Speaker 1 (00:00):
I don't have to do a game.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
This game rcap.
Speaker 1 (00:05):
Oh, I'm sorry, I.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Offensive exploson. Welcome to another episode of Technodical Report podcast.
Here take us. I'm Report dot Com, I'm a hell
seal and Sims Chris Brown Brandon should be along with
the shortly as bull brisk is about to enter the game,
which makes me extremely nervous as the Tigers are up
now ten to five here as the eighth thing is
the bullpen is a hodgepodge mix of arms as the
(01:13):
injuries have completely affected the back end of the bullpen.
And that's that's not an excuse, that's as facts, but anyway,
it is right though, Hei Lee had a good game.
Film Danglar care Carpenter carry Carpenter was a straw straw
that stirred the Tiger's drink. Is he definitely needed to
(01:33):
him going out the game on Saturday, and he left
after a second of bat And I was wondering why
he left so early, because I thought, you get he
was the agent, so I thought you get maybe another bat.
Maybe it was a cheaper flight out of Chicago quicker enough,
but either way, it helped. It has helped the Tigers
immensely right now as they're looking to erase a six
and twenty two record in the month of May, and
(01:56):
the doom and gloom is here. You can tell about that. Look,
if we want, let's just say this, the Tigers doing well,
we do better, We get more downloads, we get more donations.
Those things help, as Charles, thank you very much, well timed,
they're Charles.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
I think he's gonna be just fine.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
No no, no, no, no Sky Harris, No Sky Harris Scott,
No Sky Harris has been banned for a minute.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
Here, Oh, Charles is at the game. Awesome. That must
be a really fun one to go to.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
Yeah, that's awesome. Yeah we have we have another another
podcast or another guy who knows chreams Shipman from the
mid Days. We're back, Jed, Yes we are. We are
back at the moment, as of course. Jim Camerlaer walks.
Look bow Brisky is a prop like that's the same
Rowl Risky for three years ago.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Yeah, I mean this is the exact sort of game
that they needed, everybody needed, with the exception of the
bullpen managing to make no lead feel safe. No, like
the number of times you've you've played out the scenario. Well,
Finigan is just gonna walk the basis loaded here for
Kevineo hit a grand slam to go ahead. Unfortunately, Dingler
and Lee and Green just keep hitting. But yeah, bow Brisky,
(03:08):
I mean, he didn't look great when he was in Toledo,
and they brought him up because they don't. They don't.
We've discussed this a bunch like that. They're running out
of options and they traded got rid of Sea Bowl
and so now you've got guys you can bring up
and down like Venasco. But they are very good. So
you know, if Brisky could somehow find the late twenty
(03:30):
twenty four magic, that would be great. But we've seen
that a lot of the guys who had the magic
that year just kind of went away, Like you know,
Hanna Fee got there, it's just kind of gone.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
Yeah, Ryan Valerie decided to you know, hey, I'm doing
something that I didn't do in Detroit. That's cool.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Yeah, I mean he's having he's having a really good
year for them. That's that's that is kind of annoying,
But he is. He's one of the he's like a
really good dude. So I'm not going to complaine too much.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
No, No, he's the god dude, good stuff. Yeah, no,
fantastic guy. Just wish it was then that here.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Well he I mean he came through a little bit
for the Tigers, right, it was just like, you know,
no he didn't. He had one home run for the Tigers.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Yeah, you know, I think he had a home run
one of the first games he was called up after
he got to Ted from Toledo.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
I believe.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
Let's take a gander, uh speaking in Toledo, by the way,
we uh actually it was. This was the first time
in a long time that I wanted to give a
thanks a shout out to the new PR person down there,
Fred Gentleman's name. And I'm really really bad but that
I'm really sorry, but I didn't meet the onfield host
(04:40):
Hannah Russo, who is who went to school with Edward
Espinal the yeah yeah uh uf and we we got
like I was listening to the game. I was listening
to Lakeland game, watching the Toledo game, and she goes,
are you are you watching the Lakeland game. I was like, yes,
it was just kind of and that many people the observation.
(05:02):
She said, oh, you know, blah blah blah, blah blah
blah blah blah blah. But she was just talking about like, oh,
she went to the UCF and she was talking about
her experience, which was really cool. And then she was
watching the uc IF played Milwaukee. And I didn't realize
that Wisconsin because the University Wisconsin disbanded the team in
nineteen ninety one. And it was surprised to see Milwaukee
(05:25):
actually have a baseball team because I don't think that
I think there's only college in Wisconsin to have college baseball.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
I believe, well, I mean there are like D two
and D three schools because Jeordan Zimmerman was like Wisconsin, Whitewater.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Like in terms of D one schools, I.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Member, yeah, yeah, I mean I you would think we've
talked before about and we talked with Max Clark about it, right,
like about the amount of good baseball players that are
coming out of Wisconsin these days. You would think that
Wisconsin would have a baseball program. But especially you know,
now the Big Ten is well, UCLA did not do
the Big Ten any favors, but the Big Ten it's
(06:00):
you know, it's a nationwide conference. Now you've got get
some baseball street prestige in there, so I don't know.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
And Auburn, I mean Auburn got punched them out to Milwaukee.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
Yeah, I mean there's been some was it Little Rock
when their bracket, Like, there's been some some You know,
the college baseball tournament and World Series is always really
really fun, lots of great stories and underdogs and eventually
get two really good teams at the end. And uh,
you know, the way the Tigers have been playing, you
might want to pay attention to some of the sophomores
(06:32):
in this year's college World Series.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
But yeah, yeah, speaking of Espanol. By the way, I
meant to say that we have a scotriport Him and
Zappa battle over Tiger's page round. So if you're a
paid member, you got those reports this morning. More stuff
on the way.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
Oh no, I just said, like half the McDonald family,
uh paid paid to get that scout reported. I'm like, hey, good,
I know.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
So yeah, see, yeah, thank you shout out to the
McDonald family from Porters, Michigan for doing so. But yeah,
we're cranking those out and getting things going. But look,
let's just let's talk about the month. The end of
this month and or end of how the I can
I talk this evening. I went to go cut my
grass before during the game and we whacking, and my ay,
(07:17):
like my allergies are like I took my pill. I
took the like I have the whole entire nose spray.
Didn't matter. It's just been throwing me up anyway. So
I just wanted to talk about the series in Chicago.
Tigers had two chances to win. They had a quality
start from Tyder Montero, and I want to start with
a Montaro start because I just want to know Chris why.
(07:39):
I know this is yesterday's to the past. The Tiger's
winning ten to five, But I just want to start
through because Montaro looks like a picture who has figured
things out. He didn't have his you know, he only
had I think like six swings and misses. But his
command has been better. He's been sequencing better. That slider
he used it on the front side, backside, uh, which
(08:00):
is what it was really moved by the way. I've
noticed the Tigers pitchers. It might be just me, but
they're throwing more a lot more back toward sliders, like
Man threw a few tonight too. But my question is Chris, why,
I know Hint answered the question. He gave the relate
the matchup answer, but come.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
On, yeah, I mean I think I think, really it's
just with the way that everyone's been playing and the
way things have been going, they're they're all just trying
too hard, right, and the Hinch is just trying to
you know, I think he knew that his offense, you know,
was very unlikely to score another run, so he was
(08:38):
doing whatever he could to try to, you know, piece
it together. But yeah, it it doesn't make a whole
lot of sense when a guy is pitching well. But
that's the that's the the calls that managers make, right,
Like it's always a double edged sword because you leave
them in there. I don't think anybody would have complained
that he left him in and Montero gave up a
run because he was at sixty five pitchers or whatever.
But I'm sure somebody would have been like, hey, look
(09:00):
at this third time through the order. Stuff. It's ultimately
they lost because they scored one run. Right, I don't
win when they scored one run, but yeah, it was
it was and you could say, like, you know, today
he Matt looked like he lost it, So that was understandable.
But then he's you know, playing the matchups in like
the fifth and sixth inning like it's a playoff game.
(09:21):
He just really wants to get a win, and sometimes
that leads you to try too much. It leads to
guys trying to take an extra base and getting thrown out,
or trying to steal a base and get thrown out,
just all these mistakes, you know, trying to turn a
double play when they shouldn't. Everybody's pressing, including the manager.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
Yeah, and look a lot of that losing can do
take a toll on you. And by the way, Brandon's
on his way in. Sorry, it was a it's up
on does the signal there? Or on the linky guy?
But yeah, Risk is also barely hidden like his sinkers
at ninety I mean, that's that's not gonna that's not.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
Gonna cut it. I think that that is probably being mislabeled.
That's probably his change up. Okay, let me look at that.
Speaker 3 (10:01):
No, No, you're you're right, because the four semer comes
at ninety five.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
You're right, Okay, that could be Yeah, it's yeah, he
hasn't pitched him in a long enough time for them to.
You know, it's just automatic for the first few inningserve
pitches or whatever.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
And what's in a dangerous part about this lineup too,
Tampa can hit. Really, you know it's Tampa is a
team does not give up. I mean it. They have
a scrapping as the White Sox. And look the White
Sox this weekend even without I'm trying to say this, Marikami,
We're able to because Miguel Vargus and I said this
(10:36):
on the podcast on Thursday when we had Crystal on.
Miguel Vargus is a completely different hitter. You have Cole Montgomery,
who is a really good hitter too. I mean that
they all he is. He doesn't hit for average, but
man does he hit his for power. He had four.
I think he's at thirteen fourteen home runs and that
was It's a White Sox team that's going to be
I think a pain the ast to Cleveland. I really think.
I really think the White Sox have enough pitching to
(10:58):
beat Cleveland.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
It's a really interesting contrast and styles there because the
White Sox are really just slept in the hell out
of ball, right. You mentioned Bargus is hitting a bunch
of home runs Montgomery Murcami before he got hurt. He
may still be top five in home runs once he
comes back in four to six weeks. But yeah, we know,
we're intimately familiar with the annoying brand of baseball Cleveland plays,
and that's not necessarily the way the White Sox play.
(11:20):
But but yeah, I mean, Anthony k looked really good.
You're getting pitching from nowhere? It does it Suddenly it
feels like Chris Chris gets has put something together there,
like they seem not only the big leaguers, but Jacob Gonzalez,
who looked like a bust like almost immediately in the draft.
Was that the twenty three draft I don't remember. Yeah,
but he's breaking out like crazy this year. I think
(11:42):
he has the most home runs in Triple A. And
they call him up because first hit against the Tigers.
So they're doing a lot of stuff right there. Now.
We thought the Tigers were doing everything right like two
years ago, last year right. And sometimes these things can
change out a dime. But right now it's a good
time to be a White Sox fan for sure.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
No, And you know what, who really impressing history was
Sean Burke. Burke six strakeouts his stuff looked really good.
His stuff was moving all over the place, and that,
you know, it's a kind of an I don't want
see necessarily no name Bullpen, but from the you know,
Brian Hudson, the hell is that guy that's just come
out and shove it a little bit too? And then yeah,
as Mitchell said, add Rock and Caleb Bromer to the mix,
(12:20):
sooon too. This is this is a White Sox firms.
And that's dare say better than it's better than the
Tigers because they're actually first, almost like Chris.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
You know, but this is this is the branded day.
I don't know the theorem going back. And of course
it was under the old old regime, right that that
White Soax would always get a bunch of talent and
then managed to squander it and they have to trade
it off. It doesn't look like they've done that this time.
But let's say got some real pieces from trading and
Crochet and the other guys. Yeah, and you know they
(12:53):
got Quero and deal feels hurt, but they got good
young players. It just about every position. And yeah, they're
probably gonna take Rock called Chilowski. I would think so.
