We've got a building that's moving in Manhattan and there
are evacuations going on in nearby buildings, so we're going
to get into that coming up in this half hour.
Also want to get into a standardized testing why it

may return to the University of California. There is a
call by a number of major newspapers to do that.
So a lot to get into there, But clearly the
lead story today has to do with Graham Platner. He
is a Democrat nominee running for Senate in Maine. Now
reflecting on his path forward in the race, he has
denied these new published allegations that he sexually assaulted a

former girlfriend. So with that, I want to go to
Juhi Doshi, who is a digital journalist covers politics in
Washington Dan for ABC News. Joey, thank you very much
for joining us. I just feel like today has been
one of these days where so many analysts, so many
onlookers are sitting around waiting saying, Okay, when is he
(01:14):
going to step aside?

Right? And this has amounted to a major shakeup coming
out of Maine and also in the middle of this
year's midterm race. And just to recap for your listeners,
Politico published a report Monday detailing and allegation from Jenny Rascal,
a former girlfriend of the main Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner,
where she alleges on the record that while she and
(01:37):
Platner were casually dating five years ago, he showed up
at her home and, in her words, showed up drunk
and forced her into having sex without her consent after
she repeatedly asked him to stop. ABC News has not
confirmed the contents of the story, but Platner has called
the allegation quote categorically false, but said that he's taking
the time to reflect on the best pass forwards. And
(01:59):
it's worth noting here that this isn't the campaign's first scandal.
The Democrat challenging incumbent Senator Susan Collins has previously faced
scrutiny over sexually explicit taxad to multiple women and at
tattoo with Nazi symbolism that he says he didn't know
the meaning of and has since covered up.

So these are some of the problems that he has
faced in the past. And you know, Judy, I just
I take a look at so many people in the
Democrat Party now defecting, their bailing on him, including Senator
You've got Senator Bernie Sanders. You've got the New York
City mayor Zorn Mamdani, and the California Congressman Rocanna, who
for a long time, you know, you were talking about
(02:39):
the Nazi tattoo. For the longest time, Rokanna stood by
his side even when those stories started to surface. So
it seems as though the Democrats are are running from
this candidate. How much longer can he survive?

Exactly like you mentioned, Rocanna campaigned with Platnir and stood
by him throughout preview its controversies, but of course after
political story came out, quickly urged him to drop out.
You also have Chuck Schumer and cursygilibrand a senator who
chairs the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee who's in charge of
(03:15):
electing Democrats to the Senate. They've said that if Platner
doesn't withdraw, the committee would not invest in the race.
And this is one of the most highly watched races
this season for the midterms, And so the clock is
ticking right. If Platner dropped withdraws by July thirteenth, May
Democrats can replace him, and the party ad have until
(03:37):
July twenty seventh to choose a replacement. So all eyes
are now, of course, waiting to see if Platner issues
an additional statement. He hasn't said anything since yesterday in
terms of his decision or whether or not he's going
to stay in the race.

Has there been any particular candidate who has been identified
by many of the analysts right now as a Democrat
who could replace Platner if Platner steps aside, or is
all of that still very much unknown and trying to
be figured out.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Exactly. I've been talking to sources in Maine democratic politics
who have voice concerned that, Look, we saw what happened
in twenty twenty four when Kamala Harris rapidly became the
Democratic nominee after Biden stepped aside, which caused a lot
of voters to feel sidelined as they felt like the
party had anointed a candidate, So right now I can
tell you there are a number of different folks who
(04:30):
are being thrown out as potential replacements. You have Troy Jackson,
a former candidate in the main and main Democratic tubernatorial primary,
and a progressive who's been floated as a candidate who
could appeal to Plattner's base. You know, Platner had won
his primary and a c insurgent campaign, an anti establishment campaign,
(04:52):
and Jackson has actually filed with the sec A form
to create an exploratory committee, becoming the first Democrat to
sort of start formally campaigning for the spot. You also
have ni av Shaw out there, who is confirmed that
he's considering a bid. He was running to be Mains
governor and led in the polls prior to the Democratic runoff.
(05:14):
So a variety of names being thrown out there. Shanna Bellows,
you know, Main's first female secretary of State and also
a candidate in the gubernatorial race who has said that
she is open to considering a Platiner with draws.

