Speaker 1 (00:00):
Toby and Chili mornings on demand on 97.1 Wash FM.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Second day of school for some, third day of school
for others. Don't worry, you'll get through the first week
without any ugly crying, I promise.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
Did that already happen?

Speaker 4 (00:13):
Sorry.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
It's 97.1 Wash FM, Toby and Chili in the morning.
Why are you feeling good today?

Speaker 5 (00:18):
Tell us.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
866-927-4361.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Chili, why are you feeling good today?

Speaker 5 (00:23):
Getting into the routine, like you said, it is the
third day of school for those of us in Fairfax County. And, um,
I'm going to get my hair done. So hair appointment today,
pick up some prescriptions, some errands to run without worrying
about a kid at home. He's at school. So that's great.
It's nice to get back into the routine in that sense.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
I am excited because it'll be quiet during the middle
of the day. After I get done with physical therapy today,
I will take a nap and the kids will not
be present in the pool. And I will not hear
splashing until probably after three or so, in which case...
But that's fine by me because you know what? At
least I will have gotten a good nap in. And
that is what counts when you get up early in

(01:08):
the morning. It's 97.1 Wash FM. You feeling good this morning?
Tell us why we're listening. And if you need the news,
hang out. Top stories at the top of the hour
on the way. What's going on?

Speaker 5 (01:18):
You probably heard the news yesterday that country music icon
Dolly Parton passed away at the age of 80. Well,
now we've got more details on her death and we'll
share it with you in just a few.

Speaker 6 (01:32):
Top stories, top of the hour.

Speaker 5 (01:34):
Country music icon Dolly Parton has died at the age
of 80 after a brief battle with cancer. Her family
says that she passed peacefully at Nashville's Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center,
surrounded by loved ones. Not only did she win 11
Grammys and sell over 100 million records worldwide, but Dolly
was also known for her philanthropy. A California man facing

(01:58):
charges after allegedly parking a truck that was carrying a
guillotine near the U.S. Capitol yesterday. Police arrested the 35-year-old
suspect for carrying a dangerous weapon. The administration is warned
in a court filing that it could demolish the Kennedy
Center if renovation plans are blocked, saying that the building
risks becoming unsafe without them. An outdoor amphitheater along the

(02:21):
Potomac has been floated as a replacement for the building.
Prince George's County Schools is fixing transportation problems. Apparently about
10,000 students were affected yesterday after the district's bus tracking
app crashed and some stops had no bus assigned. The
district is adding staff to fix the issue. Virginia lawmakers

(02:44):
and advocates are now pushing to require a licensed nurse
in every single public schools after data shows that about 10%
currently operate without one. State law currently just permits nurses
rather than mandating them. And a new ranking of America's
favorite dog breeds for 2026 finds non-designer mixed breeds as

(03:07):
number one, followed by Labrador Retrievers and then Golden Retrievers.
Forecast today will have partly cloudy skies, highs around 86,
right now 64 in Arlington.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Need a little bit of get me up out of
bed and get me started today? Know the feeling. It's
97.1 Wash FM. Stay right there now that you've got
the news. Top stories at the top of the hour.
Hang for a minute and we'll give you hopefully what
it is you need to take on a brand new
day with your morning mindset. If you're one of the
many bus drivers getting ready to go for today, thank

(03:41):
you for choosing 97.1 Wash FM.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
We're Toby and Chili in the morning.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
And it's time now for something that we hope can
give a little extra lift to your day. We call
it your morning mindset.

Speaker 5 (03:51):
We find a quote and then we share it with
you to think about as you take on the rest
of your day.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
George Elliott says this morning, it's never too late to
be what you might have been. It is never too
late to be what you might have been. You might
be Laying in bed this morning, hitting snooze again, thinking,
what am I doing? Why have I put this expiration
date on myself?

Speaker 3 (04:15):
Well, you know what?

Speaker 2 (04:16):
That's imaginary. That expiration date is imaginary. Career change, starting over,
falling in love, getting healthier. Today, it doesn't care how
old you are. It really just wants to know what
you're going to do with today that's going to make
a difference. So think about that. Get out of bed

(04:36):
and get your day started, unless, of course, your day's
already started, in which case, keep that in mind as
you go. It is never too late to be what
you might have been, according to George Eliot. I think
that's good advice for all of us to keep in
mind as we get into a brand new day. And
that is your morning mindset. If you need it again,
you'll find it in stories. You can find it on Insta.
You can find it on Facebook. You can find the

(04:59):
Toby and Chili page at washfm.com and share with us
something that gives you a little bit of extra lift
as we get into a new day. In the meantime,
stay right there because in just a few.

Speaker 5 (05:10):
I totally forgot to ask you how your girlfriend reacted
to the birthday gift you gave her and whether she's
actually using.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
It or not.

Speaker 5 (05:19):
So can you please give us an update?

Speaker 3 (05:21):
Toby and Tilly in the morning.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
It is 97.1 Wash FM on a Wednesday morning as
you make your way into this, the middle of the week.
Thank God the weekend is now a conversation. So you
wanted to know something this morning there, Tilly?

