
much time as possible with my daughter. That means a
lot to me to be a present father. His daughter
(18:06):
has spent basically her entire life in Los Angeles. She
is embedded in the volleyball community here in southern California.
I think you know that for a fact, there is
no good way that he is going to get up
and leave his family to go play in Cleveland. I
do not see that happening. I do not see him
going be interested. I see him shooting up on the PJ,
(18:28):
whether it's his or it's Nikes, three or four times
a week, coming from Golden State down to La probably
an hour door to door, no problem.
Speaker 2 (18:36):
So the only pushback would be, Okay, yes, he doesn't
want to miss her childhood. What about she's probably. My
daughter is going into eighth and Lebron's daughter was at
a tournament playing up, So my guess is she's going
into sixth grade. Lebron would probably miss Yeah, the he
(19:00):
would be there for the beginning of the school year
when is trading camp like September October, ye season, regular
season ends in April, playoffs or and ordeal. He would
miss a lot of her sixth grade year. That's it.
Isn't this any different than someone getting stationed in a
(19:20):
certain place for a certain time period or a dad
moving his family for a job. I don't it's not
any different.
Speaker 3 (19:28):
But this would be him choosing this, him choosing to
put his own self interest that of what he says
most matters the most, which is his family.
Speaker 2 (19:36):
But he did technically he didn't have the choice to
stay in LA because, as everybody's reported, the Lakers did
not offer him a contract. You know, so yes for
that Golden State makes sense. It just to me, the
Golden State thing still remains weird, like, sure they need him,
(19:58):
but that is as Kevin Durant found O, that's Steph
Curry's team. That Steph Curry's franchise at seph Curry's home
in Cleveland. Who's the leader of that team, Rob, And
I know you're gonna say Donovan Mitchell, but think on it.
Speaker 3 (20:12):
It would kind of have to be on here. I mean,
if you're saying James Harden, that's an even worse answer.
Speaker 2 (20:16):
Right, And it ain't Havin Mobley, it's not Jared Allen.
It's Lebron. And so he will be able to walk
into the setting where he's the man. I'm not saying
the offense runs through him, but he don't have to
take a back seat to anybody in Miami. He's taking
a back seat Toiannis and Bam, that's just not happening.
I know, I know. Rich Paul's got some whiteboard. It's
(20:39):
so funny, Rob. Rich Paul basically started a podcast mid season, right.
We should have all known at the time that Lebron
was gone at that point. That's the reason he started
this podcast so he could kind of control and shape
the narrative of Lebron. And that's what he's doing with
this silly whiteboard. And like, look at these ten teams, Nicks,
give me a fucking bop TI, there's no check nts.
(21:00):
He's going to the next Roup. There's zero chance he's
going to the Spurs. He's not going to go to
a team where they have an established guy. Now the
Dwayne Wade initially in Miami when he went with two
thousand and nine eight whatever it was, Wade had won
a title and that was his his franchise, his city.
But Lebron was at the height of his powers. We're
talking about like an MVP joining the team. Come on,
(21:25):
Dway Wade was ever a regular season MVP. So I
Lebron goes there, I think they probably. I mean, what
is Donovan Mitchell? He's been a one conference finals? James
harden Is I think, oh and two? Or Owen three
in the conference finals? Oh no, no, he did when
he was there in Oka. See I'm sorry. He one
in three in conference finals? Are one and two?
Speaker 1 (21:43):
And no.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
He got there twice in Houston, once in Cleveland, so
he's definitely one in three. Maybe, Oh Brooklyn, I don't know.
Evan Mobley, Jared Out, this guy's think they need to
learn how to win from Lebron. So to me, Cleveland
does make sense. Now, it's gonna be a little awkward
if Cleveland's like, well, we don't actually have a whole
lot of money to offer you, so what we can
(22:06):
do is maybe off for you. I don't know. I'm
just gonna pick Rob five million dollars, so sam Merrill's
making eight point four. I don't think there's a world
where Lebron's gonna take less than sam Merril. He's probably
gonna make them get rid of Max Strus, or maybe
they have to do it to avoid the second Apron.
(22:26):
Harden will have to take a more significant pick cut
than he wanted. Or it's like, hey, Bro, hit the road,
go go go find us, go good luck, you know,
and Lebron's gonna end up getting what two for twenty
is that? Is there a world where he makes that?
I don't know some number that is palatable to Lebron.
