Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Seaton, would you clean up the first hour of the program.
Speaker 3 (00:09):
Yeah, this one's actually a little awkward to read right now,
but that's okay. This one's from Todd Fritz, by the way,
sitting to my right, putting together a starting five of
all transfers.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Is smart or dumb?
Speaker 3 (00:22):
I think that was answered last night because let's see
sixty six percent of the audience say that it's very smart.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Obviously, have it ins my lesson? Okay? Do I have
to start the interview with Dusty May apologizing for Todd?
Speaker 4 (00:34):
Yes, Paul, it can't be dumb. He just won the title.
It's this a proof of concept right there, that's how
you do it. Todd had a problem with this this morning.
I go, it's recruiting, whether you're recruiting somebody who's twenty
two or somebody eighteen, And we're.
Speaker 5 (00:48):
Conveniently leaving out that at the top says these.
Speaker 6 (00:50):
Are polls that might not quite work. Was the headline
of those people.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Well to bring in Dusty May, the Michigan head basketball coach.
Good morning coach, congratulations, and I apologize for Fritzy saying
that you know bringing in all these transfers is we're
proud of what you did.
Speaker 7 (01:07):
Congratulations, no worries, Dan, thank you for having me on.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
How much sleep are we working with?
Speaker 8 (01:14):
About an hour and I think I closed by about
five minutes a little bit ago in between interviews.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
What kind of party did we have last night?
Speaker 8 (01:22):
We as soon as we got back to the hotel,
and our staff kind of has a semi tradition where
if we have any big moments, we walk back from
the arena to the hotel and that's just kind of
our rat pack entourage moment. And we came to the
hotel what we thought was a small get together with
several hundred people, and it felt a little bit like
(01:45):
prom where you're taking pictures and shaking hands and whatnot.
But it was great just to see everyone under one roof.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Has it hit you yet?
Speaker 7 (01:54):
No, not at all. I'm not sure that it will.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Yeah, I'm guessing yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 6 (02:00):
What.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Like, there's no more games, so it is it just
going to hit you out of nowhere and you go,
I'm a national champion?
Speaker 8 (02:10):
Well, Dan, I think once we have our roster put
together for next year, I've been on the calls and
the zooms already this morning. The transfer portal. Transfer portal
opened again at twelve oh one last night, and we
have some holes in our roster that we must fill
and so credit our staff. They hold me accountable and
(02:31):
they've had some stuff set up this morning. So we've
been hitting the ground running.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Were you working the transfer portal after winning the championship
When you guys are celebrating, we.
Speaker 8 (02:40):
Actually contemplating doing a zoom at twelve oh one, shing
how much media we were going to have and how
many hours that would take. I think it was about
two o'clock and I said, are we still doing a zoom?
And the staff said no, that that ship passed and
we just waited till this morning.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Take me into halftime, got a small lead, but what
is your message to your team?
Speaker 8 (03:05):
Our message was that things weren't going great. We weren't
making shots. Yaxel was frustrated with us play, and we
were at four points against a team that is conditioned
to win, as any team that we faced in the
last couple of years, and so we were optimistic that
if we found a little bit of offensive rhythm, then
we could find a way to at least tie or
(03:27):
lose by no less than three the second twenty minutes.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
And I brought this up a couple of times yesterday
that unless you've shot in a big arena and the
depth perception, it's really hard to get acclimated to that.
And this was one of the worst shooting percentages for
a national title game we've had in a long, long time.
How much of a role do you think it played
that you're playing in you know, these cavernous stadiums.
Speaker 8 (03:53):
Now, Well, we shot the heck out of it on Saturday,
so we felt good about preparation. I think it had
work to do with with with Yukon's defense, the physicality game,
and just two determined basketball teams that were fighting tooth
and deal, just trying to figure out a way to win.
And they did a great job of controlling the tempo
(04:14):
of the game of forcing us to.
Speaker 7 (04:16):
Play at their pace, and they had us in a
rock fight.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Any added, I don't know what the word would be
that you did it in Indianapolis after you know, being
in Indiana under Bob Knight.
Speaker 8 (04:31):
Uh, Well, it's actually probably a little bit more distracting
because we're trying to accommodate a lot more people because
of proximity. But just as I've said repeally, it's just
a full circle moment. As a young kid, my mom
would bring me up to these clinics at the final
four of the Yes Clinics, and these basketball clinics where
the college coaches back then were actually working.
