All right, Welcome to another episode of Tigers My Report
podcast presented by Fan Duel. I am really because the
only time is just Chris Brown. Brandon days off this
evening as he is regret taking care of well, no,
I'm just kidding.

He's helped out his sister taking care of some dogs,
so he was off this evening. And we'll get heady
for Tigers baseball starting at ten ten, ten or seven
ten on the West Coast as Justin er Lander makes
his first start in three ninety five days. But who's counting?
Apparently a lot of people are as uh yep against

the Diamondbacks this evening, diamond Backs called up a guy
by the name of Jose Fernandez.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
I'm not sure the other the outfielder. Yeah, yeah, he was.
He's been off to he had one of the best
spring trainings of any prospect. I think he was. He's
like he was you know on pipe by he was
like their twenty seventh rank prospect. But he apparently had
a monster spring, so we'll see what happens.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
Yeah, and uh, speaking of prospects, by the way, a
bit of due to Dylan Smith, who was treated to
the Giants for cash considerations. I thought that maybe you
got trade, perhaps get trained for like a catcher or
something the effect because right now Tiger's catching depth right now,
with the amount of injuries to paid, well, the cash

considerations undefeated.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
Well, if you look at it, there's a very interesting
conversation between if you're on Twitter, between Eddie Bye Jack
and or Eddie Bayjack. I don't know. I gave him
a little extra accit there and Mike Smith talking about,
you know, the Tigers are close to the tax threshold
and actually getting one hundred grand in cash considerations. They
can remove that from from that, it just gives them

a little bit wiggled room. It may have been preferable
for them to have that room for more moves than
catching depth in the minors, which they can theoretically, you know,
you can sign somebody from Indie ball, right.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
That's true. No good point. I didn't And any Ajack
knows this stuff. So he's an engineer and he's.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
He's you know, it's interesting I talked before about like
the many the multifarious ways that baseball fandom can can
uh sort of manifest hisself. And for some people like us,
it's following prospects and getting into the analytics. And some people, uh,
you know, love to keep score and go to every game,
I know, every jersey number and stats, and some people

dig way into all the various the ways of you know,
contractual minutia. And Eddie is one of those guys who
gets way into that. He's got you know, spreadsheets that
keep track of every player in the organization, and so yeah,
when there's any issue or question about stuff going on
like this, he's the one that I look to.

Yeah, go to got the Charles Sinking for the five dollars,
he says, I hope a Jacobs mouse McGonagall in the
leadoff spot and Moose Carper.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
Down in the lineup exquisite, Not that I mean, you know,
I mean, that's that's certainly that's That's kind of been
one of the talking points earlier in the season, right
is is you know, Carpenter is batty leadoff and he
just hasn't done anything yet.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
I think if he had been hitting or performing the
way they expect him to, I don't think people would
necessarily much of an issue with it. Also, you know,
it's it's like hitches sort of maneuver right to get
the opposing manager to have to move his starter, and
that just hasn't come up yet. There hasn't it hasn't
happened yet where it's like a stroke of genius. Although

Hinch I did think, you know, outmanaged Craig Stamon. I think, oh, yeah, well,
it's it's yeah, you just see this with with young
managers and former players. Sometimes they don't like, you've got
the bases loaded with Green and was McGonagall after him
or was Green tork in mcgonaga?

Yeah?

Speaker 2 (04:35):
Yet Yeah, and he doesn't bring in Maceon Miller, you know,
the best reliever in baseball because I guess because Mason
Miller is a closer. Uh. And his his response was like, yeah,
we're not ready for him to work more than one inning.
It's like, well, you you know, you get out of
the jam and let Wandy Peralta pitch the ninth or whatever, right,
like yeah, it's it's it's just it's just, you know,

some some guys are just trapped in that old mentality.
And it's a little bit the same way with with batting, right.
I think a lot of managers are still it's certainly
changed right where it's no longer like just your little
speedy slap hitter up front. I wouldn't hate if it's
a guy with a little bit higher on base percentage
than Cary Carpenter. But again, you know, opposing managers aren't