I know'll have a shot. I actually think they will
(22:47):
be much better than the Heat in the East. I
think they're could be more dangerous than the Celtics. I
think they're probably more dangerous than the than the Sixers.
And we haven't even talked about Jaylen Brown yet. But
let's wrap on Lebron real quick. Rob. Do you think
Cleveland makes sense for a basketball perspective?
Speaker 3 (23:06):
I mean, I can't think of a. I mean, I
guess I could, but it would be a very, very
clunky fit because James Harden, as we know well documented,
unless he has the ball in his hands, is absolutely useless.
He does not move around, He does not set screens,
he does not crash the boards. He is I'm dribbling
the ball up top high screen and roll. And if
I'm not doing that, I'm just gonna stand here, not
(23:27):
even at three point nine. I'm going to stand like
at the hash or top, you know, near mid court.
Jared Allen can't shoot, Evan Mobley can't shoot Lebron. James
is at this place, in this stage in his career,
cannot defend wings. So what do you have. You have
Lebron who's at his best still with the ball in
his hands. If he wants to play off ball, sure,
(23:47):
but he needs space to operate. How is he going
to operate in space when you have two non shooting
seven footers on.
Speaker 2 (23:53):
The floor with the at all times.
Speaker 3 (23:54):
So unless the plan is let's bring in Lebron for
one year farewell tour, it's going to have a documentary
attached to it, according to Yahoo Sports. So if we're
gonna do that and we're gonna trade away Jared Allen
the future, Like why you think that Lebron and Jared
Allen out makes you a championship? I don't see that.
(24:16):
And then it's like, all right, well we're going on Miami.
What if Giannis and mam well the same issue. You know,
those guys can shoot like Lebron James as great as
he is, and he is awesome. He is, for my money,
the second best player ever. Yeah, I think you have
him first. He requires a certain type of team around
him to maximize his abilities, even more so now than
(24:37):
he did ten fifteen years ago. He needs defenders, he
needs space, and that's how he's at his best. Very
similar to like the Luka Doncic type. So if you
shrink the floor and you ask Lebron at age forty
two to go from defending slow footed power forwards to
now explosive small forwards, like what, You're not getting the
(24:59):
best out of him that one anyways, So if it
was just about basketball, go to Philly, Go to Philly,
go to Boston, you know what I mean, Like where
the fit is cleaner, where you have guys who can
make up for what you are lacking. And I don't
think either one of those is a serious Like Minnesota
would be a good fit if that's what we're talking about.
Speaker 2 (25:20):
Basketball wise, comedy, LaMelo ball, he would drive Lebron crazy.
Speaker 3 (25:25):
Yeah, but Lebron would be the point guard. He'd be like,
all right, you guys, go over there. Jada McDaniel's covers
all the the defense a man, Rudy Gobert defend. I'll
do all the playmaking. So it's really tricky to find
a great basketball fit for Lebron James without making it
look like he is trying to Kevin Durant his way
to a championship.
Speaker 2 (25:46):
So you mentioned Philly, and we you know, we've been
so busy the holiday might travel up to Santa Clara.
We haven't even touched on Jalen Brown being traded to
the Sixers. I don't know, Rod, do we do one
minute on it? Five zero zero? Oh my gosh, right,
let's do it. Let's just let's knock it out now.
Let me call it the old Sixers depth chart.
Speaker 1 (26:06):

Speaker 2 (26:18):
It was on the day of the USA Bosnia game.
It kind of got snowed under a little bit. Jalen
Brown was traded from the Celtics to the Sixers in
exchange for Paul George to first two seconds something like that.
Maybe a couple swaps out of whatever it was, doesn't matter.
And at first, when I started getting text about it,
(26:38):
I was like, well, that doesn't make sense. Why would
they do that? And then you start to think about it,
and you're like, holy cow. Essentially Boston needs to just
get the hell off of Jalen Brown. They need to
get him off the roster, get him out. It was
too toxic. Something happened. Now everybody's trying to do this
breakdown of Jason Tatum Versusjyalen Brown. I personally don't think
that was it. I saw a crazy and I do mean,
(26:59):
do you mean crazy rob breakdown of on one of
these Instagram reels. Look at look at who owns the
Celtics and they got into this whole. It's the war
machine in America. They make this and that, and Jalen
Brown's very anti war and that's why they should And
I was like, Wow, we're going heavy. So in the
(27:23):
absence of hard facts and information, people just reach for shit.
