Speaker 1 (00:50):
Listen to m hm mm hmm. Welcome to the Hank
Handy Podcast, brought to you by Haniuniversity dot com. That
is where you can find my information about golf lessons
from me at the golf practice in Highland Park, Illinois
(01:14):
and at the Coronado Golf Course in Scottsdale, Arizona. So
those are two places where I'm teaching. You can also
register my free instructional videos at hanuniversity dot com. All right,
I'm watching this weekend a lot of golf, well this
coming weekend movie watching a real lot of golf because
(01:36):
the Masters is coming up. But let's just review what
happened on Sunday in golf. I actually watched all three tournaments.
I watched LPGA. My buddy Rick Silverman got me, I
got me tuned into that. I was on the phone
with him. He says, you see this playoff. You know
they're they're having a playoff. Well, they were having a
(01:57):
match play out in Vegas Shadow Creek. I said, what
course they plane? He says, I don't know, and he's
out in Las Vegas. I was like, man, it looks
like Shadow Creek. I said, I had to check that
out because I love Shadow Creek. Anyway, Nellye Cord was playing.
She's the best player in the world. She probably has
the best golf swing in the world. Like people ask me,
(02:20):
who has the best swing on the PGA Tour. The
best swing on the PGA Tour isn't on the PGA Tour.
The best swing in golf is on the LPGA Tour,
No no doubt about it, Nelly Quarter. I think she
has you know, I like other other swings, but I
like her swing. I like her swing the best. I think.
I think, I think that's going to be number one
(02:41):
on my list. Right But when I'm watching I'm wondering,
why did she swing at it faster. I mean, it's beautiful,
it's rhythmic, it's it's it's she's got great tempo. Looks
like she could hit it like thirty yards farther than
she hits it. She has such a pure swing. Oh
my gosh, one four term in a row, going for
(03:02):
the record held by Nancy Lopez in the next tournament.
Five tournaments in a row LPGA record. Anyway, I never
talked about the LPGA, but I just I'm starting off
talking about the LPJ because I'm watching that tournament from
Shadow Creek in Vegas, and I'm thinking, this girl swing
(03:22):
is so pure. You know some some people swings well,
it's kind of like it's kind of like sports figures.
They transcend the whole game. And earlier in the day
they had a big day watching watching women's sports, which
I'm not opposed to watching women's sports, but there's got
(03:44):
to be something that really interests me. And I watched
that Caitlin Clark and the NCAA Finals. South Carolina was
just dominant and she couldn't do anything about it. And
I'm like watching this something poor girl. I mean, they
ever gonna let it rest. I mean, she plays like
every minute of the game that Caitlin Clark for Iowa.
But I watched that. That was a chance to watch
(04:07):
absolute greatness. And then I turned on the LPGA match
play because that was a chance to watch greatness again.
Because that golf swing from Nelly Corny is absolute, absolute greatness.
Watching the women's basketball, I can appreciate the great passing
(04:28):
and they shoot gray. I mean like it that was
that was improb Like I've never watched women's basketball before,
and that was pretty good. I got admit. Watching the
women's golf, I don't watch that much either, because when
I look at it, I see that there's nothing. And
(04:48):
this isn't a negative, this is just a fact. There's
nothing the women do that is better than the men. Nothing.
I mean, they don't put better, they don't chip better,
they don't seandshot it better. They don't iron play it better,
they don't do anything better. There's not anything they do better.
(05:10):
They don't hit it farther, they don't do anything better.
But Nellie Corda swings better than anybody. That got me watching.
So I would have to say that if she's on
the lead, and especially if she's going for like some
kind of history, you know, like the next time she
plays breaking the women's mark or tying it for most
(05:34):
amount of wins. Ever, I'm gonna be watching. I'm gonna
I'm gonna check it out. Greatness will get me to watch.
There's no There's no two ways about it. Okay. The
next thing I watched, I watched it simultaneously. I had.
You know, people say that the ratings are terrible on LIV. Well,
I mean they're looking up the CW or whatever channel
they're on. But they're all over the place. They're on
(05:55):
your phone, they're on your computer, they're on your iPad,
they're streaming. I mean they're all over the place, and
they're all over the place, all over the world. So
I think I think there are more people watching than
you think. But I'm watching on my phone on the
l I V. And I'm watching on the TV on
the PGA tour. I'm watching them both at the same time.