Speaker 7 (04:51):
Stations and teaching us how to shoot.
Speaker 8 (04:53):
And and trible the ball. When we're in elementary school.
Things have changed a lot in that regard. And also
in two thousand, a group of us managers came up
here because we could we could commute, and just we're
trying to network and meet any coach to make any
connection that we could, to find a way to gain
(05:15):
a spot in college basketball and literally any spot volunteer
gas that those are the jobs we were looking for.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
He's a Dusty May Michigan had basketball coach. But you survived,
Bob Knight and thrive, but you survived. But give me
your your Bob Knight. We I mean, I had my
moments with him, good and bad. I've been yelled at
before by him, but I'm sure you have as well.
(05:42):
So your favorite Bob Knight story as a student manager
as what.
Speaker 8 (05:48):
There are some, Probably my favorite one now I could
tell this because Coach has passed got rest of soul.
Our job was so menial that his wife, Karen wanted
to have more grass in their backyard at their house
in Ellisville, and Coach Knight refused.
Speaker 7 (06:04):
To cut down any trees.
Speaker 8 (06:07):
And so Coach was on a fishing trip or recruiting trip,
I can't remember now, and we got a call from
Karen that a couple of us were subpoened out to
the house and we had.
Speaker 7 (06:17):
No idea what for. And I don't know why. This
story just came to me. I've never told it before.
Speaker 8 (06:22):
And we go out to the house and she had
had several trees removed all the way down to the
to the stump or to the ground, and we had
to figure out a way to get the sawdust and
any any residue from those trees out of the yard
before Coach Night came home. So we literally had rakes
and we were picking up sawdust with our bare hands
(06:43):
so I wouldn't notice, hopefully wouldn't notice that any of
his trees have been removed while I was on a
on a hunting trip.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
Jay Billis was on last hour and he said, to
ask you about the different drinks and food that coach
Knight like like Dr Pepper lemonade.
Speaker 7 (06:59):
No Doctor pepp brit in chocolate milk.
Speaker 8 (07:01):
This is no coach And I was ahead of his
time and in many regards with analytics, with teaching pedagogy.
But this was chack Cola before chock Cola, ur Yahoo.
Uh had the soda taste with with a chocolate milk flavor,
and uh it was it was ingenius.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
Take me back to last year when you're trying to
put this team together and you're trying to do it
with players all over the country. So give me, give
me the recipe for that philosophy of what you were doing.
Speaker 6 (07:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (07:35):
Well, we take the job of Michigan and the first
day I arrive on campus, there's maybe six six or
seven guys in the locker room and and almost the
entire team had already entered the transfer portal just because.
Speaker 7 (07:46):
Of the timing of of these these moves.
Speaker 8 (07:48):
And uh, my first call was to to coach Howard
to find out who he felt like was worth investing
in as we tried to build our program and continue
the legacy of the past team.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
But you don't take it personally, Dusty, that you go
in and you realize most of the team is in
the transfer portal.
Speaker 8 (08:06):
No, not at all, not at all. I wanted to
get to know those guys. I wanted them to get
to know me. And even the players that we identify
our guys that we would love to keep, we tell them,
don't make any rash decisions. Just give us some time
and let's get on the court together. Let's spend some time.
Let's go have lunch. And because these college years are
(08:28):
I mean a lot has been said about the portal
and all this other stuff.
Speaker 7 (08:32):
That eighteen to twenty three, eighteen to.
Speaker 8 (08:34):
Twenty two are such informative years for any of this
that have changed as much as I did at that stage.
And so we just want to make sure it's the
right fit at the right stage of their careers and
their development, and so we never take a personal and
so we decided to try to keep several of them,
and finances we didn't have hardly any money. Finances wouldn't
(08:56):
allow us to keep very many. And then luckily Vlad
Golden chose to join us from FAU, and shortly thereafter
we got Danny Wolf because of his family connections to
Michigan and his desire to play at the highest level
in preparation for the NBA coming from Yale. So we
had a couple foundational pieces, a couple of returners from
the previous Michigan group that had institutional knowledge, and from
(09:19):
there we were able to build out and really set
an identity and culture in year one.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Is Michigan a football school or basketball school?
Speaker 8 (09:28):
It's an everything school, But I wish you're saying that
the football is incredibly important at Michigan. There's one hundred
and ten thousand people that gather on our campus every
single Saturday to watch high level football, to celebrate everything
that comes with the University of Michigan.
