Rob Parker & Kerry Rhodes are in for Dan and the Danette's on a Labor Day edition of The Dan Patrick Show. The guys are furious about Michigan's Hail Mary, to which Rob says it's time to abolish instant replay. A mob of callers chime in on the game and if Rob is correct that replay needs to go. They wrap the hour with a conversation about the chances this year for Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, and Justin Herbert.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Welcome in. Good morning. Is it Labor Day? Labor Day.
It is Labor Day.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
And this is the Dan Patrick Show.

Speaker 4 (00:15):
Rob Parker with former All-Pro safety, of course, Kerry Rhodes,
who we normally would do the odd couple.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
That's right.

Speaker 4 (00:22):
Kerry fill in for Kelvin Washington. And we're sitting in
for Dan and the Danettes.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
And man... Can the rain stop here in Los Angeles? No,
keep it going. It like rained all day yesterday. Keep
it going a little bit, Rob. It's been hot.

Speaker 4 (00:38):
It's been hot out here. I was like, my goodness gracious. Man,
we got a great show for you today. A lot
of stuff to get to. Of course, it's a holiday,
and of course, I'm working. You know what I mean?
That's what I do. It seems like I do that
with you. I'm kind of like, I might be the
new Rob Parker when it.

Speaker 5 (00:52):
Comes to that.

Speaker 4 (00:53):
There you go. Nothing wrong with that, right? Get there,
get it done. And remember, you can watch us. Live
on YouTube right now. Just search Odd Couple FSR on YouTube.
Hit that subscribe button. And after that, after you're done,
you can tap the icon, the thumbs up icon, I
should say.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Comment away. Let us know if.

Speaker 4 (01:15):
You agree with me or Carrie and go check out
the YouTube channel right now. We appreciate everybody. Just search
Odd Couple FSR and subscribe. Appreciate everyone because people have...
Subscribe to the Odd Couple YouTube channel. It continues to grow,
and we're very, very happy about that. A lot to
get into, especially, oh, my God, college football, Michigan, all that.

(01:38):
We're going to do that.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
But I guess you could say a little breaking news.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
Tua has been named the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Where are you on that? Are you overly surprised?

Speaker 3 (01:50):
I'm not.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Not surprised at all.

Speaker 6 (01:51):
I mean, he's going to be the best player that
they have in this situation to get it done.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Penix hasn't had a lot of time this camp. He's
been injured.

Speaker 6 (01:59):
And for me, this whole thing with Tua and the Falcons, man,
it was a couple years ago when he got hurt
and he kept getting the concussion stuff, and I was
literally scared for him. I wanted him to retire, Rob.
The fact that he came back and had a terrible
year last year with Miami, it didn't seem right at
all for him last year. It seems like he was
trying to overcompensate for Some of the talk that people

(02:21):
have been talking about throughout the years.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
But it's crazy. This is a guy who put up
a 70 piece.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
You know what I'm like? And that's what I'm saying.
So for me in this situation.

Speaker 4 (02:28):
And some of his numbers two years ago, he had
some of the best numbers in the NFL.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
He did, Rob. As a quarterback.

Speaker 6 (02:34):
That's why with this team, they have everything else. And
that's the crazy part. Like you can't pick anybody in
the South to win it really. But I think Atlanta
has the most talent. And if he can just go
out there and play like like tour like we know
then i think that team can be good man so
it's up it sucks it's a good call but it's
one of those things where come on man they gotta
get together.

Speaker 4 (02:54):
And as far as panics i think at some point
the falcons gonna have to cut their panics out i
mean appendix out.

Speaker 6 (03:01):
Here you go you starting early you're gonna go that
way early okay what you got they need to cut
it they need to cut it.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
Out they absolutely at some point i don't know appendix
I've seen flashes, but, I mean, Penix, if he's that guy,
should have beat out Tua.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
You know what I mean? Like, he's the guy that
was drafted there. He's the guy.

Speaker 4 (03:20):
All the signs are that they're not happy with him, right?
If you're Penix, I don't know how you feel anything
other than, you know, they really don't believe in me.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
No, they can't.

Speaker 4 (03:29):
Right?

Speaker 6 (03:29):
He just hasn't had enough time to be healthy either.
And that's been his track record already. I mean, Rob,
he had multiple injuries in college where we saw flashes,
but we never seen enough from him.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
No doubt. But the big story. Oh, my God.

Speaker 4 (03:42):
Wake the kids. Call the neighbors. The Michigan Western Michigan.
Because that's what it was.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
It was as bad as it gets.

Speaker 4 (03:53):
It was so bad, so crooked, I had to make sure,
I thought at least, that Jim Harbaugh was still coaching. Because,
of course, there was cheating involved, and Michigan was involved.
So I just figured, Jim Harbaugh, is he still coach?
I thought he went to the Chargers.

Speaker 6 (04:08):
Don't be giving no residual effects of this stuff to
Harbaugh right now.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Get him on.

Speaker 4 (04:12):
Cheating is cheating, and Michigan always seems to be on this.
I'm going to say this character. It's moments like this
where I think we should abolish instant replay. Because instant replay,
to me, sure, you want to get calls right, right?

(04:35):
But when a call is, when you take away something
from I think it hurts even more. And that's what
I felt like. I don't want to hear about there's
another clock. Like I've watched football my whole life. What
other clock.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
Is there, right?

Speaker 4 (04:53):
Shouldn't that be there's a game clock. There's a clock
in the stadium. That's not the game clock. Like NBC
flashed a cup, you know, final. 12-7, Western Michigan.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
I turned it off.

Speaker 4 (05:07):
Of course you did. And Michigan fans, disgraceful. You're going
to run out on the field after you play Western.
What were they, 40-point favorites? 27.

