Speaker 2 (00:04):
Outout Friday cannot be the answer to the question. It's
ninety seven point one WASHFM. Welcome to Friday, by the way,
the fourteenth day of August for summer day before payday
for others, you do, I guess the every other Friday thing.
I don't know how you get paid at your workplace,
but I do know this. The weekend is at hand.
There's a lot to look forward to. We just have

(00:25):
to get there first, and we will. First, though, let's
get started by talking about something that gives us some
joy that we're feeling good about before five o'clock in
the morning here at ninety seven point one WASHFM. Chilly,
what would that be for you?

Speaker 3 (00:40):
So this weekend we are belatedly celebrating my dad's birthday.
He turned eighty five on August second, but we are
going to be celebrating it this weekend.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
That's a good long life.

Speaker 4 (00:51):
With a nice little brunch.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
That's awesome. Yeah, eighty five years old or eighty five
years young, depends on your perspective. That's true. Think of
the things that in eighty five years somebody has seen
you know the way the world's changed, the way the
world continues to change. Well, that is great. I hope
you guys have a wonderful happy birthday. My significant other

(01:14):
and I might be going to see an Orioles game.
Do you want to know something very interesting Chile. I
have never been to Oriole Park at Camden Yard.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Never.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
I've walked through there, but I've never seen a game.

Speaker 4 (01:26):
Oh my god, it's one of the best ballparks in
the country.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
That is what they say.

Speaker 4 (01:30):
You know, Oh, You've got to walk around outside of it,
like there's so many cool cool things.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
Yeah, I know. I mean I remember walking by there
and seeing like little things on the ground where people
hit home runs too and stuff. But she posed that question,
and I think we might end up doing it, although
I haven't checked the schedule, but it was one of
those things where we just kind of were thrown around
things that we might want to do to say Saturday,
and that came up, and I'm like, hmm.

Speaker 4 (01:56):
Well, hopefully you will make it happen tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
I've never I've seen a ballgame that I haven't enjoyed
seeing in person, So we'll have to see what we'll
see and hopefully There'll be some great news to report
as we get into a new week next week. It's
ninety seven point one watching have FM right now right
now though, Speaking of reports, got some news to report
unto you. Top Stories at the top of the hour

(02:19):
is next what are you working on?

Speaker 3 (02:22):
A lot of students heading back to college this week,
and a new report finds the top college major nationwide,
and I'll share what that is in just a few.

Speaker 5 (02:38):
Top Stories Top of the Hour.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
A US aircraft carrier is facing a mental health crisis
after a record two hundred and sixty four days at sea.
Family members say that sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln
have attempted to jump overboard, including one who is rescued.
Last month, USS George Washington is expected to relieve the
Lincoln in the Middle East. Kennedy Center board voted to

(03:03):
close the building for two years of renovations and also
to restore the president's name to it, adding the inscription
restored and renovated by President Donald J.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
Trump.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
This all comes after a federal judge had already ordered
that his name needed to be removed from the building.
The World War II Memorial was vandalyzed yesterday with spray
painted graffiti that read clean hands, Dirty money, while the
fountains overflowed with soap bubbles. US Park Police closed the
memorial and are now investigating. Alexandria police say a programming

(03:37):
error led to one hundred and fifteen incorrect speed camera
citations near Hammond Middle School between August and February, and
anyone who paid will be automatically refunded. DC's DMV has
launched a new Purple Heart specialty license plate for combat
wounded veterans and their surviving spouses. There is no annual feet,

(03:59):
just a one time, ten day application with proceeds that'll
support the Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs. And a new
report finds that business and Accounting now are the top
college majors nationwide for twenty twenty six, and that's followed
by Health, Sciences and engineering. Majors offering practical skills and

(04:19):
clearer paths are seeing the biggest gains overall. Forecast today
cloudy's guys, with a chance of scattered storms this afternoon.
Highs around eighty five right now seventy five in Gainesville.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
And that's the news top stories. Yours at the top
of the hour when you get up with ninety seven
point one watch FM and Toby and Chile in the
morning and coming in just a few minutes, Wake up Toby,
it's Friday. I know your morning mindset. It's when we
talk about how you're doing. And since it is Friday,
we go back to the eighties and nineties and the
lyrics of some songs from the past to find inspiration

