I've never played Shinnecock, but I've covered the US Open
when Raymond Floyd won I think that was nineteen eighty
five or eighty six, and that is a workout. That
course is a workout, and I would even play I
was just walking. It will be very, very, very challenging.
This is one of those if you're under par, you're

probably winning because the wind will play a big role.
And that is a tough, tough course. Doesn't look like fun.
Actually it looks fun. I don't think that playing it
is fun. I think it's just survival of the fittest.
It's one of those like Pinehurst number two. It was

an experience. I didn't need to do it again, even
though it's a legendary course. There's certain courses where you
go too tough, Bethpage Black, too tough, like you want
to play it just because you check it off the
list of great courses around around the world. I haven't
been to Bandon Dunes yet, but there's a lot of
beautiful courses out there.

Yes, Dylan, Yeah, Shanacock might rank at the top of
most difficult to get to, although as the proflies, it's
very close.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Yes, if you got a helicopter. I remember playing a
course in Ireland, Old Head and there were people Dan
Marino was there, Wayne heizinga there and they landed helicopters
in there to play. We had to drive two and
a half hours.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
You can get a left on the chopper.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
No, no, no, but I saw the choppers there, all right,

finals or celebrating after playing in the finals.

I was talking to Tim Legler about this last hour.
I said, you know, the Spurs are a young team,
but they seemed really tired at the end of all
of those games. Why why is that? Younger guys should
be in great shape, But it felt like you guys
had a different gear.

I mean, I guess you saw it. I didn't see.
I didn't see that. I didn't I could tell if
they was tired or not. They're a really good team,
young and maybe coming off that game the seven, you know,
game seven, I guess, uh, okay, see, But firstly, I
don't think they were tired, but you know they're a
really good young team and they just go keep fighting.

If somebody had never seen Jalen Brunson play, how would
you describe his style?
Speaker 5 (03:43):
Scale, scale, and footwork. That's pretty much and like elite
shot making. So that's how that's my three right there.

And he's not afraid either. No, no, but when did
you notice that? You go back to college and all
of a sudden you knew, okay, there's something different.
Speaker 5 (04:02):
Yeah, when he came in as a freshman, like McDonald's
all American and everything, and he started like he started
as a freshman on our on the championship team. So
you know that, well, coach right with Jay Wright as
a coach, and that's not easy to do. And it
just him go out there fighting every single day in
the summer, the summer sessions and then you know, coming

to the you know, the our first like preseason, he
was just you could just see the skill and the
toughness he.

Had right away.
Speaker 5 (04:35):
And that's how that's how he started on a championship
team as a freshman.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
H Jay Wright joined us yesterday and coach said that
you guys made fun of Jalen when he was the
preseason n I t m v P and as a freshman,
and you guys were making fun of him that he
was trying too hard to be the m v P,
when according to coach, you guys felt like anybody could
have been the MVP of that preseason and I tea.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (05:04):
Oh, I was a really trip when I was young
at that time too.
Speaker 4 (05:08):
I was just trying to make sure I mess up
on that court. I was really worried about that.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
And he talks about you came in as a skinny
kid and you'd go, you go one on one with
Josh Hart all the time, and that like that first
year or that red shirt seemed to really change life
for you. What did you learn when you have to
sit and watch everybody play?
Speaker 4 (05:28):
Yeah, it was tough.
Speaker 5 (05:29):
I think it was one of the toughest, you know,
years of my life going on playing basketball every single year,
and then you know, you finally get to college and
now you're told you have to sit out a whole
year when you're completely healthy.
Speaker 4 (05:43):
So that was it was.
Speaker 5 (05:44):
It was tough because you want, you know, you want
to play and be out there, and an excitement from
going Division one and you've got your family and friends.
But you know, it was really pretty like halfway through
is where I start to click from me or I
felt myself getting stronger, from myself getting better, where I
was just like, Okay, this is the best thing for me.
(06:05):
But at the beginning it was tough. I was, you know,
I was upset and everything just because I couldn't play.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
I got to set out whole year.
Speaker 5 (06:13):
But obviously grand scheme of things was the best thing
ever happened, and I learned patience has just learned just
with your time, and I just learned just workout habits
like how to how to be a person, to stay
in the gym, how to want to be in a gym,
and all those things.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
So I was just very grateful for that.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
We're talking to Michael Bridges. The next forward NBA champ
is Spike Lee gonna get a championship ring.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
You should for sure.

Okay, how many of these rings are you? Do you
think that James Dolan's going to be handing out a lot.

owner's money. Take me back when James Dolan addressed the
team prior to the playoffs, like he gave you guys
his speech.

