Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to Season two of the Good Stuff. I'm Ashley Schick,
and I'm joined by my husband and co host, Jacob Schick,
a third generation combat marine and CEO of One Tribe Foundation.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Ashley also comes from a family rich in military history,
and we've dedicated our lives to One Tribe's mission serving veterans, first.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
Responders, and their families.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
We're coming to you from Dallas, so welcome to texts
and joining us all season long. From Los Angeles, California
is our West Coast, long haired friend and producer of
The Good Stuff, Nick Cassolini.

Speaker 4 (00:29):
Today, I tag along with Jake and Ashley for a
week's worth of Texas football.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Yes, this week we take Nick to two Texas high
school football games, a nine you game, and spend the
rest of the weekend watching college and NFL football.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Sounds like a normal week in the Shit Counsel.

Speaker 4 (00:45):
This is a very fun episode, but just as a
quick heads up. From time to time on this show,
we do explore heavy subject matter, including talks of suicide,
so as usual, listener discretion is advised.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
We're thrilled you're joining us again.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
Welcome to the Good Stuff.

Speaker 4 (01:10):
Like at this point, the game hasn't started yet. You know,
do you feel like butterflies and or something like? Are
you excited for them? Are you nervous?

Speaker 5 (01:17):
Are you like, what's the emotional temperature for you as
a parent.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
I don't have nervous energy yet. But kickoff's also not
for another twenty four minutes.

Speaker 5 (01:29):
Get all right, Jake, you want to tell us where
we currently are.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
We are at Reedy High School, in the first cod
of Texas, the Reedy Lion.

Speaker 4 (01:44):
The Reedy Lions. Baby, what are we about to get into?
Tell me what we have in store for ourselves?

Speaker 6 (01:49):
About to watch Jack's freshman football game.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
This is their third game. They're two and oh right now,
so let's hope that they walk away tonight three.

Speaker 5 (01:58):
You know, and by Jack's you're talking about your son,
your oldest Yeah, Jackson. That's amazing, man. Yeah, super proud.

Speaker 6 (02:05):
He's really worked hard, you know, he's actually come into his.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
Own with football, and I'm really proud of him.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
I mean, he's putting in all the work and doing
all the things that it takes to play this sport
and to play it well, and he's gotten a lot
more discipline.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
So I'm super proud of him.

Speaker 4 (02:20):
Just because it's worth hammering it into everyone's brains once more.
We are in Texas and this is high school football,
and you played high school football in Texas. I did,
and I think that people have a sense of what
that means. But what does that mean to you?

Speaker 6 (02:37):
Well, it saved my life, But I think generally speaking
with just Texas and Texas.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
Football, it's just a way of life for us here.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
It's just something that we do and that we love,
and we love competition and good sport, and you know,
I think this is all part of it, and it's
it's great because it teaches these kids so many life
skills and life lessons and it is legitimately a true
joy of mine to watch watch the boys compete in anything.

Speaker 5 (03:05):
So, Okay, what do you mean it saved your life?

Speaker 6 (03:07):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (03:07):
Because I was that was a hellion?

Speaker 5 (03:09):
Uh huh.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
I had.

Speaker 6 (03:11):
I didn't have a lot of structure and discipline, and
football gave me an outlet and it gave me something
to hyper focus on. And I think if I didn't
have that, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have I would
have made it through high school.

Speaker 5 (03:23):
How do you see it playing into your son's life currently?
Do you think it's playing a similar role. Is it different.
I think it's a lot different.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
I think he just has a true love, a genuine
love for the game, you know. And I loved it,
but I needed it like I allowed it to define
me and be my everything and all consuming. And and
I don't think. I don't think jack is there. I
think he just loves his sport and loves to compete for.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
Jackson's part of it.

Speaker 5 (03:51):
It's a lot.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
It's a lot healthier with him than it was than
it was with me.

Speaker 4 (03:58):
Go like this, check check check check check as good.
What's up, dude, Thanks for joining the show. Yeah, would
you like to introduce yourself to our listeners.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
I'm Jackson.

Speaker 7 (04:08):
I'm Jacob and Ashley's son.

Speaker 4 (04:17):
What's that like to have a son? He's a freshman
in high school? You know, it's obviously an important age.
There's a lot of things started having for a kid
and to be able to look back and be or
look forward and think, man, that kids, that kid's doing good.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
Uh well, it's you know, it's like high five, like
we're doing something right. Yeah, you know, we're I'd like
to think that we're leading from the front and that
we teach them right things, right reasons and leaderships and
all the time thing, not what it's gonna benient for
you thing, and that you know, if you're gonna do it,

(04:53):
do it all the way.

