You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio Final Hour on this Wednesday, Dan and the
Dan Nets Dan Patrick Show.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Climb on board, Stay a while, new pole question coming up,
and if you'd like to dial us up, you can
eight seven to seven to three. DP Show email address
Dpadanpatrick dot com, Twitter handle the DP Show.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
Good morning.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
If you're watching on Peacock, thank you for allowing us
into your homes or wherever you're watching this program or
are radio affiliates around the country. Steelers have a press
conference in about an hour from now. I'm not sure
if they'll take questions from members of the media. I
hope they do. But the one thing about the Mike
Tomlin situation is it feels like nobody is factoring him
(00:43):
in to coach again. Now you do have to factor
in if he does coach, that team has to compensate
the Steelers because Mike Tomlin has two years left on
his contract. But it feels like a foregone conclusion that
Mike Tomlin is not going to be coaching next season.
There have been TV Networks shows that have already reached
(01:06):
out to Mike or his agent, one that I know of.
I'm guessing Fox will be reaching out or already has
with Jay Glazer. Jay Glazer a good friend of Mike Tomlin's.
If I'm NBC, I'd hire Mike Tomlin for the playoffs.
They have the super Bowl this year. Let's see what
he does in a big stage. Put him in there,
See how he does, See how he gets along with
(01:29):
everybody else. Chemistry there. If I'm CBS, I have him
in the studio this weekend, I put him in there.
Matt Ryan's not there, put him in there. You got
Bill Kauer in there. I think that could be fun.
You get the first interview with Tomlin, but then you
also get him breaking down these games. All right, Pole,
question for the final hour of the program. By the way,
stat of the Day is always brought to you by
(01:50):
Panini America, the official trading cards of the program.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
All right, Seedon that tomlind thing you're just talking about.
When nobody has him coaching, it feels a little we
It's pretty early. But you ever know somebody that is
like married for a long time and gets divorced and
then gets married again right away? What did you do
that for? Yeah, that's what it feels like with Tomlin.
He's been in a very long term relationship. Why are
you going to jump right into another one? Maybe maybe
(02:15):
take a year, take a beat.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
Yeah, palling.
Speaker 5 (02:17):
But I still don't think he wanted to leave the
Pittsburgh Steelers. I won't believe that. I think he read
the room and read the surroundings and chose to do
whatever the classy thing. But like a team like the
New York Jets, if they wanted to hire Tomlin, I
don't know if he would go there. They have tons
of draft capital, they got tons of draft picks.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Yeah, but yeah, I get the compensation. The problem is
you're still coaching the Jets.
Speaker 5 (02:40):
But he is a guy I don't believe wanted to
stop coaching until I hear different.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
I think he needed to. I think he needed to refresh.
It's nineteen years. That's an eternity in the coaching circles.
I mean even Harbaugh John didn't want to leave the Ravens,
but probably deep down new that he should leave the Ravens.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Yeah, seton.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
Yeah, I've said it a couple of times, but sometimes
things just run their course.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
He was there for a long time, you know, and.
Speaker 4 (03:09):
Sometimes it's like, man, it's not really it's not that
things are going wrong, it's just maybe we need to
freshen things up a bit. And I don't know does
Mike Tomlin want to coach the Steelers or does he
just want to coach? So if he just wants to
coach the Steelers, going to the Jets isn't going to
scratch that itch.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
I don't think there's a team right now that unless
he went to the Ravens. But that's not going to happen.
What other opening do you go? Okay, that's where Mike
Tomlin wants to go. That's a that's a better situation.
Now you can say, Okay, Atlanta. You know he's not
going to Tennessee the Giants. I just these these coaches,
(03:48):
they have to win. It's not yeah, I got another
job for five years. It's Mike Tomlin. Okay, we're going
to have a winning record, right Mike? And are we
going to win playoff games? Yes?
Speaker 3 (03:59):
Seton in a weird way.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
Mike Tomlin could be the perfect coach for the Ravens
because he's a defensive minded head coach. So let me
shure up a terrible defense that is really the reason
why they lost so many games this year, Lamar Jackson's put.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
Up forty points and you lose forty one to forty.
That's terrible.
Speaker 4 (04:17):
So Mike Tomlin can focus on getting the defense right
and then say, Lamar, who's the coordinators you like? And
bring in a guy that Lamar Jackson is like, this
is the guy that I want to play for. This
is the offense I want to run. In a weird way,
it could be a perfect fit.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
And nobody, though, is saying, oh, you know, who's the
leading candidate or who should be the leading candidate for
that job? Mike Tomlin. I haven't seen it yet. I
haven't heard anything yet. It just feels like, all right,
where does Mike Tomlin want to work in television next year?
Nothing about Hey, he's interested in Atlanta or the Dolphins,
(04:51):
the Raiders, you know, throw out these teams, the Browns.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Yeah, heton he.
Speaker 4 (04:57):
Should get a job on a local Pittsburgh affiliate and
just critique every game next year. For that, He's like, yeah,
I'm going to go into the media. I'm going to
be at you know, kat Katika, and I'm just going
to rip the Steelers every day.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
This is terrible. What kind of game plan is that's awful.