Okay, a number of players still in play. All right,

Have you seen what's going on in Manhattan. They've got
a building that's well, it's not collapsing, but it's they're
afraid it might. I'll give you the backdrop on all
of this. Right now. They have at least nine buildings
(06:23):
that have been evacuated. Three roads have been closed in
response to this midtown Manhattan high rise. They say it
could collapse. Their warning of a possible collapse. So this
tower is located at two thirty five East forty seconds,
so it's on the east side of Manhattan, and it
was showing signs of structural instability this morning, and according
(06:45):
to Mayor Zorn Mamdani, one of the nearby buildings evacuated
was a school with some four hundred children inside as
the Kennedy International School, located about a block away or so.
Also a hotel reportedly evacuated. Property listings identified two thirty
one East forty third Street. That's one of the places.
Mom Donnie has said that the New York Police Department
(07:08):
has blocked off traffic from fortieth to forty fifth Streets
between first and third Avenue. So they've got a building
that they're sort of retrofitting. They're turning it into condominiums
and other things that could be either sold or leased
into residential property. And apparently the floors between the twenty
first and twenty sixth floor are buckling slightly, so they
(07:32):
were called there this morning and they're trying to figure
out what's going on with this building in Manhattan. So
that's the latest done that. That story has been evolving
all day back to very quickly what's going on in
Maine with the US Senate race there and how Rocana,
the congressman from Silicon Valley here in California. The Democrat
(07:54):
could be paying a political price. Politico has an interesting
article on this today and they write, and I'll just
read just a few portions of the article they wrote
on this, Conna, arguably more than any other Democrat, provided
political cover for the renegade main Senate candidate Grand Platinners
who they're talking about. Of course, he stood by Platner
during a series of controversies and physically actually stood with
(08:17):
him on stage at a campaign rally in Maine one
day after The New York Times reported of Grand Platner's
behavior toward former girlfriends. So that was one of the
big first reports that came out in the New York Times.
Then there was this explosive report just yesterday that surfaced
from a former girlfriend who talked in great detail about
(08:39):
how she has alleged that he raped her at her home.
So Political goes on to write, and we're just talking
about a political price here that Kana may be paying.
They go on to write, Conna was quicker to break
with Platiner than other prominent Democrat supporters. But Conna's speed
did not spare him the backlash for being such a
(09:01):
steadfast supporter of Platner until this point, despite the Senate
candidate's tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol or old offensive online post.
Despite all of that, Kanna stood by this guy. So
two Democrat strategists are quite concerned about this. The first
one is a Julie Rajinski, who is a Democrat strategist
(09:21):
on CNN, and she said, after these new allegations surface
just yesterday, this is a direct quote Rokana, who I
think has done Lord's work on the Epstein files. Why
he believes those women but for some reason did not
believe enough of the previous women to withdraw his endorsement
way before today is puzzling to me. And then Political
(09:42):
wraps up their article by quoting another California Democrat strategist
who was given anonymity to speak frankly, according to Politico,
and this strategist says Rocana will always in forever be
the graand Platiner defender and went on to say, I
don't think damage control is going to fix the damage
he has created by getting himself in the middle of this.
(10:05):
There are a number of Democrats who thinks that Rocanna
has really done a number on his own political career
by standing by Graham Platinir for as long as he did.
Of course, he has withdrawn his support as a virtually
every prominent Democrat, as we just heard in the previous
report from Washington d C. I want to flip gears
here quickly to talk a little bit about standardized testing
(10:28):
in California. It's very much up in the air in
terms of what they're going to do in the UC system.
You know, it was six years a little bit more
than six years ago. Now the University of California system's
Board of Regents took a move. They stopped using standardized
test scores in undergraduate admissions. Now the New York Times
editorial board is urging the UC system to reverse course.
(10:50):
So they published this editorial yesterday and they said that
the UC system's decision was a terrible mistake that left
students left prepared for their college coursework. So they're urging,
you see, to reverse course. They're not the only ones,
so is the Wall Street Journal. Their OpEd page is
also making that recommendation. And Jason Riley is a Wall
(11:13):
Street Journal opinion columnist. He's also a senior fellow at
the Manhattan Institute, and he is among those who's calling
for standardized testing to return to colleges where they are
not currently being used.
Speaker 5 (11:26):
There's always been this tension on college campuses over this,
between professors who are teaching the kids and administrators on
campus who are more concern have more pr concerns making
sure the catalog looks right and there's enough diversity to
attract students and so forth, versus professors who know you're
not doing these kids any good by admitting them to
schools where they can't handle the work. They're more likely
(11:48):
to flunk out, they're more likely to switch to easier majors,
will have to dumb down requirements for both grading and graduation.
It serves no one's purpose, and so you see this backlash.
But it's been a long time coming. And of course
this was all done as we mentioned in the intro
and the name of equity. People who don't like the
outcomes on the test are blaming the tests, which is
(12:09):
like blaming the thermometer when you don't like the weather.
These tests are just measuring where a student is.

They're not.
Speaker 5 (12:17):
They cannot be held responsible for where the student is.
And what we really need to be doing is looking
at our K through twelve system, so that these kids
are prepared before they even sit down to take that
SAT test in the first place.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Before they got rid of standardized testing. They got together
a very big group of professors in the UC system
and asked them their recommendation, and after a long study
and a report, they said, no, let's not get rid
of standardized tests. But the administrators did so anyway. So
that's the ying and the yang here, the push and
the poll, and that's where there's going to be a
(12:49):
big meeting coming up in the next few days with
the UC Board of Regents and they're being urged to
reverse course so that they have standardized testing so that
children are kids, I should say, teenagers who are a
plot to get to school into those schools are more
prepared and more adequately prepared when we come back. I've
got an interesting clip I want to roll out for
you from a guy named Damon K. Jones. Don't know
(13:11):
if you've heard of him. He is a co publisher
of what's known as Black Westchester Magazine. He's been one
of these folks who always votes blue no matter what.
He's maybe changing his mind for a lot of reasons
because of the rise of socialists in the party. So
we're going to get into that coming up in our
next segment. I want to roll that out for you.

