Is TNT back with the NBA. The headlines are deceiving.

(00:32):
We'll sift through that and give you what is really happening.
If TNT is going to be back with the NBA.
US men hold off Germany ninety two to eighty eight,
So much for that, Well, that was a scare that'll
never happen again. After barely getting by South Sudan. Germany's
a good team, but still you're winning by four points.

(00:54):
This is an extremely talented US team, and I know
the rest of the world is caught up to the state,
certainly with men's basketball ninety two to eighty eight squeaking
by Germany, and who would have thought Team USA's best
player is going to be the flag bearer. Here is
the head coach of the German team, Gordon Herbert, talking

(01:17):
about Lebron.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
First quarter. They had us back on our heels. You know,
we had a tough first quarter. I thought we regrouped
some in the second quarter. I thought the third quarter
we played our best basketball.

Speaker 4 (01:36):
We played.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
It was good Temple and yeah, and somebody named Lebron
James made some pretty good plays at the end.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Their go to guys, Lebron James. You know it's one
of those Well, who's going to take the last shot?
Remember Anthony Edwards a couple of weeks ago. Hey, I'm
the number one option. Yeah, maybe not. Maybe it's Lebron.
Game on the lad Go to Lebron and you advance
eighty two or ninety two to eighty eight. By the way,
congratulations to the Miami Heat beating Memphis in overtime. Believe yeah,

(02:13):
Heat culture culture, Heat culture, Summer League title, winning it
in overtime. Also paulyy check on the parade in Miami.
Absolutely all right. Also a banner I would imagine. Yes,
I see pat Riley finally wins something. So that's good,
all right? Thank you, Tod Joe Burrow's been cleared to practice,
and Jordan Love is holding a hold in. This would

(02:36):
be a love in because he's going to meetings. He's
there with the team, but he's holding out for more money.
So we will talk about that coming up. Good morning.

(03:19):
The Jordan Love situation is interesting because he finally got
an opportunity. He was sitting for a while and now
you got to pay him. The question is when do
you pay? We go back to the Dallas Cowboys with
Dak Prescott. Jerry Jones is a billionaire a few times over,
but sometimes doesn't seem like a great businessman when it

(03:40):
comes to contracts, certainly for Dak Prescott. The longer you wait,
the more it costs you. Unless one of the sides
is not convinced that they want to continue with this relationship.
Does Dak want to continue this relationship?

Speaker 5 (03:56):
Now?

Speaker 2 (03:57):
He makes a lot of money off the field because
he's the Dallas Cowboy quarterback. If he was Carolina's quarterback,
no one would care. He's the Cowboys quarterback. He's going
to make a lot of money. And the money that
he'll make, you know, in endorsements, will probably be similar
to what Mahomes makes with the Kansas City Chiefs. But
we keep pushing the can, kicking the can down the

(04:18):
road here and eventually, Dak Prescott, you just play the
waiting game. Unless they're going to let him just play now,
they can't, you know, franchise him. So they're kind of
stuck in this situation unless Dak goes. You know what,
maybe I'll go someplace else. Maybe I don't want to
deal with the bright lights of the Cowboys where everything
is scrutinized. Maybe I would think that Jerry is going

(04:41):
to eventually pay him. The question is do you just
pay him now? What if you had paid him two
months ago? You know, because everybody else getting their money.
So Jordan Love is going to make more than Trevor
Lawrence because he's next up. He's going to make more.
And then two is waiting. I mean, this is how
the is played. And then Dak is going to be waiting.

(05:03):
It's inflation. It's quarterback inflation. You're going to have to
pay that. Green Bay Packers are in a great situation
from the standpoint of maybe they found their next franchise quarterback.
So if you get forty years of great quarterback play,
how many other franchises can say that. Now, they didn't

(05:24):
get as many Super Bowls as you would expect over
that time period. But Jordan Love was great last year.
Do you go all in on somebody that, Okay, he
was great for one year. I'm always hesitant because I've
seen a lot a lot of these quarterbacks that are like, wow,
that guy's good. I mean, Mac Jones was good in
New England. They went to the playoffs. I mean that's

(05:49):
the thing. How long do you wait before you go Okay,
I've seen enough. Have you seen enough with two of them.
How much will be enough with brock Perdy, Because there's
either you like your quarterback and you give him fifty million,
or you don't and then you move on from him.
There's no middle ground, unless it's like Baker Mayfield, who
had bounced around and then he found kind of a

(06:10):
sweet spot there. That's sort of what you're looking at
with these quarterbacks. You either love them or you're going
to let them go. But if you keep them and
you love them, they're going to continue to cost you
and it keeps you know, it's the meter is running here.
And with Jordan Love, have they seen enough they sold
on him? Was last year just the start of something?

(06:33):
Was it an aberration? Do they need to see a
little bit more? Packers GM Brian Gudukunst. We're very down.

Speaker 6 (06:41):
The road as far as we know that he's our
franchise quarterback and then we're ready to move forward. That's
not it's not like we're trying to make that decision.
But at the same time, we want to put the
best team around them we can and we want to
make sure that you know, there's certainly the structure of
it so that we can do what we need to
do for our football team moving forward, not only.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
This year, but years to come.