Speaker 7 (09:45):
And we've piggybacked on that.
Speaker 8 (09:47):
Our first game at Michigan there's probably thirty five hundred people,
and I can't remember the last played in front of
a crowd that wasn't a sellout and they didn't bring
great energy. So people love the university. They obviously appreciate
a certain style of play as far as tenacity and
and and teamwork and and so we're we're proud to
(10:08):
be in a place where where they celebrate all sports.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
What's the UH sweatshirt? What's the logo in your sweatshirt.
Speaker 7 (10:16):
It's the throwback Wolverine.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
Oh okay, yeah, it's the old school.
Speaker 6 (10:21):
Uh yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
Did you get advice from the Fab five? Did they
want to help you with coaching the Actually.
Speaker 8 (10:29):
They've been they've been very, very helpful, and I've I've
told them and I've told the media that other than
Michael Jordan in my lifetime, they've changed the culture of
our sport for the better more than any other team,
group or individual. And it's it's it's a it's a
point of pride for us to represent those guys. I
was actually on a show with them the other day
(10:50):
and they put me on the spot. They asked me
which Fab five was my favorite, and I and being
an Indiana guy that always loved the Pacers, I had
to go with Jalen.
Speaker 2 (10:59):
Yeah, he'll be joining us next hour.
Speaker 6 (11:02):
That's great.
Speaker 5 (11:03):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (11:03):
He's a lot for Detroit. He's very Uh, he's very
respected in our area.
Speaker 6 (11:09):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
You know sacrifice. You know the voice, it looks like
it's gone for a little while, so hopefully you get
some time to rika. You sound a little like Tom Izzo.
That's a seasoned voice.
Speaker 8 (11:23):
Yeah, that he's set that he set the standard for
all of us young coaches as far as pouring pouring
into the to our guys and our sport and uh
yeah it's uh my voice doesn't carry it well normally
and especially after a game like last night.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
Congrats Dusty, it's a great story and uh good luck.
Speaker 7 (11:42):
Thank you, Dan. I appreciate have you on.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
That's a Dusty.

Jalen Rose part of the Five. He has recently recently
launched the same page entertainment, which he'll talk about as
he gets ready to sit down. He was watching the
title game from his hometown at Detroit. How are you
(12:41):
feeling today about your Wolverines.
Speaker 10 (12:44):
I feel like a national champion, Dan. It's always great
to see you enjoying the show. You a legend. You
know how much I love and appreciate your value everything
you brought to the game over the years in all aspects.
So always an honor to be on the show. And
it's a great day to be a Michigan Wolverine. As
a Detroit kid, the Pistons had a number one seed.
(13:05):
We're going to get Kate Cunningham back for a playoff run.
Just won a national championship in football a couple of
years ago, Now we win it in basketball this year.
I'm so happy for Dusty Man and the squad. It's
a perfect day the bass up.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
How will history remember this Michigan team.
Speaker 5 (13:23):
As national champions?
Speaker 10 (13:26):
You know, being a quote unquote football school, and you
know the team has won twelve or thirteen national championships
and has one hundred and twenty thousand people at the
game every Saturday. You know that's just going to be
the standard. But There's been times even when we were
in college, just the Fab five where Desmond Howard was
also winning the Heisman Trophy. And so that's an expectation
(13:49):
when we say leaders in best, that's a real thing
at Michigan. And so there is a level of pride
and excellence and you know, not only being great at basketball,
but being great at all of.
Speaker 5 (14:00):
Of what we do.
Speaker 2 (14:01):
Who was bigger on campus, big men on campus, Fab
five or Desmond Howard, Well, it was not.
Speaker 5 (14:07):
Fair to death because it was five of them.
Speaker 10 (14:10):
You know, we could be in a lot of places
at a lot of times.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
You know, the way that coach built this team, I
don't know if this is the future, but you know
that that makes it even more amazing is you're kind
of taking pieces from all over the all over the
world and going, I can I can put this puzzle
together and have a magical run. Is this how teams
(14:38):
are going to try to build their rosters in the future.
Speaker 10 (14:41):
Absolutely. You saw Indiana do it in football this year
of what's considered a basketball school and all of a sudden,
you know they have a team of twenty three year
olds and they win you know, the football college football playoffs.
This year, and so for Dusty may though, I think
I he has the ability to do both and that's
(15:03):
what I really like about him. But in this case,
turning the team around in two years, you bring in
yax Olyndon board Big ten Player of the Year from UAB,
and then you bring in Cadot who was at UNC
and Marrow who's at UCLA, so a lot of moving parts.