A lot of folks have been very supportive as I
have been sitting in for John. I saw that what
do you do about unruly kids and restaurants? What to do?
Apparently there is a restaurant owner in Foster City who
has come up with an idea, a plan, and it's
(14:44):
created a little bit of debate on social media. Strict
dining policy that finds parents if their children damage restaurant property.
If the kids misbehave, mom and dead have to pay.
So here here's how this works. There's this Chinese restaurant,
it's again located in Foster City, Chazoo, and they are
(15:06):
urging parents to keep their children seated well, reminding them
that the restaurant is not a playground. So they have
a memo that's been leaked online and it includes some
specific dates when parents of unruly children were fined, including
one a fee of three hundred and twenty seven dollars
after a child dropped and damaged a credit card reader
(15:26):
last April. That post has been viewed more than one
million times, hundreds of comments, mostly in favor of the policy.
Most folks are all for it finding the kids that
they misbehave. That's not a bad idea. That has to
be difficult when you're in a restaurant owner, what do you do?
All the other customers are unhappy? Right, Okay, this is
(15:50):
an interesting clip that I'm going to play for you.
It's colorful, it's a little spicy. We had to do
a little work on it to tone it down. But
that said, I don't know if you've ever heard of
this guy. His name is Damon K. Jones. And this,
to me seems like another sign that the Democrat Party
may be doing some serious damage to their brand by
(16:11):
allowing radical socialists to rise to prominence in their party. So,
Damon K. Jones is the co publisher of a magazine.
It's called Black Westchester Magazine. He's an African American man.
He is a devout Democrat. He is a voted Democrat
almost all the time. You may have heard that slogan
vote blue no matter who. He talks a little bit
(16:32):
about that slogan in this clip, and he says, now,
with the rise of radical socialists in the party, he's
not so sure that he's going to vote Democrat. Listen
to what he has to say.

The DSA did his slip. He came in under the Democrat,
under the Democrat Banna and Food and fooled everybody, and
we are so sick minded vote blue. No matter who votes,
(17:04):
we are still we're still gonna go out there and
vote for her. No guess our best interests right against
our best interests. I don't care about Magnan, I don't
care about Donald Trump. You just voted against your own interests.

You voted against your own interests.

Listen, if the Republicans respect veterans, then that's who's getting
my vote.

Right.

Did the Republicans respect whatever issue, education, family or whatever,
then that's who's gonna get my vote. Because right now,
New York didn't getting ready to take mother and father
of a.

Birth certific case I heard, so, you know, voting Democrat.
That's the rest they run, and that's the rest they're
running into. And they're realizing this that they're alienating the base,
and you could see this coming and Zorn Mamdani has
led the effort. I've got a clip later on. I
want to play from one of the leading investors in
(18:06):
the world who believes that there is one person who
is driving this whole DSA movement, and that is Zorn Mamdani,
which he says may be one of the most talented politicians.
He has ever seen, And when you think about it,
there's something to that. Mam Donnie is good. He is good,
there's no denying it. But maybe this is a one
(18:26):
trick pony. I don't know, but I have long contended
that this radical move by the Democrat Party they could
be overplaying their hand in a much bigger way than
they can even imagine. And we may find out a
lot more. I believe we will in the midterm elections.
By the way, I really do. I think November is
going to be very telling about the direction of the
(18:47):
party overall, because the speed with which this is happening
is really pretty remarkable. I got some interesting feedback from
someone listening on the iHeartRadio app to what we just
talked about. In terms of standardized testing in the UC
school system. Is it time to bring it back? And
are the young students who are being admitted into UC
schools and other colleges frankly across the country, are they
(19:08):
prepared enough for a four year college. You're throwing little.

Sheets to the wolves that had no idea what they're doing,
and then when they get out in the real world
and they can't get a job, then they blame the system.
Some people need to be plumbers. There's nothing wrong with that.
You know, some people need to be carpenters, very noble careers.
Not everyone can go to college. And you know, you
see it around me. I see it all the time,
a bunch of idiots out of college. And you know,
(19:36):
dumbing it down doesn't help.

The trades are so red hot right now. They are
just incredible how much interested they're getting. I mean, when
you think about it, I've read a number of stories
from industry analysts about the amount of demand for plumbers
and electricians right now is off the charts. And you
can go and get a degree right now in the trades.

Go get it educated in the trades, and there are
many companies who will actually pay for your education. Number one,
you graduate with no debt. And some of these jobs
are paying six figures. I mean, they're good paying jobs.
There's obviously a transformation that's going on. And then when
you look at here, we are at the very very
(20:20):
early stages the sunrise portion of AI, right, artificial intelligence,
and what is that doing to the workplace and the
number of jobs that are being eliminated. There was just
the story yesterday, did you see this about the number
of high tech job layoffs there have been since the
beginning of twenty twenty six is forty percent higher than
one year ago, and many are suggesting it has to

do with artificial intelligence. So that's the way the workplace
is changing.