Speaker 6 (06:59):
Is a very very important Again, like I said, it's
this is just part of it, not unexpected and will
work to get it done. And you know, hopefully he
won't miss too much time.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
Because it is you know, we got a lot of
work to do.

Speaker 6 (07:11):
You know, we think we have a very good football team,
but we got to come together as a team and
he's a big part of that. So him being out
there is important for us.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
He's twenty five years of age. Now it's a cautionary tale.
You could look at Carson Wentz with the Eagles, Jared
Goff with the Rams. I mean, Jared Goff had a
one hundred and thirty five million dollar contract extension. He
averaged twenty one touchdowns and fourteen and a half interceptions
over the next two seasons. Well, LA wanted to get
rid of him so badly they attached two first round

(07:40):
picks in order to offload his contract in a deal
that brought Matthew Stafford to the Rams. So it did
work out, but teams extending their quarterbacks and you're not
quite sure. Now, Jared Goff has played well with Detroit.
Carson Wentz is a backup with the Kansas City chiefs Now.
I know he had the knee injury against the Rams.
He was never the same quarterback. You see it, it happens,

(08:03):
it's magic, and then all of a sudden you go,
is it real? Is what I'm seeing real? Is it sustainable?

Speaker 4 (08:10):
Here?

Speaker 2 (08:10):
That is going to be the question for a lot
of these gms. Caleb Williams down the road, when do
you see it? He's going to be the starter from
day one? And then when do you go, Like you know,
when Denver traded for Russell Wilson, and you keep thinking,
what were they seeing? They had to see something we
didn't see because Russ Diminishing returns here Seattle was happy

(08:34):
to get rid of it, and one of the great
deals in NFL history. And then all of a sudden
he gets to Denver and it says if he forgot
how to play the game. Now he's in Pittsburgh and
he'll probably hold on for dear life for the starting
job there. It happens quickly. Success does, and so does failure.
And if you're going to give somebody fifty million a

(08:55):
year for five years, you're tying up and that most
of the time, a lot of it's garon. So you
have to be right because if not at that position,
it's devastating. And Brian Goudakunz is talking about the roster.
You fill in the roster. You want to like what
the Bears did with Caleb Williams. They very few quarterbacks

(09:15):
number one picks have gone into a situation where you
have that much talent that Caleb Williams has. So he's
got an all Pro wide receiver. He's got another receiver,
Roma Dunza, who might be an All Pro wide receiver.
You got a good tight end. They bolstered the offensive line,
you know. They My big question mark will be, you know,

(09:36):
the consistency with coaching, offensive coordinator, those kind of things.
But Caleb Williams looks like he's ready to go. But
Bryce Young they did not. There was there was no
infrastructure there for Bryce Young in Carolina and he was exposed.
If you know, the roles were reversed and I put
Bryce Young in Chicago and Caleb Williams in Carolina, Bryce

(09:56):
Young would probably succeed. It comes down to that. It's
that tricky. It's just like Mahomes with Kansas City. He
went into an ideal situation. You got to watch for
a year and then take over a team that was
really good and you got a Hall of Fame coach.
You stumble into Tyreek Hill, you find out that Travis
Kelce is the best tight end in football. Like that's

(10:20):
the magic with all of this. There have been guys
who have come into the league where I go, that
guy is going to be great. David Klingler, he was
unbelievable in college, went to the Bengals. You probably have
no idea who I'm talking about, but they weren't ready,
The team wasn't great, and he didn't live up to

(10:41):
the billing. Tim Couch. Tim Couch number one pick and
I thought, okay, he's a really good pocket passer and
then went to a bad organization. That's the tricky part
of all of this is Dallas a great organization. You know,
do you want? Is Dak going to be the difference?
You don't even have Ceedee Lammermikah Parsons. These contract negotiations,

(11:01):
when you talk about distractions, distractions to me are contracts,
playing time, what goes on in the locker room. I
don't look at Travis Kelcey dating Taylor Swift as a distraction. Now,
once he drops a big pass in a game against
Buffalo and he had just gone to her concert, then
it'll be a big deal because we'll make it a

(11:23):
big deal. But Rashid Rice racing cars, that's a bigger deal,
Harrison Butker's comments at a commencement speech that became a
big deal. Isaiah bugs with cruelty to animals. Those are distractions.
Those are big, bigger deals and contracts. It's what you're

(11:46):
getting paid. Are you a leader when you go into
the locker room, do guys begrudge the fact that you're
making a certain amount of money. You got a situation
with the Jets, Now that's a distraction. Aaron Rodgers doesn't
show up and makes it seem like, hey, that's not
a big deal. It is a big deal. It is,
and it really was an embarrassing situation because all you

(12:08):
have to do is check with your coach, and you
weren't playing, so he had no distractions. To plan your
vacation over the summer, all you have to do is say, coach,
when is off season workouts? When's mandatory camp? Okay, I'm
planning on a trip to Egypt. That's called being respectful
to your coach, and Aaron Rodgers was not. So your

