Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Welcome in. Good morning. Is it Labor Day? Labor Day.
It is Labor Day.
Speaker 3 (00:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
And this is the Dan Patrick Show.
Speaker 4 (00:15):
Rob Parker with former All-Pro safety, of course, Kerry Rhodes,
who we normally would do the odd couple.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
That's right.
Speaker 4 (00:22):
Kerry fill in for Kelvin Washington. And we're sitting in
for Dan and the Danettes.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
And man... Can the rain stop here in Los Angeles? No,
keep it going.
Speaker 5 (00:34):
It like rained all day yesterday. Keep it going a
little bit, Rob. It's been hot.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
It's been hot out here.
Speaker 4 (00:39):
I was like, my goodness gracious. Man, we got a
great show for you today. A lot of stuff to
get to. Of course, it's a holiday, and of course,
I'm working. You know what I mean? That's what I do.
It seems like I do that with you. I'm kind
of like, I might be the new Rob Parker when
it comes to that. There you go. Nothing wrong with that, right?
Get there, get it done. And remember, you can watch us.
(00:59):
Live on YouTube right now. Just search Odd Couple FSR
on YouTube. Hit that subscribe button. And after that, after
you're done, you can tap the icon, the thumbs up icon,
I should say.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Comment away. Let us know if.
Speaker 4 (01:15):
You agree with me or Carrie and go check out
the YouTube channel right now. We appreciate everybody. Just search
Odd Couple FSR and subscribe. Appreciate everyone because people have...
Subscribe to the Odd Couple YouTube channel. It continues to grow,
and we're very, very happy about that. A lot to
get into, especially, oh, my God, college football, Michigan, all that.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
We're going to do that. But I guess you could
say a little breaking news.
Speaker 4 (01:43):
Tua has been named the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Where are you on that? Are you overly surprised? I'm not.
Not surprised at all.
Speaker 5 (01:51):
I mean, he's going to be the best player that
they have in this situation to get it done. Penix
hasn't had a lot of time this camp.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
He's been injured.
Speaker 5 (01:59):
And for me, this whole thing with Tua and the Falcons, man,
it was a couple years ago when he got hurt
and he kept getting the concussion stuff, and I was
literally scared for him. I wanted him to retire, Rob.
The fact that he came back and had a terrible
year last year with Miami, it didn't seem right at
all for him last year. It seems like he was
trying to overcompensate for Some of the talk that people
(02:21):
have been talking about throughout the years.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
But it's crazy. This is a guy who put up
a 70 piece.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
You know what I'm like? And that's what I'm saying.
So for me in this situation.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
And some of his numbers two years ago, he had
some of the best numbers in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
He did, Rob. As a quarterback.
Speaker 5 (02:34):
That's why with this team, they have everything else. And
that's the crazy part. Like you can't pick anybody in
the South to win it really. But I think Atlanta
has the most talent. And if he can just go
out there and play like like tour like we know
then i think that team can be good man so
it's up it sucks it's a good call but it's
one of those things where come on man they gotta
get together and.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
As far as panics i think at some point the
falcons gonna have to cut their panics out i mean appendix.
Speaker 5 (02:59):
Out here you go you starting early you're gonna go
that way early okay what you got they need to
cut it they need to cut it.
Speaker 4 (03:06):
Out they absolutely at some point i don't know appendix
I've seen flashes, but, I mean, Penix, if he's that guy,
should have beat out Tua.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
You know what I mean?
Speaker 4 (03:16):
Like, he's the guy that was drafted there.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
He's the guy.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
All the signs are that they're not happy with him, right?
If you're Penix, I don't know how you feel anything
other than, you know, they really don't believe in me.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
No, they can't.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
Right?
Speaker 5 (03:29):
He just hasn't had enough time to be healthy either.
And that's been his track record already. I mean, Rob,
he had multiple injuries in college where we saw flashes,
but we never seen enough from him.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
No doubt. But the big story. Oh, my God. Wake
the kids.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
Call the neighbors. The Michigan Western Michigan. Because that's what
it was. It was as bad as it gets. It
was so bad, so crooked, I had to make sure,
I thought at least, that Jim Harbaugh was still coaching. Because,
of course, there was cheating involved, and Michigan was involved.
(04:04):
So I just figured, Jim Harbaugh, is he still coach?
I thought he went to the Chargers.
Speaker 5 (04:08):
Don't be giving no residual effects of this stuff to
Harbaugh right now.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
Get him on.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
Cheating is cheating, and Michigan always seems to be on this.
I'm going to say this character. It's moments like this
where I think we should abolish instant replay. Because instant replay,
to me, sure, you want to get calls right, right?
(04:35):
But when a call is, when you take away something
from I think it hurts even more. And that's what
I felt like. I don't want to hear about there's
another clock. Like I've watched football my whole life. What
other clock.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Is there, right?
Speaker 4 (04:53):
Shouldn't that be there's a game clock. There's a clock
in the stadium. That's not the game clock. Like NBC
flashed a cup, you know, final.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
12-7, Western Michigan. I turned it off.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
Of course you did. And Michigan fans, disgraceful. You're going
to run out on the field after you play Western.
What were they, 40-point favorites?
Speaker 6 (05:22):
27.
Speaker 7 (05:22):
27?
Speaker 8 (05:22):
28, 27, yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
27-point favorites?
Speaker 4 (05:28):
And rush the field and make it like, oh, my God,
look at what we just did. What an embarrassing performance
by Michigan.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
It was a terrible performance by Michigan.
Speaker 7 (05:38):
Right?
Speaker 5 (05:39):
And, Rob, the thing about that team, we know that
Bryce Underwood was one of the biggest recruits ever coming
into Michigan.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Had a lot of hype.
Speaker 5 (05:48):
And it was a former All-Pro safety that went to
their camp this offseason, Rob. Eric Weddle, he went to
their camp, and he left, and he said, that quarterback
isn't as good as people are saying. And then he
comes out against Western Michigan and plays the way he played.
That doesn't bode well for them, and especially, I mean,
how much money they paid the kids. So they're going
to have to regroup. Terrible look. Western Michigan almost got
(06:12):
the upset. Should have probably got the upset. No, stop
saying probably should have. They got the upset. They got
the upset.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
I've seen the angles. I've seen the replay. And I
saw the clock go to zero, zero. And this other
idea that, oh, no, but that's not the clock. There's
another second on there. So what they say, tenths of
a second? Because it wasn't a second. It's unbelievable that
this is where we are.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
You know what it reminds me of?
Speaker 9 (06:40):
What?
Speaker 4 (06:40):
It reminds me of instant replay when guys steal bases
in baseball.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
So they hold the tag on the runner.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
They watch the replay, and he comes up a millisecond
in the slide.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
He beat the ball there. He beat the tag.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
The guy holds the tag on him, and at some point,
his foot comes a little bit off the bag during
the slide.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
They have to slow it down so slow to see.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
That is not what instant replay is for. It's for
missing obvious calls. They said college football back. That's not
what you want.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
That's not. You feel like you got cheated.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
You had to take a shower after that game and
go like, what did I just watch?
Speaker 2 (07:26):
A little cigarette or something as well?
Speaker 4 (07:28):
Hey, I'm sure Michigan fans had a cigarette and baby oil,
you know, feeling good after they just, you know, didn't
have their season wrecked in week one against, right?
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Yeah. Western Michigan, come on. Yeah, no, Rob.
Speaker 5 (07:46):
I'm not going to say you don't need instant replay.
I'm not on that bandwagon.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
I'm down. I'm down on instant replay. You're down on it.
If you continue to do this, which is take away moments, seriously.
That's true. Okay, as a sports fan, dude, are you perfect?
Speaker 10 (08:02):
No.
Speaker 4 (08:03):
Nobody's perfect. Why are we looking for this perfection moment?
In sports. It doesn't make sense. And every time, because
humans are involved, guess what happens?
