Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Final Hour on this Monday, Dan and the Dan It's
Dan Patrick Show, seating out for today and tomorrow, Dylan
in his share, Fritzi's here, Marv Paully, yours truly, and
the brg's coming up. We'll hear from Patrick Mahomes and
also Steve Sarkisian Texas head coach eight seven seven to
three d P show operator sitting by Tyler. Take your
(00:26):
phone calls and we'll come up on the new poll
question for the final hour of the program. Stat of
the Day is always brought to you by Panini America,
the official trading cards of the program. Make sure you
pick up a calendar or two. Autograph or non autograph
calendar is available while supplies last at Danpatrick dot com.
All right, Dylan, you got the honors here? Final hour
(00:47):
poll question?
Speaker 3 (00:48):
All right, well recap the last hour, Dan, which was simply,
will Lane Kiffen win a title at LSU? Seventy five
percent say no.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
Okay, I'm rooting for the content of it. That either way,
I win, because if he wins a title, we'll talk
about it. If he doesn't win a title and ends
up going to another place. We'll talk about that as well.
What else do you have that would be funny?
Speaker 3 (01:13):
If ls's on the hook for another big buyout in
a couple of years.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
It feels like, I mean, Michigan State just got rid
of their head coach. They're on the hook for what
thirty million dollars? I mean, it feels like, you know, everybody,
every one of these schools that the buyout doesn't seem
that much, but if we fire you, the buyout is
a whole lot. I think Lane Kiffin's buyout at Old
(01:38):
Miss was four million dollars? Is that right, PAULI?
Speaker 4 (01:40):
Yeah, four million they have to pay, you know, Lshu
to Old Miss if they fired him, like you said,
it was thirty six and a half million.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
See why why there is there such a discrepancy between
those two.
Speaker 5 (01:52):
Now?
Speaker 2 (01:52):
I don't understand that, But there's a lot of things
I don't understand about college football. But yes, I still
love college football. That's why I kind of rant against
the system. I rage against the machine because it can
be better, and maybe we just get to the NFL model.
I think we're eventually going to get there. Why don't
we just get there? Okay, then everybody's above board. Coaches
(02:14):
aren't leaving during the season. You know your nil will be,
you'll have your salary cap. You know that. It just
feels like we're headed in that direction. Or I would
love to have an overall commissioner for college football. I
would settle for that right now. Greg Sank Now, Greg
ZANKI doesn't want that headache. But if you had somebody
(02:36):
and you said, all right, you're running college football, or
at least you're running, you're overseeing fifty schools, the main
schools here, then that maybe we could get a path
to sanity here. Yeah, Paul.
Speaker 4 (02:50):
The only thing about and I think everyone agrees with
you that this college football needs more regulations, more guard rules, guardrails,
and structure. But the content provided by the wild West
that is college football is fascinating. You have people at
Ole Missus Airport screaming at Lane Kiffin as he's going
out of town. I'll never forget that video I saw yesterday,
And it's like college football is like that neighborhood die
(03:11):
bar where it smells bad and it's not up to code,
but you don't want them to remodel because it's so entertaining.
It's this weird entertaining and it's the antithesis of the
squeaky clean NFL that's organized.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Eight seven seven to three three DP show email Addressdpadanpatrick
dot com. A couple of phone calls in here, and
I'm looking at these stats first time in NFL history.
Five division races either tied or within a half game
through Week thirteen. Eight teams currently five hundred are better
that missed the playoffs last year. Feels like every year
(03:47):
we look at at least three or four teams who
didn't make the playoffs who then make the plaffs Patriot, Seahawks, Bears, Niners, Jags, Colts, Cowboys,
and the Panthers. Here's Dak Prescot talking about back to
back wins by the Cowboys over the Chiefs and the
Eagles in a span of four days.
Speaker 6 (04:07):
Having to get these wins against two elite teams, I mean,
the two teams that played in the Super Bowl last year.
Speaker 7 (04:12):
Last year is last year.
Speaker 6 (04:13):
But you're talking about two organizations that obviously know how
to win, and we just beat them both in two
great games, as you said, in four days and just
showing the resiliency of this unit. Of this brotherhood on
top of everything that we've been through. Yeah, I don't
know if there's been two more impressive wins, but I
can tell you right now that we're not going to
just sit on some high because of that. We know
(04:34):
he's got a big one coming again next week. And
all this really does for us is just give us
more confidence knowing that we can go play with whoever.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
They lost through the Cardinals and Panthers. I think back
to back weeks and everybody bailed on them. Now, Caroline
is better than what we thought. Just ask the Rams.
But it feels like like, if you're going to say,
would you be surprised if the Giants beat the Patriots,
I wouldn't be because I've come to expect the unexpected.
I don't think there's a great team right now in
(05:03):
the NFL. I think everybody's fallible and on that given day,
if you're playing from west coast to East coast, or
you're playing at night, you're playing on a short work week.