Marie Johnson he was at Illinois, you know, and then
the school invests in the team. You know, you put
(15:23):
up the nil money, you create the budget, and all
of a sudden, Dusty puts his fingertips on it and
becomes magical. And they did a terrific job, and they
were the best team all season. And I was telling
this to Jamal Mashburn about Arizona and how they were
a great team. But you know, I felt like they
were a little handicapped because they didn't make the three.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
The old cast with the Fab five. How much fun
was that?
Speaker 5 (15:48):
Like college kids? Really?
Speaker 10 (15:52):
And it was really awesome because a lot of people
may or may not recognize that's really the third time
since nineteen ninety three we've been in the same place
at the same time, and one of them was early
two thousands at my celebrity charity.
Speaker 5 (16:06):
Game I did in Chicago.
Speaker 10 (16:08):
Another time was a Michigan played in the finals against Louisville.
And then one time when Juwan was coaching, we got
a chance to go to a game in ann Arbor, so,
you know, to be back with Ray Jackson, Jimmy Kyan,
Juwan Howard and see Webb and break.
Speaker 5 (16:21):
Bread and tell stories.
Speaker 10 (16:23):
It was a great opportunity for CBS and TNT and
True TV to bring us all together, and the fans
seem to really enjoy it and probably would do more
in the future.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
What makes a team famous.
Speaker 10 (16:39):
The public, So I was like giving yourself a nickname. Initially,
we didn't want to be called the Fab Fire. We
wanted to be called five Times because as a fan
of music, I knew that that was the Beatles, and
then of a fan of rap, I knew that was
Fab five Freddy, and so we didn't want to be
called the Fab five. But then the public wins out,
and I'm glad the public was right. Exact same thing
(17:00):
with anything else. The you know, the impact you have
on people and on the game speaks for itself, and
so they determine all of.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
That, how much would it to cost Michigan in nil
when Fab five was coming to Michigan.
Speaker 10 (17:18):
So here's the difference, as I learned just covering the
game this year with you know Adam Left COO, Jamal
mash Burn and Bruce Pearl is, not only would we
had the pay for play opportunity which most players are
taking advantage of, which is why you see so many
players moving around, but we actually sold merchandise, jerseys, shorts, socks, shoes,
(17:47):
hairachis like, we actually sold merchandise and helped with enrollment,
helped with the popularity of the school. So couple that
with you know, pay for playing nil money, we would
have made some pretty.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
Talking to Jalen Rose, a member of the Fab five
of course a long time NBA player as well, tell
me what the same page entertainment, what do we diving
into multimedia?
Speaker 10 (18:14):
Detroit based and I partner with Tom Gores, a good
friend of mine for the Detraite Pistons, and we really
bonded over our community work and wanted to give back
to his hometown on the flint Mine of Detroit, but
also just the state of Michigan. Just highlight a lot
of voices in talent and in all types of spaces,
whether it's docuseries. We have the number one show out
(18:35):
right now to be calls out for us how to
make sure you check that out. We also have a
project out right now called Meal Ticket that we're consulting
producers with.
Speaker 5 (18:44):
It's on Amazon.
Speaker 10 (18:45):
So really it's going to be podcasts, it's going to
be multimedia, just creating quality content for the masses.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
How many text messages did you get when Bam out
of bio scored eighty three?
Speaker 10 (18:58):
You know, I'll probably, like the rest of the world,
none of us was watching that game.
Speaker 5 (19:04):
First off, so I didn't. I didn't know what was happening.
They were playing against the Wizards, right, I didn't. I
didn't know that was happening.
Speaker 10 (19:13):
But in context, you know, I want to give Bam
a lot of credit for people who haven't played, just
the endurance and the discipline it takes to do something
consistently to get to that type of numbers.
Speaker 5 (19:26):
There, there's a there's a reason why.
Speaker 10 (19:29):
It hasn't happened in the history of the game, whether
it's free throws and yeah, it was a little spunky
at the end of the game when they were following
and trying to get it for them. But if you
think about it, it's no different. And I say this
with all due respect. If the Cleveland Browns are trying
to get Miles Garrett the sack record, they're going to
try to help them make it happen at the end
of the season, even if the team isn't playing for
(19:51):
the playoffs. And so that's that happens in sports a lot,
a lot more than people realize.