Speaker 2 (08:15):
There are mistakes. You watch the NFL every week.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
There's a hole. There's a play. Every week. I agree
with that. So what are we doing? You're not... You're
not fixing it.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
If you told me it was foolproof and you got
every call that was wrong right and you didn't blow
any calls the other way, then maybe I would sign up.
I was okay. Yes, you could point to maybe two
or three calls. You've watched a million games. Yes, there's
a couple games where you go, ah, they blew it
or that. But for the most part, for the most part,
(08:51):
It's not an issue. Even with the pitch, the ABS
system in baseball, umpires are nailing it or killing it.
Do you know that as far as their rate of
getting the calls right?
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
And the ones that they miss are just a little
bit outside or a little bit high.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
It's unbelievable how good they are.
Speaker 5 (09:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
To me, it has reinforced how good Major League umpires are.
Speaker 11 (09:18):
Really?
Speaker 2 (09:18):
And there are bad ones. Don't get me wrong.
Speaker 7 (09:20):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
There's some bad ones. But go look. Go look at
the percentage. It's really high on how many calls they
get right. And my point is, we don't need replay.
If you're going to pull victories away... And you're going
to get it wrong from human error anyway.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
I don't even, I'm down on replays. That has soured me.
Speaker 4 (09:45):
And I've seen other, as I say, every Sunday you
watch NFL football as the season's about to kick off.
And I shake my head all the time because they
don't get the calls right.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
Yeah, no, it's going to be hard.
Speaker 5 (09:57):
And you said you hit something right there with the
human error part. There is a human element to sports
that there was. I guess there's like a it felt
more natural in that way, Rob. But if you're talking
about wanting to get things right, and I think that's
the part now, when you start adding gambling and all
these things to the equation.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
Like, you have to get it right. I don't care. No, no,
I hear you, but you have to get it right.
But they don't get it right, is what I'm saying.
You know how many people had.
Speaker 5 (10:25):
But who said they didn't get it right? You're just
saying you didn't see the extra clock or whatever, but you.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
Can't just say.
Speaker 4 (10:32):
I watched the replay with the clock, and he didn't
touch the ball when the clock— Okay, and now you're
going to tell me, no, there's a double clock in
the back that we keep that's different, and the referees
knew that that clock had less than a second on it.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
Yeah, we had an expert come on.
Speaker 5 (10:48):
Was it Mike Pereira that came on and said they
shouldn't have used the other clock as well?
Speaker 2 (10:52):
Did you see that yet? Yeah, he said they shouldn't have.
He said they shouldn't have.
Speaker 7 (10:55):
Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
This is what I'm talking about.
Speaker 4 (10:59):
In that situation, you got to understand the circumstance and
the idea that... Here's my point. A guy makes a
big error, he should just... make the play, and the
game should be over. Nobody goes, come on, man, he
would have made that play 99 out of 100. That
(11:21):
guy's out. Just call him out and the game's over.
Speaker 12 (11:23):
No!
Speaker 4 (11:24):
Because that's the human element that's a part of the game.
Just like fans have gotten calls go their way sometimes,
fans have gotten calls to go the opposite way, where
you're pissed. And you know sometimes as a fan, you
got a call, your team got a call.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
And you're like... Dude, we've been getting jobbed all the time.
I'll take this one, right? Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
They owe us one from three years ago on that play.
All I'm saying is I've soured on instant replay. That,
when you take the fans' joy away from watching something,
and now every time, you know how many people had
the money line on Western Michigan?
Speaker 2 (12:03):
You know what I mean? Like, they did. They're like, yeah,
they'll get hammered or whatever or whatever.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
Or the plus 27, which they would have won anyway.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
But you know what I mean? They had a bet
or something.
Speaker 9 (12:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
And you see something and go, what? They cheated for
Michigan again?
Speaker 4 (12:20):
That's what people walked away with, feeling like they cheated
for Michigan.
Speaker 13 (12:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (12:26):
No, Rob, literally, I turned it off. When they threw
the Hail Mary, out of bounds, I was like, oh,
that game's over. There's no time left. I turned it off.
I get in the group. I see the group chat.
The group chat coming in.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
It wasn't even in the end zone.
Speaker 5 (12:39):
It was in the end zone. But what they said, Rob,
this is the explanation, though. So this is what they said.
So the guy was already out of bounds. So as
soon as he touched the ball, even at that one second,
you see that. That's when the ball was dead. You
see the ball touching the ground, one, zero, it's over.
But he was already out of bounds. And when he
touched it, that was the explanation. So when they get
(13:01):
the explanation, it's right.
Speaker 3 (13:02):
It's right.
Speaker 5 (13:04):
And so when you say the replay didn't work out,
it worked out. If he was out of bounds, that
was a judgment.
Speaker 4 (13:10):
But I'm saying it didn't work out because you can't
have two clocks.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
Seriously. You can't.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
And today's technology, you can't sync up the clocks. It
doesn't even make sense. Why are people in the stadium
watching one clock?
Speaker 2 (13:28):
That's right.
Speaker 4 (13:29):
And then NBC's broadcast in the game, they put final
12-7 Western Michigan.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
Yeah. That's what I'm trying to say to you.
Speaker 4 (13:37):
So if NBC and the people doing the broadcast, nobody
on the... I've been listening. Nobody said, oh, wait a minute,
we need to check the other clock.
Speaker 6 (13:48):
Nope.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
Because nobody knew there was another clock. Did you know
there was another clock yesterday? No. From the game?
Speaker 6 (13:54):
No.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
This is what I'm saying. So it leaves....
Speaker 4 (13:59):
The sports fan with a bad taste in his mouth.
He just feels like this sucks.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
What? It's so bad.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
And let me tell you something. As bad as I
just want to say, you know, Michigan, they cheated. That's
when they finally won their national championship for the first
time since Morby Dick was a guppy. We know they
cheated after getting beat like a drum forever. by Ohio State.
They finally win. They find out that they're stealing signals
and all that. And then they put on a terrible performance,
(14:34):
lose to Western Michigan.
Speaker 2 (14:36):
Oh, you're just going to say it, huh?
Speaker 4 (14:37):
To me, they lost to Western Michigan. You can say
whatever you want to do. And hopefully they won't win
a game this year. I'm wishful thinking, but you know
what I mean? Like that is such bad mojo.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
You know what I mean?
Speaker 4 (14:52):
Like you wish something bad happens to Michigan at some
point to make up for that.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
Because they put in a piss poor performance. Yes, they did.
Speaker 4 (15:00):
That didn't warrant winning a football game, being bailed out
by the officials. We want to hear from you on
the Dan Patrick Show. It's the Odd Couple, Rob Parker
and Kerry Rhodes. Filling in for Dan and the Danettes,
877-99 on Fox, 877-996-6369 for you laymen out there who
can't figure out the letters and the numbers.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
Where are you on this? I'm done.
Speaker 4 (15:30):
I'm done with instant replay. I just, it kills me.
And it's not a perfect science. We've seen other games
where umpires, referees, and they go to the booth and
they go to New York and they go to New
Jersey and the command center and still it comes back wrong.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
Yes, there is some truth to that, right?
Speaker 4 (15:56):
You want to talk about getting your panties in a
bunch this morning. That is me over this whole thing.
Speaker 5 (16:01):
They really bunched up? They might have to be cut off.
That's how bad it is.
Speaker 4 (16:07):

Want to hear from you.

Lane Kiffin is my hero taking on the establishment. The
kids are already professionals. They get paid. Stop with the nonsense.
Great that the courts are on the side of Lane
Kiffin and the players who want to go back to
go to LSU and whatnot. So we want to hear
from you. Kerry doesn't like it. He thinks they're taking
(18:33):
the spots of the kids.
Speaker 2 (18:34):
Who have already put in the time. That's right. But
you do agree they're professional. I do.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
100%.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
Okay. Yep. We want to hear from you. 877-99 on Fox.
Let's see. We got Randy from Arizona. You're on with
the Dan Patrick show, Ben.
Speaker 9 (18:47):
Hey, guys.
Speaker 12 (18:47):
You know, long-time listener.
