or Wednesday, July the eighth, Folks, For the first time
in three weeks, we do not have World Cup games today.
It is an off day at the World Cup. I
don't know what I'm gonna do with all the time
on my hands, Folks. It is the tournament's been incredible.

We are down to the final eight. The quarterfinals begin
tomorrow France versus Morocco one o'clock Pacific. Then on Saturday
it's Spain Belgium at noon. I'm sorry, Friday, Spain Belgium
at noon. Then Saturday England Norway and then Sunday Argentina Switzerland.
(00:56):
Now Argentina survive. What was I mean in Mexico versus
England was a phenomenal match. I thought the full gate
best game of the tournament. Argentina Egypt on Tuesday was
crazy and we'll get to it shortly. Switzerland beat Colombia
in penalty kicks, which poor Columbia. I mean, they had

a great tournament and they just flamed out. Could not score,
had some point playing chances in extra time. But I
just got to talk about Argentina for a moment. So
they win the World Cup in twenty twenty two. Messi
crown is the greatest ever. They come into this as
one of the favorites. France is up there, Spain's up there,
but Messi's getting old, right, and nobody expected Leonel Messi
(01:41):
at thirty nine to dominate, right, I mean he's thirty nine,
he's Messi. Yeah he's crushing the ML's but come on,
this is the World Cup. Heavy legs, lots of travel,
this is the World Cup. Is an arduous task. And
Argentina really struggled against Cape Bear day Friday, and then
they come into this and they're favored heavily, and it's like,

come on, Egypt just played a long match and you
know they needed pks to get by freaking is it Australia,
New Zealand whatever, It doesn't really matter. They struggled, and
so Argentina was heavy favorites against Egypt and they fall
behind one nothing in the first half and then in
a shocker, they go down to nothing. Now at that
point it gets a little wacky. Refs went to Va.
(02:25):
The ref went to var and was like, oh yeah,
one hundred yards ago at the other end of the field.
There was a foul. We got to take that goal
off the board and it felt like highway robbery and
everybody was outraged. Oh this is this is garbage, you guys.
Refs are in the tank for Argentina. But then a
funny thing happened. Egypt scored again. They go up to
zero in the sixty seventh minute, just a counter and

the Argentina defense was Swiss cheese. At this point, it's
nothing Egypt. With thirty minutes left in the match, folks,
it was over now. You know the saying the most
dangerous lead in soccer is to nothing. Why because you
let your guard down a little, you think it's over.
They get one and then they have momentum and they
come and you're rallying, and they get another one. That's

the actual quote in soccer. Well, you know, we get
this seventy five minute mark, nothing for Argentina. It's like,
oh my gosh, this is devastating. Boy. You can't lose
the US and Argentina in a twenty four hour span.
You know, I mean no disrespect to Egypt, but come on, sorry, guys, people,
just most sala is a great story, but there isn't
the passion that there is for Messi, the greatest soccer

player ever. And then in the seventy ninth minute, Messi
starts to take over, makes an amazing pass and Romero
scores ahead and it's two one. It's like, okay, game on,
all right, all right, here we go. Four minutes later,
chaos in the box. The ball pops to Messi and
he drills a rocket that goes off the goalie's hand

into the top shelf and at that point, oh my gosh,
one of the loudest roarers you know when you're watching
TV that you ever will expect. It was massive. It
came through the screen. Argentina ties it up Messi of course,
and now there's still seven minutes left. You're like, oh
my gosh, is Argentina going to win this? And of
(04:13):
course you go to stoppage time and you know Egypt's
gassed and they don't really get back. There's a cross
an Enzo Fernandez Barri's aheader, Argentina goes up three to two,
and at that point it was like, you've gotta be
kidding me. Now we were doing the herd while this
is happening, but it was like a commercial break or something.

So I'm in the what they have the avocado room
where they have all the TV set up with all
the different views, and I'll just say there were some
pretty famous soccer players in there, and people are like
watching this build up the cross. I'm like, oh my gosh,
Enzo and the crowd the room erupted, people, how is that?
Oh my gosh, craziest cut back ever? And the I

felt like the building shook because you know, obviously Fox
would love it if Messi could reach the final, and
it was just pandemonium. I don't there's really nothing like
Leonard Messi in sports. I heard a funny joke from
someone at Fox. It goes like this, Christiano Ronaldo met
the media and said, God sent me to Earth to

show people how to play football. Oh wow. So the
reporters run to Messi and say, Messi, did you hear
Christiano said God sent him here to teach us football.
What do you think? And Messi goes, I don't remember
sending anyone. Yes, you get it. Messi is God, that's
what they're saying. I mean, he is a legend, a
goal in a syst so When the final whistle blows,

Messi drops to his knee starts crying. Listen. We saw
this with Jude Bellingham of England in Mexico. He dropped
to his he started crying. Guys. I don't think we
can grasp the World Cup like the super Bowl is
big in America. The globe largely doesn't care about the
super Bowl. The NBA finals are huge smattering of Europe
and Asia cares about the NBA five else the World Cup.

I mean, I'm pretty sure Messi has more Instagram followers
than the top two hundred NFL players combined. Maybe more
like this is a global sport only every four years.
And the emotion from Messi, I was just like, I'm sorry, guys.
I was cheering, I was rooting. I don't want him
to lose this early. Now, if you're talking he loses

to Spain or France, that's a different story. I don't
want to go down to Egypt. And I know, Jason,
what about come on Cinderella. I get it. I love
Cinderella too, guys, but we're not gonna get much more messy.
He ain't playing it at forty three years forty four
years old or whatever. Thty forty three in Spain and
for the World Cup in twenty thirty. He's just not

Rinaldo said, he's hanging him up just for other guys
will step up, Earling Holland, Jude Bellingham. There's a million
good soccer players, but Messi is on a planet of
his own, folks. He's just extraordinary and this this World
Cup is I can't think of a better World Cup.
Just phenomenal. So the matches are set, we'll do we'll

to find former Washington at the time Redskins quarterback Joe Thaisman.

up in Virginia. Joe, how's the weather there? How's a
summer treating in VA?