Speaker 5 (19:56):
And so I was just happy for Bam.
Speaker 10 (19:57):
It's a terrific accomplishment and joked a lot because I
feel like if he wasn't dayan Asia Wilson, he wouldn't
have never got there.
Speaker 5 (20:05):
So good for him.
Speaker 2 (20:06):
Wait, why wouldn't you have got there?
Speaker 10 (20:09):
Because I love her killer instinct, how she's been a
multiple MVPN champion and she brings it every game, So
I feel like she's a motivating factor for his approach
to the game these days.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
Okay, but now nobody's now people aren't going to text
you and say can you come on the show on
the anniversary of Kobe's eighty one. You don't have to
worry about that anymore.
Speaker 10 (20:33):
Well, I think I knew the entire time that you know,
when you're playing against greatness, you know Tom Brady's gonna
throw six or seven touchdowns in the game. But the
reality that people always forget because people keep using the
word record, Will actually has it at one hundred. That's
(20:55):
the actual record. And so again, rest in peace. We
lost them way too young. But uh, it's really an
acknowledgment to Wilt's greatness as well that he still has
the record all of these years later.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
Yeah, but as you said, I didn't guard Kobe the
whole game. People made us like you're the year. Nobody's
bringing up anybody from the Wizards to say, man, this
is going to stay with you because you guarded Bam
out of Bio when he had eighty three.
Speaker 10 (21:25):
And I'll say this with humility, it's because Jalen has
become a common name in the marketplace and so you
can attach me to it.
Speaker 5 (21:33):
There's nobody on the Wizards you can attach to it.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
But isn't it amazing the number of players in the
NBA with the name Jalen? Is it like twenty eight.
Speaker 10 (21:44):
I'll tell you a secret, not just NBA, NFL, NCAA,
in society, at at the grocery store, and it's a blessing,
and it's such a tribute to my late mom or
lost a handful of years, who combined my biological father,
Jane is with my uncle Lennard, who took it to
the hospital to give birth.
Speaker 2 (22:03):
Yeah, Jalen, I mean, if I do the math, you know, Paulie,
Before nineteen ninety two, it wasn't in the top five
hundred boys' names in America.
Speaker 4 (22:13):
Then it went to three, seventy eight and ninety two
and got up to the top fifty ten years later.
Speaker 2 (22:19):
Shaq's up there too, isn't he? Is there anybody else?
Lebron's not up there.
Speaker 10 (22:25):
So I got some fine print for those names, Shaq, Lebron,
and Denzel, who all are all time greats at what
they do.
Speaker 5 (22:33):
All of those kids are black.
Speaker 10 (22:35):
Do one thing about the name, Jalen is unisex, is universal.
Speaker 5 (22:39):
It has no color lines or boundaries.
Speaker 2 (22:43):
Are you sure there are not a lot of white
guys named Shaquille.
Speaker 10 (22:46):
No, I've never met one, Pauli either, but you check.
Speaker 2 (22:51):
Yeah, we're checking Jack and see if there's a Shaquille
like down there. Hey, great to talk to you. Good
luck with the same page Entertainment and can cratch to
your Wolverines.
Speaker 5 (23:02):
I appreciate the love of hill to the victors.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
All right, that is Jalen Rose.
Speaker 1 (23:07):

Speaker 2 (23:19):
I got a text message last night Reggie says, hey,
I want to lead off my segment talking about the
UCLA women's basketball team. I'm going, okay, great. You filled
out of bracket. Nobody else filled out a bracket. You
filled out a bracket, and you picked your alma mater
to win the national title. That's not a big jump.
Speaker 11 (23:41):
What no, if you listen to if you listen to
the pregame the women's championship, no one had Ucla even.
Speaker 6 (23:57):
Though they only had that one loss all season long.
It was all there, there you go, thank you. I
picked all four final four, which wasn't a stress. They're
all number one. Okay, that was That was a little easy.
But but look, we know the talk coming into the
championship game, what happened with Gino and down in South Carolina.
(24:20):
This is going to be a motivating thing. My girl said,
hold my beer. Hold on, hold on, that was that
was belt belt too belt to Boody.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
Come on, congratulations, thank you, congratulations man.