Speaker 9 (18:49):
I love your work there, Rob.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
Thank you.
Speaker 9 (18:51):
Good job. Good career, Mr.
Speaker 14 (18:53):
Rhodes.
Speaker 2 (18:54):
Thank you, brother.
Speaker 12 (18:55):
You know, it's all about money. Everything could be tied in.
You said this morning is money. What happens with Western Michigan? No,
you can't say anything because you just made millions off
this game. And there's three other Mac teams that played there.
Speaker 9 (19:07):
They got paid. So shut your mouth.
Speaker 6 (19:08):
Go over there and lay down.
Speaker 12 (19:10):
And that's the answer there. And then with Lane Kippen,
they get a lawyer out of Louisiana that sides with him.
And then the SEC's got a bunch of lawyers with
the SEC in Alabama.
Speaker 9 (19:20):
And they go, no, we're trumping you.
Speaker 12 (19:22):
And if you don't do this, we're going to have
a chat.
Speaker 9 (19:24):
So then he has to sit the guy.
Speaker 12 (19:25):
Everything is based on money. And the bottom line is
the point I want to make is the NCAA needs
to get a real commissioner, make some hard decisions, get
their lawyers together, get the girls' soccer team, the boys'
polo team, and everybody else is going to make decisions
with the money and where it's going to go. And
you've got to make decisions. Don't rely on the federal
(19:46):
government to run your leagues.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
But you know what the problem is?
Speaker 3 (19:50):
Is?
Speaker 4 (19:50):
You're making sense, but it reminds me of, thanks for
the call, it's like boxing. What happened where the boxers
and their TV deals are bigger than They used to
have a boxing commissioner, right? And different boxing... Those are gone.
The NCAA has no power. Whoever has the bigger TV
deal money, they run what's going on. We're going to
start the game then. We're going to play this. And
(20:12):
the NCAA follows along.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
They don't leave. I mean, prime example of that is
Notre Dame. Exactly. Notre Dame is too big and has.
Speaker 4 (20:19):
a fan base and their own TV deal, and they
run and they get to do— they made a deal
where they're in the football playoffs almost no matter what.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
I mean, they don't have to be in a conference.
That's crazy. It's crazy. 877-99 on Fox. Let's see.
Speaker 5 (20:33):
We got Kareem from L.A. You're on with the Dan
Patrick show. I almost said I'd come up with it.
Speaker 3 (20:38):
I know.
Speaker 2 (20:38):
It's hard.
Speaker 9 (20:41):
Hey, how you guys doing, man?
Speaker 14 (20:42):
What's up, Rob?
Speaker 2 (20:43):
Just— Good morning. What's happening? How are you?
Speaker 4 (20:46):
I know it probably sounds weird to hear me this early.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
In the morning.
Speaker 14 (20:51):
Right, right.
Speaker 15 (20:51):
No, we do stand-up together.
Speaker 4 (20:53):
Oh, Kareem, okay, yep. I did when I was doing
my stand-up. I need to get back on there.
Speaker 2 (20:58):
Kareem, yes.
Speaker 15 (20:59):
Yeah, yeah, Rob got some chops.
Speaker 14 (21:01):
And what's up, Kareem, man?
Speaker 15 (21:02):
I don't know if you remember this, but we played
together in a 35-over basketball league. You dunked on Keith Kloss. Wow.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
Hey, keep saying it, though.
Speaker 5 (21:11):
I didn't remember that moment until now, but keep saying it.
Speaker 2 (21:14):
Keep saying it, buddy. Yeah, nah, that.
Speaker 15 (21:15):
Was some of the sickest stuff I ever seen, man.
I just had to call in because you two were
working together, man. You guys have a good one.
Speaker 2 (21:21):
Appreciate it. Thanks, Kareem. No doubt.
Speaker 5 (21:23):
He's funny, too. 877-99 on Fox. We got Willingham from Virginia.
You're on with the odd couple. With the Dan Patrick show.
Speaker 2 (21:31):
Thanks for calling.
Speaker 14 (21:33):
Okay, thanks for taking my call. Hey, Rob, I listen
to you all the time, but I'm going to show
you where you're wrong at.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
Okay.
Speaker 14 (21:39):
You're part right, you're part wrong. Okay, for a guy
to leave college and then go get drafted by the Pope. Okay,
what about if you get drafted to the military and
they decide you don't want to go to the military?
You see, so you'll be wrong for that. You can't say, well,
I got drafted by the Army. I'm not a soldier.
(21:59):
You see what I'm saying? So, like this, a good
friend of mine stood by me and cried, told me
a story, and I knew he hadn't lied. So he
went for a job, and the man said, Dr. Educator
might as well be dead. So why can't they go
back and play football, but they can't go back and
get their grades? Thank you for taking my call.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
All right. Appreciate it. 877-99 on Fox.
Speaker 4 (22:20):
You ain't got nothing for that one, Rob. I don't
have nothing for that one. The latest piece, we heard him.
Speaker 2 (22:27):
There you go. We got an owl from Inglewood. You're
on with the Dan Patrick Show.
Speaker 8 (22:32):
Good morning, gentlemen.
Speaker 3 (22:33):
Rob, you're my hero, bro. I know you're saying Lane
is your hero, but you are my hero. And the
reason why, Rob, is you call it like you see it, bro.
The reality is the reality. Here's my take. Here's my take.
Speaker 2 (22:47):
I appreciate that, to be honest. I really do. Thank you.
Speaker 3 (22:50):
Yes, and that's why I listen to you, man. I
haven't heard your buddy, your partner, and I listen to Danette.
Speaker 8 (22:57):
But listen, Rob.
Speaker 9 (22:59):
Hello?
Speaker 2 (23:00):
Yeah, we're here. Yep, we got you.
Speaker 14 (23:01):
Listen, Rob.
Speaker 3 (23:03):
Man, Lane is doing what Lane needs to do. He
needs to fight the system because kids in college have
been getting nut-screwed.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
No, they have been for a long time.
Speaker 6 (23:14):
For a long time.
Speaker 3 (23:14):
They've been getting screwed. So finally... The NCAA and the
folks are actually allowing the payment of these professional kids.
They should continue to do that.
Speaker 9 (23:28):
Don't stop that.
Speaker 3 (23:29):
Matter of fact, like the guy before me or two
guys before me, they said, let's structure it. Let's get
it all together because they earned it. And the colleges
have been making money off of these kids back then.
Speaker 7 (23:41):
For years.
Speaker 2 (23:42):
And let me say this to you.
Speaker 4 (23:44):
They could have, when this whole NIL thing happened, they
could have taken control of it, made a system, given
players tiers. You're a tier one, a tier two, tier three,
and this is how much money you get rather than
letting it be the wild, wild west. But you know what?
They didn't want to pay the kids, and that's why
(24:05):
you have what you have because they're like, well, let
somebody else pay them. We're not paying them. And so
this is why you have this situation. They could have
had some structure. People probably would have bought into it.
We're now at a point where I believe you've got
to have a union for these players so they could
have a CBA and have their rights protected as a group,
not individually. And then you wouldn't have these court cases
(24:28):
and all this stuff because it would be spelled out.
You know what I mean? And everybody would have to
agree to it in order to play. In this pro league,
it is not amateur sports. Stop thinking this is 1950s
college football.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
Can we stop? It's just not the case. So tired
of hearing this.
Speaker 4 (24:47):
I know George Reister is going to agree with.
Speaker 2 (24:53):
Terry, I think, when we get to this. But let's
welcome him in on the Dan Patrick Show.
Speaker 4 (24:59):
Former NFL tight end and, of course, on three college
football analyst.
Speaker 2 (25:03):
George, what's happening? You're on the Dan Patrick Show, Fox
Sports Radio. What's up, my man?
Speaker 9 (25:07):
Man, what's up, man? It is great to be alive
and it is great that it is college football season.
We had an excellent weekend.
Speaker 2 (25:16):
No, we did not. No, no, no.
