Dr. Nicole Saphier breaks down two major health policy stories making headlines right now.

First, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. signals a potential shift in how the FDA approaches peptides—a fast-growing but loosely regulated space in wellness, anti-aging, and performance medicine. What could tighter FDA oversight mean for patients, doctors, and access to these treatments? Dr. Saphier explains why more regulation could actually lead to safer use, better data, and even future insurance coverage.

Then, attention turns to leadership at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With no confirmed director and rising public health concerns—including a troubling measles resurgence—reports suggest the White House may be eyeing a new candidate to restore credibility and unify messaging. Why this role matters now more than ever—and what strong leadership could mean for public trust.

Speaker 1 (00:05):
Welcome to Wellness on Mass. I'm doctor Nicole Saffire. This
is your weekly rundown. Well, it's very timely what we're
going to start out with this week because there have
been a couple of significant developments happening all at once
and they're getting a lot of attention. So first, we
talked about peptides earlier this week, right well as if

(00:26):
he listened to our podcast himself, as though Wellness and
Mass was something that Secretary Kennedy RFK Junior listened to.
RFK Junior is now signaling a push for the FDA
to reevaluate peptides now. Peptides, as we mentioned this week,
have been a gray zone topic for a while. They're

(00:48):
used in wellness, anti aging, and even performance setting like athletes,
but not always clearly regulated or consistently studied at the
level we would hope for for a widespread medical use. Now,
if the FDA does move forward, as Secretary Kennedy is
signaling they might, they would reevaluate some of these peptides.

(01:12):
This could mean tighter oversight, more structured clinical data requirements,
and potentially clear guidance for both doctors like myself and
the patients. That's not a bad thing, let me tell you,
it's really not. Do I love the idea of regulation, No,
But when it comes to medical things, regulation is there

(01:34):
to protect us, right, it really is. It could maybe
limit access in the short term, especially for people who
are currently using these compounds through you know, compounding pharmacies,
wellness clinics or whatever. But at the same time, it
could also give us that robust data that we need

(01:54):
to show that they work. And therefore physicians have a
little bit more insight on how to use them, how
to use them correctly, how to minimize risk, and who knows,
maybe your insurance will even cover them. So I see
this as a good thing. I'm glad that they're looking
into them a little bit more because you can talk
about them all you want, but unless you have data

(02:16):
showing a benefit or a lack of benefit, you know,
it's really hard for me to get behind something. But
also another big headline came out this week a report
suggesting that the White House may have a preferred candidate
in mind for the next CDC director. Now I don't
think I need to remind you, but the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, you know, the CDC has been

(02:39):
without an actual director since last summer, and I don't
want to get into all the details and the drama
of everything that has gone on, but to say that
the CDC has been a mess this last year is
an understatement. So the report came out, Now, mind you,
this is not an official announcement from the h or

(03:01):
the White House, but it is report. Whether it was
an intentionally leaked report or not, I don't really know,
but the reality is it sounds like there's conversation regarding
the CDC director. The CDC director shapes national public health
messaging policy priorities and how aggressively respond to emerging health issues.

(03:23):
Let's remember, we're still seeing higher cases of measles outbreak
throughout our country than we have seen in any of
the recent years, and we're actually at risk of losing
our eradication status. It's pretty sad, pretty embarrassing from a
public health perspective. So we really do need some strong
leadership at the CDC. So good news is the person

(03:47):
who they're saying is a quote unquote favorite. She has
decades long experience in public health, someone who is well respected.
I think she actually would do a very good job,
not only does she have a medical degree, but I
believe she also went to law school as well. So
when you are tasked to run a very large organization

(04:10):
and command the respect of people, she is the person.
She is not some roague person that has been cherry
picked by anyone. She's someone who has earned her way
to being considered for this role. And I'm not even
going to name names just because that this was an
incorrect reporting. But if the person being reported this week

(04:34):
actually becomes a CDC director, I think that it is
a great pick, and I'm glad to see the conversation
being had for people who potentially bring together some of
the extremism that is happening. The CDC has lost a
lot of respect, not only during COVID but since COVID,
and we have a lot of vaccine skepticism. We're in

(04:56):
the midst of a measles outbreak crisis. So I would
love to see someone who is not political, someone who
not only has the respect of the administration, but also
has the respect of the medical public to try and
bridge some of these gaps. And it looks like we
may be moving that way. I'll keep you informed as always.

(05:18):
This is often cool Saptfire. Thank you so much for
listening to Wellness on MASS. Make sure you listen to
Wellness on MASS on iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts when you where
you get your podcasts, and I'll see you next time.