Speaker 5 (05:22):
27? 28, 27, yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
27-point favorites?

Speaker 4 (05:28):
And rush the field and make it like, oh, my God,
look at what we just did. What an embarrassing performance
by Michigan.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
It was a terrible performance by Michigan.

Speaker 7 (05:38):
Right?

Speaker 6 (05:39):
And, Rob, the thing about that team, we know that
Bryce Underwood was one of the biggest recruits ever coming
into Michigan.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
Had a lot of hype.

Speaker 6 (05:48):
And it was a former All-Pro safety that went to
their camp this offseason, Rob. Eric Weddle, he went to
their camp, and he left, and he said, that quarterback
isn't as good as people are saying. And then he
comes out against Western Michigan and plays the way he played.
That doesn't bode well for them, and especially, I mean,
how much money they paid the kids. So they're going
to have to regroup. Terrible look. Western Michigan almost got

(06:12):
the upset. Should have probably got the upset. No, stop
saying probably should have. They got the upset. They got
the upset.

Speaker 4 (06:21):
I've seen the angles. I've seen the replay. And I
saw the clock go to zero, zero. And this other
idea that, oh, no, but that's not the clock. There's
another second on there. So what they say, tenths of
a second? Because it wasn't a second. It's unbelievable that
this is where we are. You know what it reminds
me of?

Speaker 7 (06:40):
What?

Speaker 4 (06:40):
It reminds me of instant replay when guys steal bases
in baseball.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
So they hold the tag on the runner.

Speaker 4 (06:50):
They watch the replay, and he comes up a millisecond
in the slide.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
He beat the ball there. He beat the tag.

Speaker 4 (06:58):
The guy holds the tag on him, and at some point,
his foot comes a little bit off the bag during
the slide.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
They have to slow it down so slow to see.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
That is not what instant replay is for. It's for
missing obvious calls. They said college football back. That's not
what you want. That's not. You feel like you got cheated.
You had to take a shower after that game and
go like, what did I just watch?

Speaker 2 (07:26):
A little cigarette or something as well?

Speaker 4 (07:27):
Hey, I'm sure Michigan fans had a cigarette and baby oil,
you know, feeling good after they just, you know, didn't
have their season wrecked in week one against, right?

Speaker 2 (07:40):
Yeah. Western Michigan, come on. Yeah, no, Rob.

Speaker 6 (07:46):
I'm not going to say you don't need instant replay.
I'm not on that bad way.

Speaker 2 (07:50):
I'm down. I'm down on instant replay. You're down on it.
If you continue to do this, which is take away moments, seriously.
That's true. Okay, as a sports fan, dude, are you perfect?

Speaker 1 (08:02):
No.

Speaker 4 (08:03):
Nobody's perfect. Why are we looking for this perfection moment?
In sports. It doesn't make sense. And every time, because
humans are involved, guess what happens?

Speaker 2 (08:15):
There are mistakes. You watch the NFL every week.

Speaker 3 (08:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
There's a hole. There's a play. Every week. I agree
with that. So what are we doing? You're not... You're
not fixing it.

Speaker 4 (08:27):
If you told me it was foolproof and you got
every call that was wrong right and you didn't blow
any calls the other way, then maybe I would sign up.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
Okay.

Speaker 4 (08:37):
I was okay. Yes, you could point to maybe two
or three calls. You've watched a million games. Yes, there's
a couple games where you go, ah, they blew it
or that. But for the most part.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
For the most part, it's not an issue.

Speaker 4 (08:53):
Even with the pitch, the ABS system in baseball, umpires
are nailing it or killing it. Do you know that
as far as their rate of getting the calls right?

Speaker 3 (09:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
And the ones that they miss.

Speaker 4 (09:06):
are just a little bit outside or a little bit high.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
It's unbelievable how good they are.

Speaker 4 (09:14):
To me, it has reinforced how good Major League umpires are.

Speaker 8 (09:18):
Really?

Speaker 2 (09:18):
And there are bad ones. Don't get me wrong.

Speaker 9 (09:20):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
There's some bad ones.

Speaker 4 (09:22):
But go look. Go look at the percentage. It's really
high on how many calls they get right. And my
point is, we don't need replay. If you're going to pull...
two victories away and you're going to get it wrong
from human error anyway.

Speaker 2 (09:41):
I don't even, I'm down on replays.

Speaker 4 (09:43):
That has soured me and I've seen other, as I say,
every Sunday you watch NFL football as the season's about
to kick off and I shake my head all the
time because they don't get the calls right.

Speaker 6 (09:56):
Yeah, no, it's going to be hard. And you said,
you hit something right there with the human error part.
There is a human element to sports that there was.
I guess there's like it felt more natural in that way, Rob.
But if you're talking about wanting to get things right,
and I think that's the part now, when you start
adding gambling and all these things to the equation.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
Like, you have to get it right. I don't care. No, no,
I hear you, but you have to get it right.
But they don't get it right, is what I'm saying.
You know how many people had— But who said they
didn't get it right?

Speaker 6 (10:26):
You're just saying you didn't see the extra clock or whatever,
but you can't just.

Speaker 4 (10:30):
Say— And he didn't touch the ball when the clock— Okay,
and now you're going to tell me, no, there's a
double clock in the back that we keep that's different,
and the referees knew that that clock had less than
a second on it.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
Yeah, we had an expert come on.

Speaker 6 (10:48):
Was it Mike Pereira that came on and said they
shouldn't have used the other clock as well?

Speaker 2 (10:52):
Did you see that yet? Yeah, he said they shouldn't have.
He said they shouldn't have.

Speaker 3 (10:55):
Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
This is what I'm talking about.