Speaker 9 (25:18):
Sorry, sorry. We had some excellent games this weekend on
what was otherwise a pretty, as the kids say, mid-slate.
Speaker 4 (25:28):
So let's just go to the Michigan-Western Michigan. I'm against
a replay now after that debacle. To take a win
away and then all of a sudden, George, you play
college football.
Speaker 2 (25:42):
Kerry played college football. We've all watched it.
Speaker 4 (25:46):
I didn't know there was a secret clock that all
of a sudden they pulled out at the last second
because Western Michigan was going to upset Michigan.
Speaker 8 (25:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
What'd you take away from that?
Speaker 9 (25:57):
The reason why you didn't know that is because none
of us knew that.
Speaker 2 (26:01):
Nobody!
Speaker 9 (26:02):
Nobody knew that there was a secret clock that they keep.
And here's the mystery of it all is... Okay, so
how has this, in the history of Hail Mary, going
out of the back of end zones, out of the
side of end zones, and everything else, why have we
never heard of this?
Speaker 7 (26:21):
Never heard of this?
Speaker 4 (26:22):
I've been covering sports for 40 years, 20 years in
Michigan with Michigan, Michigan State, and games that I cover,
never heard of it.
Speaker 9 (26:30):
And the reason why you haven't heard of it is
because the NFL rule for this is whatever time that
is visible to the public is the clock that they use.
Because they don't want to have any impropriety. So it's like,
that's why they are so.
(26:51):
Dogged about keeping the clock right. They'll be like, oh, hey, hey,
clock operator, can you.
Speaker 2 (26:58):
Change the– Put some seconds on right. They do it.
Speaker 9 (27:01):
It'll be 12.06. And they'll be like, clock operator, please
put 12.08 on the clock. And it doesn't look like
a big deal, but the reality is that they know
whatever people see is the thing that they are going
to trust.
Speaker 4 (27:15):
George, that's the greatest point because– they could easily say,
we don't care what the clock in the stadium, and
the referees could just say, we have the official clock
in my pocket.
Speaker 2 (27:24):
You know what I mean?
Speaker 4 (27:25):
And that's the clock. But they know people are watching.
And people at Michigan knew the game was over. People
at Western Michigan players knew the game was over.
Speaker 2 (27:35):
Everybody did.
Speaker 9 (27:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (27:37):
No, George, I was telling Rob about do you– What
do you think about the tenths of a second being shown?
Would that help in this situation, or does it not
really matter?
Speaker 9 (27:49):
I mean, one second, zero seconds. Football is not a
tenth of a second sport. We're like basketball. You need
a certain number of times.
Speaker 2 (27:59):
To put a shot up, right.
Speaker 9 (28:01):
Yeah, it's either a second or it's not. And the
thing that makes it worse, right, the thing that if
this had happened in Western Michigan's favor– it wouldn't have
been quite as big of a– it would have been
a big deal, but not quite as big. But the
fact that it's Michigan and it's a blue blood and
they just had the Connor Stallions cheating scandal and everybody
(28:23):
knows that they essentially skated Scott free on this.
Speaker 13 (28:27):
Hey, you know what?
Speaker 2 (28:28):
Let me say this, George, real quick. I thought Jim
Harbaugh was coaching yesterday. I'm just saying. It's a cheating.
Don't let him get you.
Speaker 9 (28:35):
The reality is that Jim Harbaugh has skated clean on this.
He's had no repercussions. He's just gone about his way,
won a national championship, gone to the NFL, and then
comes up there with his quirky grass-eating sayings. It's a
great day to be. Who's got it better than us?
Speaker 3 (28:56):
Nobody.
Speaker 9 (28:57):
Yeah, nobody's got it better than Jim Harbaugh at escaping consequences.
Speaker 5 (29:02):
No, George, so I mean, obviously you're an Oregon Duck.
That's who you represent. You represent them loud. They had
a tough game against Boise State this weekend. How did
you view your team right now after week one?
Speaker 9 (29:17):
Oh, I'll do them very good. When you dig down
into the stat, actually you, you don't even have to
take a deep dive. If you just look at the
top of the stats, they allow a 50% passing for
181 yards. They allowed a 36 carries for 93 yards,
which is 2.6 yards per carry.
Speaker 16 (29:31):
It was.
Speaker 9 (29:34):
A halo violation punt I'm sorry, a muff that allowed
them to get a score. The expected game score, and
mind you, I'm not one of these people that's trying
to be like the Cleveland Cavaliers coach. Well, I mean,
(30:00):
if you look at the numbers, we actually won all
of these games. in the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (30:04):
No, no, no.
Speaker 9 (30:05):
But the expected game score was 48 to 14. It
was actually a very dominating win. They didn't get pressure
on the quarterback. Oregon rushed for almost five yards to carry.
The wide receivers running free and open all day. If
you convert a couple of more of those third downs,
where you missed and it wasn't them, or you didn't
(30:27):
break a tackle that was expected to be broken, then
the game looks completely different. So I'm not concerned about
this team at all. And I think that the people
who are, they are ignoring the results because they're looking
at how Ohio State, how they won so dominantly and
(30:48):
all these teams when they were playing non-competitive games.
Speaker 7 (30:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (30:52):
I got a thing for you that everybody needs to do.
Go back to week one of 2025 where we were
all excited. We saw South Carolina beat Virginia Tech up.
We saw Penn State beat Nevada 46-11. They were number
two in the country. And then four weeks later, the
(31:14):
coaches fired. We saw Florida State beat Alabama. And, oh,
my God, Florida State and Mike Norvell are back. And
Alabama stinks. They're going up. They end up in the
college football playoff. Florida won their week one game 55-0.
And we're number 15 in the country. Everybody's like, oh,
(31:34):
my gosh, we're so excited. And look at little old Indiana,
who beat Old Dominion 27 to 14, and they got
run on for like over 200 and some odd yards.
the highest total of the entire season and every, Oh man,
Indiana don't have a, have a shot. They only had
(31:55):
a 13 point victory against, against old dominion. And then
it turns out nobody could beat old. I mean, nobody
could beat Indiana.
Speaker 2 (32:03):
No doubt.
Speaker 4 (32:03):
George Reister joining us here, former NFL tight end and,
of course, on three college football analysts. Should Dabo Sweeney retire?
He's so busy worried about court cases. His team got
blowed out.
Speaker 2 (32:18):
Got blowed out to LSU. What do you make of Clemson?
Speaker 9 (32:23):
That was sad, man. You know, you know, there's a
point where you stop being upset and you start being
sad because I like dabble. So we have had a
chance to go interview him, sit, sit down with him.
He's a man of principle. He's a man of, of
like his graduation rate is over 96%. He, he would
(32:43):
take like so many of his former players are on
his staff. Like he's a man that's about all the
right things.
Speaker 2 (32:49):
Except for winning. Oh, no, I'm sorry.
Speaker 9 (32:51):
That's what I was going to say. But at the
end of the day, you are paid to do those things,
but you also have to win football games. And Dabo
is at the point where he either– it's adapt or
die in terms of the coaching ranks because the old
school ways of I'm not offering guys until they're juniors
(33:12):
and I'm not offering them until they come on campus–
He knows what championship rosters look like, and he knows
that he doesn't have one. And he went into the portal,
got 11 guys. But this starts at a fundamental retooling
of his framework for the new system.
Speaker 2 (33:31):
George, you are spot on.
Speaker 4 (33:34):
And I've seen this where old coaches, they don't adapt.
Speaker 2 (33:39):
And I always say, Coach K, right?
Speaker 6 (33:43):
Mm-hmm.
Speaker 2 (33:44):
Everybody's pushing back on the one and done.
Speaker 4 (33:46):
Coach K dove in because he wasn't going to win
anymore without doing it.
Speaker 2 (33:51):
Yep. Saban did it. You know what? Yes.
Speaker 4 (33:55):
Because you have to adapt or you become a dinosaur.
I always said that at Michigan State with Tom Izzo.
Tom Izzo pushed back on the whole idea and wanted
the guys going to stay for four years and all that.
