Speaker 2 (00:04):

(00:26):
dot com, search the Dan Patrick Show for details and
then on Friday May fifteenth, we will be here to
give away a Rectech grill. Say good morning if you're
watching on Peacock or the NBC Sports Network or listening
on our radio affiliates around the country. iHeartRadio, Fox Sports
Radio just to name a few. We'll have a pull
(00:47):
question today. Dylan will do the honors. We have Tyler
sitting by. He'll take your phone calls each seven to
seven three DP show Basketball last night, hold your horses
when it comes to the Spurs over the Timberwolves because
Anthony Edwards did come back, came off the bench and
surprise surprise as the Spurs at home lose in spite
(01:09):
of a triple double from Lemby. But it's a misleading
triple double. That's why not all triple doubles are the same.
Because while he did have twelve blocks, he was not
good offensively, did not make a three. And give credit
to Minnesota because the only way you're going to stop
or at least contain Wemby is to rough him up.
(01:31):
And I you know, in today's NBA, good luck trying
to get away with that. In the nineties, you'd be
able to do that, you'd be able to be really physical.
But you know, I've seen Julius Randall, I've seen Draymond
Green where they're physical with him, they get right up
right on him. He was zero for eight from three
point range. Give credit to Minnesota because you don't have
(01:53):
Dante Divencenzo coming off the bench. Anthony Edwards came off
the bench. I might have him come off the bench
game two as well. No need to put him in
there where he's gonna have to play thirty thirty five minutes.
Easy him in. You already stole one game on the road,
and you've got games coming up tonight. Cavaliers they are
getting three and a half against the Pistons, the Lakers
(02:16):
getting fifteen and a half against the thunder Wow. On Wednesday,
the seventy six Ers are getting six and a half
against the Knicks, And on Wednesday the Timberwolves are nine
and a half point underdogs against the Spurs. Back to
the Knicks. With what they did last night, they are
(02:36):
just blowing out people, and you're seeing a team that
has figured something out. They were down two to one
to the Hawks and something clicked. We'll talk to Reggie
Miller about that a little later on, but they're a
different team and Brunson at thirty five, they win it
comfortably one thirty seven to ninety three. And with the Sixers,
(02:56):
you just come off a grueling series seven games, you
beat Boston Ian Boston, and then a quick turnaround and
you face the Knicks, and the Knicks were ready for them.
I'm not sure. I mean, we've talked about Brunson and
Karl Anthony Town's lack of defense, but it doesn't matter
if you're playing the way they are. But Embeid, he
(03:19):
just labors. But it's deceptive. I guess it always looks like,
you know, Jim Brown used to do this. Jim Brown
was one of the great running backs of all time,
one of the toughest, most durable. Every time he got tackled,
he would get up as if it was the last
time he was going to be able to get up,
and you're thinking, that's the baddest guy on the football field.
(03:42):
But he always gave you the impression that, oh man,
that hurt, I'm going to try to get up and
come back to the huddle and then I'm gonna run
for twenty five yards the next time. With Embeid, it
really feels like he is laboring out there, and they
look tired and understandably, but you got a quick turnaround.
(04:03):
Now you're gonna play tomorrow night in the garden, and
those fans can sense it now because Boston's out. And
if you're a Nick fan, this is where you got
to caution yourself. You gotta be careful. Don't be taking
your shirt off too soon before you go outside on
Seventh Avenue. But it's in your head that this is
(04:24):
the year we're going to the finals. Because we can
beat Cleveland, and we can beat Detroit, and we can
beat Philly. We don't have to worry about anybody except ourselves.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Yes, Marvin Knicks fans, don't you do it because this
happened to you guys last year when you guys beat
the Celtics. Man, all we gotta do is beat the
pacers and guess what. Tyre's halliburn but no, I know
belt to behind.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
For over forty years now, Tyre Rack's been helping you
find the right tires for howe and what and where
you drive ship fast and free back by, free road
hazard protection, convenient installation options like mobile tire installation, direc
dot com the way tire buying should be. We will
talk to the trainer for the Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo,
(05:11):
Cherie de Vaux. She was great TV after her horse
won a last to first ride and hill Join is
coming up next hour. So Cavs Pistons Game one, Lakers
at the Thunder Game one. I do find it interesting, entertaining,
and sometimes I marvel at this where the Mothership, in particular,
(05:35):
they always try to bring the cowboys into any story,
doesn't matter what it is. They want to have the
cowboys as part of the conversation on a daily basis.
Now I understand this because I know the playbook. I
was there for eighteen years. They also try to keep
alive the Michael Jordan Lebron James conversation. And I saw
(05:55):
it yesterday and by the way, I should take away
your media credential if you say a team does not
have a chance to win. I saw and heard this today.
The Lakers have no chance. They do have a chance.
You know who doesn't have a chance. The Pacers, they
don't have a chance. Orlando doesn't have a chance. The
(06:19):
Celtics don't have a chance. The Lakers have a chance. Now.
It could be a real small chance. But don't say
how many times does that come back to bite analyst experts.
They have no chance, they do have a chance. Now,
the fact that if Lebron could somehow beat Okay C
(06:41):
that would make him the best basketball player of all time.
He'd be doing that without Luca beating the defending champs.
I'm like, Lebron will never be better than Michael Jordan.
