The by the way, Tampa Airport fantastic. Tampa Bay, Tampa's
airport was fantastic. The entire process of going through that
everything right now, because right now there's some airports across.

we had maybe ten minute times in TSA. I know
other places are hours long. But we we got fortunate there.

Our flight did get delayed, our flight out was delayed,
and the flight after us was canceled. But it wasn't
a big deal. And then the fight home last night
was you know, on time. It was a little bit

of storms going across the sort of Nappalachia and East coast,

and we kind of went around them into Indiana and
back to Detroit.

it was like seventy five and you know Central Ohio
yesterday and it was still like thirty two up here.

Tigers did sign Connor Steebolt and who had the second
highest whift rate in spring training.

to the sixty day injured list with yet another freaking

camp as opposed to his old ninety two ninety three,

his numbers and be very excited about this, but like,
all right, well we'll give it a try. You know,
Scott Harris is going to be hunting the transaction wire,

with the team and until the end of this Arizona

string McGonagall along all this time and then know, camp kid,

we'll see it in a few weeks, like like why
why why? But yeah, he said that they, you know,
the beat writers, were hoping for decisions and hinters like

So yeah, I just have to feel like at least

haven't told the players or announced it yet. And and
Hinch was talking about how like they're not gonna like
it was like he's not going to cut everybody at
like once at one time.

And it was like, Bunches, that's weird, but uh, you
know it's it's a tough part of the job, right
like and and for all these guys, And I think

Remember he used to they would bring up you know,
Jayhan or Badu or somebody from down in Triple winstl Prez,
anybody that was down a Triple A for most of
the year. But they want they bring them up just
so they know that they're part of the team and
they're important part of that. And we'll see we'll see
a lot of these guys that I wouldn't shock me
if we see Cruise and Valencia and how you leave
this year at all.

So oh for sure, Yeah, yeah, I think there's a
good chance. And you know, I mean maybe more managers
are doing this kind of thing, but we know A J.

Hinch is in touch with a lot more of these
guys than any manager I've ever you know, kind of
heard of or been you know, been exposed to, you know,
when when they have a good game or when something's
going wrong. He seems to be in touch with most
of them on the top prospect guys anyway. So he's
establishing relationships with all those guys in camp, you know,
even more so than probably they did last year. And

you know, hopefully that that kind of just helps smooth
things when he does have to have those conversations. But
as we say, like, there aren't very many questions marks.
You know, John Peck's not not coming north and Max
Anderson isn't coming north. I mean, I guess you could
there might be a question about where Peck ends up,
like he could go back to Eerie.

He could certainly go to Toledo.

And play shortsot there because I don't know, maybe Trey
Cruz doesn't play as much shortstop or they mix him around.

Putting, I was actually a little surprised that Max Clark
ended up in Triple A. I kind of thought they'd
give it like a month and let Tray Cruise play
a whole bunch of center field first.

I mean, they might move Max Clark to right field
some you know, to get him used to playing alongside
Park Meto.

I don't know.

You know, there's a lot of different permutations that we know.
They like to mix it up and get guys used
to having to play wherever they wherever they put him in.

So as far as the backfields go, the checkout, they
don't sell tickets to the backfield. You there's some games
that open the public summer, not so for us. We
were luckily enough to get be able to get access
to that and we were able to see how you
lead play on Saturday where he started.

Like Friday, he took bating practice but did not play
a field.

Speaker 5 (10:21):
Yeah he did drills and yeah he didn't play in
the game, but he was there.

Speaker 2 (10:25):
And then Saturday played the simulation game or it's a
simulation game only because they say that go ahead, go ahead, Chris.

Speaker 5 (10:32):
Well, yeah, they're games, but they're not. They keep score.
But they also like the first get the Kenley Jansen
was the starter, right, and that he got he hit
got to like fifteen twenty pitches and they're.

Speaker 4 (10:44):
Like, oh, roll it.

Speaker 5 (10:45):
They just they called the end of the inning, and
now the Tigers are up and and the other like
late on in the game on Saturday, they'll start doing
situational stuff. They'll start an ending with a man on
third and say there's two outs and you got to
teach you how to make that play, and then they'll
keep going with the regular inning. It's it's really interesting
to what they what they do back there. And we
saw that with the drills they were doing. They had

a it was a fun thing they were doing in
field and they had a buzzer and they were trying
to telling the guys to complete the play but you know,
beat the buzzer. I don't know if it's a March
Madnest theme or whatever, but uh so, yeah, they had
them just making you know, regular throwst the first and
then you know, different kinds of double plays and trying
to beat the buzzer, and it was it was fun.

Speaker 4 (11:24):
It was a little competitive action for sort of dreary drills.

Speaker 5 (11:27):
But yeah, a lot, a lot of cool stuff back there,
for sure, if you're into this sort of thing like
we are.

Speaker 2 (11:32):
Yeah, and that what I loved about that too was
a b It was like and then like a and
the sense of urgency was great. But yeah, they were
all were getting into it a little bit and it
was gorgeous weather.

Uh, Saturday and Friday and Saturday.

But yeah, pretty much as daily ninjabuc the wolves not
points don't matter essentially, but what they're doing is just
working on the fundamentals.

You saw this with Brent Herder started a Saturday and
so he got his work in and looked like he
got his what would have been his normal day, and
then he got the hell out of there to make
way for some of the pictures we haven't seen now.