Speaker 4 (04:54):
Taking a look at your parents, how do you think
you're playing football impact their life?

Speaker 7 (05:02):
I think they just want me to be happy, and
I think, you know, they both love the game of
football is just as much as I do. And I'd
say it's just a fun family tradition.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
I would say, I mean, we.

Speaker 7 (05:13):
All grow as a family from football, and yeah, it's
just fun. Because Ashley likes Texas, I like LSU, So
that's definitely a fun little like not a rivalry, i'd say,
but you know, it's fun sometimes, you know when you
know they'll both be playing on Saturdays, and I mean
we root for each other, but at the end of

(05:33):
the day, we both only like one team.

Speaker 5 (05:36):
Yeah right, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
Yeah, we've definitely admitted that once or twice.

Speaker 5 (05:40):
What kind of like sports parent are you?

Speaker 8 (05:43):
Like?

Speaker 4 (05:43):
How would you describe yourself involved?

Speaker 2 (05:52):
I've told it way down and I told Jackson this
was gonna happen, which is true.

Speaker 6 (05:57):
I mean, actually gonna test to it like before.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
It's like I'm a fan, I'm a parent, I'm a coach,
like I'm trying to help.

Speaker 5 (06:05):
Well.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
Now, the the environment completely changes once they get into
high school school. Yeah, like real, like you know, they
have a lot of coaches and they have them there
for a reason, right, but yeah, I mean I get
into it.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
Let them know.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
When I saw I want to see him, you know,
pancakes somebody or see a great block that results in
a touchdown or a great run or a catch. I'm
still very involved.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
But very I'm cool.

Speaker 5 (06:34):
What do you think it means for your dad to
see you play?

Speaker 3 (06:37):
I think it's cool.

Speaker 7 (06:38):
It's so fun to like have that, like you know,
he's been on the field at one point and now
like I'm on the football field and you know, I've
played for me. But it's also cool that they support
me and what I do. I'd be playing like a
different sport like maybe baseball or basketball, and they'd be
just as into it as they are.

Speaker 3 (06:59):
For boy.

Speaker 7 (07:00):
Yeah, and I think that's really cool that day support
me and everything that I do.

Speaker 4 (07:06):
Does it feel like destiny that you were gonna be
a good father? Like was that always gonna happen? Was
that a guarantee? You think, like, was that always in
the tea leaves?

Speaker 2 (07:17):
Well, no, because I was a shitty, horrible father for
the first seven years.

Speaker 6 (07:22):
Is life, you know, the alcoholic addict.

Speaker 3 (07:25):
So no, I think it's something you have to really
work at, you know.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
I think there's a drastic difference between being a parent
and having children. For me, being a parent is an
honor and it's the joy of my life.

Speaker 6 (07:39):
And you know, I'll.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
Look at our boys and I'm just in awe of
just how much more advanced in all the ways they
are and where.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
I was at their age. Yeah, just how much quite
frankly better humans they were than me at that age.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
You have to be fair across the board. I'll also
been very honest with them about how I was and
decisions I made and the things that I did that
I'm not proud of, and that you know, I've been
very very.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
Open with them about that, and so I think.

Speaker 6 (08:13):
That that's that's played a role.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
In some decision making processes.

Speaker 5 (08:22):
Okay, Ashley, and what kind of parent are you watching
these games?

Speaker 1 (08:26):
I am every bit the annoying football mom who loves
all of the school spirit and the buttons and the
moms and the homecoming posters and the sparkly paint and
all the things. I am eating this up. I love it.
We have waited for this day. Jackson is playing Texas
High school football, which is what it's all about in

(08:49):
this state, and so I am very proud football mom.

Speaker 4 (08:54):
A couple of dumb questions we got to ask. Okay,
homecoming is coming up for you? What's your mind frame
about that? Do you care?

Speaker 5 (09:02):
Are you into it? What's your deal? Bro?

Speaker 7 (09:04):
Honestly, dude, Like, I'm just I don't really care. I mean,
I think it's kind of like, I mean, I get
its tradition, tradition, but man, they go.

Speaker 3 (09:17):
All out for that.

