You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
We did it. We made it to a Friday. It's
a meat Friday at that And in case you're wondering
National Cuban Sandwich Day, you have the Cubano sandwiches and
waffle fries. Who has it better than we do? No? No,
let's try that again. Cubano sandwiches waffle fries. Who has
it better than we do?

Speaker 3 (00:25):
No?

Speaker 4 (00:26):
Lie?

Speaker 5 (00:27):
Okay, well, I mean, but better to be fair that
Cubans get to eat cubanos every day.

Speaker 6 (00:33):
They are they just call them sandwiches.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
They just it's just.

Speaker 5 (00:35):
It's just just a sandwich there. So it's like, hey,
you want to go get a sandwich again. We've had
this every day for the past ten years, all right?

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Sure, So do they celebrate when they get another sandwich,
Like if they get a BLT, it's like, oh my god,
we get a BLT today, we have to have another
Cuban sandwich. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
All right.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Welcome to the program. It's our one stat of the day,
brought to you by Patini America, the official trading cards
of the program. Weird is Good. It's the new shirt
for you charge your fans well really it can be
for anybody, but it's available Danpatrick dot com and as
Jim Harbaugh has told us, ready to help you attack
the day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. Weird is good.

(01:15):
Go to danpatrick dot com, Play the day, stat of
the Day, poll question, all of that forthcoming and the
looming question. Does your preseason record matter if you're a
Chicago Bear fan? All great times you played four games,
your four to zero, you've scored one hundred and fifteen
points the opposition forty seven. Does it correlate to anything

(01:39):
during the regular season? We'll explore that coming up. Last
call for preseason games. You've got a couple tonight, Jags, Falcons, Dolphins,
Tampa Bay Niners and the Raiders. And then college football
this weekend Week zero Florida State and Georgia Tech in Dublin.
Isn't it weird? We're starting a season with the great

(02:00):
college coach of all time and the greatest NFL coach
of all time, and they're members of the media. Nick
Saban will be in Dublin for that game, I believe,
with a college game Day. And then you got Bill Belichick,
who's on three or four of these NFL shows now,
but they're on the outside looking in. We know Belichick
wants to get back in. Nick Saban is a member

(02:22):
of the media and probably that's what he's going to
be the rest of his career. But Bill Belichick, Bill Belichick,
I still feel like is breaking down film just in
case somebody goes, hey, we're going to make a change
in Philadelphia or Dallas. Bill, are you ready? And he'll
be ready to go. I wonder if he has language
in his contracts with all of these members of the

(02:43):
media media outlets. Pat McAfee show, Hey, here's my out.
If I happen to get a job offer, then I'm
going to take it. I can get out of these contracts.
I'd be curious about that. All right, we will have
our play of the day, poll question stat of the day, Say,
good morning. If you're watching on ecock, thank you for
downloading the app our radio affiliates around the country as well.

(03:05):
Good buddy of the show. Joey Vado just announced his
retirement and we'll talk to him about what is next.
He has some interesting numbers and numbers that will probably
leave these Hall of Fame voters with a interesting question
is Joey Vado, a Hall of Famer. Frank Calliendo will
join us. Been a while since we've talked to him.

(03:26):
We didn't think about him because the Nicholas Cage portrayal
of John Madden the movie is going to be in
I guess production coming up, and Frank of course does
his John Madden impersonation, so we thought maybe we could
get Frank on does he do a Nicholas Cage version
of John Madden impersonation? Eight seven seven three DP show

Colts Bears win their preseason games in a full slate
coming up this weekend. I do have odds to win
the Heisman Trophy, and this might be a season where
you go off the board because we've seen that it's
rare when the favorite wins the Heisman Trophy. According to DraftKings,

(04:12):
the best odds to win the Heisman Trophy is Dylan Gabriel.
Dylan Gabriel. How long has Dylan Gabriel been in college football?

Speaker 3 (04:24):
Is he? Is?

Speaker 2 (04:26):
He a five year guy? Feels like he's.

Speaker 6 (04:30):
Let me ask his kids as kids, how old he's
twenty three? Hilter twenty four this season. That's not so bad.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
Okay, all right, So Dylan Gabriel, followed by Georgia's Carson
Beck quinn Ewers at Texas, Jackson Dart what a great name. Uh,
he's next, and then Jaln Milroe at Alabama. Those are
the odds on favorite for the Heisman. Not a lot
of fanfare for these names. Where you know it was

(04:57):
Caleb Williams a foregone conclusion. You don't have that this year,
and you might have somebody off the board who wins
the Heisman this year?

Speaker 7 (05:05):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (05:06):
Seeton, what's pole question for at least the first hour
of this program.