(12:29):
coach has to get in front of the media and go,
uh yeah, it's an excuse, an unexcused absence, like it
can't happen. You did nothing the year before you get hurt.
You should be all in. Remember we're all in and
you're not all in. Those are distractions. Now you got
Hussan Reddick, who they just they traded to get him

(12:50):
from the Eagles, and I would think the first thing
you do when you trade for somebody you make sure
they're going to sign. Because he wasn't going to sign
with the Eagles. He wanted a certain amount of money.
Now you get him, and now he's holding out. Those
are distractions and that's what you have to be aware
of contract situations. With the Cowboys, Jordan Love is at

(13:13):
least there with the team at the meetings. That's really important.
And by most accounts, his teammates are probably saying, hey,
you know what, he deserves more money. He's going to
get a lot more money. But we do get into
the distraction part of the equation. Now, now into August distractions,

(13:34):
you who's going to start. I don't know if it's
a distraction in Pittsburgh. Do the players then realize that
maybe Russell Wilson is not the starter, shouldn't be the starter,
but he is the starter. These are tricky things. These
are tricky times. So when the season starts, that's when
it's different. Distractions. Now, these are contracts, guys getting paid,

(13:58):
wanting to get paid, wanting it more. I mean CD
Lamb and Michael Parsons, they're at the you know, the
top of the food group here at their position. They're
both Mike's going to get thirty million, CD's gonna get
twenty five million, maybe more, and then you got Dak.
So you're going to tie yourself up. And we said

(14:20):
this last season during the season, I said, the Cowboys
have a situation that's going to be a really big problem.
But it's a good problem to have from the standpoint
of you have an elite quarterback, an elite wide receiver,
and an elite defensive player, and they're all going to
cost you when you draft. If you say, hey, I

(14:41):
got a guy who's going to be MVP candidate. I
got a wide receiver's top five, and I might have
the best defensive player in football. All the headaches we've
got because you got to pay them. Yes, Marvin, with.

Speaker 1 (14:54):
The holdouts, is it always the agent's idea to hold
out or hold in?

Speaker 2 (14:58):
In Jordan Love's case, I don't know. I mean, who's
holding out. Hassan Reddick is, but I'm guessing that he
has a certain amount of money that he wants to make.
But quarterbacks, I mean two is not holding out. Trevor
Lawrence didn't threaten Rock Purty, Joe Burrow justin Herbert Well,
I mean, I mean Lamar, they were gonna leave him open.

(15:24):
See that's another thing. When John Harball says this guy
could be the greatest quarterback of all time, you were
willing to let him go for two first round draft picks,
And I kept saying, Atlanta, go get him, go get him,
and then he becomes MVP. So I was thinking about
that last night. Man, this guy love him, vision down

(15:44):
the road, greatest quarterback of all time, But you could
have had him for two first round draft up to
a point.

And that's why we have a brand new podcast called
over Promised. You see, we're having so much fun in
our two hour show. We never get to everything, honestly,
because this guy is over promising things we never have
time for. Yeah, you blubber list lame me.

Speaker 7 (16:25):

be good at it because you've been over promising women
for years.

Well, it's a Cavino and Rich after show, and we
want you to be a part of it. We're gonna

Cadino and Rich on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or

Speaker 2 (17:05):
One of our favorites. He's Chase Daniel, former NFL quarterback
and he started something with Diana Russini co hosting the
Athletic Scoop City podcast and taking listeners inside the NFL
framework and explaining not just what happened, but how and why.
We saw this. We saw this before everybody else did,

(17:26):
and we said, Chase, go out there, be a star
and look at him. It's like you know when your
son or daughter starts to walk and you're so proud.
Look at Chase Daniel learning how to walk in the
podcast world. Congratulations Chase, thank you.

Speaker 9 (17:42):
I appreciate it that coming from you, that that means
a lot. Really enjoyed all my hits on your show.
And yeah, man, this podcast is off to a really
good start. We just had Andy Reid on for the
first episode. Steven Jones was on talking about the Cowboys
and Dak and today go check got the YouTube page,
Go check out our podcast page because we have an

(18:03):
exclusive forty five minute long interview with Sakuon Barkley where
he tells us his side of the story. Everyone's seen
the Giant side play out on Hard Knocks, so it
was really really cool to see Diana was able to
go to his house, sit down with him on his couch,
and really just hash out everything.

Speaker 4 (18:21):
So it's it's pretty enlightening.

Speaker 2 (18:23):
You think the Giant's gonna regret this?

Speaker 4 (18:26):
I do?

Speaker 5 (18:26):
I do.

Speaker 9 (18:27):
I think at the end of the day, because he
is such a polarizing player and because he's one of
the faces of the NFL and one of the best
players in the league. This played out, this negotiation process
played out in front of America. And so what's really
interesting in the interview is that Saquan says they only

(18:47):
talked twice, and so that's sort of par for the
course for some of these big businesses and these NFL teams,
Like it's just what happens. So it's business. I think
Joe Shay had a number. He didn't want to go
past the number. Saquon thought he was worth more. Saquon
wanted to retire a Giant. That's the biggest takeaway on this.