I mean, all of these things factor in the injuries.
Everybody's got injuries, but it's pretty amazing. That's why the
NFL is undefeated. There's always a storyline Zach and Knoxville. Hi, Zach,
(05:25):
what's on your mind today, Adip?
Speaker 8 (05:28):
Thanks for taking my call.
Speaker 9 (05:29):
What's on my mind is that we ended a year
four year streak of losing to that team up north.
So just want to tell the lady that lets two
houses down for me that I know is a Michigan
fan that flip me off Saturday around eleven am. Her
and the whole state of Michigan can suck it. And
do you think Ohio State's an elite team? Since we're
(05:49):
talking about elite teams, do.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
I think what now with the Ohio State oh.
Speaker 10 (05:56):
Are they an elite team?
Speaker 9 (05:57):
I know that they haven't been getting the respect or
talk that that they deserve. I feel like throughout this
whole year, do you think Ohio State's an elite team?
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Yeah? In fact, I said it from the start. I
thought they would be better this year than last year.
And you know, you take care of business against Michigan
at Michigan who came in like and oh, by the way,
what nine and two? But you know Ohio State can
be an elite team.
Speaker 7 (06:21):
Yes, Marmon and Ryan Day off the hot seat. He
doesn't have to win a national title. He just beat Michigan.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
He's all right if he had lost to Michigan against
dust In la I guess what's on your mind?
Speaker 11 (06:36):
Good more than mister Patrick Hope. You and the boys
had a great thing given the weekend. Work for the weekend.
As everyone's been ringing the damn bell all morning, my
Fitftburgh Steelers. You know what, either they got to get
rid of Ourt Smith or I think it's time for
Mike Tumlin to you know, to hit that happy trail,
you know, bomboy eyes. But one of them's got to go.
(06:58):
Best to the weekend. It's kind of like a mood point.
You know, USC goes nine to three, but at the
same time, it's like, you know, nine to three, really
is that really successful? We're going to end up in
like a decent bowl, but we had a higher aspiration
than that. Lincoln Riley, if we're not in the football
playoff next year, it's hot seat for him. Bonus best
(07:19):
of the weekend. Parson Palmer, first year.
Speaker 12 (07:23):
Head coach in high school, goes out and wins that
state football championship in a division where there were two
nationally ranked football teams.
Speaker 11 (07:34):
Congratulations in mister Palmer. You boys have a great week.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
All righty, thank you guys. Kevin in Ohio, Hi cav.
What's on your mind, Darren? How are you good, sir?
Speaker 13 (07:45):
Good listen. I'm kind of curious about your opinion how
the Quick ten officiating crew handled the head budding of
one of the officials by the Michigan player. And do
you feel that that's sending a bad message that you're
not protecting officials in any sport.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
I just want to know what the reasoning was. Was
it accidental? I mean, it's a bad look, bad look,
and it's right there. You can see him, you know,
hitting the official in the nose. But I don't know
if I saw any kind of reasoning behind it. Was
it accidental? Yeah, Paul, I.
Speaker 4 (08:29):
Watched it live and they replayed it, and you always
want to give benefit of a doubt to the player.
But he turns and he was kind of hyped up
and he leans in heard to the ref and I
don't see how it's accidental, and again you want to
give him benefit of the doubt, but it looked like
he was he was getting in his face and he
got a little too close to make contact.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
Yeah, I mean it would have been a penalty. And
I would have, you know, flirted with throwing him out
of the game. But it you know, I needed, I
need to understan ended in the context of how did
it get to that point? You know, was it just
an accident? You know that he got fired up and
(09:08):
he was just leaning in Dane in Texas. I Dane,
what's on your mind today?
Speaker 14 (09:14):
Oh? Good morning, Dan?
Speaker 2 (09:15):
How are you good?
Speaker 7 (09:17):
Sir?
Speaker 14 (09:18):
Yes, I have a poll question. I'd also like your
opinion on this. And this is what event will happen. First,
the NCAA does something about the coaching portal Vegas and
sports books are forced to do something about prop bets
or your last DP show take.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
Care the prop bets that is in the works. And
I'm shocked that it took this long. Prop bets for
college kids terrible, terrible, you know, because that's where, hey,
this isn't a big deal. Nobody's watching this game or
(09:58):
this you know, in this conference. And so what if
I do this, I can make a couple hundred bucks.
That's how it starts. And if you look at eighteen
to twenty four, those are your gamblers. Those are people
who you know the number of people who have a
problem with gambling right there, that is your window way
from home. Might have a credit card. Not a big deal.
(10:21):
This how it starts out. I can speak firsthand Andy
and Denver. Hi, Andy, what's on your mind?
Speaker 15 (10:29):
Oh Dan, I'm so happy to talk to you. Every
time I talk to you, I feel like I'm standing
in front of a statue of square Jot greatness. You're
just fantastic at your.
Speaker 16 (10:42):
Interviews are a lesson.