Speaker 4 (10:59):
In that situation, you got to understand the circumstance and
the idea that... Here's my point. A guy makes a
big error, he should just... make the play, and the
game should be over. Nobody goes, come on, man, he
would have made that play 99 out of 100. That

(11:21):
guy's out. Just call him out and the game's over.

Speaker 5 (11:23):
No!

Speaker 4 (11:24):
Because that's the human element that's a part of the game.
Just like fans have gotten calls go their way sometimes,
fans have gotten calls to go the opposite way, where
you're pissed. And you know sometimes as a fan, you
got a call, your team got a call.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
And you're like.

Speaker 4 (11:41):
Dude, we've been getting jobbed all the time. I'll take
this one, right?

Speaker 2 (11:45):
Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 4 (11:45):
They owe us one from three years ago on that play.
All I'm saying is I've soured on instant replay. That,
when you take the fans' joy away from watching something,
and now every time, you know how many people had
the money line on Western Michigan?

Speaker 2 (12:03):
You know what I mean? Like, they did. They're like, yeah,
they'll get hammered or whatever or whatever.

Speaker 4 (12:08):
Or the plus 27, which they would have won anyway.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
But you know what I mean? They had a bet
or something.

Speaker 8 (12:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
And you see something and go, what? They cheated for
Michigan again?

Speaker 4 (12:20):
That's what people walked away with, feeling like they cheated
for Michigan.

Speaker 10 (12:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (12:26):
No, Rob, literally, I turned it off. When they threw
the Hail Mary, out of bounds, I was like, oh,
that game's over. There's no time left. I turned it off.
I get in the group. I see the group chat.
The group chat coming in.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
It wasn't even in the end zone.

Speaker 6 (12:39):
It was in the end zone. But what they said, Rob,
this is the explanation, though. So this is what they said.
So the guy was already out of bounds. So as
soon as he touched the ball, even at that one second,
you see that. That's when the ball was dead. You
see the ball touching the ground, one, zero, it's over.
But he was already out of bounds. And when he
touched it, that was the explanation. So when they get

(13:01):
the explanation, it's right.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
It's right.

Speaker 6 (13:04):
And so when you say the replay didn't work out,
it worked out. If he was out of bounds, that
was no judgment.

Speaker 4 (13:10):
But I'm saying it didn't work out because you can't
have two clocks.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
Seriously. You can't.

Speaker 4 (13:20):
In today's technology, you can't sync up the clocks? It
doesn't even make sense. Why are people in the stadium
watching one clock?

Speaker 2 (13:28):
That's right.

Speaker 4 (13:29):
And then NBC's broadcasting the game, they put final 12
to 7, Western Michigan.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
Yeah. That's what I'm trying to say to you.

Speaker 4 (13:37):
So if NBC and the people doing the broadcast— Nobody
on the board, I've been listening, nobody said, oh, wait
a minute, we need to check the other clock.

Speaker 9 (13:48):
Nope.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
Because nobody knew there was another clock. Did you know
there was another clock yesterday? No. From the game?

Speaker 7 (13:54):
No.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
This is what I'm saying.

Speaker 4 (13:56):
So it leaves the sports fan with a bad taste
in his mouth.

Speaker 2 (14:02):
He just feels like, this sucks.

Speaker 7 (14:04):
What?

Speaker 2 (14:05):
You're right.

Speaker 4 (14:09):
It's so bad. And let me tell you something. As
bad as I just want to say, you know, Michigan,
they cheated. That's when they finally won their national championship
for the first time since Morby Dick was a guppy.
We know they cheated after getting beat like a drum
forever by Ohio State.

Speaker 2 (14:26):
They finally win.

Speaker 4 (14:26):
They find out that they're stealing signals and all that.
And then they put on a terrible performance, lose to
Western Michigan. Oh, you're just going to say it, huh?
To me, they lost to Western Michigan. You can say
whatever you want to do. And hopefully they won't win
a game this year. I'm wishful thinking, but you know

(14:47):
what I mean? Like, that is such bad mojo.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
You know what I mean?

Speaker 4 (14:52):
Like, you wish something bad happens to Michigan at some
point to make.

Speaker 2 (14:56):
Up for that. Because they put in a piss-poor performance. Yes,
they did.

Speaker 4 (15:00):
That didn't warrant winning a football game, being bailed out
by the officials. We want to hear from you on
the Dan Patrick Show. It's the Odd Couple, Rob Parker
and Kerry Rhodes. Filling in for Dan and the Danettes,
877-99 on Fox, 877-996-6369 for you laymen out there who
can't figure out the letters.

Speaker 2 (15:19):
And the numbers.

Speaker 4 (15:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (15:28):
Where are you on this? I'm done.

Speaker 4 (15:30):
I'm done with instant replay. I just, it kills me.
And it's not a perfect science. We've seen other games
where umpires, referees, and they go to the booth and
they go to New York and they go to New
Jersey and the command center and still it comes back wrong.

Speaker 2 (15:52):
Yes, there is some truth to that, right?

Speaker 4 (15:56):
You want to talk about getting your panties in a
bunch this morning. That is me over this whole thing.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
They really bunched up? They might have to be cut off.
That's how bad it is.

Speaker 4 (16:07):
877-99 on Fox. We want to hear from you. Remember,

Speaker 2 (18:07):
Been here a decade, huh? Crazy. I can't even believe it.
Came here December 2nd, 2016.

Speaker 4 (18:12):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
Really?

Speaker 8 (18:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (18:15):
Coming up on 10 years exactly. Oh, wow.

Speaker 5 (18:17):
All right.

Speaker 4 (18:18):
We're talking about the Michigan, Western Michigan debacle, because that's
what I call it.