And you know Bontomer is very promising. He does have
like a thirty five percent strikeout right to go along
with a ton of home runs. So I don't know
what's gonna happen once he gets double A. But yeah,
like I said, it's fun for the White Sox. And
(13:13):
of course, of course the Rays always have good prospects,
and they're annoying right now Becauseigers can't throw the strikes.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
Yeah, Basis loaded one out right now as ten to
five Tigers in the bottom of the eighth inning and
wol vest Is in the Basis loaded, which is not
It was a bad result earlier in the week with
against the Angels and the whole thing, and so one
of the things I wanted to get your commentary about
was so over the week the Jim Cosa story about
(13:41):
him making fun of well, you know, kind of giving
will Win still pres the business because with the his
with basically the home runs showing on his Instagram, not
realizing that perhaps and this is something I called out
that in that culture, that's the only way people can
see games. His parents didn't se him play UNTI was
in the Mimican Republic. I know it was back and forth,
(14:03):
but it's gotten really ugly, and but I wanted to
get your I haven't really talked to you guys. I mean,
I've talked to you Chris about this, but I've had
a chance to talk to Brandon about this whole thing.
And look, win steal Prez is what he is. He's
not He's not good. There's something definitely off with him.
He's been the worst player on the Tiger team in
terms of war. But I just I don't know, was
(14:23):
that blown out of proposals. That's just kind of a
ridiculous thing in the first place.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
I mean, I thought it was kind of a dick move.
I mean, you know, like go after the people who
built the team, you know, go after There's plenty of
things you can go after with the Tigers, like going
after a utility outfielder who you know, posted a clip
of himself hitting a home run, like, you know, I mean,
there's better things you could be doing with your time
that would actually like be relevant to anything, you know.
(14:48):
I mean it's awkward because yeah, you know, he dropped
a ball against the wall, heard him really bad that
night after the home run. But you know, when you're
grinding as a major league player and we know, Wenzel
Perez has been a pretty solid hit for two years running,
really struggling this year. Maybe he saw to himself, you know, okay,
here's my opportunity. They really need me put too much
(15:08):
pressure on himself. I don't know, but for whatever reason,
it hasn't gone well. And you know, I mean, players
have to have to fire themselves up. They can't go
home at night like I sucked at this, I sucked
at that, you know, I mean, it just doesn't. It
just doesn't work that way.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
You know.
Speaker 1 (15:22):
Players have to have to play the game day to
day and they need to get there. You know, they
need to kind of take something from when they do
something well I assume will best just well not will best,
but bow Brisky basically loaded the bases and they blew
it right.
Speaker 3 (15:34):
Yeah, it was as a lot of double now it's
ten to seven.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
Bouncer that Keith couldn't Yeah, it wasn't an easy play,
but he played the hop, the short hop into a
deflection in a felt territory. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
So we never we never, we never never got comfortable,
never got comfortable. You know when we when they were
up eight too, it was just like all right, well,
how how exactly are they going to lose this? You know,
but that's where we're at because winning games doesn't really
do anything to the Tigers at this point either. We
just want to see them, you know, like I think
the ideal, I don't know if you guys talked about
this already, but the ideal is that they would just
(16:12):
play five hundred ball now, like be relatively entertaining, not
not infuriate us on a night to night basis, but
not do something stupid like win eight games in a
row and suddenly think they've played themselves into it, and
then they don't sell and then we missed the playoffs.
Like it's time to face reality, you know, like this
this season is cooked, and you know, I want to
(16:32):
see them play better baseball because watching this sucks. But
you know, but here we are, you know, I mean,
they just don't They don't have a bullpen once again.
You know, there's just like we're depending on Will vest
who had like a cortisone shot in his forearm like
three or four weeks ago. They've leaned on him hard
the last couple of years. They've worked Tyler Holton into
(16:53):
a tent peg at this point, after you know, three
years in the in the bullpen, being the workhorse, and
they haven't found anybody. They haven't found a single thing.
And you know, we can tell better than anyone outside
of the system. There's just not anything in the upper miners.
There's jack all up there. There's just nothing. You know,
Andrew Sears is working his way back, Jake Miller is
in the injury ether along with you know, ninety percent
(17:16):
of their other pitching prospects, where we don't even really
know what's going on with them. You know, they can't
they can't find pitching for whatever reason. This is the
fatal flaw of the Scott Harris regime. And it's sort
of the inverse of Alavila, you know, in a way,
Alavila left them all this pitching and they're still like
just desperately feeding on it, trying to stay trying to
(17:37):
stay alive. You know.
Speaker 3 (17:39):
Yeah, It's what's infuriating is that every once in a
while you see an international reliever come up and do
something and Tigers even have had none of that at all.
And that's even worse.
Speaker 2 (17:51):
And uh yeah, yeah, and I got Yondi Diaz up
with as the go ahead run. Certainly he won't hit
the ball very.
Speaker 1 (18:05):
Haigh, Yes, let him have it. I agree with everything.
Speaker 2 (18:13):
Just just remarkable. Let's let me count the number of
walks from the bullpen real quick.
Speaker 1 (18:18):
Yeah, okay, And they called up bow Brisky and he
was doing nothing down there, you know, and had just
gotten back. That was just a rush job.
Speaker 2 (18:25):
Six six walks from the bullpen and what is this winning?
You know? Two from Madden. They pulled him because he
looked like he lost it, which is we've seen that
from Madden throughout the years, where he will suddenly just
lose his own We used to see that from Montero
as well, but he seems to straighten that out. But yeah,
I don't know, this.
Speaker 1 (18:45):
Is I'm all right, I'm watching now. I got to
see how how this happened.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
This is uh yeah, I mean it's pretty exemplar, exemplary
of of just you know what it's like to be
a Tiger's fan right now, right like you score ten runs.
Even when you do that, I think they're now three
for thirteen with runners in score position. They were one
for nine, so they weren't They was all runs.
Speaker 1 (19:05):
Yeah, and desperately cleaning clinging to a lead.
Speaker 2 (19:07):
Now, yep, you got fourteen hits and he had ten runs.
They're rady to have nine runs on eight hits and
if they get one more hit, no, who knows.
Speaker 3 (19:16):
But yeah, the defense is not helping at all. And look,
Costo's I don't know if Costo's right. Everybody else has
been right. I mean, Costos, I don't know if he
was taking was right about Pres. I mean we all
know Pres is not that good. But regardless of what
this team is, this team is like the one thing
we've been saying the entire time since the beginning of
the year. They need death, they need another bat. No,
(19:40):
they're fine, Hie, they're fine. Okay, cool, because I went
down and I went to you know, I saw Tannon
Riley pitch ninety six, ninety seven, but he walks to me, guys,
oh no, oh god, no, dude, Well what's just happened?
Speaker 1 (19:55):
Oh man, you'll see good lord?
Speaker 2 (19:59):
Yeah, maybe already did.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
Man a little?
Speaker 2 (20:06):
How you lee? Situation just just always at the right
time right whenever? They they just they can't I don't know, man,
Like yeah, like all right, maybe maybe if it takes
a game like this for you for them to really
just go all right, pack it in guys like this
(20:27):
is not happening.
Speaker 1 (20:28):
Yeah, if if if there were people who hadn't packed
it in already, like.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
Yeah, well, I mean the fan the fans have, yeah, team,
you know, the team still.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
Wants to think they can get back into this somehow.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
Yeah, I mean they're they're they're in the flophouse, so
you're not going to give up in there. I remember
you remember what was the year that, I think twenty
fifteen where they sold and Ian Kensler was really pissed off. Yeah,
oh god, how you Yeah he made he.
Speaker 1 (21:02):
Made he made such a nice play earlier. You know,
we're trying to like celebrate every good thing anyone does
because there's it's so few and far between. But you know,
you know it's gonna bite you eventually.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
Were bringing in They're gonna bring in Emanuel de Hayesu's
here for the ninth who's left?
Speaker 1 (21:18):
Yeah, really, I think that is about it? Or or
they're gonna use Anderson again, which, yeah, what is going on?
And I don't even know if Emmanuel de Haysuse is
healthy or you know, what's going on with him because
he hasn't pitched in like at least a week. I
haven't seen him.
Speaker 2 (21:33):
Well, I mean, if they get another hit here, then
they won't they won't need to pitch the ninth. Yeah,
it's remarkable. But yeah, this is uh, this is like, yeah, at.
Speaker 1 (21:48):
Least I feel safe, like, Okay, you know, we're not
gonna like they're not just gonna flip a switch and
the curses lifted and all of a sudden they're gonna
play good for a while.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Funny, you know, the calendar flips and yeah, suddenly just
power galore. Riley Green hits his first home run hit
none in May and just like I'll do it immediately. Yeah,
but yeah, I mean you still have Keith and Torkleson
still look really rough. The Digglers, you know, had an
awesome game. McGonagall did his usual thing.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
Yeah, I think, so we want to be happy, Like
if we want to be happy, Dylan Dingler is maybe
turning into the best catcher in baseball, probably.
Speaker 3 (22:25):
The best catcher the Tigers had home runs since Lance Parish.
Speaker 1 (22:28):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, I think pretty comfortable, you know. Yeah,
without Ala Tavilla had a had a nice little little
run for a year or two until he get punched
in the face too many times by fall balls. But
I'm glad to see that he does, you know, still
doing well, and because I always worried about Alex Goula
for that reason.
Speaker 3 (22:45):
Selcy Pork Chops eighteen. What is this shit show we're watching?
You know what?
Speaker 2 (22:51):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (22:51):
I don't I don't know what it is. I mean,
I'm literally trying to run the show and just you know,
Matt Notas was pretty good, but he wasn't homegrown. He
was he came over from the Giants. I came over
and trade for the Giants.
Speaker 2 (23:03):
Technically, you want homegrown catchers. It's basically a veline hinge, right,
like you even stretch though. I mean Ryan, I mean,
I'm trying to think Grayson Griner was James mccannon. He
didn't make an All Star team outside of the trade.
Speaker 1 (23:25):
Yeah, yeah, you know, he occasionally could hit.
Speaker 3 (23:29):
Oh, I know you're talking salty.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
I know you're talking about the Tigers.
Speaker 3 (23:31):
I know you're talking about the Tigers. I know we're
watching the same thing, and we're just kind of we're salty.
We're with you, man, I'm I'm trying to I'm just
distracting myself by watching this crap show while trying to
do the show.
Speaker 2 (23:42):
So did they did they just lose their final challenge?
Speaker 3 (23:46):
That's a good question. You know what I haven't asked
this question. Was the last time the Tigers hit their
last team hit five home runs and lost.
Speaker 2 (23:54):
I could take a check. I could check real quick.
I was because I was looking at the Tigers had
five home run games twice last year.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
But Liam Hicks also technically him. The Hicks technically came
from the Rangers.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (24:07):
Yeah, not homegrown and not nearly, you know, anywhere near
Dingler's defense. Obviously they should have kept him. I think
we all recognized this fact. I think most of it
thought at the time it was a little bit weird.
You just traded for the dude. You traded Carson Kelly,
who you should have kept. Yea, And now we have
Carson Kelly and you could have traded Jake Rodgers and
maybe you could have gotten Liam Hicks then. I don't know. Anyway,
(24:29):
I'm not mad about it. It's all good.
Speaker 2 (24:32):
Well, it was. It was an odd one because as
a prospect that like, there were two things on him
right that that he wasn't a great defender and he
didn't have power. He was on base eye he could
put the ball in play, and then you know, he's
hitting all sorts of home runs at the highest level,
and I think they mostly played him at first base.
Speaker 1 (24:49):
But yeah, and he's not terrible, you know, defensively, like
if he was your third third catcher, you'd be like
perfectly content. But yeah, he's basically a bat. But still
we could certainly use a bat from.
Speaker 3 (25:00):
Our Discord Brandon says, Roger Chris are not running a
Simpsons podcast. I don't know what that means. I'm trying
to get some clarification and pat from old friend the show.
It feels like episodes of YouTube now should be Helly
and Chris just taking turns doing shots until one passes out.
Speaker 1 (25:20):
Okay, that's that's what Latin at Tigers is like. Stuff.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
So the last team to hit five home runs in
a game and lose was the Washington Nationals on September
twenty sixth of twenty twenty five. They lost ten to
nine to the White Sox. Get five home runs and lost.