Speaker 7 (09:18):
It's like everywhere and it's not even it's like two
weeks I think. I mean, me and Ash just made
that sign last night that you saw. It's like, man,
it's so much God.

Speaker 4 (09:31):
And Okay, I do want to take a little divergence here.
There are some poster making supplies.

Speaker 5 (09:37):
Why is at the house? Currently? Explain what why you
about the posters and what they're for.

Speaker 1 (09:44):
Trust me, everyone that has a teenager or twenty something
knows all about it. But the promposals or the hokoposals,
Hoko is short for homecoming. That's how the kids ask
their date, their potential date for homecoming or promise. Now
they have to do a witty poster and give a
little gift.

Speaker 7 (10:05):
I'm asking a friend to hoko and you usually just
you know, you go to their their friend's house and
they come out. Then you just ask and that's pretty
much it. And that's why I think it can be
like a little silly sometimes.

Speaker 4 (10:18):
Yeah, you hold up the sign basically as a way
of asking your girl out. Yeah, got you so. But
you're going with it. You seem to have a pretty
good attitude about it.

Speaker 7 (10:27):
I mean, yeah, i'd say, yeah, Ashley's enjoying a lot,
I'd say that.

Speaker 5 (10:35):
But you know, it's fun.

Speaker 7 (10:36):
It's definitely some quality time with really everyone. Whole process.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
Jack and I begrudgingly, Jack and I are going to
be creating our witty little poster.

Speaker 5 (10:48):
To ask a girl to homecoming.

Speaker 4 (10:50):
Correct, and it has to be it's like a public
display also, that's a part of that, right.

Speaker 5 (10:54):
This poster is not something you do in solitude.

Speaker 1 (10:56):
Pictures are it didn't happen.

Speaker 4 (10:58):
In front of it, in front of everybody, the correct man.
May the Lord be with these children, that's.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
Just a different world. It's a game change. It's a
different world out there. It's dog eat dog world. Yeah,
you gotta have a poster and you better have a witty.

Speaker 4 (11:11):
Saying what are you expecting tonight? What position is Jackson at?
Is he starting?

Speaker 1 (11:21):
Like?

Speaker 5 (11:21):
Where? What's going on here? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (11:22):
Jackson's starting offense at h BAC and then he rotates
in at Mike linebacker, which is a middle linebacker on defense.

Speaker 3 (11:31):
He gets after it, Like what do I expect to see?

Speaker 2 (11:33):
I expect to see him get after it full speed
every single play. Yeah, yeah, and play as hard as
he can from the first whistle to the last whistle.

Speaker 4 (11:49):
All right, Jake, you told me not to put the
microphone in your face during the game.

Speaker 3 (11:53):
Yeah, don't talk with you.

Speaker 6 (11:54):
Why what are you going to be like, because I'm
hyper focused?

Speaker 5 (11:58):
Yeah, right, like your dial.

Speaker 3 (12:00):
I'm being a president father. Yeah, don't stick a microphone
in my face.

Speaker 5 (12:04):
I won't. I want to, I won't.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
Dependent upon how the first off goes, don't do it
to that though.

Speaker 4 (12:12):
It's time for me to leave Jake and Ashley alone
and let them watch the game. But we'll be back
after a quick word from our sponsors. Thank you for
sticking around. Let's jump back in with more football and.

Speaker 5 (12:26):
More Jackson.

Speaker 6 (12:30):
I want.

Speaker 4 (12:36):
And the Reedy Lions are victorious. I loved watching you
play football the other day.

Speaker 3 (12:46):
Yeah, it was fun.

Speaker 4 (12:48):
Go ahead, man, I kind of want to hear. How
is that game from your perspective?

Speaker 3 (12:51):
It was intense?

Speaker 5 (12:52):
For sure, go ahead.

Speaker 3 (12:54):
It was fun.

Speaker 5 (12:56):
It was a good team win.

Speaker 7 (12:58):
I think we have a solid team, just sometimes we
got to keep our cool when other teams don't.

Speaker 9 (13:06):
Yeah, talk about that a little bit. It seemed like
the other team was getting a little fisty.

Speaker 5 (13:09):
Huh, Yeah they were.

Speaker 7 (13:11):
They were definitely getting a little mad when we were running.

Speaker 5 (13:14):
Out the score.

Speaker 7 (13:15):
But we kept our cool towards the end, so it
was nice that we had some class towards the end.

Speaker 3 (13:22):
For sure.