Speaker 15 (10:46):
To be learned. How you can ask the right question
then just get out of the way. It's always been
impressive to me.
Speaker 10 (10:53):
Anyway.
Speaker 15 (10:54):
I would like your take on the personal foul in
the Broncos game last like fifteen yards for pulling somebody
off of a one pile scrum. It didn't make sense, thoughts.
Speaker 14 (11:07):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
I don't I don't remember seeing that, Todd, did you
do you know the place time?
Speaker 17 (11:16):
I know what was happening while I was on the
plane and I was getting in and out service, but
I saw a blurry image of something, And of course
I'm biased. It looked like that was a little too
egregious by the rets and calling a penalty on that.
And I did read some things saying, if anything, I
should have been on Washington that they caught the wrong
guy during that moment.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
Yeah, sorry, Andy, thank you for the call, But I
don't remember seeing that. There's always going to be moments
because there's so many games that we watch. When you
think about it, and the officials, there are times when
you're watching and you're going, are am I watching the
same game that they're officiating? Because there are times when
I go, this doesn't make sense at all.
Speaker 4 (11:53):
Yeah, Paul, there was a play last night where Marcus
Mariota was rolling right and the defender for the Broncos
kicked his leg out and tripped him and knocked him
on the ground and killed a big play and actually
went they didn't call the penalty or would have been
a first down.
Speaker 18 (12:07):
The ref is like a foot away.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
I mean, he's right there and you and the announcers
trying to be friendly the rest, but right there.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
Who had the best win of the weekend. Let's just
do NFL best win of the weekend. Panthers upsetting the Rams,
Bears over the Eagles, Niners beating the brown snow Jags fucked.
I mean, I would say the Cowboys with two wins
(12:35):
in four days, bills in the way they played against
the Steelers, Bears beating the Eagles, and then college football
Texas over A and m Ohio State winning Dandy over
Tennessee was sneaky good. Miami over pitt it'd say Ohio State,
(13:01):
just because what's attached to that regular season. You gotta
beat Michigan, You're still going to be in the playoffs
and would still be the team to beat the Texas
against A and M. That certainly got my attention. Let's
see Devon and Pittsburgh. Hey Devon, Hey, good morning, Dan.
Speaker 16 (13:21):
How are you saying good? I'm heading in for four kids.
I'm heading in for a second of tomorrow. Why aren't
you gonna run me up real quick.
Speaker 2 (13:32):
To run you? Oh?
Speaker 5 (13:39):
Man?
Speaker 2 (13:40):
Okay, so you're uh, you're going in? And how long
does the process take?
Speaker 16 (13:47):
I have to get another procedure done because I have
a kidney stone, so I'm going in for a two
for one right now. So it should be about a
half hour.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
Damn that kidney stone stuff. No joke, no joke at all, now, Yeah, yeah, yeah,
Well they usually say to me, you got to let
it run its course, and that's not pleasant. But and
you know you'll hear guys saying this is as close
to childbirth as we'll ever get. If that's the case,
(14:16):
the population would be cut in half because we're wimpy.
But hey, Devin, I did a colonoscopy and I did
a hernia surgery. They just flipped me over. I did
that in the same day, So good luck with that.
Speaker 18 (14:30):
Like you're on a spit.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
They just rolled roach history. Yeah, it's like, you know,
chicken and be like, all right, colon, all right, sports Hernia,
Johnny and Riverside, Hey Johnny.
Speaker 19 (14:45):
Good morning fellas, Happy holidays. I just got a quick
rap song for you guys. It goes okay, all right,
here goes Dan Poly Marvin see Insie Fritz bringing you
that real talk. And since that's why I listened to
them real early in the morning, because they're gonna wake
me up while the mother is leading snoring. Thank you,
(15:07):
Let's have a good one.
Speaker 2 (15:08):
Pretty good, Thank you, John, Thank you.
Speaker 18 (15:11):
I like that hitting right.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
Brevity is what we should take away from that, right, Todd.
Speaker 7 (15:18):
Yeah, just get right to the point, keep it tight.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
Yeah yeah, got it.
Speaker 10 (15:21):
Nobody lets them.
Speaker 7 (15:22):
It just rambles on endless week saying a bunch of nothing.
Speaker 2 (15:24):
Jay and Delaware joins us on the program.
Speaker 20 (15:26):
Hi, Jay, Hey Dan, Hey fellows, hope you all had
a great holiday weekend. I was calling real quest for
my best and worst of the weekend. My best is
watch Out and my Niners. They're on a row in
the first time in forty one years that we won
in Cleveland. I was happy. I know Daniel said it
was the Browns, but I was happy to get that
(15:47):
that monkey off of our back. Man that it's been
rough the last few years watching them go in there
and lose off them with this field go or something
like that.
Speaker 12 (15:56):
Uh.