(19:08):
He wanted to retire a Giant. But now he is
re energized and rejuvenated now that he's in Philly with
that roster, so I think he's still got some good
years left.

Speaker 2 (19:17):
It was embarrassing what the giants did. It'd be like
if you said to your wife, man, I love you,
but why don't you go out and see if there's
something a little bit better? But hey, I want to
be married to you for the rest of my life.
Once you let the person out the door, you're not
you don't want them back. And I'm just watching them
give lip service. And even Saquon told Diana, hey, there

(19:39):
was no way I'm coming back after Yeah, you say
something like that. And it comes down to this, though, Chase,
you compound one mistake with another one because they gave
Danny Dimes the money he really needs Saquon Barkley, So
now you're going to take away Saquon Barkley and you
still got Danny Dimes. So you made two mistakes here,

(20:02):
and I it's to me inexcusable.

Speaker 9 (20:05):
It was so fascinating to hear Saquon talk about this
whole process because a lot of people are like, oh,
this happened in free agency and that was over. Saquon
really goes in depth about the franchise tag situation last
year and when he thought he said they had all
the leverage at that point in time, I believe and
he believes, that was probably the time that it was

(20:28):
over because he just knew he wasn't going to get
twelve twelve and a half million dollars from the Giants.
And that Dan is why the NFL players hate the
franchise tag. They want long term security, they want long
term deals. The NFLPA has been trying to get rid
of franchise tags forever. Now it only happens to seven

(20:48):
to eight guys a year, but it's the star players
that deserve like a lot more. He wanted to retire
a Giant and it's just like in Hard Knocks, Joe
made the comment.

Speaker 4 (20:59):
Joe Shane made the comments saying.

Speaker 9 (21:01):
It took ten years off Joe's life. Sakon was like,
if it took ten years off of your life, think
about what happened to my life. So that's just part
for the course on thinking for these gms, they have
a set number. Joe Shane decided to go with offensive
line rather than running back. You know, they got Molik
neighbors I personally think the Giant should have traded up
for a quarterback. I don't know if Danny Dimes is

(21:23):
the answer. So they got some issues there. I'm concerned
about that team.

Speaker 2 (21:26):
Oh, they they were trying to trade up for a quarterback.
They were trying to trade up for a couple of
them speaking to quarterbacks. Explain what Jordan Love is doing
with his love in where he's going to all the meetings.
He's just not going to be participating until he gets
a contract offer extension, even though the Packers do have
the leverage that he is under contract.

Speaker 9 (21:48):
Well, I mean I would hold in too. That's the
new fancy thing to do. You can't hold out because
you're getting fine. These players have gotten smarter with his
new CBA say, I'm going to be here, I'm going
to be in meetings. I don't have to practice. I
don't want to practice. I want to get a deal done.
But he made He's making ten and a half base
salary this year, ten and a half million dollars. I
would hold in too. The dude is worth in my opinion,

(22:10):
and you're gonna see probably the highest paid contract to
a player in NFL history. You're looking at starting at
fifty five million dollars average per year, It's gonna be
an extension. Diana's got ears on the ground there. My
thing is like, how in the world you had all
summer for the Packers. How in the world this is
not done yet. I don't think him missing practice is

(22:32):
a big deal, But knowing him and working out with
Jordan Love this offseason, he wanted it done. He doesn't
want to miss one day, one walk through, one rep.
You got Michael Pratt from Tulane taking the reps now,
So it's just it's unfortunate if I was his agent,
and I've been a part of a lot of these
conversations in terms of having quarterbacks on teams get paid.

Speaker 4 (22:56):
These agents should.

Speaker 9 (22:57):
Be on the ground fighting tooth and nail for their
agent to get it done. I don't know if his
agent is there in person, but how about the Packers man.

Speaker 4 (23:08):
You go from.

Speaker 9 (23:09):
Farv to Rogers to Jordan Love like it is, and
you look at the Cleveland Browns franchise. There's like thirty
quarterbacks in that timeframe, so they know what to do
when they are definitely scouting quarterbacks.

Speaker 2 (23:22):
Okay, you worked out with Jordan Love in the off season.

Speaker 4 (23:25):
I did, I'm not coming back. I'm not coming back.

Speaker 10 (23:27):
It was more like Cardio, okay, Cardio, yeah, okay, What
is it that you see with him that makes him
worthy of fifty five men?

Speaker 4 (23:38):
Like?

Speaker 2 (23:38):
Have you seen enough of him? A lot of times?
We need to see two seasons of football, not just one.
We don't get that luxury if you're the Packers. What
makes him an elite quarterback?

Speaker 4 (23:49):
You look at when they started three and three last year,
him and Lafloor, the head coach, they were not on
the same page about what that offense needed to look like,
and quite frankly, they had a lot.