Speaker 2 (18:23):
I'm down on instant replay. I'm sorry. I'm through with it.

Speaker 4 (18:27):
That really, I've seen so many calls that just, even
with the human element, were not perfect. I'm okay if
a call is blown, but not. where you're taking away
a game from kids, man. That was hard to watch.
That was brutal. Those kids were crushed. Yeah, they were
crushed for sure.

Speaker 2 (18:45):
Go ahead, Rob. 877-99 on Fox. We want to hear
from you here on the Dan Patrick Show.

Speaker 6 (18:49):
Yeah, we got a few callers. We got a few
callers in this morning. We got Jay from Kentucky. You're
on with the Dan Patrick Show.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
Hey, guys.

Speaker 9 (18:57):
Proud member of the Odd Mob here.

Speaker 3 (18:59):
My man.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
We appreciate that, Jay. What's up, man?

Speaker 9 (19:03):
Well, I Googled it just to make sure my information
was correct. I think it was 1998. Benny Testaverde scored
a rushing touchdown, and it pretty obviously didn't cross the plane. So, like,
I'm cool with them using replay for clear and obvious stuff.
But when they start counting blades of grass, you know,

(19:25):
I think they're taking it a little too far. But, yeah,
I mean, I feel like there should be some kind
of timer when the ref goes under the hood. They
should have, like, one minute to look at it. If
it's not clear and obvious to the naked eye, then
they've got to move on.

Speaker 2 (19:42):
See, I agree with that.

Speaker 4 (19:44):
I think whenever I'm even watching a baseball game and
it takes eight minutes, then the call shouldn't be over.

Speaker 3 (19:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (19:50):
Like, if it takes you that long to try to,
it should be obvious. You watch it and go, his
foot wasn't on the bag.

Speaker 2 (19:56):
Boom, boom. Just change it and move on.

Speaker 3 (19:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (19:58):
Those are the things we need to do. I agree.

Speaker 6 (20:00):
877- Thanks for the call, Jay. 877-99 on Fox. Let's see,
we got another one. We got Brian from Tampa. You're
on with the Dan Patrick Show.

Speaker 7 (20:11):
I'm totally agreeing with you, and I don't think it
had nothing to do with instant replay. It was those
two guys up in there, that booth that had a
clock that no one else had, and they decided, well,
we can't let this happen. We got to take this game.
We got to change this. And I'm hoping that this
isn't over. I'm hoping by Thursday they come back and

(20:32):
give that game to that team.

Speaker 2 (20:34):
Good luck. You know that ain't happening.

Speaker 7 (20:36):
Hey, we're in the 20th century. I never say never.
You never know what happened. Because they blatantly took that game,
and you're kind of with it. How much money you
want on it? Because you're kind of all right with it.
You ain't really against it.

Speaker 2 (20:51):
How much you want? Keep talking about Kerry because you
know I'm hot about it. Brian, I ain't winning no money.

Speaker 7 (20:58):
But I don't pick you out. He's actually kind of low.
I don't pick you out.

Speaker 4 (21:03):
But as a fan watching the game, you just feel like,
what did I just watch?

Speaker 2 (21:08):
What was that?

Speaker 7 (21:09):
It is what it is. They cheated. And I've been
saying this ever since I was in my early 20s,
that these referees and those people that's up in those
booths and I got all this money, they cheated. mess
with the game. And now it's getting clear. Every year
it's getting more and more clear. This ain't nothing new.

(21:29):
They've been just like the Verde Manuel catch, but kept
us out of the Super Bowl. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
that Verde Manuel, that was a catch. But you're going
to come back after the Super Bowl. Oh, we're sorry
we made a mistake. After the Super Bowl.

Speaker 4 (21:42):
Here we go. We got clock gate. That's what we're
dealing with now, clock gate. We got spy gate, deflate gate.

Speaker 2 (21:49):
Brian was hot, man. He was hot. Clock gate at Michigan,
no doubt about it. Clock gate at Michigan.

Speaker 6 (21:56):
All right, let's see what the next caller say. I
think the next caller is going to be me, Rob,
on this one. We got Curtis from Ohio. You're on
with the Dan Patrick Show.

Speaker 9 (22:04):
Good morning, guys.

Speaker 2 (22:05):
Good morning. How are you, Curtis?

Speaker 11 (22:08):
I'm good.

Speaker 9 (22:08):
I'm driving my semi, actually, so I am working today.

Speaker 2 (22:12):
All right. Hey, we appreciate you. You know what? We
appreciate you working.

Speaker 9 (22:16):
Yeah, thanks.

Speaker 3 (22:17):
So my take is– The game is the time of
the game, and it was synced up with the television
and the stadium. A little bit of research I did
after the game tells me that I had clarity overnight.

Speaker 8 (22:34):
To think about it.

Speaker 10 (22:35):
And if in the moment, and take this as a
learning lesson, if that head coach for Western Michigan chose
not to line back up for the play that actually
became a touchdown, would they have just.

Speaker 8 (22:51):
quote-unquote forfeited.

Speaker 2 (22:52):
Yeah, they would have. They would have, and you know what?

Speaker 3 (22:54):
And that would have been a better way to have
handled it in my personal opinion.

Speaker 2 (23:00):
I don't disagree with you. I don't disagree with you.

Speaker 11 (23:03):
Because that is standing on your right.

Speaker 3 (23:05):
We won the game, and through regulation, because the clocks
in the stadium were zero, the clocks on the.

Speaker 9 (23:11):
Television we all watched.

Speaker 10 (23:13):
Yes!

Speaker 12 (23:14):
It's the fictitiousness.

Speaker 8 (23:16):
Of them bending the rules for.