Speaker 1 (25:38):
All right, well, we got a one run lead going
into the ninth, but Will Beth is probably spent. I
would imagine having to clean up that debacle.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
So they actually hit six home runs and lost.
Speaker 1 (25:48):
Oh really, wow, that's how Josh Bell.
Speaker 2 (25:51):
Luis Garcia Junior hit three. Luis Garcia hit three home runs.
C J Abrams with one Dayalen Lyle with one.
Speaker 3 (25:58):
So we get the teledo and everything else. Let's go
but the show back on stream a little bit. I
do like this question. You're from Salty, he said, real talk,
What was the fascination with y Lee? When you have
Max Anderson who can try out? We has proven he'sn't ready. Look,
I will say this, I watched Max Anderson play third
the other day on Saturday, and he made some really
(26:18):
like he made a really good play jumping to his left,
ranger his left and get the guy at first. He's
actually better at third than Jason Youngins, at least in
my opinion. That being said, though he struck out three times,
I think his aggressiveness at the big league level will
carry over a little bit. Him and Hoyuli are almost
the same in that way because Anderson doesn't walk that much.
(26:40):
As far as hitting for velocity and all that stuff.
There is where the problem is. You look at some
of his baseball, some on Salty. Look, there's nothing wrong.
I think that's a good idea. It's just the problem
is that what I what I worry about is that
if he comes up here gets overwhelmed. You know, he
might start having a good two week stretch, but then
when teams start figuring out that they could just he's
gonna and everything if you show them at the plate.
(27:03):
For sure, the only guy I think that I saw
Ben Maljuriy had a home run. I think mal Jerry
out of all the guys, it's all I have been
watching a lot. Toledo Clark's a little bit of time.
Give Algeria a shot, I honestly don't think. But give
Ben Maljerry is not a bad idea either.
Speaker 1 (27:19):
Yeah, I mean you could try it. I mean I think,
I think. I don't know if you guys would agree,
but I still think how You Lee has a brighter
future than Max Anderson does. I mean how You Lee
just turned twenty three. You know, he's a he's a
much more athletic player. Obviously he boned to play there,
but defensively he's he's got the chops like if they could,
you know, and the and the just the basic tools.
If they can clean him up a little bit further,
(27:40):
and he has some patience. Obviously he has similar flips,
you know, swing flaws as well. You're not gonna you're
not really gonna get anywhere by trading or by flipping
Max Anderson for how you lee Labor Torres is probably
gonna be back a couple of days. Maybe this is
all a moot point anyway. But for Max Anderson, like
you'd like to see him get real hot, you know,
that's all it is. I mean, how you he didn't
(28:00):
really get that opportunity. They were just like, good lord,
we need an infielder. But and he's been here for
over a month now as a result. But you know,
that was mostly supposed to be like your first look
at the big leagues and then we send you back
down as soon as someone is healthy. In my estimation,
he wasn't really ready either. And yeah, I mean, I mean,
if you want to try Max Anderson, that's fine, but
my expectations are are pretty low. For Max. It's good
(28:22):
to hear that he's playing a little better defensively. He's
obviously known that he needs to work on that. It's
just tricky because you'd like to put Max Anderson at
first base and hope that he hits, but he's too short.
He just doesn't sort of fit there. So yeah, I
mean they're both just kind of awkward fit, you know,
role player types. They're not Neither one of them is
(28:43):
going to come up and save you or help you.
Not that anything is not that that's really even the
point anymore, because I don't think they can be saved,
and I don't really want them to be saved. Fundamentally,
I want them almost to tank. So at this point,
like I just don't see any any any turnaround there,
so they might as well. But I would like to
see the Tigers do is just go back to you know,
playing the kids, being creative, not locking people into roles.
(29:07):
Tell Kenley Jansen, sorry, you're not you know, when he
comes back, You're not the closer, you know, You're We're
just gonna use you in whatever role makes the most sense.
We're gonna go back to doing things the way we did.
You know, we tried some things, you know, blah blah blah,
because Scott Harris was shocked to find that he had
a contender almost on his hands and didn't really want
to do a whole lot about it. And you know,
(29:27):
we're kind of back to square one. Where they're they're
gonna have to build around what they've got, and they're
gonna have to find a ton of pitching. Like if
there's a good argument to fire Scott Harris right now,
and I would be okay with that if they did,
it's that they they just can't seem to find any pitching.
You know, you can find an individual reason for every
single pitcher that's gone wrong or everything that hasn't work.
(29:48):
But you know, at the end of the day, you
don't have enough pitching, Like, what are they going to
do next year? You have to trade Schooble and Mize
for starting pitching. You still don't have a bullpen. There's
no real obvious bullpen arms, you know in the upper levels,
Like maybe Moyses starts throwing strikes and you've got kind
of your Jason Foley type, or yeah, maybe Tanner Rainey
figures it out. Maybe Cole Waits comes back from the
(30:10):
from the dead of you know, Scott Harris's all the
players I've had before, Rollodecks and you know, starts throwing
hard again. But you know, I mean those are all
just like you know, grasping at straws type things. You know,
they're gonna be dependent on the exact same guys.
Speaker 2 (30:24):
Next year.
Speaker 1 (30:24):
You're gonna be dependent on vest and Finnegan, You're gonna
dependent on Holton and Herder, maybe Anderson and de Jesus,
who have shown like at least some flashes, you know,
get more consistent as they settle in over the course
of the year. But it's just really hard to trust
that they're gonna be able to find the pitching to
turn this thing around.
Speaker 3 (30:41):
Jackson job, I mean, at some point you would like
to see what he can be. But it's but also
I look at it this way though, when, for example,
Eerie at this point just the amount of Joe Miller's
been pitching better as of late, but ninety one, ninety two,
ninety three tops the velosity, kys, it's here and there,
But it's Miller has shown something I mean, which is good.
Speaker 1 (31:05):
Miller has good command, or at least he did, but
he's he's just been gone too long. You know, we
just don't know what we're gonna go.
Speaker 3 (31:11):
No, let's talk Joe Miller.
Speaker 1 (31:13):
Jo Joe Miller. Sorry, I'm my boy, Jake.
Speaker 3 (31:16):
Joe Miller has been pitching very well for Eerie. He's
been the almost consistent only arm.
Speaker 1 (31:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (31:22):
Again, as you said earlier, Jake Miller is somewhere in
the injury ether of we haven't seen him pitch in
the backfield and know nothing. But as far as West
Michigan goes and Lakelin looked, I think the future is there.
What I mean by d is like you know, Ali Tanner,
there's a couple of arms there.
Speaker 1 (31:40):
It's just television, Salado Malachai, Yeah, Cobo down and Rookie ball.
Speaker 3 (31:46):
Yeah, it's all below double A. There's nobody. I mean
even in West Michigan. Is West Michigan stretch Chris? Is
that fair to say arms?
Speaker 2 (31:55):
Well, I mean, I mean Jacobs is there, Ellis Salt
is there.
Speaker 1 (32:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (32:03):
I mean we can talk about Castille a little bit
when we get to the West Michigan page. Because I
saw him. It was the best he's looked all year,
probably since he's been to West Michigan. Yeah, it's yeah,
I don't know. I mean, going all the way back
to the Lee over Anderson thing that it fundamentally it
comes down to the fact that Lee is on the
forty man roster and Anderson isn't. It's just easier. They're
not there's not enough difference there between those two for
(32:26):
them to make room on the forty man. We will
see Anderson this year, I guarantee it, because there will
be a point where they're like, Okay, let's give these
guys auditions, and hell, who knows, maybe he'll be playing
third base and maybe Colt Keith will be in Toledo
the way things are going, right, Like, it pains me
to say that we love cold Keith, but I don't
(32:47):
know how much longer you can go without hitting home
runs as a corner infielder. It's it's kind of ridiculous now.
And yeah, and I think we'll see Valencia at some point.
We'll see, like if things keep going the way they're
going and if they managed to blow this game it is,
I mean, we'll see a point where it's like, you
know what, maybe they even look to trade Torkolsen at
(33:08):
the deadline and and bring up Valencia and see if
he's their first baseman for a little bit. And then
hopefully Brescegno comes back this and starts looking like the
guy they hope he can be. But yeah, it's it's
a weird. It's a weird period in the in the
system right now. And part of this is, like, like
Brandon was saying, the pitching. You know, they took all
these pitchers and half of them died. And by that,
(33:31):
I mean, you know they're there, most of them are alive.
I think they're all alive, but you know.
Speaker 1 (33:35):
We don't really know for sure though, because there's no
information Tiger's thanks.
Speaker 2 (33:38):
So few innings from from all these guys that have
taken in the last three years. It's it's kind of absurd.
Speaker 1 (33:43):
Yeah, yeah, I mean, Owen hall Is is really the
only one of their big ticket items who is pitching
at all, and he's still in rookie ball and just
kind of like feeling his way through. You know, it
doesn't it doesn't really feel like he's got it dialed in.
And you know, I haven't got any fastball readings. I
don't know if you guys have, but it still seemed
like he was more like just from the look like
more like ninety two ninety three, maybe maybe a little
(34:04):
higher top, but so that I mean, yeah, that's just
not there. And so there's this dead period in the
system for pitching all the way down to West Michigan
and even West Michigan is like, there's there's a handful
of guys who could turn out to be pretty good
or at least useful in some capacity. Ben Jacobs might
be really good maybe, but you know, I mean you
(34:25):
look at what the White Cat's bullpen did this month.
I mean that that tells the story right there. I
mean they got walked off like I don't know, six
times or something like that. They blew a lead in
twenty two of twenty six games, something like this. I
don't know, my numbers aren't exact, but that's basically the
gist of it.
Speaker 3 (34:42):
Look, there's so.
Speaker 1 (34:43):
Many of that.
Speaker 3 (34:43):
Johnson said, if we get rid of Harris Won winning
in a five seven years, I feel like and that's
that's an accurate satement. Look for all the things that
we can that people could say about hers, about the pitching,
not be complacent everything the hitting. There's some hitting elements
that have gotten better. I mean, I know, Cole Keith,
somebody's gonna yell at me for this, but yeah, Cole
keep is all arms right now, and I'm not sure
(35:05):
what's going on with him. It's been a struggle because
we know that he's capable of better and he has
the metrics. Some of the metrics are better. But as
like I said, it's just a matter of there's a
couple of things like, for example, zat McDonald's been showing
some things that stricts not too much. There's a couple
of things you can go and say, okay, hitting and
all that. For example, even uh, Rice Rainer after struggles
(35:28):
has there's some of the development processes that are getting better.
Speaker 1 (35:32):
Yeah, they've really rapidly cleaned up Bryce Rainer swing from
from what we saw to start out. So it does
feel like that's where they know more what they're they're doing.
At this point, it's hard to know if they know
what they're doing pitching wise, because like we said, everybody's hurt.
I don't I don't know how much you exactly can
blame them for that. I mean, I've kind of kind
(35:52):
of joked a lot about the fact that they've spent like,
you know, tens of millions of dollars to like keep
keep these guys healthy and uh and it's all come
to nothing thing. But you know, it's kind of even
hard to judge them there. And for the person who said,
you know, it could be five to seven years again
if they hire a new GM. Why, you know, hire
someone who's not Scott Harrison, isn't just looking like five
years down the road and doesn't see what's right in
(36:12):
front of his face. They they have the makings of
a team right now, even with just Framber Job, Melton, Olson,
Kider Montero. You know, next year, if you can get
yourself good pitching for tark Schoogle, Casey Miz, maybe trade
Carpenter if he gets hot, you could turn this around.
A good GM could turn this around pretty quickly and
(36:33):
feel the competitive team again next year. But you have
to actually want to do that and not like, oh,
you know, my long term plan is five years and
I'm not going to commit anything and I'm going to
keep all my prospects and you know, I'm thinking twenty
thirty like that. That's where Scott Harris has been all
four years that he's been, you know, the president of
Baseball Operations, where he's just like, I'll do enough to
like try to give them a chance, but we're not
(36:55):
going to actually, you know, look at this as like
we're trying to build, you know, a little dynasty here
or anything like that. You know, that's that's for way
down the road. But of course, you know, even if
everything goes great, you know, we all like Max Clark.
