In this episode of the 47 Morning Update w Ben Ferguson, Ben examines the collapse of U.S.-Canada trade talks, the Trump administration's decision to impose new tariffs, Canada's planned response, and the potential economic consequences for manufacturers, businesses, workers, and consumers on both sides of the border. They also discuss comments made during the Michigan Senate race involving Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed, Vice President JD Vance, and broader debates over the direction of the Democratic Party.

Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada have broken down, and new 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian goods are now in effect. The dispute marks a major escalation between two of North America's closest trading partners and raises questions about supply chains, manufacturing, consumer prices, and the future of cross-border commerce. The Trump administration argues that Canada has long protected key sectors of its economy while maintaining broad access to American markets. Canadian officials reject that characterization and say U.S. demands threatened Canadian sovereignty and independent trade policy. With Canada preparing retaliatory tariffs, the conflict is moving beyond negotiation and into an active trade confrontation.

Topics Covered:

  • Collapse of U.S.-Canada trade negotiations
  • New 50% U.S. tariffs on Canadian imports
  • Canada's planned retaliatory tariff measures
  • Potential impacts on manufacturing and supply chains
  • Trump administration's argument for reciprocal trade policies
  • Controversy involving Abdul El-Sayed and JD Vance

Well, Rogers told me they've been trying to do it
for twenty years, and he'd come down. I think he
said he was down two hundred and eleven times to
try and get it done, and when he came to

turned out to be much bigger than we ever even
thought possible.

Speaker 5 (02:38):
It's a forty seven morning update and it starts right now.

Speaker 4 (02:41):
Story number one.

Speaker 5 (02:42):
We are now being told that the trade talks between
the United States and Canada have collapse. It was a
very simple story, very clear that this was a collapse
of the conversation.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
Here's how it was on Fox News.

Speaker 6 (02:58):
Trade talks between the US, US and Canada collapsing overnight,
A fifty percent tariff on twenty billion dollars with the
Canadian goods taking effect at midnight. The Trump administration says
Canada walked away from a deal that would affect tariffs
on deal aluminum, autos, and lumber. Now Canada is promising
to hit back dollar for dollar, raising the stakes in

(03:20):
a major fight with one of America's closest trading partners.

Speaker 5 (03:24):
Now, President Donald Trump is making it very clear Canada
is not going to get any special treatment, as he
described it, simply because it is America's neighbor. The President
is saying, no, We're not going to allow that to happen.
So let me explain what just happened. Over the last

(03:44):
several days. President Trump temporarily paused a new round of
massive terriffs against Canada because he believed a deal was
essentially finished. Trump announced that the pause was based on
the fact that Canada, the United States, and his words
have a deal, but the deal never got crossed the
finish lawn and negotiations collapse on Friday. Both sides are,
of course now pointing the finger at one another, and

(04:06):
the Trump administration is now saying Canada came back at
the last minute with demands that the United.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
States simply wasn't willing to accept.

Speaker 5 (04:14):
Canada, of course, says that Donald Trump and Washington was
demanding concessions that threatened Canadian sovereignty and its ability to
make its own trade decisions. And President Trumpets essentially said enough.
The United States has now imposed fifty percent tariffs on
roughly twenty billion worth of Canadian products. Now these aren't

(04:35):
hypothetical tariffs. They are now in effect. And we're talking
about Canadian goods ranging from wine and other alcoholic beverages,
to dairy products, to textiles, to electronics, to paper products,
to honey, even hockey equipment. Now, these new duties also
go beyond some of the protections that previously existed under

(04:57):
the USMCA trade agreement. Now, why is Donald Trump doing
this is a question that a lot of people were asking. Well,
the White House's argument is extremely straightforward. The Trump administration
has said Canada has spent protecting parts of its economy
while expecting largely unrestricted access to the enormous American consumer market.

(05:21):
Take alcohol, for example. The White House using this over
the weekend, and they pointed out that beginning in March
of twenty twenty five, Canadian provinces and territories stopped purchasinger
selling American alcoholic beverages Ontario pulled US products from its
government controlled liquor system, and then Quebec took similar action.