Speaker 9 (24:00):
They were the youngest offensive roster in the NFL last year,
including Jordan Love first year. He was able to sit
and watch under Rogers for a few years.

Speaker 4 (24:09):
But when you.

Speaker 9 (24:10):
Really go and you get past the six games and
you get back past them figuring out what they want
to do on offense, I would argue, and I don't
have to argue. The numbers back it up that the
last ten games of the year, eleven games of the year,
he played better than anyone in the NFL, and including
the playoff run, one errant throw away from making it
even further.

Speaker 4 (24:28):
So I just really think that.

Speaker 9 (24:30):
The way that Lafleur has this offense going, Jordan Love
is the best fit for him. The pocket presence, he
just looks like a Green Bay quarterback, the way he
slings the ball side ar him, the way he's throwing
and jumping and everything like that. So I just think
in this league, it's a bigger, broader question. Right in
this league, if you can have a quarterback, and you

(24:52):
find a quarterback that can do what Jordan Love does,
you pay him right away because if you wait, it's
only going to get more expensive. And an interesting nugget
on this negotiation, I would expect it to be four
or five years, okay on the extension. When is the
new CBA up Dan six years? So you can imagine
the kicker from the new media rights being negotiated in that.

(25:13):
So it's actually smart for some of these quarterbacks. You're
going to see two to do it. I bet you're
gonna see Jordan Love do it to tie their contract
to right before the CBA ends to be able to
get that kicker in media rights, and it just raises
it just skyrocket salary caps.

Speaker 2 (25:29):
Chase Daniel, co host of the Athletics Scoop City podcast
along with Diana Rassini. The Kansas City Chiefs feel like
the only team that could prevent them from winning is
the Kansas City Chiefs. Where can it go wrong for
Kansas City this year?

Speaker 9 (25:48):
It's themselves the only person and people that can beat
the Kansas City Chiefs are themselves. And they almost did
it last year with all those drops. You saw Patrick
Mahlmes on multiple cass last year, with those receivers getting
so frustrated.

Speaker 4 (26:02):
What do they do? They go out and they draft
Xavier Worthy.

Speaker 9 (26:05):
Which I think is one of the better receivers in
this class. If you're gonna go and do the speed
type thing, you're gonna run by guys. That's what Andy
Reid wants to do. You go out and you get
Hollywood Brown.

Speaker 2 (26:17):
But if you're a bull below though, Chase and Kansas
City says, we'd like to trade up to your position.

Speaker 4 (26:24):
Yeah, I don't do it.

Speaker 9 (26:26):
You don't do it, and then you lose tough on Diggs.
You're just letting the best team in the NFL get better.
So I don't understand that. And the biggest thing about
Casey's I mean everyone saw that clip that throw from
Patrick Mahomes to Xavier Worthy a few days ago in
training camp, and in my mind, I'm like, don't get
excited about a throw in training camp. Don't get excited
about a throw in training camp.

Speaker 2 (26:45):
I was beyond.

Speaker 9 (26:46):
Myself because it's just like the throw the catch, Like
you can just see the weapons.

Speaker 4 (26:51):
They're gonna have.

Speaker 9 (26:52):
The biggest question marks that offensive line, how are they
gonna hold up? But their defense stand, their defense carry them.
And you can see the growth in Patrick Mahomes this
past year. His numbers were the worst of any year
as a starter that he's been at, but he still
won a super Bowl because he was able to digest
the information into change. He didn't have to throw it

(27:13):
deep all the way. So when the best player in
the NFL gets better protections throwing leadership, that's a scary
thought for the rest of the NFL.

Speaker 2 (27:24):
How good can the Texans be.

Speaker 4 (27:27):
As good as they want to be?

Speaker 9 (27:28):
They had the Super Bowl super Bowl caliber, Like, the
expectation level is pretty high this year. Yeah, and that's
something that when we talk to some people in the
Texans organization, That's what Demiko Ryans wanted to get rid of.
The expectation level on the outside, because the expectation level
on the inside has ticket one game at a time,

(27:50):
pull back, keep it simple, stupid is like what is
their sort of motto, like, don't overthink it. They go
out and they get Stefan Diggs. This is their Super
Bowl window. Let's make no mistake about it.

Speaker 4 (28:01):
If c J.

Speaker 9 (28:02):
Stroud says healthy. Nico Collins came on the scene last year.
Tank Dale came on the scene last year. I was
talking to case Keenum, who's we're pretty tight, and he
was telling me.

Speaker 4 (28:13):
I asked him the first thing.

Speaker 9 (28:14):
We saw him at this family camp that we go
to in ses Park, Colorado, and it's a camp in
the mountains where you ride horses and you go river
raft and you do all that stuff. The first thing
I asked him when we arrived and I saw him,
I said, how good is c J.

Speaker 4 (28:28):
Stroud?

Speaker 9 (28:29):
Because I watched the film and I'm a film junkie
and I can see it. And he said to me,
point blank, he said, he has the chance to be
one of the best, if not the best quarterbacks ever,
and then he went on to just like explain the
offense and stuff, and that sort of threw me back,
But Cole. But Case doesn't really lie, like he's been
around a lot of people and a lot of teams.