(05:17):
scared of guys who have high on base percentage. They're
scared of guys who have power. And that's the whole
point of having Carpenter first, because he's gonna be the
guy that comes up. He's that's third, the first, So
there you go.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
J Bones said he did terrible in that spot last year.
I think he batted like over two sixty on that
spot from my did research.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Yeah, somebody pointed out that his best numbers were a
second or third, But these are there are always such
small sample sizes that I don't know if it matters
that much.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
Yeah, let me. I'm trouble checking that right now, because
I mean, Jays might be right, and I mean it
doesn't matter, like I personally think he's better towards the bottom.
Bet first, No, he is, he is, Jay is correct, Okay,
it was batting second, I'm sorry, it is correct. His
ops was seven oh five. But he batted two thirty
three uh two eighty and four twenty five, so he

had its worst slugging percentage panning up top.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
So yeah, but also yeah, I again, I don't think
it necessarily matters all that much. I'm sure there's a
different mentality to starting a game as leadoff hitter, but
after that you're just you know, guy's lead off innings
all the time, right, you know, throughout the course of
the year, it's just three games. We'll see what happens, Hench,
this is the way he wants to do the lineup.

(06:29):
I do think at some point we'll see McGonagall move up,
but right now, like there's not really any bad place
to put him. Yeah, it's kind of funny, you know,
thirty years ago, forty years ago, Parker Meadows is your
lead off hitter. Mcgonagle's number two, and then it's it's
Torres and like Green, Torklesen, and Carpenter are all like

(06:50):
number five hitters, if that makes sense. Like that's what
I used to think about, like a number five hitter
back in the day, Like maybe not a ton of average,
but hit for power, driving some runs.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
So I do like what ag said here, hope to
see Hickers use abs more. They could have changed the
game on Saturday early on. Yeah that I know that
talks about that a little bit after the game and
the Tigers are one for two with Hive bias being
the I'm sorry one for one for three. I think
one for three ye one for three.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Yeah. McGonagall challenged and it didn't work. He's he also
challenged in one of the final games in Colorado, the
final you know, exhibition games, and the same thing happened.
It was a ball away from him that just hit
the outside black.

of our list within a month or so, becomc Donald's
gonna not be our list. So we're gonna have we
gotta have two more spots gonna move up on our

So the Tigers again justin Verlander takes around here. And
the Diamondbacks are a team that, I mean, the the
NL West is such a they're off to an own
three starts, so they're looking for their first win. They
have Michael Sorca going for them tonights.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
Oh just they're own three. But they lost three games
to the Dodgers I think at Dodgers Stadium and two
of them were one run games, and the Tigers can
relate to that. They did that last year and we
still came away optimistic about the team after that. So
I wouldn't you know that own three record doesn't mean
much to me. This is still a pretty potent offense
corporun Carroll can tell Marte Carroll's back right after from

his broken hammet. Yeah, I'm looking. Let's see what's their
WRC plus is a team, Well, they're fifty nine right now,
so They're offense hasn't been doing much. The Padres are
sixty six, Tiger's only seventy seven. So yeah, Tiger's offense.

Speaker 1 (11:08):
Is also a very slow start, is uh. That was
one one of the things about the weekend that Kim
ways to one and we're not going to nippick. We
can definitely nip pick a couple of things, but we are.
One of the things that I was talking about this
with Cody on tiger S territory was Cold Keith's good start.
He's four for now, I believe, and he is Batsby's increased,

(11:33):
he's getting harder, and that's those are those are very
good signs really on.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
Yeah, that the Cold Keith bat bat speed increases like
the big league version of our Lucas LSL throw harder
wish in the minors. Yeah, and they both come true
so far. So it's outstanding. Yeah. I I cold Keith
very promising start for him, Torres with a great start,
Deglar with a great start. Mcgonigill obviously, you know, looks

(11:57):
like a veteran, uh, but yeah, the offense is going
to struggle when your three big power bats aren't doing anything.
And that's what happened. You know, Marley Green's putting everything
on the ground, Cropper's not hitting anything. Spark had one
big hit, but yeah, he struck out with the bases
loaded at one time and then the other time instead
of loading the basis. For McGonagall, he it just seems