Speaker 5 (05:12):
Yeah, pol I still don't believe it was that he
wanted to quit the Steelers. And I think, let's say
that game the other night, they were a down one
with thirteen minutes to go. Let's say somehow they steal
that game and go to the second round of the
playoffs then get knocked out. Do you guys think he
would have stepped down because I would assume this plan
(05:34):
has been in his head for months and he didn't
make it in a twenty four.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Hour Well, the Ravens were moving on from John Harball
even if they made the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (05:40):
Which means I don't think it was Mike Tomlin's choice
in any way. I think he did the.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
How does it matter. He's not coaching anymore.
Speaker 5 (05:48):
It matters because I think the people think the Pittsburgh
Steelers just did nothing and Mike Tomlin stepped away voluntarily.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
I don't believe that's a case. Okay, so what if
they fired him. I'd love to know that, But what
is it matter? Because it's a very interesting story. I'd
love to know that.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
No, No, it's only interesting because you want to know if
he got fired or not. But what does it matter?
He left the Steelers. He's not coaching the Steelers.
Speaker 5 (06:11):
I think his coaching future would depend would really matter
that he wanted to still coach, whether be the Steelers
or other, and that would factor in his decision going
forward to go to media or up.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yeah, but he's you don't hear his name about any
coaching circles. So let's say he got fired, you want
to coach again, You can't coach, can't coach anywhere. You
haven't heard him say or anybody say that he's going
to coach someplace. Maybe they came to that understanding, but
they didn't. The Ravens had no problem saying they fired
John Harbaugh. No problem. Now the Steelers may say, look,
(06:45):
we want you owe it to you, Mike. We want
you to go out with your head held high. We're
not going to say we fired you. But do I
think Mike Tomlin with two years left, it feels like
somebody who's burnt out. That's the sense that I got
from this. Not you know, are the Steelers trying to
protect him and say, hey, look we got to move
(07:06):
on from you. We're gonna let you say you're stepping down.
If that's the case, and you think they fired him.
That's not a guy who then runs into TV. That's
a guy who coaches. And if you fire him now,
you don't know the Steelers any compensation. So I mean,
(07:28):
I think we're getting caught up on semantics that it
doesn't matter in the bigger picture. They need a coach
and Mike Tomlin has not been mentioned for a coaching vacancy.
Speaker 6 (07:38):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
Yeah, I don't know that any of us necessarily or
disputing or disagree with the idea that he was actually fired,
but they let him say face. I just don't think
that he just wants to coach Jarren. I think he
probably wanted to coach the Steelers, but now because he's
not coaching the Steelers anymore, he's just going to jump
right into the next job.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
I don't think that's the case.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
I think maybe he takes a year and then he'll
probably have teams calling him again.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
After that, Oh, he's going to have any job that
he wants. That just when does he want it? I mean,
how many jobs are safe when you look at the
entire NFL, that they're safe that if Mike Tomlin said
I'm interested in coaching the Packers, I would say Andy
Reid is certainly safe in Kansas City, Jim Harball with
(08:23):
the Chargers. But if you start to look at some
of these other you know, Ben Jhonson just got there,
Mike McDonald in Seattle. I mean, there's certain situations here safe.
Rabel is safe. He just got there. But Rabel wasn't
safe a couple of years ago in Tennessee.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
Which is one of the dumbest decisions still in recent memory.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
I mean, but it feels like if Mike Tomlin wanted
to coach a team, then he could. If you're Green Bay,
Mike Tomlin said, Hey, I'm interested in coaching Green Bay.
Are they going to keep Matt Lafleur. I don't know,
but it feels like Mike will have his pick of jobs,
whether it's next year, the year after that, the year
(09:04):
after that.
Speaker 7 (09:04):
Yes, Marph, what if the Bills wash out this weekend?
Speaker 2 (09:08):
Well, once again, I still feel like there's a team
that is still in the playoffs who might not have
the most secure position at head coach, just given everything
that's transpired here. I mean, Stefanski, two time Coach of
the Year. Then you got Harball, then you got Tomlin.
(09:30):
I can't remember an off season we're not even in
the off season yet, and you had these kind of
options available to you.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
Remarkable.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
But the Steelers will hold their press conference coming up
in an hour from now. A couple of phone calls
in here Bob and Seattle. Hey Bob, what's on your
mind today?
Speaker 8 (09:52):
Hey Bud?
Speaker 2 (09:53):
And you know, look, Sean McVay is safe, and you
know Kyle Shanahan safe.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
But you know that doesn't mean in a year from
now or two years from now.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
That everybody is safe that we're talking about here, all right, Hey, Bob.
Speaker 9 (10:08):
Ayth So looking forward to your interview with the Men's Rooms,
not in the men'sruom, but with the men's room on Thursday.
Speaker 10 (10:17):
And I'd like to see if you guys can play
the Mike Tommins career earnings game, because why would he
want to coach again if he's made this much money?