To a lot of people, it's never gonna happen. Lebron
could win the title this year, he still won't be
on the pedestal than Michael Jordan. People won't allow it.
(07:04):
But that doesn't stop people in my industry from trying
to keep this alive. As I've said many, many times,
greatest resume is Lebron. The greatest player is Michael. That's it,
very simple. Lebron is not going to be better than
Michael Jordan, end of the sentence, exclamation point, whatever you
(07:27):
want to put. But I did find it interesting when
somebody said, you know, if Lebron beats OKAYC and Man's
something Mike never did. Well, what do you mean by that?
Oklahoma City hadn't been invented yet, and so no, he
never beat OKAYC. He beats Seattle. It is funny though.
(07:51):
Now I've been in these rundown meetings what they're called.
So you you go in for a rundown meeting and
then you go and start writing the show at the Mothership.
At least this is the way it used to be.
So you sit around, you got all the producers, coordinating producers,
you have your director in there, the talent is in there,
and you're just going around talking about different stories and
(08:12):
different ideas. And back when I was there, you were
trying to incorporate Duke North, Carolina, Red Sox, Yankees, Mike
Tyson now rant and those are headline makers. But then
even when Duke and North Carolina aren't playing basketball, You're
still trying to bring them back into the equation. Or
the Red Sox and the Yankees. It's like, how do
(08:32):
we get them back into the show. And that's what
goes on now. Cowboys then Lebron slash Lakers guaranteed, maybe
a Caitlin Clark if you can. But I always find
it interesting of how you as soon as Caleb Downs
was drafted, I knew the next day the mothership would
(08:55):
go Are the Cowboys super Bowl contenders? Sure? Why not
not the other draft picks? It was Caleb Downs Cowboys
now super Bowl continking?
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (09:09):
Sure, I know? Eight seven seven three DP show email
address DP at Danpatrick dot com, Twitter handle at DP
show DP. The Thunder a huge favorite in the series
here minus sixteen hundred against the Lakers, but the Lakers
(09:30):
are fifteen and a half point underdogs tonight. I don't
think Luca. Now, there was video of Luca's shooting, but
I don't know if like how far away he is
from going through basketball drills. I just saw him shooting.
But that's encouraging. But you know, you're gonna have to
(09:50):
extend this to probably six games, maybe seven games if
there's any hope for Luca. I think the initial report
was he was not going to be able to be
ready for this series, but they may run out of
time trying to get him back, all right, Dylan, which
poll question for the first hour of the program.
Speaker 4 (10:10):
We got a few, Dan. This one's from Paulie. If
I'm a Knicks fan, I'm thinking about going to the
NBA Finals, or I'm doing my best to not think
about that at all.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
In any way, I don't think you can get it
out of your head. I mean, I think if you're
a Knicks fan, you're like, why not? You know, but
let's just start thinking big here, you know, don't deny it.
It's okay. I mean, ben Stiller is so confident he
went to the Met gallon instead of being front row
(10:42):
with Timothy in the Shallow Maize.
Speaker 4 (10:45):
Well, that's one of our other pole questions. Dan Is
ben Steller opting for the met Gala over the next
game is no big deal or week.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
I didn't think that I would be talking about the
Met Gala this week. But Ben Stiller had the audacity
to skip game one the series against the seventy six
ers to take his wife to the Met Gallen, But
Timothy Shallome, he's a real nick fan. When did he
(11:20):
start getting front row seats? Was that when the Dylan
movie came out? Like there had to be something where
it's like, now you get front row seats.
Speaker 4 (11:30):
Maybe Dune one.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
Okay, yeah, uh, Well Ben Stiller didn't show up. He
went with his wife to the met Gallon.
Speaker 4 (11:45):
I was thinking about that. Is is the Metgala the
most exclusive like event or whatever membership, whatever you want
to call it in the world.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
I don't know what happens there, I guess, but once
you walk in with your outfit, what happens when you
get inside.
Speaker 4 (12:05):
Well there's no photography, Like I don't think anyone's ever
seen a picture of the party inside, which means it's
probably pretty awesome.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
But you just sit around at tables and admire what
everybody's I don't know what the met galo is all about.
I know that the big thing is when everybody walks in,
but I don't know what happens after that. Is it
like fight club? Like they're not allowed to tell you. Yeah, okay, yeah, pony.
Speaker 5 (12:30):
It's the Metropolitan Museum of Arts, costume institute and fundraiser,
and it's one hundred thousand dollars per seat and you're invited,
but you also have to pay, and they work it
out for some celebrities. But it's a huge fundraiser that's
been going on forever, and costumes are encouraged as you enter.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
Okay, but this was Jeff Bezos and his wife who
I think are hosting this. Beyonce was also one of
the code shares or something. But one hundred thousand dollars?
How do they decide who pays one hundred thousand and
who doesn't or who pays fifty thousand and not one
(13:08):
hundred thousand? Checking and what do you get out of that?
Speaker 5 (13:12):
Like crabcakes?
Speaker 2 (13:13):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (13:13):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
Is there a concert? Is there? Like anybody hosting that?
Do you just walk in and sit at your table
and then mill about as they like to say, Yes, Paul.
Speaker 5 (13:25):
Every year inside there is a theme, so it has
a different theme and look inside it from year to year.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
Okay, but what do you do when you go in there?