That's why it's 25 years later, he never won another
national championship. You've got to adapt. You can't be... beholden
to the old way of doing it. And if you can't,
(34:17):
that's why I said earlier on the Odd Couple this week,
if you can't adjust, you should resign and quit if
you don't want to play by the current rules of
the game. And I think you're spot on when it
comes to Dabo Sweeney.
Speaker 5 (34:30):
Yeah, George, before you get out of here, I want
to ask you about the five for five rule and
these NFL guys coming back to college. Yes, I want
honey mustard with my nuggets. What do you feel about
that right now?
Speaker 9 (34:42):
First of all, this is the NCAA's fault. Lane Kiffin
is exploiting the situation, but this is like blaming the
pain from a broken arm as the issue when the
broken arm is the issue. The NCAA caused this. They
(35:03):
put in a rule. And if anybody had been sitting
in the room with with with some common sense, they
would raise their hand and say, hey, yo, that 2022 class,
this is going to be a problem. So we either
need to put this rule in in January instead of
waiting until June to do it because you have so
(35:24):
many kids. And it's not even just NFL. It's not
even just basketball. Football players, it is affected. My son's girlfriend,
think about this. She was an All-American volleyball player at
UC Davis. Four years, four years played. If they put
this rule in in January, she's an All-American now. She
(35:46):
could have hopped in the transfer portal, got a couple
hundred thousand dollars, stayed here in the United States. But instead,
it is a great opportunity. But she's in Japan playing
pro volleyball now, but not for the same amount of money,
not getting her family to see her play and all that.
She could have went to Japan after this year. And
(36:07):
so it's not just those people. It is the fact
that they have put people in such bad situations because
if you did this in January, which you had the
ability to do, but instead you were trying to get
the Protect College Sports Act, which needs to be balled
up and thrown in the trash despite the Nick Saban commercials,
(36:28):
it's gross. and you put kids in such a bad spot,
and then you turn around and try to demonize them. Oh,
my God. Look at these pro players. They're not pro
players yet. They've never played. They haven't made a roster.
Speaker 2 (36:41):
Thank you.
Speaker 4 (36:42):
I said that. I said, just because you go to camp,
you're not an NFL player. Can we stop with that?
You've got to make the team and play in a game.
Speaker 13 (36:50):
Stop it.
Speaker 9 (36:51):
Terry knows.
Speaker 6 (36:52):
I agree.
Speaker 9 (36:53):
How many times have we seen dudes that be like, yo, yo,
I was an NFL player. I went to camp. And
you're like, I mean, no.
Speaker 2 (37:03):
George Weister joining us. Thank you, George. We appreciate the input.
Check him out at George Weister. Right. Appreciate you, George. Yep,
no doubt. All right.
Speaker 4 (37:12):
Coming up on the Dan Patrick Show, the odd couple
filling in. We're going to talk about your alma mater.
Speaker 8 (37:18):
Louisville.
Speaker 15 (37:19):
Louisville.
Speaker 4 (37:20):
We're going to talk about Louisville and much more. It
is the Dan Patrick Show on Labor Day. Rob Parker,
Kerry Rhodes filling in for Dan and the Danettes. And
you know what you need to do. Stick and stay.
Speaker 2 (37:32):
Except Louisville in the Nashville of A.
Speaker 10 (37:38):
Thanks for listening to the Dan Patrick Show podcast. Be
sure to catch us live every weekday morning, 9 until
noon Eastern, 6 to 9 Pacific on Fox Sports Radio.
And you can find us on the iHeartRadio app at
FSR or stream us live on the Peacock app.
Speaker 2 (37:55):
It is the.
Speaker 4 (37:56):
Dan Patrick Show. Rob Parker. Kerry Rhodes filling in for
Dan and the Danettes. Have you ever wiped with a
dry piece of toilet paper and wondered, is this as
good as it gets?
Speaker 2 (38:11):
It's not. That's right.
Speaker 4 (38:12):
Switch to life-saving, wet, extra-large, flushable dude wipes because wetter
just cleans better. No doubt about it. Available at Amazon
and at major retailers nationwide.
Speaker 2 (38:26):
Dude wipes. Best clean. Pants down.
Speaker 4 (38:30):
Adam Kaplan coming up in about eight minutes. Here on
the Dan Patrick Show, we're taking your phone calls. NFL
season's about to kick off.
Speaker 2 (38:37):
Who you got?
Speaker 4 (38:38):
Who you think's getting to the Super Bowl? Who's winning
the Super Bowl? If you've gone that far, where are you?
877-99 on Fox.
Speaker 5 (38:45):
We got some calls, Rob. We're going to see what
the people got to say about the teams. We got
Trevon from New York. You're on with the Dan Patrick Show.
Speaker 2 (38:55):
Trevon. Trevon, you there?
Speaker 7 (38:57):
Yeah, I'm there.
Speaker 2 (38:58):
Okay. What you got?
Speaker 16 (39:00):
So I'll say that the Rams is a good team,
but I'm a Patriots fan. So I think the Patriots
are going to go back to the Super Bowl and
win it. But on the Rams side, they have Trent McDuffie,
Miles Garrett, and Aaron Donald. So that defensive core is
(39:20):
going to be very dangerous in the NFL. But I
think the Patriots are going to win it.
Speaker 2 (39:26):
Okay. Patriots, Homer called. Thank you. They got no shot.
877-99 on Fox. And Jerome from New York, too, talking
about the Patriots. Patriots. Oh, my goodness. Get out of here.
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (39:36):
Like, last year, they didn't beat anybody. Like, that was
the thing. And I'm not knocking them. That was on
the schedule.
Speaker 7 (39:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (39:41):
They beat one team over 500 last year, which is
just crazy. They made it all the way to the
Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (39:46):
Yeah. They got an easy schedule for sure last year.
Let's see.
Speaker 5 (39:49):
We're going to move on from Chip. We got Chip
from Orlando. You're on with the Dan Patrick Show, man.
Speaker 8 (39:54):
Hey, great show, Dan. Keep it up. And two thumbs
up on the dude wipes. Keep that going, too. I
like the Colts.
Speaker 2 (40:02):
Yes, dude wipes. Good, good. Definitely a good thing, no doubt.
Speaker 8 (40:08):
The Colts are just a tremendous value. This is not
a homer pick. I don't think it was a fluke.
They went, what, 8-0, 9-1, and then decimated by injuries.
They might have the best running back in the league,
at least top three. Daniel Jones can.
Speaker 4 (40:21):
Play I'm not convinced he can play I'm not because
I'm going to say this and I'll push back when
they were winning again go look at the schedule when
they started to play some of the better teams Daniel
Jones turned into a pumpkin go look at his numbers.
Speaker 2 (40:38):
And I'm not convinced that he's that.
Speaker 4 (40:40):
Good of a quarterback that we saw at the start
of the season if.
Speaker 2 (40:44):
I'm wrong I'll admit I'm wrong but I'm not a
Daniel Jones.
Speaker 8 (40:48):
Guy I just think the value's there for the Colts.
I think it's a great bet besides all the favorites
that are out there. The kicking game is outstanding. Special teams,
they got the old guy from Notre Dame. He can
flat-out coach special teams.
Speaker 2 (41:05):
So you got them going to the Super Bowl, right?
You got them going to the Super Bowl?
Speaker 8 (41:09):
I think it's, yes. I think it's worth a hundred bucks.
Speaker 9 (41:12):
All right.
Speaker 2 (41:13):
I got you. Thanks for the call. Appreciate it. 877-99
on Fox. Yeah, the Colts are going to finish last
in that division. I got one for you, too. What
do you got? I think the Lions are going to
miss the playoffs again. I said that as well.
Speaker 4 (41:25):
I agree.
Speaker 2 (41:26):
I agree. You got them in last place. I got
them in last place in that division.
Speaker 3 (41:30):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (41:30):
Yeah, it's crazy, right?
Speaker 5 (41:31):
I think Minnesota's going to play a little better. Their
defense is really good.