Speaker 10 (23:19):
Vegas bettors because the internet sleuth claim between $ 28 and $ 52.

Speaker 3 (23:24):
Million were on the outcome that did occur now. But
if the Western Michigan coach stood on his right and
they didn't line up for that last fake second, the math.

Speaker 11 (23:37):
Is what the math is now.

Speaker 2 (23:40):
You know what? That's a great point, and I love it.

Speaker 4 (23:44):
And he probably, you're right, shouldn't have lined up, said, nah,
this game is over.

Speaker 2 (23:48):
You're not going to do this to my kids. Just
take the game. You want us to forfeit? That would
have been interesting.

Speaker 4 (23:53):
That would have been a great way to do it. Seriously,
and put the onus on them. We'll take more calls,
877-99 on Fox.

Speaker 6 (24:00):
Oh, we got somebody. We got somebody from Michigan, too.
We got David from Michigan. You're on with the Dan
Patrick Show, my brother.

Speaker 9 (24:06):
Good morning.

Speaker 2 (24:07):
Good morning.

Speaker 13 (24:09):
I turned the game off when it was 9-7.

Speaker 4 (24:12):
And you were disgusted, David. Weren't you totally disgusted?

Speaker 13 (24:16):
I was, but earlier in the week, I had a
feeling that Michigan was going to lay an egg. I
just had that feeling. But I found out about the
whole aftermath and the drama later, and what I'm wondering,
since I didn't watch the ending, is.

(24:36):
We all know Michigan got a gift, but did Michigan
beg and scream for that gift, or were they just
given that gift and.

Speaker 9 (24:43):
Said, okay, let's play it out?

Speaker 13 (24:45):
Because if that's the case, you've got to give them
a little grace on that one. And not call them
the villain this time?

Speaker 4 (24:52):
No, but my point is that it would never be
the other way around.

Speaker 2 (24:57):
That would never happen the other way around. Where Western Michigan.

Speaker 4 (25:01):
Where they put another second on the clock in the
big house for Western Michigan.

Speaker 2 (25:04):
Absolutely not. And have them beat Michigan. David, do you agree?
Is he still there?

Speaker 12 (25:09):
I'm here.

Speaker 2 (25:09):
David, that would not happen.

Speaker 4 (25:11):
I guarantee you they would not play end it like that.
They'd go like, oh no, Western Michigan gets another play
and they would set up Western Michigan to beat Michigan.

Speaker 2 (25:21):
It just wouldn't happen.

Speaker 13 (25:23):
I agree with that, but... My point was Michigan didn't–
you didn't see– well, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (25:32):
No, I know what you're saying. They didn't do it.

Speaker 13 (25:34):
Was Whittingham, like, going crazy on the sidelines and in
the ref's face, like, give us another second?

Speaker 2 (25:40):
No. No, no, no. I get that.

Speaker 4 (25:42):
But Michigan, because of they're a blue blood, they're one
of those schools for college football, they are going to
get the benefit of the doubt. Nobody wants to see
Western Michigan beat Michigan. I'm talking about from the college elites.

Speaker 3 (25:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (25:56):
You know what I mean? Like, that's a bad look.

Speaker 13 (25:57):
You know, I kind of laugh. I say, ha-ha, Western Michigan,
because I went to Eastern Michigan, and we would do
anything to beat a.

Speaker 11 (26:06):
Big Ten team.

Speaker 2 (26:07):
Oh, my God. Are you kidding? Western Michigan. And there
it was right there for them.

Speaker 4 (26:12):
Thanks for the call. 877-99 on Fox. We'll take more
calls because I know people are hot on this.

Speaker 2 (26:18):
Labor Day.

Speaker 11 (26:19):
Oh, wow.

Speaker 2 (26:19):
Join in. That's it.

Speaker 6 (26:22):
We got Jeffrey from Arizona. You're on with the Dan
Patrick Show.

Speaker 14 (26:26):
One piece on the mascot. Yeah, I totally agree with Rob.
Totally agree. And basically, if that were a shoe on
the other foot, Western Michigan would not get that.

Speaker 2 (26:39):
They wouldn't.

Speaker 4 (26:40):
I say that with total confidence that they would be like, oh, no,
Western Miller. Let's look at the other clock. Why do
we have another clock? Why are they doing this? We
should all be out. This is 2026. Sync up all
the clocks so we know when NBC flashes final, when
in the stadium, people in the stadium thought the game

(27:02):
was over.

Speaker 14 (27:04):
And it also takes 35 minutes just to view one
instant replay.

Speaker 7 (27:08):
Yes!

Speaker 14 (27:08):
I totally agree with you. And somebody made this other point,
and that why would a.
Like a team from the MAAC want to go ahead
and play a Blue Blood because they're going to get screwed.

Speaker 2 (27:20):
Yep. Every time.

Speaker 4 (27:21):
Every time if there's a school that they're going to screw,
it's going to be the smallest school. And I get it.
Western Michigan got their big payday to play. They're supposed
to be ground beef for Michigan.

Speaker 2 (27:32):
You know what I mean?

Speaker 4 (27:33):
That's what they're supposed to be. Come get your big check.
That's why they play those schools and why those schools play.
They know they normally don't have a shot to win.

Speaker 3 (27:40):
Yep.

Speaker 11 (27:40):
Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 14 (27:41):
But I'm almost just giving up on sports. At NBA,
all they do is dodge three-point shots. Teams leading by
22 points. There's no killer instinct. They wind up losing
the game.

Speaker 3 (27:51):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (27:52):
We've seen it.