Today? It's good?

Huh, it's like every place else in the country. Just
wait a day and then you can ask me the
same question and it could be a different answer. No,
it's a beautiful day today. It's sunny, it's bright, temperatures
probably mid to high seventies. I mean really, it's just
an absolutely gorgeous day. And I've been doing all this
promotion staring out the window for our American Century Golf
(08:46):
Championship coming up. So it's it's a day. Why why
could it be raining a little bit, you know, make
it a little easier inside.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
So that is that's going to be in July tenth
through twelfth on Peacock and NBC. Yeah, obviously you're a
big golfer and retirement, right, you're going to cross this.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
Yeah, this is our third I've been. I'm not really retired.
I still do a lot of motivational speaking and love
the living that of it. So but I do try
and play as much golf as humanly possible. This is
the thirty seventh tournament, and as you mentioned, it's on
NBC and Peacock between the twelfth and the tenth and
the twelfth, and I've played in thirty six of them.
(09:23):
This will be my thirty sixth tournament. So it's funny
to see how the scores have changed and my positioning
has changed over time. But American Centuries is such a
fabulous company. I mean when you take into consideration what
they do. And I asked a buddy of mine one day,
you know, and we're talking about success, and he said,
true success comes when you reach a certain point and

you give things back. And American Century is one of
those companies that gives away. Actually donates forty percent of
its dividends to the Stour Institute for Cancer Research and
Research diseases. I mean, it's incredible company. They've been a
sponsor for a number of years, decades for us. We've

was new and it'll be about eighty players. We expect

fifty thousand, so it's gone up constantly, and I think
first place is one hundred and fifty grand.

Wow, you got any shot of get in first?
Speaker 3 (11:06):
Or no? No, I don't. I've tried to always finish.
As I've gotten older, I've tried to finish towards the
middle a little bit more. And last year I didn't
do very well. Last year I had a bad Sunday.
So hopefully this year I'll have three decent days and
you know, walk away a little bit more respectable.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Yeah. So when I was growing up Joe in Northern Virginia,
obviously the Redskins, Joe thought you guys were everything. And
I remember I would like walk to school and the
crossing guards would hand out Washington Redskins cards with Joe
Thighs and Joja Kobe, the Hogs, all that stuff. You
guys were everything in that DC area. I mean to
think about this current team with Jingden at quarterback and
(11:44):
Dan Quinn maybe on the hot seat. So two years
ago they went to the NFC Championship. Last year, Jaden
gets hurt. I don't know what's in store for Washington.
Do you think they can recapture that magic that they
did two years ago and maybe get back to a
Super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
I think they can, but they can't recapture it in
the fashion that they did two years ago. The last
five games roughly of the season, we're all nail biers
right after the last minute, overtime and everything else. You
can't be that kind of a football teams. It was
the exact Chicago Bears this past year. Uh huh, last
four or five games, late wins and stuff like that.
(12:19):
I think Jayden's coming back healthy. I think he's you know,
he's a terrific young quarterback. So we're very stable in
that area. We've added a heck of a linebacker in styles.
Our wide receivers are solid. Our offensive lit When people
don't talk about your offensive line, that's a good thing.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
That's a good thing.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
Yeah. Yeah, people aren't saying, well, this guy's giving up sacks,
that guy's giving up sacks.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
No.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
I think the division we're in is probably one of
the best divisions in football. Giants got that, Eagles have
been pretty darn good. Cowboys will probably be better. Of course,
I believe we will as well. So you know, I'm
really excited. But you're right back in the back in
the eighties, it was you know, when you go to
a chap. You go to two championships and you're winning divisions,
and you know you're winning football games. Everybody's excited. Two
(13:05):
years ago, you could feel the energy again coming back
into the city. I think it's going to be here again.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
Yeah, some of that had to do with getting rid
of the owner, but we won't go there. You mentioned
the wide receiver room. I don't know. I would say
that's the biggest question. Marketing offense. I like Scary Terry,
but you know it's a single point of failure. He
goes down for any number of games. I mean, listen,
everybody likes Luke McCaffrey, Antonio Williams, Treylon Burks, but that's
a lot of unproven talent or a young quarterback. Don't
(13:33):
you think they need someone out there?
Speaker 3 (13:35):
Yeah? I think they're probably going to try and get
a veteran of some sorts. But you know, after we've
got training camp coming up. And that's another thing too.
It's very interesting. Back when I started in this league,
we had six preseason games. I was in training camp
one with eight weeks. Oh yeah, we had in fourteen
regular season games. Then they went to four preseason games.
Now we're down to three. I don't know how coaches
(13:57):
can evaluate players in shorts and pads and hats. I mean,
you don't really see how a guy hits. You don't
see how he reacts to being hit being hit. I
think the job's a little tougher for coaches to be
able to fill their rosters out because it's really a
question of what am I looking at versus what do
I sense and feel that a guy's capable of doing.
(14:20):
You sort of hope a little bit in that regard
with the way the rules have changed and the safety
of the players, And I understand protecting players. I think
it's smart, but I don't know how coaches can evaluate
three players. Your vets, your starters don't play, they don't
So I look at the first two three regular season
games of the season as modified preseason games. What's the
(14:43):
conditioning like. You see guys put the ball on the ground,
You see guys fumble the ball because they're not used
to getting hit. You see penalties, guys grabbing one another,
and so as they settle in, I think it gets
a little easier. But right now, in the beginning, everybody's
sort of wondering what do I have?
Speaker 2 (14:59):
I mean, you think back to last year. I remember
betting on the Niners in the opener against Seattle, and
you know, Darnald drives down the field at the end,
Seattle look terrible all game, and then Darnald vomits the
football up inside his own fifteen yard line with the
game on the line, and nobody walked away from that thinking, hey,
that's Seattle. Team's dangerous. They go they're gonna go win
the Super Bowl. Well, you know, that's an interesting point.
(15:20):
The early season maybe doesn't mean as much as it
used to.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
It does. It's not a great indicator at all. But
I think if you look at the last two championships
in particular, defense has been a big part of it
for Seattle and for Philadelphia the year before. You know,
in fifty nine and sixty the Super Bowls, the defense
has really stepped up. Offenses did a good job of
supporting their defenses, but the defenses were the big difference
(15:43):
in a football game. And I'll take you back to
Super Bowl seventeen, the one that we won against Miami.
David Woodley was ozer for seventeen in the second half.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
Really yeah, and then seven I didn't know that. I
think that was before my time.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
But well, holy it was. But the only see super
Bowl eight of that Super Bowl eighteen we played in
that football team, and we only lost two games by
two points that year. Our giveaway takeaway ratio was plus
forty three. When you think about taking the ball away
from an opponent forty three more times than giving it up.
(16:20):
And nobody's even come close, nor I can predict this,
nor will they ever come close to being able to
have that kind of a ratio.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
Wait, wait, the fourteen and two team? Is that the
Super Bowl again? The Marcus Allen super Bowl?
Speaker 3 (16:33):
Yep, that's that was one against the Raires. Yeah, we'd
only lost that year. One of them was thirty let
me say, thirty eight to thirty seven to the Green
Bay Packers. And then what was I.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
Think forty eight forty seven? Yeah, what a memory, Oh
my goshh yeah.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
And then we had then we had one I think
in the high thirties against the Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
But you guys were utterly dominant.
Speaker 1 (16:55):
Holy hell, we really were.
Speaker 3 (16:56):
I mean it was. I've never sat in a meeting
room when coach put in, when Coach Gibbs put in
the plays, I never ever doubted that we would win.
The only thing I was curious about was how many
points I thought we might score. That's how That's the
kind of a football team we had. That's the way
those guys were building. Our defense was something special. Like
(17:16):
I said, defenses. You know, defense will carry football teams
a long way. You have to have a supporting cast, obviously,
and in this day and age, you need a quarterback bad.
You really needed to that team.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
Yeah, you guys had Charlie Brown and Art Monk, but
if the very faint memories I have of that was
John Riggins just being an absolute horse.
Speaker 3 (17:36):
Yeah, John didn't oddly enough. You know, it's interesting about
that year. John had twenty four touchdown passes, a touchdown
touchdowns rushing. Yeah, he didn't make the Pro Bowl because
at that time you voted for halfbacks and full backs.
We only ran a one back offense, and so John
was under the moniker of an r back remaining back