Speaker 2 (41:35):
Everything's good except the quarterback. Exactly. If they get a
decent quarterback, right?
Speaker 7 (41:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (41:40):
I mean, Chicago, Green Bay, they're going to make it.
Everybody has Chicago going all the way back. I don't
see that. Oh, they're not going all the way. No,
going back. They think they're going to fall like, oh,
that was a fluke. No, they're not going back. No,
they'll make the playoffs as well.
Speaker 3 (41:53):
Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (41:54):
Let's see.
Speaker 5 (41:54):
We got John from Maine. You're on with the Dan
Patrick Show, brother.
Speaker 2 (41:58):
How are you?
Speaker 11 (42:00):
Hey, guys. Just driving up to work, and I just
wanted to say, excuse me if I stumble over this,
but you two make a great team.
Speaker 8 (42:11):
Oh, thanks.
Speaker 11 (42:13):
Kerry, every time I listen to you, you remind me
of my father. He always found the positives in things,
and even if he found the negatives, he always had
things to back it up.
Speaker 2 (42:25):
There you go.
Speaker 9 (42:26):
Thank you.
Speaker 11 (42:28):
You and Rob.
Speaker 2 (42:30):
Yes.
Speaker 11 (42:31):
Rob, you're like me. Excitable and things like that. My
father would always have.
Speaker 9 (42:37):
To reign me in.
Speaker 10 (42:40):
That is.
Speaker 14 (42:40):
There it is.
Speaker 2 (42:41):
That's perfect.
Speaker 4 (42:41):
That is perfect. Who you got for... You got any
Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (42:46):
Ideas or picks?
Speaker 11 (42:48):
I am a Packer fan through and through.
Speaker 9 (42:51):
I was born a Cheez-It.
Speaker 4 (42:52):
And.
Speaker 11 (42:54):
I just don't know what to expect from them. They
can either go north or they can go south in
a hurry. Their team just has to prove that they're
a good team to compete. I think the Rams have
a great shot, but with that talent, they have to
back it up. They have to dominate and prove that
(43:17):
they should win the Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (43:20):
That's my.
Speaker 9 (43:21):
That's all I wanted to say.
Speaker 2 (43:23):
I appreciate that.
Speaker 11 (43:25):
I just want to compliment you guys. Kerry and Rob,
you make a great team together.
Speaker 7 (43:32):
I think you two should.
Speaker 8 (43:34):
Keep together.
Speaker 2 (43:35):
Thank you, buddy. Appreciate that. Thank you, John. Appreciate you, brother. Yeah,
Kelvin don't want to hear that. I'm just saying. Appreciate that. And, yeah,
he's working, too, on this. He is, yeah. Just like us.
Getting up the road. Getting up the road. 877-99 on Fox.
Speaker 4 (43:47):
We're going to squeeze in a couple more before Adam Kaplan.
Speaker 2 (43:50):
Yeah, we'll get in. We'll get in. Jay from Montana.
You're on with the Dan Patrick Show, man. How are you? Jay,
you there? We lost him. All right, let's go.
Speaker 5 (44:01):
Let's move on. We got the next one. We got
Rick from Florida. You're on with the Dan Patrick show, man.
Speaker 2 (44:05):
How are you?
Speaker 6 (44:07):
Hey, good, gentlemen. As much as I hate to agree
with you, I love the Rams. Lifelong Rams fan. I
think what's going to keep them out is their wide
receiver depth.
Speaker 8 (44:17):
They're just too injury prone.
Speaker 7 (44:19):
Probably going to cost them.
Speaker 9 (44:19):
Home field advantage.
Speaker 2 (44:22):
And that was last year. You know that. The home
field advantage is huge.
Speaker 6 (44:26):
Absolutely.
Speaker 9 (44:27):
Yes, absolutely.
Speaker 6 (44:29):
And that's the only thing that didn't address me off-season,
a little more depth of wide receiver, otherwise I'd be
all in for the Rams. So, that being said, as
a long shot, I still like Buffalo to finally come through.
I know everybody probably thinks I'm crazy, but if it's
going to be this year, everybody's.
Speaker 7 (44:45):
Been saying that.
Speaker 6 (44:46):
This should be their year. Thanks for the call, guys.
Speaker 2 (44:49):
Thank you. Appreciate it. One last one. We got one
last one? We got one more.
Speaker 5 (44:52):
Yeah, we got Kelvin from Culver City.
Speaker 2 (44:55):
You're on with the Dan Patrick show. Should be Kevin, right?
It is Kevin. Yep, Kevin. God is good. How you doing, Kev?
All the time. That's right. What's up, Kev? How you doing?
What you doing up early?
Speaker 7 (45:05):
My guy, Rob.
Speaker 14 (45:06):
I got to get on the show.
Speaker 7 (45:07):
Rob's hosting the show.
Speaker 14 (45:09):
My boy, Kerry.
Speaker 2 (45:09):
Yes, sir.
Speaker 14 (45:10):
Come on now.
Speaker 7 (45:11):
Look, here's the thing. I think nobody's talked about this,
the staff. I think the Rams have so much to
do with Sean McVay. Wait a minute.
Speaker 6 (45:17):
Whose phone is that?
Speaker 2 (45:23):
Oh, is it? Okay, go ahead, Kevin.
Speaker 7 (45:25):
You got so much experience on that coaching staff with
Sean McVay, Anais Chalbos, you got my boy Jimmy Lake,
you got the defensive coordinator Chris Shula.
Speaker 2 (45:36):
So why didn't they win last year?
Speaker 9 (45:38):
Well, here's the thing.
Speaker 7 (45:39):
You got so much talent in Miles Garrett and Aaron Donald,
and then the back end. Kerry, you know this better
than anybody. Fred McDuffie, Jalen Watson. You still got Cam
Curl back there, Quinn Lake. And I think when you're
playing a team like Buffalo, possibly in the Super Bowl,
I think Miles Garrett's the difference maker because he's going
to set the edge, and you got Aaron Donald up
the middle.
Speaker 2 (45:59):
Patriots were undefeated, and they didn't win the Super Bowl.
Speaker 9 (46:02):
Exactly.
Speaker 2 (46:03):
But look, look, look. They're young.
Speaker 7 (46:05):
You guys said the Ravens.
Speaker 3 (46:07):
I said the Bills.
Speaker 7 (46:08):
Those both head coaches are young.
Speaker 9 (46:10):
No experience.
Speaker 7 (46:11):
Joe Brady, your boy from the San Diego Chargers, Jesse Minters,
too much. It's not enough experience. So I think the Rams.
With that firepower, the guy said they don't have receiving depth.
They just got 2-2.
Speaker 14 (46:24):
2-2, yeah.
Speaker 7 (46:25):
They got C.J.
Speaker 14 (46:26):
Daniels.
Speaker 7 (46:26):
You got Puka Nakua. Devontae Adams is more battle-tested than anybody.
He's going to be ready.
Speaker 2 (46:31):
Here's my only problem.
Speaker 4 (46:32):
Devontae Adams is 0-5 in NFC Championship games.
Speaker 2 (46:37):
Can you believe that? Is he 0-5?
Speaker 4 (46:38):
He's never– you know, he's been on the doorstep of
getting to the Super Bowl five times. Never got there.
Speaker 8 (46:43):
Ooh.
Speaker 2 (46:45):
Kevin didn't know that. It'll change this year.
Speaker 13 (46:47):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (46:47):
They're getting there, yeah. I'm just saying.
Speaker 10 (46:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (46:50):
All right.
Speaker 2 (46:52):
I'm not buying it. All right, let's get more NFL talk.
Speaker 4 (46:55):
Let's welcome in Adam Kaplan, one of the best in
the business, Fox Sports Radio, NFL insider, Mr.
Speaker 2 (47:02):
Kaplan.
Speaker 4 (47:03):
Good morning on this Labor Day to Dan Patrick show.
Rob Parker, Kerry Rhodes. What's up, buddy?
