Speaker 1 (00:01):

you can be on the show and ask me your
questions and we can have a chat. And I'm just
so so so excited to connect with you guys. And
we have our very first episode today with Caroline Boisel.

(00:32):
She is newly married. She's got some questions about how
to keep that marriage fresh and alive, and I'm so excited,
so let's just jump right into it. Thank you for
being our first listener guest.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
I'm so excited. I can't believe it.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
I heard you've been listening since like the gen days,
way back from the very beginning.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
I mean, I was a senior in high school, but
I know. I'm sorry.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Oh no, I feel old.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
I'm sorry. No, It's great.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
I love it. I'm so excited. I'm so excited to
have you on, and I'm so excited that you're kicking
off this because as an OG listener, you've been along
for the ride. So thank you so much. Okay, so
what do you want to dive in today's your What's
your question from a very non uh person that has
I don't have any therapeutic but I've got some good advice.

Speaker 4 (01:22):
I've been in therapy, So like I that's my jam.
I don't know if it's a question, Like I guess
it's a question. So I'm newly married. We've been married
for since February, so four months, and like he rocks.
But I feel like we live in this era of
like anti marriage, Like people are just so hyper independent

(01:43):
and like they'll.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Just be like, oh well, if he's not doing this
then and the other then leave him like girl by
like whatever. And I'm like, no, that's not accurate. My
question truly is just.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
Like I know I'm young, but I'm not like how
old are you?

Speaker 4 (02:01):
I'm not like a baby, but I know I'm young
in the scheme of life, and like how I keep
the outside noise out and just like.

Speaker 3 (02:11):
I don't know, I'm like flubbering.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
My perfect example was like the other day, wait, minor disagreement,
that happens, It's life.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
Yep.

Speaker 4 (02:18):
Ironically, I was cleaning up I had like a like
a time box made for all of our wedding things,
and so I open it up and I see our
letters that we wrote to each other on our wedding day,
and so I read them and I'm crying.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
I'm like sobbing, and I was like, how do we
always go back to be like these people?

Speaker 4 (02:38):
Like?

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Which is just so special?

Speaker 4 (02:40):
And I'm realistic enough to know that that's not like
going to always happen. But my question to you is
just I feel like, how do you stay so in
tuned on making sure that you're not just like best
friends but you're also married Because it's easy, I feel
like to become.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Just friends, it's easy to become roommates, it's easy to
be I mean, all the things.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
And we don't kid yet.

Speaker 4 (02:59):
So I'm like, Okay, I really want to dive deep
into our marriage to make sure that it's.

Speaker 3 (03:03):
Like strong before we add tiny humans.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Yeah. No, for sure, it's a great because how long
you've been married for exactly like four months? Four months?
Yeah for sure. Well, I think there's still there's this
after the wedding, honeymoon, Yeah, feelings, there's this, Well this
is it kind of like.

Speaker 4 (03:23):
Yeah, you lose that bubble and like now everybody else
in our life is getting married, so it's fun because
we're in it. But I'm like Okay, we're in it right,
We're doing the thing that we've talked about wanting.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
To do right. I will say a couple of things
to that. So, there's the people that you surround yourself
with is really important. And I hear you say that
they're getting some of them are getting married. That's great.
But a lot of the times the people are that
are just like, oh well then just leave them are
probably going to be the single people right that also
like want their best friend back to go be single

(03:53):
with or to be miserable with. Again. Do you know
what I'm saying too, Because sometimes like misery loves company, yes, so,
And I will say it's when someone, for example, I
have a friend that will only tell me the negative
things about their partner. Yeah, And it's like eventually I'm
going to say, Okay, I know, well yeah, because I'm

(04:14):
like you, you're only telling the negative. So I like,
whenever I have I don't speak truly to my girlfriends
about any issues that I'm having because I mean little
things here and there. But I feel like it's one
of those things where I did that in my past
and it kind of bit me in the ass too,