and he didn't. He didn't get the votes.

I want to ask about that because you know, the
league's is cyclical through many phases, and running backs like
four years ago were done. Oh you can't pay a
running back, They're useless. It's not a running back league.
Running backs don't matter. And then Saquon Barkley goes to
the Eagles rushes for two thousand yards and they win
the Super Bowl. I'm just curious. You guys had an
(18:35):
engine back there in Briggins. Where are you on running
backs in the current era?
Speaker 3 (18:40):
I think you have to have them. Look at Derek
Henry Bolevar is going to be a very interesting team
this year. New coach. Derek's not getting any younger. Lamar's
not getting any younger. Lamar's a big part of that offense.
When it comes to running the football. I think you
have to have a running back and you have to
be able to utilize his abilities. We're seeing more and
more quarterbacks operating under center, which means that the play
(19:03):
action game is now a bigger part of the offense.
And if you're going to run play action and you
don't run the ball, it doesn't do you any good.
So you'll you know, it can't be just one guy.
I don't think you can hang your hat on one back.
Those days are gone. You need a different type of back.
You need somebody to get out of the backfield. If
you've got one like Saquan who can do it, all,
(19:25):
good for you. But I really think that there is
an importance to that position that is now finally coming
to forefront again.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
Yeah, and you watch Washington go out and get Rashad
White from Tampa. So they've got Crosskey, Mirrort and White.
You're right, the duel back is the way to go.
Let me ask about a couple other teams in division. Obviously,
Washington and the Giants had an unbelievable rivalry back in
the eighties. I remember watching all those games Cowboys as well. Yeah,
I just wonder, where are you on this Harball move
(19:55):
for you know, I know everybody's excited. Oh, the Giants
got John Harball. He won a Super Bowl. I mean, Joe,
if we're gonna pick nits here, he got fired. He
blew more double digit leads than any other coach in
the league, I believe in the last three or four years.
You know, he had a two time MVP and could
never break through in the AFC. Where are you on Hardball? Like,
if you're ranking the coaches in the division. Is he one.
Speaker 3 (20:18):
I think he's a heck of a football coach. But
you know, everybody says, it's just like quarterbacks have won
super Bowls. Tom's won seven, Troy's won you know three.
It's the team that was a football team that John didn't.
John wasn't on the field, John wasn't trying to make tackles.
John wasn't trying to run the football. I think I
think they were basically really sort of a one trick pony,
(20:41):
and then people started to wise up. I think it's
a heck of a move. And by the way, John,
I think Steve Bashatti he wanted I think John to stay.
John made the choice to leave. People say he got fired.
I don't believe that really. I believe that it was
like everything else in coaching. I believe it might have
been time for him to move on and accept a
(21:01):
different challenge. We saw with Mike Tomlin. We got ten
new coaches this year. Ten now, not everybody. You know,
some people decided to go someplace else, John being one
of them, and I think he chose a team. There's
no way a coach is going to leave a football
team unless you can go and have a quarterback just
not going to happen. Yeah, and he's got a he's
got a pretty darn good young one in Jackson. Dark
(21:24):
needs to be rained in a little bit before he
kills himself, but he's got a pretty good one there.
And so, you know, to me, I think, I think
it's a solid division. Like I think it's the best
division in football, and it will be probably the most competitive.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
Interesting so over say the Lions, Vikings, Bears, and Packers. Yeah, yeah,
or you know, I mean She's Chargers, Broncos, Raiders, Raiders.
Speaker 3 (21:50):
Yeah, I think so. I think this division is pretty
even cross. You know, it would be an interesting thing
to see him go one in one each in the division.
They they all got. I think we got better defensively
in Washington and Jayden's coming back. Philadelphia's been really good.
They sort of had a somewhat of an off year
last year with all the distractions and AJ's now someplace else. Yeah, Dallas,
(22:16):
I think got better defensively. They were not good at
all last year. And of course I thought as far
as the talent level in New York on the defensive
side of the ball, they're really good. And like I said,
they're getting some of their people back. They were injured
a lot, So you know, I think that is You
could argue and say other divisions are almost as competitive,
(22:38):
but they always have one team in there that you're
not certain of. And I think in this one, you
can look at every one of them say they got better.
Speaker 2 (22:46):
Interesting your take on the Rams training for Miles Garrett.
Obviously you made a good point earlier. It's a team sport.
Garrett is an upgrade over Jared Verse. But everybody's crowning
the Rams this offseason. Are you buying it?
Speaker 3 (22:59):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (23:00):
I am.
Speaker 3 (23:01):
They're all in. They're all in. They've got the weapons everywhere.
Like I said, defense wins a championship, so you know,
I mean you're you're not going to outscore them, and
they're going to put points on the board. That's just
