Speaker 1 (00:00):
What I loved about Kobe's O nine Finals MVP is
he wasn't shine away from the truth is well, I
gotta win with our shack.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
That was that was a talk he would let it
be known, and he played with that, with that anger
and that like that mentality was all over his face
for every single game.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
I want to win. I want to be the reason
we wanted.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Welcome back to another episode of the Greatest of their era?
What's going on? Dot?
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Trey was good?
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Was good? Man? Not much? Man, We had a good
episode last time, man, So I'm excited to jump into
this next topic. Man, the greatest Finals MVPs those in
two thousands, that was a good That's a good era.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
A lot of bump absolutely switching it up a little bit,
getting to getting dollar into topics a little bit more.
And obviously we had some three out of three pet
in this air, so it's talking about a lot of
people from the same teams, but it's different versions of
these people. So I like dialing in the Finals MVPs
because it shows who stepped up in the biggest moments. Obviously,
(01:12):
you have some great regular season MVPs and that kind
of it's a different category. This is when you have
a limited time to showcase what you do and who's
stepping up, Like, like I said, when when your team
needs are the most. And when I talk about some
of these players, I'm gonna obviously bring up clutch and
who's the most clutch, who's most important. But clutch is
not just what you do in the fourth quarter. So
(01:34):
like clutches showing up in that big game five when
your team's on the ropes, or you know what I'm saying,
when when you're down three to two, you trying to
force a game seven.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
This is stuff that's that's gonna come into the picture.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
How important is finals? MVP for criteria, goat talk, you
know what I mean? It's often used, you know what
I mean? Obviously it's series based and not the entire playoffs.
Like I think the NBA should kind of come up
with the most outstanding player for the playoffs because you
got to get like, think about the player that got
you there and he might not have the best finals, right,
(02:07):
I agree, you shouldn't be punished for it. And I
think it's kind of strange when we have these debates
and they're saying oh, well, he didn't win Finals MVP,
and that's like, does that discredit the run, all the work,
all season, you know what I mean, based on two
games or something.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
What's funny is we're talking about the two thousands. But
I growing up, I never really weighed the Finals MVP
and I never heard anybody talking about it really until
I'm gonna say, Steph didn't win Finals MVP in twenty fifteen,
and then all of a sudden in the media just
took its own run and everybody was talking about, oh
he did, he's this and that, but he didn't want
(02:46):
to Finals MVP. And then obviously Jason Tatum clearly the
best player on the Celtics throughout the whole playoff run,
and he was getting the most attention from the I
think it was the Mavericks and the finals. They were
trying to take him out of the game. But Jaln
Brown had a huge serious wins Finals MVP. So people
are trying to use that as a slide against Jason Tatum.
But like I said, if you would have had that
most outstanding player for the playoff runner, the ben Jason Tatum, right,
(03:09):
So yeah, I mean this is it's it's a conversation now,
just because it's another way to look at the greats
and compare them.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
But like growing up, it was never a discussion, right, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
I mean it definitely gets a little tricky, you know
what I mean when you when you think about even
the sensitivity of it, when you really factory down and say,
all right, Chauncey Billups got it. Other you know, two
thousand and four finals and you're just like, okay, all right.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
You know, like even the Tony Parker one. Now you
look at the Tony Parker one, like nobody was like,
oh Tim Duckan and win finals, MVP.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
He weak again. Everybody was like, all right, Tony won
a great series.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
The movie goal posting an argument for ego, you get
what I'm saying. So like nobody should ever be trying
to question Steph or you know, any other guys that
didn't didn't get it at the particular or time because
of that, you know what I'm saying, Because you know
we came obviously.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
You know, yeah, you look at those that twenty fifteen right,
who's carrying away down? As far as the offense, who's
the who the cass worried about hurting the most it
was Steph obviously eagle dollars doing great on defense play
I mean played the tail off, but he wasn't even
starting for that whole playoff.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Run, which is crazy.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
It's such a cross we think it's just a silly thing.
Man overall, man, But let's let's jump into the two thousands. Man,
We're gonna started off with Shaq shat shack. You know
this is this is a main player, Like you know
what I mean. You know we got we got shocked
for three years, you know what I mean? Like, I
don't know if people were like Kobe shit have won one. No,
(04:46):
we knew who the number one option was. Shaq's first
one he averaged thirty eight sixteen and two blocks like
nobody else playing like that.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Now, this is a peak when everybody was talking about
Shaq is the most dominant player ever. Yes, like they
had teams had no answer for shocking these finals run.