Speaker 9 (13:23):
Did that come easy for you or did you also
want to start popping off?

Speaker 7 (13:27):
I mean, I'd say it came kind of easy because
the following weeks, you know, some of the same things
kinda happen. So it's a learning experience for sure. Just
to keep my cool to you know, not cost my
team any more penalties and needed.

Speaker 4 (13:43):
Do you have like any goals for your like, even
just as freshman year, like, where do you what are
you aiming for?

Speaker 7 (13:49):
I'm gonna try to in the year with the three
point seven gpa or higher.

Speaker 5 (13:54):
Uh huh.

Speaker 7 (13:54):
That's like my main goal, I would say, if you
like academic wise, uh huh. And then football honestly, just
keep having success and yeah, just keep working hard. I
think I'll probably be on for our city by junior year.

Speaker 5 (14:11):
Okay, that's a goal. There you go.

Speaker 4 (14:12):
Okay, another another question I feel compelled to ask because
I feel like it's on everyone's mind.

Speaker 5 (14:18):
How old are you?

Speaker 3 (14:19):
Fourteen?

Speaker 5 (14:19):
You're fourteen?

Speaker 4 (14:20):
Okay, you're in school. What's going on with AI and
you and school?

Speaker 5 (14:25):
What's what's up with that?

Speaker 7 (14:26):
I just I've never really used AI for any projects.
Me and you were joking around the other day, chatchy BT.
Yeah yeah, yeah, chat BT.

Speaker 3 (14:34):
If I have like a.

Speaker 7 (14:34):
Question, I don't really go to Google anymore.

Speaker 3 (14:37):
Yeah, Chat GPTs like my go.

Speaker 4 (14:38):
To forever, So like basically what used to be a
Google search. If you're just curious about something like a
football question or a stat or just whatever, you go
to chat GPT for the info.

Speaker 7 (14:47):
Heck yeah, yeah yeah, chatchts. That's my homie right.

Speaker 9 (14:51):
There, and that was there any part of chat GPT
that helped you come up with the phrase you would
write on your homecoming poster?

Speaker 7 (14:58):
Yeah, it actually did. I asked you to bet everything.
I was like, all right, here's the deal, here's the name,
here's some ideas, and it just gave me a breakdown. Honestly,
I was doing it as a joke from the start. Yeah,
but then I saw a good one and I was like, gosh,
let's just use this one.

Speaker 3 (15:17):
She was like, heck yeah.

Speaker 5 (15:25):
And what's it like to watch your little brother play man?

Speaker 7 (15:28):
It's definitely a learning experience, for sure, for you, for everyone,
because you know, sometimes like he's new and you gotta
like stay patient. And I remember being his age, and
I'm doing maybe the same as him, or maybe even worse,
you know, but it's definitely a growing experience for him us.
You know, he's doing great, he's adjusting to it.

Speaker 5 (15:50):
And what is your name, Jamison? How are you doing today?

Speaker 8 (15:58):
I'm feeling pretty good.

Speaker 5 (15:59):
Yeah. What have you been up to?

Speaker 8 (16:02):
Just chilling on a Sunday weekend? Uh?

Speaker 5 (16:05):
Huh, that's cool. Will you put the microphone a little
closer to your face?

Speaker 4 (16:08):
Yeah, that's perfect? Okay, cool, cool, cool, I really appreciate
you being on the show. Are you feeling good about
being here?

Speaker 8 (16:14):
Oh yeah, yeah, first time experience feels pretty good.

Speaker 5 (16:20):
Okay, Ashley, tell us where we are and what is
going on.

Speaker 1 (16:23):
We are at Bacchus Harold Bacchus Community Park in Frisco, Texas.
We've got our Frisco Football League FFL ninth nine year
old football game going on. It's the Cowboys versus the
Chiefs today. It's a highly contested uh yeah, his story
storied game. So it's really exciting. The boys are playing hard.

(16:47):
It's a defensive game.

Speaker 5 (16:49):
So far.

Speaker 1 (16:49):
It's score zero zero.

Speaker 5 (16:51):
So that's a completion. Oh all right, now those kills
for the right that's a Cowboys first down. What's your
favorite part about football?

Speaker 10 (17:06):
Oh?

Speaker 8 (17:07):
My favorite part about football is probably when I'm on
defense on the D line.

Speaker 5 (17:12):
Uh huh, Yeah, that's good. That's that is fun.