Speaker 2 (10:30):
Well, he walked away from fifty million dollars. See that's
the part of it where I side with PAULI that
man you're walking away from. They reported fifty million dollars
over the next two years. I don't think he's making
that kind of money in the I mean, he'll make
a lot of money in the media. If Brady's making
what he's making at thirty seven and a half, Mike
(10:53):
Tomlin might be a twenty million dollar a year guy.
If you're paying Romo eighteen million or Troy Aikman million
or Collins, Mike Tomlin's walking into a pretty healthy paycheck there.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
Steven Pennsylvania, Good morning, Steve. What's on your mind?
Speaker 11 (11:12):
Hey?
Speaker 12 (11:12):
Dan?
Speaker 3 (11:14):
Hey Steve?
Speaker 8 (11:15):
Hey five to eleven Granddad bod two thirteen. I think
I have the obvious perfect landing spot for Mike Tomlin.
I see him here. It is introducing Mike Tomlin, the
host of the Dan Patrick two point zero Show.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
I hope he's striving for something better than that, but
thank you Steve. Bob and Seattle mentioned. I'm going to
be on a show, The Men's Room in Seattle, very
popular show and I think number one radio program in Seattle.
I'll be on that tomorrow. Actually we taped it yesterday.
I had a lot of fun with those guys. Let's
see Russell in Philadelphia. Hi, Russ, what's on your mind today?
Speaker 11 (11:58):
Hey?
Speaker 13 (11:58):
What's second?
Speaker 14 (11:59):
Tom?
Speaker 13 (12:00):
Long time? My thoughts on Toime Whin I think you
should chill and take a year off getting thoughts some
things situated like Peyton did maybe do some TV for
a little bit, and then you know, Cherry pick a
team to go coach next year.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
He's going to have options, but it feels like, let's
let's get into it now. Get a hold of this job.
You know, you get in and you get a hold
of these jobs. You don't want to let go of
these jobs because there's always going to be another coach
and or another player and they're going to be available. Uh,
Dane in Texas? Hi, Dane, what's on your mind today?
Speaker 11 (12:39):
Hey? Good morning, Dan. I had two things, one on
Marcus Freeman and one on yesterday's point about NBA MVPs. Okay,
First with Marcus Freeman, for all the points you mentioned earlier,
I think that makes him a great candidate. Plus one
you forgot is just how crazy it is to be
a college football coach. I mean, the immaturity levels of
(13:02):
these kids at NIL. If he moved to Pittsburgh, at
least you'd have salary caps and contracts. Yeah. Yes, and no,
the NBA and MVPs. I'm gonna give you two hints.
The seventy six seventy seven season, he wasn't an MVP,
but he should have been an MVP for his team.
(13:22):
Now I think he'll get it on this clue. Bill
Walton called him the best teammate he.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
Ever had Maurice Lucas.
Speaker 11 (13:30):
Yes, because Walt was so great. One reason was because
Maurice Lucas protected him. I mean he was an enforcer.
If you messed with Lalton Hearts album, you'd have to
deal with Maurice. And remember Game two in the Spectrum
when he took.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
On Darryl Dawkins.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
Yeah, yeah, Darryl Dawkins was never the same, never the
same after Maurice Lucas went after him, and you did
not want to mess with Maurice Lucas, like when you
put the power the power forward, Maurice Lucas. Pete and Jacksonville.
Hi Pete, what's on your mind today?
Speaker 13 (14:06):
Hey?
Speaker 14 (14:07):
Dan, just ironed to talk to you.
Speaker 15 (14:09):
Man.
Speaker 14 (14:10):
Oh my god, I'm so excited. I'm Starscroup. I just
want to tell you I met you in two thousand
and five and the Super Bowl went in the trit
retired and I met Chris.
Speaker 13 (14:21):
Bernan from a big fan.
Speaker 14 (14:23):
It's my first down call. I'm six foot one, I'm
a hundred and fifty town okay, get the team.
Speaker 2 (14:30):
Thank you, Pete, thank you, thank you. I don't remember
meeting you in Jacksonville. Come on, yeah yeah, I.
Speaker 5 (14:36):
Mean it was the guy with the eyes and the hair.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
I've met a lot of people.
Speaker 7 (14:40):
Come on, Pete, you know Pete?
Speaker 3 (14:41):
Yeah, yeah, man.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
That's when I needed security because that that was Jacksonville.
In Jacksonville, the Eagles and the Patriots. And that's when
I had fred X Freddie Mitchell on and he didn't
know the names of the defensive backs for the Patriots.
But you know, in fairness to fred X, a lot
(15:04):
of players, current players, they'll talk about numbers, you know,
they'll say, oh, you know thirty two, you got twenty eight.