Speaker 5 (13:32):
Drink and talk to people?
Speaker 4 (13:33):
I think it's official Illuminati business then orovile?
Speaker 7 (13:38):
Yes, un And like you were saying, once everybody sees
you in your outfit, which looks a lot of times
very uncomfortable and do or pretentious. Can you put on
sweats at a T shirt? Now that everybody got a
good look at you and took those initial photographs, now
you're be able to be comfortable.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
But Timothy shallow May's girlfriend, Kylie Jenner went to the
met Gala. Yes, Dylan, do you think there.
Speaker 4 (13:58):
Was an argument about that at all? When they're a leave,
they're both about to, you know, walk their.
Speaker 2 (14:01):
Separated park av No, but this is what one really loves.
I don't think Kylie Jenner wants to go to the
Knicks game. I think she wants to be seen at
the Knicks game. She's there with her boyfriend. She could
act like, you know, she knows what's going on. But
he's there because he's grew up in New York. He's
a diehard Knicks fan. She is more comfortable to met gala. Yes,
(14:26):
I think we give Ben Stiller a hall pass. Born
in New York City, sixty years old. He's been attending
Knicks games for at least thirty years, and he wants
to take his wife to an event for game one.
Speaker 5 (14:36):
This was at game seven. I think you give the
guy the hall pass. He's not a newcomer, he's not
a bandwagon guy.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
Well, I'm not a Knicks fan, so it doesn't matter
to me. I just found it interesting that Knicks fans
were I don't know if they were divided. It felt like,
how could he not be at the game, Like this
is our year, this is more important than a met gala.
Speaker 3 (14:59):
Yes, Mart said the operative term Knicks fans, those aren't
the most you know stable Okay, yes, Stable's the word
I wanted to.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
Say, Yes, Todd.
Speaker 7 (15:10):
I won't to know if there was any argument or
even discussion at all between Ben Still and Christine Taylor
about like, I know, we had this plan for a
few months, but it just worked out to me. My
next game one at the Garden. It's like, you know,
I really like to go to the game, and she's like, no,
you're coming with me. You're keeping your word, just taking
me to the Metdal.
Speaker 2 (15:26):
You know, he probably thought, you know what, we planned this,
so we're going. I'll be there for all the other
home games. I'm sure he'll be there on Wednesday night, Yes, Mark.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
And there's no refund on one hundred thousand dollars a plate.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
If he if he spent that, I did see him though,
when he was walking in with his wife and the
photo opportunity. I think he said Nixon six, so he was.
He was still there in spirit with the Knicks. Yes, Mark, he.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
Had the orange tie too, orange and blue yenna. He
still he's loyal to the soil.
Speaker 2 (15:59):
Yeah, loyal to the soil. Correct. Okay, that's new to
the show. Yes, Tome he.
Speaker 7 (16:06):
Wore a very basic suit, like it wears you when
you're getting bond mitsfit or something like that with the Native.
So basically, I guess my question is, and maybe it's
more of a women thing, but guys get dressed up
crazy too. You're expected to dress really right wildly for that.
So are you looked upon as anything? But if you're
just kind of dressed like Plaine, like you're going out
to dinner, which is how Ben still looked at the
met galap.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
I don't know, did it bother you?
Speaker 8 (16:29):
No, it didn't.
Speaker 7 (16:30):
But I feel like there's pressure on men and especially
women that they have to, you know, dress a certain
crazy wild way like it's Halloween or something, and if
you don't, they'll probably be whispering like you could wear
that like any night.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
This is the met gal ar, you gotta be crazy.
And then I saw Stevie Nicks, legendary Stevie Nicks walking
in and it looked like you probably could have had
the seven Dwarfs underneath her skirt. It is so big
like you could have you could have snuck somebody in.
Her dress was huge. I'm just saying the skirt or whatever. Yes, yes,
(17:04):
I've got the photo here. Ben Stiller wore Knicks colors
to the met Galach. He wore a medium to dark
blue suit and orange. If he would have worn the
old Patrick Ewing high top Adidas with his suit knee pads,
that would have been great. That would have been nice
wristbands too. Patrick Ewing, all right, let me take a break.
(17:24):
When we come back, Paul has a quick NBA quiz.
We'll have our poll options as well. The trainer for
the Kentucky Derby winner will join us. Reggie Miller will
stop by just getting started on this Tuesday.
Speaker 1 (17:37):

Speaker 2 (18:18):
One of the great stories this year happening at the
Kentucky Derby as Golden Tempo came from last to first
and the trainer for the horse, Golden Tempo, Chari de Vaux,
joins us on the program. Congratulations. Does Golden Tempo know
that he did something special?
Speaker 8 (18:38):
I think he does.
Speaker 10 (18:40):
Getting he's getting a lot more attention and pats, and
then he was auditioning for a stelling career just now
when we had him out with a couple local reporters.
So I think he's really relishing that he's going to
get to have a lot more fun in his next
phase of life.
Speaker 2 (18:54):
Give me the race plan that you put forth before
the race started.
Speaker 8 (19:00):
So Golden Tempo is a deep closer and we've.
Speaker 10 (19:04):
Tried to get him a bit more in contact with
the field by putting the blinkers on him.
Speaker 8 (19:11):
That didn't really seem to help.
Speaker 10 (19:12):
He just seems to like to let everyone else do
the hard work in front of him.