(04:54):
for today, all in honor of your Best of the
Eighties weekend. It starts today at five. Don't miss that.
It's just a few minutes away Friday morning in the
nation's capital. It's ninety seven point one, Watch up VM
Shelby at Chilly in the morning, and it's time now
for us to talk about you with your morning mindset.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
This is where we pause, find a quote and share
it with you now. On our Fridays, we always kick
off our Best of the eighties and nineties weekend at
five pm.

Speaker 4 (05:21):
And you tend to find a lyric from one of
those decades.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
Yes, because you know two decades of music and songs
that have inspired I think there's probably something we can
find from them that will inspire us now. And so
from the eighties, Crowded House the song something so Strong,
and specifically the lyrics, something so strong could carry us away,
something so strong could carry us today. Okay, so what

(05:48):
are the people in Crowded House when they wrote that
in nineteen eighty seven? What are they trying to say
to us that applies to today? Well, I think that
it might be this, we're often stronger than the thing
or things that we're afraid might break us. Yeah, we're
often stronger than the thing or the things which we're

(06:09):
afraid might break us. I don't know what that might
be for you. I know that there are probably any
number of things that, at times, if I'm honest, I'm
afraid of that could break things. But you know what,
we're stronger than that. So if that song comes on
this weekend, remember that we talked about this. And if
you don't hear it, well, if you're really, really good,

(06:30):
I'll put I'll put a link to it of the
video that is on the Toby and chilipage at WASHFM
dot com at your morning mindset. And if something inspires
you and you think about it over the weekend, feel
free to send it our way and perhaps you too
could inspire the DMV in this space on Monday with
another morning mindset. We're Toby and Chilly in the morning.

(06:50):
It is ninety seven point one wash FM. Now that
you're good to go mentally, stay with us because we're
good to go with TikTok shop.

Speaker 3 (06:58):
Look, if you're on tiktoks, sometimes you get sucked into
ordering stuff, buying stuff. You said you bought your first
thing off of the TikTok shop.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
Yep, and here's this thing that came in.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
Oh Lord, have mercy. You're gonna have to give us
more details.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
Yeah. Now, Chili, I know you are a seasoned shopper
on TikTok. It's n e seven point one wash up.
Then Toby and Chili in the morning. Oh yeah, I, however,
am not a seasoned shopper. And the other night at home,
before I fell asleep, I just was poking around on
TikTok looking at crazy things, because that's what you do,
and I came across those ads that they now run

(07:36):
on TikTok. One of them came up or a screen protector,
which is something I don't currently have on my phone,
which is very important to have for your phone. I
bought this screen protector that I'm holding in my hand
right now, chili, and it's very It was very inexpensive.
It was less than twenty dollars.

Speaker 3 (07:50):
You are rolling the dice because to your point, it
doesn't cost a lot of money, so it's tempting to
take that risk. And personally, it's literally fifty to fifty.
Half the time, I'm like, man, this it really was
worth seven bucks or eight bucks or whatever I paid,
And then the other half of the time it's junk,
like not even worth seven cents.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
Well, no, I'm like, do I want to put this
on my phone? Because what if it is the other
side of that fifty to fifty equation, what if it
is junk.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
Well, you're not gonna know until you try it. It's
not going to hurt your phone to put a screen
protector on it. You just will know if it doesn't work,
if your screen still cracks.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
That came and then soon the memory cards that I
ordered will come. And one of our colleagues pointed out
something interesting to me yesterday. Isn't it funny how you
buy certain things off of a site like TikTok, and
the font and the packaging looks just like the one
you would go get it say best Buy or some
other shop target dupes.