(06:19):
You know, I'm joining them both. I mean this, ok shay,
But how do you say, is that Mahati but tilla?
Ok Shay but tia. I think that's how you say it. Oksha,
That kid is good. Jesus, twenty two year old lefty
(06:40):
he is he. I mean, now that kid's worth watching too.
I'll watch that kid too. I like, it's hard for
me to watch the PGA tour too. I said, it
was hard for me to watch the LPGA tour. It's
hard for me to watch the PGA tour. Hay, this
this is These leaderboards are brutal. But I would have
to say then the next time this kid's played, see
(07:01):
this is what you this is what you need. You
need you need some kind of greatness or you need
somebody that you think this could be the next greatness.
And I didn't really watch that kid. I watched him.
I saw him play as an amateur. It was like
(07:22):
eighteen years old or whatever. I saw him down there
in uh at Myrtle Beach and uh just watched him
hit on the range a little bit and they said, oh, yeah,
that's uh Aksha Bahita or Bahadi or Batilla Batiya, ak
Sha batiya, that's ok Sha batiya. And uh, I keep
(07:45):
saying Bahadi because that's that's like Adam Levine's wife's name.
But Batilla, Batilla, Akha batiya. And I'm watching him and
they said, that kid's turn him pro, and I'm like, what, like,
how old is that kid? He said, like eighteen, he's
turning pro. I'm like, wow, man, that's uh. He must
be good. He must be really good. And he is.
(08:08):
You know, he made his way on the tour, played
his way on the tour. You know, buy dot com
or whatever they call that thing. He got his got
his way up there, and next thing you know, he's uh,
he's knocking on the door on the on the very
very very like extremely watered down PGA Tour. I mean,
(08:31):
oh my goodness, gracious. I mean, these leaderboards are scary.
I mean they are scary. Matter of fact, after Oxhi wins,
he talks about Denny McCarthy and he said, you know,
he was putting the pressure on me on the back nine.
Actually I had a six shot league go in the
(08:52):
back nine, six shot lead, and I love the I
love the cat option. On the pjtour dot Com it said,
uh acuhay, he squanders or what did they say? He
squandered his his his lead. And I'm like, he what
(09:17):
I mean? He did what? The other guy made seven
straight birdies? He made seven straight birdies and they go,
he's like, squandered his lead or something. I mean, like
squanders a six shot lead, is what it says he made.
(09:38):
He shot sixty seven. I mean, the guy at the
lead going into Sunday, but Tia shoots sixty seven, squanders
his six shot. The other guy made seven birdies on
Danny McCarthy and actually says he's one of the best
players on the tour. Now, that, right there is what's
(09:59):
wrong with the PGA Tour. Like if that guy is
one of the best players on the PGA Tour, and
I'm not saying he's not. He's made twelve million dollars
and he's you know, I mean, he's you know, he
seems like a really nice guy. And but if that's
the best, if that's one of the best players on
the PGA Tour, that's where the PGA Tour is right now.
(10:22):
That that's exactly where the PGA Tour is right now.
That Denny McCarthy is one of the best players on
the PGA Tour. I mean, he's got a nice swing.
He's thirty one years old, though, and he's all of
a sudden one of that he never won, never won
a tournament, never never won a tournament in his uh
(10:45):
in his in his career. Never Never, He's played one
hundred and seventy four events, made one hundred and nineteen cuts.
He's one of the best players on the PGA Tour. Wow,
I mean he made fifteen million dollars. Now, I guess
he made a bunch of money at this one too. Anyway,
(11:08):
that guy, here's my thoughts on this. I'm gonna tell
you what Denny McCarthy is. Denny McCarthy is the leader.