Speaker 5 (05:09):
It's funny too, because you're talking about I was just
looking at one of those like preseason uh like lists
about college football predictions and stuff like, oh, that could
be like a fun segment to do or something. So
I started going over and had Heisman odds or whatever,
and then I'm looking at favorite to win Big Ten
championship and Oregon there, what.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
Well that that'll Yes, it's still weird to see it,
but it's weird. That'll help your that'll help your Heisman
odds if you happen to win the Big Ten. But yeah,
it's like uh oh yeah Oregon. Yeah, still gonna take
a little while for that one.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (05:42):
See yeah, it was just so strange to see. And me,
I'm always like I second guess everything. I'm like, what
this has to be a typo or.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
So let me triple check this is that right? Oregon?

Speaker 5 (05:53):
Big ten? Anyway, Uh I had for a pole question. Well,
you hit it there a little bit, and how much
does your preseason record matter? A little or a lot?
There's got to be some kind of data to show
how UH teams performed only after doing.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
Only is of holding data? Poly is holding said data. Yeah,
so I've wondered this before.

Speaker 6 (06:18):
I think the remember when the Detroit Lions were zero
to sixteen, they were undefeated in that preseason.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
So it does it? Does it correlate?

Speaker 6 (06:26):
So of the last twenty nine NFL teams that went
undefeated in the preseason, do you think it's more likely
that they made the playoffs or.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Missed the playoffs?

Speaker 6 (06:35):
What do you guys think teams that went undefeated? You're correct,
thirty sixty of the last twenty nine teams that went
undefeated the preseason did not make the playoffs. Only thirty
five percent did, and on the opposite side of it.
There have been twenty eight teams that went winless in
the preseason in the past ten years. Forty three percent

(06:57):
of those went on to make the playoffs. Fifty seven
percent missed it. So the worse you do in the
preseason record wise, the better your chance is to make
the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
That's a step, yeah, but it feels like if I'm
a coach and maybe I'm taking over a bad team,
I want them to know what it feels like to win.
Get that feeling, no matter even if it's a preseason game,
so you try harder. It's like the worse you are,
the harder you try in preseason. At least, that's always
the feeling I get. I don't know if Kansas City

(07:27):
Chiefs go, man, we're going to be terrible this year,
or you know, I'm looking at some of these other teams.
So the Bears are undefeated, the Vikings are undefeated as well.
Now this is going into games this weekend. Packers are
won to one, so the teams in the division and
the lines are one in one. I don't know if
any of that matters. I think it's more of did

(07:50):
we see something we didn't expect? Did everybody stay healthy?
And then you know, cause some coaches believe in that
final preseason game you're going to play, you're going to
play your starters, want them to get a taste of it.
I don't know the philosophy anymore. It feels like it's
you know, team by team, coach by coach. But you know,
it used to be that last preseason game you probably

(08:11):
played your starters a long time ago because you wanted
to get ready for that regular season. And I always
go back to the Patriots when Belichick and Brady were there,
they would say the following after preseason they would struggle,
it felt like in September, and they'd say, September is
our preseason. That's how good they were that they they

(08:32):
used the first three or four games of the regular
season as their preseason for their starters. And we know
how it usually ended up for them. Any other teams
in there. So most recently you have the undefeated Chicago Bears,
and you had the Lions who went undefeated. But then
we're zero to sixteen. Any other interesting anomalies there? Something

(08:54):
stand out?

Speaker 6 (08:55):
Yeah, a couple years ago, well, last year, the Steelers
were three and zero in the preseason. They did make
the playoffs. Okay, last year the Jaguars and Commanders were
both three and o in the preseason.

Speaker 5 (09:06):
They missed it.

Speaker 6 (09:07):
If you go back a few years ago, the twenty
twenty three Rams, they were zero to three in the preseason.
Everyone wrote them off because of the previous year. They
ended up making the playoffs last year. So those are
a few anomally.

Speaker 5 (09:42):
Pullage just sent one in here. Better quarterback named bo
Nick Jackson, Dart. We can put other in there too,
We could. We have room for two more names, but
those right there current quarterbacks pretty.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
Good, isn't their General Booty?

Speaker 6 (09:58):
Is that a good one?

Speaker 2 (10:00):
How was that his name? General, General Booty, General, generally Booty. Yeah,
wait is that his name, General Booty?

Speaker 6 (10:10):
Yes, it's his Well, he was born major Booty, and
that of course he went up the food change.

Speaker 2 (10:14):
He's a major booty. I would keep when you keep
major booty instead of general booty.

Speaker 6 (10:23):
Yeah, general booty, that's his uh General Axel booty. He
played at Oklahoma few years ago and ul Monroe.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
Yeah, but wasn't he John David Booty's son? Or there
are a few booties who've played played college football? Yeah,
there are. Yeah, how's his booty? It's general.