I think Max Clark is gonna be reasonably good player,
like probably above average at least, you know, you got him. Brusanio,
maybe the Ronzo, maybe Rainer. But that's a long time
(37:18):
down the road. And if you can't turn the team
that they had in twenty twenty four, twenty twenty three
into a content into a better contender and a more
complete team, why am I going to wait four or
five years till you get all your guys here and
then hope that maybe you'll have figured it out by
then and can add all the complimentary pieces and build
a pitching staff in a bullpen. If you couldn't do
it now, I'm not going to give you five more
years to trust you and try to do it again.
Speaker 3 (37:40):
The reason why I think that there's some merit to
that is because what happens with the Tigers seems like
there's every excuse in the world to do another five
or seven years, and they don't have that luxury. So
I agree, I don't think it should take that long
before a reason. The way that things have been running
around here, it just seems like there's an a matter
if it's the Tigers, Lions, Wings, pistons, this is.
Speaker 1 (38:04):
Where we are.
Speaker 3 (38:05):
Yeah, so that's where we're at with that stuff. But
as far as like but salty pork chops, he says,
go ahead. The Dodger's president and player of development, Sin
is their masters at it. They also have much They
have a lot of money they can spend and have
the resources to do it, and so as Tigers have
a top ten payroll. But it's just a matter of
the guy who's controlling it right now at this point.
Speaker 1 (38:25):
So, and I mean, I think we can give Chris
Illig at least the credit that he's invested heavily in
the farm system as well. They they bought all the
bells and whistles, they did all that stuff.
Speaker 2 (38:35):
They modern added staff.
Speaker 1 (38:36):
Yeah, they've added staff to each level, you know, I
mean they have. They have had all that they wanted
down there, everything that they asked for. It seems like
they've probably gotten it, just for a whole variety of reasons.
Is not working out on the pitching side, especially right now.
Speaker 2 (38:53):
Yeah, and of course the head of player development is
Will Rhymes.
Speaker 1 (38:56):
Right right, who might not want to come back here.
Speaker 3 (39:01):
I don't think. I don't think he I don't think
he enjoyed his time here. I really don't know.
Speaker 1 (39:04):
I think I think Bill Ryan's like took everything he
saw in the Tigers development systems, such as it even was,
and went like, all right, these guys are all more ends.
I've got to figure this out myself and became, you know,
and and taught himself to do it. But and look,
I know Scott Harris is almost certainly not getting fired.
You know, neither is a J. Hinch. I can't imagine like,
not for one month of you know, atrocious baseball, because
(39:26):
it's not gonna for so it's just not that kind
of owner, Like he's not Captain proactive, who's just gonna
be like Nope, this isn't good enough for me. You know,
He's not George Steinbrenner. So you know, I mean, I
can yell and scream all I want to, and I
probably will, but you know, they're they're gonna have to
figure it out. And if Scott Harris needs someone to
help him to make trades, to make deals, someone to
(39:47):
like be a system in those regards or in or
in pro scouting where they haven't done particularly well, you know,
I mean, Kent Maida, Alex Cobb. We can go down
the list, Shelby Miller, Tommy Cainley, Kyle Finn again, Kenley Janssen,
Don Brevia. I can keep going. But you know, if
you're gonna still be there, like, recognize that you've failed
(40:09):
in this regard and do something about it. And if
you need to get helped to get better at it,
do that or.
Speaker 3 (40:15):
So yeah, yeah, swallow your probably a little bit too.
Speaker 1 (40:17):
Yes, wallow your pride and like get some outside help
and they're good at us.
Speaker 3 (40:21):
Or you know, here's another thing too, When a fellow
GM offers you a trade that you're like, you know what,
that will help us? Don't keep asking. Then he's gonna
give you less allegedly. I mean, that's that doesn't help either.
And so we're gonna deal with the next month is
a bunch of trade rumors and what have you. And
so that's just gonna be part of the course.
Speaker 1 (40:42):
And nothing's gonna happen. Like that's the thing, Like everybody
wants a decision right now and something to happen right now.
But they can't trade Google right now. They can't trade
mise right now, obviously, And so we're all just gonna
sit here and we're gonna watch what happens over the
next two or three weeks, and no decisions are gonna
get made. And you know, I don't know if anything
that can have and in the next three weeks is
really going to change any equation anyway. But nothing's gonna
(41:03):
happen for a bit. Like they're gonna just let this
play out almost for certain, until the All Star break.
So we've got six weeks to you know, see if
they can remove their head from their rear ends and
aj Hinchkins, I don't know, slap some faces. Maybe Kerry
Carpenter coming back. Everybody was all happy. They had a
little had a little gathering, little little sermon on Sunday
(41:25):
fired them up. I don't know, but I do know
that every really bad bat that you get out of
this lineup, this this lineup gets like, you know, ten
percent better. So adding Kerry Carpenter, adding Glaber Torre, subtracting
a couple other guys, they're probably gonna play better. I
won't be surprised to see the Tigers play roughly five
hundred ball for the next six to eight weeks and
(41:46):
that would be just fine. It wouldn't get them out
of the basement much, so we'll still be in the
draft lottery, but we also won't have to watch abject
misery every night. There'll be a watchable baseball team again. Yeah,
come on, Will Best, we need this win king Yeah one,
Ryan Delaide at the plate. Yeah, friends in friend of
(42:06):
the Friend of the pod. So you see this movie
a bunch in the last couple of weeks. This is
they're going to get to two outs, so that that's
going to be home run. Not to be pessimistic, I
hope that we'll Wills does get the job done.
Speaker 2 (42:17):
But yeah, yeah, this is.
Speaker 1 (42:24):
So.
Speaker 2 (42:24):
I saw somebody on Twitter talking about Scott Harris's reign
of terror. Then I thought, maybe maybe that was a
bit much when you wouldn't make the playoffs, treak the
playoffs twice, and you've made arguably the best Tigers draft
pick in the last twenty twenty five years. So it's
probably since blind it was number two, but like since Granderson, right,
Granderson was the second or third rounder, like that ended
(42:46):
up being a great pick. Yeah, but yeah, I mean,
like he's not without flaws for sure, Like there are
a lot of issues. If people complain about him kind
of disappearing right now, I don't know what he would
come out and say than like, hey, this is we
don't like this, this is unacceptable.
Speaker 1 (43:03):
We're so yeah, we're sorry to the fans. We hate
this too. We're doing everything we can to like get
back on track.
Speaker 2 (43:09):
And then but you know, then you you got to
you gotta think about how the players react to that,
like you know, it's just h yeah, but yeah, Like
the lack of pitching is remarkable. That was supposed to
be Scott Harris's thing, Like that was supposed to be
his specialty was, you know, figure out and you know,
to be honest, like, there's nothing wrong with what the
(43:29):
Tigers have been doing with starting pitching. Right Like we
we talked about how much better Montero has been this year.
They've turned Madden into like a usable pitcher, which I
didn't think was gonna happen. You know, they they keep
trying with Flaherty. I just don't know if there's any
permanently fixing that. Guy. Valdez has been as good as
we hoped, but he's had like he's basically had like
three blow ups and other than that, he's been himself.
Speaker 1 (43:51):
These are all still ABELA guys, including Troy Milton, but
at least you know, But that's why I don't I
don't have I don't think the problem here is Chris Fetter, Like,
you know, like they had to they had to push
Jackson job from Double A straight to the major leagues
to get better. And and that's where he really started
to like change his pitch mix, listen to listen to
his coaches, you know, make make some positive adjustments. So
(44:12):
I still think those guys are good. The thing about
the scottah.
Speaker 3 (44:18):
The Teker's one, the techer's one. Pray sorry, thirty what
is that?
Speaker 1 (44:23):
Thirty nine pitches from Will vest That's a gutsy effort.
I love Mason will Vess. I hope they he can
get like fully healthy and beyond this and be back
to being will Best because he's a lot of fun.
But you know, I mean, if i'm if I'm going
to counter the Scott Harris argument that hey, I've been
you know, I'm We made the playoffs twice, we won
the wild card round. I drafted you Kevin McGonagall, Okay,
(44:45):
but he didn't really have anything to do with them
making the playoffs, Like that's the thing. It's not it
wasn't his roster, and that that would be my counter argument,
Like he added, Yeah, I mean, you know he got
he found them Tyler Holton. You know, he added Matt
Verling and Zach McKinstry, and he found Jack Fla already
for one really good year. Like I'm not saying he
did nothing, but you know, I mean we all know
that this was mostly a J. Hinch developing Alvila's players
(45:08):
into a relative playoff team.
Speaker 2 (45:11):
Would you disagree, No, But but at the same time,
it's it's when you're in charge, you get the credit
and you get the blame. Like Trajan langdon Is is
the GM of the Pistons, right and he's winning. He
won sixty games with you know, the worst GM of
all times players, right, like it just you know, so,
I mean, yeah, like I understand the frustration with Harris,
(45:32):
and yeah, there are a lot of things that have
gone wrong and you're not wrong. Like the inability to
build a bullpen is insane to me.
Speaker 1 (45:41):
The it's like watching a late period Dombrowski here, you know, like, yeah.
Speaker 2 (45:46):
You know, the talk of dominating the strike zone, and
then every reliever that you get doesn't throw strikes or
they did and suddenly they don't like how fin Again,
I don't know what the hell happened there? So yeah,
I mean like there's there's clearly processes that are broken
in this organization right now. And and I don't know.
I just think as a GM, you get one chance
(46:08):
to try to kind of overcome that. Uh, And I
don't he doesn't seem like the typer's gonna tear it
down to the studs and rebuild. So I think they're
gonna stick with a bunch of these guys that now
if it goes bad and they trade schoop bul and Myze,
I think that's kind of something wise to do. But
other than that, like, I don't think they're just gonna
be like, all right, well, let's see what we can
get for Riley Green right.
Speaker 3 (46:28):
Right still inner Look, So he said that I bet
connor or system was turning on before he hair scyt here. Nah, No,
let's no, let's there's no reveal Like during the Avilla era,
the system got better because they drafted high. That's it.
And even then, Jase Young, isn't it or for that matter.
Speaker 1 (46:47):
There's there's look, they still made some big mistakes.
Speaker 3 (46:50):
There's still many mistakes regardless during that draft. Like there's
there's a complete draft class. There's three or four draft
classes in the last ten years that the Tigers have
literally nothing from zero nothing period. Yeah right, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (47:07):
But at the same time, you know bow Briski like
in the thirty something that God for taking round Jason Foley,
undrafted free agent Daniel Norris. Yeah, you know, traded Daniel
Norris for Rees Olsen, Like those are those are really
good moves, like you know, value for value, like where
those picks were, you know, I mean he did pretty well,
(47:29):
he did pretty well on the pitching side. I got
to give him that. It just took way way too long.
And we had those first like two or three years
where the drafts were pretty bad. The one to one
picks were not very good. Even if okay, those drafts
just weren't you know, weren't the drafts that had the
obvious guy who was going to become a huge stud.
You know, I mean we can Yeah, I don't want
(47:50):
to revise history either, but I do think Albila got
better as they went along, and you know, the fact
that they were like scouting you know, Indie ball in
you know, wherever and like pulling guys out of their hat,
Wilmer Flores, you know, kind of being another one that
just didn't work out because of injuries. They did that,
and I you know, the Tigers haven't really done anything
like that stuff under Scott Harris. You know, I mean,
(48:13):
you can't expect Eric Silva or you know, Joseph Montalvo
or Tyler Owens or Chase Lee to turn into like
monster relievers. But at the same time, like you know,
you know, Alavila probably would have got one of those guys,
you know, to be a solid consistent reliever, like based
on his track record, Like they would have found somebody
(48:33):
with that. But you know, again, I know, I'm I'm
just just spitting in the wind here because yeah, they're
not going to fire and they're not going to fire
Scott Harris. I understand this, but I'm going to continue
to like make the case probably all summer that like
they should really be thinking about like either firing him
or like putting some real pressure on him to make
some changes and address some like obvious systemic issues with pitching,
(48:57):
like all the way through the system at you know,
at every turn, because the next year we're going to
be dependent on frambervel does and Alavila's arms still and
it is going to be twenty twenty seven.