He is the leader in the clubhouse. You know what
he's in the leader in the clubhouse. In logos, he
is the logo leader. I'm watching this telecast and I'm like,
(11:31):
first off, he's got this hat on Sovos Sovos, No
earthly idea, what Sovos is? Secretariat on the on one chest,
No idea, what secretariat is? I thought that was a
a great Kentucky Derby winner. Am Trust Insurance, Okay, obviously
(11:55):
that's an insurance company. Then we got the show. Maybe
there's something maybe it's echo, could be echo. Maybe there's
another one, another letter in there I'm missing. And he's
got another logo on he he's got he's got double
logos on his collar, one on the right collar, one
on the left collar. He's got a hat logo, two
(12:16):
sides of the hat logos, and he's got a logo
in his back, and he's got two logos on his sleeves.
Non even I don't know what, I'm watching the telecast
and I'm counting them up. Can't help myself. I'm counting
them up. And this guy's got some kind of agent.
I don't know who his agent is, but his agent
is selling stuff. This guy on his shirt, on his shirt,
(12:41):
just only on his shirt, and these aren't small. He
has seven logos, seven Low, not one of a company
I've ever heard of, seven Low. And then on his
hat he's got three more logos. This guy right here,
this Denny McCarthy has ten logos on his hat and
(13:06):
on his shirt. That was my big takeaway from the
Valero Texas Open. My big takeaway from the Valero Texas
Open was OK, Shay, but he is a heck of
a player. Twenty two years old. He's going to be
(13:29):
a good one. Like when people say, Okay, who's the
best young player? I got a new best young player.
I'm saying he is. I like that kid's game, and
I like his demeanor. I like his attitude, got a
little problem with the shoulder, popped his shoulder out celebrating
in regulation, but cap that. Denny McCarthy made a huge
pot on eighteen. A bird last seven holes made a
(13:50):
huge pot Denny McCarthy on eighteen and Akshay caps him off.
That's pretty damn good right there. I mean, you got
to get any time you can put the Kappa on
somebody that is big time, like big time. McCarthy's was
a great putt, no doubt about it. But the Kapper
is a harder one, and he capped him off, and
(14:12):
that's that's impressive. Twenty two years old. Capped him off, celebrating,
pumping his arms. Shoulder pops up, and I saw, you know,
I thought, well, what this guy's reaching for his shoulder.
He's got it now he's injured. I mean, I'm like there,
I thought, this is where, you know, he's calling for
the physio in the middle of the eighteenth fairway after
on the playoff. And then I went back and I
(14:34):
looked at the replay and I saw it happen. I
saw it because because I've dislocated my shoulders before, and
I saw his shoulder sub blox and it wasn't like
a total dislocation. It came like halfway out and pop
back in. And that'll be a little one. It'll freak
out a little a little bit for sure, and two,
(14:55):
you know, it'll it'll definitely be uh, you know, painful
for a little lo little while. For sure. That's gonna
be a reoccurring problem with him. You know what I mean,
I know way too much about dislocated shoulders. Once you
do it one time, there's like one hundred percent chance
you're going to do it again. And he's young, and
he's he's really wiry, and it doesn't have a lot
(15:15):
holding that shoulder in. He's gonna have to get that
thing fixed sometimes. But that's not a big deal. But
he's got to tighten that thing up. That's uh, that's good.
That's gonna be an issue where he's gonna have to
get taped up. He's young. You know, he's gonna do
something stupid. He's gonna play pick a ball, he's gonna
go on a water slide, he's gonna he's gonna do something.
That thing's gonna pop right out. And that's who man,
I'm cringing thinking about that. But that's not a career
(15:37):
end or anything. He's gonna that kid's going to be good.
That kid is good. I took that away. That was
a takeaway for me. That kid is really good. Uh
the ox Shay Butteia really good. And then the Denny
McCarthy has more logos than I've ever seen on any
(15:57):
and any professional's number one logo and I've never seen
anything like it. Never never seen anything like it. That
was my takeaway. And by the way, he sodded it
in that he sotted it in the creek on the playoff.