(12:17):
like he's conditioned to when he walks, reached down and
grab his chin guard and he didn't even think to
tap his head. He talked about it, but yeah, you
gotta tap your head in that situation because it means
the difference between the end of the inning and possibly
bases loaded, Like it's a huge swing point in the game.
And it's just something that these guys I think will
have to get a feel for as a season goes along.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
Yeah, it's just gonna taste some time. And it's still
early on. That's it's going to be a difference. Whereas
so bigut objected over the weekend in Minnesota's manager got ejected.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
Right yeah, yeah, because he thought, and this is what
we're I think we'll see this when we see ejections
for this, it'll be he thought. The guy waited too
long to tap his helmet. You're only supposed to have
two seconds. Yeah, uh yeah, I don't I don't know
what's gonna happen because people are like, why don't you
just make it a full abs And we saw that
in the miners and it wasn't great. In Triple A,

(13:09):
the results weren't as good as you think, Like walks
were way much higher than they wanted and things were
not good. So but yeah, so just you know this,
this keeps the human element in the game a little bit.
And uh, it adds you know, some strategy we talked
about before, like you know, you you waste that. I'm
sure Tork didn't want to waste the challenge in the

(13:29):
first inning, right, but you do it if if it
means you're keeping an ending alive. With the basis load
it you just do and that's something like you said,
they just got to learn.

Speaker 1 (13:37):
That's all overs do it and stand asked with the
umpire takes too long time time before he makes a call.

Speaker 2 (13:44):
Well, you just I mean it's two seconds from whenever
the umpire makes the call. So if it's you know,
if he takes you know, you saw it like I
don't know if you saw the C. B. Buckner you
henne Oslarez thing where he got him on back to
back pitches. Yeah, I mean these umpires they have they
like their strike three calls. It's it's like their signature moment.
And so they're gonna embellish it a little bit sometimes.

And but the hitters can just stand there and challenge,
you know, like.

Yep, the have to said pretty quickly and then repeated it.

Speaker 2 (14:14):
Yeah, well you don't. Yeah, what's interesting. You generally do
not want pitchers to do it at all. We saw
Schooble do it once in spring and he was right.
But the pitchers, it's very rare for them to have
the I assume most pictures think that everything that throws
a strike and and and you know, they're very rarely
landing strike directly to the plate with the perfect view

of the pitch. So catchers and batters, that's it.

Speaker 1 (14:39):
Uh, before we get get back into the questions, I
did want to move on a little bit and move
to Toledo, who off too? Oh three, start yester. We
watched the game. We watch things for anybody who's streaming
with us live yesterday, watch Max Club have a good
game in a double, a single throughout a runner and
he had his third steel. But are not or know

(15:00):
he made a good catch. I'm sorry he's he gunned
somebody down on Saturday. But it was one of those
things that the Toledo comes so we High Valley ties it,
and so then Toledo scores three runs and extra innings.
You think to yourself, okay, this is this is done.

Deal.

Speaker 1 (15:21):
Go comes in, does not throw strike at all, continues
the struggle and hen if he walks somebody then allows
the game winning hit and game over essentially.

Speaker 2 (15:34):
Yeah, you know, it was ugly, Like I feel bad
bad for game al Resch. The first two games the
offense basically did nothing and that was really cold, I think. Yeah,
and they did a bullpen start on game one. Samon's
pitched in Game two, I think he only gave up
I'm trying to remember if that was the game where
the defense kind of let him down.

Speaker 1 (15:52):
Yeah, yeah, he yeah, because the starters overall pitch pretty solid.