Yeah, it was great because you get kind of you know,
he talked to us before, but I know it seemed
like him coming over here was getting outside his comfort
zone a little bit. So I think he's pretty sure,
you know, let the that's why he has Leon Leoni,
you know, get our coaches and let them kind of

talk to the team like that's he kind of let
like the players and the coaches the gym, you know,
over there. And obviously he'll say his words when he
sees us. But I think he got out his comfort
zone for the Packs pretty much that whole year, because
even in the preseason he had a speech, he talked
to us when he was at dinner as a whole team.
It was really cool to see, you know, and I

appreciate you have so much for that. And I gave
him confidence both times, just like you know, I love
the speech, and you can tell I'm a guy I
don't love public speaking that much, and I think he's fine,
but I could tell that it was a little bit
outside his comfort zone.

And I just appreciate Fred because he didn't have to.
You know what I'm saying. He didn't have to, but.
Speaker 5 (08:20):
He did that because he truly believed and he truly
wanted to win for the city.

And you know that's that's that's really dope with him.

I got nicknames that I don't mean. I don't call
myself no nickname or anything. But that was pretty cool.

Because they say a lot of people up on defense.

So it was pretty cool. It was it was. It
was It's not you know, it's a big compliment.

It's a good thing you didn't play when Michael Jordan
played if you had that nickname, because Mike, Mike would
want to tort you.

Yeah, all the fans would bought this pressure on me
to go guard his ass.

And then you were Brooklyn Bridges with the nets.
Speaker 4 (09:38):
Yeah, that was pretty cool.

I like that one too, just it was just easy
means since Yeah, yeah, I appreciate all my times, but
everybody everywhere I was at, all the fans and everything too.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
And then you became known as the five draft picks
guy with the nick. I guess that's not a great
nick that's you don't need a nickname with that. But
are you are? You did your dad? Somebody said you
were putting out a T shirt me.
Speaker 5 (10:10):
I'll think, uh, a lot of fans, even my teammates
and stuff. But out of the five picks thing, I
don't really. Obviously, I'm very grateful and blessed that, you know,
you know, Dolan and LEI did that to get me,
for sure. A lot of people, you know, you're saying
f and picks and stuff, you don't. That's not my

motive when I got there.

So okay, you got to sober up for Thursday. Right,
you're gonna be. You got a little bit of time
in between celebrating. You got to be ready for that
that parade.

remember Gary Payton was known as the Glove and Gary
Payton you know this is now after the fact, but
you know he would talk about Jordan and he gave
Jordan trouble and they asked Michael this, and Michael started laughing.
So he sees the clip. Michael has a tablet and

he he sees, you know, Gary Payton talking about you know,
lock locking Mike up and and this was on the
last dance, and Mike goes, I didn't have any trouble
with the glove, and he started laughing. Really yes, Marvin, I.

Think it was the SPS years ago and Jamie Fox
told Gary Payton there must have been a hole in
that glove.

Billis h Gary Payton was a wonderful on ball defender.
But Mike is like, I, I didn't have any trouble
with the glove. He cackled, Oh no, he got a
really like a legitimate laugh. And like if if Michael
Jordan was playing and he was playing against Mikale Bridges

and everybody was like, Hey, you're gonna be going against
the warden, and Mike would probably go, who's the warden?
McHale Bridges? Why did they call him the warden? Because
he locks people up? And then Mike would probably go,
We'll see about that. Yeah, marvh That's.

Why I always felt back for Ruben Patterson. He was
known as the Kobe stop.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
Kobe's like, really, you've also had Gerald Wilkins, Dominique's brother.
He was known as the Jordan stopper that didn't go well,
Like Mike would make up slights like he didn't have
to make this up. And he hated Dan Marley only

because Jerry Krause the Bulls GM loved Dan Marley and
they ended up going against each other in the NBA
Finals when Dan was in Phoenix and and Marley's one
of the nicest guys. Get it wasn't his fault that
Jerry Krouse would talk about Dan Marley to the bulls

and they were like, they didn't want to hear it
Dan Marley. But Jerry Crouse, by the way, did a
wonderful job as an architect. He was very underrated, very
And then Mike was paired opposite Dan Marley in the
NBA Finals and Mike was taking it to Dan Marley
once again. You can't give Mike any ammo, and here

these guys would give him ammo. It's like, don't say

There's a clip in the Last Dance where a young
Washington Bullets guard named le Bradford Smith supposedly said nice
game to Mike Michael Jordan after La Bradford scored thirty
seven and George had twenty seven. He didn't mean anything
by it, he just said nice game, like you know, hey, Jordan,
I guess chewed on that for a month, went back
a month later and dropped forty seven on the Wizards,

And Jordan even said in the documentary, I think I
created that in my head.