Speaker 13 (47:08):
Guys, good to talk to you, as we do every week. So,
Here we are, weird, week one in the National Football League.
Our first Wednesday game. How about that?
Speaker 14 (47:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (47:17):
It's always, eventually it'll be every day of the week.
Which is just ridiculous. Makes money.
Speaker 4 (47:23):
Yeah, but sometimes you can overexpose it. I remember Who
Wants to Be a Millionaire was a big hit on television.
Speaker 2 (47:31):
Do you remember? Yeah. We just filmed it, and then
they put it on every night and killed it.
Speaker 12 (47:36):
Killed it.
Speaker 13 (47:38):
Yeah, my late great friend Chris Mortensen and I would
battle over whether the NFL should have a seventh playoff team.
I was against it, but you know what? I think
it's actually worked. As an old school fan and someone
who's covered this business for nearly three decades, actually, I
(47:58):
like it. Now, Rob, you being a baseball guy... When
they started having these wild cards, I was a little skeptical.
Speaker 2 (48:05):
You know what? I was skeptical for sure. But actually,
you know what? I like it.
Speaker 13 (48:09):
I don't know about you guys, but I like it.
Speaker 4 (48:10):
No, it's gotten there. It's grown on me. There's no
doubt about it. I just don't want to get to
the NBA or the NHL where more than half of
the league makes the playoffs. That's where you negate the
regular season. And people go, in the NBA, oh, I
don't have to watch until May or April, right?
Speaker 2 (48:27):
Something like that.
Speaker 13 (48:28):
Kerry, real quick, where are you as a former player on– A,
having a game on Wednesday. I don't know how mentally
that works. And B, what do you think of having
that extra playoff team in each conference?
Speaker 2 (48:39):
I'm just curious.
Speaker 5 (48:40):
Yeah, the extra playoff team is pretty cool. I think
a lot of teams were on the cusp, and it'll
always be somebody on the cuffs outside looking in that
was almost getting in. But when it was six, it
was tough because there were so many good teams that
weren't making it or getting that chance. I remember in
08 when we had Brett Favre and we missed out
by a game. If we get in the playoffs, we
(49:02):
think we have a chance to win. So bringing that
extra team in was pretty cool. But playing on Wednesday,
that's just ridiculous. You can't play games during that time.
Speaker 13 (49:12):
Guys, I can't. I'm okay with Thursday night games. I
really like, now this is a little bit harder for
those of you guys on the West Coast. Coast, but
I love the 9.30 Eastern, 6.30 AM West Coast time
for those international games on Sunday, but Wednesday, I don't
know how it feels. It's weird.
Speaker 4 (49:29):
All it is is they just continue to– they want
to make these games that are normally– like everything be
a national game, which you get more money rather than
it being regional. That's all this is. It's just like, yeah,
if we go do an international game and it's on whatever,
it becomes a national game, not just a regional, and
(49:51):
we can charge– more money.
Speaker 2 (49:53):
All right, let's get into some football.
Speaker 4 (49:54):
The Rams, are they making a mistake by getting off
the plane and going straight to the ballpark?
Speaker 2 (50:00):
I mean, I just don't even.
Speaker 4 (50:01):
I've been to Australia.
Speaker 2 (50:03):
Kerry's been to Australia. Have you been there, Adam? It's
a kick-ass flight.
Speaker 13 (50:07):
My God.
Speaker 10 (50:08):
I know.
Speaker 13 (50:09):
It's a cool country. But my understanding, the Rams do
the study on so-called biorhythms and whether you should get
there late in the week. Some teams, when they travel internationally,
they'll go there for the whole week.
Speaker 9 (50:22):
Right.
Speaker 13 (50:23):
It's what the data shows, and that's my belief based
on what I was told on why they're doing it
the way that they're doing it. But not every team
does it that way. Like, for instance, let's say you're
an East Coast team that's playing the Seahawks.
Speaker 7 (50:35):
Right.
Speaker 13 (50:36):
Some teams want to get there on Friday. They want
to get used to the time difference. Some teams know
we're going to get there Saturday just like we would.
We're not going to adjust to the time difference. It's
whatever you think works for you.
Speaker 4 (50:48):
Yeah, it's going to be interesting there. I want to
ask you about the Ravens and your thoughts on them.
Kerry and I both have them going to the Super Bowl.
Speaker 8 (50:58):
Oh.
Speaker 2 (50:59):
Both of us. We do.
Speaker 4 (51:01):
I just think now that Jim Harbaugh is not there,
they got a good shot. I'm down. John Harbaugh. I
was down on him his last few years. That team
was sloppy.
Speaker 2 (51:10):
Yeah, there were leaks about him, too. Like over-practicing. Right.
Speaker 4 (51:14):
Like there was just something that was wrong because I
used to look at that team and go, how has
this team not gotten there?
Speaker 2 (51:20):
You know what?
Speaker 4 (51:21):
With the players that they had. I remember two years,
was it last year? They went to Buffalo, scored 40
points in week one.
Speaker 2 (51:28):
Do you remember that? That was last year, yeah. And
lost the game. Yeah, yeah. So, I don't know. Where
are you on Baltimore?
Speaker 13 (51:33):
Yeah, I spent a day, I was at their training camp,
and they look so, guys, they look completely different. This
is not your old school Ravens. They are actually going
to throw the football.
Speaker 1 (51:41):
Yep.
Speaker 13 (51:42):
Declan Doyle, their 30-year-old offensive coordinator, He's a Sean Payton disciple.
His first work in the NFL was Sean, and then
he had one year with Ben Johnson last year. As
a non-play-calling OC, this is his first year calling plays.
They're not using a fullback for the first time in
a decade. It's going to look completely different. I like it.
I like what I saw. It looks like it's very
(52:06):
West Coast, this offense. That's the scheme. They've gotten younger
at receiver. Jacoby Lane, their third-round pick out of USC,
had a great camp, by the way. They're very high
on him. I'm excited to see him as well, Adam. Kerry,
he had a great camp. And what I find is
interesting on him is so many teams were split on him.
I had one team, like I spoke to one receiver's coach,
(52:27):
he's one of the best in the National Football League.
He goes, I'm just going to tell you, they didn't
give me our.
Our front office didn't give me tape. They didn't give
me as a, one of the 20 receivers to watch.
I was like, how's that possible? That wasn't a third
round because they didn't like him. I was like, you
got to tell, he's like, and I can't, he's like,
I can't tell you why they didn't like him. Cause
he's not on my list. I didn't see him, but
(52:47):
overall guys, it's going to look different. Um, I've got
them absolutely as my, one of my top seven teams. I,
I do sort of like a top 10 and bottom
10 in the NFL. They are absolutely my top 10.
And I can't wait to see this.
Speaker 9 (53:00):
What?
Speaker 13 (53:01):
Cause I, It's always been conservative. Yes, Derrick Henry's still there.
But I want to see what this young OC brings
to the table.
Speaker 2 (53:08):
Yeah, no, I'm excited.
Speaker 5 (53:09):
I think we both are. I think they're a team
where they're so talented. They've had moments of being there
and being in the mix. But infusing it with some
new life with, you know, with Mentor and those guys,
I think it's going to bode well for Lamar to
actually step into that space and be that guy.
Speaker 4 (53:26):
What about the Patriots and the whole scandal with Vrabel
and Rossini? And I guess ESPN and them did a
story and they made a couple players available to talk
about whether or not he had lost the locker room
and whatnot. Kerry and I just talked about it, and
it's all about winning and losing in this league. If
you win, people can say it's over and you move on.
(53:47):
If they don't win, then they'll wonder if there's been
some damage done.
Speaker 2 (53:51):
Adam, where are you?
Speaker 13 (53:52):
All right, so this is what I know from someone
close to the Patriots. So there was a concern early
on when all that stuff came out that, as the
one person told me, that he would lose his stinger.
That means his ability to get on the players, as
you brought up. And there was a question. This person
was very honest with me that, you know, Mike has
(54:12):
just got to be himself. He can't worry about other stuff,
and he's got to get, you know, he sought the
help that he needed.