Speaker 6 (24:40):
Let's give the ladies some love. I know you want
to talk about Michigan and the men and all of
the Let's give my lady Bruins, Corey Close, Lauren BET's, Kiki, Rice,
Gabrielle hopkaz Gianna Neatkins. Let's give these seniors up because
I want to tell people experien serience matters, seniors matter,
(25:03):
and them having those six seniors, they scored every single point,
Every single point came from seniors. I love that.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
What stood out with Michigan's performance, whether last night or
in the tournament overall, Oh my.
Speaker 6 (25:20):
Goodness, there's size. Whoa that was like low key and
NBA type team right there. Their size was unbelievable. It
was so hard to score anywhere in the paint, not
only all season long, leave it was highlighted in this tournament.
Unbelievable size, shot blocking. But again, Elliott Caddou, when you've
(25:48):
got a guy that can run the offense, experience came
over from obviously from Carolina. Didn't have the best career there,
but for whatever reason, it changed once he got to Michigan.
Confidence wise, Dusty may instilled maybe instilled that confidence in him.
But when you've got a guy who can control the temple,
(26:08):
control the pace, be that, you know, the head of
the snake along with that size. To me, that's what
stood out the most their defense in their size.
Speaker 2 (26:18):
Your reaction to Michael Malone going to North Carolina was
what good for him.
Speaker 6 (26:25):
I was surprised that last year there were so many
job openings in the Pro game and he wasn't able
to get in one of them. And you talk about
a basketball savant, I thought he got kind of railroaded.
Well he was in Denver. This is a great job
for him to kind of set pace and step back
(26:47):
in life because NBA is go, go go. I don't
know how well the recruiting thing will be for him
in NIL and all that, but you're going to one
of these blue blood type, you know, versities where I'm
sure the bank will be open. In terms of ex's
in o's, in game management, he is one of the best.
(27:10):
So it's I think it's a great fit for him
because now he gets the chance to kind of slow
down a little bit as opposed to going one hundred
miles a minute in the NBA.
Speaker 2 (27:20):
How involved do you think Michael Jordan is at Carolina
with basketball?
Speaker 6 (27:24):
I think he has a huge influence. I mean, he's
their most famous athlete. Their team is repped by Jordan Brand,
So I'm sure he had a scene and I'm sure
he did his due diligence. I'm sure he had his
conversations with Michael Malone.
Speaker 2 (27:40):
But does he resonate with a seventeen year old.
Speaker 6 (27:44):
They all wear Jordan's, of course, everyone knows, yes, absolutely.
Speaker 2 (27:51):
But it feels like the seventeen year old Kobe might
resonate more with them than Mike. Maybe maybe Lebron would
resonate more than Mike would. Is that fair?
Speaker 5 (28:04):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (28:04):
Fair enough? I could, Yes, fair enough.
Speaker 2 (28:07):
But at the end of the day, but the parents,
the parents would be on the parents, Michael, Yeah, Mike, Mike.
Speaker 6 (28:15):
But the kids, kids are out there buying Jordan's. As
much as I love Lebron's, not saying I want a parent,
they'll they'll want Kobe's. They love Kobe's shoes too. Kobe's
has a huge following as well, so does Lebron. Lebron
has a nice following, but in terms of shoe jails.
Speaker 2 (28:33):
Come on, now we know and you have Jordan's.
Speaker 6 (28:38):
Why are you bringing this?
Speaker 2 (28:39):
I was just curious because are you a slater?
Speaker 6 (28:42):
In my career I had Jordan's okay, later before I
was just a regular Nike athlete. Are you everyone else?
Speaker 2 (28:51):
Are you a sneaker head?
Speaker 5 (28:53):
No?
Speaker 6 (28:53):
I'm not.
Speaker 2 (28:54):
He never collected.
Speaker 6 (28:55):
No I have. I have quite a few of the
Jordan runs, but I'm not like I gotta get these.
I'm not die hard like some people are.
Speaker 2 (29:05):
You know that I was watching Joker and Wemby and
it was a Saturday afternoon game.
Speaker 6 (29:11):
Oh and it was so.
Speaker 2 (29:13):
Much fun to just watch that game because I love
both of the players. But here is Joker putting up
forty on the best defensive player in the game, and
even there were shots where Wemby put his hands up
like I don't know what I can do with this,
And you know, Wemby had a great game against Joker
(29:33):
as well. SCA is winning the MVP, of course, but
that was fun to watch. That was a late season battle.
I don't know what was really at stake other than pride,
but I will.
Speaker 6 (29:45):
Say this, with the Lakers being hurt, I don't know
if they can hold onto that number three seed and
the Denver note Nuggets move up and get that three seed.