Speaker 14 (27:54):
Index finger on the chest. And the players legitimately or
illegitimately complain because they get a foul call. WNBA, it's W-W-E-N.
And so I guess if you attend, you do get
your money's worth because it's two for one, just like hockey,
which is the only sport I really like. And then
you think baseball. They're finally getting their act together. But

(28:15):
I gave up watching that like– NBA like three years ago,
nothing but strikeouts and walks.

Speaker 2 (28:20):
I hear you.

Speaker 14 (28:21):
The only sport that I like basically is chess and
women's curling, and have a great day. I miss you
and Calvin doing sparring.

Speaker 9 (28:31):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (28:32):
We appreciate it. He said a woman's curling? Yeah, he did.

Speaker 4 (28:36):
And don't forget tonight, The Odd Couple, 7 to 10 Eastern,
right here on Fox Sports Radio. Martin Weiss will be
filling in for Calvin, and Martin will be with me
later on.

Speaker 2 (28:46):
So join The Odd Couple. 877-99 on Fox. Take some more.
We got some more. We got Peter from Florida. You're
on with the Dan Patrick.

Speaker 3 (28:52):
Show, man.

Speaker 7 (28:54):
Oh, hey.

Speaker 11 (28:55):
Thanks for taking my call.

Speaker 12 (28:56):
First-time call, long-time listener.

Speaker 2 (28:58):
Appreciate it.

Speaker 7 (29:00):
Sure thing.

Speaker 12 (29:01):
Just a couple of quick comments. First, I totally agree
with that. I want to get into what I totally
agree with you about officiating. They're just totally taking the
human element out of the game.

Speaker 2 (29:12):
We're humans. We make mistakes. We're human.

Speaker 4 (29:15):
Don't take the game away from people by going to
look at some new clock and telling people, oh, no,
this is the other clock that we always have.

Speaker 6 (29:25):
What?

Speaker 4 (29:26):
I've been covering sports for 40 years.

Speaker 2 (29:28):
I didn't know there was another clock.

Speaker 3 (29:31):
Exactly.

Speaker 12 (29:31):
And then my point to that is the thing is,
to me, it's just totally deceptive because I know I
can't be the only one when they showed, you know,
the the replay of the Hail Mary for the hundredth time.
And they showed, they showed that the dual, the dual screen,
the clock on one side of the screen, the Hail
Mary play on the other side. I'm sure I'm not
the only one that thought that was the stadium clock.

(29:54):
In other words, NBC has their own clock, and then
the officials have their own clock. Like you said, just
one clock.

Speaker 4 (30:06):
One clock so that we all know that the game
is over or the game is not over. If the
in-studio or the stadium clock and NBC's clock said a second,
then nobody would be challenging or upset.

Speaker 6 (30:21):
I got a question for both of you. Do you
think that the game should go to the 10th of
a second? Showing the 10th of a second? Or just
a full second? No, because the NBA did it. You
can't get a playoff in time. You know what I mean? Like, NBA,
I think it's. 4.

Speaker 2 (30:35):
It's. 4. You can get a shot.

Speaker 3 (30:37):
Right.

Speaker 2 (30:37):
No,. 3 is a tip. But you can get a
shot off in. 4.

Speaker 10 (30:39):
Right.

Speaker 2 (30:39):
There's no.

Speaker 12 (30:43):
Get a shot off or, yeah.

Speaker 4 (30:44):
They won't count a shot, right? It has to be
a tip in at the basket, right? And that was
the right way so that people don't get more time.
877-99 on Fox.

Speaker 2 (30:54):
We take more? You got more?

Speaker 6 (30:55):
Let's see what we got here. We got Patrick from Wisconsin.
You're on with the Dan Patrick Show. Patrick, what's up?

Speaker 11 (31:02):
Hey, good morning, fellas. I'm a little jealous. I love
your accent. Being from out east and what have you.

Speaker 2 (31:10):
Who, me? You think I'm from New York? Call me.

Speaker 3 (31:13):
We'll talk.

Speaker 2 (31:14):
New York, son. That's right.

Speaker 11 (31:16):
It sounds like my cousin Vinny.

Speaker 2 (31:18):
You know what I'm saying? My cousin Vinny.

Speaker 4 (31:20):
So, you know what's funny is I lived in Detroit
for 20 years, and I've been in L.A. for 10 years,
but the New York accent just won't go anywhere.

Speaker 2 (31:29):
It's here to stay.

Speaker 11 (31:30):
It's built in your DNA. It's fine.

Speaker 3 (31:34):
Yes.

Speaker 11 (31:36):
I'm actually, I'm so frustrated with the NCAA because certain
programs get like the Michael Jordan rules. Like Michigan, like Texas,
Ohio State.

Speaker 4 (31:54):
Certain schools, you feel like they're going to get the
benefit of the doubt.

Speaker 11 (31:58):
They're going to get the benefit of the doubt. But
here's my analogy about this pandemic. BS call. Remember probably
about 15, 18 years ago when Calvin Johnson scored a
touchdown against the Bears?

Speaker 4 (32:15):
I covered the game in Chicago. I covered every Lions
game while I worked in Detroit.

Speaker 7 (32:19):
I was there.

Speaker 11 (32:21):
I still cannot understand the NFL when it comes to
controlling the catch, quote-unquote.

Speaker 9 (32:29):
Mm-hmm.

Speaker 11 (32:30):
But yet a running back or a quarterback can just
jump over the line.

Speaker 2 (32:34):
And they can fumble the ball or whatever. Oh, they
broke the plane, right.

Speaker 11 (32:39):
Yeah. So this call is even worse than that. It's
almost like a Jeffrey Mayer was there. But, hey, that's
not a home run. I don't know. Apparently it is.
But those– You cannot make that call.

Speaker 2 (33:01):
I agree. You just can't.

Speaker 1 (33:04):
Nope.