And so he was talking about the Patriots secondary. We
had him on Sports Center. He was still in the
early Sports Center, and he started talking about the numbers,
and I said, wait a minute, do you know the
names of the defensive backs for the Patriots. They didn't,
(15:29):
And so this was live TV and it just looked like,
you know, I don't know who these bums are the Patriots,
even though you had like Lawyer Malloy and Rodney Harrison,
you had great defensive backs. And I remember the fallout
from that the next day in the Eagle fans who
were in Jacksonville, and they were mad at me, and
(15:52):
I remember having to have security to and from the
Sports Center set the rest of that week. But all
that was was he just said their numbers, and I
realized that he didn't know their names, and it came
off as it doesn't matter who's in the secondary, nobody's
going to be able to stop me. All right, take
(16:13):
a break. More phone calls coming up. Also, Lebron's agent
says some things that Lebron didn't like. We'll have that
for you coming out. Thanks for listening to The Dan

Away, I always keep an eye on the point spreads.
Anything's going up or going down. Miami is now an
eight and a half point underdog. They were seven and
a half, now eight and a half. The over under
went down a point, now down to forty seven and
a half. NFL lines, the Bills are now getting one
and a half. They were favored by one and a
half in Denver. The Niners are getting seven and a half.
(17:35):
In Seattle, Texans getting three with the Patriots, and the
Rams are three and a half point favorites against the Bears.
Weather is expected to be thirteen degrees in Chicago. Not
sure what the weather is going to be like in
New England for the Patriots game. Maybe we could check
on that. Don't know if Denver's got any weather coming
(17:56):
In Seattle, I'm guessing rain, yes, Paul.
Speaker 5 (18:00):
Patriots home game thirty nine degrees, Seattle at home forty
nine degrees. Broncos also weirdly forty eight degrees.
Speaker 3 (18:08):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
Any rain in the forecast in Seattle, I see none.
Any rain in the forecast in New England, I don't
see it. There's a checking on that one, right, the
Bears will be cold. A couple of phone calls in here,
Nick and Illinois. Hey Nick, what's on your mind today?
Speaker 12 (18:30):
Hey Dan, thanks for taking my call.
Speaker 11 (18:33):
Six foot one ninety five.
Speaker 13 (18:36):
Before I get into my take, I got to take.
Speaker 3 (18:38):
On Mike Tomlin.
Speaker 16 (18:39):
I want to give you one quick fact about where
I'm from.
Speaker 7 (18:42):
Peori, Illinois.
Speaker 16 (18:43):
We have the oldest amateur baseball league in America, started
in nineteen sixteen. Notable alumni Jim Tony, Joe Girardi, Ben Zoberson,
many more. Mike tomlin sneaky landing spot for him, in
my opinion, the Raiders. They got a young core. Get
Mendoza with that number one pick. Let Brady mentor him
(19:05):
and just throw all your money into both lines. Mendoza
is the kind of guy that will buy into any
kind of culture that Mike Tomlin wants to establish, and
I think, you know, he could have a potentially good
future here with him in a couple of years.
Speaker 7 (19:20):
What are your thoughts on that.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
All right, thank you, Nick.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
Mike Tomlin would be going from one of the most
stable ownerships to the Raiders. That would concern me. Even
if Tom Brady is there, you get Mendoza, Ashton gent
brought Bauers. Is Max Crosby going to be there? I
just don't see him coaching. I don't know if he's
(19:46):
you know, hey, I'm leaving the Steelers now. I want
to coach. I want to prove that I can coach
someplace else. I just don't see that. Just feels like
he's going to be in TV for a little while
and then he'll have his pick. He might the Raiders
job be opening in two years. It might be, Hey,
you know now, I could take over that job. The
Lakers are twenty three and fourteen. Maybe they're maybe twenty
(20:12):
four and fourteen. They blew out the Hawks, didn't they.
Rich Paul the founder of Clutch Sports and partnership with Lebron.
He launched a new podcast with former ESPN personality Max Kellerman.
On Monday's episode, Rich Paul said that he would trade
(20:34):
Austin Reeves to Memphis for Jaren Jackson Junior, the third
if he were in charge of the Lakers. He said,
if I was with the Lakers, I'd be targeting their
big man. He was then asked by Max what Los
Angeles would have to give up to get the defensive
(20:54):
player of the year. He would offer expiring contracts in
addition to the last first round picks. They can offer
twenty thirty one or twenty thirty two, or they could
trade Austin Reeves. Well, I mean, he's got an opinion
on what he would do if he was running the Lakers.
(21:15):
The problem is that it doesn't take long to connect
the dots of does Lebron want this? His agent is
talking about this, and now if you're covering the Lakers,
what are you doing?
Speaker 3 (21:27):
You're gonna say, Hey, Lebron.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
Rich Paul said that you should trade Austin Reeves to
get Jared Jackson. What do you think? Do you agree?
I don't know if I need my agent to have
a podcast, but rich Paul went on to say believes
Austin Reeves would thrive in Memphis and the Grizzlies would
(21:49):
pay him what he deserves.
Speaker 3 (21:52):
He wrapped up the.
Speaker 2 (21:53):
Argument by stating the building blocks of a contender would
be there with Doncic and Jaren Jackson Junior the third. Oh,
I like them getting Jaron Jackson Junior.
Speaker 3 (22:02):
I do.