Speaker 4 (08:40):
They're dupes, and they try to show you exactly what
they're duping.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
If this looks like this name brand, because our font
looks just like that name brand's font.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
Well this dupe better do its job, because I might
be a little unhappy about it. But then again, I
guess it didn't cost an arm and a leg, but
I would hate to be screwed over by it. So
I'll apply this to the phone. I'll get the memory
cards later today because they're good about letting you know that,
and then i'll report back how everything works. Or if
I throw toys around the playpen, it'll be because I'm

(09:11):
poopy pants that it didn't work. But you know, you
get what you pay for, right.

Speaker 4 (09:15):
Yeah, I mean it's addictive. Just be careful.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Oh lord, it's ninety seven point one WASHFM. The news
is on the way, Top stories at the top of
the hour, Chilly, what's going on?

Speaker 3 (09:23):
A new survey reveals what Americans think is the sexiest
accent in the US.

Speaker 4 (09:30):
And I've got the answer to that in just a few.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
Later on today five o'clock. It's your best of the
eighties and nineties.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
Weekend make sure you're listening, because you know, we love
to play the soundtrack in your life.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
All the memory, so many of the ninety seven point one.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
WASHEFM ninety seven point one WASHFM, Washington, an iHeartRadio station,
coming up on Top Stories, Top of the Hour.

Speaker 3 (09:57):
The Kennedy Centers board has voted to or the President's
name on the building. We've got the latest on that
story and others on the way with Toby and Chilly
in the morning, ninety seven point one wash FM.

Speaker 5 (10:14):
Top Stories, Top of the Hour.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
Luigi Mangione is expected to plead guilty today to federal
stocking charges that are tied to the twenty twenty four
killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Legal experts say
a federal plea deal could complicate or even block the
state case under double jeopardy protections, and now he faces
life in prison in either case. The Kennedy Center's board

(10:39):
voted to add the President's name to the building facade,
and it would read restored and renovated by President Donald J.

Speaker 4 (10:48):
Trump.

Speaker 3 (10:48):
Now, most of the venue is going to be closed
for two years of renovations, in a move that could
really defy the court order that had blocked adding his name.
US Park police are investigating after vandals hit the World
War Two memorial on the National Mall yesterday. There was
pink graffiti that read clean hands, dirty money, and bubbles

(11:10):
that were found in the fountain. The Interior Department vows
to find those who are responsible. A sixty one year
old teacher's been charged with assault after allegedly pulling a
three year old boy's hair and pushing his head into
a basket and shoving him to the ground. This happened
at a rest in daycare. Bright Horizon says that Jasper

(11:30):
Barrage has been fired, and a new survey finds Americans
ranked the Southern accent as the most attractive one nationwide,
with Louisiana topping the list of individual state accents, followed
by Texas and California. Forecast today cloudy with the chance
of scattered storms later on highs around eighty five. Right

(11:51):
now seventy six in Gaithersburg.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
Top stories at the top of the hour. You've got
the news. Now stay right there, because here at ninety
seven point one WATCHFM with Toby and Chilly in the morning.
We know back to school time can be a thing
and the demands on you can just be overwhelming for
a few weeks as you prepare to shift back into
that routine. Well, there are some things that teachers would

(12:15):
like for you to know during this time. What is
it they want us to know? Well, we'll run that down.
I personally always believe that teachers should get paid with
doctors and lawyers get paid. Do you know why, because
oftentimes they're called to do more than just teach. At times,
they have to raise the kid, be the therapist for
the kid, be a psychologist for the kid, and then

(12:35):
they have to sometimes do that for the parents. It's
ninety seven point one. Watch FM Toby and Chilly in
the morning. Here's something that teachers would like for parents
to know as we get into this new school year.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
Yeah, and I have a school age son, so he's
about to enter middle school. He's twelve years old, and
he is a neurodivergent, so he's on the autism spectrum
and has ADHD. And I will tell you, Toby that
the teachers that we've had so far have been amazing.
I think part of the reason is number one on
this list is that they want you to know that
you're all on the same team.

Speaker 4 (13:05):
Okay, they want what's best for your kid too.

