Steve Yates delivers a Nation States weekend update on the major national security and geopolitical developments shaping the U.S. competition with Iran and China.

Steve examines the attempted attack aboard a FlyDubai flight bound for Israel and developments in the United Kingdom, and discusses what they could mean for Iran, the IRGC, and the possibility of further military action. The FlyDubai investigation remains ongoing; President Trump has suggested a possible Iranian connection and threatened a strong response if one is established, while officials have cautioned that the motive and any connection to Tehran have not yet been confirmed.

Then, Steve turns to the global AI race with China, U.S. energy security, the Strait of Hormuz, and the strategic importance of Alaska and Greenland. He explains his view of how expanded American energy production, access to rare earth minerals, and cooperation with allies could reduce China's leverage over critical supply chains.

Plus, Steve assesses the proposed South Korean investment in Alaska energy infrastructure and what it could mean for U.S. energy dominance and America's allies in the Indo-Pacific. Trump announced plans involving a $54 billion South Korean investment in an Alaska natural-gas project, although South Korean officials have indicated that participation remains subject to commercial considerations.

From Iran and the IRGC to China, AI, energy, rare earths, Alaska, and the Strait of Hormuz, Steve Yates breaks down the stories to watch heading into the weekend.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome in for a Nation States Update this Friday afternoon,
October 2nd. I'm Steve Yates, host of Nation States with Yates.
This week we had two episodes, one on the new
calculus in the Strait of Hormuz in Iran, the other
a status check on the Trump-Xi summitry and the China challenge.
A few big developments unfolded this week to add to

(00:21):
your watch list over the weekend. Terrorism on fly Dubai
and in the United Kingdom increased the likelihood that military
action could be on the horizon. could be the U.S.,
it could be allies, it could be a joint operation.
It could be targeted to impose justice on the terror attempts,
but it could also be more strategic to further degrade

(00:41):
the Revolutionary Guard pushing for change within Iran. On China,
the president hosted the most powerful gathering of tech executives
with two takeaways, private sector-led AI safety guidelines, an absolute
commitment to a U.S.-led AI coalition winning the AI race
versus China. The cherry on top was a massive announcement

(01:02):
of South Korean investment going to Alaska. It builds out
infrastructure to unleash natural gas to fuel America, but also
East Asian allies. It's a huge economic boom. It insulates
the U.S. and allies from global supply and price fluctuations.
It's a severe blow to Chinese efforts to use choke
points as leverage against U.S. allies. The Alaska development, together

(01:25):
with Greenland, opens huge opportunities for U.S. supply of rare earths.
Summing it all up, Iran blockade and military escorts are working.
Oil supply has recovered for all but Iran. Maximum pressure
on Iran is working. Terrorists may now have provoked potentially
decisive action that could defeat the IRGC within Iran. America

(01:47):
is the global superpower on AI, and the absolute top U.S.
executives are unified in a commitment to keep it that way.
Add on Alaska and Greenland unleashing... energy and trumping China's
rare earths leverage? And who knows? Maybe 2026, the election
surprise is that America woke up and has decided it
wants to win. With that, I'm Steve Yates from Nation

(02:10):
States with Yates. Till next time, stay strong, America.