Speaker 3 (17:15):
Huh yeah.

Speaker 5 (17:17):
Do you like the camaraderie with your teammates?

Speaker 4 (17:19):
Do you like the the like hitting people, like the
physical part of it?

Speaker 8 (17:24):
I like the hitting people, the physical part of it. Yeah,
hitting people is very fun.

Speaker 5 (17:29):
Yeah. Do you like getting hit?

Speaker 8 (17:33):
Oh? Not really.

Speaker 5 (17:36):
Do you have a favorite player or favorite.

Speaker 8 (17:38):
Team, my favorite team in college Hookham Horns, Texas nice NFL.
It's not the Cowboys. I'm sorry.

Speaker 5 (17:52):
Oh why.

Speaker 8 (17:54):
They just kind of they they're not that good.

Speaker 5 (17:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (18:00):
Right now it is halftime, and we've got a halftime
show breakdown.

Speaker 5 (18:03):
What are we about to? What's going on here with
this halftime?

Speaker 1 (18:05):
So the Cowboys cheerleaders are about to perform. I'm not
sure if they're going to do a cheer or do
a dance, but the Chiefs cheerleaders just did three cheers
and it was super cute. And you know, we start
them young here in Texas.

Speaker 4 (18:19):
So these girls are the same age as the boys. Correct,
And do you remember cheerleading at this age?

Speaker 5 (18:23):
I do? What was it like so much fun? Yeah?
I mean it looks like they're having a great.

Speaker 11 (18:28):
Time seed, Yeah for sure.

Speaker 1 (18:29):
I mean for me, it was always I like to
cheer so that I could have an excuse to go
to the games.

Speaker 5 (18:33):
Okay, I was going to ask, because it's always.

Speaker 1 (18:35):
It's always been football for me. Like the cheerleading that
they do now is so it's so much the game, right, Yeah,
it's so much more competitive now than it was back then. See,
here's our Cowboys cheerleaders walking out onto the fields.

Speaker 5 (18:53):
Yes, this is.

Speaker 3 (18:56):
Cowboys cheerleaders.

Speaker 11 (18:58):
Yes, sir, here we go.

Speaker 1 (19:03):
He's got a nice spirit circle going, and they are
about to do a dance.

Speaker 4 (19:08):
And how do you think your parents feel about you
playing football?

Speaker 8 (19:13):
My dad, he just wants me to do what I want.
And I think he loves that I I think he
likes that I play football. I love football, like I'm
really passionate about it. And I feel like he's proud
of me. Every game, even if I make mistakes, he
teaches me, and I feel like he's just proud of me.

(19:35):
And he's a great dad.

Speaker 5 (19:36):
Yeah. Is he a good teacher.

Speaker 8 (19:38):
Yeah, yeah, he's a really good teacher.

Speaker 5 (19:40):
Uh huh. Why how do you describe a good teacher.

Speaker 8 (19:43):
He just he's not skipping any parts, Like it's start
to finish, He is not skipping any parts. It's he
can He's just a ma He takes his time telling you.
It's not like thirty seconds, sorry, you can go now.

(20:05):
It's like at least when it's like a serious conversation,
it's at least like an hour. Wow. Like and that's
just like if I do like five mistakes in football,
Uh huh. And he's just really he's just a great dad.
So yeah, yeah, the best one I could ever ask for.

Speaker 5 (20:24):
That's sweet.

Speaker 8 (20:25):
Like, I think football is fun, like really fun, huh.
And I just had since this is my first year,
I have to keep learning and yeah, I just got
to keep learning and we I just have to keep
working hard, practice and all that. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (20:42):
Yeah, cool man, Do you have any questions for me?

Speaker 8 (20:48):
I'll get to that.

Speaker 5 (20:49):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (20:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (20:50):
My mom sometimes she like gets really worried about me
playing football. She's a mom, so yeah, Actually, I feel
like she's also really proud of me playing. She's just
playing like she's proud of me and and I played

(21:11):
football and all that. I just think she's really proud
of me all the time. And she's the one who
taught me how to time I shoes and taught me
how to go poop and be like in the toilet.

Speaker 5 (21:26):
Yeah that's valuable lessons man. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (21:30):
So actually, one thing that I did kind of want
to talk to you about is you are Jack and
Jamo's step mom, and I'm just curious. I don't think
you and I have ever really spoken about your journey
as a step parent. I'm just kind of curious to
hear what it was like in the beginning, what it's
like now, and what that evolution has been.