Speaker 6 (10:44):
But I guess what we're saying with this this question
is if you were doing like one of those WB
shows about a high school quarterback, would you go with
a name like Jackson Darter bow Nicks.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
I like Jackson Dirt, I like that, or on a
utah but uh, Jackson dartists that's pretty good. It just
feels like you you better be good with he. Oh,
he's Jackson Dart through a dart Dylan Gabriel. Okay, yeah,

(11:17):
I'm sure there are a few. Oh do you see
the story about Alabama's accused of stealing the kicker from
Miami of Ohio. Uh, here's the head coach of Miami
of Ohio, Chuck Martin.

Speaker 7 (11:31):
All right, special teams lost your kicker, Carter, He's we
didn't lose him, he's at Alabama. We know exactly where
he's at. Again, you mediate people, it's all pretend like, no,
Alabama stole our kicker illegally, they illegally recruited artist, they
illegally recruit our kicker and stole them from us, and
like that's that's a fact. But that's that's cow. But
we act like it's not. We live in this la

(11:52):
la world, like, hey, let's not talk. I don't know
why he knows what's going on. So, yeah, Alabama stallar kicker.
A couple of a couple of other schools try to
steal it, but they think, Okay, what's the question.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
Okay, So that's Chuck Martin. At Miami of Ohio football
social media, Caitlin de Boor, Alabama's new head coach, was
asked about allegedly stealing Miami of Ohio's kicker.

Speaker 3 (12:18):
The Miami of Ohio coach guys of camp.

Speaker 2 (12:23):
Said he ever wants to I don't know anything about that.
I guess that comment. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (12:30):
I mean he entered the portal and we reached.

Speaker 2 (12:33):
Out to him. So that's how it goes, right, So
we did everything that you're supposed to do. Okay, Wait
a minute. Was it in that order that it happened.
He entered the transferred portal and then we reached down
to him, or we reached down to him, and then
he entered at the transfer port A big different coach
with that. I mean, I'm not accusing anybody. Here's the thing.

(12:56):
College football has gotten to the point where I don't
know if you can say you stole somebody, you did
something illegally. I just saw this story where there was
somebody on Dion's staff at Colorado. He went to Saudi
Arabia and he connected with the Public Investment Fund which
established Live Golf, and I think they owned the Premier

(13:20):
League's Newcastle Club, and he was going over there trying
to solicit funds for Colorado football. At first when I
saw and I go, this can't be real, but it
is real. He said that he was reaching out to
a collective and they're Wall Street people, He said, they

(13:43):
don't know football. Football is a different language. All of
you out there who played college football are been around
at big time fans. You know that the language and
the way that people operate in the commitments and the time,
it's just a different animal. You don't go home at
five o'clock. We were on Saturdays and Sunday. So the
special teams coordinator, Trevor Riley has been dismissed from the

(14:08):
Colorado football program. Would he have been dismissed if he
actually got money from the saudis probably not well, but
if that got out, But he told Sports Illustrated that
that was the case, that he spent his own money
to go to Saudi Arabia and Jordan to be not
Michael Jordan, Jordan to try to get money for the

(14:29):
Colorado Buffalos. So you can't sit here and go, wow,
they stole our kicker. I have no sympathy for any
of these coaches anymore. It's just it's you know, ready,
fire aim. This is what college football is all about, survival,
whatever it takes. Yeah, now we're bribing now it's legal

(14:50):
to bribe these players. Where it used to be you know,
you were doing everything kind of surreptitiously. Yes, Paulie.

Speaker 6 (14:57):
College football right now is like a small town with
no st lights, no speed limits, and the police department
has not never opened. That's a state of college football
right now. It's like open season, no rules.

Speaker 2 (15:08):
Yeah, yeah, I'm Marvin.

Speaker 8 (15:10):
If you're a coach of a mid major program, the
worst thing ever is for one of your players to
be first team All American. Like no, no, no, don't
be that good. Don't be that good. If I'm at
Eastern Michigan or Bowling Green. Oh, he's first team All American.
It was fun while it lasted because he's gone.

Speaker 2 (15:25):
These coaches yeah, and these recruiters from these major programs,
they just they're just trolling. They're just like waiting, just waiting,
just waiting. Oh how about that guy. Oh he was
All MAC first first team. Uh, he's not gonna be
All MAC the following season because he might be All s SEC.
That's what happens. It's like when Alabama was going after

(15:47):
Jamiir Gibbs at Georgia Tech, Like, you know, this is
Georgia Tech and okay, not a great, you know, big
time program. But Alabama's like, man, this Gibbs guy's pretty good.
And I had heard from a scout who's, hey, Alabama's
going to get the best running back in football and
they're going to get him from Georgia Tech. And I go, huh,

(16:07):
he said, yes, Jamiir Gibbs who's now with the Lions,
And my source said they're going to get him, and
he's one of the better kept secrets. I'm like, well,
and then we saw what happened at Alabama. Yes, Seton, is.

