In this episode of 47 Morning Update w Ben Ferguson, Ben examines the escalating conflict between Democratic Party veterans and influential voices on the far left, focusing on James Carville’s criticism of Piker, the role of the Democratic Socialists of America, and what they argue are signs of growing tension within the party. They discuss ideological battles over socialism, party identity, economic policy, generational politics, and the potential electoral consequences of those divisions.

A growing dispute inside the Democratic Party is drawing national attention as longtime Democratic strategist James Carville publicly denounces streamer and self-described socialist Hasan Piker, arguing that Democratic Socialists should stop using the Democratic label. The clash raises a larger question: is the party experiencing a genuine ideological divide, or simply confronting the consequences of empowering its progressive wing? The debate comes as Democratic Socialists, progressive activists, and party establishment figures argue over the future direction of the party ahead of a major election. Comments from Carville, responses from Piker, and broader concerns about socialism, party branding, and voter coalitions have intensified the conversation.

Topics Covered:

  • James Carville’s criticism of Piker and the Democratic Socialists of America
  • Debate over whether progressive activists represent a faction of the Democratic Party or a separate movement
  • Discussion of Abdul El-Sayed and progressive political organizing
  • Arguments about socialism, government spending, inflation, and economic policy
  • The role of education, media influence, and generational political change
  • Questions about how ideological divisions could affect upcoming elections

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, I mean, there's two things that I know about
Hassan Paikin. One, he's an idiot, and two, he's not
a Democrat. So I don't answer for idiots, and I
don't answer for people who are not Democrats.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
And then you think about.

Speaker 3 (00:13):
James Carville, I'm like, bro, you architected the complete right-wing
ascent to neoliberalism in 96. He said one smart thing once,
which he seems to have forgotten.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Which is, it's the economy, stupid.

Speaker 4 (00:26):
You're listening to the 47 Morning Update with Ben Ferguson.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Good Thursday morning.

Speaker 5 (00:31):
It's nice to have you with us on the 47
Morning Update, and we've got a big story for you.
There is a civil war that is breaking out inside
the Democratic Party. The same people that used to say
that Donald Trump was the worst person in the world
and the biggest idiot in the world are now saying
their own colleagues are the biggest idiots they've ever seen.
And many Democrats are now demanding that the Democratic Socialists

(00:53):
of America drop the name Democratic.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Oh, it's not a joke. So what does this mean
for the midterms? I break it all down for you.

Speaker 5 (01:01):
And before we get to that, 25 years ago on
September the 11th, 2001, America faced the heartbreak of terrorism
at home. Three years ago, on October the 7th, 2023,
Israel endured that same heartbreak in the Holy Land. Different decades,
different attacks, the same evil. Each year, the International Fellowship

(01:23):
of Christians and Jews hosts Flags of Fellowship. It's a
movement where thousands of churches display memorial flags to honor
the 1,200 lives lost on October the 7th. And it's
a way to stand with Israel in faith, prayer, remembrance,
and solidarity. Now each flag represents a loved one, a
family forever changed, and a promise that we will not forget. Today,

(01:47):
hatred and violence still threaten our world, yet Scripture calls
on us to stand firm, to comfort the grieving, to
honor the lost, and shine a light in the darkness. Together,
we remember, we honor, and declare that evil will not
have the final word.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Now, I want you to join thousands of.

Speaker 5 (02:05):
Churches across America in this powerful act of remembrance and
support for Israel. Learn how you and your church can
participate in Flags of Fellowship at joinfof.org. Tell your church
about it today. That's joinfof.org. It's the 47 Morning Update,

(02:27):
and it starts right now.

Speaker 4 (02:29):
Story number one.

Speaker 5 (02:31):
So there's a civil war, that's what some are calling it,
within the Democratic Party right now over the radical left.
I'm talking about the Hassan Pikers, you know, the guy
that said that America deserved 9-11. And the Abdul El-Saeeds and,
you know, the AOCs and the Democratic Socialists of America. Now,
the question is, is it actually a civil war or

(02:53):
is it just buyer's remorse? James Carville, who is a
brilliant political mind, one of the best I've ever seen
on the Democratic side, a man who got the most
out of Bill Clinton and in many ways saved his
presidency multiple times over. He is now calling Hassan Piker
an idiot and demands that the Democratic Socialists of America

(03:15):
remove the word Democrat from their name.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Why?