Yes, yeah, poor La Bradford Smith, and he'd probably say, hey, Mike,
nice game, and Mike probably said, oh, I just had
a nice game. Oh okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna show
you a great game. Yeah deal.

If that was anyone other than Michael Jordan would be

you know, to be around that, to see that, and
even to talk to his teammates. Now, I was friends
with Judd Bushler and Steve Kerr, and they were like,
you never want the look. You never want Mike to
give you the look, because that means if you missed

a shot, you're not getting the ball. Mike would give
you the look. And these guys talked about how, you know,
as if it was a horror movie, you know, like
Freddy Krueger, like, you do not want Mike to give
you the look.

Yes, talked about him like he was their dad, daddy.

a personal note, Eddie Handelman died at the age of
eighty nine yesterday. He's probably the godfather of sports talk radio.
He was a legend, certainly in Boston, WEEI and he
did it at a very high rate for over forty years.

I think he was syndicated as well around the country
in some markets. But he had a big influence on me.
Got a chance to meet him. I was trying to
figure out how to do sports talk radio in my
own voice as opposed to doing it in the voice
that I thought I was supposed to have at ESPN.
But he was gregarious. I mean, he was Boston, eighty
(17:40):
nine years of age and well respected. But I think
if you boy, it'd be tough to find somebody who
might have been doing it before him, or certainly in
that size of market. But probably the godfather of sports
talk radio passing away at the age of eighty nine,
I'll sign up for that. Sign it for eighty nine, yes, Mark.

Now I know he's the godfather of sports talk radio.
What's Mike and the Mad Dog? As far as how
it relates to what this has become.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
Well, that's where he had partners on WFAN, and usually
partners who don't have a lot in common tend to
work like myself and Keith Oberman. Now we were only
together for five and a half years. Mike and the
Mad Dog together in New York City and Wfan for
twenty years, and I don't think they had a lot
(18:37):
in common. I don't think that they socialized. But there
was something about magic when two guys got on the air,
and it's kind of like Pardon the Interruption with Mike
and Tony, Like when people talk about, you know, great
teams or great shows like Pardon the Interruption was ahead
of everybody with this. You know, the sports reporters did
(18:58):
have debates going on, and you had really smart sports
writers on there, but Mike and Tony made it a show,
and even the format of that, you know, it was
just different esthetically when you watched it, and they're still
doing it. But you know, when you're looking at great
shows in ESPN history, I mean, Pardon in the Interruption.
(19:21):
Sports Center you got to put it to the side,
but you know, individual shows, Pardon the Interruption that changed
a lot of TV and radio format but Mike and
the Mad Dog. Can't understate how great they were, the
impact that they had. And they went at each other too.
(19:41):
They had a falling out where you know, they disbanded.
They kind of came back together and you know, are
friends now, but had a big impact as well. I
remember listening when Wfan first came on the air, and
I was in my apartment in Brooklyn, and I remember
hearing Jim Lampley and I thought, God, I'd love to
(20:03):
do a sports update on WFAN. Like I was at
CNN at the time, I didn't even think that I
was capable of being a radio host on that level.
And I thought, and I remember talking to somebody and
be like, hey, if they got any openings, and they go, yeah,
but what days could you host? And I go, oh,
(20:25):
I was just talking about doing the sports update and
they're like, oh, no, no, no, you would want to host.
But you know, I lacked a lot of confidence. But
I remember listening and I go, oh, my god, I
can do that. That would be fun. And I've always
I grew up in a radio family and I've always
loved radio. And yeah, you got a face for radio. Yeah,
(20:48):
I know, I've heard it but I just think the
magic of that, and to hear Wfan, I'm thinking, are
they going to do this twenty four hours a day,
seven days a week. It's kind of like Sports Center.
It was like, I can do that. I want to
do that. And meanwhile, I'm sitting in my house off
campus at the University of Dayton. We don't have enough
(21:10):
money for heat. We spent the money on cable, and
I'm thinking, I can do that. You know, I got
my roommates going, yeah, all right, I go no, no,
I can do that, And I don't know, five and
a half years later, I'm doing it. But yeah, roundabout
way Eddie Adelman and for those who heard him, you
(21:32):
knew him. He had that voice and you knew that
that was Eddie. Let's see, I gotta get some phone
calls here, all right, Gerald in Connecticut is back. Hi, Gerald, Hey, Dan,

There's a reason why the buddy you golfed with hit
his fandom because for the longest time before Brunson, the
theme of the Knicks was lineups like this, Kadeen Allen,
Daniene Dotson, Kevin Knox, Luke Cornick and noavonlah and that
was kind of a consistent thing for the Knicks.