Speaker 5 (16:22):
There any pride to be taken?

Speaker 2 (16:24):
Though?

Speaker 5 (16:26):
If you're Miami Ohio and you're like, you know what
our recruiting really is that good?

Speaker 3 (16:29):
Though?

Speaker 5 (16:29):
Alabama steeling our guys. We know we're doing something right.

Speaker 2 (16:33):
Well, those programs have to recruit really well because they
can't rely on we'll just outspend anybody. I mean, we're
Miami Ohio.

Speaker 5 (16:42):
Get that he speaks for itself.

Speaker 2 (16:46):
Well, they do have to fight that they are you
the you. No we're not, but we're the original Miami University.
But we're Miami of Ohio. Yes, Sedon, Hey Ohio, we've
got great football. Okay, you come play for us?

Speaker 9 (17:02):
Really?

Speaker 5 (17:03):
Ohiostaton, Well no, Miami Ohio.

Speaker 3 (17:05):

Speaker 2 (18:08):
We'll settle on a poll question today at least for
hour one. Phone calls coming up a little bit later
on Frank Caliendo and former baseball player Joey Vado watched
a little bit of pre season action last night. Anthony
Richardson had a pass that resulted in a pick six
in kirk krb Street was all over Anthony Richardson, the

(18:29):
second year pro out of Florida, plays for the Colts.
I don't know if it was necessarily his fault A
lot of times and we've tried to bring up the
stat here like receiver caused interception. What was did we
have rcis that we were calling this the receiver caused
the interception? And it felt like that last night with

(18:52):
Anthony Richardson. He threw a pick six and Herbie was like,
oh my gosh, you know Joe Flacco could come in
and replace him, which I yes he could. It just
felt like it was so it was so obvious that
there was a mistake made, whether the quarterback thought the
receiver was going one way or you know, vice versa.
But the pick six there, and you're trying to pick

(19:14):
up things now. He is great at running the football.
I don't know if that's what I want to say
about my quarterback. You know what he does really well?
He runs, Okay, Michael Vick ran really really well. I
wanted him to be a really good passer as well.
Lamar Jackson is I think developing into a dangerous passer.

(19:35):
Pretty good passer. I don't want you running RG three
great runner. I don't want you running. I want you
running when you can. I don't want when you're forced
to run. So watching last night just I mean, Anthony
Richardson is freakish. He's unique. He's one of those he's
like a Cam Newton feel because he's so big and

(19:56):
you're just waiting to see. And I think the Colts
are a sneaky team. And I mean even last year,
you know, they carved out a pretty good season with
you know, had injuries. Richardson got hurt early, Jonathan Taylor
got hurt as well, and that's in a division that
might be up for grabs, and they're you know what,
talking to two people yesterday who are professional gamblers, they

(20:21):
are fading. Okay, I'm gonna I'll ask you, guys, the
team that these two professional gamblers are fading this season, Paully,
I'll start with you. The Philadelphia Eagles. Okay, no, they
have them. I think winning the NFC Todd these professional gamblers,

(20:45):
they are fading this team, respected team. I think they're.

Speaker 5 (20:48):
Concerned about the Buffalo Bills.

Speaker 2 (20:50):
Buffalo Bills, no seat O'Connor, the Ravens, no Marvin, the
Houston Texans. Yes, it is the Houston Texans because of
the schedule that they have. They have a really, really
tough schedule. They benefited from an easier schedule the previous year.

(21:12):
Now I'm with them. I don't think the Texans are
going to be that Super Bowl contender. I just think
so much fanfare, so much expectation, and the quarterbacks that
they're going to face. You know, they're facing top ten quarterbacks.
It feels like almost week in and week out, and
I think, yes, Eton and.

Speaker 5 (21:31):
Anthony Richardson have a good preseason, though I don't know.

Speaker 2 (21:36):
I don't know what they would consider a He stayed
healthy and he is kind of unique. When I watch
him play. He might have those games where you go eh,
or he might have those games where you go, oh, yes,
well yeah.

Speaker 5 (21:51):
It's like drive by drive, right he has first drive
is a touchdown, second drive and pick six.

Speaker 2 (21:55):
Dang.

Speaker 5 (21:56):
But his you know, as we're talking about preseasons mattering
there are you know, the Bears go four and oh
and you're like, Caleb, Heck, yeah, all right, that's great.
Anthony Richardson, You're like, I don't know, it feels like
his is being weighed a little more because I don't know,
is that individual performance, is it.