This just happens, whether it's sports or whatever. And I
don't think Boston has totally articulated why they made this move,
but I will say I think it was Tom Habers
have We had Tom haberstroll on the podcast, probably had
(27:43):
a time, Okay, so he had a fascinating piece. Pretty
I'm going aheading to guess it was given to him by, uh,
the Celtics, right, because it's basically the analyst say Jalen
Brown does a fit. It's like four or five paragraphs
about Jalen Brown, so awesome, such a good guy, he's
(28:05):
such a nice player, he wins a lot. Oh but
let's get to the analytics. The Celtics were better with
Jalen Brown off the floor, according to some advanced metrics
last season, better than him with him off the floor.
And then you could go to basic stuff like he
didn't play last year, Celtics went nine and two without
(28:26):
him and their defense was incredible, and then it's like, oh, wow,
well what about like the last three years when he
doesn't play, and there's something ridiculous like thirty eight and
eight without Jalen Brown. Oh, I'm sorry. No. In the
last four seasons without Brown, they're forty seven and ten,
(28:46):
And it's like, whoa, Okay, now that's interesting. And you
start looking at these on off splits and it's like, well,
why are they worse with Jalen Brown on? And then
then it comes to well, well, look at his assistant
to turnover ratio. Guys, he doesn't have a good handle.
That was exposed in the finals when they lost to
(29:07):
the Warriors. I mean it's been an issue for years.
He essentially when he drives to the bucket. The Celtics
system is drive, suck the defense in and kick for threes.
We've got Derek White, We've got Peyton Pritchard, we got
Jason Datum. That's what we want you to do. And
he drives and takes bad two pointers or takes like
ten footers, or he turns it over. And I saw
(29:29):
some of these assist rate numbers rob where Derek White
had a better assist numbers than Jalen Brown, who had
a much higher usage rate. Peyton Pritchard had better assist
numbers in the analytics, not just regular assists. Okay, the
Celtics are beyond the whole points per game, assists per game,
we're talking about when you're on the floor, net rating
(29:52):
who you're playing alongside, Like Peyton Pritchard is more of
a developer, and so is Derek White than Jalen Brown.
And so at that point it's tough for Brown to
have an All NBA season, finished sixth or whatever he
finished it in the MVP voting, and then for Jalen
Brown to come out and say that was my favorite
season ever. Oh wait a minute, Jason Tatum's coming back,
(30:13):
and they clearly, whether it's right or wrong, they viewed
Tatum as their number one guy. He does the driving
kick great. When he's off the floor, they're not as great.
I know he was off all last season. There the
Celtics have a good system. So Robin essentially comes down
to we don't think Brown. It would be how about this,
(30:34):
Now this isn't apples to apples, but it'd be like
if I took a week off the podcast and Rob
G filled in and crushed it, and then Rob G
said that was more fun than I've ever had. And
then Rob's like, I don't want to go back to producing, man,
I want to I want this. I want this to
be my I want my own podcast. I'm done with this.
And it sounds like Jalen Brown didn't really want to
(30:56):
go back to being one B or two or whatever
you want to call him. Robin. He just didn't wasn't
interested in that, and the Celtics were like, well, we
don't want this to be an issue all season. He's
got a massive contract, and when you start looking at
the contract, it's brutal. Guys. Now, I saw some people
going getting a little crazy saying he's the seventh best
player on their team, but if you look at wind
(31:18):
shares per forty eight minutes, he actually ranked seventh on
their team. So then it's like, well, Jalen Brown a
top twenty guy in the league. Are you including salary
or not? Because I mean, rob I'm sure you saw this.
Jalen Brown's making like fifty seven million dollars a year,
Peyton Pritcher's making eight. Is Jalen Brown seven times the
(31:39):
player of Peyton Pritchard. No, he's done, So they tried
to get off him, and that's when other teams were like, whoa, no, thanks,
and nobody wanted him. So the only place you could
really trade him was basically for a guy who makes
a ton of money like he does Paul George, and
isn't in his prime and isn't really considered a winning player,
(32:02):
I mean not anymore. He was in Indiana way back.
But it's like, sure Philly would do that deal. I'm
surprised they didn't try to get Edgecombe. So this is
just the Boston point of view. Will do Philly in
a second, but rob from a Boston point of view,
it took me a little bit to understand it. But
I understand the trade, and I actually think they're gonna
be fine next year. Went over fifty games, I mean,
alf Tatum goes down there screwed. But they'll be fine
(32:25):
next year, I think. And I actually think they're gonna
be pretty dangerous given the wings they've accumulated.