I think in two thousand series he had three the
series went the six, he had three forty point games,
just dominant man like and like I said, Kobe was,
he was on his way to being one of the
(05:16):
best players in the league. Definitely a top five, top
ten player, but there was no question who was the
best player on that team, and Shaq showed in the finals.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
And then to follow up fifteen in Ghost, you know,
go fifteen and one dog they he ever thirteen to
fifteen and eight against Matumbo, You know what I mean?
Like who arguing that? Who voted against that? Right now?
You just don it Like if you was one of
the loan voters that didn't pick Shack, you just didn't
(05:46):
like him, you know.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
Yeah, that's that line for two thousand thirty eight sixteen
three blocks whatever. I mean, I'm trying to look at
other finals stat lines for individual players. I can't find
one that's better. I mean, obviously Jordan had some good
ones when he was just scoring the heck out of
the ball. But I mean when you look at two thousand, shock,
(06:09):
I was his numbers went down in two thousand and
one two thousand and two because I mean Kobe was
kind of leveling up a little bit. But I don't
there was no answers for Shaq, and it was like,
I mean, foul him. He was founding all your bigs
out in the finals. I mean, just absolutely dominant.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
Yeah, I mean, I don't even know where to go
with that dude. I mean, obviously, I think he's clearly
going to be a lock for this decade. I just
I don't really see too many rivaling. But as we
go through this list, you got Kobe and oh nine,
you know, just thrashing and you know, going up against
you know, the Orlando Magics in the final, you know
(06:51):
what I mean, Like Kobe's just you know, proved that
he can win without shock and then also just kind
of just going into a dominant man. He didn't play
with his food man when he got to the you know,
got to the big game man, and I think that
was one of those things, you know, uh, just just
going crazy and then he battled around our task. I mean,
it's the whole run. You know, you got the jazz,
(07:13):
the nuggets, uh, you know, because he.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
He What I loved about Kobe's O nine Finals MVP
is he wasn't shine away from the truth as well.
I gotta win without Shaq, you know what I'm saying
that was that was the talking. He would let it
be known, and he played with that, with that anger
and that like that mentality was all over his face
(07:37):
for every single game, Like I wanted to be I
want to win, and I wanted to be. I don't
want to be the reason we won, you know what
I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
Yeah, I think he answered a lot of criticism with
his play and how he won versus actually just talking back,
like he could sit there and talk to guys all day,
Like how I feel like it's more conversational now in
defense versus just responding with winning, you know what I mean.
Like obviously Jackson Tatum finally got him one, you know
(08:07):
what I mean, Like not saying it's Kobe like, but
I'm just thinking, like how do you respond to criticism?
Winning solves all, you know what I mean? And obviously
got hurt and you know, has to get back out
into the swing of things. But overall the Celtics making
it and being good. You know, he been going to
Eastern Conference finals for the longest since his rookie season,
(08:28):
and to finally get one, it was just like, Okay,
there you go. And there's a couple of players like that, man,
you got the Donovan Mitchell's of the world. You got
you know, the Joe On Bees Like it's so many
different players that are that are are heavily criticized about
actually getting their team to the finals, it's not even
about winning, it's just just even making it to the finals.
(08:48):
It just shows how difficult that road is and how
poised to your team and everybody has to be ready
to even get you into that position.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
But what's dope about that for me about sports and
playing in the league in general, is when you set
those goals and expectations for yourself where it's not like
the media is doing it too. I feel like sometimes
when when Brown was trying to win his ring, or
he was trying to do the certain things, he let
the media's opinion the way he was trying to like
avoid like it wasn't bothering, but you knew it was.
(09:17):
When it came to Kobe like he was, he said,
He'll sit down to interview and tell you this is
my expectation for me.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
That's why I want to do it.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
I don't care what yet, I'm not listening to y'all.
I'm like, I put the most pressure on myself. And
he really did that.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
Yeah, and he lived with the results. You know what
I'm saying, Like, all right, we ain't win, I'm in.