Speaker 20 (15:56):
The second best of the weekend, Kirch Chew is gone
and Swag Party is back. I don't know if you
all saw his little dance in the end there and
doing a Dougie. It was great to see. It was
a good team win in my opinions. And worse of
the weekend. It's just the whole ole miss the vocal.
Completely disappointed in Lane Kiffon's decision. You know, I saw
(16:21):
the documentary like you did, and I saw real joy
on his face during the egg Bowl. But I hate
to say it, I hope that egg Bowl is the
last turpe he wins now that he went to LSU.
Speaker 2 (16:33):
Thank you, Jay, all right, we'll take a break. We'll
talk a little more college football. Penn State still needs
a head coach. Got a few of these coaches that
some are in a playoff playing for their conference championship,
but the coaches have already left the building. We'll have
more on that coming up. Also, more of your phone calls,
best and worst of the weekend each seven to seven
(16:54):
to three d p show. We're back after this.

Speaker 2 (17:37):
More of your phone calls coming up. Andy Staples was
at Ohio State Michigan on Saturday. Will be in Nashville
this weekend and then he'll be attending a first round
college football playoff game. Andy covers college football for on
three Sports. All Right, we had a lot of conversation,
we had a lot of build up, and then we
(17:58):
had the end result with Lane Kiff and leaving to
go to LSU. Do anybody win here? Oh?
Speaker 23 (18:07):
I think LSU feels like they won. They certainly got
the guy they wanted. They got the guy everybody wanted,
because remember Florida wanted him to ole Miss wanted to
keep him, and LSU probably will wind up having the
same defensive staff, which they're very excited about that. Lane
kiffn probably retains those guys. He then comes in and
fixes the offense, and all of a sudden, you got
(18:28):
a team that should be competitive every year to potentially
make the college football Playoff, to potentially.
Speaker 10 (18:33):
Win a national title. Now here's the catch.
Speaker 23 (18:36):
Lane Kiffin had to leave a team that is actually
in the College football Playoff and that is the rub
like you leave for a conference rival. And remember LSU
is a bitter rival of otle Miss. There are some
Ole Miss fans who think LSU's a bigger rival in
Mississippi State. Ole Miss is never gonna let the LSU
coach work for ole Miss, even for a month.
Speaker 2 (18:59):
Well, there are certainly people. There's certainly an analyst that
I saw this weekend who thought, hey, why don't you
let him coach? And I don't think I would not
have him coach my team. If I'm the athletic director
at ole Miss, I'd say, nope, you made your decision.
Go and don't act like you're the victim here. You
can't use leverage that you're going to take coaches in
(19:21):
players if you don't let him coach this team in
the playoffs, as has been reported, I'd say, hey, see
you keep your tray in an upright lock position when
you fly out on that private jet.
Speaker 11 (19:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 23 (19:34):
And then the middle fingers saluting him on the way
out were told you the story, Yeah, ole Miss and
could not let him hold them hostage.
Speaker 10 (19:41):
That was not going to work. It was a non starter.
Speaker 23 (19:44):
There are other situations where coaches are leaving schools, like
John Sumral at Tulane, Eric Morris at North Texas Morris
to go on Oaklham State.
Speaker 10 (19:52):
Sumerrell's going to Florida.
Speaker 23 (19:53):
The winner of their game Friday is playing in the
playoff and the guy who coaches that team will coach
them in the playoff. But it's different when you're going
from North Texas, Okloma State or too late to Florida.
Speaker 10 (20:05):
When you're going from Ole Miss LSU, you can't do it.
Speaker 23 (20:08):
And I found it hilarious that Nick Saban kept saying,
let him coach. Nick Saban fired Lane Kiffin after the
twenty sixteen season. Lane Kiffin takes the Florida Atlantic head
coaching job. He's the Alabama offensive coordinator. He coaches the
Peach Bowl, and between the Peach Bowl and the National
title game, Nick Saban fired his ass.
Speaker 10 (20:29):
And now Nick Saban's like, sure, just let him coach.
What could possibly go wrong? Like, of all the people,
you know what can happen?
Speaker 2 (20:38):
Why were all these analysts? It feels like carrying water
for Lane Kiffin that, hey, he should be able to coach.
I understand that I don't want this to hurt our
seating in the college football playoffs. You know, we ding
teams for losing their quarterbacks. That would be the only
reason why I would say, all right, we'll let you coach,
but only because we don't want we want to host
(21:00):
a playoff game.
Speaker 10 (21:02):
I can't tell you why the game day disc all
did that.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
I can't.
Speaker 23 (21:06):
I mean, my guess is personal relationships with Lane Kiffin,
and they want to cultivate those and keep those healthy. Obviously,
it's a different for Nick Saban since they used to
work together, but for the other guys that look, lane
Kiffin's the most entertaining, polarizing, interesting figure in college football,
and if you work on college football's biggest show, you
want to maintain a good relationship. I suppose that's the
(21:26):
only excuse I can think of, because if they talk
to any athletic directors, and we did, there's not one
who would have let.