Speaker 2 (33:05):
And Mike Pereira said that. Like, dude, you know what?
That game is over. You walk out.

Speaker 4 (33:10):
And people at Michigan, thanks for the call. 877-99 on Fox.
We'll squeeze in a couple more. people at Michigan would
have accepted it because their team played, they would have.

Speaker 3 (33:18):
100%.

Speaker 6 (33:18):
They wouldn't have burned the stadium down, right? They would
have looked at that and been like. They would have
thought the game was over.

Speaker 2 (33:23):
Yeah, and were like, we deserve to lose that game.

Speaker 4 (33:25):
So many people I know who are Michigan fans were like,
we didn't deserve to win that game.

Speaker 2 (33:30):
I didn't even celebrate. I was so pissed after that game. Yeah, no,
for sure.

Speaker 6 (33:34):
Let's see, we got Steve from North Hollywood. You're on
with the Dan Patrick.

Speaker 2 (33:38):
Show, man.

Speaker 8 (33:40):
Yeah, I'm Harold.

Speaker 2 (33:42):
Harold, Harold, how you doing?

Speaker 7 (33:44):
That's okay.

Speaker 8 (33:45):
You know what's frustrating to me?

Speaker 7 (33:47):
You made a good point, Rob.

Speaker 8 (33:48):
It's that 1%. Just like in our society, they get
all the breaks, and the little guy gets kicked to
the curb.

Speaker 2 (33:56):
Every time.

Speaker 4 (33:57):
And that's what you felt yesterday. Like, what did they
do to Western Michigan? Not, what a great win by Michigan.
Everybody left that game feeling Western Michigan got screwed.

Speaker 2 (34:10):
Am I right, Harold?

Speaker 8 (34:12):
Exactly. You're right on Rob. And it's just frustrating. Like
I said, it's just not in football.

Speaker 11 (34:17):
It's an RV day.

Speaker 8 (34:18):
The 99% of the public right now is getting screwed
by that 1%. And it's just, it wasn't, I left
after watching that game kind of, and I'm not, I
have nothing against Michigan.

Speaker 11 (34:30):
But I was bummed out.

Speaker 8 (34:31):
I said, when is that 99% going to get a break?

Speaker 2 (34:35):
Unbelievable. Thanks so much. Appreciate it. No doubt. Thanks, Harold.
All right. It is the Dan Patrick Show. We appreciate
you chiming in.

Speaker 4 (34:42):
Appreciate the calls on that. Obviously, in hour number two,
we'll have more opportunity for you to join in. Again,
this is a radio show, not a podcast where you
can't chime in. We want to hear from you. We
value your opinion. We do it on The Odd Couple
all the time. Coming up next, we're going to talk
about some of the quarterbacks.

Speaker 2 (35:01):
What about... Lamar Jackson, Joe.

Speaker 4 (35:03):
Burrow, Justin Herbert's chances this year, and Kerry, the perfect
guy to break that down. We'll talk some NFL football
as the season is about to happen. I can't believe it.

Speaker 2 (35:14):
Here we go.

Speaker 5 (35:15):
8-7.

Speaker 2 (35:17):
It is the odd— no, we're not. I'm sorry.

Speaker 4 (35:19):
It's the Dan Patrick Show. The odd couple filling in.
Rob Parker, Kerry Rhodes. Here on Fox Sports Radio. Stick
and stay America.

Speaker 2 (35:30):
America again.

Speaker 5 (35:32):
Thanks for listening to the Dan Patrick Show podcast. Be
sure to catch us live every weekday morning, 9 until
noon Eastern, 6 to 9 Pacific on Fox Sports Radio.
And you can find us on the iHeartRadio app at
FSR or stream us live on the Peacock app.

Speaker 7 (35:48):
All right.

Speaker 2 (35:49):
It is the Dan Patrick Show. Fox Sports Radio. Rob Parker.
Kerry Rhodes. In for Dan and the Danettes.

Speaker 4 (35:57):
And man, be sure to check out the Odd Couple
weekdays from 7 to 10 p.m.

Speaker 2 (36:04):
Eastern, 4 to 7 Pacific.

Speaker 4 (36:06):
That's right. Rob Parker and Kelvin Washington. We deliver insight,
not noise. Of course, listen to the Odd Couple Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app. And tonight, Martin Weiss.
We'll be filling in for Kelvin Washington, so I'm double
dipping on this Labor Day. Hope you're going to have
a great Labor Day. I mean, I know we got

(36:26):
a wet one out here. Is it supposed to rain today?

Speaker 2 (36:29):
Yeah, a little bit today, yeah. Yeah, like it rained.
I don't even know.

Speaker 4 (36:32):
I'm shocked the Dodgers were able to play last night
because it rained most of the day.

Speaker 2 (36:35):
I was going to go to the park, and then
I realized it was a night game. Couldn't get there.

Speaker 11 (36:40):
You called it.

Speaker 4 (36:41):
Yep. But let's talk about the NFL and some of
these quarterbacks, Kerry, of course. who knows the NFL inside
and out. Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, just some
quarterbacks and their chances going into the season.

Speaker 11 (36:59):
Lamar.

Speaker 1 (36:59):
Yep.

Speaker 9 (37:01):
Thoughts?

Speaker 2 (37:01):
This is a make-or-break year for Lamar. In what way?
I'll tell you. As great as he's been, there's been.

Speaker 6 (37:10):
Caveats throughout each one of those seasons, right, where maybe
a Mark Andrews drop here. Zay Flowers fumble here, a
Lamar interception. Like, it's always been, like, a thing.

Speaker 4 (37:21):
Last year, they played so poorly and should have won
the division. Lamar marches him down the field in Pittsburgh,
and the kicker misses. Not an 89-yard field goal, but
a makeable field goal.