Speaker 3 (49:10):
By the way, Thomas, Uh, you're talking about sam Mesen.
Speaker 4 (49:13):
That was a the Fela higher Yeah, I think yeah,
NOI Benzon yeah, or he was he was in there
with Dobrowski, but yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (49:25):
Yeah, and uh Sary Tory and and those guys. Yeah,
I like just to kind of wrap us up like
he can't. Everybody makes mistakes in the draft, right, Look,
it's it's nobody is perfect and just crush the draft
every time. And one one thing I want to point
out here at the bottom of this transactions thing, it
kind of slipped through the cracks that we missed until
Josh pointed out Andrew Dunford and Brady Shakonik were released
(49:48):
by the Tigers.
Speaker 3 (49:49):
I was going to ask about that. So, I mean
Brady barely played because he's injured half time.
Speaker 2 (49:54):
Correct, Yeah, both of them were injured a ton. They
both have signed elsewhere. I think Dunford's with the Stros
and Sirconics with the Nationals now. But if you ever hear,
you know, the argument again that the Tigers you know,
saved money on Clark and that's how they got McGonagall.
Just remember that they spent four hundred and seventy thousand
dollars on on Andrew dunferd em Brady Kakonik and got
(50:14):
eight games out of them.
Speaker 1 (50:15):
Yeah, they easily could have got at Langford and and
they still would have gotten Kevin McGonagall. Like, yeah, that.
Speaker 2 (50:21):
Bet, yeah, I mean, it's it's not a it's not
that's not a true argument. But like I said, I'm
not going to complain about getting Vin McGonagall in the draft.
I don't care who else they got, right, Like, this
is going to be great rookie years and Tigers history.
Speaker 1 (50:33):
Yeah, but we got a we got a six war
short stop here the whole and they're terrible. That's like
the most baffling thing. Like, you know, all my confidence
coming into the season was like, well, I mean they
weren't that good last year, all right, maybe you know
they were overrated during the summer. They had too many
like you know, part time players who hit way over
what the what their actual ceiling is. But hey, we're
(50:56):
adding this, you know, monster rookie. This should be good
and no, no it is not.
Speaker 2 (51:03):
Oh go ahead, Chris, I'm just you know, ultimately, like
just saying, the sports is is a bottom line business,
right and you are what your record is. Yep, that's
just what you are. So nobody goes through a season
like this unless there's a miraculous turnaround and everybody starts
hitting like they you know, they hoped. Yeah, you're not
gonna go through the season on skates. Somebody's gonna lose
(51:24):
their job, some people are gonna move on. But it
would just remains me seeing what happens.
Speaker 1 (51:30):
It's so hard to it's so hard to like say
what the effect of a hitting coaches, but you do
have to think, like if there's going to be like
the first scapegoat on the firing line is you, we
would think would be Michael Berdar because he's been here
for four years now, you know, trying to think who's
gotten better Dingler, He's nope, Riley not really Torkleson. No,
(51:57):
just kind of the same up and down, like you know,
average season and then bad season. So yeah, I mean
I could see them, I could see them sacrificing Burdar
if they have to, you know, if they have to
do that, as much as it would hurt the Michigan
mafia on the Tigers to have to do that.
Speaker 2 (52:12):
And I also think about you know, the analysts, the
unseen analysts, right, like the guys in the crunching the
numbers there and coming up with like these game plans
against pitching that it's clearly not working whatever or or
are you your players can't execute what your plan is,
so you got to try something else. But there's been
a whole lot of not trying other things. Yeah, and
it's just kind of it's like a J. Hinch is
(52:34):
going to manage the way a J. Hinch manages. That
means trying to find the little advantages with you know,
platoon hitters and things like that, and pulling pitchers too
early and just like everything else, it's all backfiring this
year and you know, it's just the way it goes.
But they didn't get a win tonight, so one night
of reprieve.
Speaker 1 (52:52):
Yeah, we can at least we can at least be
happy about that. Yeah, I mean, you know, my commenters
obviously are you know, there's and I get this like that,
you know, there's no reason not to feel this way,
But like, why don't they bunt more? Why don't they sacrifice?
Why don't they hit behind runners? You know, why don't
they try to manufacture some runs? But this just isn't
you know. I mean, you could trying the same thing
and it not working doesn't make a lot of sense.
But trying things that this roster just isn't remotely built
(53:16):
to do also isn't going to work. You know, Like
if Zach McKinstry's back and he's running better now, and okay,
if you want to butt with him, that's fine because
he might be able to butt for a hit. But
I'm still going to tell you the same thing as always,
And I'm sure aj Hinch would point to this as well, Like,
you know, bunting, bunting runners is bad baseball for the
most part. Giving giving away it out at least just
bad baseball. You might as well swing away because you're
(53:38):
just as likely to move the runner and you give
yourself a chance to hit an extra base hit or
a single or a home run or just draw a walk.
They're not going to fundamentally change how they do things.
Jami Jones is going to keep getting chances to hit
left handed pitching until Scott Harris decides to take him
off the roster or a j Hinch you know, I
(53:58):
don't know, I don't know who's in charge, but like
forces him off, like, look, this isn't working, this isn't Claire.
Speaker 2 (54:06):
Ahead, Chris Well. I have nothing against Jimi Jones, but
when you're a d H whose only job is to
hit left handed pitching and you don't do it like,
you should probably get cut. I understand you want to
get rid of, right, if you want to get rid
of somebody to bring up Max Anderson, do that, like
you know, at that point.
Speaker 3 (54:22):
I go back to what somebody said in there. Yeah,
I would try something different. And by the way, the
Sparky Anderson, uh, it was just to stick about this
from a hint standpoint, Sparky Anderson and Bill Joyce clashed
quite a bit. Joy when he was the They thought
that Sparky Anderson was the kind of shadow GM because
he was the one that always wanted to treat prospects.
Be the case here, I don't know, but let's let's
(54:44):
focus on Toledo real quick, because by the way, the
shout out to there was so two people when I
was doing my post game. There was a gentleman and
his friend that ended up talked to me afterwards, and
I forgot the gentleman's name on top of my head.
Thank you so much. Of course you took this about
it than you slacker. So the as far as like,
(55:08):
by the way, I'm just gonna say this one, I'm
you know what, I'm gonna trump the chapter for a
second so I can actually focus because people are ripping
on Cold Keith wasn't right. Hey, Cold Keith hurts. He's
showing better numbers. He cannot hits right now. I think
he's hurts fielding wise. He had a bad game today,
but overall he's been feeling better.
Speaker 1 (55:24):
And he stole a base.
Speaker 3 (55:26):
He sold a base, not hurt on the lower half,
not lower Yeah, I don't know what's going on with him,
but he's all arms right now. He hasn't a head
home run. Yes I know this, we all know this,
but good god, man, Like who else is going to
replace Cold Keith? Then I'll just leave at that.
Speaker 1 (55:40):
Sorry, Just anyway, I know we're we're in play the
kids mode and he just stole one of the kids,
So don't even worry about it. Like you know, you
might just have to put up with some bad baseball
to see if they can like work these guys out
now that it doesn't matter so much, you know, like
signed Casey's long term. Yeah, maybe you shouldn't fought him
over that twin five thousand dollars to.
Speaker 3 (56:01):
You don't think you'll think like somebody mentioned that. I
think it was Noah or somebody met that was Mitch. No,
maybe it was Noah that was mentioning that it's going
to come back and haunt him. I think it will.
Speaker 1 (56:11):
I mean it was you know, I mean, I don't
feel bad for Casey mas He's made plenty of money
and not done that much, but it's like, yeah, I
mean if you're if you're trying to chisel your player
for twenty five thousand dollars, you're not doing what you
needed to, you know, like it's this penny wise pound foolishness.
You know, you never know when a guy might you
might want to negotiate with a guy and have him
like be on better terms with you. But whatever Casey,
(56:31):
Mike's got, you know, seven and a half million dollars
to be the first overall pick, and we've gotten like
six war out of them or something. Yeah, out of
that so far.
Speaker 3 (56:39):
Now, but get back to what I was. So another
person came like the other person that came up to
me afterwards was like, why is carl I was streaming
on my on this team? You know? And I said,
Scott Harris because they he was a Sky Harris guy
in twenty sixteen. That's the only thing I had.
Speaker 1 (56:55):
Yep. And he has the Scott Harris Rolodex and the
y as a starter for what he wasn't No, but
they couldn't he reliever.
Speaker 3 (57:04):
Yeah, And it was another thing I noticed with the
watch I was sitting in Live. Look, every Columbus pitcher
was ninety five ninety eight. The Tigers only have one
guy that was doing that. So it giveson Long was
sitting in ninety two ninety three. The entirety gives him
Long his stuff similar to Madden could play up here
in sense of like missing bats, but the velos he
is a concern Go same thing. Go has pitched. He's
(57:27):
come down to the earth a little bit. But again
the velocity, you just need a little bit more in
order to hit to the next level, and they just
don't have that. Valencia has fallen back to Earth. But
watching Clark and Anderson both strike out three times in
one game live, that was I don't know. That was
to me the most shocking part of the night. And
the same night was at West Michigan where he saw
(57:49):
a different type of collapse.
Speaker 2 (57:51):
It was the thing of beauty. Yeah. No, I I
just say we might see Sawyer Gibson long tomorrow given
what happened with the bullpen today. Yeah, I don't know
who they have to pitch tomorrow, right, Like you've got
Anderson and possibly to Jesus and so you know, MAYBEO
(58:11):
they'll send Madden down and bring it gives along up.
Speaker 1 (58:14):
Yeah, you might be right, because there really isn't anything
else that they can do without a forty man move.
Venasco can't come.
Speaker 2 (58:21):
Back, so not unless yeah, not unless somebody's hurt.
Speaker 1 (58:24):
Yeah yeah, so yeah they are. Yeah, they are kind
of kind of stuck there. I mean. The one good
thing about Max Clark right now, like we're all still
waiting for the power to show up. We know there
were some little flashes this this past week, pulled some
balls hard in the air, but he's still like handling
left handers, And that's the one thing that's making me
feel better. Like he's not crushing left handers, but he's
got like, what like a seven to seventy ops I
(58:44):
think against left handed pitching, that's a positive sign. So
I'm still feeling like pretty good about old Max Clark
and just just giving him his time to kind of
settle in and see as much of that better pitching
as he needs until he's ready. But we'll see him
some time this year. But he's been you know, he's
been fine for a twenty one year old at Triple A's.
(59:05):
He's holding his own just fine. There's still defensive work
to do and you know, the works. But I still
feel the same as I did preseason about Max Clark.
Speaker 2 (59:15):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (59:16):
Maybe that's not good, I don't know, but it's not
bad either.
Speaker 3 (59:20):
Yeah, he's still has some work to do. I mean,
he was getting He was a lot more aggressive Saturday
than I've seen him in a long time. So I'll
give him that.
Speaker 1 (59:29):
And because he's Max Cluck, we know he knows what
he needs to do. Like you know, you guys have
talked to him. He's a smart player. He's not shying
away from the things he's doing wrong.
Speaker 3 (59:36):
So Yeah, as far as what he who needs to
begin needs to be done. By the way, speaking of
which Toronzo had a great May kind of cooled down
a little bit, Chris, As far as what I've seen
down with Loronso sorts of a catching wise and everything,
he seems like he's gotten better. He's not missing as
many balls, so like he's he's framing better. But that's
(01:00:00):
what like, I've been watching you a little bit more.