Speaker 2 (15:56):
And yeah, and as Charles said, there you know Perez
campaigning hard for winsl Prez is is he doesn't belong
in Triple A. He's a big leaguer. They just didn't
have room for me. He didn't have the spring. So
he's going down there or he's down there, and he's
performing as you would expect the big layer to do
in Triple A. Yeah, and then the offense finally wakes
up on Sunday they have and then it's a series

(16:20):
of like back and forth. Like you said, I think
they took the lead on an error. Actually I think
Clark got on base. Was that the outfielder, Yeah, Young
Young hit a ball to centerfield or sinowfield. We lost
at the Sun, so it ended up as an RBI double.
And then I'm trying to remember who came in the ninth,

(16:42):
But they gave up a run. I think they put
the first two batters on, gave up a run with
one out, and then and then you know, the mud
Hens hit three doubles in the tenth inning, go up
seven to four. You think it's locked up, and then
musut Go comes in and can't throw strike to save
his life. Every fastball was in the dirt, in the
dirt and loan away like he had zero command. They

(17:05):
like you said, he walked in and run, I think,
or there was a hand if he came in, got
a ground ball, or he walked He walked in and run,
got a ground out, and then gave up a two
run single and they lost, walk off loss, zero to three.
Not a great way to start the season. But it's
it's it's it's very strange for as much as you know,
And that's I think everybody thinks of Scott Harris and

(17:26):
remembers his you know, control the strike's own thing. And
Tigers love guys who throw strikes. They keep going after
these relievers who do not throw strikes.

Speaker 1 (17:33):
Yeah, I don't get Jack Little was not good.

Speaker 2 (17:36):
Jack Little was the guy in the night. That's that's
who it was. But like even the guys who have
good arms, like like rig Venasko, you see why they
like him. He's got really good stuff. Not enough strikes,
Summers really interesting stuff, interesting angle. Not enough strikes. I
don't know what it is that. I don't know if
they think they can teach these guys to throw strikes.

(17:56):
But you know, I put it in the slide. I
think they had as a staff they walked like twenty
two and had like twenty seven strikeouts last week. That's
just not going to cut it.

Speaker 1 (18:05):
Yeah, and you know what, the one thing about the offense,
the offense is gonna come around. The weather I think
has something to do with it. So you can you
can sit there and say that all you want. It's
not I'm not. I'm not particularly worried about the offense. However,
I am worried about the pitching because just because like
I just saw your s sheet, Chris, and I just
immediately was like, what the hell. The first I was

looking at the spring numbers of transactions, uh huh, and
it's all like the yeah, you'll see here in a second.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
Let me me did it did it go off the screen?

No? No, no, no, no no, no, it's just a
I wasn't. I was kind of in shell shock. Oh yeah,
that's right here, gentlemen.

Yeah, I tried. I tried to. There were a lot
more a lot of them were like so and so's
assigned to eerie from toiledo, Like well that, you know,
that doesn't count. So I kept it to the injuries
and you know Max Clark and you know that's Sean Henley.

Speaker 1 (19:04):
Yeah, but the the injuries are just like, holy cow,
like just look at this. I mean it's it is
a I don't see he's saying graveyard, but it is bad.
It is really really bad as far as the injuries go. Yeah,
there was a better idea how to look at it.
So which leaves me into is because yeah, you know,

ag that's a good point too. It's caused because they
think they teach him to throw strikes. Charles, I think
with Go Go has the stuff, like his ivy B
was really up. It was like like up nineteen and
he I think there's potential there with him, it's just
he the command is off, and so the reason why
he stockpile all these arms is simply I mean, look

at the look at the il right now. I mean
the igh l is just it's it's just a literal,
just like everybody you can think it was so funny
because we're in the backfields in Florida, We're thinking, like,
we're not seeing a lot of arms that. I mean,
we saw a few few arms, don't get me wrong,
and you can find them on our Patreon report for
paid folks. But I was just like, man, there should

be a lot more more guys out here. They're not,
And so I mean, it's it's the Tigers are just
trying to piecemeal together this for Erie. They signed somebody yesterday,
gentleman from tennis or who was with the Rays. They
were gonna have the We're gonna talk about Erig in
a second, because Erik kicks off their season Friday. The

West Michigan media day is tomorrow. We thought Rayner be
Castillo was handing to Erie, but then they signed this guy.
So it looks like you got a sense of West Michigan.
Said so West Michigan, because there's a via his instagram
or yeah, it's an Instagram. Shout to Jake for that
little bit of intel there. So West Michigan kicks off
on Thursday in Lake County. Wakeland and Erie kickoff on Friday.

in later on. I just think they're just trying to, like,
I don't want to say the throne speaking well, you
know what, I will say this. I think they're trying
to still speak out and I'll see what six I
really do. I see as far as that goes.