Speaker 8 (19:16):
And do his best running late.
Speaker 10 (19:18):
So the conversation with Jose was really just you know,
you're in an outside post, just let the field go
in front of you, save you get down to the rail,
save ground, and then you know he was going to
be wide at making his run no matter what, just
because of how he runs. So it's really important that
when you can, you're not losing any you know, any
(19:40):
distance in the race, any ground as we call it.
So and the other thing I had mentioned to Jose
is just he had in his previous start in Louisiana Derby,
he dove down to the rail because he thought that's
where the horse was going to do his best running.
But you really can't do that in the field of
the Kentucky Derby. There's too much traffic. Horses are gonna
(20:02):
close you off. And so I just said, just swing
as wide as you can so you get a clear
shot at it. And if you could have drawn it
up on a playbook, then that would be exactly how.
Speaker 8 (20:15):
Jose inactive.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
What can you see though from your vantage.
Speaker 8 (20:19):
Point not much? All I could see, like Churchill's a bit.
Speaker 10 (20:24):
Tricky to watch races, especially in a big crowd, so
you're watching on the TV, and most of the race
he wasn't even on the screen, and neither was his
little chick lit. So I was watching a lot of
the complexity of the first part of the race, and
I was hoping Jose was a man with a plan
because he was so far out of it and they were,
to be fair, they were going really fast in front
(20:46):
of him, But I picked him up, like when they
came off the stretch and I could see him, and
that's when my wonderfully viral video of me cheering him
on started. And when they came by where I was standing,
he was just getting to renegade. And then you know,
(21:07):
then again they still had quite a lot of the
race left to run, so then I had to watch
it on the big screen.
Speaker 8 (21:15):
I couldn't believe it.
Speaker 2 (21:17):
What do you see when you see yourself in that moment?
Speaker 10 (21:22):
It just it felt like it was all the years
of hard work, you know, I've put a lot of
I've put all my life in this industry up to
this point, you know, from when I started twenty two
years ago, and it just seemed it felt like it.
Speaker 8 (21:37):
Was a culmination of all of that. And I was
just so proud of Golden Tempo and just so.
Speaker 10 (21:42):
Elated for Jose and then I think myself was the
last thought that was is in my mind about that moment.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
How do you know you're good at your job?
Speaker 8 (21:55):
That's a good question.
Speaker 10 (21:58):
I A lot of people would say results. For me,
it's the results, but also, this is a sport where
you have to put the horse first, in their safety first.
Speaker 8 (22:12):
And I'm gonna knock on woocs they hate saying this, but.
Speaker 10 (22:16):
Have a low rate of significant incidents of horses getting
hurt on the track, and that's what I'm most proud of.
You know, results come, but putting the horse first and
just making sure that they're safe in their races and
coming out of it happy and healthy is what's most important.
Speaker 2 (22:34):
Who have you heard from since the wind? That would
surprise me, to be honest.
Speaker 8 (22:42):
I haven't even gotten through all my messages. Okay, I
mean it was fun.
Speaker 10 (22:49):
I went to school in Southwest Florida in a small
town that has nothing to do with horse racing, and
that was a big deal. Then it's kind of when
I'm watching you know, well known figures talking about me
on you know, on different podiums and social media.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
When do you decide on the Preakness.
Speaker 8 (23:14):
We're going to give it a couple of days.
Speaker 10 (23:16):
It could be as early as Wednesday or tomorrow or Thursday.
Daisies here representing the Flips stable. So we just had
a little chat and you know, we just said, we
talk a little bit. He's going to go to the
track tomorrow and we'll come up, you know, we'll come
up with a plan in short order.
Speaker 2 (23:33):
Yeah, because I'm not sure if horse racing has become
more specialized where we're gearing for the Derby, or we're
gearing for the Preakness, we're gearing for the Belmont, Whereas
when I was growing up, you were hoping that you
could be in all three races and win a triple crown.
I don't know how important that is. Can you enlighten
me on that in today's world of horse racing, Well.
Speaker 10 (23:56):
It's it's definitely different. We do focus more on the
race to race of you know, of what we're doing.
So the Kentucky Derby was our big goal. We didn't
I didn't, not in a bad ways. They didn't have
faith in the horse. I couldn't believe that we actually won.
So and I haven't had a chance to sit and
(24:18):
catch my breath and really think about the Triple Crown.
Speaker 8 (24:21):
You know, the factors in it are.
Speaker 10 (24:23):
He's a horse that relish is a mile and a quarter,
so he ran a mile in three sixteenths in his
previous start. So you know, I'm happy to have a
horse that can win the Kentucky Derby when the Belmont
win the Travers.
Speaker 8 (24:35):
But he's so specialized.
Speaker 10 (24:37):
But and that's why we're waiting to see what his
energy level is like when he gets back to the track.
You know, see how he's moving, because he's going to
have to really take a jump forward to be able
to take that extra sixteenth of a mile away from him.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
So it wouldn't matter if I put in an extra
week in between the Derby and the Preakness, right that,
that doesn't matter. It's just this horse as good at
the these distances or this distance.
Speaker 10 (25:01):
Okay, exactly, and that has nothing to do with the timing.
And I admire any horse that tries for the Triple Crown,
whether we take that route or not.
Speaker 8 (25:12):
But it's a horse by horse basis.