Saying that that have been through over these years. I
think James Dolar Redemptions is here, and I think it'll
be a great interview for you and the guys man
because and it was a time when Jake Golden was
considered the worst owner.

In the NBA. He got booed everywhere all the time,
and I would love to know what the niche tak
about him now, especially in New York. And we're fin
the seat is as the years go, because the Knicks
would have been on TV a whole lot thas to
taking the calle All.

Right, Red, You're right, no, they love him now. But
you know, I always find owners who can step to
the side and let people do their jobs, you have
a far better chance of succeeding the Knicks. They had
the same blueprint and they kept repeating the same mistake.
Step aside, let others who are paid to do this

do their job, and you had success because of that.
It's like Cleveland Brown's you got an owner who medals
step to the side and let these people that you
brought in not have to look over their shoulders constantly.
But James Dolan, who would have thought he wasn't just

considered the worst in the NBA, he was considered one
of the worst owners of all time in any of
these sports. Yeah, Paul, I could.

Look back at my notes. We've had segments on his
show before four or five, six years ago if one
fan base could remove an owner to help their team win,
and he would win it.

And just so you know, Fritzy reaches out to everybody.
So somebody says, oh, would you have Brendan Soresby on, Yeah,
we've been reaching out. Would you have James Dolan on? Yes,
I would. He doesn't do interviews. I think Craig Carton
got him recently, and good for Craig. But you know,
James Dolan, things are going well. You know, now you

do want to be interviewed. I think now, I don't
know if he's ready for sixty minutes, but I do
think that you want, you want to have something positive
to talk about. And he even apologized, he said, I'm

the Rangers too, so it's not like it's been like
he's had another team that's had success recently to slough

at like the way we look at theo Epstein. Yeah,
the guy that put the team together that ended the drought.

You said it on a hundred times. If you're an owner,
why not share some credit. He'd rather get half credit
for a title than one hundred percent credit for a failure. No,

sophomore year, he wanted to stay. He got another title.
Devincenzo heart bridges that that tells me an awful lot
about Jalen Brunson. Yes, you do give up money, but

think about taking less so you could make sure the

If somebody had never seen Jalen Brunson play, how would
you describe his style?

Scale, scale, and footwork. That's pretty much and like elite
shot making. So that's how that's my three right there.

And he's not afraid either. No, no, but when did
you notice that? You go back to college and all
of a sudden you knew, okay, there's something different.
Speaker 5 (04:02):
Yeah, when he came in as a freshman, like McDonald's
all American and everything, and he started like he started
as a freshman on our on the championship team. So
you know that, well, coach right with Jay Wright as
a coach, and that's not easy to do. And it
just him go out there fighting every single day in
the summer, the summer sessions and then you know, coming
(04:27):
to the you know, the our first like preseason, he
was just you could just see the skill and the
toughness he.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
Had right away.
Speaker 5 (04:35):
And that's how that's how he started on a championship
team as a freshman.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
H Jay Wright joined us yesterday and coach said that
you guys made fun of Jalen when he was the
preseason n I t m v P and as a freshman,
and you guys were making fun of him that he
was trying too hard to be the m v P,
when according to coach, you guys felt like anybody could
have been the MVP of that preseason and I tea.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (05:04):
Oh, I was a really trip when I was young
at that time too.
Speaker 4 (05:08):
I was just trying to make sure I mess up
on that court. I was really worried about that.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
And he talks about you came in as a skinny
kid and you'd go, you go one on one with
Josh Hart all the time, and that like that first
year or that red shirt seemed to really change life
for you. What did you learn when you have to
sit and watch everybody play?
Speaker 4 (05:28):
Yeah, it was tough.
Speaker 5 (05:29):
I think it was one of the toughest, you know,
years of my life going on playing basketball every single year,
and then you know, you finally get to college and
now you're told you have to sit out a whole
year when you're completely healthy.
Speaker 4 (05:43):
So that was it was.
Speaker 5 (05:44):
It was tough because you want, you know, you want
to play and be out there, and an excitement from
going Division one and you've got your family and friends.
But you know, it was really pretty like halfway through
is where I start to click from me or I
felt myself getting stronger, from myself getting better, where I
was just like, Okay, this is the best thing for me.
(06:05):
But at the beginning it was tough. I was, you know,
I was upset and everything just because I couldn't play.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
I got to set out whole year.
Speaker 5 (06:13):
But obviously grand scheme of things was the best thing
ever happened, and I learned patience has just learned just
with your time, and I just learned just workout habits
like how to how to be a person, to stay
in the gym, how to want to be in a gym,
and all those things.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
So I was just very grateful for that.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
We're talking to Michael Bridges. The next forward NBA champ
is Spike Lee gonna get a championship ring.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
You should for sure.