be surprised if you walk outside and find a ticket
on your car for parking too close to a marked crosswalk. Yeah,
you got to stay away from those. Now. It's known
(21:18):
as daylighting. That's what they call it. So California is daylighting.
Law officially went into effect in January of twenty twenty five,
quite some time ago, but law enforcement agencies have been
abiding by a grace period to give motorists more time
to absorb the new law, aimed at protecting pedestrians. It
(21:41):
ends now, so parking enforcement departments all across southern California
have now declared they will be cracking down on violators. Okay,
so here's what you need to know the daylighting law.
It prohibits parking within twenty feet of the approach side
of a crosswalk. This is according to the other County
Sheriff's department website. So the approach side, this is this
(22:04):
section of a street that the driver sees just before
you reach the crosswalk. Okay, so then we got twenty
feet back from then. Now, if there's a curb extension
near the crosswalk, that clearance drops to fifteen feet. So
you're looking roughly at about the length of a four
door sedan that you have to stay back away from
(22:27):
crosswalks for the California daylighting law, which has been in
effect for more than a year, but now they're going
to start handing out tickets in southern California in this
so be prepared. You are now duly warned. There's some
new reporting on Senator Mitch McConnell that I want to
(22:48):
get to. And these are conflicting reports. I mean, one
rather dire and the other well not so much actually
rather promising. So we'll get to that because his health
has been in question for many weeks and what is
the state of his health? So we're going to get
into that in just a second. But I want to
(23:09):
get into fraud and corruption, and we're going to talk
about it not here, not just here in southern California,
but in Minnesota. This is where a lot of that
all started, right with Nick Shirley and those reports out
of Minnesota. And then when it happened in Minnesota, a
lot of folks are saying, oh, you wait, California, it's
coming your way. Sure enough, it's here. But the fraud
(23:30):
and corruption in Minnesota now appears to be actually much
bigger than has recently been reported. The Small Business Administration
Key administrator Kelly Loffler, who is in the Trump administration,
of course, has now told Fox News that the alleged
one billion dollars SMALI fraud ring is so massive in
Minnesota that the SBA is now expanding their investigation across
(23:55):
the entire state of Minnesota.
Speaker 6 (23:58):
So what we're talking about now is looking across the
entire state of Minnesota because it appears that this fraud
ring is being perpetrated across all types of government assistant
that has meant for families that are hungry, families that
need housing, young children that need education, and it's being exploited.
And look the fraud is well known because the Minnesota Legislature,
(24:22):
an independent oversight committee, called it out years ago. Governor
Waltz looked the other way because he was benefiting his constituency,
and now it's on the backs of hard working taxpayers
to pay it.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
Do you want to talk about fraud? California is saying
in Minnesota, hold my beer. I mean, so, at the
top of the hour, we're going to talk with a
reporter from the California Globe, Katie Grimes. She's going to
be joining us about federal agents and what they just
recently did here in southern California conducted an undercover raid
(24:55):
in Los Angeles. It was just before the weekend Thursday,
July third, and they were targeting SNAP food stamp benefits
fraud scheme at a store on skid Row. I'll just
give you the I'll just give you the big picture
storyline on Snap fraud. California is twelve and a half
(25:16):
billion dollars. SNAP program is the largest in the country. Okay,
and that's understandable. Now get this number, This one jumps
off the page for me. About eleven percent of that
program's payments are issued in error. Eleven percent that's more
than a billion dollars in error by mistake. Really, I
(25:39):
mean eleven percent. You know, if you invest your money
in the stock market and you're getting eleven percent, you're like,
that's not a bad year, that's pretty good. But eleven
percent issued in error. That's the broader picture. But when
Katie joins us, she's going to have more on this
undercover investigation, where it took place, what they were looking for,
(26:01):
and how big is the situation here in California, because
when that Minnesota story popped up initially, remember the Leering
Center and all of a sudden, I remember the day
that that happened. I remember saying to some people, oh
you wait, they're on their way to California. The level
of fraud and corruption in this state is off the hook.
(26:24):
It will Minnesota pales in comparison to what we've got
going on here. So we'll talk to Katie more about
that again. Coming up at the top of the hour.
I want to get into Mitch McConnell right now. There's
been a lot of questions about Senator Mitch McConnell. He's
the Republican from Kentucky. He has not been in good
health for quite some time. I think it was about
(26:44):
a year or two ago. He was doing news conferences
where he was just getting lost. I mean it was
very sad and his eyes would glaze over, and he
clearly was not cognitive at that point point to the
point that he needed to be to conduct news conference.
(27:05):
So now there's a new report that Senator Mitch McConnell
has actually been talking to people on the phone and
talking about some substantive issues. So this report Senator Mitch
McConnell indicates that he's alert taking phone calls on a
number of topics. And Scott Jones or Scott Jennings I
should say, he's with CNN, right, And I'm sure you're
(27:26):
familiar with him. He once worked in the office of
Senator Mitch McConnell, so he knows him quite well. And
he posted something online today quote I spoke to my
old friend Mitch McConnell this morning, the senior senator from Kentucky.
He's still recovering in the hospital. We talked for just
shy of twenty minutes about Iran, Ukraine, the unfolding situation
(27:47):
in Maine, my visit to the Teddy Roosevelt Presidential Library,
even a little bit of Senate history. Quote. I told
him we want him back at work as soon as possible.
And then there was a spokesperson for the Senate Majority leader,
John Thune said that the leader has spoken with McConnell
on Monday over some pretty substantial issues as well. So
(28:07):
the reason I bring these up is these reports are
in contradiction to the reporting that's been done by conservative
activist Laura Lumer and a journalist named Desiree Townsend, and
both of them claimed on Monday, just yesterday, at McConnell
had been declared brain dead. They did not provide any
specific sources. So you have two conflicting reports on Senator
(28:28):
Mitch McConnell. But the latest reporting as of today is
that he is taking phone calls and talking about some
substantive issues. So we're going to take a little bit
of a break, but when we come back, we're going
to be talking to Katie Grimes of the California Globe
more about this undercover snap investigation that took place on
skid row in Los Angeles, what they were looking for

and how pervasive this problem is. Just how badly are
we as taxpayers getting ripped off here? In the state
of California, and what's the focus. How big a role
is us the Stamp program alone playing in all of

We've got a building that's moving in Manhattan and there
are evacuations going on in nearby buildings, so we're going
to get into that coming up in this half hour.
Also want to get into a standardized testing why it

may return to the University of California. There is a
call by a number of major newspapers to do that.
So a lot to get into there, But clearly the
lead story today has to do with Graham Platner. He
is a Democrat nominee running for Senate in Maine. Now
reflecting on his path forward in the race, he has
denied these new published allegations that he sexually assaulted a
(00:52):
former girlfriend. So with that, I want to go to
Juhi Doshi, who is a digital journalist covers politics in
Washington Dan for ABC News. Joey, thank you very much
for joining us. I just feel like today has been
one of these days where so many analysts, so many
onlookers are sitting around waiting saying, Okay, when is he
(01:14):
going to step aside?