Speaker 10 (25:15):
If you are a different type of horse with a
different running style, probably you know would play different in
our decision making.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
Secretariat's number still stands there, one fifty nine to four.
I think Secretariat would have won the Derby by fifteen
lengths given. But like it feels like everybody's evolving. Athletes
are evolving, like we're getting bigger and stronger and better faster,
but secretariats still remains. Why is that?
Speaker 8 (25:45):
Because he was an elite horse.
Speaker 10 (25:46):
He's one of the greatest horses that ever roam the
earth or you know, in racing in our industry, so
you know he was elite and it just shows by
him having those big achievements and milestones that just can't
even become close to reaching in modern days.
Speaker 2 (26:06):
What souvenirs are you keeping from the race?
Speaker 10 (26:10):
I have my I made a custom pair of shoes,
so those are those are staying. And I have one
one rose from the garland, so that's being preserved. And
I didn't grab a thing of dirt. I should just
grab a big handful of dirt, but you know, definitely
not in my.
Speaker 8 (26:29):
Mind at the time.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
But send somebody back to get you some dirt there.
Speaker 10 (26:34):
I have I do have a stable there, so it's
not outside of the realm, but it would have just
been nice to have the dirt.
Speaker 4 (26:39):
On that day.
Speaker 10 (26:39):
You know, I'm just kidding. It's that's probably gross. I
have enough just from walking back and forth from the
track to the barn.
Speaker 2 (26:47):
Did you bet on the race?
Speaker 10 (26:49):
I don't bet, rarely do I bet, so I think
it's enough pressure for the horse. They don't need the
weight of my financial burden on them either.
Speaker 2 (27:01):
Did your friends bet?
Speaker 8 (27:03):
My friends did bet so.
Speaker 10 (27:04):
I had a lot of happy congratulatory text to me,
but it's probably more for them because they bet, and
I think some of them even had the trifecta.
Speaker 2 (27:13):
Well, congratulations. It felt almost like a Disney movie as
I'm watching this unfold, and maybe they turn it into
a movie. But congratulations and good luck with the decision
for the Preakness.
Speaker 8 (27:26):
Thank you so much. I appreciate you having me on.
Speaker 2 (27:28):
That's Cheri de vou the trainer for the Kentucky Derby
winning Golden Tempo.

Speaker 2 (27:46):
Reggie Miller, Hall of Famer, NBC lead analysts for the NBA,
and he's got what do you have? You got Oklahoma
City coming up tonight.
Speaker 6 (27:58):
And the Lakers tonight Game one.
Speaker 2 (28:01):
Okay, I don't like when people say the Lakers have
no chance. They are They're on the floor. There are
other teams. Boston doesn't have a chance. You know, there
are a lot of teams that don't have a chance.
The Lakers are on the floor, so they have a chance. Now,
how much of a chance do they have in this series?
Speaker 6 (28:19):
Rich, Look, it's a tall order.
Speaker 11 (28:22):
And look, you could base it off the four regular
season meetings. The average margin of victory for the Thunder
were twenty nine points.
Speaker 6 (28:34):
Having said all that, that.
Speaker 11 (28:36):
Goes out the window because now you start, oh and oh,
but things are going to have They have to play
a perfect series to upset the defending champions. And what
I mean by that is, can't turn the ball over
because that is the number one thing.
Speaker 6 (28:54):
Okay. See, they put so much pressure on you defensively.
Speaker 11 (28:58):
And they have to shoot the ball at a very
high clip, especially from the three, which they're not a
great three point shooting team, and they've got to be
efficient about it because the Thunder they puts so much
pressure on you, they're gonna have to rebound with them.
But the live ball turnovers will be the story in
(29:20):
especially tonight. How the Thunder play defensively because they've got
a number of players that love to kind of get
up under you and disrupt you.
Speaker 2 (29:30):
Who would benefit the most from winning a championship this year?
Speaker 6 (29:34):
Player that's that's still in this.
Speaker 11 (29:38):
Yeah, I think Wow, Jalen Brunson, he was a champion
at Villanova.
Speaker 6 (29:49):
And how the Knicks are playing right now.
Speaker 11 (29:52):
I think there's two teams that are so connected as
these second rounds kick off. That's the Thunder, who are
getting ready for game one. That first round you could
just tell, Okay, we're on a mission to repeat. And
the last four games for the New York Knicks, everyone
thought the sky was falling when it was one to one,
(30:14):
when they went down two one to Atlanta, Oh my god, fire,
Mike Brown, what is Michael Bridge? What is wrong? And
then their last four games have been spectacular. It just
shows me. They are so well connected at both ends
of the floor. They are playing the Thunder and the
Knicks are the two teams.
Speaker 6 (30:34):
Again, I like what.
Speaker 11 (30:36):
Minnesota has done shorthanded. You still have san Antonio on there.
But if you're talking about two teams that are so
well connected, I'm going with the.
Speaker 6 (30:44):
Knicks and the Thunder. Okay, and Jalen Brunton to win
that championship, you're safe.
Speaker 2 (30:47):
So you think it would be more impactful, more important
for Jalen Brunson to win a title than SGA win
another one, Wemby win one, Anthony Edwards to win one.
He's all new, Lebron to win one. What would a title?
Speaker 1 (31:07):
Now?