Speaker 2 (22:03):
I think he's a really good player. But Austin Reeves
is still on the Lakers, and if you're covering the Lakers,
you're certainly asking Lebron what his take is. H Okay, yeah,
(22:23):
now they got to maybe do something. I was I
was watching JJ Reddick at a press conference, and he
looks miserable. It's just there's such a bad defensive team
and it just drives him crazy.
Speaker 3 (22:36):
You can he doesn't.
Speaker 2 (22:38):
He's never hid his emotions like it's there, and uh,
he's just kind of rattling off stats and he just
it just seems.
Speaker 3 (22:47):
Like, God, we're terrible. You know, we should be this,
we should be that.
Speaker 2 (22:52):
Well, when your best player doesn't play defense, no, Now,
granted Luca doesn't maybe have to play a lot of defense,
but it would be nice if he played a little
bit of defense.
Speaker 3 (23:04):
Yes, Marv.
Speaker 7 (23:05):
But two things.
Speaker 17 (23:06):
First, he can't play defense even if he tried. He
doesn't just have he just doesn't have the footspeed. He
just can't play defense at the NBA level. So let's
not do that. But also, if you're a Lakers fan
is like, oh my gosh, more drama that we don't need.
Rich Walk Lebron, your agent has a podcast and he's
(23:26):
talking about trading our second to third best player. Yeah,
this just adds on and we're trying to compete for
I guess a championship.
Speaker 2 (23:34):
And then I saw where Anthony Davis the NBA's version
of a Carfax. He's injured again and gonna miss I
don't know how many weeks, but they're eventually going to trade.
They'll find somebody who'll go.
Speaker 3 (23:49):
You know what, we need Anthony Davis.
Speaker 2 (23:53):
Somebody should do the Game of Operation where it's just
Anthony Davis with all the injuries and then you you
pick out like a bone out of it and then
where it'll buzz if you touched the side, if you're
old enough to remember the Game of Operation. Anthony Davis,
he's had injuries. I didn't know where possible I get.
(24:13):
It feels like it's thirty injuries that he's had, or
you know, conditions or something that he's had in his career.
Speaker 3 (24:23):
Yeah, Paulie, the past.
Speaker 5 (24:24):
Eight years, Anthony Davis has played more than sixty five
games once.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
Yeah, yes, Ton does he come out with some kind
of street closed collection.
Speaker 7 (24:33):
You know, everyone has their own line. Maybe it's something
to look at or make a few bucks off not playing.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
But when you bring you know, you look at a
car and you want to see the car fax, Like
that's that's what I want to see. How many collisions
have you been in? Fender benders? Anthony Davis. I can't
imagine somebody who's been injured as often as Anthony Davis
in the history of the NBA. Like there's guys who
(24:58):
play through things. It doesn't feel like Anthony Davis plays
through anything. It's like, oh what, I don't know.
Speaker 17 (25:07):
Yes, marm he's got a constant grimace on his face
no matter what he's putting up forty to twenty something's
always hurting.
Speaker 2 (25:15):
The team has a grimace on their face too, because
they're paying him to not do anything.
Speaker 7 (25:20):
And they traded Luca Doncherton.
Speaker 2 (25:22):
I know, well, because you win with defense, you got
to be out there to play, you do, yes, the
best ability is availability. You got to be out there
to be able to play. And that's why you know,
You're looking at the MAVs situation and you go, Okay,
we've turned the team over to a nineteen year old
who should really be playing his freshman year in college.
(25:46):
And Cooper flagg I thought that he would just kind
of ease into the lineup, but that's with Kyrie and
Anthony Davis, and he would be like, maybe, you know,
fifteen to eight guy, something like that. Now, all of
a sudden, you go out on the floor. You got
to be the guy. There's no Kyrie, no Anthony Davis.
Is You're the guy. You're nineteen years of age. Incredible.
(26:11):
Tony in California, Hi, Tony, what's on your mind?
Speaker 10 (26:15):
Hey, good morning guys. Hey, so Dan, it's a great
day to be a Clipper fan. Can you believe it?
Reggy Aloisious is jumped on the bandwagon yesterday. Clippers are
ten and two best records in the NBA over the
last month and Kawhi playing like Kobe.
Speaker 3 (26:33):
All right, do you think it's sustainable?
Speaker 10 (26:36):
Tony, Well, amidst this hot streak, an article came out
last weekend. It's not the ten worst season, it's just
ten most depressing seasons for the Clippers, and already they're
listed this season.
Speaker 2 (26:52):
You know, at least you tried, you know, you even
gave Kawhi a fake job like you're trying, they're trying.
You got James Harden there. I'd retire a jersey, you know,
I would do something to you know, how about a celebration.
Speaker 5 (27:10):
You mean Lloyd Vought Knight is really going to bring
the people.
Speaker 2 (27:13):
If it's Lloyd Vaught, I'm fine with that too. Tom Chambers,
wasn't he a Clipper at one point?
Speaker 17 (27:19):
Yes, Marvin, you bring Chris Paul back, he retires jersey,
that won't be awkward.