I'm locked in for the rest of the summer. I'm
locked in until whenever we got I'm gonna get my
body right, I'm gonna get my mind right. I'm gonna
work on the things that I you know, certain shots
that I couldn't you know, add to my game. I'm
just thinking about it in that way. And you know,
like he responded, Uh, Dwayne Wade, Man, that team was
(09:54):
full of vets. Obviously he got shock his you know,
Shock his his fourth and you know this was way
just hoping brog like really thinking about it. I think
it was year four for him, well year three, and uh,
you know, just going crazy.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
Man.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
His stat's thirty six ten five four three in game
six to close it out. It was it was no
question and he got the nickname Flash. Obviously he dumped it,
you know, but for the time, you know, Flash was
an actual, real era pre Lebron pre you know, longevity heat,
you know what I mean. And he was he was
(10:34):
going crazy on Dallas.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
Man, this might be my favorite guard playoff performance. It's
up there, ever, I.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
Will say, looking back at it now.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
Set the like set the stage.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
They're down two right against the Mavericks, down big in
game three, right, They've been down big game in game three,
So like if they use game three, the series is over.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
Cook.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
He just turned it up and the last looking at
my nose. The last four games he averaged almost forty
thirty nine something. He averaged forty games slot now now
being in Dallas. If you ask him, Dallas fans or
Mark Cuban a.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
Gonna say much the line too much. He was getting fair.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
Yeah, they said the he was going to the line,
but he was putting that pressure. He was attacking the rim.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
That was his game. Like it was I'm getting to
the line.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
I'm He's all and everywhere, So you don't you kind
of put in a weird situation of is it a
file or not? But he just playing so hard that
like the momentum working in his favor man. And like again,
like you mentioned, like it's one of the most impressive
takeovers we've seen in a minute. Man, it's very kobesque.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
You're young, Like for a young dude to come in
and get that so quick with a team like you
look at you look back like he had a bunch
of vets who knew how to do it, but they
were washed up.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
He carried them, man, He carried them dudes, man, because
it was getting to a point of like all right, yeah, yeah,
got all these dudes. There's a bunch of names like
Tom Walker, Jason Williams Alonzo warning back, Gary Kay, you
know what I'm saying, Like James Posey. You know, Darrell
Wright didn't even play even get in, but like they
were just stacked when you really think about that team,
(12:17):
you know what I mean? So real, real, fun, serious
to watch me. I might have to rewatch that and
go back and watch it.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
I've watched. I watched some of them games.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
Paul Pierce Peter already said he can't be in my
top five, but man, he was spanking the Lakers dog.
The only thing that was sorry was the wheelchair. The
wheelchair probably was the sorriest thing. But outside of that,
they couldn't do nothing with pe. You know what I'm saying.
He put up thirty eight and eight bro in game.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
People for the people that don't know about his career
and look back and like he was. He might be
over raady to understand how good he was. You gotta
look at these series.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
But also just the time he didn't have nobody. He
was cook like night and night out, like people don't
even know, like a rookie year.
Speaker 1 (13:04):
Yeah, but that's the argument where like, oh, he's meaningless buckets.
That's the meaningless buckets argument. This is what he had.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
But I don't even think it's meaningless buckets because he
was still getting to the playoffs. You get what I'm saying,
Like he still was running into some good teams. He's
just saying he had young like Bro, they shipped Chauncey out,
They shipped a bunch of people out. Bro, he had
teammates Ron Ron Mercer, Like I'm something by the time
they got Anton Walker even they traded Anton Walker and
Anton Walker came back like it was just to a
(13:30):
point that was running to them JKD nets teams, they
was running to them, iverson team, run to fitz Carter's
like they just didn't have it like dog like they
really he needed really at least one player. So to
get Ray and KG, it just took a lot of
weight off of him and like he let that team.
It wasn't like, oh, this is Kg's team and.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
That was their first year together. Yeah, right, Doc, they remember,
I mean talking to my father in law dark about it.
That the whole team and getting that team together, like
it was pressure on them to perform because you knew
KG was getting older. You thought you knew Ray Allen
was getting older. You know he would be able to
play as long as he did at that level. But
I mean it was pressure for them. They had like
a two three year window to really get it done.
(14:12):
And when Pierce was asking for a team like that
for a long time, people to come over and help them.
And once you get to that stage, you gotta perform,
like you gotta go through some juggernauts.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
Yes, like front office made every possible move for you
got to get it done now that window short, bro.
The only thing that made me mad about them is
they only won one, you know what I mean, And they.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
Talked about injuries too many.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
A lot, you know what I'm saying. They went back
to back like how they how they talk. But they
it was a good team, bro.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
In the games they lost in the second year, in
the game seven, there was one game away with some injuries.
I think, uh, who was Kendrick Perkins went down like
which is an underrated injury for them because I mean
he was there.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
They started in there at the time.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
But I mean they yeah, they they make it seem
like they riding that one championship into the grave.
Speaker 3 (15:09):
They owe four Pistons too, Like it's it's a few
joints that like done, got won and made it seem
like they just won a bunch, you know what I mean.
But one thing about the old four Pistons, a lot
of people didn't think that, you know, they was gonna
beat the Lakers, and they you know, they did prevailed.