Speaker 3 (32:30):
Oh one thousand percent, I think. I put out a
tweet a couple of days ago where I said, do
I think the Celtics sold low on Jalen Brown? Yes?
I do, because even with all of his analytic issues
and the contract and you know, his reputation around the league,
you know, not being too great, do I think the
Celtics are still set up? He went out Jalen Brown
(32:53):
to win fifty three plus games this season and be
a top three seed. Yes, I do, because their style
of play lends itself to being very successful in the
regular season. That's number one, Like they shoot a lot
of threes, they defend the three well across an eighty
two game season. The analytics say you're gonna win a
lot of games like that just by the style of play.
That's not factoring in Jason Tatum is back. He's your
(33:15):
best player. So if you replaced one to one Jaylen
Brown for Jason Tatum, you would imagine that your team
is better just by having a better player. On top
of that, even at age thirty six, and even if
he only gives you forty five games, Paul George for
forty five games at h and thirty six is better
than not having Jason Tatum at all like they had
basically all last season. Right. So I believe that this
(33:38):
upcoming season that the Boston Celtics are gonna be very
good in the regular season. We'll see in the playoffs,
because I don't know if they have the high end
talent to match up with some of the other teams
that we have now in theas your conference, but they're
gonna be just fine. And for Jalen Brown to continue
this very odd you know, twitch podcast thing where he's
(34:00):
taking shots at everybody, or even his statement away from
Boston never thank the organization for what they did and
gave him that MAX contract and you help them win
a championship. You know, he seems to have this me
against the world attitude, like he he cannot fathom why
they did this to him or why guys like Colin
or Steven A are saying things about his reputation around
the league. And it's like, bro, every team had a
(34:23):
chance to trade for you, and the end result was
basically a salary dump because the consensus was just to
get off the Paul George contract, you had to give
up a first round pick. So you're telling me that
I got Jalen Brown for Paul George and two first
round picks. So basically what you're saying is the cost
to get an MVP caliber wing locked up for the
(34:44):
next few seasons is one first round pick. That should
tell you all you need to know about how the
rest of the league sees you, whether it's the analytics
or your personality or both. There is something about you,
Jalen Brown, that people do not like, and that the
Boston Celtics believe that it could be an addition type
by subtraction kind of thing for them and they're better
(35:05):
off without him.
Speaker 2 (35:07):
It's harsh, but I mean, it's weird that we agree
because an initial reaction was these guys are gonna what
are they doing? Now? I do actually think this Mitchell
Robinson addition is way bigger than Paul George. Again, his
stats tremodus four points, five rebounds or whatever. But rob
he does exactly what they want. Hey man, protect the
(35:29):
rim they didn't have that last year and go get
us offensive rebounds. He is one of the literal best
players at his positioned in doing that, I'm surprised the
Lakers didn't make a move for him. He does have
an injury history, can't shoot free throws, but Rob I
think very highly of Boston Now. The Philly angle is
interesting on paper, where nobody ever wins championships. The Sixers
(35:51):
starting lineup might be one of the best in the league.
Tyrese Maxi is an ascending star.
Speaker 1 (35:56):
VJ.
Speaker 2 (35:56):
Edge Comb is really good plus defender. I mean, I
think he's going to be an All Star in this league.
Jalen Brown needs no introduction. Dean Wade. You know, they
got a power forward who hits threes in defense, and
then Joel Embiid, who is a former MVP not that
long ago. On paper, that's one of the best starting
fives in the league, probably top four or five starting fives.
(36:18):
The problem is MAXI high usage, high volume guy. Jalen
Brown needs the ball in his hands, wants the ball
in his hands, thinks he deserves the ball in the
hands all the time. And then Joel Embiid. Shocker, this
is my franchise. I'm the man. I mean, the history
of playoff utility is very strong. But he's really talented,
(36:41):
rob I don't they don't have enough basketballs for this
team to be good. Yes, they will fall out of
bed and win fifty games on talent alone. And Forredy
Simon's coming off the bench. He's not bad. Man Bona,
the big kid from UCLA. I like him, power forward.