Speaker 2 (27:27):
Tylo out there shaking his hand. Lawrence Frank out there,
Steve Balmer, Yes, Tom.
Speaker 13 (27:34):
Mark Jackson doing up with the Clippers to warrant something
to stretch a little bit.
Speaker 2 (27:39):
But they haven't retired a jersey. But you got that
new arena maybe that you want to wait until until
what cool?
Speaker 3 (27:49):
Why Kawhi retires?
Speaker 2 (27:55):
He's kind of been retired, yeah, but he you know
when he shows you those flashes where you go, what if?
Speaker 3 (28:03):
What if?
Speaker 2 (28:04):
And that's gonna be his career what he did and
then and he started out, you know that's a Hall
of Fame trajectory, winning titles and then going to Toronto
and then all of a sudden, it was like the
artist formerly known as Kawhi Leonard and he'll be a
Hall of Famer, but just what he could have been.
Speaker 5 (28:26):
Yeah, Pauline, I'm looking at Kawhi's game log, like you said,
when he plays it's fantastic. Just in the past month,
he had a game of forty five and seven. Yeah,
last month he had a game of fifty five and eleven.
Speaker 7 (28:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (28:37):
I mean if you just looked at it blindly and
you look at his stats like, oh, he's a very
good player.
Speaker 2 (28:42):
But it's almost as if, yeah, he put up fifty
five and he's gonna have to take a couple of
days off, a couple of games off. But when he
comes back, let's see Trip in Vegas, Hi, Trip, welcome back.
Speaker 3 (28:55):
What do you have for me?
Speaker 13 (28:57):
Hey, good morning?
Speaker 16 (28:57):
Then thanks for taking my call.
Speaker 6 (28:58):
I got a show question, then a tom One comment
at what point.
Speaker 10 (29:03):
Yesterday after the third hour and this morning did you
hire PAULI back?
Speaker 3 (29:07):
Paulie came back.
Speaker 2 (29:10):
He sat out the last hour, he was not feeling well,
and we send him home seat and said, you know,
did I fire paul yesterday?
Speaker 3 (29:16):
I just thought it was inappropriate that you fired him
mid show.
Speaker 4 (29:19):
I felt bad, and then I was trying to stay
paul in your honor. I was trying to stage a walkout.
We were all going, thank you. Everyone has their time.
Something's run its course. Like Mike Tomlin.
Speaker 3 (29:28):
Yeah, yeah, Paul was under the weather.
Speaker 4 (29:30):
He fought through two hours and he shows had what
eighteen nineteen years too, It's basically the same timeline.
Speaker 2 (29:35):
Well, this is his consecutive game streak. He's still alive. Yeah,
he did show up. You know, it's like, who is it?
Josh Allen took a snap in the last game of
the regular season to keep his consecutive game street was
that right?
Speaker 3 (29:50):
Yeah? Lee in Florida? Hi Lee? What's on your mind?
Speaker 14 (29:56):
Hey?
Speaker 9 (29:56):
DP, How you doing good?
Speaker 11 (29:57):
Sir?
Speaker 9 (30:00):
Last comment just on Mike Tomlin, and I totally agree
with you on you know he's gonna sit out, But
also don't you think, I mean, after ten years of
all those quarterbacks in that rotation, he's gonna wait to
have one of the best quarterback offensive quarterbacks in the
league before he takes another job. And I'll listen off there.
Speaker 11 (30:20):
Thanks.
Speaker 2 (30:21):
Yeah, Well, chances are you don't get too many openings
when you have a real good quarterback, unless it would
be Buffalo Johnny and Pittsburgh. Hi Johnny, what's on your mind?
Speaker 16 (30:32):
Hey, gents, A six 'y three, a Husky two sixty.
Speaker 10 (30:38):
Husky.
Speaker 13 (30:39):
Three quick things.
Speaker 6 (30:40):
I feel like I'm already exhausted from all this, but
a couple quick things. The draft is I believe in
less than one hundred days, whoever takes a gig on
top of job security has the draft forthcoming with a
lot of stack picks number one, number two. There's a
lot of comparisons here, I believe to the Sean Payton situation.
(31:01):
And the difference between resignation and getting terminated is that
even if he takes a year off and he comes back,
I think there's a good faith agreement he doesn't go
to a competitor, But if he does, there is they
are old compensation. I believe that is the case with Tomlin.
Speaker 2 (31:19):
For the next two years they're open there, they get compensation.
After that then he's a free agent. But the next
two years, if he takes another job, I don't know
if there's any Hey, if you don't go to a competitor,
everybody's a competitor. I mean, maybe not a direct competitor
like Cleveland. If you would have said at the beginning
of the year, three coaches in the AFC North are
(31:43):
going to get fired or they will step down. You
would have started in Cincinnati, I'm guessing Zach Taylor and
Kevin Stefanski, and then you would have probably said, wait
a minute, are you telling me that John Harball or
Mike Tomlan won't be coaching their team next year? And
(32:04):
then it turns out Cincinnati keeps their head coach, uh
Jerman or Hermann.