Speaker 4 (28:49):
I just think the way that c J.

Speaker 9 (28:51):
Stroud processes information, the way he's able to go out
and lead from even being a rookie last year, I
think you're gonna see take a jump even this year.

Speaker 2 (29:03):
Explain to me. So Case Keenum is talking about c J.
Stroud could be one of the greatest, if not the greatest,
And then you have John Harbaugh who comes out and
talks about that Lamar Jackson. The vision is that he
could end up as the greatest quarterback of all time.
I don't know why. I don't know why he would

(29:24):
say this because factually it's not true. He has to
get past Patrick Mahomes first of all, and then there's
Tom Brady. But I like, does Lamar need a cheerleader here?
Because correct me if I'm wrong. Didn't Baltimore say any
team can give us two first round picks and you

(29:45):
could get Lamar Jackson prior to last season, So the
greatest quarterback of all time was available if you gave
them two first round draft picks.

Speaker 9 (29:56):
It makes no sense, and it sounds like he does
need a cheerlead. I mean, he's missed back to b
days being six, so maybe Harball's like, hey, come back,
we need to I'm not sure that whole situation. And
I get a head coach hyping up a quarterback, but
to say it in the way he said it, like
that's our vision for Lamar, It's for him to be
the greatest quarterback of all time in the National Football League.

(30:18):
I just sort of lost not respect for Harball, but
he's pretty truthful. But when he said that, I'm like, dude,
you've got two MVPs. Yeah, but you don't have a
super Bowl. And until you get one or two Super Bowls,
you can't even put him in that conversation because you
go out, you win the MVP last year, which you
know it was up for debate. I thought it should

(30:39):
have been Dak or Brock. Pretty I thought Lamar played
well enough. But you go and you lose a home
to the best team in the National Football League, Like,
you gotta beat the Chiefs, you gotta get past the Chiefs.

Speaker 4 (30:50):
You got to get over that hump.

Speaker 9 (30:51):
And quite honestly, that's gonna be the story from a
national media perspective. At least that's how I follow it
is until you can win the big, big game, you
can get the ones, you can do everything you want,
but it really matters in the playoffs.

Speaker 4 (31:03):
And you look at Lamar's playoff record, it's not great.

Speaker 2 (31:06):
Yeah, it just kind of put a spotlight, a brighter
spotlight on what he hasn't done instead of what it's
been a pretty remarkable career that be twenty seven. You
got two MVPs, but there's nobody in the history of
the sport that's had two MVPs and didn't win a
Super Bowl exactly. And I think that's look that plays

(31:27):
well in Baltimore. I'm sure that the Raven fans were
like yeah, But you know the thing is is it
went out to the national media as well, and that's
when we're going, I don't get it. But I think
you just added some more pressure on Lamar because he's
one of those guys and there's certain guys like the
Cowboys where you go, I don't care what you do

(31:48):
during the regular season, I want to see what you
do in the postseason.

Speaker 9 (31:52):
Do you think it's a motivation tactic, reverse psychology to
get Lamar to buy in, to think he's gonna like
that's the only way I can think about it, because
if you think about if you really think about it,
like he's he's wrong saying that, but maybe it's a.

Speaker 4 (32:07):
Motivation tactor, Like he's got two mbps.

Speaker 2 (32:10):
He can't be that insecure. He's got two mbps.

Speaker 9 (32:13):
You would be surprised insecurities of these starting.

Speaker 2 (32:18):
Quarterbacks, but not the backup quarterbacks.

Speaker 9 (32:21):
Never never where, where the where? The city's best friend
until we step onto the field.

Speaker 2 (32:26):
Are you officially retired?

Speaker 9 (32:28):
I mean yeah, yeah, I mean I've never I didn't
make some big announcement.

Speaker 4 (32:32):
Wait, yeah you can. You can break it here on
the dank.

Speaker 2 (32:36):
Chase Daniels officially retired officially. I don't know what that means,
but it is do you have to send no?

Speaker 4 (32:46):
So that's a good question.

Speaker 9 (32:47):
So I was literally, I kid you, not Dan Swanny.
You brought up like two days ago. I texted my agent,
Jeff Nowly, he works for CIA, and I said, hey, man, like,
I think it's time to send in my papers. I'm
ready to just get this over with and get this done.
He dude, it's a myth. There's no papers you signed.
I was upset because I was like, this is an
ending chapter in my life. This is what I wanted

(33:08):
to do. And he's like no, he like, burst my bubble.
I was like, yeah, I get to sign all this stuff.
I get to go to New York. He's like, dude,
I just tell him you retire.

Speaker 2 (33:15):
He retired.

Speaker 4 (33:16):
Oh my gosh, what are we doing.

Speaker 2 (33:18):
We'll check in with you during the season. Our Best
with Diana and Scoop City. The Athletic website with Chase Daniel. Thanks,
good to talk to you, buddy.