the way the offen That's the way Shawn's designed this
offense to put points on the board. I think Miles
going there was an indication we don't care about young guys.
(23:21):
We're not going to draft, We're not going to do
you know, we're not interested in developing guys. If we
get one, great, but if we have a chance to
get somebody special in this particular year, probably Matthews. Last year,
I think Shawn went out and he put his football
team together and he said, this is We're going to
make a run at the Roses. We're gonna we're gonna
do everything we can to be able to be in
(23:43):
the Super Bowl and win the Super Bowl because it's
actually going to be in their home stadium. Remember we're in.
Speaker 2 (23:49):
So FI this year, right so far?
Speaker 3 (23:50):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, sixty one. So yeah, I think that
I think they've loaded and said, okay, all in all,
the chips are on the table, we're going after it.
Hopefully everybody stays healthy, and if they do, I think
they're the odds on favorite to win.
Speaker 2 (24:04):
So no, you don't think Seattle could repeat at all?
Speaker 3 (24:07):
Well, anybody could repeat, saddle Seattle certainly could repeat. It's
a heck of a football team. But you know, like
I say, injuries play such a big part of it
as you go forward. But right now, I like the Rams,
I really do, and we'll we'll have a great indicator
because they're in the same division.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
So so you like the Rams in the NFC, who
you got in the AFC.
Speaker 3 (24:28):
Oh, that's a little more wide open I still, I still,
I don't see Kansas City falling too far away? You know,
was New England's a one time wonder with Drake adding
AJ what's it going to do that office? And I
saw somebody say that, you know, adding a J. Brown
would be like when like when Randy Moss went to
(24:49):
the New England Patriots. No, no, Randy Moss was an
absolute exception. Tom Brady threw fifty touchdown passes uh in
one of the years that Randy was there, and he
caught three of them. I just don't see the game
being that way anymore. And I know, you know, you
are they going to be able to appease agent? Are
they gonna be able to get him the ball enough
to keep him to a point where well, you know,
(25:11):
he's sort of happy? And I'm sorry, I maybe I
am a little old fashioned, but when you're on a
football team and you're in a football game and you
sit down on a bench and you start reading a book,
I just think there's something wrong with the moon and
the stars. I just I just don't get it. And
(25:32):
I just don't know how people tolerate that. I really don't.
You're there to support your team, you know, if you're
on offense, then a defense is on the field ruin
them on. It's part of the team. And if the
offense is on the field, the defense should be there.
I just that, to me is one of the most
baffling things I've ever seen in football, in this modern
(25:55):
era of football. Now. I know, back in the old days,
guys would smoke a cigarette on the sideline, maybe go
grab a hot dog. I mean, those those were the
old days. I know that like the old old days,
but this was this was something new that just I
scratched my head over and just wonder, how do you
tolerate it as a coach? How do you say it's okay?
(26:17):
What you know? I mean, it's supposed to be a
team game. And when you have individuals that decide to
do what they want to do and don't really, you know,
operate within the realm of what I believe as a team,
it makes me scratch my head quite a bit.
Speaker 2 (26:32):
Ye, So, Joe, we could wrap up with this. So
this kid, Brendan Soresby at Texas Tech, it tried to
go to the supplemental draft because there's just a mutiny
going on in college football, which is a mess. Bottom
line is he was a college kid at Indiana. He
was red shirting on the team or not playing, and
he was betting on sports, you know, like ten dollars,
(26:53):
bets on wrestling and is the next pitch going to
be a baller strike? He bets on some of his
own team, he bets on college football, and now he's
getting busted and paying the price. But the NFL recently
canceled a supplemental draft, which was his only avenue to
the league this year. I don't know, I haven't seen
any of your takes on this Soersby stuff, but man,
(27:14):
people are going crazy. They want this kid's head on
a pike. I'm kind of sort of shocked. Again. I
know he made nine thousand bets, Joe, but it was
about ninety thousand dollars.
Speaker 3 (27:24):
Right.
Speaker 2 (27:24):
He wasn't cleaning, he wasn't moving lines in Vegas.
Speaker 3 (27:27):
It isn't a dollar amount. It isn't a dollar amount.
Is when you you know, I know that gambling is
a big part of what the NFL is all about,
what athletics is about. We see it on college people
bet on college sports, people bet on professional sports. But
when you're in the game, it's really supposed to be taboo.
You're not supposed to do it. Basketball got an issue
(27:48):
where they've got some things going on, and this is
this was a college kid that was Betty game. He
was he was on the he was a player, and
he well, he wasn't suiting up.
Speaker 2 (27:59):
He wasn't suiting up, but he was involved in it.
Speaker 3 (28:01):
And they, you know, the evidently filed a lawsuit and
the judge in Lubbock said, okay, you're you know, you
had a problem. And I just think the NFL basically said,
we don't want to deal with this situation right now.
We don't want to see we don't want this sort
of drag through the mud. And that's why I think

