On today's episode, Jason discusses why the masses seem to be turning on Victor Wembanyama in the wake of some of his on- and off-court actions during the NBA Finals, whether the rumors linking LeBron James to the Golden State Warriors hold any water, why it feels like everybody is overreacting to Brendan Sorsby's 'gambling problem' now that he's declared for the NFL Supplemental Draft, and what to look for in Tuesday's incredible World Cup slate.

Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
What is up, Straight Fire Fan, It's me Jason McIntyre,
Straight Bowyer for Tuesday, June sixteenth. I'm still riding high
my New York Knicks NBA champions and now you kind
of just sift through the carnage and the wreckage. I mean,
people are losing their minds, honestly, and not not just

(00:35):
about the Knicks. We're talking about Victor Wembiniama. I mean, guys,
I don't really know what we're doing here at this point.
I'll start with the Nick. We'll do some World Cup,
and I'll do some hot takes I've seen out there
that are just crazy, and of course the Brandon Sowarsby stuff.
But I just want to start with one of the
most asinine takes I saw. It was from a someone

(00:58):
who ended up blocking me. I don't have exactly what
she said, but essentially some she's a writer, She's not
like an NBA writer, and you know, she jumped in
on the hey, let me capitalize, get some clicks off
the necks, let me engagement farm off Wemby, and she
wrote a big piece essentially saying Wemby was a talented asshole.

(01:21):
Those are the words she used. And it's like, oh,
he didn't shake hands after losing Game five, Okay, I
get that. Okay, people want to rip it. Fine, didn't
shake hands. It's not like this is the first time
an NBA star has not shaken hands with the opponent
after losing the championship. Totally get that. Well, he threw

(01:44):
that vicious elbow against the Timberwolves. Okay, he did throw
an elbow. Yeah, he's also not the first player to
throw an elbow, and one elbow thrown makes you an asshole. Okay,
I was unaware of that. And then it's like, well,
he's look at some of these look at some of
the these clips, and it looked this was like an
illegal screen and people just going in like they want
to hammer hammer Wemby. And then you got, you know,

(02:06):
my guy, Doug got leave and shout out to Doug.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
We talk.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
You know, we're fine. I believe I owe my a
text message. But he's coming out and essentially saying, listen,
you guys want to put Wemby in the goad category. Hey,
what about Magic Johnson? I mean Wemby's in year three
he lost the finals. Magic is a Rookie one Finals MVP.
I'm like, cand we just get some context. Doug wembin
Yama joined a tire Fire in San Antonio. In his

(02:32):
rookie year. He led the team in points per game,
rebounds per game, blocks, shot attempts. He went to a
total disaster. Magic at twenty joined a stack Deck, a
Laker team that was in the second round of playoffs
the year before, Jabbar won MVP of the league. And oh,
by the way, they didn't lean on Magic to do everything,

(02:53):
because hey, we we have Norm Nixon. We got all
this great team. Magic took the fourth amount of shots
per game field goal times per game on that team,
like the apples and freaking grapefruits or apples and Toyota
Camrys or something. I don't know. I don't know what
the comparison is, but it's like people are losing their
minds bending over back. We're trying to disc discredit wembin

(03:16):
Yama because he lost in the finals in year three.
Do you guys even to remind you, we talked about
the shack swept when he was in Orlando by Elijah
Onon Lebron twenty two swept Michael Jordan to get to
the finals until year seven in the league. Guys, really,

(03:38):
we're gonna hammer Wemby for this. I mean, I get it.
If you don't like him. You know, he's a smart, articulate,
thoughtful individual. He gives good interview at the podium. We're
talking about a guy who plays chess in Washington Park
Square Washington Square Park. Whoops, haven't been in New York
in a minute. Everything about Wemby screams Yeah, I like this.