(04:36):
you know what I mean? Because they did. They don't
need to know all that information or the little things
they need to know. I think when and they see
it too, they see the moments that he comes in
and does sweet things or is kind and to always
be harping the negative is only going to set your
relationship up or that negative feeling too, you know. So

(04:58):
I think just like pouring, like, yes, of course it's
fun at times, like I'll text christ and then be like,
oh my god, this is so annoying, you know, And
that's like little things like you can just go to
a friend and relate to that You're not going to
have a big issue with your husband about you just
have to vent it, you know what I mean. Yeah,
So things like that I think is fun, but when
you're constantly involving and not saying you are. But I'm

(05:19):
just saying like in the future, like I wouldn't involve
your friends too much into marital issues unless it's something
like I just found out he was cheating or I
have a suspicion or something like if you need someone
to talk to, But I would say, go to your
therapist and then go to your husband, and the best
thing that and I know since you've listened. I have
talked a bunch about with Alan and I. The best

(05:41):
thing we've done is our check ins because when you
do have kids, you're just going to be There's a
lot of passing just each other, and it's just a
lot of mind reading and well, he should know that
I need this and I should. He thinks that I
know that what he might It's like I don't. I
don't know what his day is going to look like
or consume of or his feeling. Yeah, And so we

(06:03):
having every Sunday we do a check in and it
has been so beneficial to our relationship because I don't
have to guess, I don't have to question. He knows
what I need like that week or what I'm feeling.
And if there's a you know something you could even
say to your husband in the check in about when
you go through the feelings part of it, you could
just be like, I don't know, I feel like we

(06:26):
need a date night to just have that spark again
like on our wedding night, because that's something that you
need to just feel alive in that moment.

Speaker 4 (06:33):
Yeah, yeah, I love that because and I am an
overshare maybe to a fault.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Up same, Hey girl, I and my husband is.

Speaker 4 (06:44):
Like the quietest like he I know him internally, but
like the world you would need him and.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
Be like, I don't think that guy likes me, and
so trying.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
To like pull it out and be like, hey, it's
not the negative connotation of therapy. It's me being like,
what's your soul? How are you feeling? Tell me your heart?
Like are you having that day?

Speaker 3 (07:05):
What's going on?

Speaker 4 (07:06):
And then he'll be like, yeah, I'm overwhelmed, and I'm like, okay,
you're right, but I just.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
Want to know, right, yeah, no, for sure, Well listen
to you. How do I say this? My Scotsman husband
didn't grow up knowing how to share emotions. I just
think especially I don't know if it's that his I
don't know if it's a where he's from or yeah,
but or or And I do think some men have

(07:32):
a hard time sharing their feelings. And at first the
check ins were so awkward for him. Now he's like
I feel like he's way lak no yeah, all right,
but no, it's so good because and we were listening
to this other podcast too, where this guy was having
a tough time sharing feelings and he was just like
he even named it. He's like the corny suit of vulnerability. Yeah,

(07:53):
that's really what it is. And guys feel really corny
being or in saying a feeling that they have. Guys
aren't technically supposed to have feelings. You're supposed to not cry,
not do this, right, So I think it's over time,
and if you do it once a week, it's gonna
be like he'll get more comfortable feeling that too.

Speaker 4 (08:13):
Yeah. Yeah, And I mean I watched my parents have
been married for forty three years, and so I've watched
conflict like we always joke where I'm like, fle have
an argument in my head, I'll see you at dinner,
and in his head his parents are divorced.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
So he's like, this is nice of the world. I'm like,
I'm gonna go make dinner. You're driving nuts. I love
you so much, and I'll bear it back.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
Yeah. Well that's the best thing too, Like that's amazing,
that's so good. Like that's because most people don't know
to to name it and then say, but I'll be back,
like I'm not leaving you, and it just depends what
like his wounds are and the whole thing. But I
will say this and this is something that's like really
rubbed me the wrong way is And I think it's great,
but I also think it sets people up to question

(08:54):
their marriage when there's when people say, oh, we never fight.
Not true, you know, because then it makes someone else go, oh, god,
is our relationship messed up because we're not fighting. So
I would just not compare when you see other people's relationships, yeah,
you know, because I've gone like, well, god, they've never
had an argument, like and you start to just go,

(09:15):
well we have you know, yeah, and then you go,
well is that not normal?