Right? And this has amounted to a major shakeup coming
out of Maine and also in the middle of this
year's midterm race. And just to recap for your listeners,
Politico published a report Monday detailing and allegation from Jenny Rascal,
a former girlfriend of the main Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner,
where she alleges on the record that while she and
(01:37):
Platner were casually dating five years ago, he showed up
at her home and, in her words, showed up drunk
and forced her into having sex without her consent after
she repeatedly asked him to stop. ABC News has not
confirmed the contents of the story, but Platner has called
the allegation quote categorically false, but said that he's taking
the time to reflect on the best pass forwards. And
(01:59):
it's worth noting here that this isn't the campaign's first scandal.
The Democrat challenging incumbent Senator Susan Collins has previously faced
scrutiny over sexually explicit taxad to multiple women and at
tattoo with Nazi symbolism that he says he didn't know
the meaning of and has since covered up.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
So these are some of the problems that he has
faced in the past. And you know, Judy, I just
I take a look at so many people in the
Democrat Party now defecting, their bailing on him, including Senator
You've got Senator Bernie Sanders. You've got the New York
City mayor Zorn Mamdani, and the California Congressman Rocanna, who
for a long time, you know, you were talking about
(02:39):
the Nazi tattoo. For the longest time, Rokanna stood by
his side even when those stories started to surface. So
it seems as though the Democrats are are running from
this candidate. How much longer can he survive?
Speaker 3 (02:55):
Exactly like you mentioned, Rocanna campaigned with Platnir and stood
by him throughout preview its controversies, but of course after
political story came out, quickly urged him to drop out.
You also have Chuck Schumer and cursygilibrand a senator who
chairs the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee who's in charge of
(03:15):
electing Democrats to the Senate. They've said that if Platner
doesn't withdraw, the committee would not invest in the race.
And this is one of the most highly watched races
this season for the midterms, And so the clock is
ticking right. If Platner dropped withdraws by July thirteenth, May
Democrats can replace him, and the party ad have until
(03:37):
July twenty seventh to choose a replacement. So all eyes
are now, of course, waiting to see if Platner issues
an additional statement. He hasn't said anything since yesterday in
terms of his decision or whether or not he's going
to stay in the race.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
Has there been any particular candidate who has been identified
by many of the analysts right now as a Democrat
who could replace Platner if Platner steps aside, or is
all of that still very much unknown and trying to
be figured out.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Exactly. I've been talking to sources in Maine democratic politics
who have voice concerned that, Look, we saw what happened
in twenty twenty four when Kamala Harris rapidly became the
Democratic nominee after Biden stepped aside, which caused a lot
of voters to feel sidelined as they felt like the
party had anointed a candidate, So right now I can
tell you there are a number of different folks who
(04:30):
are being thrown out as potential replacements. You have Troy Jackson,
a former candidate in the main and main Democratic tubernatorial primary,
and a progressive who's been floated as a candidate who
could appeal to Plattner's base. You know, Platner had won
his primary and a c insurgent campaign, an anti establishment campaign,
(04:52):
and Jackson has actually filed with the sec A form
to create an exploratory committee, becoming the first Democrat to
sort of start formally campaigning for the spot. You also
have ni av Shaw out there, who is confirmed that
he's considering a bid. He was running to be Mains
governor and led in the polls prior to the Democratic runoff.
(05:14):
So a variety of names being thrown out there. Shanna Bellows,
you know, Main's first female secretary of State and also
a candidate in the gubernatorial race who has said that
she is open to considering a Platiner with draws.

Okay, a number of players still in play. All right,

terms of the very latest, let's get some of the
latest news elsewhere in the news with Deborah Mark in