Speaker 10 (21:34):
Him coach All Miss through the playoff.
Speaker 23 (21:38):
All right, what's Penn State doing that is a great question.
All I could think of is the judge smail as well.
We're waiting as all the other dominoes were falling. The
only thing I can think of is they've got somebody
in mind who's maybe coaching in a conference championship game
this week and doesn't want to do anything until after
(21:59):
that happens. That's the only thing I can think of,
and that leads you to a few names. So Bob
Chesney is the James Madison coach. And he's a name
that I've been saying for about a month because if
you look at at Chesney's job history, Northeast guy went
D three, D two FCS, FBS successful everywhere, it's kinya
(22:19):
the Kurt Signetti.
Speaker 10 (22:20):
Path, and.
Speaker 23 (22:23):
You'd have thought, okay, from James Madison, his next logical
step is like Syracuse or Boston College. But why would
you have to wait for him to coach Syracuse or
Boston College for two years?
Speaker 10 (22:32):
He would have ended up at.
Speaker 23 (22:33):
Penn State anyway, Like, just get him now. The other
one I thought of, and it's kind of a wild here,
but he's a really good coach, and I think people
just assume he's not movable. Is Colonie Sataki at BYU.
He's at his alma mater, and maybe he's not movable.
Maybe he's just really happy there. But a chance to
coach at an elite of elite programs, that's when I
(22:56):
would certainly talk to him if I were Penn State,
because I think he's an excellent coach. But that's the
only other one in the Championship Games I can think of,
other than maybe Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline.
Speaker 10 (23:07):
Who kind of the Urban Meyer path. He was the
receivers coach.
Speaker 23 (23:11):
He's the OC now, but not really a play caller
in his history, but receivers coach slash ace recruiter and
maybe one of the best recruits in the country and
definitely the best receivers coach in the country.
Speaker 10 (23:22):
I can see him being ready to move up to
coaching job.
Speaker 23 (23:25):
I didn't know if the jump that big would work,
but he's one I would have talked.
Speaker 7 (23:29):
To as well.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
What's the NCAA do with this hiring window? How do
they kind of prevent this?
Speaker 23 (23:38):
Well, there's an easy fix, but the coaches don't want it.
See that's the thing. The coaches like to blame the
NCAA for this stuff. The nc DOUBLEA and well, the
committees that come up with these ideas, they've already come
up with an idea that would work. You bring high
school signing Day back to February where it was just
(23:58):
have one there. You eliminate spring practice. You create an
OTA type system that starts in May in the first
summer term. You move the transfer portal window into the spring,
and players can.
Speaker 10 (24:11):
Leave in April or whatever. The coaches didn't want that.
Speaker 23 (24:14):
The coaches like, I want my team fixed by January
that the coaches want to move between December and January,
the players want to move between December and January two
because that's the semester break. And by the way, the
NCUBA is not changing that because you'd have to move
Christmas and.
Speaker 10 (24:27):
I don't think they're that powerful. So if the.
Speaker 23 (24:31):
Coaches ever want to come around on it, that's fine.
But if they insist that they want their team by January,
then they get to be the villains in this. They
don't get to blame the NCAA for it.
Speaker 2 (24:44):
Yeah, but the current messy system is great for coverage.
It's great for contest.
Speaker 23 (24:49):
It's not though, Dan, as someone who covers this year round.
I listen Ian Rappaport, Hey, you're yelling all the guy.
Ian used to be a college football writer, so he
understands I plight.
Speaker 10 (25:00):
I'm like, I'm like, rap sheet.
Speaker 23 (25:02):
You guys have the best calendar because you have the playoffs,
the Super Bowl, the coaching carousel, free agency, OTAs like
it never stops.
Speaker 10 (25:13):
It's perfect.
Speaker 23 (25:14):
We have all the interesting stuff packed into December. I
had a show yesterday, Dan that would have filled a
month's worth of offseason shows.
Speaker 10 (25:22):
I had to do it an hour and.
Speaker 7 (25:23):
A half talking.
Speaker 2 (25:26):
Andy Staples covers college football for on three Sports. Make
a case for Texas making the playoffs.
Speaker 23 (25:34):
It's tough because they're so far down right now, and
I think, really they're they're aced out. But of the
nine and three teams, they would have the best case.
Speaker 10 (25:43):
And here's why. Look at ten and two Vanderbilt.
Speaker 23 (25:46):
If you're gonna consider ten and two Vanderbilt, consider nine
and three Texas, which beat Vanderbilt head to head, which
has a better best win Texas A and M. And
also can make the complaint that if you don't pick them,
you are discouraging scheduling tough non conference games. Because their
marque non conference game was at Ohio State, which they
lost fourteen to seven. Vanderbilt's marque non conference game was
(26:09):
at Virginia Tech, which they won. If Texas had gone
to Blacksburg, they also would have won. So or Texas
had just scheduled Rice or somebody like that, they would
have won. So if you were to pick the other
team that didn't schedule as hard, then you are discouraging that.