Speaker 4 (33:28):
Thanks man.

Speaker 2 (33:29):
Chase Daniel won a Super Bowl with the New Orleans
Saints and host of The Chase Daniel Show on the
YouTube channel, two time Heisman Trophy candidate at Missouri back
in seven and o eight. All right, we'll take a break.

Speaker 1 (33:42):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan
Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio wapp.

Speaker 2 (33:52):
I saw the headline the Athletic Andrew Marshawn TNT Sports
plans to match Amazon's media rights package, forcing NBA staredown. Now,
Andrew doesn't do the headline. So the headline to me
was a little confusing. There. This doesn't sound like it's
a good day for TNT if you're headed for an
NBA staredown. But let's bring in Andrew Marshaan to explain.

(34:13):
Does your story match the headline and vice versa.

Speaker 5 (34:17):
Yeah, I think it does. Dan, TNT is matching Amazon
Prime Videos completed contract with the NBA. They feel like
this is TNT. They have the right to match based
off of their contract right now, which gives them back
in rights, which means they can match another deal. The

(34:38):
NBA's contention, I believe they haven't said this publicly yet,
is going to be no, you can't. We want to
go with Amazon Prime Video. It's a streaming deal that
was a linear cable TV contract, and so this could
be headed towards litigation. So I believe the stare down
headline for my editors is accurate.

Speaker 2 (34:56):
Okay, is this a good day for TNT?

Speaker 5 (35:00):
Is it a good day? I wouldn't say it's a
good day, but i'd say that you know they're playing
their last card, and in any negotiation, leverage is the key,
and so this is a chance to have maybe some leverage,
especially with the NBA likely not wanting to go to court.
I don't think TNT wants to go to court. So

(35:21):
you know, at the word you know the best, the
NBA says, yeah, it's your deal. We're gonna pass on
Amazon to go to TNT. I would find that highly
unlikely to happen. But could they say, well, yeah, you
did have these back end rights, we disagree, we want
to move on, we want a divorce. Here's one hundred
million dollars, that's a for instance. So could they get
something out of this? Yeah, I think that's possible. And

(35:44):
so I think is it a good day for TNT.
I don't. We'll have to see, but it's a it's
a move that I can see why they made.

Speaker 2 (35:52):
How did we get to this point in the first place?

Speaker 5 (35:56):
Well, the NBA, I don't know. I want to call
it a mistake, but in the kind they have now.
They put in back end rights, which gives networks like
ESPN and TNT the rights to match conceivably in a
new deal. What's happened is, you know that was those
deals are made a decade ago. Streaming wasn't what it
is now. So there's an argument to be made that

(36:17):
these contracts are completely different. And so, uh, the NBA
is our you know, wants to move on. I mean,
this is a weird like if they if they end
up with tn T, it's a weird circumstance. It's like,
you know, you telling your wife I want a divorce,
but she's like, no, no, we have an agreement. I'm gonna
stay together for another eleven years. So I don't know

(36:38):
how that actually plays out logically, but to me, it
really right now is a legal question. I've talked to
some people who've seen the contract. I don't know the
exact language and the contract, and they say that, you know,
if your TNT can look at it one way, the
NBA can look at it another way, can they find,
you know, some kind of settlement. I'd be very surprised
if Amazon doesn't end up with at least some sort

(36:58):
of package. And you know, I'd be a little bit
more surprised if tn T has a full package of games. Now,
can they get something out of this? This is why
they're playing this card.

Speaker 2 (37:09):
What leverage does Charles Barkley have.

Speaker 5 (37:12):
I mean, he has all a leverage in the world. Uh,
you know, I know Charles is on your show a lot.
You know, I talked to Charles sometimes as well, and
he has said that he wants to retire. Now most
people don't think he will do that, but he has
a long term contract with TNT Sports and he's down

(37:33):
in Atlanta and he loves the people there, so you know,
they have a lot of things that he could still
do for them. You know, the NCAA Tournament is something
that's still on tn T and TBS is air along
with CBS. He's involved with that. They have a lot
of other entities where they could use Barkley. You know,
could they in this what's going on right now between
the NBA and tn T, could they get highlights where

(37:55):
you preserve inside the NBA so it keeps going, or
some you know, a slimmer package where he's continue with
inside the NBA. You know, I look the calculus with
inside the NBA. I don't think that really matters that
much to the NBA's executives because first off, these are
eleven year contracts. How much longer is inside the NBA
as it's currently composed, gonna go on for maybe three

(38:18):
four more years, five at most probably, And so it's
not really in the equation. But but Barkley, if he
wants to work, he's gonna get paid a lot of money.
Think Romo money if he wants to keep going, or
he can continue to work at TNT where he is
a long term contract.

Speaker 2 (38:35):
Yeah, but he's he's far more valuable than Tony Romo is.
I mean he's.