Speaker 2 (31:07):
Okay might not happen, but if Lebron won a title
this year, what would that mean?
Speaker 11 (31:15):
Okay, Look, he's always in the discussion with MJ correct
and Kobe to a certain extent. Kobe has five chips,
Lebron has four, MJ has six. You can make a
case if Lebron want a chip this year, having to
go through.
Speaker 6 (31:34):
The Thunder, who.
Speaker 11 (31:34):
Are the defending champs And let's just say hypothetically, the
Knicks come out of the East.
Speaker 6 (31:41):
And to go through New York, you can make a
case he is.
Speaker 11 (31:46):
He is the goat at five Chips with three different teams.
Speaker 6 (31:52):
That's pretty remarkable.
Speaker 2 (31:54):
Well, the greatest and the best are yes.
Speaker 6 (31:58):
Totally two different things.
Speaker 11 (32:00):
The best player, in my opinion, is Michael Jordan, the greatest.
If you can make a case if he was to.
Speaker 6 (32:08):
Win, this is all.
Speaker 11 (32:10):
Look, he has an uphill battle, trust me. But if
he was to win and have to go through okay,
see and then maybe winby and our ant man to
win the West, and then maybe the Knicks, maybe Kate Cunningham.
Speaker 6 (32:24):
Yeah, that's that's pretty great, don't you think.
Speaker 2 (32:28):
Yeah, I just don't think Lebron. There's people that are
gatekeepers are not letting him in. They'll never ever acknowledge
that Lebron is better than Mike. And and I say this.
Speaker 6 (32:41):
You're saying better and best versus great.
Speaker 2 (32:44):
I'm saying Mike is the best player. Yeah, Lebron can
have the best resume, and there's a difference in that
it doesn't mean that he's better than Mike. Mike didn't
have the resume that Lebron and Lebron's resume is unapproachable.
I mean, it's incredible what he's done and still doing it.
But if you said, who's the greatest player you ever saw,
(33:06):
it's Mike. So I don't If Lebron wins, it's awesome,
it'd be unbelievable story. By the way, any update on
Luca coming back for the Lakers.
Speaker 11 (33:18):
From what we're hearing, he hasn't even started on the floor,
scrimmaging anything like that, So certainly these first two games
he's out.
Speaker 6 (33:26):
I think we'll probably get more of an update next week.
But here's my thing.
Speaker 11 (33:32):
If I'm the Thunder, knowing that you know Luca may
may not come back in this series, how you approach
games one and two. If you put a beat down
on the Lakers, Luca could probably.
Speaker 6 (33:44):
Say, you know what, I'm good.
Speaker 11 (33:47):
Yeah we're not gonna But if they let the Lakers
hang around, maybe still a game. Now, you're giving the
Lakers life. The Thunder can do themselves a huge, huge
paddle on the back if they come out and take
care of business and set a tone in Game one.
(34:08):
They're the younger team, they're more fresh, and again, every
margin of victory during the four games during the regular
season or twenty nine, you cannot give the Lakers any life.
Speaker 2 (34:20):
I was wondering the I like what Minnesota did bringing
Anthony Edwards off the bench. I got a limited minutes,
let him kind of get acclimated. But I wonder do
you kind of stay with that for this next game
and had that weapon coming off the bench as opposed
to let's rush to insert him in the starting lineup.
Speaker 11 (34:42):
Well, that'll be an ant man decision. Look, they did
what they've already had to do. They've stolen the home court.
My only question was that was would the knee get stiff.
It was a little awkward early on once he got
warmed up, especially in the second half. I think second
he was ant man. I think he was questioning a
(35:03):
little bit of his movements early on. But if it
ain't broke, don't fix it. You won Game one with
him coming off the bench. I don't know why you
wouldn't just go back to that, have that pop coming
off the bench, and then you can start them once
you get back home to Minnesota.
Speaker 2 (35:20):
The Celtics with their loss Jalen Brown's comments saying that
there's an agenda against him that he says some officials
told him there's an agenda calling offensive fouls. Your thoughts
on an agenda against Jalen Brown.
Speaker 11 (35:39):
Well, number one, call names. You can't say some officials
told you that. Call the officials by name, because you're
you're letting that float out there.
Speaker 6 (35:49):
There's no agenda. The Celtics loss.
Speaker 11 (35:53):
Because they refuse to diversify their offense.
Speaker 6 (36:00):
They just lived.
Speaker 11 (36:01):
All they wanted to do was shoot threes. And I
was saying this on a telecast. I don't mind threes.
I don't mind the plethora of threes you shoot, but
it's how you shoot them. If you're getting the paint
collapse of the defense and knocking them out the shooters
and they're missing, that's one thing. All the Celtics were
doing would do a high screen and roll and chuck
thirty footers.
Speaker 6 (36:21):
There's no there's nothing. It's so easy to defend.
Speaker 11 (36:25):
And I just it was frustrating because that's how they
wanted championship.
Speaker 6 (36:30):
But they also had a different roster at that time.
Speaker 11 (36:33):
You know, they had the holidays and the porzingis it
was they had better shooters as well, So there was
no agenda. You guys refused to change your offense. You
just thought you guys can put up fifty threes and win.
And when you're the playoffs. As you know, Dan, you've
been around this game a long time. Once the playoffs hit,
(36:56):
you know, you've got to have a mid range game.