Speaker 5 (21:47):
Like for you.

Speaker 1 (21:48):
Absolutely, it's truly one of the greatest joys and honors
of my life. We call it bonus mom. First of all,
I have two amazing steps ons. Like they are both
two of the most intelligent, hilarious, like to the point
that when I'm supposed to be disciplining them, I can't
because Jackson's so freaking funny that like, I just I
lose it. I'm laughing, And Jake's like really really babe,

(22:10):
Like he's hilarious, and Jamison is two they're both so quirky,
they're both so intelligent, and they're both so kind hearted.
So I'm truly blessed. But yeah, I mean, I also
had the advantage of knowing both of them before Jake
and I got together, because he and I were friends
for five years before we started dating, and so having
known Jackson was the first person Jackson ever two stepped with.

(22:34):
You know, he's fourteen now, he was three at the time,
so that's just crazy to think about. And then I
remember when Jamo was a teeny teeny tiny little baby,
and so having known them. You know, Jake and I
got together when Jamo was two, and just having known
them for so long, I know that that helps. But
I truly love being a mother. I love being their

(22:55):
bonus mom. I love, you know, encouraging them and teaching
them and just helping guide them. I don't take lightly
the role that I have in their life in helping
them to develop into responsible citizens, that give back, that
are compassionate to others, that show grace in football to

(23:15):
people who are also kids, and it truly is. It's
one of the greatest joys. I listen to podcasts sometimes
about parenthood and I think one of the greatest things
I ever heard, actually was on a Mel Robins podcast,
was as a step parent, be sure to give that
child time with their parent. That's very, very important. So
in this case, it would be giving Jack and Jmo

(23:37):
one on one time with their dad, because while our
situation is a little different, I've been in their life
the majority of their life for both of them, you know,
knowing and realizing that this isn't the world they were
born into, and so really respecting those boundaries and giving
them that time. But with Jake it's really really important.
But I also just because we are so blessed and

(24:01):
they treat me like a mom. I've never looked at
them as anything other than my own.

Speaker 4 (24:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (24:07):
I have a stepdad named Brian, and he's he's really
proud of me all the time, and I miss him.
He's always gone because he's a pilot and he's just
always gone and I miss him a lot. But I'll
be seeing him when I'm with my mom, so that's exciting. Yeah,
he just came back today.

Speaker 5 (24:27):
Oh, very cool.

Speaker 4 (24:28):
What do you think you're gonna do with him when
you see him?

Speaker 8 (24:31):
Probably give him a big old hug and talk to him,
have a nice dinner with him. And yeah.

Speaker 3 (24:38):
Cool.

Speaker 5 (24:39):
So you have a mom, a dad, a step mom,
and a stepdad. Do you feel really lucky about that?

Speaker 8 (24:44):
Yeah? It small love and I'm grateful. Yeah, and I
ask some questions for you. Okay, all right, what do
you think about video games?

Speaker 4 (25:02):
We need to squeeze in our last commercial break of
the episode, but when we come back, we get a
fat dose of Friday night lights at Jake's old high school.

Speaker 5 (25:15):
Welcome back to the good stuff. Here we go.

Speaker 4 (25:18):
Let's dig in at a Friday night varsity game at
Jake's alma mater, Coppel High School, home of the Cowboys.

Speaker 11 (25:24):
Let's go watch some football.

Speaker 5 (25:42):
Jake, what does Copel High School mean to you?

Speaker 3 (25:46):
I mean, it's very simple.

Speaker 2 (25:47):
I would not be where I am today without the administrators,
the teachers, principals, vice principals, student counselors.

Speaker 3 (25:56):
Hell, the janitors were awesome.

Speaker 2 (25:58):
And you know, one of them is still there and
still recognizes me. And when I go to the games
with the family, and they just mean everything to me
because they saw something in me that I didn't have
the ability to see in me at the time and
never gave up on me. And so shout out to
all of them, all the coaches that played a pivotal
role in me being where I am today.

Speaker 10 (26:31):
I'm Laura Springer. I'm the principal of Cappo High School.

Speaker 4 (26:34):
And if I'm not mistaken, you were a coach or
a teacher here when Jake was in high school.