Speaker 2 (22:15):
Yeah, And it's weird how you want to use it
either to strengthen your argument or weaken somebody's argument, because
you're going, Eh, it doesn't matter what brock Purty does
in the preseason. Okay, did you see you know whoever?
And you're like, wait a minute, it doesn't matter in
the preseason. Well, for certain quarterbacks it does. There's certain
teams it does, other teams it doesn't. I don't know

(22:37):
if anybody cares what the Kansas City Chiefs did in preseason.
I don't know if it matters to anybody or should
matter to anybody.

Speaker 5 (22:45):
Yes, right, are we Are we really saying that brock
Purty hasn't proven himself? I mean that's what that if
you're if you're looking at a preseason performance for him,
you're like, what see, we really still have question marks
on if that kid can play or not.

Speaker 11 (22:59):
That's that's what that says. Yes, we pick and choose,
We pick and choose. Yes, Paul, I think this is
also about football coverage. It's August and you need something
to cover. There's not a lot of transactions in August.
There's hopefully not a lot of injuries in August. So
the preseason performances is the fodder for the media, and
I think it's bigger on the local level, Like in
Chicago right now, going four and o in the preseason,

(23:21):
the media there is.

Speaker 6 (23:22):
Like, it really can't get any better than this. As calm,
as you try to be, an objective as you try
to be it's hard to in the moment, but then
you get bitten. Every year you fall in love a
preseason and then in November you're like, preseason had nothing
to do with what happened during this season.

Speaker 2 (23:37):
Chicago should be a good team this year. I'm not saying,
you know, I have them as a playoff team, but
I don't look at them as a dangerous team right now.
I'd look at there, there's like the top tier in
the NFC. You got Philadelphia and you got San Francisco.
Now you might put green Bay in there. I don't
know if you put Dallas in there. I mean, there's

(23:58):
a couple of outliers there, but for the most part,
you're looking at two teams and then there's that next level,
and green Bay might be in that next level. I
don't know if Chicago can get in there. Detroit is
going to be in there. They're probably there with Philadelphia
and San Francisco. Based off what happened last year, Green
Bay went toe to toe during the postseason, big win

(24:19):
in Dallas. So I think sometimes you look at these
teams and you go, it doesn't matter if you don't
play well. And then the teams that aren't very good,
we get excited because they do play well. Eight seven

keeper's heart last night, had a cigar. Kind of nice
quiet night, very quiet in Maine during the evening, very quiet.
So just sipping, socializing this only I can with nature.
The loons, The loons are loud. You know what they are, Todd?

(25:52):
Not the balloons. Balloons, balloons Dominus. Yes, the movie on
Golden Pond. Todd thought they were called the balloons. I've
watched the clip many times. I don't see balloons anywhere.

Speaker 13 (26:04):
I don't stay watching it.

Speaker 4 (26:05):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (26:06):
No. And then those guys are loud out on the lake.
They are loud, yes, PAULI.

Speaker 6 (26:10):
You ever been by a fire pit and you think
there's birds overhead and it's dusk, and all of a
sudden you see it's a bunch of bats. Because bats
move differently and sound differently, people freak out about bats.
I'm not anti bat or pro bat, but like people
freak out when they see bats.

Speaker 2 (26:25):
Isn't there a place in Austin, Texas that has a
bridge or an underpulse that is full of bats and.

Speaker 6 (26:33):
They like fly around at different times of the day
and like masses.

Speaker 2 (26:37):
I think people just they it's a tourist site that
they go to this, I don't know. Is it a
bad cave? Is I don't know, yes, Todd.

Speaker 7 (26:50):
Is it scary that they can't see or that they
can see, like are they gonna be coming after you?

Speaker 2 (26:54):
Or they just may accidentally crash into your face? I
have an encounter to bat.

Speaker 7 (27:02):
I have not ether, but I wonder if it's scarier
that they can't see or that they are able to see,
and maybe they would avoid.

Speaker 6 (27:06):
I don't buy that whole bat blindness thing. That's a
total setup. So we underestimate them.

Speaker 2 (27:12):
Well, you would get the year as blind as a bat, Yes,
that would be the expression. But I yeah, I think
there's a underpass in Austin, Texas where it's just full
of bats and then people show up at night with
flashlights and they get to see these bats were in
doublet oh Okay, bats in the Belfry Thank you, thank you, Todd. Yeah,

(27:33):
see Belfry Bridge.