(04:00):
I wanted to be the face of the league. I mean, listen,
we can always you want to dredge up everybody's negativity.
Everybody's got dark stuff. Kobe Bryant, I mean, Anthony Edwards
drops f bombs in every postgame interview, and I'm a
huge Anthony Edwards fan. Zion Williamson is trying to have
big babies with every stripper in New Orleans. Okay, that's
a little harsh, but guys, you could poke holes in

(04:21):
every single person in the league. I mean, how many
coaches do guy Magic Johnson get fired? How many times
if Patrick Ewing come up empty? Oh wait? Jalen Brunson
at the Knicks party said f wemb Okay, Yeah, like
Basketball's heated. What are we doing, guys, It's just very

(04:42):
strange that we love Wemby. He takes down to defending
champs on the road in Game seven, okay, one of
the great playoff games in NBA postseason history, that Game
one performance against the thunder Like, can we just stop hating?
I know it's easy, let's just hate everyone. The Wemby
stuff has just gotten overboard. Now. I will say, if

(05:03):
you want to make a have a credible discussion on
the greatest NBA teams of all time, Undeniably, for me,
the Curry KD Warriors are the most dominant team ever,
sixteen to one in the playoffs. The lone game they
lost the Cavs set a record for three pointers in
the game. That team was a absolute juggernaut. I mean, hell,

(05:26):
they won seventy three games and then added a top
five player in the league. Like they were unstoppable. I
think they could beat any team in the history of
basketball soundly in a seven game series. That's how dominant. Again,
it was prime Curry, prime prime Clay prime Draymond prime KD.
Like they were just ridiculously loaded. I would say the

(05:47):
second best team, oh one, Lakers, Kobe and Shaq tour
through the postseason. I think they were fifteen in one
because they were only three first round series as best
of five. They were utterly dominant Kobe and were just unstoppable.
Their loan loss was the Alan iverson game one of
the finals. That was a I mean, we forget how

(06:09):
dominant Shaq was that. I know we'd get prisoner of
the moment and guys, I was talking with some dads
hanging out for watching one of the finals games, and
I was like, Shaq would kind of break Wemby right,
and they all universal agree, Oh my gosh. I mean
Shaq was like three point fifty. Like if he got
in the post. I mean, sure Webby's gonna block some

(06:31):
of his shots, but by and large, Shack is going
to go through him. I don't know. I don't recall
how people stop Shack. His kryptonite was free throw shooting.
But there's a reason he won three finals in a row,
in three finals MVPs in a row. Guys, we haven't.
We've gone the last eight years with eight different champions.

(06:53):
Shaq won three of those in a row. The Denver
Nuggets were supposed to Oh my gosh, they're built for this,
Who's top of the Nuggets? Oh wait, wait a minute,
it's the Celtics, the great roster of the Celtics. And
then it was the Thunder. Oh geez, they're set They're
so set up. It's just the league is way better.
That's the only reason at Laker second, the league is

(07:13):
so much better in the last decade that it was
in the early two thousands. I mean, it's comical, seriously,
and I think, yes, the Knicks can push for the
third best team of all time, but you probably gotta
go with Jordan's bulls in the uh in uh I
think ninety six when they want seventy two games, Yeah,

(07:36):
sent two. The Knicks have a statistical argument for it.
I think people would look at them and be like,
who's guarding Michael Jordan? Probably og In Andobi, I mean,
maybe Michael Bridges. I mean, the Knicks just have a
really freaking good team and their postseason run was amazing.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
So I'll quickly pivot to two other NBA stories I saw.
I don't know if this is Bill Simmons trying to,
you know, recapture some magic of Spurs Nicks, but I
guess he came out on his podcast and said that
all signs point to Jannis or sorry, the Celtics made
an offer for Yannis. I mean, nobody's reported that, but

(08:30):
it sounds logical. And then all signs point to Lebron
going to the Warriors. The Warriors quote unquote stealing Lebron
from the Lakers. So I would say, first, no, I
don't think Giannis goes to the Celtics, although I do

(08:50):
think the Celtics are in better shape than the Heat.
Just remember, in these huge, massive moves in the NBA,
it almost never comes down to what everybody was predicting.
Usually everybody's wrong and a team comes out of nowhere
and swoops him in. I don't think the Heat have
the assets. I think multiple teams can bid better. Boston
would be interesting giving up Jaden Brown, Jalen Brown, but okay,

(09:13):
Yannis Tatum and what else you got, because they're not
doing Jalen Brown straight up for Yannas. So what are
we doing here? Like Giannis is making a slightly slightly
better than lateral move. The Heat is straight up like
no way bay Im in Yannis, what are they winning?
And then I see the Heat's backup playing as Trey Young. Well,

(09:34):
good luck with that, guys. I think what gets interesting
with Yannis is when you start hearing stuff like Clippers
giving up the five pick and a poo poo platter,
and then you've got Janis and Kawhi. To me, Janis
and Kawhi is better than Tatum and Yannis mostly because