Speaker 5 (03:20):
Because he says it's tarnishing the Democratic Party. Now, Democratic
socialists call themselves Democratic socialists because they believe that they
are a combination of the Democratic Party and socialism. James
Carmel is saying, no, no, no, no, no. You can't
have it. You can't have it at all. Now, Piker
is a self-described socialist who hates America. and has campaigned

(03:43):
with Democratic U.S. Senate candidate for the Democratic Party, Abdul El-Sayed.
He has become a leading voice of the far left
as socialists fight to influence the Democratic Party as a whole.
And that is where the, quote, civil wars, I would
describe it the fake civil war, actually are becoming a thing.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Quote, there are two things I know about Assam Piker. One,
he's an idiot.

Speaker 5 (04:07):
And two, he's not a Democrat. So I don't answer
for idiots. And I don't answer for people who are
not Democrats. Now, that's what James Carville said on Fox
News Channel. He can say that all he wants to.
But the reality is he absolutely is a Democrat. And
he absolutely is a member of the Democratic's wing of
the party. The idea that he's an idiot, by the way,

(04:29):
as James Carville described him, well, that's the part that's
pretty funny to me. Because this is an individual that
grew in its significance inside the left side of the
Democratic Party for years. They made him famous. They made
him rich. They watch his show. They listen to what
he says. And now you have Democrats that are campaigning

(04:51):
with Hassan Piker. Now, I want you to listen to
what James Carville had to say in its entirety on
the story with Martha McCallum on Fox News Channel. Listen
carefully to how mad he is and ask yourself the question,
why is it only now when we're getting close to
the election, when you're afraid you may actually lose in
the election, are you speaking out with this much anger?

Speaker 2 (05:14):
Why is it that it.

Speaker 5 (05:14):
Took so long for them to say, well, they're not
really what we are? Could it just simply be buyer's remorse?
I'll let you decide.

Speaker 6 (05:23):
Democratic Socialist of America standing by left-wing streamer Hassan Piker,
who once said the U.S. deserved 9-11. He later said
he did not mean that the U.S. deserved to be attacked,
calling his comment inappropriate as we close in on the
25th anniversary of September 11th in just several days. So
the GSA accusing the establishment Democrats, Republicans, and the media

(05:46):
of having, quote, an obsession with a Twitch streamer. Then,
adding Piker's handle and, quote, our Twitch streamer. With that,
we bring in longtime Democratic strategist and commentator James Carville. Jim,
always good to have you with us. Thank you for
joining me today.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
Well, thank you.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
Thank you.

Speaker 6 (06:03):
So, you know, I want to actually— go ahead.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Well, I mean, there's two things that I know about
Hassan Piker. Okay.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
One, he's an idiot.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
And two, he's not a Democrat. So I don't answer
for idiots, and I don't answer for people who are
not Democrats.

Speaker 6 (06:18):
All right, let me just play this quick soundbite of
Piker and El-Sayed, and you won't have to answer for him,
but this is what he answered for you.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
Watch.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
Okay, we got John Fetterman, James Carville, fantasizing about leaving
the party. I'm like, you're sweetening the deal.

Speaker 3 (06:33):
And then you think about James Carville, I'm like, bro,
you architected the complete right-wing ascent to neoliberalism in 96.
He said one smart thing once, which he seems to
have forgotten, which is, it's the economy, stupid.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
All right.

Speaker 6 (06:47):
So I'll say, Ed, the Michigan candidate who is about
six or seven points ahead last time I looked says
you've said one smart thing. It's the economy stupid, claiming
that that's where their focus is now.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
Well, you know, most people go through life and never
say a single smart thing, so I'm glad that he
thinks I said one smart thing. I'll take that. But
I can't answer for these left-wing idiots. Okay, some people,
and I have a pretty wide strong zone, by the way.
I don't expect everybody to agree with me. I understand that.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
I'm a Democrat.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
I'm part of a big coalition, a big tent, and
we all have an admission policy, but thank God Heisenpiker
doesn't want in our frat because we don't want him.

Speaker 6 (07:26):
All right, so, you know, with regard to the Big Ten,
you know, I see people sort of trying to walk
that line with these guys all the time. It could
have been— they could have been pushed out. They could have said, well,
you've got to run in your own party. We're not
the Democratic Socialists. Is that still a possibility, or do
you think that, you know, they're going to have some
success in six weeks from now?

Speaker 1 (07:49):
What I would tell a Democratic Socialist, why use— if you
hate the Democratic brand so much, why use our words? Yeah.
Go call yourself something else. Call yourself the Socialists of America.
Don't put the first word in your title Democratic because
that's the party. That's our party. That's the party of
civil rights. That's the party of women's rights. That's the

(08:10):
party of balanced budget. That's the party of prosperity. Don't
use our name. Make up your own name. That's what I.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
Would tell them.

Speaker 6 (08:18):
You know, I mean, obviously, there has been over the
last several years an inflation issue. We talk a lot
about affordability. You know, these guys don't really have an
answer for that other than spending more government money, which
is how we got this inflation in the first place.