Speaker 4 (09:19):
Then?

Speaker 2 (09:20):
And then what's normal? And so the second you start
to compare yourself to a different relationship, like, that's where
it's going to start, you know, putting little pegs on yours.
And that's not what you want.

Speaker 3 (09:31):
I guess, which I know.

Speaker 4 (09:32):
I don't have a short mont my one like big
question now that I'm like not nervous, but so, like
I said, my parents have been married, my husband's parents
have been divorced. Marrying someone who has divorced it's a
different ball game. Yeah, And I think that there's like
not I don't want to say childhood wounds, but essentially

(09:52):
childhood Winds. He has like the most loving parents and
they did a fabulous job with him, But like, how
do I best love some Like, oh, words are going
to be hard for me right now. It's like it's
a big world for a kid who when life gets
hard he revolves back to that eight year old self
of that moment, And how do I console that eight

(10:17):
year old as a twenty eight year old man?

Speaker 2 (10:32):
Can he go to that place? Because that's the thing
that I would say, what does that eight year old need?
Like I know, yeah, twelve year old Alan needs when
he's in his thing, he knows what like my six
year old girl needs the volume down basically and for
you to look me in the eye and say I'm
not leaving you like I love you and I'm here
and we're okay.

Speaker 3 (10:51):
Yeah, I feel like this is very like I can
see it.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
So like I think everyone's younger version needs something else.
So can he articulate what he needs? And that would
be how you can love him best?

Speaker 4 (11:02):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (11:03):
Yeah, I love that because I feel like I can
watch that. I can just watch the wall.

Speaker 4 (11:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
Oh it's heartbreaking when that happens. But and you can
all probably I know when mine goes up yeah, you know.

Speaker 4 (11:14):
Yeah, and I'm just like, oh, how do I best
love you in this current moment? Because for me, I
would be like hug me, but then walk away like
and take a breath.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
But for him, I'm like, I'm still.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
A really good question asking him.

Speaker 3 (11:28):
Yeah, I know I need to ask.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
I know we've been together for four years, but it's like, you're.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
That's the thing, like keep asking questions, like do a
date night every couple of weeks and then and then
have a question that's like I don't know this about
him and I want to know, you know, and just
keep a note a list of like questions in your
phone because there's things I did a date night with
Alan a couple weeks ago, and I was like, tell
me one story from childhood that I that I've never heard,
and it just starts like kind of a conversation. It's like,
oh my gosh, that's so funny, and I, you know,

(11:55):
that's and then I got to learn about a new
friend and you know. So I think it's just like
always ask questions and always being curious about your partner
kind of keeps that exciting and fresh too.

Speaker 4 (12:05):
I feel like people view marriages like Okay, you did it,
and now I'm like, no, we're just getting.

Speaker 2 (12:10):
Started, like yeah, and that's and it's great that you're
so open and willing to want to have those conversations
and to you know, I'm not saying you all have
to do therapy together, but the fact that you're doing
your work is like, that's incredible. And I think one
of the like keep asking questions. And then one of
the best questions that I sometimes forget to ask in
the morning but I've tried, is how can I how

(12:32):
can I help you today? Like what can I what
can I do that will help your day? And I
think if you can, and then hopefully they'll recipport you
know that, and also ask because it can't always just
be It's not always you know, just a one way street.
So and I think that just the more you lean
into it, it's uh, the more he'll open up to it.

(12:53):
I really truly believe that. It's like this my same
like walk with Alan on the the you know, the
going to church and stuff. It's like I'm not going
to force it all on him, but if he can
walk alongside me, then maybe he'll you know, pick up
pieces too. Love it with you yeah, you are a joy.
Thank you, thank you.

Speaker 3 (13:11):
So much, thank you, thank you.

Speaker 2 (13:13):