Speaker 5 (27:35):
The bats are awesome because if you have them in
your yard, they eat all the mosquitos. So that's why
I like you put like a bathouse in your backyard.
And if you have a pool or something like that,
you put a couple of bathhouses in your backyard and
the bats fly around back there. They take care of
the mosquitos for you.

Speaker 2 (27:56):
Can you have a bat pet.

Speaker 6 (27:59):
No, but you could build, like in your neighborhood a
bath house. It's like a big it's probably like five
by five little wooden structure, looks like a doghouse in
the air, and they hang out up there. But like
you said, they do take care of the mosquitoes.

Speaker 2 (28:11):
Yes, Todd. And do they really sleep upside down?

Speaker 3 (28:13):
Is that a thing?

Speaker 8 (28:14):
Because like, if we did that as humans, we get
like a major headqu blood to be rushing to your head.

Speaker 2 (28:18):
You know, we couldn't do that. But that's don't have
blood rush to their head and get a headache from
sleeping upside down.

Speaker 5 (28:22):
It's an amazing thing about nature.

Speaker 2 (28:24):
Todd, Yes, that's wild.

Speaker 5 (28:26):
Have you ever seen a bat they do sleep upside down?
Have you ever seen a bat urinate?

Speaker 8 (28:30):
I have not.

Speaker 5 (28:31):
It's an amazing thing. They actually were hanging upside down.
They flip around still holding themselves, take a whiz, flip
right back up. One of the more amazing things you
could see.

Speaker 2 (28:41):
We should try that true story. We have. We have
a hard enough time just going you know, the conventional,
conventional way I can get in that position.

Speaker 13 (28:54):
I try it.

Speaker 2 (28:54):
I guess once it's the same.

Speaker 9 (28:57):
All right.

Speaker 2 (28:57):
So it was a year ago we were in Dublin,
Navy and Notre Dame, and there was something you know
that it was unique with Notre Dame because probably ninety
percent of the people who were there, the fans who
were there, were Notre Dame related. You know, Navy did
show a little bit, but it was about Notre Dame.
It was about Dublin and it was magical. I mean,
it was different Florida State and Georgia Tech. It doesn't

(29:21):
exactly cry out for wow, Dublin Notre Dame. It was
a party that entire week and Will Ferrell once again
spending his own money to come over and spend time
with us for a few few days there, and he
had fun. And then when he saw Brady Quinn and
he used to yell at Brady Quinn when Brady was

(29:41):
at Notre Dame. He would yell from the sidelines at
a USC game, hey, number ten, your pants are too high.
Because Brady pulled his pants up too high, and so
Will had the chance to say it to Brady Quinn
in front of him, and then they started wrestling. It
was It was a lot of fun. Weather was great,
game wasn't great, but still being able to see Notre

(30:04):
Dame in Navy in Dublin, yes, Paulie.

Speaker 6 (30:06):
But by the end of the week, the amount of
Notre Dame fans in the streets was really overwhelming in
a good way. It's like it was like a pilgrimage
for Notre Dame fans to do this. If you've never
been to Ireland. The one thing about Will Ferrell is
we've been around quite a few famous people. I mean
we have because of this show. He can't hide. He's
a good six four six ' five, very recognizable. When
we were just walking down the streets, it felt like

(30:28):
a movie scene where people were almost like chasing him
down the street or running down the street, and he
makes time for everybody. He'll give you a high five,
a quick picture, a moment. But it was like walking
with a globally famous person was different.

Speaker 2 (30:42):
But the thing I thought was really interesting and I
gave Will a little grief. Brian Nation, who's the master
distiller at Keeper's Heart. He was walking with us one
night and the number of people in Dublin where they
do like their whiskey, they came out and they saw
that Brian Nation would there and it was like they

(31:03):
just couldn't, like they wanted him to come in and
into their bar. And he's a legend over there. And
I said to Will, I said, you're not the biggest
name here in Dublin now. And he realized that because
they were like coming out of the streets like Brian
Nation's here. Did you see Brian Nations here? I'm like,
Will Farrell's right there, I know, but that's Brian Nation,

(31:23):
the master distiller, yes hee.

Speaker 5 (31:26):
It's like the patron saint of a temple bar or something,
you know, like that's the lee Brian Nation.

Speaker 2 (31:32):
Oh my gosh. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (31:33):
The Will Farrell thing was crazy because you could turn
onto a street there and you could see almost like
this ripple effect of people finding out Will Farrell was
at the corner, you know, and you could see like
five feet ahead and ten and twenty then one hundred
feet down the road people turning and being like.