And I don't want that to be discouraged. And I
don't think anybody else does. I want a Texas Ohio
(26:31):
State game to start the season, so if it came
to that, I would hope they would pick Texas. I
think Texas and Vandy unfortunately are kind of boxed out
at this point, so I don't know if it even
comes to that.
Speaker 2 (26:43):
If Arch would come out, do you think he'd be
the number one quarterback taken?
Speaker 10 (26:48):
No? No, I don't. He's got work to do now.
Speaker 23 (26:51):
He can grow into what would be an effective NFL quarterback.
He can grow into a very high draft pick, but
he needs to get that. If you watch even the
A and M game where he played pretty well, he
misses a lot of easy throws still, and those are
throws that NFL quarterbacks don't miss. Those are throws that
Fernando Mendoza Indiana doesn't miss. And Fernando Mendoza is one
(27:14):
that I think the NFL people are going to be
very excited about. He has the prototypical size and you've
seen him in crunch time like at Penn State where
he's making unbelievable throws. That's what they're looking for. Arch
can be that. I'm just not sure he's there yet,
and I imagine his support system is telling him, Hey,
more starts in college can get you there.
Speaker 2 (27:36):
Great to talk to you is always. We'll talk to
you soon. Thank you, Andy, Thanks Dan. That's Andy Staples.
He's fired up. Damn it. We got all this content,
you know, end of November, early December. He's right though.
The NFL has it, you know, they got it down.
They can tell a story, and in this month we
(27:56):
tell this story. In this month, we tell this story.
College football is like here there it goes. See if
you can digest this. Andy covers college football for on
three Sports. David Cincinnati, Hi Dave, what's on your mind today?
Speaker 24 (28:10):
Hey Dan? It is a pleasure to talk to you guys. Yeah.
Best of the weekend was well, all I have for
my Browns is there. At least Miles got a sack
this weekend. That's my best. Worst of the weekend is
what's been the worst the last few weekends is not.
Speaker 8 (28:25):
Here hearing.
Speaker 24 (28:29):
The song the Refrain Marvin singing the refrain of the
I don't want to work That sets my weekend on fire.
So I got to hear that this week and the
laning thing. I've been in the industry for about thirty
plus years and It's amazing to me that when speaks
(28:50):
to people, he never calls him to a smaller church
or a smaller school.
Speaker 2 (28:57):
Thank you, Dave. I do just know he's that he
talked to God, and I swear I thought he was
talking about Nick Saban, and then he mentioned Nick Saban,
and then I realized that he actually is telling us
he had a conversation with God. Like, you can't argue
criticize that, can you. Now you think about it, Hey,
why did you go? God told me? Okay, you got me.
Speaker 4 (29:19):
Yeah, Pauline, It's just you look at a guy like him,
and he was so embraced at ole Miss and we
brought up Mark Few from Gonzaga before. I'm sure Mark
few years ago got tons of big offers, but well UCLA, yeah,
I mean that's as big as it gets in college
basketball history. And but he stayed and got them really
really close that they get it all done. No, but
(29:40):
they're going to build a statue out there, and he's
a legend in the community, and I don't know that's
almost as good as winning a title someplace when on
your fifth stop.
Speaker 2 (29:48):
Lane isn't wired that way. Yep, he's not.
Speaker 7 (29:51):
He's not.
Speaker 2 (29:52):
And and once again everybody's like, oh, you know you
would take another job.
Speaker 7 (29:57):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (29:58):
When I was at ESPN, Mike contract was up. I
had two weeks left, and I said I was going
to leave, and I said, but I would like to
do two weeks of radio. So you know, I could
say thanks to the affiliates who carried the show, and
they were like, Nope, not going to They started to
let me do that, and then they're like no, And
I understood it.
Speaker 7 (30:18):
I was leaving.
Speaker 2 (30:20):
You're at the door, and I was out the door.
So I don't begrudge Lane Kiffin for finding a better job.
I have a problem with how he found his better
job and so and I think college football can fix
this if college football wants to fix this. Alex in Wisconsin,
Hi Alex, what's on your mind?
Speaker 13 (30:42):
Best of the weekend?
Speaker 16 (30:43):
Dan shout out D three football. UW River Falls get
in their school record ten point this weekend in the
first round of the D three football playoffs.
Speaker 2 (30:51):
Appreciate it all right, Thank you, Alex. I love D three,
I love watching D three football. Josh and Iowa, Hi Josh.
Speaker 22 (31:02):
Hey guys, thanks for having me on first time, long
time four to seven three seventy six.
Speaker 2 (31:09):
Chisel, No, come on, Josh, You're better than that.
Speaker 11 (31:15):
Yep.
Speaker 22 (31:16):
Best of the weekend is the Cowboys finishing off both
Super Bowl teams in four days. Whoo, we're going to
the super Bowl, It's guaranteed. Worst of the weekend was
this fourteen inches of snow.