How fun would that be? Knock on wood. They both
had their business in the first round, Oh my goodness,
and we get those two juggernauts in the second round,
(30:07):
San Antonio. But let me say this too. Wimby was
guarding Jokic for most of the game. Yeah, Jokis was
not guarding Wimby for most of the games. See that's
the difference. And this is why I do love Wimby.
He takes on the challenge. It's my responsibility to stop
the best player on the other team, which is jo kids.
(30:27):
I'm gonna take that challenge. And look, Yoki just put
up forty on a lot of great players, just not Wimby.
So it's hard to say, oh, he'd be dropped forty
on Wimby, the supposedly the best, you know, defensive player.
That's his job. He's gonna contest. He's gonna go against
the best player each and every night. I like that.
(30:47):
He's not dodging the smoke at all.
Speaker 2 (30:49):
Oh hey, I acknowledge that. I love Wemby. But Joker
puts up forty and own he owns the team record
against team and head to head matchup as well. He's
just still they by far and away the best offensive
player in the game.
Speaker 6 (31:06):
Yes, I agree, but you and I are. I think
we're in sync on who will win MVP. I think
that'll be SGA and them.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
Having Lemby will win an MVP before Joker wins another one.
Wemby's having a better year. I mean, Jokers having a
better year this year than he did in his MVP years.
Speaker 6 (31:27):
But can I just say one thing, dude, The dude
is averaging triple double as a sinner, he's leading the
league in assists and rebounds, and he's a top five
score and he won't win MVP. No, he's let me
think about what we're saying here, But.
Speaker 2 (31:46):
If they had a better record than he's winning the end,
that's what it comes down to.
Speaker 6 (31:51):
I think this year SCA is putting up incredible numbers,
but I think what will tilt towards him will be
the overall number one seed. It and again, this is
coming off having the best record, going deep in the playoffs,
going to seven games, winning finals MVP, and oh, by
(32:12):
the way, you come back what two months later, maybe
less than two months later and you're doing it all
over again. Let's give SGA and the Thunder a lot
of credit for doing that.
Speaker 2 (32:23):
Absolutely, we're talking to Reggie Miller. I didn't give you
the proper introduction. Let's see you need no need. People
know you got my hornage at the Celtics coming up tonight, Howard.
Look who's your rookie of the year.
Speaker 6 (32:42):
I'm still going with Con. But what Cooper Flag has
done over the last week or so, fifty one and
then I think forty five against the Lakers, that's great
and all for Con and his team, every game means something.
I mean, they've had the same I get best record
I believe since January twenty second only behind the Spurs.
(33:04):
And if you look at their starting five LaMelo, Brendan, Miller, Kahn,
Miles Bridges, Mussa Diabate, they're plus minus by far. They're
starting five by far. It's superior than any other starting
five since January first. This is one game and I'm
glad we added it late in the season because when
(33:25):
you watch the Hornets play, it's hard to kind of
gauge their pace and their speed from television. So I'm
curious because both of these teams tonight. They kind of
are very similar. They both like to jack up a
lot of threes. They live behind that three point line.
They're both are great offensive reboundings teams, and they're both
great defensively. And March fourth, the Hornets came in to
(33:52):
Boston and put a whooping on Boston. Now again, Tatum
came back a couple of weeks later and they went
to Charlotte and Boston did. So this could be a
very very welcome be in a first round matchup as well.
So I think there's gonna be some messages being sent
from both teams.
Speaker 2 (34:09):
Okay, I think Cooper Flagg should be the rookie of
the year. You're factoring in record for a Rookie of
the Year award. We don't do that. We're doing it
because that can tilt towards Conknipple. I think we're surprised
at Canipple. We're not surprised at Cooper Flag. He plays
on a bad team. Imagine being nineteen years of age
(34:32):
and everybody knows you're the guy who's gonna have the
ball and try to score, and he puts up fifty
one and forty five. I really don't think it's close.
I love Canipple, I do watch the Hornets play games,
but Cooper Flagg is leading an entire team every single night.
There might not be good, but everybody in the building
knows we have to stop him.
Speaker 6 (34:56):
All fair and valid points. But also too, You've got
a dude who is not only leaving the league but
broke the rookie record with two hundred in sixty five
and counting may threes. Just go back last year for
the Hornets, they weren't in this position. Con comes in
and it helps that Brandon Miller has been help been healthy,
(35:18):
he was hurt. It helps that Lmelo Ball has been healthy.