Now, Friday was different because Friday, the high ay and
single A team wasn't Duneeden and the other backfields were
pretty much empty Saturday. On the other hand, the Tigers
were playing. They had the big game or excuse me,
the main game was on field three, and then field
two was like bat in practice and the guys were throwing,

and then the one behind us was I think field
one was also the same thing.

There was there was live VP going on.

Speaker 5 (12:38):
I just I posted all the videos that of that
that I have what's on the YouTube page now, and
some of them are pretty short. Sorry, it's it's the
way it goes. But yeah, like Rochid saying, you know,
the double A triple A game, there wasn't much going on.
We got Kelly Jansen and then we got else. We
get Connor Pilkington and Tanner Rainey and somebody else. Oh,
Brian Salmon's pitch for a third. Yeah, so it was

you know, it was guys we've seen before and not
really any prospects other than like Javiersorio was the DH
that game, and then they got We've got Burdie and
the few later in the game, and those guys just
both struck out very quickly, and it was kind of
that is the one thing we don't have a whole
lot to report from actual hitters during the backfield games,
because they didn't do much.

But yeah, what Roger was talking about.

So we were we were after after herd Or pitched
and then we think who was We think it was
Jack Little. Yeah, it was number thirty five, and we
kept asking players near us. I asked, I asked, I

issues with trying to command that, like, so what it

looked like he was also working working on sequencing and
trying to command his pitches essentially in early in command
and kind. And so he was throwing the curveball, and
it looked like it was that change he throws too.

Yeah, the changes like eleven hundred rpm. It was like
he really kills the spin on that. And and yeah,
I mean that harder pitch I think is a cutter
or spider that like the eighty seven one, because his
curveball is like seventy seven, seventy nine, eighty now, yeah,
and it's that that was a beautiful curveball last year,
right like seventy five, and the Phillies coaches were talking
about it.

is very athletic and a good mover on the mounds.

our what our ranges for pitchers are too, because it
has been hilarious, like with the whole the whole re

But yeah, seeing all those hitters like suddenly two inches shorter,

then meanwhile, so ellis Alt's pitching on the one field,
you got cop and Cruise there, and then over on
the other one it's Cash Kuiper and cal Wiska, who

was the guy that I really wanted to watch too,
pitching to Isaac Pacheco.

Rogers to pitch the Yost.

I didn't see Yost, but I got uh Pacheco, I
got Chris Rodriguez that I got Bryce.

He may have thrown a change up or two, but
I was kind of an offset angle and my gun

a little bit awkward. But yeah, he was another interesting
looking player that we saw. It's kind of you know,
I know of him. I wasn't necessarily expecting anything, but
we saw a little bit of that and and some

We saw he was in Garrett Pennington. We saw in

he came to State side. He got a couple of bats,
six times. Kendrick Hernandez played. He looked interesting, good, the

sort of international players that I didn't know were coming

all last year just because of the injury.

is fascinating. And then was his parents were there. They
were sitting watching him pitch, and I talked to them
for a minute. She's a middle school teacher. And it's
just it's it's nice meeting these people, right, because these
are for the most part, these are just normal kids, right.
They're not like their dad wasn't a big leaguer or whatever.
They just kind of happened to have special skills. And

the parents are always you know, they're still parents. They're
worried about them. They don't want to embarrass them. It's
kind of funny.

kind of give up on him because he's twenty five,
and yeah, he throws hard, but the breaking ball was

pounded the zone all year. It was really the anchor
for West Michigan. So yeah, there's still still a shot

for him. When you throw that hard and could throw
strikes and have a breaking ball year, you're definitely more interesting.

in the miners for as long as he wants. And
then suddenly you've got that pitching ability and suddenly like

Michael in the game at the end, but they kept
the Pirates off the board for the rest of the game.

that he's going to walk, and he's going to hit
for power when he makes contact, and he's a competent defender,
like more than that, right, he's made some really great plays.

thought that might keep him back, is if he just
didn't look like a viable big league defender. And he's
passed every test in that regard. So whatever he has
to learn as a hitter, he has to learn it

against big league pitchers. Like I guess you could go
to Triple A and have that sort of junk ballers
throwing a bunch of change ups and curve balls and
work on that. But then that's the main thing, you see,
is that if you've got a really good breaking ball,
you're probably not in Triple A.

Big if you can throw it for strikes and yeah,
and then spin it consistently. Yeah, And that's and that's
the thing you know, people have been you know, like

foot homer off Luis Evarino. So don't leave that out
of your equations when you when you go to make

the same, it's not that big of a difference. And

forty fifty sixty played appearances is nothing. You know, that's
that's two weeks of games, and every player will have

points through any season as far as you know, batting

Tigers are obviously going to think about it more deeply,

and they've got metrics that we don't, and they see
things and know things that we don't. But I just
don't see any any anything that we you have access
to that says to me that he shouldn't be the
opening day shortstep and you know, play some third base

defender and that's probably a two to three war player
if you if you ran him out there pretty much

longer view and not overreact to things in the spring,

of spring training and watches baseball intently knows that. But
you know it's just something you have to keep reminding people,

One of the cool pickups is that, you know, like
he used to tilt and that was like really like
killing his ability to sync up and and maxed out
his velocity and it was leading to inconsistency. So a
lot of it was keeping there and sort of like
and letting, letting his weight like stay back in. As
he moved back, he would still stay on that side
rather than you know, like like swaying a little bit
or that separation move where guys like start to reach

up too much.

And they managed to clean that up and that's kind
of all it really took to get him back down
the mound a lot better. And you know, getting that

throwing from a lower replete release point than he would otherwise,
and it gives you that flat angle to the top