Speaker 24 (31:27):
We got in Iowa.
Speaker 22 (31:29):
Pretty brutal. I guess that's just a regular week in
Buffalo though. That's all the time I have for today, fellows,
until next time.
Speaker 2 (31:36):
Thank you, Josh, Nate and Philly Hi Nate. Best and
worst of the weekend.
Speaker 8 (31:42):
First time Long time sixty five put me in coach
so a popular thing in South Africa instead of saying
how are you? Is are you winning? Which brings me
to the sorry app sixers now to be on the
same page book, same story. I started my journey when
(32:03):
Jared rock Bottom Bayless in twenty sixteen was the starting
point guard. So I've seen the rise and fall of
marcl Foltz, the riving Paul of Ben Simmons, and now
you see Shane Joe Joel indeed, and I see you
hired their nerves when we clearly need a doctor. And uh,
you know at the Hotiday is coming up. My nephew
is a big into basketball, and if we want, take
(32:25):
him the Sixers game. But I'm not sure they deserve
him as a fan. But everything that's been going.
Speaker 2 (32:30):
On, all right, Well, thank you, Dan, thank you. They
just gave up one hundred and forty two points to Atlanta.
Speaker 18 (32:40):
Just like one hundred and eighty points.
Speaker 2 (32:42):
That's a mess. That's that's a mess. Has Paul George
played playoff piece?
Speaker 18 (32:48):
I got five games so far?
Speaker 2 (32:51):
All right, he's got to be exhausted.
Speaker 4 (32:56):
But okay, but if you're if you're a Sixers fan,
you got Maxy bj Edgecumbe.
Speaker 18 (33:01):
Got a great backcourt there. They're not the worst situation,
not even close to the worst, I don't think.
Speaker 2 (33:06):
Yeah, but in bead'll never be what he once was
Paul George. It's not good, yes, Marvin.
Speaker 7 (33:14):
Yeah, that's one of those.
Speaker 25 (33:15):
On paper, man, they look like a contender in the East,
but in reality and B's not gonna play.
Speaker 7 (33:21):
Paul George might play, and.
Speaker 25 (33:22):
They were making eighty nine good jillion dollars a year
between the two of them, so no good.
Speaker 2 (33:28):
Yeah, I had a guy who bets a lot in Vegas.
He says, hey, I know you don't gamble anymore. But
if you do, here's my best bet NBA. So I
leaned closer as he's telling me this, and he goes
the sixers. I go the sixers what? And he goes
sixers NBA title. I go, what year are we talking about?
(33:53):
I was like, Uh, that doesn't sound like a good bet,
not at all.
Speaker 3 (34:00):
Can trust the process though?
Speaker 2 (34:02):
Yes he does. All right, that's it. Last call for
phone calls? What we learn? What's in store tomorrow? Right
after this?
Speaker 1 (34:11):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at Foxsports Radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to
listen live.
Speaker 2 (34:23):
Last call for phone calls? What we learn? What's in
store tomorrow. I've been looking for the numbers on Lane
Kiffin's deal with LSU, and here it is seven years,
ninety one million dollars. The termination fee do ole Miss
is covered by LSU. Lane doesn't have to pay that.
LSU will pay Lane Kiffin any incentives that he would
(34:44):
have earned based on how ole Miss does in the
college football playoffs. So you're saying, if if old Miss
keeps winning, Lane gets paid for their wins. That's what
I'm told. Wow, ls LSU, this is, according to a source,
will pay Lane Kiffin any incentives that he would have
(35:04):
earned based on how Old Miss does in the college
football playoffs. If he wins the SEC title, he gets
a million dollars. If he wins the SEC title in
the national title, he gets four million dollars. If he
wins a national title, his pay is automatically adjusted to
be the highest paid coach in college football. If he's
(35:28):
terminated without cause, eighty percent of his contract balance is due,
and they're paying Brian Kelly ninety percent all in addition
to the fifty four million they're paying to Brian Kelly
over the next six years.
Speaker 18 (35:43):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (35:45):
So if Old Miss wins a couple of these playoff games,
then Lane Kiffin gets paid by LSU. According to my source,
should have gone into coaching. Actually, no, no way, no way.
If I was coaching, it would be probably grade school.
(36:08):
Even high school's a mess.
Speaker 4 (36:10):
Now, Yes, Paulie, I'm looking at some of these escalators
in contracts from different head coaches. I can't find one
to ever have that if you win the national title
going forward in your contract, you must be the highest
paid head coach in the country. That's a biggie, but
again it's worth it. If he wins the national title
in the year two, they'll be glad to give him
a raise.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
Yeah. Now, once again, this is according to my source
that however Old Miss does in the college football playoffs,
whatever incentives that he was going to get from Old
Miss LSU will pay him.
Speaker 4 (36:43):
Yeah, Pauline, you know if we do have coach Kiffen
on the next few days, any chance. I love those
Old Miss colors. I would love if he could send
a box full of his old stuff over. Those are
great college about his size.