(05:42):
Now some provinces subsequently reversed course, but most did not.
Then you have dairy Canada's supply management system has been
long a source of friction with American farmers. Then you
look at automobiles, then you look at steel and aluminum.
And the Trump Administration's basic position is this, you cannot

(06:02):
restrict American products and protect Canadian industries and then demand
unlimited access to America's markets and to American consumers. Now,
the White House says that fifty percent tariffs are specifically
intended to offset what it calls Canada's discriminatory treatment of
American commerce and trade. And Trump is approaching this from

(06:26):
a position he has maintained for years. America has the
biggest consumer market in the world. Access to our American
market has tremendous value to anyone else in the world.
And if another country wants access to the US, then
President Trump believes that America should use that leverage to
demand reciprocal treatment, a fair deal. Let's be clear, reciprocal

(06:48):
treatment for American workers and American businesses. Now, Canada, they
now say they are not backing down on this at all.
The Canadian Prime Minister Carney has announced so that Canada
will retaliate at dollar for dollar beginning September the eighth.
Canada plans tariffs against American goods, including products involving steel, dairy, electronics,

(07:12):
and agricultural equipment. Carney is calling Trump's tariffs and an
economic attack, and then said Canada will not surrender it
sovereignty simply to reach a deal with Washington, and that
means we now have something very different from a negotiating threat.
We potentially have an actual North American trade war. Now,
you got to remember how economically connected we are. And

(07:34):
I'm saying this is you know, whether you're Canadian listening
to this or American listening to this, we are absolutely interconnected.
The United States and Canada don't simply sell finished products
to each other. Our manufacturing systems are very much intertwined.
And this is going to be a problem for both countries.
All right, Components can cross the border, go into another product,

(07:56):
cross back again, and eventually end up in a finished
vehicle or piece of machinery. That happens all the time.
By the way, same thing happens with Mexico. So when
you start putting fifty percent tariffs on products moving across
the border, businesses now have to make a serious decision.
Do you absorb the cost number one? Do you raise
the price for consumers number two? Or do you find

(08:16):
another supplier number three? And this is the outcome that
President Trump wants. Do they move production into the United
States of America instead of having it in Canada. Now,
if you need the American business more you need the
Canadian business, are you gonna move those manufacturing companies into

(08:38):
the US so you don't have to deal with this
trade tariff and paying these tariffs with the United State,
with Canada and the US right Like, that's a simple question,
and the present's betting on the answer is going to
be fine, We'll move to America. Now, this is a
strategic gamble, no doubt, but it's one that is based
in Trump's tear policy and the presidents that he won
CEOs looking at a fifty per tariff and saying this,

(09:01):
why am I manufacturing this in Canada when I could
be building it in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Tennessee and
avoid the tariffs all together? And the White House is
already pointing by the way to reshoring this announcement in
the automobile industry as evidence that Donald Trump's broader trade
strategy is influencing corporate investment decisions, and that has certainly

(09:25):
been a real thing in America. There's also the other
side of this, right Canada is very angry right now.
Canada is very mad. And how much leverage do they
have over the United States of America. Not near as much.
They have a smaller economy, they don't have as much manufacturing.
They have a lot of goods that they need to

(09:46):
export into America. And so when you look at what
they are doing right now, the question is who flinches first.
Donald Trump believes Canada will flinch first. I actually believe
there's an extremely good chance that that is exactly what
is going to happen, that Canada is going to flinch first.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
Now.

Speaker 5 (10:05):
The President is also made it clear that Canada's just
been taking advantage of US for far too long, and
this goes back to his trade negotiations.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
All over the world.

Speaker 5 (10:13):
There are too many countries that were taking advantage of
the US and getting full access to US, to the
United States of America while giving us limited or no
access to their consumers. The President saying, I just want
a fair playing field, that's all I want.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
And what did they say in Canada? No.

Speaker 5 (10:31):
Now, they may be used to America being pretty darn weak.
They may be used to America being kind of woosy
on trade negotiations, and they may be hoping that that's
exactly what's going to happen, that the President will flinch.
I don't believe that he's going to flinch. I think
he's dug in and it's based on principal an a
policy that makes sense for Americans.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
This is why a lot of people voted for Donald
Trump in the first place.

Speaker 4 (10:57):
Now, story number two, there is another.