You've got to be able to make tough twos. And
all the Celtics wanted to do with shoot threes and
it caught up to them.
Speaker 2 (37:06):
Can they change, Absolutely, you can change, yes, But are
you going to put Tatum down low or Jalen Brown
down low? They don't have any.
Speaker 6 (37:17):
Plays a great mid range game. Okay.
Speaker 11 (37:20):
I thought a lot of his settling was because of
the Achilles. He didn't have that explosively. Yes, we're used
to Tatum having he wasn't able to drive and play
downhill like he's used to. He was great that he
was back, but I thought he settled a lot in
that series as well.
Speaker 2 (37:38):
Talking to Reggie Miller read on the call tonight, it's
game one in Western Conference SEMIS eight thirty Eastern NBC
in Peacock. It'll be okay see against the LA Lakers.
I'm wondering how you work a referee? How how do
you get your message to the referee without embarrassing him
(37:58):
or having people noticed if it's before during a game.
How did you do it, or how would you recommend
somebody who wants to get a message like Jalen Brown
is telling.
Speaker 6 (38:10):
Us, there's a lot of ways you do this.
Speaker 11 (38:13):
You start even before it jump ball, when you're out
there warming up, both teams are doing layup lines and
all that. You go to the official hay out and
you're doing everything good, good to see you, and you
start setting up a rapport from Hey, everything good, all right,
family's good. Right, this is a hey, great environment. So
you're setting the tone. Hey, let's have this conversation. It's not,
(38:34):
you know, adversarial. Let's just you know, talk about this.
And then every time out or every free throw, hey,
kind of watch this. He's holding me down low, and
you're trying to make it more friendly because if you
show them up in front of fifteen twenty thousand, it's
not going to go your way, especially in the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
What do you make of Draymond Green's comments on his
podcast that Steve Kerr may have hindered his career by
not calling plays offensive plays for Draymond Green.
Speaker 11 (39:10):
Look, I know it raised a lot of eyebrows, and
you know, I heard Austin Rivers and they're going back
and forth.
Speaker 6 (39:20):
Draymond is entitled to his opinion.
Speaker 11 (39:23):
He's a four time champion, and if that's how he feels,
look him and and Steve obviously have a great relationship.
You know, he's been there his whole career. If he
feels that, he has every right to say that.
Speaker 2 (39:39):
Yeah, but Austin Rivers has every right to be count
that critic. I mean, he played in the NBA, So
why can't he say that's silly? Why would you run
a play for Draymond when you have Stephen Clay and
you had Kevin Durant? How did how did Steve Kerr
hinder What was he hindering? Because, if anything, he helped
(40:02):
his career, he made him a star. He said, I'm
intrusting the entire offense that goes through you. How is
that hindering Draymond Green?
Speaker 11 (40:11):
Maybe poor choice of words by saying hindering, because I
don't think they you know, people say you only want
four championships because of Stephen Curry.
Speaker 6 (40:19):
People don't understand You're right.
Speaker 11 (40:22):
The whole offense was being facilitated through Draymond Green, the
way he was finding Clay and Steph.
Speaker 6 (40:30):
So maybe poor choice of words. I'm sure, Draymond probably
just wanted one or two sets run for him.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
No, and Robert Dorry said, the Rockets never ran a
play for him.
Speaker 11 (40:43):
And look how impactful his career was making big shots. Look,
being the facilitator getting those guys off and occasionally making
a three. Draymond, that was your role. And obviously the
defense people forget how great defensively he is. And for
your head coach, Steve Curta, come out and say he
(41:05):
is the best defender I've ever seen. That's he played
with Michael Jordan, Scotti, Pittman, and Dennis Robin. For him
to say that about Draymond Green, that's not hindering.
Speaker 2 (41:19):
But if he played in Sacramento and he averaged nineteen
and ten, like nobody cares about Draymond Green, he became
a Hall of Famer because now his abilities. But also.
Speaker 6 (41:34):
Steve's a lightning Look, he's a lightning rod.
Speaker 11 (41:36):
And whenever he goes on his own podcast and says
these things, but could.
Speaker 2 (41:41):
You rather be Okay, would you rather be Harvey Grant
who averaged twenty two a game for Washington or his
brother who played for the Bulls. Horace Grant is winning
championships cast.
Speaker 11 (41:53):
In point, Mike Drop. It's all about the chips, and
Draymond has four of them.
Speaker 2 (41:58):
Would you rather have Carmelo Anthony's career or Draymond Green?
Speaker 11 (42:06):
It's all about the chimps. They're both going to be
Hall of famers. Mellow is a Hall of Famer already
and Draymond's going to be a Hall of Famer. One
just has four rings and a defensive Player of the Year.
Speaker 2 (42:18):
Ye have the yellow One got to shoot an awful lot.
Speaker 6 (42:22):
That's what was his game though, So you would take
the top ten score. Carmelo is a bona fide bucket.
Speaker 11 (42:30):
But they're both Hall of Famers at the end of
the day, and one is gets to drink bub four times,
don't doesn't to me?
Speaker 6 (42:41):
Chips matter? They do.
Speaker 11 (42:42):
I know a lot of people chips matter. Coming from
a guy who never won one, they matter.
Speaker 2 (42:49):
I didn't bring that up.