But what have you noticed with him so far us
since come back?
Speaker 2 (01:00:06):
Yeah, I mean it seems like he's found a swing again,
which is good. The strikeouts coming in waves at times.
I think that last week before that it was like
five walks in one strikeout. It would be great if
he could be Murakami as a catcher. I don't think
he's ever going to walk quite like that. I think
there's way touch swinging miss in the zone. But if
he's just your second catcher and is capable of catching
(01:00:30):
and can hit from both sides of the plate and
could get hit your bomb, that's still a potential useful
player for sure, And there's still the upside. Right He's
he's also i think twenty three, right, maybe is he
even twenty two. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:00:44):
I think he might even be twenty two.
Speaker 2 (01:00:45):
Yeah, yeah, he turns twenty three in July, so yeah, okay, Yeah,
it's you know, there's still he's never gonna have great hands.
There's still too many like whoops, little things fall office hand.
But the arm is is a real weapon, and he's
gotten significantly more. You know, people seen that he looks
(01:01:06):
like Winsel Perez now in terms of like his size,
he's so much skinnier and more athletic.
Speaker 1 (01:01:11):
Yeah, so or agile, moving better behind the plate. Still
not like a great blocker either, but he has gotten
better at it.
Speaker 2 (01:01:19):
And anytime somebody loses weight like that, I don't know,
it tells you that, like, hey, they's serious about this
and you know they're going to try to get better,
which is good because we know last year was kind
of a last year and on and off the field.
So I don't know, I'm still encouraged by him. You'd
hope that he can have like a couple monster months
and maybe move up Toledo at the end of the year.
But I think he's still pretty much on track. The
only thing is he's already in the forty man, so
(01:01:40):
who knows.
Speaker 1 (01:01:41):
Yeah, that's the problem, is that that crunch, and that's why, Yeah,
I mean the Tigers themselves might have had to consider
trading him, you know, if we had needed something at
the deadline and we're in it, because he just is
going to run out of time. I mean, Dylan Dingler
had till he was twenty six to become a really
good catcher and figure out how to hit. Loronzo kind
of has to figure it out by the time he's
twenty four or at the at the latest. And if
(01:02:03):
he could get to be even an average defensive catcher,
then then you kind of had like, you know, maybe
maybe a borderline top one hundred guy again, because I
mean that that catching value is is pretty important. The
other nice thing about him, too, I think, is that
he's been hitting for power from both sides of the plate.
You know, as a right handed hitter, he's actually like
been smashing the baseball quite a bit. We're used to him,
(01:02:25):
you know, kind of swinging and missing a ton and
hitting some nukes swinging left handed, and he's still kind
of that way. But yeah, I mean it looks pretty
viable from both sides. Just just yeah, sort of like
you know, low tier Alexavilla, maybe more more than Murakami.
So that's I just keep thinking, like, just give me
like Alexavilla without quite as good defense, and I would
(01:02:46):
be so thrilled with that. But that's that's that's probably
as good as it could possibly get, and it's probably
not gonna get that good.
Speaker 2 (01:02:52):
Yeah, I mean I was like I was the other day.
I was like, maybe he should just be a full
time right handed I mean, obviously that takes away a
lot of the value, but I'm just looking. So he's
he's got five home runs and thirty five at bats
against right handed pitching, six eighty six lugging there, so yeah,
he's he's his eyes light up when he sees a lefty,
but that probably wouldn't work the same but against writings.
(01:03:15):
But yeah, I don't know. I've been relatively pleased with
Toronto this year, so that's a nice story there.
Speaker 3 (01:03:22):
Yeah, as far as Kellahan goes, and other numbers don't
exactly appeal, but still the number, I like those five
walks of five strikeouts. I mean, that's that's a guy
who's still trying to along with Pacheco, though I think
Pachecko I'll admit it has shown better progress than I
thought he was going to. He's suggesting better to double
A at the end of May already kind of figuring
(01:03:44):
things out a little bit. You want to seem walk
a little bit more. But nevertheless, Pacheco, for his age,
is starting to I think he's shown some glimpses of
what he could be. So at least he's he's handling
double A better than early on. But as far as
the restling goes for.
Speaker 1 (01:03:59):
It, it seemed like Pacheco might get there and just
get absolutely like just mauled, you know, like chance. Yeah,
it doesn't have been that bad. He's still striking out
of time, but yeah, but he's not.
Speaker 3 (01:04:09):
It doesn't look as overmatched as I thought it was
gonna happen. And so so let's move on to West Michigan.
Who's off, I mean, they're thanks, So who's d G and.
Speaker 2 (01:04:20):
G, Dan, Danhasty and Jesse goldbergs wrestler. Of course, Jesse's
always great time to talk, fun to talk to a
great guy. Him and Adam and Dan had me on
for two innings, the third and the fourth nice like
they were super fast. It was like I got up
there and it was like boom boom boom out. I'm like,
what's going on? But yeah, it was thanks to Dan
(01:04:40):
for for having me on. It's always fun to go
on the air and pretend like you know what you're doing.
But he didn't. He didn't mention that the Bryce Rayner
told him that he basically did not swing a bat
for eight months. So, yeah, the the idea of his
swing being a little bit wonky. I think that makes sense, right.
I think even for all of us we've been walking
all our lives, if we didn't get it, he has
to walk for eight months, we might look a little
(01:05:02):
different when we do start walking in So.
Speaker 1 (01:05:04):
I mean, you should see me walk in the morning
when I get out of bed. Yeah, a few seconds
of like the feet or numb for a second.
Speaker 3 (01:05:11):
Yeah, you're like at gazelle. You're like a gazelle, like
just like.
Speaker 1 (01:05:14):
Unsheady baby Coult.
Speaker 2 (01:05:16):
Yeah yeah, but yeah that it was a fun game.
The white Caps got out to a big lead. I
got to see Rainer absolutely murder a ball, but and
he was pimping it because it should have been a
home run. It was one hundred and thirteen miles an
hour off the bat and fourty and thirty feet. But
see like he hit it to the farthest point at
the very top of the wall and it didn't matter.
You know that the guy on first didn't score anyway,
(01:05:38):
so he couldn't go further than second. But yeah, that
was nice to see. And yeah, and like said Rainer,
Castillo was the best he's looked. He touched ninety six
a couple of times. Fastball was still like ninety two,
ninety four, had some good sliders, got to strike it
was it was really impressive sort of what we've hoped there.
But you know, any progrem there is nice to see.
(01:06:02):
And what he had, like you.
Speaker 1 (01:06:03):
Just need to see the progress, like you know, continue obviously,
you know, and like start to string it together where
it looks that good multiple times in a row.
Speaker 2 (01:06:11):
Yeah, yeah, and yeah, the hating was coming back. He
hit the ball hard. And then the most interesting thing
is just the way the difference in process between the
A system and the Tiger system. Castillo threw sixty seven
pitches and four innings and the yanked him. He was done.
The starter for the Oakland got beat up pretty early.
(01:06:34):
I think he have up six runs or five runs
in the first two innings he was struggling, couldn't throw strikes,
and they kept him in. They left him until the
seventh inning. He really he settled down and got through
six in like, you know, eighty five pitches. But they
were like, yeah, let's have these guys throw some pitches
and learn how to get out of this. Well.
Speaker 1 (01:06:52):
I can't I can't remember who pitched though. Was it
was he a legit prospect or was he an older guy?
Speaker 2 (01:06:57):
I don't know. If he's a Taiwanese guy. And his
girlfriend was in town, and so they thought that he
was gonna, you know, try to really shot out. But
apparently he hates the mound and lancing. Oh doesn't like
like it, doesn't like the way it feels, and he
pitches much better on the road. But he was like
ninety one ninety two. But he did have a really
high spin breaking ball. It was like twenty nine hundred
our pm consistently. Yeah, and yeah, I mean it looks
(01:07:20):
like you know how to pitch, but yeah, not not
like a stud or anything like that.
Speaker 1 (01:07:24):
But that's interesting though, because we have we have talked
about like how careful the Tigers are with like not
letting anyone stretch out and not letting him have a
long inning. We kind of have, you know, the anecdotal
stuff about you know, like Hinchin and Feedter not being
real happy with the way they were doing things on
the farm in terms of like not challenging certain relievers
in tough situations. Yeah, I don't know. You have to
(01:07:46):
kind of kind of wonder what's going on there pitching
development wise overall with mister Reeves being gone, and then
didn't hire anybody. Yeah, I mean it was sure.
Speaker 3 (01:07:55):
There's carry on the REVS philosophy apparently then because they hadn't,
they didn't. I thought they would hire somebody to maybe
fill the void. And that's still if you're still having
the same kind of problems, maybe change it up.
Speaker 1 (01:08:09):
But they still seem to Yeah, like they still seem
to be doing the same things, right Like it's it's
short outings, it's we don't want to extend these guys.
It is still early ish in the minor league season,
but right but about now is when you'd expect guys
to start getting extended. But yeah, I don't know, Maybe
is Shane Ferrol just kind of like doing that job himself, Like,
you know, just kind of overseeing the development.
Speaker 2 (01:08:29):
I don't know, it could be. You know, like that method.
We first saw that with the Dodgers, you know, having
these guys pitch very few innings and stuff like that,
and it came over here, and you know, the Dodgers
method is getting as many good arms as possible and
just running them into the ground, like not even running
them into the ground, just like stacking up so many
that when they inevitably get hurt, you just have more. Yeah,
(01:08:52):
you know, I don't know if that's a Tiger's plan,
but if it is, they haven't acquired any of those arms.
Speaker 1 (01:08:56):
Yeah, but they but the Dodgers also trade all those
a lot of those guys, you know, like it kind
of makes sense to to try to make them look
as good as possible on the farm if you're going
to use them as trade chips.
Speaker 2 (01:09:06):
You know.
Speaker 1 (01:09:07):
That's that's like the marketing style of picture development as
opposed to like, yeah, we're gonna we're gonna keep all
these guys and you know, try to try to turn
them into you know, like people that we intend to
use for the for the long haul. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:09:20):
So did you get a question about how his raider
looking at the defense to look.
Speaker 2 (01:09:23):
We look fine. Like I asked Dan if he's seen
him on cork a throw this year, and he said no.
He still hasn't like really just let it go, but
he hasn't really had to. Like in the game, I
saw he made a nice play, came charging in on
a weak grounder and threw it over to the first
I thought he got the runner, but they said no.
But yeah, like, uh, it looks like a viable shortstop still, right,
(01:09:45):
he's tall and he's not going to have the best
range in the world, but the arm strength makes up
for the range, and he's smooth, like he makes the
plays and he's really good at throwing on the run,
So I'm not worried about that part of his game.
It's really just get that hit hit tool fixed and uh,
sky's the limit.
Speaker 1 (01:10:01):
Yeah, and you know he doesn't have to be great
defensively right now. I mean, we've we've seen them improve McGonagall,
seen a lot of people improve. And he's still very young,
which I just keep saying all spring. He's so young,
you guys, he's just baby.
Speaker 2 (01:10:19):
Twenty one until July as well, I think.
Speaker 1 (01:10:21):
Yeah, and I think what is he probably has like
eighty games of pro ball, you know, so yeah, and
out of high school. So yeah, just gonna just kind
of like let that play out because it seems to
be going in all the right directions. Like the swing
looks better, Like they've got him upright now, they've got
his hands higher, he's not wrapping it, you know, like crazy,
he doesn't have the like reverse pivot, like you know,
(01:10:45):
high left elbow thing going on. It looks much better.
He's probably always gonna strike out a fair amount. But
if he's like Riley Green, but he's a good shortstop
with a cannon, great.
Speaker 2 (01:10:58):
Yeah, at least still excited about them. It's just yeah,
you got like and you said he's he's got seventy
six career professional games, so yeah, pro'll be fair to
give us more time.
Speaker 3 (01:11:08):
Yeah, so let's go to h continue on to go
to Lakeland. Here's Lakeland against the Cardinals system and Palm Beach.