Speaker 5 (10:59):
Example that I want to tell you about right now
about just how extreme and how radical the DSA actually is.
Now you have to look no further this time into
and to just deal with a basic headline, and it
is one that if you are a conservative, this should
terrify you that we are now at this point where

(11:22):
this is where the Democratic Party has gone. You look
in a guy by the name of Abdul l said,
he is now out there attacking jd Vance's marriage. Why
on Earth would a Senate Democratic candidate attack Jadvance's marriage

(11:43):
his wife? Well, it is all because of something that
jd Vance said. Now, I'm going to play for you
what jd Vance said so that you understand exactly what
he said before I tell you what El Said's response was,
and it was violent, grotesque, and also extremely racist.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
Here is Jeddie.

Speaker 5 (12:03):
Vance in his own words, and then you'll understand how
egregious this is.

Speaker 7 (12:09):
It's sometimes actually hard to understand, like what do these
modern Democrats actually stand for? But look what they say.
Pay close attention and they'll lead these little hints of
what they actually care about. Now, hey, l say ed
this guy running for Senate in Michigan. He once argued
not too long ago that criticisms of sharia law were

(12:30):
rooted in white supremacy. I'd love to go back in
time and tell my papal that there's a man who
claims to stand for working people, who says, not only
should we have sharia law, but if you criticize it,
you're a white supremacist. That's not my patpal's Democrat party,
my friends, all.

Speaker 5 (12:47):
Right, so let's talk about why that story is important.
What Jeddie Vance is doing is he's reminding people that
the Democratic Party has become so extreme that Democrats of
yesterday would not even wreckognize their party today. I believe
JFK would be a Republican today. I think there's a
chance Bill Clinton of the nineteen nineties would be a

(13:08):
Republican today. That is how extreme the left has gone.
And el Said has lost his mind over those comments.
In a social media post over the weekend, al Said wrote,
so do we think JD is taking Usha? That's his
wife all right? The second lady with him back in

(13:29):
time to meet Papa or no, with a link to
that video. Now, Vance's wife, Usha and her family are Hindu,
so this is not only a racist statement, but is
an incredibly nasty statement coming from Alsaid. And by the way,
they're Hindu and they would not impose real law on Americans.

(13:50):
That is another part of this conversation because Alsaid has
refused not only to apologize for his racist remarks about
Vance's wife and family, but it's also important to note
that Elsaid's campaign has confirmed that he actually complies with
Sree law in his personal life. Now, this all comes
from a comment from nine when he described it as

(14:12):
being himself as being quote in his religion is a
lifelong obligation, say later respond to Vance's comments during an interview,
setting quote, He's painting this picture of going back in
time to talk to his papa about me. Now, why
is he pointing to me? Why is don Trump pointing
to me? They're pointing to me to try and say

(14:32):
somehow I'm less of an American than they are. What
does that have to do with this? I don't know
the color of my skin, how I pray, question mark.
But the confusing thing about it is that he thinks
there are some people who are more American than others
because they can point to their papa who was here earlier. Now,

(14:53):
obviously that's not even close to what Vance was talking about.
What he was saying was the Democratic Party has become
so radical that is papaal, who is a Democrat, would
not recognize it. He then goes on, I'll say to
ask this question quote, and my question to him, referring
to Vance, is simply, why is it how do you
look your parents in laws in the eye and say

(15:15):
that somehow they're less American than you are? Because that's
what he's implying here. That's by the way, not what
JD Vance implied at all. That goes back to the
racist statement that has been put out.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
There by L said.

Speaker 5 (15:29):
Now, this is a very very very very very tight race.
You look at the most recent pulling Michigan's Republican Senate
candidate Mike Rodgers and lsaid divertually tied in the general
election race. Lsaid, now is doing everything he can to
try to undermine JD. Vans, undermine the president, and undermine

(15:49):
Mike Rodgers. And so what he's saying is, Hey, I'm
going to go after the wife of JD. Vance and
her religion and the color of her skin and then say, oh, well,
I guess somehow Republicans are racist, Like that's pretty funny. Well,
let me also remind you of L said when he
said this in an interview as well.

Speaker 8 (16:09):
Well, you know, Jesus' Peace and Blessings be upon him
was considered radical in his time too, and there is
a radical nature to being willing to stand forthright in
a time of corruption.

Speaker 5 (16:23):
Southside says that Jesus was radical, so therefore it's you
should support me because.

Speaker 2 (16:28):
I'm a radical. He's admitting that he is a radical.
Is alness. By the way, it's very different than what.

Speaker 5 (16:35):
Jesus believed in let's just point that out as well.

Speaker 4 (16:39):