Speaker 5 (38:40):
He is Yeah, I mean yeah, I would agree. I mean, look,
the Romo contract that changed the industry. The reasons for
that happening was my day football was a disaster and
the big thing was the rights negotiations for the new
NFL deals were coming up. ESPN Romo was the biggest
thing since John Madden at that point, they wanted to
steal him. It was right before the pandemic. So the

(39:02):
reason why that deal happened and now it you know,
led to Tom Brady at three hundred and seventy five
million dollar contract. But yeah, you can argue for sure,
Studio people, you know what your your nature of your business,
talk show people, those are really the most important because
they're in terms of financially because they're building the content.
The content is the game. When you're talking about a

(39:23):
Remo situation.

Speaker 2 (39:25):
Talking to Andrew Marshawn, the Athletics senior writer covers sports media,
looking at these deals, we talked about streaming now and
the importance of streaming, where we didn't know anything about
streaming eleven years ago. These leagues have to kind of
project out of what is going to be new, you know,

(39:45):
do we have any idea what is going to be
new as far as consuming this in the next you know,
eight to eleven years, definitely.

Speaker 5 (39:53):
I mean, look, ESPN is kind of about the lean
in really heavily to try to move their business model,
you know, more towards streaming. They have a venture called Venue,
which they're teaming up with Fox Sports and with tn
T Sports where you can just get those three platforms
in one place and then they're gonna go on their own.
So they're leading in. Amazon obviously is a streaming only platform.

(40:16):
They have the NFL NBC's deal. The way it's gonna
work is that Peacock is gonna have exclusives on Mondays,
Tuesday is gonna be on National TV on broadcasts, and
then Sundays after the NFL is gonna be on broadcasts.
Then they're gonna have a plethora of playoffs, and Amazon
and NBC will rotate in terms of conference finals every year.

(40:37):
ESPN has it almost every year of their eleven year deal.
So yeah, that's where the NBA wants to go. I
mean that's clearly they want Amazon's market cap. They want
streaming because that's where the future is, you know, cables
being left behind. And so yeah, this this deal is
gonna be different. I mean, regardless of what happens with

(40:57):
TNT in the NBA, this is gonna be the NBC
is back. I mean that's the one thing that's like
basically official now with yesterday, with the Amazon being the
target for tn T, the NBC is back. You're gonna
have the John Tesh song. You're gonna have Tariko as
the lead play by player, No Eagles the number two.
They'll get some analysts and away they go.

Speaker 2 (41:17):
How good is summer has it been for the w
n b A.

Speaker 5 (41:21):
I mean it's been amazing. You know, their timing is
not perfect because you know, as part of these NBA deals,
the w n b A is also involved, and so
you know, the networks they see the growth. I mean
the WNBA I saw some early ratings from the All
Star Game, their eye popping from Saturday Night with Kaitlyn Clark.
So you know, if this was two or three years

(41:43):
down the road, I think they'd be in an even
better position. You know, executives aren't really gonna pay more
for what might be. They want what is. And you know,
the WNBA, you know Kaitlyn Clark, and we can talk
about everything else. Kaitlyn Clark's the difference everybody, and she
is driving this league and it's gonna make other teams
more popular and the sport broaden its base. Uh but yeah,

(42:07):
it's gonna see an influx. But you know, the one
thing I think is always lost in these discussions is
when we talk about the major leagues, the NFL, the NBA,
use baseball, we act as if like they just started
and they were Juggernauts. And if you go back to
Magic Bird, you know those games were on tape, the
lay of the Finals before Magic and Bird, and then

(42:29):
it grew into Michael Jordan and that league. The league
at that point was about a quarter century, which is
where the w n B A is now, and that's
where you saw the exponential growth. You know, we had
the legends of Koozy and Pistol p and Wilt and
all those people, but they wasn't as big a business
as it became. And I think the w n B
A might be having that same short of maturation where

(42:50):
you look at where it is and its history.

Speaker 2 (42:53):
Can the NFL be overexposed? Like, can we have too much?

Speaker 5 (43:01):
It's right now, it's proven. No, you know, there's no
evidence to think that we don't want more NFL Now
this year, the ratings will likely be down in the
NFL because of the presidential election. That's what we generally see.
But I think that will just be a hiccup because
of a focus on politics. But I don't think so.
I think with fantasy like, look, there's no graph that

(43:22):
goes just straight up and will football change? I do
think the thing that to watch is just the NFL's
investment in flag football, which you know, I don't think
football is. It's still gonna be tackled, but just the
game's change. Does the audience not like that as much?
If it keeps changing and you know, becomes a little
bit less, you know, it already has little less Jack

(43:44):
Lambert Dick budgets era. That's the one thing I think
that could change. But I feel like with gambling, with
fantasy football, with people have such passions for their teams,
and also it's the perfect TV sport. It's once a week.
I always say this about baseball. If the Yankees played
once a week, what would the ratings be. They might
not be football ratings, they'd be pretty high. And so

(44:06):
I do think it has the advantage of just the
perfect once a week in terms of your favorite team,
and only three hours is really a perfect model these days.

Speaker 2 (44:15):
Great to talk to you again, Andrew, thanks for joining us.

Speaker 5 (44:17):
Thanks.