they canceled the supplemental. Do you agree with it, the
canceling of the supplemental? Hey, yeah, it's the league's bigger
than I am. It's not a question of whether I
agree or disagree. It's something I think that they saw
that didn't benefit the National Football League and decided they
wanted to go in that direction. What this young man's
(28:43):
future is going to be, I think is yet to
be determined. All right.

Now Argentina survive. What was I mean in Mexico versus
England was a phenomenal match. I thought the full gate
best game of the tournament. Argentina Egypt on Tuesday was
crazy and we'll get to it shortly. Switzerland beat Colombia
in penalty kicks, which poor Columbia. I mean, they had

a great tournament and they just flamed out. Could not score,
had some point playing chances in extra time. But I
just got to talk about Argentina for a moment. So
they win the World Cup in twenty twenty two. Messi
crown is the greatest ever. They come into this as
one of the favorites. France is up there, Spain's up there,
but Messi's getting old, right, and nobody expected Leonel Messi

at thirty nine to dominate, right, I mean he's thirty nine,
he's Messi. Yeah he's crushing the ML's but come on,
this is the World Cup. Heavy legs, lots of travel,
this is the World Cup. Is an arduous task. And
Argentina really struggled against Cape Bear day Friday, and then
they come into this and they're favored heavily, and it's like,

come on, Egypt just played a long match and you
know they needed pks to get by freaking is it Australia,
New Zealand whatever, It doesn't really matter. They struggled, and
so Argentina was heavy favorites against Egypt and they fall
behind one nothing in the first half and then in
a shocker, they go down to nothing. Now at that
point it gets a little wacky. Refs went to Va.
(02:25):
The ref went to var and was like, oh yeah,
one hundred yards ago at the other end of the field.
There was a foul. We got to take that goal
off the board and it felt like highway robbery and
everybody was outraged. Oh this is this is garbage, you guys.
Refs are in the tank for Argentina. But then a
funny thing happened. Egypt scored again. They go up to
zero in the sixty seventh minute, just a counter and

the Argentina defense was Swiss cheese. At this point, it's
nothing Egypt. With thirty minutes left in the match, folks,
it was over now. You know the saying the most
dangerous lead in soccer is to nothing. Why because you
let your guard down a little, you think it's over.
They get one and then they have momentum and they
come and you're rallying, and they get another one. That's

the actual quote in soccer. Well, you know, we get
this seventy five minute mark, nothing for Argentina. It's like,
oh my gosh, this is devastating. Boy. You can't lose
the US and Argentina in a twenty four hour span.
You know, I mean no disrespect to Egypt, but come on, sorry, guys, people,
just most sala is a great story, but there isn't
the passion that there is for Messi, the greatest soccer
(03:32):
player ever. And then in the seventy ninth minute, Messi
starts to take over, makes an amazing pass and Romero
scores ahead and it's two one. It's like, okay, game on,
all right, all right, here we go. Four minutes later,
chaos in the box. The ball pops to Messi and
he drills a rocket that goes off the goalie's hand

into the top shelf and at that point, oh my gosh,
one of the loudest roarers you know when you're watching
TV that you ever will expect. It was massive. It
came through the screen. Argentina ties it up Messi of course,
and now there's still seven minutes left. You're like, oh
my gosh, is Argentina going to win this? And of

course you go to stoppage time and you know Egypt's
gassed and they don't really get back. There's a cross
an Enzo Fernandez Barri's aheader, Argentina goes up three to two,
and at that point it was like, you've gotta be
kidding me. Now we were doing the herd while this
is happening, but it was like a commercial break or something.

So I'm in the what they have the avocado room
where they have all the TV set up with all
the different views, and I'll just say there were some
pretty famous soccer players in there, and people are like
watching this build up the cross. I'm like, oh my gosh,
Enzo and the crowd the room erupted, people, how is that?
Oh my gosh, craziest cut back ever? And the I

felt like the building shook because you know, obviously Fox
would love it if Messi could reach the final, and
it was just pandemonium. I don't there's really nothing like
Leonard Messi in sports. I heard a funny joke from
someone at Fox. It goes like this, Christiano Ronaldo met
the media and said, God sent me to Earth to

show people how to play football. Oh wow. So the
reporters run to Messi and say, Messi, did you hear
Christiano said God sent him here to teach us football.
What do you think? And Messi goes, I don't remember
sending anyone. Yes, you get it. Messi is God, that's
what they're saying. I mean, he is a legend, a
goal in a syst so When the final whistle blows,

Messi drops to his knee starts crying. Listen. We saw
this with Jude Bellingham of England in Mexico. He dropped
to his he started crying. Guys. I don't think we
can grasp the World Cup like the super Bowl is
big in America. The globe largely doesn't care about the
super Bowl. The NBA finals are huge smattering of Europe
and Asia cares about the NBA five else the World Cup.

I mean, I'm pretty sure Messi has more Instagram followers
than the top two hundred NFL players combined. Maybe more
like this is a global sport only every four years.
And the emotion from Messi, I was just like, I'm sorry, guys.
I was cheering, I was rooting. I don't want him
to lose this early. Now, if you're talking he loses

to Spain or France, that's a different story. I don't
want to go down to Egypt. And I know, Jason,
what about come on Cinderella. I get it. I love
Cinderella too, guys, but we're not gonna get much more messy.
He ain't playing it at forty three years forty four

for the World Cup in twenty thirty. He's just not

Rinaldo said, he's hanging him up just for other guys

good soccer players, but Messi is on a planet of

promotion staring out the window for our American Century Golf

Championship coming up. So it's it's a day. Why why
could it be raining a little bit, you know, make

So that is that's going to be in July tenth

big golfer and retirement, right, you're going to cross this.