Speaker 2 (36:54):
If he hasn't sent those, he's probably not going back
to pack that up, I would say, somebody else is.
It's like when Brian Kelly sent us that care package,
and I think Fritzy was the only one who could
wear the Brian Kelly stuff.
Speaker 17 (37:07):
Wow, I got a nice little closet there via exl
Brian Kelly Notre Dame stuff.
Speaker 2 (37:11):
Love it fit me like a glove too. Yeah, back
row Manny in Dayton, Hi, Manny, Best and Worst of
the weekend.
Speaker 26 (37:19):
Hey mister Patrick, how are you guys?
Speaker 2 (37:22):
Great?
Speaker 5 (37:24):
Great second time caller, longtime listener, Best and worst of
the weekend, not enough love, no fun intended given for
my packers after the wig.
Speaker 24 (37:36):
And the worst of the.
Speaker 26 (37:37):
Weekend, the cry baby Bears ending up in first place.
And also I had tied to the face bet with
Paully that my packers will end up having a better
record than the Bears.
Speaker 2 (37:55):
Oh, we're making the bet now that the Packers will
end up with a better record than the Bears. Is
that what we're saying, Paul many, Is that what you're saying? Okay,
all right, Paul, do you want a piece of Manny
and his Packers?
Speaker 4 (38:09):
I do, because the Bears could lose to the Packers,
but because of that tie that the Packers have, that
could be the difference.
Speaker 18 (38:16):
So I will take that as a Bears guy.
Speaker 2 (38:18):
All right, pie to the face? All right, Manny, thank you, Yes, Dylan.
Speaker 3 (38:23):
I was just thinking about something from earlier. We could
start the coaches that have gone to LSU Graveyard of
gear from their previous school. Since we already have the
Brian Kelly, Steph will get Lane's Whoever's next, which will
probably be a few years.
Speaker 2 (38:35):
Okay, I can't help but think of that game tonight.
Drake May is second in the odds to win the MVP. Now,
if he plays really well tonight, he'll probably move past
Matthew Stafford based off of playing well standalone game. Matthew
Stafford had not a great game against Carolina, and I
(38:57):
can't help but think of Mike Brabel in New England
and look at the mess that the Tennessee Titans are.
Speaker 25 (39:02):
Yes, Marvin, this Drake May Matthew Stafford MVP situation might
be like Chris Paul Kobe Bryant in like two thousand
and eight, where somebody's having a better season, but you
can't you can't go without an MVP.
Speaker 7 (39:15):
For Matthew Stafford, this is his year.
Speaker 2 (39:18):
It feels that way.
Speaker 7 (39:19):
Yeah, just a narrative alone.
Speaker 2 (39:22):
Yeah, but the Patriots are a great story at ten
and two. Yes, Paul, I'm on team Marvin with this
one because I think Drake May is gonna get the well,
he's gonna have a lot more chances to win the MVP.
Matthew Stafford this is it, this is his year, I think. Okay, yeah,
MVP Odd's Matthew Stafford plus one oh five, Drake May
plus one twenty and that's it because then it goes
(39:44):
to Dak Prescott plus eleven hundred. This day in sports history,
Paul I.
Speaker 18 (39:51):
Got a couple for you, Dan.
Speaker 4 (39:52):
These are oh nineteen sixty four, the Houston Cult forty
five's change her name to the Astros. Seattle As awarded
the American League franchise. Wilt Chamberlain in nineteen sixty seven
had an NBA game where he missed twenty two free throws.
In nineteen eighty four, this was a great one. Doug
Flutie of Boston College won the fiftieth Heisman Trophy.
Speaker 2 (40:15):
Wilt missed twenty two free throws, which still scored fifty
two points.
Speaker 18 (40:20):
Can you imagine how we cover that today?
Speaker 2 (40:24):
Also on this day, Latrelle Spree well choked. PJ. Carlissimo
got a ten game suspension.
Speaker 11 (40:31):
That was it.
Speaker 2 (40:32):
If that happened today, you're gone for the season. Todd,
what did you learn today?
Speaker 17 (40:38):
There should be a contract whereby if you leave one
school to coach another, it'll cost you X amount of
dollars per coach and player you try and poach.
Speaker 2 (40:46):
Dylan, what'd you learn today?
Speaker 3 (40:47):
You have a day with Bill Kawer in a month butterflies.
Speaker 2 (40:50):
Yeah, I know, I don't know what we're doing, but
we done a date.
Speaker 7 (40:53):
Marvin Fritzy actually went sight seeing on a trip.
Speaker 2 (40:57):
Yes, got out of the hotel. Hotel paul Would you learn.
Speaker 18 (41:01):
Bill Cower once shaved his mustache.
Speaker 2 (41:04):
For Fritzie Dylan, Marv, Paulie yours truly in the back room. Guys,
have a great day, everybody. We'll talk to you tomorrow