Speaker 2 (31:49):
Well and slowly walking towards him. Crazy, crazy generous with
his time generous because he flew over and then he
had to fly back. He goes, I gotta go back
for Friday. It's my dad's birthday. And I'm like, oh
my god. And then I felt I said, if you
need to leave, when you need to leave, like you know,
and he said, all right, but when I get there,

(32:11):
I'm a dan At. Okay, that's all I want to be.
I want to be a Danete And I go, I
think I can pull that off. So he said, whatever
you guys are up for, I'm gonna do. And then
you know, if we're doing shots, he's doing shots, smoking
cigar like whatever it was. He was like, okay, I'm in.
I said, all right, I'm gonna treat you like a
dan aute. Yes, Paul, my absolute favorite thing. We were

(32:33):
doing a little pub crawl. We're going from pub to
pub and it was like six in the evening.

Speaker 6 (32:36):
There's families out, there's people out, and every once in
a while, like a seven year old would run up
to Will and for them, that's Buddy from Elf.

Speaker 2 (32:43):
That's Buddy the Elf.

Speaker 6 (32:44):
That's not Will Ferrell because the hair looks the same,
and they're like they run up and they go.

Speaker 2 (32:48):
Buddy, buddy. He like, hi, kid, Buddy's gotta go.

Speaker 6 (32:51):
Here's a high five. And then but he would say,
Buddy's got to run off with his buddies.

Speaker 2 (32:56):
We were at a dinner. We were at a big
d in her and there was a little girl who
came in and she started crying, like, like full on crying.
She saw Will. She put her hands over her face
and she couldn't believe that she was seeing Buddy. And
Will realized that this this little girl was so emotional

(33:21):
and he handled it brilliantly. But oh my god, when
she came in and she's just crying and I'm like, wait,
what happened? And then she said buddy, buddy, and then
he got up. He goes, come here, come here. I'm
like wow. That was an impact round of applause for
for Will Ferrell. There what a waver a goo.

Speaker 12 (33:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (33:43):
When he had them thrown out, though, it was like
that was yeah, that was weird.

Speaker 2 (33:47):
That was weird again.

Speaker 5 (33:50):
Come here, yeah, come on, come on, Yeah, Buddy's going
to show you where the door is. Come on now,
get out. Thanks, that wasn't necessary.

Speaker 2 (34:00):
Let's take a break. Got our play of the day
coming up next.

Speaker 1 (34:04):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio wapp Oh my god,
Play of the day.

Speaker 2 (34:18):
My God, this is the play of the day.

Speaker 1 (34:24):
Check this out.

Speaker 13 (34:25):
And the pitch swang in a fly ball? Did tall
the right field line. Brennan's only gonna watch, dude. It
is gone on to the porch. Haard Judge.

Speaker 5 (34:35):
He strikes again as.

Speaker 13 (34:37):
He turns up the slug in the fourth Oh bron
number forty eight.

Speaker 2 (34:43):
That's courtesy of the Yankees Radio Network. Aaron Judge is
homered in three straight games. He's on a pace to
finish with sixty one home runs. Now you start to
look at this and the other players in baseball history
who had at least forty eight forty nine home runs
through one hundred and twenty eight games. Sammy Sosa did

(35:04):
it three times and Mark McGuire did it three times.
So they did it under suspicious means. There's no cloud
of controversy, there's no questions, there's no I don't know
with Aaron Judge that he's doing it legitimately. So the
third player with at least forty eight home runs through
one hundred and twenty eight games in multiple seasons. That's

(35:24):
your play of the day, brought to you by King Sawaiian.
They want you to slide into a slider Sunday. Do
it your way with family and friends and Sunday Slider Sunday,
King Sawaiian. A couple of phone calls in here. Let's
start out with Mitch in South Carolina. Good morning, Mitch.
What's on your mind today?

Speaker 3 (35:45):
Hey?

Speaker 12 (35:46):
Dan?

Speaker 4 (35:47):
Five eleven?

Speaker 3 (35:51):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (35:51):
Yeah, I was just calling the way in on the
Bears going four and oh into preseason. I was guess
I was wondering if we could get the I team
on how many rookie quarterbacks have had a winning season
after going four and oh in the preseason, because we
see we see a bunch of teams do good in
the preseason and then tank the regular season.

Speaker 2 (36:14):
All right, PAULI, do you have stats on that?

Speaker 6 (36:16):
I'd have to check.

Speaker 2 (36:17):
That's a deep cut, okay. Uh? Luke and Charlotte, Hey Luke,
what's on your mind today?

Speaker 14 (36:25):
Hey guys, how you doing? I just wanted to recommend
you for an absolute amazing week of August late August
sports content, Uh, regardless.

Speaker 3 (36:36):
Of any.

Speaker 14 (36:38):
Lack of actual sports conversation going on. I've been very
entertained all week and only something only you guys could
pull off. So that's why I love you guys.