Speaker 11 (42:52):
But you're saying, you're comparing Mellow, who to me is
one of the top ten, maybe certainly fifteen scores our
game has ever seen, maybe top ten scorer this game
has ever seen.
Speaker 2 (43:06):
Is see a better scorer than Durant?
Speaker 6 (43:10):
No, but he's in that conversation.
Speaker 11 (43:14):
Durrant Durant might the top five.
Speaker 2 (43:17):
He's going to be on another team next year, isn't he.
It's crazy when you look at Harden and Durant, two
of the greatest scorers of all time. Yeah, but why
do they keep bouncing around? Okay, I don't say it.
Speaker 6 (43:39):
I don't. I don't. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (43:41):
Do younger players not want to play with these guys?
Speaker 6 (43:43):
I do? I Look, I'm not in that Houston locker room.
Speaker 2 (43:46):
Well, it's something happened in that locker room.
Speaker 6 (43:50):
I don't think it happened in the locker room. I
think one of these things his burner.
Speaker 2 (43:56):
Oh did you ever hear that story when Jordan was
retiring with the Wizards and wes Unseld went around the
locker room and asked for, you know, donations to buy
Mike a gift?
Speaker 6 (44:10):
No, keep going.
Speaker 2 (44:12):
Everybody said no.
Speaker 6 (44:15):
No, I refused to believe that.
Speaker 2 (44:18):
Gilbert Arenas just confirmed it this week. Wes Unseld is
on record saying that it was true. Nobody pitched in
any money to get Mike a gift.
Speaker 6 (44:30):
He was probably browbeating them.
Speaker 2 (44:32):
Oh I know he was.
Speaker 6 (44:33):
He was probably, Yeah, he probably was.
Speaker 2 (44:36):
But it's still Mike. I mean the fact that nobody
wanted to give any money.
Speaker 6 (44:42):
For nobody like all fifteen guys.
Speaker 2 (44:45):
We wretch. Wes unseld Is on record is saying that
was true. Gilbert Arenas, who arrived the following year, followed
up on that and said, nobody donated to Michael Jordan.
Speaker 6 (44:59):
Don't I think he needed a gift anyways?
Speaker 2 (45:01):
No, but symbolic though, Yeah.
Speaker 11 (45:04):
But that does that kind of add to the legacy
of mj kind of being an a hole, right right?
Isn't that why his own teammates like Scottie and Horace
and these guys.
Speaker 2 (45:17):
When you're winning. If Mike wasn't winning and he acted
the way he did, oh, true, the bulls wouldn't have
donated any money when when he retired.
Speaker 6 (45:25):
It's all finding Danny.
Speaker 11 (45:27):
All the champagne is bubbling coming down and you're getting
your championship rings.
Speaker 2 (45:33):
Red will be on the call tonight, uh you with
Mike Errico.
Speaker 6 (45:37):
Mike Tarrico, the Great Mike Trico.
Speaker 11 (45:39):
Say his name right, Theodore Wait wait, they're great Mike Tarrico.
Speaker 2 (45:45):
I'm first team olt Rico.
Speaker 6 (45:47):
Thank you. Yes, you guys are co working.
Speaker 2 (45:48):
I worked with him when he got to ESPN. He
was like twenty four. He had hair. I knew you
when you had hair.
Speaker 6 (45:56):
That is true.
Speaker 2 (45:57):
Yeah, a lot.
Speaker 6 (45:57):
Those were the days in the in the early dye.
We could tell something.
Speaker 11 (46:01):
We need to tell some of those stories in the
in the cigar bar, you and you and Mark Jackson,
Oh my dog, you.
Speaker 2 (46:09):
Guys used me as the final judge. You would be
like Montana, No it's Marino holy Field, No it's Tyson.
You guys were going. And then did you ever go
to the Cozy Lounge in downtown Indy?
Speaker 6 (46:30):
I'm sure I did. I probably hit every I don't.
Speaker 2 (46:32):
I don't. This was not it was an all black lounge.
So and you were there, you were I know I did.
I walked in. I walked in. I think I got grandfather,
but it it's one of those like Animal House, when
they walk in they go otis my man? And then
the entire club, all black patrons, turned around. That's what
(46:54):
it was. I walked in with my friend Charlie Mornyhan,
and everybody at the bar turned around like what are
you doing here? And so we had to go up
to the bar and finally I got up there and
I'm thinking, damn, I'm on Sports Center. Somebody better recognize
me here. Soon dude comes over to me and he says, hey,
(47:15):
let me get your beer. I said, yes, yes, that'd
be great. And he said, hey, welcome to club. I
said all right. And then they did the They did
the Soul train where you danced.
Speaker 6 (47:27):
They had the train line.
Speaker 2 (47:28):
I did do the pony down the Soul train line
because because everybody was doing it. Then I go and
the guy who bought me the beer, he goes, uh,
you might want to do it. I go, oh my god.
I said, I'm gonna need a couple more beers, and
then all of a sudden, I rode the pony down
(47:49):
the Soul Train line.
Speaker 6 (47:53):
Nawn loves you. You always have and we always will.
Speaker 2 (47:57):
Reggie on the Call with the Great Mike Nareco tonight
eight thirty Eastern on NBC and Peacock. Talk to you
next week.
Speaker 6 (48:04):
Thanks yank you Theodore