Have you seen what's going on in Manhattan. They've got
a building that's well, it's not collapsing, but it's they're
afraid it might. I'll give you the backdrop on all
of this. Right now. They have at least nine buildings
(06:23):
that have been evacuated. Three roads have been closed in
response to this midtown Manhattan high rise. They say it
could collapse. Their warning of a possible collapse. So this
tower is located at two thirty five East forty seconds,
so it's on the east side of Manhattan, and it
was showing signs of structural instability this morning, and according
(06:45):
to Mayor Zorn Mamdani, one of the nearby buildings evacuated
was a school with some four hundred children inside as
the Kennedy International School, located about a block away or so.
Also a hotel reportedly evacuated. Property listings identified two thirty
one East forty third Street. That's one of the places.
Mom Donnie has said that the New York Police Department
(07:08):
has blocked off traffic from fortieth to forty fifth Streets
between first and third Avenue. So they've got a building
that they're sort of retrofitting. They're turning it into condominiums
and other things that could be either sold or leased
into residential property. And apparently the floors between the twenty
first and twenty sixth floor are buckling slightly, so they
(07:32):
were called there this morning and they're trying to figure
out what's going on with this building in Manhattan. So
that's the latest done that. That story has been evolving
all day back to very quickly what's going on in
Maine with the US Senate race there and how Rocana,
the congressman from Silicon Valley here in California. The Democrat
(07:54):
could be paying a political price. Politico has an interesting
article on this today and they write, and I'll just
read just a few portions of the article they wrote
on this, Conna, arguably more than any other Democrat, provided
political cover for the renegade main Senate candidate Grand Platinners
who they're talking about. Of course, he stood by Platner
during a series of controversies and physically actually stood with
(08:17):
him on stage at a campaign rally in Maine one
day after The New York Times reported of Grand Platner's
behavior toward former girlfriends. So that was one of the
big first reports that came out in the New York Times.
Then there was this explosive report just yesterday that surfaced
from a former girlfriend who talked in great detail about
(08:39):
how she has alleged that he raped her at her home.
So Political goes on to write, and we're just talking
about a political price here that Kana may be paying.
They go on to write, Conna was quicker to break
with Platiner than other prominent Democrat supporters. But Conna's speed
did not spare him the backlash for being such a
(09:01):
steadfast supporter of Platner until this point, despite the Senate
candidate's tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol or old offensive online post.
Despite all of that, Kanna stood by this guy. So
two Democrat strategists are quite concerned about this. The first
one is a Julie Rajinski, who is a Democrat strategist
(09:21):
on CNN, and she said, after these new allegations surface
just yesterday, this is a direct quote Rokana, who I
think has done Lord's work on the Epstein files. Why
he believes those women but for some reason did not
believe enough of the previous women to withdraw his endorsement
way before today is puzzling to me. And then Political
(09:42):
wraps up their article by quoting another California Democrat strategist
who was given anonymity to speak frankly, according to Politico,
and this strategist says Rocana will always in forever be
the graand Platiner defender and went on to say, I
don't think damage control is going to fix the damage
he has created by getting himself in the middle of this.
(10:05):
There are a number of Democrats who thinks that Rocanna
has really done a number on his own political career
by standing by Graham Platinir for as long as he did.
Of course, he has withdrawn his support as a virtually
every prominent Democrat, as we just heard in the previous
report from Washington d C. I want to flip gears
here quickly to talk a little bit about standardized testing
(10:28):
in California. It's very much up in the air in
terms of what they're going to do in the UC system.
You know, it was six years a little bit more
than six years ago. Now the University of California system's
Board of Regents took a move. They stopped using standardized
test scores in undergraduate admissions. Now the New York Times
editorial board is urging the UC system to reverse course.
(10:50):
So they published this editorial yesterday and they said that
the UC system's decision was a terrible mistake that left
students left prepared for their college coursework. So they're urging,
you see, to reverse course. They're not the only ones,
so is the Wall Street Journal. Their OpEd page is
also making that recommendation. And Jason Riley is a Wall
(11:13):
Street Journal opinion columnist. He's also a senior fellow at
the Manhattan Institute, and he is among those who's calling
for standardized testing to return to colleges where they are
not currently being used.
Speaker 5 (11:26):
There's always been this tension on college campuses over this,
between professors who are teaching the kids and administrators on
campus who are more concern have more pr concerns making
sure the catalog looks right and there's enough diversity to
attract students and so forth, versus professors who know you're
not doing these kids any good by admitting them to
schools where they can't handle the work. They're more likely
(11:48):
to flunk out, they're more likely to switch to easier majors,
will have to dumb down requirements for both grading and graduation.
It serves no one's purpose, and so you see this backlash.
But it's been a long time coming. And of course
this was all done as we mentioned in the intro
and the name of equity. People who don't like the
outcomes on the test are blaming the tests, which is
(12:09):
like blaming the thermometer when you don't like the weather.
These tests are just measuring where a student is.

They're not.
Speaker 5 (12:17):
They cannot be held responsible for where the student is.
And what we really need to be doing is looking
at our K through twelve system, so that these kids
are prepared before they even sit down to take that
SAT test in the first place.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Before they got rid of standardized testing. They got together
a very big group of professors in the UC system
and asked them their recommendation, and after a long study
and a report, they said, no, let's not get rid
of standardized tests. But the administrators did so anyway. So
that's the ying and the yang here, the push and
the poll, and that's where there's going to be a
(12:49):
big meeting coming up in the next few days with
the UC Board of Regents and they're being urged to
reverse course so that they have standardized testing so that
children are kids, I should say, teenagers who are a
plot to get to school into those schools are more
prepared and more adequately prepared when we come back. I've
got an interesting clip I want to roll out for
you from a guy named Damon K. Jones. Don't know
(13:11):
if you've heard of him. He is a co publisher
of what's known as Black Westchester Magazine. He's been one
of these folks who always votes blue no matter what.
He's maybe changing his mind for a lot of reasons
because of the rise of socialists in the party. So
we're going to get into that coming up in our
next segment. I want to roll that out for you.