(09:56):
you get well, it's also better for the Bucks because
you're getting the Fis pick as opposed to whatever Boston has.
I want a top five pick. These picks from Miami,
what are they going to be in the twenties unless
you're talking top ten picks. I don't think they're that
valuable in the honest discussion. I mean, I guess you
could make them unprotected, but still you'd have to have
craziness to happen for those picks that are likely going

(10:17):
to be in the twenties to create all the way
down to like a top five pick. And then the
Lebron stuff. I'm just telling you, guys, Lebron wants to
stay with the Lakers. This is not informed. It's just
look at the picture. Why would he want to leave
to go to the Warriors play with a bunch of
fossils Butler, Curry, Drera? What are they winning? And oh,

(10:41):
by the way, what are the Warriors? What's so attractive
about them? I get to play with Curry and Draymond.
They're my friends. Lebron's about winning. You think he's going
to go to the Warriors for fifteen mili? Is it
he more likely to just stay with the Lakers, convince
Austin Reeves to take less and then add some players.

(11:02):
I don't know, I'm just the Yanna stuff. Hasn't me twisted,
But apparently it's gonna happen before the draft, and the
draft is in less than two weeks. Final take of
the day goes to my guy, Keny Martin. Kenyan Martin.
I've been doing this online for a couple of weeks,
this Becky ham and stuff. Kenyan Martin. He went a
little overboard, but this is a take first and foremost,

(11:24):
why do we pay attention to anything Becky Hamman has
to stay? Let's start there. Who cares what Becky Hammon
has to stay? Let her stick on that side of basketball.
I'm dead ass, like, why would we pay attention to
anything she has to say? Someone chimes in she was
Popovitch's first assistant coach Kenyan Martin. I don't care. Don't
get me started on that. There's plenty of other people

(11:44):
who could have been sitting on that seat. Didn't really
think all that was necessary. Here's the thing. I'm glad
someone in the media is actually calling out Becky ham
and I feel like I'm on an island here, guys.
All I know is when I screw up, Colin screws up,
Steve and A screws anybody screws up, they get called out.
Why is it different for Becky Hammond? She hammered Jalen Brunson.

(12:08):
He proved her wrong within two years big time. He
led the next Row title and was Finals MVP, putting
up forty five in the deciding game. I will remind you,
in the deciding game he had fifteen fourth quarter points.
When SGA was at home in Game seven, he had
four points in the fourth quarter. With the season and
the series on the line, he had four. Jalen Brunson.

(12:29):
Series wasn't on the line, but you could have knocked
out the Spurs. He had ten points in a row,
a ten nothing run by himself and finished the quarter
with fifteen and they knock. They come back again to
beat the Spurs. So basically Jalen Brunson did with SGA
could not. I'm waiting for Becky Hammond to step up. Anyways,

(12:50):
I don't want to be and now I'm just gonna
be a hater. People gonna get angry at me.

Speaker 1 (12:53):
Whatever. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup

Speaker 2 (13:07):
Let's quickly before we get the World Cup. So the
long national nightmare of Brandon Soresby, the quarterback, the gambling
quarterback who was gonna play for Texas Tech this year.
He was ruled in eligible. They kicked him out of football.
He went to a judge. The linear judge said two
games suspension, You're fine. He was going to play, and

(13:33):
then all of a sudden, after like a week of
hullabaloo in college football where lawsuits threatened to like not
play Texas Tech, the whole league hated him. The whole
league hated the we're gonna sanction Texas Tech if they

(13:55):
had to play them. The commissioner spoke up out about
the about the court's ruling, said it was a great
concern among conference members. It's just got a little asinine. Okay. Now,
it's unclear to me if Brendan Sorsby said this or
Texas Tech did. But he ain't gonna play next year,
he's going to the NFL. It seems to me like

(14:17):
there's a chance Sorsby went to Texas Tech and said,
you know what, forget all this crap. I'm just gonna
go to league. Or Texas Tech said, you know what,
we don't want you to have to carry this baggage
around the rest of your life. They come after Texas Tech.
It's like the biggest grossest story. Maybe sit this one out.
You don't have to give us back your nil money

(14:37):
that we've already paid you. And Sworsby's gonna go to
the NFL supplemental Draft. By the way, the NFL supplemental
Draft hasn't happened since ninety to twenty nineteen. That's crazy
again to recaps, and we had Brad Powers on the
podlast week talking about it. Sorsby made about nine thousand bets.