Speaker 3 (13:07):
For the most part, I know some of you are
rolling your eyes saying not every teacher wants that. Well,
most teachers actually do right, So you guys have to
work together and be on the same page in order
for your child to succeed.

Speaker 2 (13:18):
They also want you to stay engaged, be positive, speak positively,
mom and dad.

Speaker 3 (13:23):
Yeah, I love the respect teachers boundaries. Okay, just because
a parent fires off an email at night or the
teacher fires off an email at night, doesn't mean we
need to expect that teacher to respond.

Speaker 4 (13:34):
Right before the next school day.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
Give them a day or two to get to your
email right because they've got a lot of things on
their plate.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
Yeah. I like the one that says, and I chuckle
at it sugar and sleep, because well, sugar is not
necessarily a good thing for a kid to be jacked
up on when he goes to school or she and sleep. Yes,
they need it. And here's the other thing too, parents,
These teachers are here to do a job, and by
the way, they have to do the job not just

(14:01):
for you and for your kid. But you have to
multiply that times thirty. So walk a mile in their
shoes before you pop off or before you start getting
really needy, and.

Speaker 3 (14:10):
Help them out. Man, they volunteers all the time. Raise
your hand and help them out with stuff for the
classroom and or any of the events and activities that
they're doing. And I promise you it'll make the whole
experience better for everybody involved.

Speaker 2 (14:22):
That's right. And Chili's going to be running for the
PTA presidency.

Speaker 3 (14:25):
No, no, no, not get it twisted. I'm a very
active PTA member, but I ain't running anything.

Speaker 2 (14:30):
Okay, never mind, forget about that. Though the Chili and
Mark candidacy will not happen. I want to read the list.
Gotch covered Toby a Chili page washf them dot com
say right there, Next is Toby and Chilli in the
Morning continues.

Speaker 3 (14:41):
See shocking number of people who say they have shoplifted.

Speaker 2 (14:45):
What there's thieves and they're everywhere these days. Check out
this stat ninety seven point one WASHFM Toby at Chili
in the Morning. Thirty percent of Americans say that they've shoplifted,
and that numbers up big time from twenty three percent
in twenty twenty four.

Speaker 4 (15:03):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (15:03):
Leading the way as shoplifters, gen Z and millennials.

Speaker 3 (15:09):
Well, economic conditions remain the leading factor that was cited
by people who admitted to shoplifting. Ninety percent said it
was the inflation. Of course, the broader economy. It's a
contributing factor. We all know how expensive things are everything.
It's hard to make ends meet, and so then it
makes sense that the most commonly reported items that are

(15:30):
stolen food non alcoholic drinks, and then that's followed by clothing.

Speaker 4 (15:35):
You know, people are just trying to feed themselves, and
it's a little bit tough.

Speaker 2 (15:39):
I don't know that I'm willing to throw a flag
at the people who are just trying to keep their
families fed. I'm not condoning it. I'm not saying you
should go out and start robbing aldy. But there's a
difference between stealing from say a store at Tysons and
a groceries.

Speaker 3 (15:55):
You mean like Louis Vaton bags, Well, yes, exactly, versus
some pro lot.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
So people are trying to steal the Louis vatans up
because you know, there's nothing good that can come from
what they're trying to do by stealing.

Speaker 4 (16:06):
Yeah, they're trying to store.

Speaker 2 (16:08):
I mean discretion of the law is a powerful weapon.

Speaker 4 (16:11):
I know, it's really really tough.

Speaker 3 (16:13):
Now we're looking at like personally, you and I. When
I was a kid, I and I think a lot
of little kids, you indvitinently like grab something and you
don't know until you get home.

Speaker 4 (16:24):
Your mom's like, what where did that come from? How'd
you stick that candy bar in your pocket?

Speaker 1 (16:28):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (16:29):
No, I got I got busted at one of those
five and dime stores by my mom, who caught me
after baseball practice with my batting glove. I put a
bunch of jelly bracelets in my batting glove. Thought I
was all clever. No, Mama knew.