Speaker 10 (26:38):
Right, I was, And I was Jake's assistant principal for
a little bit. And my thing about Jacob, knowing him
as a teenager, you had to see him the grit,
the work ethic, the drive he had as an athlete
was amazing. I kept trying to get that drive to
move over to the classroom side of everything and to

(26:59):
get out of the bed and come to school. And
there might have been a few times when I have
gone to Jake's house and said, get up, get to school,
because you are going to graduate. I don't care how
if I have to drag you across the stage. But
I have to say, Jacob fo through. Jacob did what
he needed to do, and he is a person that

(27:19):
will always have a huge footprint in my heart because
he is a man that I am so proud of,
in love with my whole heart.

Speaker 5 (27:27):
Well, thank you so much for doing that. Till we
have him, I told you absolutely football season, he never
missed a.

Speaker 10 (27:38):
Football what time, I guarantee you. But when that football
is over, I was like, Jacob, if you throw one
more thing across the.

Speaker 5 (27:44):
Cup tier, how did it feel to go to the
game today? I love.

Speaker 2 (28:03):
Look, it's that's my world, man. And you know, I
just dig that atmosphere. I dig the the energy. It's
awesome to be able to show you Jackson and Jamison.
You're like, Hey, this is what it's all about when

(28:25):
you this is why we work hard. This is why
we put in the extra work, because you know, this
is the feeling that you're you have to look forward to,
and in particular, Kapo High School will be always be
a home away from home.

Speaker 10 (28:37):
For me.

Speaker 5 (28:38):
It did feel like kind of a world of difference
between Jackson's freshman game and then this varsity game.

Speaker 2 (28:45):
It's two different it's two different worlds, and especially in Texas,
when you go from you know, a freshman game and
probably in the traditional sense of what people are picturing bleachers,
you know, to a high school that like Coppell that
you know, a lot of college facilities don't look that way.

Speaker 4 (29:07):
No, yeah, I mean if people have seen Friday Night Lights,
the iconic TV show, it is very much that they
had a full on what are the jumbo tron you know,
with like digital led I don't even know what that
technology is. It's like a full on, like NFL style
stadium screen to watch up there. Thank you sponsors, Yes,
thank you to the spot. Yeah, the Orthodon has had

(29:28):
a bunch of local ads playing.

Speaker 5 (29:31):
No, it was, it was. It was remarkable.

Speaker 3 (29:33):
It really is.

Speaker 2 (29:34):
It's a spiritual deal for me, I mean, especially because
of how I feel about sport football. Yeah, I owe
so much of my life to that sport because it
really pulled them out of a lot.

Speaker 3 (29:43):
Of dark times.

Speaker 2 (29:53):
And John, it was fun to get to share that
with you, especially you have the boat for the boys
in tow. And of course Jamison, I think it took
five minutes and he was sitting on the turf on

(30:14):
the sideline.

Speaker 3 (30:14):
It's like, listen, if they come over here, you have
to get out of the way.

Speaker 5 (30:19):
Uncle Nick was ready to snatch them, I know.

Speaker 2 (30:23):
And then I think it was probably a couple of
minutes later that I snatched him up and then got
in front of actually and Jameson was like, in his feelings,
you grabbed me and pushed me, and I was like,
because I love you, and you weren't paying attention, and
if one of these guys runs into you full speed,

(30:43):
it's gonna be bad.

Speaker 3 (30:45):
Man.

Speaker 2 (30:45):
Pay attention because Jamison, I'm telling you, he's like looking
at the lights, watching his shadow and dancing to watch
his shadow move to his dance moves.

Speaker 1 (30:56):
And I'm like, dude, yeah, that boy have some shadow.

Speaker 5 (31:01):
It's just cool.

Speaker 2 (31:02):
It's because you know, I mean, there's so many different
things in the world that you know, there's so many
differences of opinion, and you know, there's so much vitriol
when you can come together on something as simple as
the game of football.

Speaker 3 (31:18):
Like I think.

Speaker 2 (31:19):
That that and of itself gives you so much positive energy.

Speaker 3 (31:23):
It takes you away from your life for those three hours.

Speaker 2 (31:28):
And you know, you get to get immersed in it.
And I know that for a lot of diehard fans
that can be.

Speaker 5 (31:36):
In the darkness.

Speaker 9 (31:37):
You know, it's not always just like a pure meditation
exactly obsession.

Speaker 2 (31:43):
But I mean that's you get what I'm saying right absolutely.
It's such a cool because there's just not a lot
of things that that give you that you know, they
give you that euphoria. For me anyway, I mean there's
not a lot aside from like personal time, my family
and my spirituality.