But Khon Kineble has added something to this Hornets team.
I don't think it's a runaway for Cooper to win it. Yeah,
let's give Con some credit. Two hundred and sixty five
may threes as a rookie, and it's not like he's
just jacking him up and he has a terrible shooting percentage.
(35:39):
He has added a lot of stability for this Hornets team.
Speaker 2 (35:43):
Okay, I brought this up, and I need you to
bring it up next year. Fifty years since the ABA merger, Yes, okay,
the Spur.
Speaker 6 (35:57):
You want me to bring it up on it? Let
the red white and blue ball.
Speaker 2 (35:59):
Look here, just hear me out. Next season one game Spurs, Nuggets,
two original ABA teams, old uniforms, red white and blue ball,
and you have ABA Night in the NBA. What do
you think?
Speaker 6 (36:18):
I absolutely love it. The only thing I would change
in what you just said it would have to be
Spurs versus the Indiana Pacers. What are you talking about?
Three ABA championships? Roger Brown, I'm okay with that.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
I'm okay.
Speaker 6 (36:34):
We're going with the Spurs and the Indiana Pacers. Adam Silver.
If you are listening there, it's Reginald Allo wishes Miller.
We want ABA Night, Spurs, Pacers all bring and the
cheerleaders and oh yes, let's do it.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
Okay, But can I get okay? Who the Nuggets got
to be involved in this?
Speaker 6 (37:00):
Is there still a are both of the only three
ABA teams left that merged?
Speaker 2 (37:09):
The Nets?
Speaker 6 (37:11):
Yeah? But the Brooklyn Yeah, we could do the Brooklyn nets.
Speaker 2 (37:14):
And I want guys to wear afros too, and like
it's fifty years ago, maybe mustaches, go teas or whatever
tight georch.
Speaker 6 (37:23):
Would you love to see Uh, yo, kids, just run
out for the layup line, just with a big old
doctor j brow.
Speaker 2 (37:34):
Yeah, I'd like that fifty year anniversary.
Speaker 6 (37:38):
I hope they're listening to us. That's one game.
Speaker 2 (37:41):
You got the whole fielding Reggie, you're on the couple tonight.
Speaker 6 (37:45):
Furs Pacers, and we've got Nuggets nets.
Speaker 2 (37:49):
Yes, let's do it ABA night standalone. Those four teams
play and it's a BA night next year during the
regular season.
Speaker 6 (37:58):
You know the red white, blue ball. That that's chef's kiss.
Speaker 2 (38:03):
Come on, and you know what, we're gonna call it
fro back Night.
Speaker 6 (38:07):
Oh my goodness, you're going a little too far, are
you not.
Speaker 2 (38:11):
That's gold.
Speaker 6 (38:13):
Look I'm in for warm up.
Speaker 2 (38:19):
Come my god, you're.
Speaker 6 (38:21):
Getting too gimmicky now. I like everything. How we set it.
Speaker 2 (38:24):
Up tight short night? Yes we do that, Yes, yeah,
we we just promoted his tight short night. John John Stockton,
Will John stock.
Speaker 6 (38:37):
The old blazer, you know, the big lapale blazer. Yeah, oh,
let's bring him back.
Speaker 2 (38:43):
You could have Utah Jazz have the John Stockton shorts
Night and uh the Jazz dress up like John Stockton
the way he played.
Speaker 6 (38:54):
I'm staying out of the John. We're cool right.
Speaker 2 (38:59):
John was just dirt to everybody, not just yeah he
was dirty. He was dirty. Reggie will be on the call.
Uh Noah Eagle tonight my Hornets against the Celtics. That's
eight eastern on NBC and Peacock. Thanks Reg, appreciate.
Speaker 6 (39:16):
Your theater, our seating. You're you may be leaving, You're
not gone, but you will never be forgetting. You and
I got you and I started together in the trenches.
He started together you.
Speaker 2 (39:28):
And I Wait, did you say he'll be gone, not forgetting.
Speaker 6 (39:33):
Never forgotten, gone but never forgotten.
Speaker 2 (39:37):
I was like, what is forgetting?
Speaker 6 (39:39):
No, he's gone but never forgot, forgotten, Okay, forgotten.
Speaker 2 (39:43):
Why are we yelling?
Speaker 6 (39:44):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (39:45):
Thanks Reg, Go shoot shoot some jumpers here.