You know, maybe they get someone else. I don't know
if Carlow or Justin Edwards. I don't know if they're
(37:02):
strong there. But you could always play Brown at the
four and have Simons if you need another shooter, or
maybe you find a lockdown defender. I don't know. Bottom
line though, I can see this team imploding in the
first round of the playoffs because you know the games
are truncated. Tyrese Maxey, I mean, let me just humor me, Rob,
(37:23):
Do you want to guess how many shots Tyrese Maxi
averaged per game against the Celtics and then the Knicks
in the playoffs twenty two? Okay, close. Against the Celtics
he averaged twenty one shots a game. Nice, and then
against the Knicks it was down to fifteen. Now, some
(37:45):
of that had to do with just two massive blowouts.
They didn't he wasn't on the court long. There's I mean,
you're putting Jalen Brown into the starting lineup. What do
you think the shot allocation is for Brown, Maxie and Embiid? Rob,
And you know the media is gonna be really hunting
once they start hyping, well, Joel Embiid's team, Tyre's Maxey's
(38:08):
and I mean Terrys Masey's twenty five he's really freaking good.
And Jaylen Brown was well, guys, I was second team
All NBA and I am still in my prime and
I averaged twenty one shots a game last year for
the Celtics when I was the man. So I don't
think there's a world where you can have Maxi twenty
one shots, Brown with twenty one EMBIID with what seventeen.
(38:32):
I don't know that that's gonna work. And I have
real questions about this team now Again. Regular season, they'll
be fine, but my questions are in the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (38:43):
Yeah, I think that's absolutely one fair. I mean what
we've learned this past season especially, but even more, you know,
if you want to spend it out in the last
two seasons, it's so much less about the top half
of your roster and who your best player is, and
everything about who your worst player is and how they
all fit together. Because if you're just going by talent,
(39:07):
then how on earth did our New York Knicks run
rough shot through the entire NBA playoffs. It's not because
they had a talent advantage across the entirely is that
they're five guys who they put out at any one time.
Speaker 2 (39:19):
They never had a week link number one and number two.
Speaker 3 (39:22):
Every single one of those guys filled a very important
role at various points throughout the playoffs. If it was
Jalen Brunson being your lead scorer, it's like, all right, cool,
OG's gonna defend his ass off. Heart's gonna defend. Mccal's
gonna defend on a night where Jalen Brunson doesn't have
it going, Kat, you got to step up a little bit.
Mccal got to step up a little bit. Og, you
(39:42):
play more defense. Mitchell Robbinson gets some boards. Josh Hart
like there was a certain way that they operated as
a unit, as a collective that helped them overwhelm the
rest of the league. San Antonio could not do that
on a night to night base because they're so young.
They haven't developed those roles too well. I think, okay,
see have done it, but half their guys were hurt.
So it's like, what are you gonna do when you
(40:03):
get into the playoffs and all of your best players
want to do the same thing. How the hell is
that going to work. It's the same issue that I
said that if Lebron goes to Cleveland, the talent level
is off the charts, but the fit is going to
be very clunky and awkward. And if Jalen Brown thinks
that he's going to show up in Philadelphia and at
(40:25):
the same usage and style of play that he had
in Boston, then he's going to be in for rude awakening,
especially when you consider I believe it was a friend
of the show. Brian Windhorst said over the weekend that Philadelphia,
even with Jaylen Brown on the roster, is moving into
this season and for the foreseeable future with the expectation
that we are building around Maxi Edgecombe. That is our foundation.
(40:48):
Those are the guys that we're featuring. You think Jalen
Brown is gonna be happy being third fiddle when he
wasn't happy being second fiddle in Boston. Like this could
go sideways very quickly. They might out talent you on
a night Tonight base. When we get to the playoffs
and all these teams know each other and they know
their rules. To your point, it could flame out spectacularly
(41:10):
in round one.
Speaker 2 (41:11):
Man, Jalen Brown, what do they say out of the
frying pan into the pot? That's a phrase like my
parents use when I was a kid. It feels like
that's Jalen Brown. Hey, be careful what you ask for?
Isn't that like saying be careful what you wish for
the grass is not always greener. You're with a girl
for a long time and you're like, I could do
better than this. You break up with her and you're
just on the struggle bus dating apps wise, guys, just
(41:34):
be careful out there. Jalen Brown, Hey, you wanted it,
you asked for it, You got a buddy. Good luck,
all right, Everybody go root for the USA today. Spain's
obviously going to be Portugal, and then I'll go USA
over Belgium to one enjoy it. See tomorrow.