(14:57):
He bet about ninety thousand dollars. You can be a
math major. We're talking a bunch of ten dollar wagers. Okay.
Of those nine thousand, about three hundred were on college football,
according to the lawsuit. Of the three hundred, about forty
were on Indiana when he was red shirted with Indiana. So,

(15:22):
as a quick reminder, we're talking about a guy who
was making ten dollars bets on any and everything he
was betting on. Would the next pitch be a striker
a ball, Like, that's that's a problem, clearly. And then
it was oh, maybe he's betting an under on Indiana's
passing yards and he's betting ten dollars on that under.

(15:45):
He's not moving lines. There's a reason that the casinos
took nine thousand bets and ninety thousand of his dollars
because he was it was dumb money. And then they
were like, oh, let's turn this guy. You know, he's
making six million dollars. We don't want to look bad.
Let's get ahead of this. After taking ninety thousand of
his doubt Like, it's just again, I'm not totally defending him. Obviously,
what he did was wrong. The guy's clearly got a

(16:06):
freaking problem, and so Soorsby said, I'm gonna go to
the NFL. Now, it's interesting because the NFL technically could
come to him and say, you know what, because you
were kicked out of college football, we're gonna make you
serve a suspension. Can't We can't have you getting in
a gambling problem. It's kind of messy. Soresby is done

(16:30):
in college football, and you know the good thing here.
I don't like that he caved to the public pressure,
but at the same time, the Texas Tech statement is hilarious.
So Cody Campbell is their billionaire donor guy. He's chairman
of the Board of Regents and a senior member of
the President's Blue Ribbon Council. Here's what he said in

(16:51):
his letter. This is funny. The bottom line is that
Texas Tech did absolutely nothing but act with complete integrity
throughout this process. We broke no rules actually correct, no
laws correct, and cross no ethical lines. I think some
people would debate that now the'se right. We broke no rules,

(17:11):
no laws. Soresby broke rules years ago at Indiana before
he was playing in Cincinnati, and I like this line
from Texas Tech, which is digging in their heels a
little bit. We are proud to represent a university that
supports as students the way we do, especially in a
growingly professionalized college sports world that often treats these young

(17:35):
people like nothing more than commodities.

Speaker 1 (17:38):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (17:39):
I mean, you know, technically Texas Tech is treating the
players that it gets an nil like commodities. Right, you
can help me try to win a naddie. Here's some money.
I mean, there's nothing wrong with That's that's where college
football is, is that right? I don't know, I have
no problem that. I mean, nobody seems to care. When

(18:02):
coaches are making seven to ten million dollars, who cares
about players making money? You know, these wretched bowl games,
these rich bull executives, all they do is make shit
tons of money. You know, they put on the poolon
weed Eater Bowl and those guys clear seven hundred and
fifty k more, rich old white dudes getting paid. Meanwhile,

(18:23):
the reason they're getting paid is all these kids on
the field and they're not making money, So let them
make money. What's wrong with that? All the old people
have a lot of money, they need more. I mean,
we know greed is bad in this country. Don't get
me started on Elon Musk, the world's first trillionaire. Oh dear,
oh my gosh, yeah, Jason pivot quickly. They're getting angry.
The natives are restless. Anyways, Soresbeillo go to these supplemental

(18:46):
draft It's gonna be interesting who takes a flyer on him. Frankly,
I mean, I don't know that he was going to
be a lock first round pick. Maybe somebody takes a
sixth round flyer on him. Cardinals have nothing I thought
about the Jets, But guys, I don't want him to
fall ass backwards into five wins. I don't I want

(19:09):
Geno Smith to stumble into three and we get the
first pick. That's in an ideal world, that's what happens
to the Jets this year. They do nothing for me.
If they win six games and we get the fourth pick, like,
that's not a win. And so, you know, as interesting
and enticing as sore Asby is, I just I don't

(19:30):
think I want to do that. All right, let me
wrap up with the World Cup, and I think you
guys can tell that I am totally enamored with the
World Cup. I watched practically every game on Monday, four games,
four ties. Spain was the biggest one, and everybody loves
the story. Cabo Verde huge underdogs. Yes, I did bet

(19:55):
Spain minus two and a half, three and a half
whatever it was. They could not score a goal. The
statistics were unbelievably staggering. I saw something like twenty was
it twenty seven shots? Shots on goal was seven to one.
Spain expected goals, which is kind of the number one
stat for soccer. Spain was expected to score two point

(20:19):
one goals based on what happened on the field. Cabo
Verde was point two. Yeah. I mean they basically said,
we're gonna hunker down nine behind the ball, actually ten
behind the ball and the goalie, and we're just gonna
try to keep you out of the goal. Spain had
seven shots on goal. The Cabo Verde goalie became a legend.