All never see I can't remember. I mean, I've seen
guys hitting bad shots, bad t shots bad you know,
I mean missing putts. I never seen a guy lay
(16:21):
the sod over it and hit a chunk in the
water from like a hundred yard. That was like shocking. Now,
I mean, it's hard to rag on a guy too
much after he just shot. I mean when he shoot
sixty three and made seven birdies coming in in a row,
I mean that, But wow, that's just that's something you
don't see every day. You can watch a lot of golf,
(16:42):
you don't see that every day. You probably won't see
that at the Masters. Then I'm watching the LIV and
you know, I'm listening to all these commentators. I kind
of I was listening to more of the l IV
commentators had to say, I prefer those guys a little
bit better. But then Jerry Foltz starts talking about how
(17:05):
this is on the l I V broadcast. You know,
he see he goes into his deal about how whoever
wins that you know, Valero Texas Open is gonna you know,
if they haven't already qualified, and uh but Tea hadn't,
then you're gonna be in the Masters. And but you know,
no matter who wins here, you're not going to be
in the Masters, you know, you know, like he's crying
(17:28):
in his soup about about the whole And I'm for
having the best field you could possibly have. Clearly everybody's
listening to me knows this. I'm for the best field
you could possibly have in any of the majors, all
the majors. But but I mean, come on, there's no
I don't think they deserve it, and it will never happen.
(17:50):
There's no way that you're gonna they're gonna give automatic
exemptions to the Masters for winners of a forty eight
person tournament, and that ain't gonna happen. There's a lot
of things that could happen. There's a lot of things
that will happen, But I can tell you what won't happen.
They are not going to hand out an exemption for
winning a forty eight man tournament to get into the Masters. Now,
you may, you know, you may get in. If you
(18:12):
win a couple, you may get in. If you if
you finish X on the money list, you may. You know,
there's a lot of ways you could get in. And
eventually they're gonna let those guys in because they want
the best field they can have. But come on, come,
I mean, seriously, you're trying to convince me that everybody
who wins the tournament on the on the uh the
(18:33):
Live Golf Tour forty eight players. I mean, I'm a
big Live fan, but forty eight players in the field.
You being you know you're one of them. You're beating
forty seven guys, and you should get an exemption of
the Masters. There's no freaking way that's gonna happen. No
way that ain't gonna happen. So, but you know they
are leaving out some guys. I mean, that Taylor Goots
definitely deserves to be playing in the Masters. It's ridiculous.
(18:54):
You know, he's won three or four times in the
last year on l IV. I mean, it's gotta be
worth something, isn't it. Anyway, I'm watching that tournament and
it's going on the way, and that was exciting. All
you know, four or five guys tied for lead. Burmeister,
Sergio Louis Hatton, oh Man, that guy's a beauty, Tarohad,
(19:17):
Matthew Wolf. I mean, I've heard of all these guys
Moo's taysan weekend and week out because they only play
fourteen weeks on the LIV weekend and week out. Though
if you know they are those fourteen weeks, you got
a leaderboard, you've heard of you know some of these guys,
you know pretty much all of them. Yeah, you don't
(19:39):
know these guys on this PGA tour. It's like crazy.
Maybe we'll start to learn who they are. I don't know.
But anyway, Okay, so I'm watching that tournament and they
get on the eighteenth hole. I mean, they're all over
the place because the shotguns start, but just so happens
that the leaders are finishing on eighteen and Burmeister, who won,
(20:02):
you know, twice on the European Tour before he went
to l IV. I mean, this guy's this guy's a hacker,
a player. He hits it right. Eighteen is a tough hold. Dreil.
You know, it's an kind of golf course, you know,
Trump Derel. It's a great golf course. It's a ball
striker's course. I've been there many times. I watched Tiger
whin they're you know, on numerous occasions. I think he's
(20:24):
won there. I know he won there at least once
when I was coaching him, but I think he's won
there other times as well. But he's it's a great
golf course. But that eighteenth holl is tough water. Left
a lot of penalties, you know, penalty shots are hard
to avoid playing at Doreil. And he drives it right
(20:46):
in the trees, got to punch out and then you
know he ends up making a four footer for bogie.
You know, that's the best he could do. So now
Sergio makes a bomb on seventeen, you know, I mean
like a bomb. And you know Sergio's not the greatest putter.
I mean, I don't you know, but you don't have to.
You know, they're not playing three rounds. Eleven under is
(21:08):
playing off and Sergio hits a great drive on eighteen.
I mean, that's the hard shot to hit. But he can't.