But yeah, charlista Charlstall Boston Celtics. That's probably the one
time I rooted for the Celtics over the Lakers. That
(15:30):
was a weird year because I was a big run
though guy too, so I was really like, let's go.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
I was a Ray Allen guy. Man.
Speaker 1 (15:37):
I love watching this game moving out the ball like
that team was just fit. Man, they fit, they were
all they had came at the right time and.
Speaker 3 (15:47):
Yeah, you know what I'm saying, like the Vet yeah polls,
you know what I'm saying. Poles knew how to win,
so him coming over there was instrumental. PJ.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
Brown, like, dude.
Speaker 3 (15:59):
Such a such an interesting team, man, like for real,
for real, like when you think about how to win
a championship and acquire guys mid season, I felt like
them and the Pistons were the teams that knew how
to work the free agency and buy out market the best.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
Like you don't see that a lot anymore in the league.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
Like people players at that age, Yeah, coming over usually,
I mean, if it does happen, it usually don't work out.
But like to see older guys they last leg come
over trying to get a ring and feeling this feeling
trying to get a ring and feel in a specific
role and having a workout like you win a championship.
You know, teams just like teams kind of stopped doing
(16:38):
it because it don't work out as much like the guy.
Speaker 3 (16:43):
Though, you know what I mean, you know, because a
lot of these teams are very young and they just
ain't trying to hear that. So, like to think about
if Harrison Barnes joined uh A Cleveland Lakers randomly, you
know what I mean, Like they already got their flow
(17:04):
going so to be like, all right, yo, not only
are we gonna bring you in, but we're gonna start you,
you know what I mean, Like they would do stuff
like that, like, oh, we're gonna start you, We're gonna
push out, We're.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
Gonna see it from Chris Middleton but he stayed. I mean,
he stayed in that. He was like, we're going to
see him.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
Yeah, he was like, no, what's up with that?
Speaker 3 (17:22):
You why why you think he wanted to stay?
Speaker 2 (17:26):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
I think I mean it might be one of those
things where he didn't find the spot where he could
go where you.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
Play a significant role. That's that might have been.
Speaker 1 (17:35):
I mean, I'm sure he gazed the market was like, nah,
it's not because I said.
Speaker 3 (17:38):
I had Detroit, I had teams like that.
Speaker 1 (17:43):
He could have went, but they weren't problems in here.
He was gonna get his fifteen twenty five minutes at night.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
So it's like a fair. They probably like you might play,
you might not.
Speaker 1 (17:52):
You don't want to go over there and get to
catch d MPs and then you don't get the opportunity.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
Next year, your career over and respect.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
To the champ. But he a name. Now, he a name.
He's just a name, like until he'd be like, hey,
I'm all the way back my knee good. He a name,
you know, and you know how you know how I
get when you a name. If you're a one time
All Star, you're a two time All Star. That on paper,
it sounds great. It's like you got until you see
(18:19):
the product and it's like, hey, he a shell of himself,
you know, and you're watching it with other players, and
that's respect to them man, in the longevity they have.
But their body just be breaking down. Man, over time,
and you keep acquiring.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
Them, it happens. I mean, that's what that's what's supposed
to happen.
Speaker 1 (18:33):
You've seen, Yeah, you've seen Katie's steps, Bronze, all these
other pe who getting older and they ain't lost a step.
When you get thirty five, thirty six, well you're supposed
to lose a step. That was the ninety nine percent
the players, so you can't that time.
Speaker 3 (18:48):
Three they have different cream of the crop. Man another
another back to back guy and well not back to back,
but you know, close and close in time. Tim Duncan, damn.
I always wonder about his life without the Spurs, and
obviously wake Forest is the only closest thing that we're
ever going to see to like him playing non system basketball.
(19:15):
But man, he was cold, dude. And his numbers ain't
even like crazy crazy like they're they're just solid numbers
because you know, like those spurs, those those spurs final
scores are like ninety two to eighties.
Speaker 2 (19:28):
That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (19:28):
So like the numbers defense, his numbers ain't juice. So
when you see he in the three average twenty four
and seventeen and five and five blocks you added to
a regular pace game seventeen crazy though, that's crazy. That's
like thirty and twenty. If you're playing a faster pace,
they slow it down and get methodical, and so it's
(19:49):
like boring basketball. But that's crazy numbers when you look
at it.
Speaker 2 (19:54):
Yeah, twenty four, seventeen, five and five.