Okay, how many of these rings are you? Do you

like him coming over here was getting outside his comfort
zone a little bit. So I think he's pretty sure,
you know, let the that's why he has Leon Leoni,
you know, get our coaches and let them kind of

talk to the team like that's he kind of let
like the players and the coaches the gym, you know,
over there. And obviously he'll say his words when he
sees us. But I think he got out his comfort
zone for the Packs pretty much that whole year, because
even in the preseason he had a speech, he talked
to us when he was at dinner as a whole team.
It was really cool to see, you know, and I

appreciate you have so much for that. And I gave
him confidence both times, just like you know, I love
the speech, and you can tell I'm a guy I
don't love public speaking that much, and I think he's fine,
but I could tell that it was a little bit
outside his comfort zone.

And I just appreciate Fred because he didn't have to.
You know what I'm saying. He didn't have to, but.

He did that because he truly believed and he truly
wanted to win for the city.

He was a legend, certainly in Boston, WEEI and he
did it at a very high rate for over forty years.

I think he was syndicated as well around the country
in some markets. But he had a big influence on me.
Got a chance to meet him. I was trying to
figure out how to do sports talk radio in my
own voice as opposed to doing it in the voice
that I thought I was supposed to have at ESPN.
But he was gregarious. I mean, he was Boston, eighty

nine years of age and well respected. But I think
if you boy, it'd be tough to find somebody who
might have been doing it before him, or certainly in
that size of market. But probably the godfather of sports
talk radio passing away at the age of eighty nine,
I'll sign up for that. Sign it for eighty nine, yes, Mark.

Now I know he's the godfather of sports talk radio.
What's Mike and the Mad Dog? As far as how
it relates to what this has become.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
Well, that's where he had partners on WFAN, and usually
partners who don't have a lot in common tend to
work like myself and Keith Oberman. Now we were only
together for five and a half years. Mike and the
Mad Dog together in New York City and Wfan for
twenty years, and I don't think they had a lot
(18:37):
in common. I don't think that they socialized. But there
was something about magic when two guys got on the air,
and it's kind of like Pardon the Interruption with Mike
and Tony, Like when people talk about, you know, great
teams or great shows like Pardon the Interruption was ahead
of everybody with this. You know, the sports reporters did
(18:58):
have debates going on, and you had really smart sports
writers on there, but Mike and Tony made it a show,
and even the format of that, you know, it was
just different esthetically when you watched it, and they're still
doing it. But you know, when you're looking at great
shows in ESPN history, I mean, Pardon in the Interruption.

Sports Center you got to put it to the side,
but you know, individual shows, Pardon the Interruption that changed
a lot of TV and radio format but Mike and
the Mad Dog. Can't understate how great they were, the
impact that they had. And they went at each other too.
(19:41):
They had a falling out where you know, they disbanded.
They kind of came back together and you know, are
friends now, but had a big impact as well. I
remember listening when Wfan first came on the air, and
I was in my apartment in Brooklyn, and I remember
hearing Jim Lampley and I thought, God, I'd love to
(20:03):
do a sports update on WFAN. Like I was at
CNN at the time, I didn't even think that I
was capable of being a radio host on that level.
And I thought, and I remember talking to somebody and
be like, hey, if they got any openings, and they go, yeah,
but what days could you host? And I go, oh,
(20:25):
I was just talking about doing the sports update and
they're like, oh, no, no, no, you would want to host.
But you know, I lacked a lot of confidence. But
I remember listening and I go, oh, my god, I
can do that. That would be fun. And I've always
I grew up in a radio family and I've always
loved radio. And yeah, you got a face for radio. Yeah,
(20:48):
I know, I've heard it but I just think the
magic of that, and to hear Wfan, I'm thinking, are
they going to do this twenty four hours a day,
seven days a week. It's kind of like Sports Center.
It was like, I can do that. I want to
do that. And meanwhile, I'm sitting in my house off
campus at the University of Dayton. We don't have enough
(21:10):
money for heat. We spent the money on cable, and
I'm thinking, I can do that. You know, I got
my roommates going, yeah, all right, I go no, no,
I can do that, And I don't know, five and
a half years later, I'm doing it. But yeah, roundabout
way Eddie Adelman and for those who heard him, you

knew him. He had that voice and you knew that
that was Eddie. Let's see, I gotta get some phone

think about taking less so you could make sure the