He can't get it on there close enough. So now
he leaves himself a long leg putt. He's not a
good putter. And this is one of the things that
is underrated when I thinking back of the greatness of
(21:30):
Tiger Woods is Tiger's lag putting. And when you're a
great lag putter, it enables you to be more conservative
with your iron shots because you know you can lag
it up there close. And the example I always use
on on that kind of little theory I have is
(21:51):
when Tom Watson almost won the British Open, the Open
Championship at you know, whever Oldie was fifty year sixty
or whatever. He almost won, it was gonna be like
a historic thing. And he gets down there in eighteen
and he's in between clubs. He's got eight, nine and
if he gets the eight and maybe uh, you know,
(22:11):
knocks it over the green, that it's a possibility. So
you don't want to do that, so he takes out
he's right in between clubs. So he takes out the nine,
but the nine is gonna leave him like fifty sixty feet,
and from fifty sixty feet, he's gonna probably leave himself
of you know, four footer. That's probably what's gonna not
the greatest lag putter at that point in his career
(22:32):
and not really not a good short putter at that
point in his career, so he's probably gonna leave himself
with So now all of a sudden, there's a three
putt possibility, and Sergio is kind of the same way,
Like Sergio can't leave himself too far with his iron shot,
because if he does leave himself too far with his
iron shot, he's probably to leave himself a four or
(22:53):
five footer, and he's you know, he's gonna miss some
of those. I mean, that's just the matter. He has
a terrible lag putt, and he always got to do
his two putt to win, got it. It's a terrible
lag putt, and he missed in, doesn't even come close
on the next butt, doesn't even come close. I mean,
they're trying, the announcers, trying to tell me that he
(23:13):
thought it was gonna break to the water. I mean,
the put broke, right, I mean, come on, the pins
back left. You know where the pin's gonna be. They
know where the pin's gonna be before they t f
on the tournament. They play, you know, practice around Tuesday, Wednesday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, whatever,
pro am on Thursday. That he didn't go out there blind.
(23:35):
That's my point. He played some kind of practice around.
You know where the pin's going to be, and in
all likelihood you're gonna be short or you're gonna and
you're gonna be right. You're gonna be short and right.
That's where you're gonna be. You're gonna be short, right,
You're not gonna be long and left. You're gonna be
short and right. That's where you're gonna be on eighteen
and uh. And you you get up there and you know,
you know you you practice that putt and you know
(23:59):
what's it's gonna break. So so when the announcer says, oh,
you thought it was gonna break to the water, I mean,
you know which way the putt's gonna break. You practiced
that butt in the practice round. You may not know
exactly how much it's gonna break, but you don't you
don't think it's breaking left and it breaks right. I
have such a hard time listening to these guys. I mean,
it's just like I've got now. I'm just like, I
(24:20):
just let me it's let me watch. I didn't even
want to listen to these announcers. But anyway, Sergio three putts.
Then they play it again and uh, he hits the
you know, he puts it in the water on his
on his second shot, and you know, gives the guy
uh you know, and they not hit a good good
iron and you know, another one in there and then
(24:42):
he makes the pot, you know, but he makes a bogie.
What's my formula for golf? There are three things you
have to do. You have to eliminate penalty shots, two chips,
and three putts. And it's almost always the same. And
I promise you absolutely guaranteed at the Masters this week
(25:11):
it will be penalty shots and three putts that determine
the winner of the Masters. And what was it that
determined the winner at l I V It was penalty
shots and three putts ser Joe penalty shot three putts.
(25:33):
And on the PGA Tour, what was it that determined
the winner? Determined penalty shot when Denny McCarthy hits it
in the water on the playoffall it's the same thing
every time. So when you're when you're trying to improve
your golf game, those are the areas you look. You
focus in on penalty shots, two chips and three putts.
(25:55):
When you're watching the tournament, it'll be the same thing
every single time you watch. You watch this week, it'll
be absolutely guaranteed. All right, appreciate everybody listen. Remember my
Voodoo pain relief cream. If you got the aches and
pains that Oxy needs a little for his shoulder. There
the dislocated shoulder, that would be rubbed that Voodoo Pain
Relief cream on there and he'll be He'll be brand