Yeah, this is our third I've been. I'm not really retired.
I still do a lot of motivational speaking and love
the living that of it. So but I do try
and play as much golf as humanly possible. This is
the thirty seventh tournament, and as you mentioned, it's on
NBC and Peacock between the twelfth and the tenth and
the twelfth, and I've played in thirty six of them.

This will be my thirty sixth tournament. So it's funny
to see how the scores have changed and my positioning
has changed over time. But American Centuries is such a
fabulous company. I mean when you take into consideration what
they do. And I asked a buddy of mine one day,
you know, and we're talking about success, and he said,
true success comes when you reach a certain point and

As I've gotten older, I've tried to finish towards the

do very well. Last year I had a bad Sunday.
So hopefully this year I'll have three decent days and
you know, walk away a little bit more respectable.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Yeah. So when I was growing up Joe in Northern Virginia,
obviously the Redskins, Joe thought you guys were everything. And
I remember I would like walk to school and the
crossing guards would hand out Washington Redskins cards with Joe
Thighs and Joja Kobe, the Hogs, all that stuff. You
guys were everything in that DC area. I mean to
think about this current team with Jingden at quarterback and
(11:44):
Dan Quinn maybe on the hot seat. So two years
ago they went to the NFC Championship. Last year, Jaden
gets hurt. I don't know what's in store for Washington.
Do you think they can recapture that magic that they
did two years ago and maybe get back to a
Super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
I think they can, but they can't recapture it in
the fashion that they did two years ago. The last
five games roughly of the season, we're all nail biers
right after the last minute, overtime and everything else. You
can't be that kind of a football teams. It was
the exact Chicago Bears this past year. Uh huh, last
four or five games, late wins and stuff like that.
(12:19):
I think Jayden's coming back healthy. I think he's you know,
he's a terrific young quarterback. So we're very stable in
that area. We've added a heck of a linebacker in styles.
Our wide receivers are solid. Our offensive lit When people
don't talk about your offensive line, that's a good thing.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
That's a good thing.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
Yeah. Yeah, people aren't saying, well, this guy's giving up sacks,
that guy's giving up sacks.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
No.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
I think the division we're in is probably one of
the best divisions in football. Giants got that, Eagles have
been pretty darn good. Cowboys will probably be better. Of course,
I believe we will as well. So you know, I'm
really excited. But you're right back in the back in
the eighties, it was you know, when you go to
a chap. You go to two championships and you're winning divisions,
and you know you're winning football games. Everybody's excited. Two
(13:05):
years ago, you could feel the energy again coming back
into the city. I think it's going to be here again.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
Yeah, some of that had to do with getting rid
of the owner, but we won't go there. You mentioned
the wide receiver room. I don't know. I would say
that's the biggest question. Marketing offense. I like Scary Terry,
but you know it's a single point of failure. He
goes down for any number of games. I mean, listen,
everybody likes Luke McCaffrey, Antonio Williams, Treylon Burks, but that's
a lot of unproven talent or a young quarterback. Don't
(13:33):
you think they need someone out there?
Speaker 3 (13:35):
Yeah? I think they're probably going to try and get
a veteran of some sorts. But you know, after we've
got training camp coming up. And that's another thing too.
It's very interesting. Back when I started in this league,
we had six preseason games. I was in training camp
one with eight weeks. Oh yeah, we had in fourteen
regular season games. Then they went to four preseason games.
Now we're down to three. I don't know how coaches
(13:57):
can evaluate players in shorts and pads and hats. I mean,
you don't really see how a guy hits. You don't
see how he reacts to being hit being hit. I
think the job's a little tougher for coaches to be
able to fill their rosters out because it's really a
question of what am I looking at versus what do
I sense and feel that a guy's capable of doing.
(14:20):
You sort of hope a little bit in that regard
with the way the rules have changed and the safety
of the players, And I understand protecting players. I think
it's smart, but I don't know how coaches can evaluate
three players. Your vets, your starters don't play, they don't
So I look at the first two three regular season
games of the season as modified preseason games. What's the
(14:43):
conditioning like. You see guys put the ball on the ground,
You see guys fumble the ball because they're not used
to getting hit. You see penalties, guys grabbing one another,
and so as they settle in, I think it gets
a little easier. But right now, in the beginning, everybody's
sort of wondering what do I have?
Speaker 2 (14:59):
I mean, you think back to last year. I remember
betting on the Niners in the opener against Seattle, and
you know, Darnald drives down the field at the end,
Seattle look terrible all game, and then Darnald vomits the
football up inside his own fifteen yard line with the
game on the line, and nobody walked away from that thinking, hey,
that's Seattle. Team's dangerous. They go they're gonna go win
the Super Bowl. Well, you know, that's an interesting point.
(15:20):
The early season maybe doesn't mean as much as it
used to.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
It does. It's not a great indicator at all. But
I think if you look at the last two championships
in particular, defense has been a big part of it
for Seattle and for Philadelphia the year before. You know,
in fifty nine and sixty the Super Bowls, the defense
has really stepped up. Offenses did a good job of
supporting their defenses, but the defenses were the big difference
(15:43):
in a football game. And I'll take you back to
Super Bowl seventeen, the one that we won against Miami.
David Woodley was ozer for seventeen in the second half.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
Really yeah, and then seven I didn't know that. I
think that was before my time.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
But well, holy it was. But the only see super
Bowl eight of that Super Bowl eighteen we played in
that football team, and we only lost two games by
two points that year. Our giveaway takeaway ratio was plus
forty three. When you think about taking the ball away
from an opponent forty three more times than giving it up.
(16:20):
And nobody's even come close, nor I can predict this,
nor will they ever come close to being able to
have that kind of a ratio.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
Wait, wait, the fourteen and two team? Is that the
Super Bowl again? The Marcus Allen super Bowl?
Speaker 3 (16:33):
Yep, that's that was one against the Raires. Yeah, we'd
only lost that year. One of them was thirty let
me say, thirty eight to thirty seven to the Green
Bay Packers. And then what was I.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
Think forty eight forty seven? Yeah, what a memory, Oh
my goshh yeah.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
And then we had then we had one I think
in the high thirties against the Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
But you guys were utterly dominant.
Speaker 1 (16:55):
Holy hell, we really were.
Speaker 3 (16:56):
I mean it was. I've never sat in a meeting
room when coach put in, when Coach Gibbs put in
the plays, I never ever doubted that we would win.
The only thing I was curious about was how many
points I thought we might score. That's how That's the
kind of a football team we had. That's the way
those guys were building. Our defense was something special. Like
(17:16):
I said, defenses. You know, defense will carry football teams
a long way. You have to have a supporting cast, obviously,
and in this day and age, you need a quarterback bad.
You really needed to that team.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
Yeah, you guys had Charlie Brown and Art Monk, but
if the very faint memories I have of that was
John Riggins just being an absolute horse.
Speaker 3 (17:36):
Yeah, John didn't oddly enough. You know, it's interesting about
that year. John had twenty four touchdown passes, a touchdown
touchdowns rushing. Yeah, he didn't make the Pro Bowl because
at that time you voted for halfbacks and full backs.
We only ran a one back offense, and so John
was under the moniker of an r back remaining back
(17:58):
and he didn't. He didn't get the votes.