A lot of folks have been very supportive as I
have been sitting in for John. I saw that what
do you do about unruly kids and restaurants? What to do?
Apparently there is a restaurant owner in Foster City who
has come up with an idea, a plan, and it's
(14:44):
created a little bit of debate on social media. Strict
dining policy that finds parents if their children damage restaurant property.
If the kids misbehave, mom and dead have to pay.
So here here's how this works. There's this Chinese restaurant,
it's again located in Foster City, Chazoo, and they are
(15:06):
urging parents to keep their children seated well, reminding them
that the restaurant is not a playground. So they have
a memo that's been leaked online and it includes some
specific dates when parents of unruly children were fined, including
one a fee of three hundred and twenty seven dollars
after a child dropped and damaged a credit card reader
(15:26):
last April. That post has been viewed more than one
million times, hundreds of comments, mostly in favor of the policy.
Most folks are all for it finding the kids that
they misbehave. That's not a bad idea. That has to
be difficult when you're in a restaurant owner, what do you do?
All the other customers are unhappy? Right, Okay, this is
(15:50):
an interesting clip that I'm going to play for you.
It's colorful, it's a little spicy. We had to do
a little work on it to tone it down. But
that said, I don't know if you've ever heard of
this guy. His name is Damon K. Jones. And this,
to me seems like another sign that the Democrat Party
may be doing some serious damage to their brand by
(16:11):
allowing radical socialists to rise to prominence in their party. So,
Damon K. Jones is the co publisher of a magazine.
It's called Black Westchester Magazine. He's an African American man.
He is a devout Democrat. He is a voted Democrat
almost all the time. You may have heard that slogan
vote blue no matter who. He talks a little bit
(16:32):
about that slogan in this clip, and he says, now,
with the rise of radical socialists in the party, he's
not so sure that he's going to vote Democrat. Listen
to what he has to say.

The DSA did his slip. He came in under the Democrat,
under the Democrat Banna and Food and fooled everybody, and
we are so sick minded vote blue. No matter who votes,
(17:04):
we are still we're still gonna go out there and
vote for her. No guess our best interests right against
our best interests. I don't care about Magnan, I don't
care about Donald Trump. You just voted against your own interests.

You voted against your own interests.

Listen, if the Republicans respect veterans, then that's who's getting
my vote.

Right.

Did the Republicans respect whatever issue, education, family or whatever,
then that's who's gonna get my vote. Because right now,
New York didn't getting ready to take mother and father
of a.
Speaker 1 (17:45):
Birth certific case I heard, so, you know, voting Democrat.
That's the rest they run, and that's the rest they're
running into. And they're realizing this that they're alienating the base,
and you could see this coming and Zorn Mamdani has
led the effort. I've got a clip later on. I
want to play from one of the leading investors in
(18:06):
the world who believes that there is one person who
is driving this whole DSA movement, and that is Zorn Mamdani,
which he says may be one of the most talented politicians.
He has ever seen, And when you think about it,
there's something to that. Mam Donnie is good. He is good,
there's no denying it. But maybe this is a one
(18:26):
trick pony. I don't know, but I have long contended
that this radical move by the Democrat Party they could
be overplaying their hand in a much bigger way than
they can even imagine. And we may find out a
lot more. I believe we will in the midterm elections.
By the way, I really do. I think November is
going to be very telling about the direction of the
(18:47):
party overall, because the speed with which this is happening
is really pretty remarkable. I got some interesting feedback from
someone listening on the iHeartRadio app to what we just
talked about. In terms of standardized testing in the UC
school system. Is it time to bring it back? And
are the young students who are being admitted into UC
schools and other colleges frankly across the country, are they
(19:08):
prepared enough for a four year college. You're throwing little.
Speaker 8 (19:13):
Sheets to the wolves that had no idea what they're doing,
and then when they get out in the real world
and they can't get a job, then they blame the system.
Some people need to be plumbers. There's nothing wrong with that.
You know, some people need to be carpenters, very noble careers.
Not everyone can go to college. And you know, you
see it around me. I see it all the time,
a bunch of idiots out of college. And you know,
(19:36):
dumbing it down doesn't help.
Speaker 1 (19:38):
The trades are so red hot right now. They are
just incredible how much interested they're getting. I mean, when
you think about it, I've read a number of stories
from industry analysts about the amount of demand for plumbers
and electricians right now is off the charts. And you
can go and get a degree right now in the trades.
(19:59):
Go get it educated in the trades, and there are
many companies who will actually pay for your education. Number one,
you graduate with no debt. And some of these jobs
are paying six figures. I mean, they're good paying jobs.
There's obviously a transformation that's going on. And then when
you look at here, we are at the very very
(20:20):
early stages the sunrise portion of AI, right, artificial intelligence,
and what is that doing to the workplace and the
number of jobs that are being eliminated. There was just
the story yesterday, did you see this about the number
of high tech job layoffs there have been since the
beginning of twenty twenty six is forty percent higher than
one year ago, and many are suggesting it has to
(20:43):
do with artificial intelligence. So that's the way the workplace
is changing.