Speaker 3 (19:57):
Come. I don't even know if the rebound is like
as glorified as it was, but that time.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
I think rebounding the playoffs, I think it's worth something
in the playffs even today regular season because that.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
Can win you a game. It's fake that can win you.
That can win you a game for sure, every every
possession matters. He showed up big on the O reps.
He got up seven O reps, like you know, I
could see that for sure. But that twenty four seventeen
in two thousand and three, that's like buying a house
and eighty eight, you know, said he.
Speaker 1 (20:30):
Was carrying that group and three like, yeah, so you
had because you had David Robinson was on the team,
but he.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
Was washed up. He was on his last leg.
Speaker 1 (20:38):
Then you had with the man who and Tony who
were young bucks. They weren't really ready for the moment.
So he he carried them and took them through.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
I'm looking here.
Speaker 1 (20:49):
Game six, the last game he had twenty one, twenty
ten and eight blocks.
Speaker 2 (20:53):
That's a that's almost a quadruple dog. Yeah, he's in
the game six.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
In the Game six, he left it all on the
floor bumping.
Speaker 1 (21:02):
Yeah, I underrated, man. I don't care when they but
he wanted the best of all. He underrated just because
people didn't like watching the Spurs. Yeah, and you got
Kobe out there in LA who was doing it at
the same time.
Speaker 3 (21:13):
It's like, I think he would have been loved in
this era. How people love Jokic as like basketball purists
and saying, oh, he's a big that pass so he
got a soft touch, Like it didn't really marvel a
lot of people. I think a lot of people wanted
Bigs to just throw hook shots, rebound and dunk. So
the Finesse era, it was still kind of like, all right,
(21:36):
you got a twenty footer because you know, Patrick, you
don't have twenty like them dudes could shoot that MIDI Yeah,
and you know if you ain't making it, you got
the crowd yelling at you stopped taking that shot.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
You know what I'm saying, Like I'm kind of comparing
more to like a just the thought of him. Two
more about Joe L and B because people Joel trying
to get trying to get foul on every possession. He
keeps it simple with his post moves, his phades. Some
people love washing this, some people don't like watching it,
but he's I mean, you can't you can't deny how
(22:08):
good he is, how dominated he is. So I think
that's kind of like what Tim Duncan was like back
in the day.
Speaker 3 (22:13):
Yeah, I mean just fun to watch man and just
huge on fundamental juice on the backboard, like just defending man,
you know what I mean, like knee on the last leg,
bro all out. You know what I'm saying, Like I
watched it many times, like bro, this dude's so good man,
And I wasn't one of those dudes because like I'm
(22:34):
like a ton I like Tony Parker, I like guys
like that that just like run the offense. You know,
he a little greedy though, but you know he scored
a little bit. But for the most part, system guy.
I love all system guys that that that just played
that style.
Speaker 1 (22:48):
Yeah, Tony was the yeah when it got he was.
But later in the decade, like when he got the
O seven chip, he was everybody ate and then he
closed the games like he had the.
Speaker 2 (22:59):
Ball in his hands he wanted. He went passing.
Speaker 3 (23:01):
Dude, that was unstoppable. So you know when you think
about he had to match up with Steve ash and
Darren Williams in the conference finals, like dog, he getting
that paint high sixties, you know what I mean, like
high sixties. That's a tear drop, bro, And everybody the
whole world knew he was going right and you still
couldn't stop him and his in the end speed.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
I remember playing against my first and second year in
the league. Man, I was first of all, I was
like happy to be I had to see how it
was like because you watch him the.
Speaker 2 (23:29):
How is he doing this? Get in game? Made pretty house.
Speaker 1 (23:32):
He getting to the lane, flow to the lab every time
that he's going right in and out. But the city
he had the system down packed like he would run
little double pinned downs to get on the ball with
the edge going right, or he would set you up
to left hand and he would be going left with
his right hand and just crafty.
Speaker 2 (23:50):
Getting to the lane. And it was a little tough
cover even when he was older.
Speaker 3 (23:54):
This next one, Chauncey Billups like Chauncey Phillups is, you know,
like that's he's also one of my my like my
favorite little you know V Finals MVP run because like
watching that that team, you know of the old four
Pistons kind of bump they they kind of beat you down,
(24:17):
but like they was more defensive anchored and then obviously
ripped running off the curl, running through a million screens,
you got sheet. But Chauncey Dog. Every once in a
while he would show out. He would hit three. He
hugged the line though he'd been hugging the line like
high school three down there, he hugged the line, knock
down the three quote unquote, mister big shot, you know
(24:38):
what I mean, because he's putting, you know, And that's.