Speaker 2 (54:17):
Right.
Speaker 13 (54:19):
And this person said after about three weeks, you wouldn't
even know anything that happened off the field on that
story that came out. And obviously, we don't need to
go over it again. But he's got it. And he's
a very interesting guy. He coaches really hard. Like, he's
on his players. But they know he loves them. And
I know that they think their roster is way better
than last season. But the thing is, their schedule's way harder,
(54:41):
and we need to acknowledge that. It's way harder.
Speaker 2 (54:43):
Last year, they only beat one team that had over
500 rackers.
Speaker 13 (54:46):
Rob, look at this first four weeks. Yeah, the first
four weeks. Of course, Wednesday at Seattle. Hope against the Steelers,
who are one of my top six teams in the
National Football League. I'm probably... The minority, but I love them.
Speaker 2 (54:58):
No, I'm with you on them.
Speaker 13 (54:59):
At Jacksonville and at Buffalo. Good luck finding a win there.
Speaker 2 (55:01):
Right. You might be on four to start after going
to the Super Bowl.
Speaker 9 (55:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (55:06):
I mean, they're not going on four, but they're not
going to be four, no. And it's going to be
an uphill battle for them for sure. I think they're
going to take a step back.
Speaker 2 (55:12):
Kerry and I agree on one thing. I wonder where
you are on this.
Speaker 7 (55:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (55:15):
Kerry and I both have the Lions not making the playoffs. Oh, yeah.
I don't have them either. Oh, wow.
Speaker 13 (55:20):
Guys, I just taped a show.
Speaker 2 (55:22):
People in Detroit, they just turned the radio off. I
just did.
Speaker 13 (55:26):
I'm just going to tell you because it's going to
come out tomorrow. I did a show, an NFL show
about an hour ago, and I don't have the Lions
or Packers making the playoffs.
Speaker 6 (55:36):
Wow.
Speaker 13 (55:36):
I might be the minority.
Speaker 16 (55:37):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (55:37):
You slid the Packers in there too, Adam?
Speaker 13 (55:39):
Yeah, they're not in. I don't have them in because, man,
Josh Jacobs' situation.
Speaker 8 (55:43):
Yep.
Speaker 13 (55:44):
And then obviously Parsons not being available early on.
Speaker 2 (55:46):
When is Parsons going to be available? Yeah, we don't
know exactly. We don't even know.
Speaker 13 (55:49):
We don't know. No, he's out for the first four
games by rule. He's got to be. That concerns me.
Caleb Johnson, in my reporting I put out last week,
Steelers probably would have cut him. But yet he might
wind up starting for the Packers at running back. So
they got some issues, guys. This is not– everybody's on
them every year and they underachieve in the playoffs. And
(56:09):
then Matt LaFleur is not a good playoff coach. Guy's
a good coach.
Speaker 2 (56:13):
He's won. No, I'm with you.
Speaker 13 (56:14):
I don't have him in the playoffs, guys.
Speaker 2 (56:16):
I'm with you.
Speaker 4 (56:17):
Like, seriously, even— I can go back to that ill-fated kick
the field goal and not let Aaron Rodgers try to— like,
you can never live that down for me.
Speaker 2 (56:26):
I'm sorry.
Speaker 4 (56:27):
I'd rather Aaron Rodgers throw a pick or an incomplete
pass and whatever, and Tom Brady has to start at
the one-yard line.
Speaker 3 (56:34):
Of course.
Speaker 4 (56:34):
Or whatever it was, but ain't no way you could.
Speaker 2 (56:37):
Are you kidding me? Yeah, that was a bad one. No,
that was crazy.
Speaker 5 (56:40):
Adam, you don't have the Packers in your top seven,
so I'm intrigued at who you got making the playoffs
out of that NFC right now.
Speaker 13 (56:49):
All right, so my NFC playoff teams would be the Cowboys,
the Eagles, the Bears are going to win the NFC North.
Speaker 2 (56:55):
Okay.
Speaker 13 (56:57):
Whoever wins the NFC South.
Speaker 2 (56:59):
Whoever wins it. Not Atlanta?
Speaker 7 (57:02):
No. No.
Speaker 13 (57:04):
The Rams, the Bucs is who I have. The Rams,
the Niners, and the Seahawks. There's my seven.
Speaker 2 (57:10):
You got the Niners getting in.
Speaker 8 (57:11):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (57:12):
I know.
Speaker 2 (57:12):
That's the one. That's the one.
Speaker 13 (57:14):
You know, it took me like five minutes because I
take the stuff. I had to do an hour show earlier.
And I have to explain it. It's really tough because
I just, I don't see Minnesota at all with the
quarterback situation. But the Lions, they were my breakout team
four years ago. I was down on them last season.
They still have not got it right on defense in
the secondary. Too many injuries. Lost Tarion Arnold. They got
(57:36):
forced to cut. They didn't trust him. They have pass
rush issues. They got one guy could rush the passer,
the great Hutchinson. And they got corner problems, and their
safety should come back from injuries.
Speaker 2 (57:48):
That's right.
Speaker 13 (57:49):
Too many problems to overcome, guys.
Speaker 2 (57:50):
Yeah. Justin Herbert. Can he win a playoff game? I know, man.
He's gotten the biggest pass in the NFL.
Speaker 13 (58:00):
I don't disagree.
Speaker 2 (58:01):
People love him.
Speaker 4 (58:03):
Size, arm strength, all those things they love about him,
but he hasn't, and I don't know what the numbers are,
post-season numbers, but if I touched him, I'd have to
wash my hands because they haven't been good at him,
and at some point.
Speaker 2 (58:18):
Don't laugh. We're going to come up with that one.
Did you write that down? That was off the cusp. Sometimes,
you have to start winning, right?
Speaker 13 (58:28):
Well, they got the O.C. Mike McDaniel's brilliant. I mean, I...
And the thing that's interesting about Justin Herbert, guys, is
he was not a good processor when he came out
of Oregon. He was a see it, throw it, hold
the ball, hold the ball and throw a fastball. He
processes better. I just like this offense, the way they're
going to scheme it up. They're going to be a
good team. They kind of overachieved on defense. And remember now,
(58:49):
let's not forget Jesse Minter is no longer there. They
got a new defensive coordinator in Chris O'Leary. Um, They're
going to be around nine or ten wins. I put
them in the playoffs because, guys, I'm probably the only
person who covers the NFL that does not have the
Chiefs in the playoffs.
Speaker 6 (59:07):
I don't.
Speaker 4 (59:08):
I did it last year when it wasn't. Remember, I
called it last year. I haven't gotten my choices down yet, Adam,
but I might be with you.
Speaker 3 (59:16):
I really.
Speaker 2 (59:17):
I don't see it.
Speaker 13 (59:17):
And I do radio in Kansas City every Thursday, and
I'm going to get bleeped on Thursday when I.
Speaker 2 (59:21):
Tell them this. That's okay.
Speaker 4 (59:22):
People were mad at me last year that I was
just a hater and this and that.
Speaker 2 (59:27):
That's right.
Speaker 4 (59:28):
And you might be on to something. All right, Adam Kaplan,
can't wait. Football season, of course, we'll be chiming in
with you.
Speaker 2 (59:34):
Thanks for joining us. Thanks, guys. See you. No doubt.
All right, we're going to wrap this bad boy up.
I can't believe it. Kerry, what happened? I don't know.
I didn't even get to eat my second piece of
chicken yet. You had one and a half. I know.
I need another one.
Speaker 4 (59:45):
It was close.
Speaker 2 (59:47):
Unbelievable. All right, we'll do that.
Speaker 4 (59:48):
We'll talk more NFL as the season is about to
kick off this week. It is the Dan Patrick Show.
Odd Couple coming up tonight, 7 to 10 Eastern. Don't
forget to join us there or here on Fox Sports Radio.
Rob Parker, Kerry Rhodes, and you. And you know what
you need to do. Stick and stay America.