Just the bullpen for Lakeland also had some meltowns this week.
Speaker 2 (01:11:22):
Yeah, I mean I didn't even mention that that the
Tigers blew a six to two lead, uh and gave
up a three walk off homer or not the Tigers,
the white Caps, but in the White Cap. We've talked
about the Tigers going what four and twenty one, the
white Caps went four and twenty nine in the thirty
three games. But yeah, the Bullpens have just been blowing
games left and right, and it's it's been a dozen
different culprits and it's it's very frustrating. It does feel
(01:11:44):
like there's something just leaching through the system. Yeah, but
you know in the miners and cares that much, especially in.
Speaker 1 (01:11:51):
It is funny though, when you think about how good
like West Michigan was last year and even eerie too,
like right when the Tigers were red hot and then
it kind of all tail off and it's yeah, it's
all carried over all the way down through the system.
Speaker 2 (01:12:03):
It's weird, but but shouldn't. Lakelin is still the most
fun team to watch. They just have the most interesting,
like the highest number of interesting prospects. You know. Yost
is kind of he's an interesting one because he gets
kind of overshadowed by everybody else, but he really is
kind of a lot of what we like to see.
He's he's a pretty good defender at shortstop. He made
(01:12:25):
a couple of errors in one game, but he's i
think he's only had one before that, He's got some speed,
he's got some hitting ability, showing patience. It just basically
a scouting report before the draft is true, Like he
doesn't have a whole lot of power right now, but
when you see him, you're like, Okay, this kid can
put on a lot more power just an upper body
for sure, and in the legs. So yeah, I mean
he's again, but this is like, yeah, this is a
(01:12:45):
five year plan for Jordan Yost right like a couple
years down the road, he might be your your starting
shortstop even over Rainer, but you still have to dream
on it a lot. But you're seeing that the foundation
right now is just good.
Speaker 1 (01:12:57):
Yeah, even if the power doesn't show up that much,
Like you might just have like, you know, a solid
two to three war shortstop who's just kind of a
defensive specialist who steels, bases, hits ten home runs and
that's still a good player. You know that that would
be a perfectly good get at that point in the draft.
And yeah, I mean, I do still think there's quite
a bit of upside with with that bat and the
(01:13:17):
fact that he should be a good defensive shortstop with
some speed doesn't strike out very much, you know. I mean,
that's a that's a pretty nice floor for him. So
it still seems like people are really disappointed in that pick,
and I don't really understand why. I still like the pick.
I think he's going to be pretty good.
Speaker 3 (01:13:37):
And this was a another there's got to keep conteam
to look at here the Tigers only because he was
a tenth rounder. This is where the light the late
round picks has started to kind of do something a
little bit because it hasn't been the case of four.
Is that for you to say, Chris, what.
Speaker 2 (01:13:57):
I mean, They've gotten a lot more more interesting players
in the later rounds in the last three years. Then
this was common. Like we talked before, like the Villa
era did did have some hits. I think will vest
was an eleventh rounder maybe, And we talked about Carpenter
and Preski and Brendan White and all that. But they're
kind of consistently finding these guys in rounds like seven
(01:14:18):
through fifteen that are like interesting prospects.
Speaker 1 (01:14:21):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:14:21):
That's like Brett Kellahan, I think was a thirteenth rounder.
Jim Jarvis is a big leaguer. He was an eleventh rounder.
La Salt and Warwick we're like twelfth and thirteenth round
and Espenhall. Yeah, like he's a good player. I don't
know what the ceiling is. But if he develops into
a useful catcher, I mean you've got to switch hitter
who controls the zone and possibly could be a catcher.
That's that's a yeah, that's a valuable player.
Speaker 1 (01:14:45):
Yeah, pack was the seventh rounder. I thought, yeah, I
thought he was a little lower, but yeah, but yeah,
I agree, And Espinall has had a good week and
he's a pretty pretty fun little player to watching doing
a lot of things well right now, I don't really
know how his catching is coming along, but.
Speaker 2 (01:15:00):
It's it's it's rough still, like he's a lot of
pass balls. He seems to have the arm strength and
and he has the want to write like, uh, he's
built like a catcher. He's like five seven one idea
or whatever. But yeah, I mean it's gonna take time
for for him. But again, like it's it's one of
the things where they saw it's kind of fun. We've
(01:15:20):
seen how the teams do this, right where you see
a guy who seems to have some offensive promise and
you say, you know what, what have we thrown behind
the plate and give it a try, and uh, it's
it's worth a shot because if he can stick a catcher,
then yeah, you got a good player.
Speaker 3 (01:15:33):
Mm hmm, because he was what he was telling me,
it was he was playing a lot of infield and
they just put him a catcher in the kind of
his arm, Like his arm was pretty good, and so
they like the second baseman mostly.
Speaker 1 (01:15:45):
Right, which is kind of funny for a strong armed infielder.
But yeah, yes of us had somebody really good.
Speaker 3 (01:15:53):
Yeah the cases, but uh either way, Uh, Dominican Summer
League started to I mean the FSL.
Speaker 2 (01:16:02):
I just want to just I haven't put I didn't.
I didn't make a DSL slide yet because it was
just the first game, but I'll have one for next week.
I didn't want to mention Allie Tanner real quick because
we've talked about him before. It's like his stuff seems
to have been built in a lab in terms of
just the spin rate, the iv B everything, the kill
and spin on changeups. And then he went out and
finally had it like he was dominant. Four perfect innings,
(01:16:24):
seven strikeouts. It was it was fun to watch.
Speaker 1 (01:16:27):
It was pretty pretty dang electric I averaging what like
ninety four five top in ninety six y five. Yeah,
I mean he's nineteen.
Speaker 2 (01:16:34):
Yeah, like you know, he's he's a sturdier kid. So
I don't know if there's going to be a whole
lot more there, but I don't know if he needs
a whole lot more other than just learning how to
pitch a little bit. So, I mean that's another one
that you just hope that they keep him healthy, because
that's yeah, kind of out of nowhere, right like all
these other nineteen year olds, even like Coba, like ooh, Coba,
and then Tanner's like, what about me?
Speaker 1 (01:16:55):
What about me? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:16:56):
So yeah, yeah, let's see. But again, like we've seen
everybod like Witherspoon had two good starts and now he's
had two rough ones in a row. It's like, you know,
it's it's hard to pitch.
Speaker 1 (01:17:05):
Yeah, And that's yeah, And that's what I was gonna
just close with with Lakeland. It's just that. Yeah. I mean,
you'd like to see Malxi Witherspoon move up quickly. You'd
like to see Kelvi Salsado move up quickly, but they
need to just string together a couple of good starts
where they're doing the same things well repeatedly. And yeah,
Salsado couldn't really command the breaking stuff very well, just
a little sloppy from him and and pretty much the
(01:17:25):
same from from Witherspoon. So hopefully those guys can can
kind of lock it down here a little bit and
get to West Michigan sometime by mid season. They need
to help. I'm sorry, White Cats fans, I'm sorry. Sorry
what you're gone.
Speaker 2 (01:17:37):
Through always the second half? Yeah, exactly, leagues too.
Speaker 1 (01:17:43):
We really do the way the way it's just a
tournament at the end of the year now, I mean
it does make more sense than it than it would
have ever before, that's for sure.
Speaker 3 (01:17:52):
It's just it's something especially because you know with Witherspoon
he could be also he's just trying to figure things
out sequencing, what have you, and and maybe just working
on some stuff.
Speaker 1 (01:18:02):
So yeah, yeah, he just never loses delivery.
Speaker 2 (01:18:06):
At times it's like, oh, what what happened? And like
he'll hit batters left it regularly. Oh, he's one of
those guys.
Speaker 1 (01:18:12):
I mean he's such a long armor like out the side,
like I don't know, that's I mean, I know that's
the you know, part of why there's a lot of
like relief risk, and you know that's that's what a
lot of scouts have kind of thought about him. But
that's you know, it's just hard. The further the further
you out are away from your body, the harder to
time things up are. You know, the more you can
stay compact and explode in one direction typically the easier
(01:18:36):
it is. And if you can do it smoothly, then
everyone's like, oh my god, he's got starter traits.
Speaker 2 (01:18:40):
Here we go.
Speaker 3 (01:18:43):
See, so it's squad of FCL tigers here as uh, Chris,
I know, I'm just don't look appealing.
Speaker 1 (01:18:52):
But the cavil re arrived off the injury.
Speaker 2 (01:18:55):
Yeah, and I think that somebody asked about olveto. I
would expect him to be back relative soon. If you know,
I don't know how long it takes for you to
heal from a broken toe if you're a catcher, maybe
a little bit longer. But he was on the sixty
day il and that that it's been sixty days, so
any day now, I would think.
Speaker 1 (01:19:13):
Yeah, you would think, I mean, as long as it
was a clean, simple break, yeah, you wouldn't think it
would take any longer.
Speaker 3 (01:19:19):
No, Alvedo should be back probably by the end of
the month. At some point. I'm sure there was something
I can't remember where I read that. It was something, Yeah,
it was I think Terry was saying that she hasn't
he hasn't seen him in the field yet. But yeah,
and something I don't know I thought I read somewhere
around the end of the month. But uh, yeah, there's
(01:19:41):
a couple of people coming in after watching the game,
but they're certain to Pinto is also a guy that's
been coming up quite a bit too. H but uh yeah, Carpenter,
what is the game all right? Any anything else, anything
else that stands out by f cl.
Speaker 1 (01:19:58):
Well, just that the white Caps are going to get
some like Jack Penny, Nolan McCarthy, Stephen Hurst did show up,
you know, like okay, yeah, they they need that help.
And then yeah, I'm like Coba, yeah, like incredible outing.
It's still short, but but you know, pretty good, pretty
good results.
Speaker 2 (01:20:16):
So that one was strange to me because because it
was only two innings, he did not It wasn't one
of those ones where he throws like thirty pitches in anything,
at least as far as I can tell.
Speaker 1 (01:20:24):
No, he did just look like he did.
Speaker 2 (01:20:26):
Yeah, so I mean you just crossed your fingers that
he's not hurt. Uh, Like, I'm hoping like he's pitched
I think four times, and three of them who begin
to be against the Yankees. So maybe they're just like,
all right, treat this like a bullpen and get you
started against the fellies or something like that, just to
see different bats. But yeah, hopefully we see him again.
Speaker 1 (01:20:45):
They say, you know what, we're sending this kid over
to the big you know, to the big field.
Speaker 2 (01:20:49):
Well that would be fun too. Uh. Yeah. The DSL
started today. Randy Santana is one of the more exciting
players in the system, and he made he made an
awesome diving catch. It was really hard to see. Yeah,
I assoomed in like a thousand percent. You still can't
see it. And he hit a home run in one
of the exhibitions the other day, an opposite field home
run off the Brave. So the tools are already showing
(01:21:10):
up with him. So that's fun.
Speaker 1 (01:21:11):
And he made that catch and yeah, fired at the
first two and yeah, I got the double. So he's
got a cannon, he's fast, got huge raw power potential,
pretty fun, pretty fun prospect. To watch. Yeah, Kenny, I
don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:21:24):
And then Roman Silgato was a guy that I don't think.
He was a big like particularly big signing, but pretty
awesome professional debut to hit a home run in a
double in your first game. So I want to mention him.
Speaker 1 (01:21:34):
Yeah, Oscar Toanao with a little a little bit of discipline,
although it's hard to tell him that you actually see
it because it may have been like, you know, just
stand there and take four balls. Yeah, who knows.
Speaker 2 (01:21:45):
The starter Andre's Ortiz is kind of hilarious. He's like
six foot six and like one hundred and sixty pounds.
He's so tall and lanky, and it's he's like like
ninety ninety two right now with a change up and
he's got like a you know, a low spin breaking ball.
It's it's not there, but you could picture that guy
putting on forty five pounds in throwing ninety eight one day.
(01:22:07):
It's just it's a matter of give him some time.
Did thank you?