Speaker 2 (24:40):
When he got that's when he solidified the nickname clutch.
Speaker 3 (24:43):
Right He in there in them games used to be
nasty too. They'd be like eighty nine eighty four, you
know what I'm saying. But like every so often he
would have his little swag about it, like he'd get
a steal, do a two hand dump, but he'd be
very calm, and he used to be like dang man,
the best guard in the game. But it's weird because
(25:04):
you could kind of like, you gotta really love Chancey
to make that type of argument, because you know, you
had chasing kid, you had guys like you know.
Speaker 1 (25:13):
You knew it was a difference. You knew it was
levels between Chauncey and those other point guards. But Chauncey
in the in the clutch, when it got under under
three minutes, he leveled up. You knew he was gonna
have a ball. You knew he was gonna take the
big shots, make it more times than not. But doing
like I think part of what was doing the meat
(25:34):
meat part of the game, Like he was just running
the team.
Speaker 2 (25:37):
Everybody.
Speaker 1 (25:37):
It was like equal opportunity team. They were just a
good The sum of all parts is better than the
individual players, I think. So you didn't really know whose
night it was gonna be. But at the end of
the game, the ball was gonna be in Chauncey's hands
and afaging twenty one and five in the finals.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
That don't sound crazy, but when you.
Speaker 3 (25:58):
Actually go look at them games and look at the
that ship, like Doc the number they put on Kobe, bro,
and it's like, yo, let let.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
Kobe try beat us guard and they was garden.
Speaker 3 (26:12):
Garden, you know. Lindsey Hunter talk about it to this day,
like how he would guard Kobe. You know, I'm like
got to get in him a little bit, you know
what I'm saying, Like you ain't gonna stop Kobe, but
you're gonna got to make it way difficult. And you know,
Kobe probably was shoving them off like hey, bro, like
y'all can't y'all can't mess with me, you know. But
that individualism, man, like you you you break that team,
(26:33):
you know, break what's going going great. You know it's
gonna go the other way, you know, because you're gonna
keep trying to find your shots and get hot man.
And you know, Malone was hurt, so like a lot
of a lot of factors changed, you know, but people
still thought the Lakers was gonna win.
Speaker 1 (26:49):
Yeah, you gotta think about it. They were considered I
mean I don't think that we had the word back then.
But they were a super team, like they had all
the names. They had got cop see Kobe, Yeah, Gary
get Gary Payton.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
Like Gary Payton was trying to find it. Boy, they
were the heavy favorites. He was trying to before he
found his way to Miami. He was trying to find it.
He was on every team. Possibly I gotta keep me
going before I get up out of here. And that
was like looking at it, like yo all Eves, like
I know him better than him, but I got I
cannot be the one to not have one. So it's
(27:25):
so interesting to see guys like Peyton, Jason Williams, you
know Sam could sell get multiple you know what I mean,
Like they just and they was solid. They was solid
guards for real, like really put in work.
Speaker 1 (27:39):
But you know, it was kind of like the look
last year, like the finals Pacers. Okay, see okay, see
heavy favorites. Indiana come in a good team. You don't
even expect them to be there. It's like if they
would have up to upset them in five, that's kind of.
Speaker 3 (27:55):
Like what this was, like, oh yeah it would have
been that's howls dropped, Like Bro Indiana be a different
place right now. I'm not even gonna lie snow or not,
it'd be a different place. You know, it was Tyres
would have been you know, they would have been trying
to plot on a whole repeat or trying to you know,
be a strong favorite. And I think they still don't
(28:16):
get enough respect on how often, Like you know, they've
gotten to the Eastern Conference finals and with the with
the squads they had, they're sexy team, you know what
I mean, Like it's Tyrese Miles Turner with the names
and then you get trade for Pascal Siakam and you
know it's just it's just gets tricky, man. But man,
it's a you know, two thousands is just an interesting overall.
Speaker 1 (28:39):
Yeah, I mean, how many teams won, I mean it's big.
How many teams wanted the championship in the two thousands.
You got Lakers, Spurs, he won, Celtics, Seltics one, Pistons one. Yeah,
like it's the Lakers dominant. And then you thought Lakers
and Spurs is coming out of the West every year.
Speaker 3 (28:59):
You felt like yeah, I mean, I don't know why,
you know, it's parody, bro, Like you know, like this
it is what it is. The storyline is what it is,
and it's always been that way. So I don't know
why we're making it seem like the NBA ain't some
organization that has had many teams just go out and
(29:19):
go do the thing, you know what I mean? Like
the cream of the crop has always been in the mix.