Speaker 3 (16:44):
Did you some people make you go right back and
apologize and then pay for it?

Speaker 2 (16:48):
Or did you just had to go put them back?
And then let's just say I wasn't sitting down for
a little while after I got home and Mom reinforced
the lesson thou shalt not steal.

Speaker 3 (17:00):
Yeah, you don't want to, You don't want to be
doing that, and you probably never did after that.

Speaker 2 (17:04):
No, no, no, never again, no no no. If you
want to read the statistics behind this, and maybe you've
got some thoughts you want to offer up, you'll find
everything on the Toby and Chili page at washefm dot
com and tap the talkback microphone. It's open for you
if you want to speak out. Ninety seven point one

they would rather take advice from a food fluenzer than
their own mom. Forty percent say that they now use

this Friday, a local teen who just picked up playing
field hockey a couple of months ago will now be
playing on a much bigger stage.

Speaker 2 (22:40):
Because of the world we live in. You see the news,
It goes without saying that we need something that makes
us feel good, especially on a Friday, and this is
one of those stories. At ninety seven point one Wash FM,
Toby and Chilly in the morning. For years, for years,
Aiden Smith laced up with the Nova Coolcats. They are

(23:00):
if you haven't heard, an adaptive ice hockey team skating
on the very ice the Capital's practice on in Arlington.
And that's when a coach from another team floated this
idea the USA Field Hockey. They were putting together a
squad for the very first ever Para Hockey World Cup
and would Aiden be interested.

Speaker 6 (23:22):
Well.

Speaker 3 (23:22):
Aiden had never really played, but he had watched his
sister take the field at Wakefield High School. So he
tried it out two weekends on the pitch and it
all clicked, which then led to a training camp in
Pennsylvania where he impressed enough people to land a spot
on the US roster, and then at a camp in
Saint Louis, the team came up short a goalie. Aiden

(23:43):
decided to raise his hand and now that is his
position as a goalie. He reads the play, blocks it deflects,
it keeps that ball out.

Speaker 2 (23:51):
His mom says, he is endlessly adaptable, thrilled to be
bonding with teammates from LA to PA. And later this month,
James going to Belgium to make history at the inaugural
Para Hockey World Cup. He'll be taking on squads from Pakistan,
also France, Germany and beyond.

Speaker 3 (24:10):
You know, for Aiden, a former wakefield track athlete, this
is a huge payoff months of lifting, running and learning
with the goalie pads.

Speaker 4 (24:21):
It's all coming to a head now.

Speaker 2 (24:23):
And for his family, it's about something bigger. Proof that
kids with disabilities and I put disabilities in air quotes,
they do belong on the world stage. What a great story, Aidan.

Luigi Mangione is said to plead guilty to federal charges
in the killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. He
faces stocking charges resulting in the death of Thompson, and
could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted. The
Kennedy Center's board voted again to add the President's name
to the building yesterday, this time with an inscription that'll

(26:41):
read restored and renovated by President Donald J.

Speaker 4 (26:45):
Trump Now.

Speaker 3 (26:46):
The move likely triggers another court fight, since a federal
judge had already ruled earlier this year that the president's
name could not stay on the building. A construction worker
died in Woodbridge after a mobile trailer's supports collapsed on
him yesterday morning while he and three others worked on it.
The twenty six year old was trapped underneath and died

(27:07):
at the scene. The World War II Memorial was vandalized
yesterday with spray painted graffiti reading clean Hands, Dirty money,
while its fountains overflowed with soap bubbles. US Park police
closed the memorial and are now investigating, and finally, a
new survey finds that ninety three percent of Americans shopped
online in the past week, with the average household getting

(27:30):
nearly three packages a week. Free shipping matters the most,
with ninety four percent saying that it factors into where
they shop, and eighty one percent admit they have padded
their cart just to get that minimum for free shipping.

could carry us today. So what does this mean? Well,
this means that we're stronger than the thing we're afraid

close to home for you today or with your family life,
or maybe you're worried about the weekend for whatever reason,