Speaker 2 (37:34):
Like, seriously.

Speaker 6 (37:35):
Oh, no, yeah, it's not all Lamar, but it's one
of those years for him where— We've seen everything else.
When is he going to take this team on a
long run and get it done? And now you can't
blame it on Harbaugh, right? Now it's Lamar's team. And
so the pressure's going to be on him to come
out and win some games and get this thing done.
So I'm looking for a big year from him, though.

(37:56):
I'm expecting him to come out and be that guy
this year. So I want to see what he has.
I think Lamar is always in a tough spot because...
So many bad things have happened. I'm not trying to.

Speaker 4 (38:11):
Say Lamar has nothing to do with it because his
numbers haven't been great. But Mark Andrews in Buffalo. Drop
the ball. You can say whatever you want. Oh, people
trying to say the pass.

Speaker 3 (38:24):
No, no, no.

Speaker 2 (38:24):
No, it was a good pass. You know that was
a good pass. You got to catch that ball. Fumbles.
How many bad fumbles.

Speaker 14 (38:32):
Have they had? Jay Flowers.

Speaker 2 (38:33):
That's what I'm saying.

Speaker 6 (38:34):
Like, Zay Flowers fumbles, missed kick, dropped passes. There's been
a lot of things. It's just unbelievable.

Speaker 4 (38:39):
And I think that they're going to get, to me,
John Harbaugh not being there is a good thing.

Speaker 2 (38:44):
I really do.

Speaker 4 (38:44):
I know a lot of people think he's the savior
with the Giants or whatever. I don't see that. No,
Baltimore's going to be good this year.

Speaker 2 (38:51):
They got a team.

Speaker 6 (38:52):
They're going to be good. That's why I want to
see him get it done. Yeah, they're going to be good.

Speaker 2 (38:57):
Joe Burrow was like.

Speaker 4 (39:02):
I don't know what he's expecting defensively. You know, like,
we've seen the team. They spent a lot of money.
I know they've made some changes. They've made some changes, yeah.
But they spent a lot of money on the offense,
and they scored points. Speaking of Baltimore, I saw Joe
Burrow two years ago throw nine touchdowns against Baltimore and
lose both games. They threw nine touchdowns in two games

(39:25):
and lost both games because they can't stop anybody.

Speaker 2 (39:28):
Have they improved enough?

Speaker 5 (39:29):
No.

Speaker 4 (39:30):
That they're viable is joe burrow going to get them
to the postseason i.

Speaker 6 (39:35):
Think so i think they've improved a little bit there
so they started inside they brought in dexter lawrence to
to anchor the d-line so They are starting to build
from the inside out defensively. So I think they are
a little bit better, Rob, and I think they've done
enough for Cincinnati. I think they'll get a wild card
this year.

Speaker 10 (39:52):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (39:53):
Yeah, I do. Okay.

Speaker 4 (39:54):
And Justin Herbert, you know, I get it. He's a
prototypical quarterback. Everybody loves him. Size, strength, arm strength, all that.
Looks like he's from Cali. Yeah, like he looks like
he's a quarterback, like a– And every year there's something
going on and it doesn't happen for them.

Speaker 2 (40:12):
I mean, at some point, talk about Lamar.

Speaker 4 (40:15):
Because he's always in the top five every time they
make a poll a quarterback.

Speaker 1 (40:19):
Oh, no.

Speaker 6 (40:20):
He's in the same position with even more pressure than Lamar.
I mean, we know what Lamar can do. He's been
an MVP. Herbert's not even done that.

Speaker 2 (40:27):
Twice. Should have been three times. They robbed him of
one MVP. Exactly. And in the playoffs, Herbert had stunk.

Speaker 7 (40:34):
Right.

Speaker 6 (40:35):
He hasn't had like a real moment yet at all.
And so for him. His numbers are, yeah. Yeah, his
team this year, I'm picking the Chargers to win the
AFC West.

Speaker 3 (40:42):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (40:43):
And so if that's going to happen, he's going to
have a great year. So you're off the Chiefs, huh?

Speaker 6 (40:46):
Oh, yeah, I'm off the Chiefs when it comes to
that division. It's going to be the, it'll be the
Chargers or the Broncos in my opinion.

Speaker 2 (40:52):
Okay.

Speaker 5 (40:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (40:53):
That's going to be, yeah, I think this football season,
I'm interested. There's a lot of teams that I think
that were, Good the last couple years. They're definitely on
their other way, going the other way. Some other teams
are merging. I love how everybody has the Bears going
backwards or whatever.

Speaker 2 (41:11):
I just, you know, and they.

Speaker 4 (41:13):
Say, oh, yeah, Caleb was great on those great throws, but,
you know. I'm just like, what football are you watching? Like,
I'm not saying he's perfect.

Speaker 8 (41:26):
Right.

Speaker 4 (41:27):
But you can clean up and get better on the
little stuff. You can't teach what Caleb would.

Speaker 2 (41:33):
Am I right? Very much true.

Speaker 4 (41:35):
You cannot teach that. I try to tell people, you
know how he won his high school state championship?

Speaker 2 (41:41):
Do a game-winning touchdown with no time on the clock. That's... Iceman, baby.
Do you know what I mean? Like, that's something that
you built up. That's in you. I'm sorry. All right,
I can't wait. Hour number two, my hero, Lane Kiffin. Oh,
my goodness. He is my hero.

Speaker 4 (42:00):
Me and Kerry will go about it. It is the
Dan Patrick Show on Labor Day. The odd couple in,
Rob Parker, Kerry Rhodes.

Speaker 2 (42:07):
And you know what? Stick and stay.

Speaker 7 (42:09):
America.