Speaker 3 (32:12):
In Florida, here you go, jermand perfect.
Speaker 15 (32:16):
Hey Dan first time longtime five to nine stout two
twenty south fire firefighter stout, diehard Steelers fan listen. I
still remember exactly where I was when Mike tom was
named head coach, and I'll be honest, I was pretty
devastated at first because the Post Gazette had leaked Rush Grim.
Speaker 11 (32:37):
Was our guy.
Speaker 3 (32:38):
Yeah, Dealers nation.
Speaker 14 (32:39):
Was fired up.
Speaker 15 (32:40):
We couldn't wait an awesome career. I mean, the guy
was just a solid especially Cower stamp of approval. Then
news breaks some young guy absolutely floored the Ruinies in
his interview nineteen years later, I couldn't be more grateful.
Mike Tomin's an outstanding individual, true leader of men, and
(33:00):
we are better fans for having coached the Steelers for
nearly two decades.
Speaker 3 (33:05):
I agree.
Speaker 2 (33:06):
I mean, these coaches don't come very often. They're not available.
He did a great job there. Did he underachieve at times?
Speaker 3 (33:16):
Yes? Did he overachieve at times? Yes he did. Do
you go back to, you know, the Rooney rule.
Speaker 2 (33:25):
He got the opportunity to do the interview, and it
felt like the Steelers were already hiring Russ Grimm. And
I talked to Tony Dungee about this, and Tony said
that Mike Tomlin went in there and blew them away,
that it felt like Russ grim was getting the job.
But they went through the process of the Rooney rule.
And that's why. You know, two other coaching candidates African American,
(33:49):
and I remember them telling me they weren't going to
get the job. And I said, but you get better
by doing the interview because you'll hear sometimes, oh that
coach didn't interview. Well, go in and learn what they
ask you. So when you get that chance and maybe
you blow them away like Mike Tomlin did. And it's
tough to say that for me, a white person telling
(34:11):
an African American candidate, yeah, you're probably not getting the job.
But don't pass up the opportunity to understand what they're
going to ask you in a job search, and not
all teams are the same, but you can go in
there and go, oh my gosh, I never thought of that.
Or next time around, I will have these answers and
(34:32):
maybe it's you know, I'm going to blow you away
with my personality. I'm going to blow you away with
my knowledge. And you know that has happened before where
somebody is not the second or third candidate, they go
in there and they end up stealing the job, all right,
because it's an inexact science when you're bringing people in
(34:54):
to tell you about your football team, and they may
tell you something that you don't know, and that's when
they peak your interest.
Speaker 3 (35:00):
All right, Well, take a break. Last call for phone calls?
What we learned?
Speaker 2 (35:03):
What's in store tomorrow after this? Thanks for listening to
The Dan Patrick Show podcast. Be sure to catch us
live every weekday morning nine until noon eastern six to
nine Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, and you can find
us on the iHeartRadio app at FSR or stream us
live on the Peacock Act. More phone calls coming up.
Last call for phone calls? What we learn what's in
(35:24):
store tomorrow. I was just told that there is a
little boy, he's a little over one years one year old,
not one years old, and he's watching the show and
he's there with his dog and his dad is there
with him. But he said, Hey, my son's locked in
too watching the show. So little Jacob, who's watching? We say, helone,
(35:47):
did we come up with a onesie on this show,
like a Dan Patrick show?
Speaker 3 (35:50):
Onesie? Did we have that at one point seating? Yeah,
we did. Back in the day, we had some. Yeah,
and that was just for Todd Sure involved into something
that was a threesy. Wow, it was a three it
was a three XL.
Speaker 7 (36:05):
It was a threesy.
Speaker 2 (36:07):
Let's see this. Dan Sports History phone calls. Stealer press
conference in about fifteen minutes from now Corey in Indiana.
I don't expect much out of the press conference unless
the members of the media really want to dive and
dig down and find out if Mike Tomlin was fired
(36:28):
or he stepped down. That would be I think the
only part of this. Now you're going to ask about
Aaron Rodgers. They're going to say, well, you know, we
got to do our exit interview. I mean, there's there's
ways of dancing around all these questions. It depends on
how forthcoming they want to be.
Speaker 5 (36:43):
Yeah, boy, imagine the press asked the owner of the Steelers,
can you walk us through your meeting, your final meeting
with Mike Tomlin and who initiated his departure.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
And all he has to do is say, Mike came
to my office and he sat down and we exchanged pleasantries,
and he said, you know, the more I've been thinking
about this, the more that I'd like to step away
from this. I've given you everything I got. We didn't
get over the hump, we didn't win playoff games, and
maybe it's maybe it's a best that I go my
(37:14):
way and you go your way, and I'll help you
in any way possible.
Speaker 3 (37:17):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (37:18):
If you know you want my opinion on bringing in
a coaching candidate, I'll help you in anyway. That's probably
how I would sum it up if I'm the owner. Yes, Tod,
what if.
Speaker 17 (37:29):
The fans were chanting somehow we love tom Wood, don't leave?