We're gonna take a quick break, but when we come back,
we're gonna go through our top five greatest finals MVPs
in the two thousands. All right, Dot, we're back, man,
(29:49):
We're gonna talk through the two thousands. There's some interesting
finals MVPs. There's some multiple names on there. I'm interested
to see what your top five is.
Speaker 1 (29:58):
All right, I got number number five. I got Kobe
oh nine Finals MVP versus the Magic, the first one
by himself without shock. Number four, I got Chauncey. That's
one of my prime memories growing up, seeing the Pistons
win that chip against the Lakers, who supposed to be Juggernaut.
(30:20):
So mister big shot at four three, I got d Wade,
that that dominant finals run. Two, I got Tim Duncan
and one two thousand shock, okay, unstoppable.
Speaker 3 (30:35):
Yeah, I ain't mad at that, man. I'm glad you're
specific about the what version of shaqh was talking about. Yeah, man,
So for me, I'm gonna go with Paul Pierce at five, Yes, Peter,
I'm doing it at four. At four, I'm gonna go
(30:56):
with Kobe, you know, winning it without Shack. At three,
gotta go with d Wade. I'm aligned with you on
that MM. At two, I'm going with Tim Duncan back
you know, like one, two and in a two year span,
you know what I mean, doing a three year span,
(31:18):
three and o five, So got to respect to that
dominant performance leader of the team solidified, you know, two
of the five rings that he acquired during this decade,
and then also Shack and the Shack I'm gonna actually
roll with. I'm gonna roll with actual the old one
(31:41):
Shock because he played on a bad foot and like
you know, like his foot was really bad and then
went all the way into three, he just opted out
of these surgeries. Man, his foot was really bad. And
you know, Kobe was really only even talking about he
got a shape, and he never really expressed it till
like after. So it it get really tricky, man, because
(32:02):
what he was capable to do on a bad foot
and the whole like that. When it finally came out,
it was like, oh, this is why he can't run,
This is why he picked up an extra twenty pounds,
this is why you know what I mean, Like because
it was making it like he was avoiding surgery. He
would have missed a lot of time. His foot was
tore up like tore up like you know, and the
(32:23):
fact that he ended up finally getting the right before
you know, Miami and stuff like that. But that was
a knock on his on his whole joint. Obviously. It
was like a kind of a night off with the Sixers,
you know what I mean, Charleston with Tumbo, but he
couldn't do nothing with Shaq at that point, and then
you know he was dunking on the entire squad in
New Jersey, so kind of similar. Man, we are good,
(32:44):
good little run, good little run. I like your five though. Man,
you did good with that having Chancey in there. I
couldn't double back on it. So you know, I'm glad
that I got to use a La Native Inglewood Paul
Pierce for mine. But I'm interested for our listeners to
let us know who has the best one.
Speaker 1 (33:04):
While we talking NBA Finals appearances, and I was I'm
big on that. Shack two thousand stat line ranked these
three and order when I order your best finals performances
stat line, whatever you got MJ ninety three, forty one,
eight and six, Lebron twenty sixteen come back versus Warriors
(33:29):
twenty nine to eleven and nine. Basically, Shack thirty eight,
sixteen two blocks, and yan Is thirty five, thirteen and
five and twenty twenty one.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
So out of those, I'm.
Speaker 3 (33:43):
Gonna go with Shack one. Okay, I'm gonna go Michael
Jordan two because averaging forty is just insane. Yeah, I'm
gonna go Bron three. And then I'm gonna go elgend
Baylor four.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
I didn't bring that up, but yeah, yeah, Elgin.
Speaker 3 (34:06):
Baylor forty eight. But actually hold, but that's no.
Speaker 2 (34:12):
That's sixty two. Man. I don't even think play a
different game.
Speaker 3 (34:15):
It's all right, it's all right. I'm gonna keephim that.
Speaker 1 (34:17):
Kind of with modern. I don't think Giannis is over that.
I got Shock in MJ, but I think Jannis is
up there with that. Bron I was gonna come back,
it's crazy him, but he had Kyrie running with him.
Who them two playing those three games and five, six,
and seven. I never seen a duo play that good.
So yeah, they Kyrie was right there with Bron neck
(34:39):
and neck, and obviously Kyrie hit the maybe the best
shot in playoff history to win the series.
Speaker 2 (34:47):
But I mean, Bro, Bronna had some numbers in the fun.
Speaker 3 (34:53):
Now Bron's he's an alien bro when you really think
about it, I try to strip away the team made
aspect of it, all right and just say Lebron showing up?