be surprised if you walk outside and find a ticket
on your car for parking too close to a marked crosswalk. Yeah,
you got to stay away from those. Now. It's known
(21:18):
as daylighting. That's what they call it. So California is daylighting.
Law officially went into effect in January of twenty twenty five,
quite some time ago, but law enforcement agencies have been
abiding by a grace period to give motorists more time
to absorb the new law, aimed at protecting pedestrians. It
(21:41):
ends now, so parking enforcement departments all across southern California
have now declared they will be cracking down on violators. Okay,
so here's what you need to know the daylighting law.
It prohibits parking within twenty feet of the approach side
of a crosswalk. This is according to the other County
Sheriff's department website. So the approach side, this is this
(22:04):
section of a street that the driver sees just before
you reach the crosswalk. Okay, so then we got twenty
feet back from then. Now, if there's a curb extension
near the crosswalk, that clearance drops to fifteen feet. So
you're looking roughly at about the length of a four
door sedan that you have to stay back away from
(22:27):
crosswalks for the California daylighting law, which has been in
effect for more than a year, but now they're going
to start handing out tickets in southern California in this
so be prepared. You are now duly warned. There's some
new reporting on Senator Mitch McConnell that I want to
(22:48):
get to. And these are conflicting reports. I mean, one
rather dire and the other well not so much actually
rather promising. So we'll get to that because his health
has been in question for many weeks and what is
the state of his health? So we're going to get
into that in just a second. But I want to
(23:09):
get into fraud and corruption, and we're going to talk
about it not here, not just here in southern California,
but in Minnesota. This is where a lot of that
all started, right with Nick Shirley and those reports out
of Minnesota. And then when it happened in Minnesota, a
lot of folks are saying, oh, you wait, California, it's
coming your way. Sure enough, it's here. But the fraud
(23:30):
and corruption in Minnesota now appears to be actually much
bigger than has recently been reported. The Small Business Administration
Key administrator Kelly Loffler, who is in the Trump administration,
of course, has now told Fox News that the alleged
one billion dollars SMALI fraud ring is so massive in
Minnesota that the SBA is now expanding their investigation across
(23:55):
the entire state of Minnesota.
Speaker 6 (23:58):
So what we're talking about now is looking across the
entire state of Minnesota because it appears that this fraud
ring is being perpetrated across all types of government assistant
that has meant for families that are hungry, families that
need housing, young children that need education, and it's being exploited.
And look the fraud is well known because the Minnesota Legislature,
(24:22):
an independent oversight committee, called it out years ago. Governor
Waltz looked the other way because he was benefiting his constituency,
and now it's on the backs of hard working taxpayers
to pay it.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
Do you want to talk about fraud? California is saying
in Minnesota, hold my beer. I mean, so, at the
top of the hour, we're going to talk with a
reporter from the California Globe, Katie Grimes. She's going to
be joining us about federal agents and what they just
recently did here in southern California conducted an undercover raid
(24:55):
in Los Angeles. It was just before the weekend Thursday,
July third, and they were targeting SNAP food stamp benefits
fraud scheme at a store on skid Row. I'll just
give you the I'll just give you the big picture
storyline on Snap fraud. California is twelve and a half
(25:16):
billion dollars. SNAP program is the largest in the country. Okay,
and that's understandable. Now get this number, This one jumps
off the page for me. About eleven percent of that
program's payments are issued in error. Eleven percent that's more
than a billion dollars in error by mistake. Really, I
(25:39):
mean eleven percent. You know, if you invest your money
in the stock market and you're getting eleven percent, you're like,
that's not a bad year, that's pretty good. But eleven
percent issued in error. That's the broader picture. But when
Katie joins us, she's going to have more on this
undercover investigation, where it took place, what they were looking for,
(26:01):
and how big is the situation here in California, because
when that Minnesota story popped up initially, remember the Leering
Center and all of a sudden, I remember the day
that that happened. I remember saying to some people, oh
you wait, they're on their way to California. The level
of fraud and corruption in this state is off the hook.
(26:24):
It will Minnesota pales in comparison to what we've got
going on here. So we'll talk to Katie more about
that again. Coming up at the top of the hour.
I want to get into Mitch McConnell right now. There's
been a lot of questions about Senator Mitch McConnell. He's
the Republican from Kentucky. He has not been in good
health for quite some time. I think it was about
(26:44):
a year or two ago. He was doing news conferences
where he was just getting lost. I mean it was
very sad and his eyes would glaze over, and he
clearly was not cognitive at that point point to the
point that he needed to be to conduct news conference.
(27:05):
So now there's a new report that Senator Mitch McConnell
has actually been talking to people on the phone and
talking about some substantive issues. So this report Senator Mitch
McConnell indicates that he's alert taking phone calls on a
number of topics. And Scott Jones or Scott Jennings I
should say, he's with CNN, right, And I'm sure you're
(27:26):
familiar with him. He once worked in the office of
Senator Mitch McConnell, so he knows him quite well. And
he posted something online today quote I spoke to my
old friend Mitch McConnell this morning, the senior senator from Kentucky.
He's still recovering in the hospital. We talked for just
shy of twenty minutes about Iran, Ukraine, the unfolding situation
(27:47):
in Maine, my visit to the Teddy Roosevelt Presidential Library,
even a little bit of Senate history. Quote. I told
him we want him back at work as soon as possible.
And then there was a spokesperson for the Senate Majority leader,
John Thune said that the leader has spoken with McConnell
on Monday over some pretty substantial issues as well. So
(28:07):
the reason I bring these up is these reports are
in contradiction to the reporting that's been done by conservative
activist Laura Lumer and a journalist named Desiree Townsend, and
both of them claimed on Monday, just yesterday, at McConnell
had been declared brain dead. They did not provide any
specific sources. So you have two conflicting reports on Senator
(28:28):
Mitch McConnell. But the latest reporting as of today is
that he is taking phone calls and talking about some
substantive issues. So we're going to take a little bit
of a break, but when we come back, we're going
to be talking to Katie Grimes of the California Globe
more about this undercover snap investigation that took place on
skid row in Los Angeles, what they were looking for
(28:51):
and how pervasive this problem is. Just how badly are
we as taxpayers getting ripped off here? In the state
of California, and what's the focus. How big a role
is us the Stamp program alone playing in all of