Speaker 7 (37:33):
Tom would have change his mind.
Speaker 3 (37:35):
Well, there's no there's no fans of the press conference,
not at.
Speaker 17 (37:37):
The press caurds, but over these past several weeks if
they were showing support.
Speaker 7 (37:41):
Somehow, and during the opposite, I'd like get out of here.
We're done with your fintory.
Speaker 3 (37:44):
In Indiana, Hi Corey, what's on your mind today?
Speaker 10 (37:48):
Hey DP show, Thanks for having me X two.
Speaker 18 (37:53):
I'm an Indiana University grad and I was curious your
thoughts on the ticket prices for the National Championship game.
Miami fans had access as suit as the game was over.
Indiana fans had to wait. Shut the price they're getting
driven up. What are you guys thoughts?
Speaker 2 (38:07):
Uh, that's capitalism, that's just you know, they're pretty pretty steep.
Speaker 3 (38:15):
Still pretty stupid. Yeah, yeah, it's unfortunate.
Speaker 4 (38:20):
Yeah, that's why we do the whole like, never met
anybody who had enough money? Yeah, show me a billionaire
who doesn't want more money. That's why they shouldn't, ye know,
because that stupid crap. Yeah, it's unfortunate.
Speaker 2 (38:31):
You know, you would hope that Indiana would be able
to get access just like Miami fans.
Speaker 3 (38:36):
Ken in South Dakota, Hi, Ken.
Speaker 12 (38:39):
All right, thanks for having me five Ken two thirty
the other day, and you said you mentioned that you
were didn't know how long until.
Speaker 11 (38:47):
You were going to hang it up.
Speaker 12 (38:48):
And I just had a idea for the last show
to have your wives and significant others on to try
to give their thoughts. And I hope you're on long
enough for the day and that's too get the senior
discount of Denny's. But I just don't want to hear
your thoughts about that idea.
Speaker 2 (39:06):
Yeah, we toyed with the idea of having our wives
on the show. It wouldn't be the last show because
last show is probably going to be the Friday of
the Super Bowl in Atlanta and there'd be too many
moving parts there.
Speaker 3 (39:19):
But I don't know.
Speaker 2 (39:20):
We're toyed with the idea doing something having the wives
on here.
Speaker 3 (39:25):
Uh co peasy in Palm Beach.
Speaker 14 (39:30):
How do you do, Dan? How do you do?
Speaker 11 (39:32):
Dan? X?
Speaker 10 (39:34):
Pleasure to be on with you again.
Speaker 19 (39:36):
If Mike Tomlin does not, he didn't.
Speaker 11 (39:38):
Want to be there.
Speaker 19 (39:39):
He is two years on his contract, so now he
can't be a free agent.
Speaker 10 (39:43):
So if they really wanted to fire him, I think
he got to the point.
Speaker 19 (39:47):
And I think you kind of know Mike much better.
He's a tough dude, he's good, so I think he
steps away, as you said, and Miss Steelers, if anything.
They'll get draft picks for it. My man in Indiana,
he's one hundred percent right. I live down here in
South Florida. I wanted to go to the game the
(40:07):
root of my alma mater.
Speaker 6 (40:09):
It's impossible.
Speaker 2 (40:10):
Yeah, I mean it's close to like Super Bowl numbers.
It's crazy. And you know what they know, the Indiana fans,
they travel and they'll spend that money.
Speaker 3 (40:20):
This day in sports history, Paul got a couple for you.
Speaker 5 (40:22):
Nineteen forty eight, plastic helmets were prohibited in the NFL.
They were okay up until forty eight. Then they got
rid of plastic helmets.
Speaker 3 (40:30):
It's wild.
Speaker 5 (40:31):
Nineteen fifty one, the first NFL Pro Bowl Game was
played in Los Angeles. Nineteen fifty four, Marilyn Monroe and
Jodamaju were married. Their marriage lasted only nine months. That
seventy three, the Dolphins went undefeated and won the Super
Bowl seventy four, the World Football League was founded. Seventy six,
Ted Turner bought the Atlanta Braves like twelve million and
(40:51):
an O two. Barry Bond signed a five year, ninety
million dollar contract with the Giants.
Speaker 3 (40:58):
Yeah, Bonds made a ton of money after joining the giants. Yes, Tom, I.
Speaker 9 (41:02):
Played tackle football with friends in those plastic hommuch, which
should have just been like.
Speaker 17 (41:05):
Some kind of thing you put on a bookshelf and
not crash into each other on a playground.
Speaker 3 (41:09):
What did you learn today?
Speaker 17 (41:09):
I learned that it took you three days to get
through the movie, one battle after another, and would give the.
Speaker 7 (41:13):
Academy Award to Sean Penn.
Speaker 3 (41:14):
Yes, Satan. What did you learn? Mike Toland's future uncertain? Marvin?
Speaker 7 (41:19):
You think Sean Penn's going to win the Oscar?
Speaker 2 (41:21):
Yes, I do, Paul, big press conference coming up every January.