What we getting out of Lebron? Only?
Speaker 2 (35:05):
Oh we all wear at all?
Speaker 1 (35:07):
Though, because he knew he had Kyrie with him, That's
the only thing Johannes is ain't really He he had
Drew and Chris Middleton. Yeah, Chris was the clothes. They
weren't gonna go out and get forty.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
Yeah. No, you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (35:20):
Yeah, Ron knew you walk into a game with Kyrie
playing at the peak of his powers, the way he
was locked in in that series. You're like, all right,
I got a hoop because us too. I got a hoop,
but I know I got to kill it with me. Yeah,
so that gives you a little bit of extra edge.
Speaker 3 (35:35):
No, that's real.
Speaker 2 (35:36):
That's that's that's why we're at all. That's why weigh
at all.
Speaker 3 (35:39):
But I feel what you saying, Miche was greedy though, Man,
God gave my gotta get shack and there you know,
elegence numbers look so silly. Forty point six points per game,
seventeen point nine rebounts game. Let us know, man, Rick
Rick Barry too was the od Rick Berry forty point
eight like they was scoring, they was scoring. He getting
(36:00):
into the lines doing the Grandma's shot. He going crazy.
So this is definitely interesting. That's a great question by you, man,
because I'm just looking at it, man, like.
Speaker 1 (36:11):
I want to know the feedback any other finals performances, y'all,
y'all like out there, or if.
Speaker 2 (36:17):
Y'all want to rank him, let us know, maybead.
Speaker 3 (36:21):
Probably I gotta I gotta go back and look at
his overall numbers, man, But.
Speaker 1 (36:25):
I mean, steph twenty twenty two finals insane. I don't
know those numbers off top.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
But yeah, he was.
Speaker 3 (36:31):
He was going crazy, like when when when the chips
is down and Stephan need the ball, he got to
shoot a high volume of like shots free score. His
numbers be crazy like it'd be like how And I
know how because he got it, but just watching it
actually go in and you look he had what.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
Yeah, I mean that was another one.
Speaker 1 (36:52):
He ha was thirty one, six and five, And that
was another one where going against the best defensive team
in the league and he really first and second option,
Like it's like, if I don't get thirty thirty five,
we ain't winning.
Speaker 3 (37:08):
You ain't got no shot. Yeah, we ain't got we
don't got a shot at all. So yeah, no shots
at thirty thirty thirty. Know what he gotta do when
you get there. All right, man, we're gonna take a
quick break and when we come back, we're gonna do
our favorite segment. Born in the Wrong Era? All right,
(37:40):
Dot Man, amazing question you asked in the last segment.
But I need to hear who was born in the
wrong era? Who would get Finals MVP in this current era?
Speaker 2 (37:53):
Roll with the Black Mama man, Kobe Kobe. I mean.
Speaker 1 (37:58):
That was he was kind of living in that modern
day social media first take, like, oh, what's the what's
the repercussions if if I don't win this this championship,
if I don't get this finals MVP. He was one
of those few ones on this list that had that
media scrutiny every day, he was putting it on himself
as well. So like for him to come through and
get that championship at oh nine and uh just kind
(38:22):
of get that monkey off his backwards.
Speaker 2 (38:25):
That's I felt like he was playing in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 3 (38:29):
Yeah, no, absolutely, I'm gonna go with I'm going with
Tim Duncan. Okay, I think Tim Duncan would actually do
his thing, man, because you compared to the NB. I
think obviously he gonna get way more touches. He gonna
be used a way differently. He might step out shoot
(38:50):
way more threes, and I just think that he gonna
he gonna be good man. I think the three will
be high. It'd be up a thirty seven some in
up there because he's gonna keep keep practicing it, you
know what I mean, and spread the floor. I just
think he'll be effective. Can't can't do nothing with him
in the post, call it call the day, and he
(39:11):
played defense, so on both ends, you can't him. I
would love to be I would love to see him
and Yokic play him and them b matchup.
Speaker 1 (39:20):
Yeah, And I mean he played the four in his
time a lot, but he was a four to five
like he was scale up to that five with no problem,
especially in today's game.
Speaker 3 (39:30):
Oh yeah, no, I ain't be sick. Man. This was
a fun episode man. We got a chance to really
talk it out, see it through, look through different numbers,
really dissect think about it man. Some some some real
hoopers on this list, man, And it was hard to
dissect and bring those five man. But a great blast
(39:51):
from the past, man, dot where can they find you?
Speaker 2 (39:55):
That's Doc Curry on all socials. Chop it up?