(20:40):
He had fifty thousand Instagram followers before the game. After
a masterful performance that puts him on the short list
of one of the more memorable guys in the last
thirty or forty years in the World Cup, his Instagram
following swelled over a million. It's it's insane. I mean,
there have been incredible runs. I still remember one of

(21:02):
the first World Cups that I was like super into
nineteen ninety. Not all the games were on TV, but
Cameroon made an incredible run to the quarterfinals. They had
this old guy thirty eight years old, Roger Mela, and
they were the indomitable trailblazers. They beat Diego Maridona in
the first game one nothing. Argentina was a major force,

(21:24):
and then they got knocked out by a good England
team three to two. But like Roger Mila, I can
still remember him dancing in the corner, Oh my gosh,
who are these guys Cameroon? What the hell? That to
me was like the first Oh my goodness, they were
super fun Ghana, you guys might remember them twenty ten

(21:45):
making it to the quarterfinals. They knocked out the United
States in extra time. That was such a gut punch.
I still remember watching that game. We were in Pennsylvania
living at the time, and we felt so good. We
had friends over for that we're watching it and it
was just devastating an extra time I think the winner
Jean Awesome want gian Gion. I don't know how to

(22:08):
say it, but I think he had the game winner.
And then they lose to Uruguay in the quarters, a tough,
tough one. And then like last year or last World Cup,
there was Morocco make it all the way to the
semifinals and then I don't think Cabo Verde is going
to make a major run. But for two hours they

(22:31):
captivated the soccer world. I mean, Spain's a favorite to
win the whole thing. Now we have seen teams come
out and struggle in their first one. I think Spain's
gonna be fine. Jamal did come on and look pretty
good in twenty minutes or thirty minutes, but yes, Spain's
Spain's got the world cutout. Belgium, Egypt was pretty good,
Saudi Arabia Uruguay excellent game, and then Iran New Zealand

(22:54):
was good. I'm just I'm way into the soccer and
today's games are ridiculous. So France Senegal is going to
be extraordinary. We get him bope, then you get maybe
the best goal scorer in the world right now, Earling
Earl Holling from Norway. If you if you can bet

(23:15):
him over one point five goals, maybe you do it.
They're playing Iraq. They are huge favorites. If you could
bet him over two point five goals. I mean there's
a warld where he gets a hat trick. Guys, again,
Iraq ain't great. Now will they try the strategy? Let's
hunker down and just play deep and and and just
try to try to not let them score. The problem

(23:36):
is once you give up the goal early, you're totally cooked.
And I think that probably happens to a rack. And
then the nightcap is Diego Maradona, just kidding, Leonel Messi
and Argantina against Algeria. So you get two of the
I don't know ten best players in the world right now.
I know people will say Messi's not top ten. J

(23:56):
Come on, you get Messy, you get Bape and hauling
and does probably the best goalscorer on the planet right now.
So an offensive minded day likely coming your way. Wednesday,
Oh my gosh, we have five games Wednesday. Wow, yes,
finally we get England on Wednesday, we get Ronaldo on Wednesday.

(24:18):
Colombia is a bit of a dark horse. Wednesday should
be fun as well. And then starting Thursday, that's when
we get teams we've already seen. And then of course Friday,
USA Australia noon Pacific, three Eastern. Boy, I'm nervous as
hell about that one already. So the quick word on
Polisic is that Polisic was not a full participant in

(24:41):
practice on Monday. He did some work at practice. Again,
if you're playing, if you were the USA and you're
playing the long game, I think it's probably the right
move to sit him. I don't want him to sit,
but you know, a again, we're talking about a guy,

(25:02):
you know, a team that could make a run to
the quarterfinals. Do you rest him in hopes that he's
in better, his calf is better. I don't know how
bad the calf is because we don't really have details.
But without him, you know, like I said yesterday, I'm
on the.

Speaker 1 (25:17):
Under all right.

Speaker 2 (25:19):
We are, I think going to be doing an NBA
Draft guest coming up, and I think we have a
World Cup guest as well. Busy week on straight Fire.
Thanks for listening, folks.