I want to ask about that because you know, the
league's is cyclical through many phases, and running backs like
four years ago were done. Oh you can't pay a
running back, They're useless. It's not a running back league.
Running backs don't matter. And then Saquon Barkley goes to
the Eagles rushes for two thousand yards and they win
the Super Bowl. I'm just curious. You guys had an
(18:35):
engine back there in Briggins. Where are you on running
backs in the current era?
Speaker 3 (18:40):
I think you have to have them. Look at Derek
Henry Bolevar is going to be a very interesting team
this year. New coach. Derek's not getting any younger. Lamar's
not getting any younger. Lamar's a big part of that offense.
When it comes to running the football. I think you
have to have a running back and you have to
be able to utilize his abilities. We're seeing more and
more quarterbacks operating under center, which means that the play
(19:03):
action game is now a bigger part of the offense.
And if you're going to run play action and you
don't run the ball, it doesn't do you any good.
So you'll you know, it can't be just one guy.
I don't think you can hang your hat on one back.
Those days are gone. You need a different type of back.
You need somebody to get out of the backfield. If
you've got one like Saquan who can do it, all,
(19:25):
good for you. But I really think that there is
an importance to that position that is now finally coming
to forefront again.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
Yeah, and you watch Washington go out and get Rashad
White from Tampa. So they've got Crosskey, Mirrort and White.
You're right, the duel back is the way to go.
Let me ask about a couple other teams in division. Obviously,
Washington and the Giants had an unbelievable rivalry back in
the eighties. I remember watching all those games Cowboys as well. Yeah,
I just wonder, where are you on this Harball move
(19:55):
for you know, I know everybody's excited. Oh, the Giants
got John Harball. He won a Super Bowl. I mean, Joe,
if we're gonna pick nits here, he got fired. He
blew more double digit leads than any other coach in
the league, I believe in the last three or four years.
You know, he had a two time MVP and could
never break through in the AFC. Where are you on Hardball? Like,
if you're ranking the coaches in the division. Is he one.
Speaker 3 (20:18):
I think he's a heck of a football coach. But
you know, everybody says, it's just like quarterbacks have won
super Bowls. Tom's won seven, Troy's won you know three.
It's the team that was a football team that John didn't.
John wasn't on the field, John wasn't trying to make tackles.
John wasn't trying to run the football. I think I
think they were basically really sort of a one trick pony,
(20:41):
and then people started to wise up. I think it's
a heck of a move. And by the way, John,
I think Steve Bashatti he wanted I think John to stay.
John made the choice to leave. People say he got fired.
I don't believe that really. I believe that it was
like everything else in coaching. I believe it might have
been time for him to move on and accept a
(21:01):
different challenge. We saw with Mike Tomlin. We got ten
new coaches this year. Ten now, not everybody. You know,
some people decided to go someplace else, John being one
of them, and I think he chose a team. There's
no way a coach is going to leave a football
team unless you can go and have a quarterback just
not going to happen. Yeah, and he's got a he's
got a pretty darn good young one in Jackson. Dark
(21:24):
needs to be rained in a little bit before he
kills himself, but he's got a pretty good one there.
And so, you know, to me, I think, I think
it's a solid division. Like I think it's the best
division in football, and it will be probably the most competitive.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
Interesting so over say the Lions, Vikings, Bears, and Packers. Yeah, yeah,
or you know, I mean She's Chargers, Broncos, Raiders, Raiders.
Speaker 3 (21:50):
Yeah, I think so. I think this division is pretty
even cross. You know, it would be an interesting thing
to see him go one in one each in the division.
They they all got. I think we got better defensively
in Washington and Jayden's coming back. Philadelphia's been really good.
They sort of had a somewhat of an off year
last year with all the distractions and AJ's now someplace else. Yeah, Dallas,
(22:16):
I think got better defensively. They were not good at
all last year. And of course I thought as far
as the talent level in New York on the defensive
side of the ball, they're really good. And like I said,
they're getting some of their people back. They were injured
a lot, So you know, I think that is You
could argue and say other divisions are almost as competitive,
(22:38):
but they always have one team in there that you're
not certain of. And I think in this one, you
can look at every one of them say they got better.
Speaker 2 (22:46):
Interesting your take on the Rams training for Miles Garrett.
Obviously you made a good point earlier. It's a team sport.
Garrett is an upgrade over Jared Verse. But everybody's crowning
the Rams this offseason. Are you buying it?
Speaker 3 (22:59):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (23:00):
I am.