There's usually something about all these pictures you look at
and you go, okay, I see what they like about
this guy. There's just there's a reason these guys are
in and and you know, this brings me back to to,
uh Smith, what's it? Smith? What am I? Who am
I thinking of? My brain is Smith? Yeah, I don't

know why. In my head it was like Drew Smith. No,
Drew Smith was like ten years ago. It's it's just
right handed relievers are just there's so many of them.
Because listen, like you know, half the players drafted are pitchers,
and like seventy five percent of them are right handed pictures,
and only a very small number of them become starters

(22:13):
even if they make it, and the rest of the
guys usually they get drafted because they have interesting arms
and like one pitch or two, and so they all
become relievers. And you can just find right handed middle
relievers anywhere and everywhere. They're just always available. It's it's
it's kind of like those nature shows. There's like, you know,
biologically speaking, there's like two ways to have kids right

(22:34):
to propagate the species. One of them is the way
humans do it. You have like one at a time
and you hold out, you're very close to them, and
you pay attention and you keep them alive. Right And
the other option, and this is the right handed picture option,
is you have seven thousand baby turtles and they just
all go to the ocean and you hope one survives.
That's just the way it is with right handed middle relievers.

(22:56):
They like there's so many of them. Sometimes they'll have
a moment and then they disappear. That's just the way it goes.

Speaker 1 (23:02):
As far as answering the question for stangos, by the way,
they can't they hit They hit writers, They hit right
handers for more power, but they hit against lefties had
a higher average, so there will probably be some more
home runs this week against.

Speaker 2 (23:17):
The diamond in Chase Field. Is the ball does travel
well there. Habi Bayaz has crazy career numbers at Chase Field.
I don't know if you remember that from I thought
I remember that from the last time I played there,
like what three or four years ago, when you remember
Riley Green with made like eight diving catches and Hobby
had like this monster series. So h But but also

(23:38):
I think that you know, the Diamondbacks have a few
guys who have pretty good change ups, so yeah, you
don't always necessarily need a lefty with a good breaking
ball to get lefties up. But the Tigers have an
awful lot of lefties, so you would think there's an
advantage there.

Speaker 1 (23:52):
So by the way, the uh so week, Oh, I
like how you put zero point five because technically it's
not a full week as we mentioned earlier.

Speaker 2 (24:00):
Yeah, and we kept running into issues last year where
it was like it's week one here, but week two there.
I'm like, screwt, this was week week one next year,
next week.

Speaker 1 (24:08):
And uh yeah, by the way, that's a good dig there,
nugget there. I did not know Clark was the youngest
player in Triple A or fifth youngest, fifth youngest, but
still that's.

Speaker 2 (24:16):
Yeah, I mean that's that's one of the other things
Like when I was looking at I'm like, people seem
to be forgetting this right, Like they think, like, oh,
he's a bust. It's such a terrible spring and all
the nonsense around him. And he goes out there and
he has a solid week, like he wasn't stinging the
ball until Sunday, but uh, yeah, getting on base, making
defensive plays, stealing base is walking like doing everything you

(24:39):
want him to do. And again, fifth youngest player, and
the other like the four behind or ahead of them
are like it's like cond of Griffin and three other
pretty legit prospects, right, So it's it's he's doing just fine.
He's well ahead of schedule.

Speaker 1 (24:50):
Yeah, especially because if you looked the rest of the
the the outfield outside of Cork Jukes, the Al Jerry
Stevenson all struggled. Uh Maxpert, who was signed who's a
former Yankee farm hand over eleven and that was the
parts of the date. It was frustrating to watch all

(25:10):
weekend because they would put together some really good at
bats and then just could not get the runners over
and then Eduardo Valencia really really felt it. Valencia just
just kind of looked lost out there.