Speaker 1 (08:34):
First of all, the United States has existed for 250 years.
Donald Trump hasn't been president for six of the 250.
And his person was responsible for one third of the
entire debt. So I'm very happy to see that people
are concerned about the debt. By the way, who is
the last president under which we had a balanced budget?

(08:54):
I happen to know the answer.

Speaker 2 (08:56):
Bill Clinton.

Speaker 6 (08:57):
Well, there's no Bill Clintons around in this group of Democrats.
Nobody's talking about welfare reform anymore, Jim.

Speaker 1 (09:07):
Well, because welfare has been reformed. We did it.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
We won.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
Victory. And by the way, there are a lot of
people in a Democratic Party. I mean, President Clinton, he
made 80 on August 19th. I know that because it's
his same birthday. My wife has the same birthday as
Temple Gore.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
We won. Well, these guys are talking.

Speaker 6 (09:27):
About expanding benefits programs dramatically. Free buses, free education. I
got to leave it there. I'm sorry we got you
at the end of the show. But thank you so much.
Good to see you.

Speaker 1 (09:37):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
Always appreciate it.

Speaker 5 (09:40):
You listen to James Carville there. Isn't it interesting how
he's trying to go back and just completely change? He's
saying these guys and the Democratic Socialists of America, they're
not actually us. We've got John Fetterman, James Carville. I
go back to what Hassan Piker was saying there with
El Saeed. fantasizing about leaving the party I'm like you're

(10:02):
sweetening the deal Piker said in that recent stream and
we played that for you a moment ago Carville by
the way again denouncing the DSA that's the part where
I just have to laugh you created them You absolutely
created them. You spoon-fed them. You bottle-fed them before that.

(10:24):
You raised them. The Democratic Party helped take over how
many different places? And not just in government, but also
how many different places in education, right? Countless times, countless times,
they took over public schools, middle schools, elementary schools, high schools,

(10:44):
and indoctrinated kids to hate this country. The universities, the
same thing. So what ended up happening? It's pretty clear.
They've decided to take a generation, which they did, Hasan
Piker is a part of it, and say America is
the worst country in the world and America is evil
and you must dismantle it. You must dismantle it. That's

(11:08):
what they've done. And now, He's coming out and he's saying,
get out of my party. This isn't your party. This
is my party. You're not a Democrat. Go start your
own party. And you notice Martha asked a very interesting
question there, and he didn't have a great answer for it.
In fact, he dodged it. Then why did you let
them run under the Democrat name? They ran the Democrat primary.

(11:30):
Why did you let them run in the Democratic primary?
Why is it that you let them act like they
are one of you if you're now claiming that that
you are not, that they are not one of you.
Secretary Scott Besson said this about socialists, and this is
the Hassan Pikers, it's the communists, the Marxist socialists. He
said this today on Larry Kudlow's show.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
It was very interesting.

Speaker 7 (11:52):
Listen. I think we have a generational opportunity in the
Western hemisphere. As you said, it was led by Argentina
and the reforms there. Everyone said it couldn't be done.
And now we are seeing that the inflation drop the
change in economic circumstances. And, Larry, I thought what was

(12:14):
most interesting, and when you talk about socialism here in
the U.S., when we look at the demographic of those voters,
they are overeducated and under-earning. So these are underachievers who
are jealous of those who want to go and work
every day. And if you were to dissect the last

(12:35):
election that President Malay had, that it was the poorest
segment of society and the young people who came out
and voted for him. That's right. But as you said,
we're seeing Argentina, we're seeing Bolivia, we're seeing Colombia, we're
seeing Chile come back, Ecuador. And I think we could
see many more.

Speaker 5 (12:53):
You know, you go back to the quote there from
Secretary Besson on socialists. They are overeducated and under earning.
So these are they're underachievers who are jealous of those
who want to go And work every day, work hard
every day.

Speaker 2 (13:08):
He's right.

Speaker 5 (13:09):
So when you hear these Democrats now freaking out, it's
not because of what the democratic socialists believe in. It's
because they are afraid. It is because they are very
afraid that they're going to lose the election, which means
they lose power. If they didn't like these people, they
should have policed them, but they love them. They, they, they,
they created them out of nothing. They supported them. They

(13:33):
gave them their money. They allowed them to run as Democrats.
They didn't kick them out of the party. And now
they're having buyer's remorse. That is what this is. I
go back to Hassan Piker and what he said. I don't, quote,
I hate, you know, I hate America. We deserve 9-11, right?
Hassan Piker said that. That is what Hassan Piker said.

(13:56):
That is who the Democratic Party has allowed to become
so big.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
That's the reality of this.