Speaker 2 (36:48):
Well, thank you, Luke. I appreciate that. Yeah, what's weird
this time of the year? And uh, look, there are
shows that are trying to create something, and if it's there,
then we bring it to you. But I'm not going
out of my way to say Aaron Rodgers didn't play
in the final preseason game or should he play. I
don't care. And if you do, then you'll probably watch

(37:09):
these other shows. If CD LAMB is close to a contract, great,
but it's not something that I want to hit you
over the head with every day. And look, there might
be other things that we talk about. Maybe you're not interested.
Maybe Napoleon Dynamite, John Heater yesterday, maybe you weren't. But
some of the other things we're having fun manly a
state that just happened because I happened to be in

(37:30):
Maine this week. But for the most part, we try
to give you things that we're interested in and hopefully
as the result, you're interested as well. Andy in California,
High Indy, what's on your mind today?

Speaker 3 (37:43):
What WDB first time longtime, six foot a hard one
seventy five? Thank you? I got a blast from a
past three of your question for EDP and on an
upcoming football season? What current starting NFL quarterback? Appeared in
season one of the Netflix hit Last Chance You?

Speaker 2 (38:06):
He is going to be the starting quarterback for the
Raiders this year.

Speaker 14 (38:11):
How did you know that?

Speaker 3 (38:14):
Well done, Gardner, then shifts well played. In twenty fifteen,
he played for the Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers. They
covered only one loss that year to the MTC Twos
went on to win the national championship only due to
e MTCD and disqualified for the infamous fight.

Speaker 2 (38:33):
Thank you, Andy, Thank you. Uh Chris in Texas, Good morning, Chris.
What's on your mind?

Speaker 12 (38:40):
What m DP?

Speaker 2 (38:41):
Hey ben.

Speaker 12 (38:43):
Six to one soft to fifteen.

Speaker 3 (38:48):
Soft.

Speaker 12 (38:51):
A shout out to the Bernie Little League boys playing
in their US championship this Sunday Must Watch TV. Also
on Sunday is a Greg Maddox documentary on MLB Network
Must Watch. I don't know if you've seen the clips

(39:11):
of him going back with Barry Bond just about how
what a chess game?

Speaker 6 (39:15):
It was.

Speaker 12 (39:17):
Pretty awesome. Story. I would be quick with this one.
On a baseball trip with my dad back in the
day and we were going to Wrigley to see the
Braves play. There was a snow out game, like in
March or April. Weird. They played a double header and
the game that we were able to see on our
baseball trip was Greg Maddox's seventy eight pitch masterpiece in

(39:39):
Wrigley Field. Random, how we did it? Awesome, something you'll
never forget. But anyways, boys, love your show. Thanks for
having me.

Speaker 2 (39:47):
Thank you, Chris. Was it seventy eight pitches for Greg
Maddix for a complete game? And I remember Maddox telling
me one time, and he wasn't real forthcoming with the medium.
He didn't enjoy it. He kind of did it when
he had to do it. But I remember that he
said his philosophy wasn't to strike people out. He wanted
you to get yourself out. He would throw pitches that

(40:10):
he thought you would hit, but you would be hitting
it to a brave infielder or outfielder. And it was
just it was kind of a different approach. He wasn't
trying to embarrass the batter. He just wanted to be
economical efficient, and he was. And Maddox would talk about
like Tony Gwinn. The Braves pitching staff talked about Tony

(40:31):
Gwinn as if he was, you know, from a different planet.
They were like, you just couldn't get him out. No
matter what you did, you couldn't get him out. And
they also talked about with Bonds, he was waiting for
one pitch and that was it. It's almost like that
fish that's, you know, swimming and all of a sudden,
all right, you're throwing your line out, throwing your line out,

(40:53):
throwing your line out, and you keep doing it, and
all of a sudden, the fish waits until he sees
something he really likes, and that was Bonds. Bonds was
going to hit that and he was going to take it.
And that's what Maddox loved. He loved the thinking aspect
of the game. But that'll be coming up MLB Network
on Sunday Night. Coming up next hour, Frank Caliendo, late

(41:16):
weekend of college football, but it's still college football, last
weekend of NFL preseason games as well, and we'll talk
to Joey Vado announced his retirement this week Hour two
on this Meet Friday coming up

Are You A Charlotte?

In 1997, actress Kristin Davis’ life was forever changed when she took on the role of Charlotte York in Sex and the City. As we watched Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte navigate relationships in NYC, the show helped push once unacceptable conversation topics out of the shadows and altered the narrative around women and sex. We all saw ourselves in them as they searched for fulfillment in life, sex and friendships. Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today. "Are you a Charlotte?" is much more than just rewatching this beloved show, it brings the past and the present together as we talk with heart, humor and of course some optimism.