Speaker 5 (32:10):
Shop boys.

Speaker 1 (32:13):
First of all, Nick, thank you for you know, hanging
in with us. I know you landed last Wednesday and
we have literally footballed all day every day for the
past six days.

Speaker 5 (32:23):
It was awesome.

Speaker 9 (32:24):
How are you doing it's been yeah, I'm okay, coach,
keep me in the game.

Speaker 4 (32:34):
It was a ton of fun. I love seeing Jackson's
team win. Ashley, you want to catch everyone up on
the other scores of the week.

Speaker 1 (32:41):
The Coppell Cowboys beat the Booie Arlington Volunteers forty seven
to twenty six, and Jamison's Cowboys nine U team lost
buy a field goal late in the fourth.

Speaker 5 (32:51):
Quarter final score three to nothing.

Speaker 1 (32:54):
That was a controversial.

Speaker 3 (32:55):
I'll leave it up to the roof.

Speaker 1 (32:56):
I can't add ten seconds to the clock. Oh yes,
you can.

Speaker 10 (32:59):
You know.

Speaker 2 (32:59):
It's it's crazy though, because it's like the athletes pour
so much time, effort energy into the art, which is
the sport that they've dedicated to, and then the parents
pour so much time effort energy. You get this kid
to this practice, this kid to this practice. You know,
like I'm already had to order Jamison two new mouthpieces
because he's already chewed.

Speaker 3 (33:21):
His first one in half.

Speaker 2 (33:23):
All of this time, effort energy is poured into this thing,
and then because of some guy in a goofy outfit,
it can change it.

Speaker 9 (33:32):
Yeah, you're like, how dare you take this away from
me and my family? I'm coming after you.

Speaker 1 (33:38):
And here's the crazy part about all of it. You
know their kids, their kids, I.

Speaker 5 (33:43):
Mean even when they get to the league.

Speaker 3 (33:45):
Yeah, we're still kids, just like with you know, going
to war.

Speaker 2 (33:49):
You're rock in Afghanistan's fought by a bunch of kids.

Speaker 3 (33:52):
Yeah, but I think that, you know, it develops a lot.

Speaker 2 (33:56):
Of skill sets that a lot of human beings don't
ever get right. Has never been in those types of situations.

Speaker 1 (34:02):
Which is part of the reason we have our boys
in sports. You know, Jake and I were both in
team sports, and we saw the benefits of how they
helped us develop as young humans, and we certainly want
to pass that on to them.

Speaker 5 (34:15):
Well, the love in the house is very apparent, and
I feel it because I'm also a guest in your
house while we're making.

Speaker 4 (34:21):
This this week, and it's just it's been amazing having
dinner with you guys and all that, and uh, you know,
I feel like, you know, the weird uncles off in
the corner.

Speaker 11 (34:31):
Are you kidding me?

Speaker 1 (34:32):
Those boys absolutely adore you.

Speaker 2 (34:34):
They very fun, so much so that this morning we
were doing our gratitude we got to do on the
way to school. So we make the boys, can we
participate to when we don't just make them? We you know,
start a day with Okay, five things were grateful for?
And why Well, Jamison's fifth thing that he was grateful
for this morning was Nick and I kind of snickered

(34:59):
and then he immediately gets pissy and.

Speaker 5 (35:01):
He was like, what, why did you laugh?

Speaker 3 (35:04):
And I was like, bo, but I think it's sweet.
I'm not. It was like a heartfelt giggle.

Speaker 2 (35:10):
Yeah, I said, so, don't don't make it negative because
it was not at all negative.

Speaker 3 (35:16):
It was very sweet and I love that you did that.
Okay why and he was like, you know what I mean.

Speaker 2 (35:23):
Nick really helps you and Ash and you know y'all
love him and he loves you, and I'm grateful for Nick.

Speaker 9 (35:30):
It's one of the greatest things I've ever heard. Thank you,
Thank you for telling me that.

Speaker 5 (35:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (35:35):
Well, and not to be outdone, Jackson actually prayed for
you last night.

Speaker 5 (35:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (35:40):
We we'd say our nightly prayers with them every night,
and you know, we pray for different families that we
know we're going through hard stuff. And then the very end,
Jackson was like, and God, I just thank you for
Nick and him this time we've gotten to spend with
him and him being here at our house and they've absolutely.

Speaker 5 (35:59):