Speaker 1 (01:22:13):
And Jonathan Rodgers he like the Tigers got him back, right, Yeah,
but he didn't pitch this week as far as I.
Speaker 2 (01:22:19):
Saw, Yeah, I don't think so, I didn't I didn't
see him in the box.
Speaker 1 (01:22:22):
Speaking of Andrew Dunford, you know, like, you know, the
same kind of group of guys. It would have been
probably better to keep Dunford, but who knows if it
matters early way, But Rogers, I don't know. I liked
Rogers initially, just two knee injuries apparently.
Speaker 2 (01:22:37):
So yeah, Alan, I kind of combined the DSL one
and DSL two here just because it was one game.
Next week, I'll make one slide for him and make
it clearer. But also, like I don't know, like the teams,
some of the teams have interesting guys, and half of
them on one team, half or the other, it doesn't
really matter that much.
Speaker 1 (01:22:56):
My mom was cussing out Brisky before he'd been through
one pitch, like I was discussing, because you know, he
clearly wasn't ready, you know, like if anybody saw him
at Toledo last week, like you know, he was still
still pretty wild, but since they called him up, it
was like you knew he was coming in there. I
was like, oh God, by.
Speaker 3 (01:23:13):
The way, I thank you, we two for the five dollars.
We appreciate it, and I'm just gonna find.
Speaker 1 (01:23:17):
The uh, you know, the way exquisite. The way Arby's
fries things holds up even worse than any other places
fried food.
Speaker 2 (01:23:28):
Yeah, they really do not last.
Speaker 1 (01:23:31):
You need to get that one that's red hot, baby, No,
you're right.
Speaker 3 (01:23:35):
Especially here's the thing about the curly fries. If you
get the curly fries at the bottom of the bag
and they're not and they're they're not warm, there's just
it's like really funky aftertaste.
Speaker 1 (01:23:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:23:48):
Yeah, you know what you're getting yourself into. It's true
delicious gray roast beef. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:23:55):
By the way, though I'm still a fan of there
for whatever reason, I love the French tip more than
any of the.
Speaker 1 (01:24:00):
Too, I have to I have to say the French
dip sandwiches is like pretty strong for like a fast
food sandwich. It's not bad at all.
Speaker 2 (01:24:08):
They have random interesting things like the jamocha shake is
like top tier, like random.
Speaker 1 (01:24:15):
Yeah, and they I shouldn't eat these, but their Mozarell
sticks are the best too, because they bread them really thickly. Yeah.
I don't want to talk about them because I shouldn't
eat that.
Speaker 3 (01:24:25):
Crept yeah either, but look, I could ask for cheese
sauce is a good idea. Oh, so you know, it's
also really good broncleberry sauce. That bronchleberry sauce for a
while is I mean, it's like justice. I mean it's
I don't get it, man. Like I've been eating less
fast food and obviously that's good. It's it's hard, but
I've been. But sometimes every once in a while, I'll
(01:24:47):
go in and just get to grab a random like
I'll ask for broncoberry sauce. Oh, you guys forgot some
of the drives are just made excuse and then I'll
just take it and use.
Speaker 1 (01:24:55):
It, save it. Yeah, that's what I do. Like I
go to Taco Bell maybe once month, and I and
I know the guy at late at night and he
will always give me like a giant pile of sauce
that I will then use and ignore Taco Bell for
quite a while. But every time I go into Taco Bell,
it's like they have like five new items that are
interesting and by the next time you're there, they're gone.
You want they have those like street tacos like Carneta Street.
Speaker 3 (01:25:18):
To the podcast all Hungry, but look you got they
you know, you got rid of the double decker. F
you for doing that because double Decker is the greatest thing.
Speaker 2 (01:25:27):
Ever for the uh yeah, when they were doing like
the eighties and nineties stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:25:33):
Yeah seven. I like what Adam said here.
Speaker 1 (01:25:38):
I know it's so true, but I feel like Taco
Bell is going into that range where like it's like
dipping tacos h but not next time you go yeah,
and then you know, it's just like when we're Arby's.
I just want Arby's if Arbie started serving like pizza
and breakfast at the same time, like you just you
just roll with it whatever. Yeah, yeah, that's right, really good.
(01:26:00):
Maybe they do just talk about breakfast again because I
used to when in the nineties I lived on like
breakfast burritos at like five morning.
Speaker 3 (01:26:07):
So jealous of you. We two said they finally have
burgers in Tennessee, and man that is I had an
Alberger in Houston years ago. It was really really good.
Speaker 2 (01:26:17):
Yeah, that's where I was. One of the places I
hit up in Houston was In and Out because I
had never been there. So yeah, it was tasty. It
was like it to me, it was like covers but
like half the price. Oh yeah, brought.
Speaker 1 (01:26:28):
Back so like rallies, is that like a cop at all.
Speaker 3 (01:26:31):
No, no, no, no rallies. It's significant upgrade than rallies.
Speaker 2 (01:26:36):
I still crush the rallies And yeah, just become the
rb'st podcast and not the Arched podcast.
Speaker 3 (01:26:43):
But well, look tigers once tonight. They people getting curly
fries tomorrow, so I'm sure they're just preparing themselves for it.
Speaker 1 (01:26:50):
Local Tigers are in a great mood.
Speaker 3 (01:26:52):
Yeah, although that you know what though, Michael, you know
Michael bringing in that's a strong contended right now. Oh yeah,
what what the King Swaine buns excellent choice. There are
other fifth fifth daan which is really good. Like it's
uh for those watch ladies. Man, We'll be in the
podcast with this note. Arby's or not Arby's. Wendy's has
(01:27:13):
gone completely downhill.
Speaker 1 (01:27:15):
I have been there, which has Wendy's.
Speaker 3 (01:27:20):
When Wendy's is not the same anymore they used to be.
They did things too much.
Speaker 1 (01:27:25):
And he said those like spicy nuggets for a little
while that were not bad, but that was the only
thing on the menu I could potentially really stomach.
Speaker 4 (01:27:32):
I made, uh, I mean like a frosty Frosty I mean,
I mean a couple of burgers last week with French
onion mix garlic.
Speaker 3 (01:27:42):
Used in ninety ten round beef mix. Oh yeah, phenomena
ash Burger. Yeah, bring back the chips that what does she?
Who is this person?
Speaker 2 (01:27:51):
What the I've never never heard of those?
Speaker 3 (01:27:54):
Oh yeah, like potato chips with Yeah, it must be
some strange Ohio craft that we've never heard. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:28:02):
I've had the the Horsey sauce injection or something.
Speaker 2 (01:28:06):
Yeah, I've had the better made chips that were you know,
covered in chocolate. Those are if you've never tried those, now,
they're pretty remarkable.
Speaker 1 (01:28:15):
I'm real picky about candy in general, and I like chocolate,
but I just like it. I like it almost by itself.
Speaker 2 (01:28:20):
For the most part.
Speaker 1 (01:28:21):
I don't like chocolate and maybe I need to live more.
It's true. So if I see them, so.
Speaker 3 (01:28:30):
Our finish up by Roller Reports, Uh, we should have
a top ranking up this week, Chris.
Speaker 2 (01:28:35):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't know if you saw today
that m Pipeline put Hazu's Pinto on their top thirty
because how you has apparently graduated. I didn't think he
was topped out in time yet, but apparently it is,
so we can put him.
Speaker 3 (01:28:49):
Yeah, well, I put him on. That's why I put
him off my list, because I feel I felt like
that by the time we were gonna be done, that
it was gonna be he was gonna be prospect out,
and so I.
Speaker 2 (01:28:57):
Thought they were you know, I thought he was gonna
get sit down eventually, and I think he will when
when Glaver comes back. But yeah, there you go. So
how you lead no longer a prospect Lorookie of the Year.
Speaker 1 (01:29:05):
Yeah, I do hope we see him again because and
I hope it it gets a little bit better at
the plate because he's a lot of fun and how
you les fired up the world? Right?
Speaker 2 (01:29:15):
Yeah, that his little batfoot today was pretty awesome. I
don't know if you caught that.
Speaker 1 (01:29:18):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then when he yeah, when he
came around and third and saw that they were calling
it a home run, he was immediately like, ah.
Speaker 3 (01:29:24):
He should be, you know, he should be. I said,
I think there's still stuff stuff left in for him
the tank and so last thirty seconds. By the way,
we know all you love white Castle sliders, all three
of you.
Speaker 1 (01:29:37):
I do. I do, like I must admit I every
once in a while whenever I will just have to
get like six of them and try to go too crazy.
But I will just crush those in like five minutes.
Speaker 3 (01:29:47):
I think he's implying because we're all heavy set. Man,
maybe well you're not at all.
Speaker 2 (01:29:52):
You know.
Speaker 1 (01:29:56):
I still have a little little bit of beer belling,
you know. You know what my thing is though, like
the thing I've been dry thing to get every once
in a while, as the Portillo's Italian beef sandwich down
on M fifty nine, because that is the jam. I
loved it when I lived in Chicago. We used to
go there from Kalamazoo to get that thing, slather it
with the hot peppers and the.
Speaker 3 (01:30:11):
Gem oh man, don't do it that much. So here's
the thing. I will not go up M. Fifty nine
because I hate fifty with a passion of a thousand sons.
That fifty nine is one of the worst roads in Michigan,
no matter what time, no matter what time of date
is like, it's worse than telegraph. And yeah, there's a
Porcellos Portello's now in oh I missing if there's one
(01:30:36):
in down here.
Speaker 2 (01:30:37):
In I think I don't know there were in Michigan.
Speaker 3 (01:30:40):
Lavognan, I'm sorry, it's a lavoyant Chris so's not too
far from you.
Speaker 1 (01:30:44):
So, uh, Stewart, I see your comment, and you're you're
speaking my fear into existence. So they're gonna that they're
gonna go on a crazy run here and not sell
and then we'll dis miss the playoffs. That is the fear.
Like that's such an awkward specific fear to have to have,
but that is, that is the fear. If they keep losing, well,
that's fine because that's where we are. And if they
somehow like win ten in a row and then like
(01:31:05):
keep going and our incontussent, oh my god, this is crazy.
The worst spot is is that middle ground where they
just you know, you don't know where you are exactly
like pick a side Tigers.
Speaker 2 (01:31:15):
Yeah, yeah, I don't know. Based on what we saw today.
As much fun as it was to watch that offense,
I don't think they can go on a run when
you can't at all.
Speaker 1 (01:31:25):
Nope, you cannot protect the lead. That's all right. JV
is gonna come back and his hips will feel good,
and then we can move Cater and Jack to the
bullpen and then Target comes back, right whatever. At some point,
I don't know. I think we're cooked with Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:31:40):
I think they're yeah, it's there, all right. Anyway, let's
wrap it up because it's it's been a long one.
It's been an hour thirty three hour thirty one, so
long as podcast we've had in a while. Thanks so
much for watching, Thanks so much listening, And if you
want to listen to three parts, well one part is
more likely food talk then and yeah, by the way,
(01:32:00):
everything else, Brandon, you go to check out everything at
busy boys dot com. What do you guys have going on?
Speaker 1 (01:32:07):
Nothing a ton at the moment, but I'm going to
write about this, the Scott Harris situation and the pitching
and the whole thing. We're also we got something coming
on Dylan Dangler possibly turning into the best catcher in baseball,
and those will be out probably the next day or two.
Speaker 3 (01:32:19):
Yeah, I did an article on the last month about
some of the exit velocity and some of the things
he's very changing, that we're going to give him more power.
And I think I said you had twenty five home
runs this year back at the beginning. It was one
of my bold predictions. And so, by the way, for
the retraction purposes, I did say Riley Green was going
(01:32:39):
to or I did take people was going to hit
a home run against the White Souce this weekend did
not happen. I thought the Tigers would beat the White
Sauce this weekend didn't happen, so too Yeah, rast speculation
is coming around the corner or Draft show will be
up to at some point as well. Keep a closs everybody,
have a good night.
Speaker 1 (01:33:03):