They're all in. They're all in. They've got the weapons everywhere.
Like I said, defense wins a championship, so you know,
I mean you're you're not going to outscore them, and
they're going to put points on the board. That's just
the way the offen That's the way Shawn's designed this
offense to put points on the board. I think Miles
going there was an indication we don't care about young guys.
(23:21):
We're not going to draft, We're not going to do
you know, we're not interested in developing guys. If we
get one, great, but if we have a chance to
get somebody special in this particular year, probably Matthews. Last year,
I think Shawn went out and he put his football
team together and he said, this is We're going to
make a run at the Roses. We're gonna we're gonna
do everything we can to be able to be in
(23:43):
the Super Bowl and win the Super Bowl because it's
actually going to be in their home stadium. Remember we're in.
Speaker 2 (23:49):
So FI this year, right so far?
Speaker 3 (23:50):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, sixty one. So yeah, I think that
I think they've loaded and said, okay, all in all,
the chips are on the table, we're going after it.
Hopefully everybody stays healthy, and if they do, I think
they're the odds on favorite to win.
Speaker 2 (24:04):
So no, you don't think Seattle could repeat at all?
Speaker 3 (24:07):
Well, anybody could repeat, saddle Seattle certainly could repeat. It's
a heck of a football team. But you know, like
I say, injuries play such a big part of it
as you go forward. But right now, I like the Rams,
I really do, and we'll we'll have a great indicator
because they're in the same division.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
So so you like the Rams in the NFC, who
you got in the AFC.
Speaker 3 (24:28):
Oh, that's a little more wide open I still, I still,
I don't see Kansas City falling too far away? You know,
was New England's a one time wonder with Drake adding
AJ what's it going to do that office? And I
saw somebody say that, you know, adding a J. Brown
would be like when like when Randy Moss went to
(24:49):
the New England Patriots. No, no, Randy Moss was an
absolute exception. Tom Brady threw fifty touchdown passes uh in
one of the years that Randy was there, and he
caught three of them. I just don't see the game
being that way anymore. And I know, you know, you
are they going to be able to appease agent? Are
they gonna be able to get him the ball enough
to keep him to a point where well, you know,
(25:11):
he's sort of happy? And I'm sorry, I maybe I
am a little old fashioned, but when you're on a
football team and you're in a football game and you
sit down on a bench and you start reading a book,
I just think there's something wrong with the moon and
the stars. I just I just don't get it. And
(25:32):
I just don't know how people tolerate that. I really don't.
You're there to support your team, you know, if you're
on offense, then a defense is on the field ruin
them on. It's part of the team. And if the
offense is on the field, the defense should be there.
I just that, to me is one of the most
baffling things I've ever seen in football, in this modern
(25:55):
era of football. Now. I know, back in the old days,
guys would smoke a cigarette on the sideline, maybe go
grab a hot dog. I mean, those those were the
old days. I know that like the old old days,
but this was this was something new that just I
scratched my head over and just wonder, how do you
tolerate it as a coach? How do you say it's okay?
(26:17):
What you know? I mean, it's supposed to be a
team game. And when you have individuals that decide to
do what they want to do and don't really, you know,
operate within the realm of what I believe as a team,
it makes me scratch my head quite a bit.
Speaker 2 (26:32):
Ye, So, Joe, we could wrap up with this. So
this kid, Brendan Soresby at Texas Tech, it tried to
go to the supplemental draft because there's just a mutiny
going on in college football, which is a mess. Bottom
line is he was a college kid at Indiana. He
was red shirting on the team or not playing, and
he was betting on sports, you know, like ten dollars,
(26:53):
bets on wrestling and is the next pitch going to
be a baller strike? He bets on some of his
own team, he bets on college football, and now he's
getting busted and paying the price. But the NFL recently
canceled a supplemental draft, which was his only avenue to
the league this year. I don't know, I haven't seen
any of your takes on this Soersby stuff, but man,
(27:14):
people are going crazy. They want this kid's head on
a pike. I'm kind of sort of shocked. Again. I
know he made nine thousand bets, Joe, but it was
about ninety thousand dollars.
Speaker 3 (27:24):
Right.
Speaker 2 (27:24):
He wasn't cleaning, he wasn't moving lines in Vegas.
Speaker 3 (27:27):
It isn't a dollar amount. It isn't a dollar amount.
Is when you you know, I know that gambling is
a big part of what the NFL is all about,
what athletics is about. We see it on college people
bet on college sports, people bet on professional sports. But
when you're in the game, it's really supposed to be taboo.
You're not supposed to do it. Basketball got an issue
(27:48):
where they've got some things going on, and this is
this was a college kid that was Betty game. He
was he was on the he was a player, and
he well, he wasn't suiting up.
Speaker 2 (27:59):
He wasn't suiting up, but he was involved in it.
Speaker 3 (28:01):
And they, you know, the evidently filed a lawsuit and
the judge in Lubbock said, okay, you're you know, you
had a problem. And I just think the NFL basically said,
we don't want to deal with this situation right now.
We don't want to see we don't want this sort
of drag through the mud. And that's why I think
(28:22):
they canceled the supplemental. Do you agree with it, the
canceling of the supplemental? Hey, yeah, it's the league's bigger
than I am. It's not a question of whether I
agree or disagree. It's something I think that they saw
that didn't benefit the National Football League and decided they
wanted to go in that direction. What this young man's
(28:43):
future is going to be, I think is yet to
be determined. All right.