Speaker 2 (25:22):
He looked late on everything to me, And yeah, not
terribly comfortable. It's yeah again, it's three games. It's a
little bit of a mirror of the Tigers offense, right,
Like Clark was doing his thing and getting on base.
Winzeal had a good week, Anderson had a solid week.
But the other big bat, you know, Cruiz, Valencia and
Young they get combined to go two for twenty one, three,
let's say four, four thirty three. Those are the guys

a lot of arms at the lower levels. And how
they're gonna break that out, I don't know. I'm sure

that they're gonna They're gonna have to challenge a couple
of these college guys, I would think, to West Michigan,

for them anyway. Like what Caleb Blaze when we saw him,

think he got to ninety five, had a slider, had
a change up. They all looked solid and he threw

one right there, or they were just doing just BP,

a bunch of names, but I didn't see Dias at all.

Yeah, we and we definitely did pitch, and if he
were back there, he wasn't wearing his jersey or whatever.
But it's it's like I said, it's possible that he
was back there, we just didn't see him. Yeah, And
you know, there were some guys that that were there
and watching the game from behind us in the shade,
and they may have popped up for a little bit

and and who knows, Like honestly, it could have been

maybe he was with the traveling party the first day
we were there, and maybe I'm sure guys have certain

We saw him in the spring breakout. They were they
were you know, felt comfortable putting him in in that game. Uh,
and he was very aggressive. And then I saw we

with Whisk I need to figure out I should have

he did he he he swung and missed at one
of kell was breaking balls which I thought were really impressive,
Like it was something that I don't think he really
had last year. He was very limited sample size from
Keltis last year in Lakeland, and he had he showed
the interesting looking at fastball and he's changed up, has
like great shape on it. It's like a split change,

very low spin but I didn't see in terms of
the breaking balls, but he was throwing a cutter and
like a slurve that both looked really good. He got
Rodriguez swinging on a slurve. Not necessarily a huge bonish
to get an eighteen year old swinging at a bricking ball.
But then Rodriguez smoked a fastball to the left field,
So the powers there. If you throw something straight, he's
gonna crush it. But I do think that, yeah, he

will likely be in the FCL and then you know,
toward the end of the year he'll pulled a Jude
Warwick and pop up to like Lynd and see what happens.

So one of the arms I'm really intrigued, you know,
grease and Grinsell is a guy who will be interesting
where he starts off at. Maybe it'll start Laquin, but
the arm that I'm really stilled for that I think
that he's surprised a lot of people who I think, again,

is something that I uh for whatever reason, I don't why,

I just do. But Grinzil is the guy that I'm
kind of excited to see whether how he contributes I
don't know. I would like to see him, but I'm
still high up on Lays. I think there's a lot
to like about Lays only because his numbers actually got
back from surgery were really promising. He pitched well in
the Cape Cod League, and so I don't know, I

think there's just going to be a matter of like
the tankers are due for some sort of you know,
I don't say luck necessarily, Chris, but there's so many arms,
as we mentioned earlier, in the lower in the lower tier,
that they kind of need. They need at least three
three of the ten or fifteen they have down there
to at least do something. Because you look at Eerie,

you look at Toledo right now, and it's I'll be honest,
like Eerie's just kind of a mess when it comes
to pitching.

they all get injured. So they went to college rout

you know, the most impressive pure arm. But we've we've liked,

that that we think can move fairly quickly. I you know,

it's it'll take us a while to figure out the
ceilings of all these guys. But it reminds me a
bit of back in the day when it was Madden
and Smith and herd Heer. We're like, yeah, all these
guys are gonna be big leaders. Like you could tell
pretty early. So hopefully, well we'll know by like May
or June, Like, yeah, these are big leaders.

Speaking of big leaders. By way, Chase Burns strong debut today,
five squirrel sittings just did not give up a hit
until the fifth inning and kept the Pirates off the
board and they won two nothing. He allowed one hit,
that was it, and then he struck out seven, walked three.
So the Reds have. Reds have a sneaky good farm system.