Speaker 7 (05:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (05:38):
So a couple of weeks ago, you said you purchased
your girlfriend a travel bag, a really nice high end
travel bag. And I asked you, do you think she's
going to like it and or use it? And now
I'm wondering how... How was her reaction? I mean, did
she appreciate what you did for her?

Speaker 2 (05:56):
Absolutely, because it was a vintage travel bag. One that, well,
you know, doesn't really lose value over time unless, of course,
you just mistreat it.

Speaker 5 (06:05):
Because you got it refurbished, right?

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Well, I bought it with the intention of refurbishing it.
And I did so. And I put, you know, a
new this on it, got a new that for it,
and then gifted it to her.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
And she was like, wow.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
She said, quote, This is not something that I would
have gotten for myself. And I appreciate what you did
for me with this. So I think I did OK.

Speaker 5 (06:30):
I was really, really impressed with the effort you put
into getting her that gift. But the really the question remains, Toby,
she has since traveled.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
She's on the road right now.

Speaker 5 (06:39):
Did she or is she using said bag?

Speaker 2 (06:42):
She says she is. I have not seen photographic proof,
but I believe it.

Speaker 5 (06:46):
Oh, good.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
I don't think she would.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
I don't think she would say to me, I'm using
your bag if she wasn't. But, you know, I'm the podster.
I would have stirred the pod.

Speaker 5 (06:55):
That's awesome.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
But I believe that that bag is in Norfolk right
now while she is on a work trip. And then
wherever her next work trip will be in the month
of September.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
God, we're already there.

Speaker 5 (07:06):
I think that's awesome. I love that she's using the gift,
and I know that you must feel good about that, too,
because you did put in so much effort.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
Well, yeah, trying to find the things that it needed
and then having to go through the rigmarole of lining
them up and then making sure that the bag was
perfect and it checked all the certain boxes.

Speaker 5 (07:24):
Well, now you've set the bar, so good luck with Christmas.

Speaker 8 (07:28):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:29):
It'll all be very vintage, I'm sure.

Speaker 7 (07:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
97.1 Wash FM. We're Toby and Chili in the morning.

I'll be sharing the results of a recent survey in
just a few.

you want to go see the Jonas Brothers.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
Because Nick is the hottest and so is Joe.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
Kevin is cute too.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
Give us your reason. Tell us why you love them
and those tickets could be yours.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
97.1 WASH-FM, Washington. An iHeartRadio station. Coming up on Top Stories,
top of the hour.

Speaker 5 (08:26):

icon Dolly Parton. We've got the latest on that story
and others on the way. With Toby and Chili in
the morning on 97.1 WASH-FM.

Speaker 6 (08:41):
Top stories, top of the hour.

Speaker 5 (08:44):
Country music legend Dolly Parton has died at the age
of 80 after a brief battle with cancer. She earned
11 Grammys and sold over 100 million records across a
six-decade career, alongside acting and a lot of philanthropy. The
president yesterday ordered flags lowered to half-staff. Meanwhile, Dolly was

(09:05):
reportedly working on plans for a digital performing avatar. Two
people have died from measles in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Both
individuals were unvaccinated, and officials say these are the first
measles-related deaths in Pennsylvania in 35 years. The University of
Maryland could see up to a 30 percent drop in

(09:25):
new graduate students this fall after the president proposed capping
international student visas at just four years. Both College Park
and UMB are now part of a lawsuit challenging the policy.
A critical rail junction just south of Union Station is
going to be shutting down October 16th through the 26th
for a full replacement, cutting off Virginia DC train service.

(09:49):
So VRE riders will not be able to reach Union
Station and some Amtrak trains will terminate in Alexandria, but
they will have bus service and metro transfers to fill
the gap.

Speaker 4 (10:00):
D.C.

Speaker 5 (10:01):
's Transportation Department has launched a pilot testing solar reflective
cool pavement coatings at five urban heat island sites. Officials
say that similar coatings have actually cooled other city streets
by as much as 20 degrees. And finally, a new
survey finds that 43% of Americans report rising health care

(10:21):
anxiety driven mainly by cost. 54% cite affordability as their
biggest worry. And despite that, 84% say they still trust
their own doctors. Forecasts today will have partly cloudy skies
with highs around 86. Right now, 64 in Waldorf.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
Remember, you get Toby and Chili's top stories at the
top of the hour here at 97.1 Wash FM. The
world said goodbye to Dolly Parton yesterday afternoon. And as such,
let's remember a life well lived, a life that touched
so many others.

Speaker 3 (10:57):
866-927-4361.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
If you've been thinking about Dolly Parton this morning or
perhaps maybe yesterday and you want to share with the
class what's on your mind, we are listening. Give us
a call now and, well, as Dolly would say, we'll
all go to church together.

Speaker 3 (11:12):
Coming up in just a few.

Speaker 2 (11:13):
97.1 Wash FM, Toby and Chili in the morning, saying
goodbye and remembering Dolly Parton this morning. If you did
not get the news, you must not have been paying
too much attention yesterday, right around 2.30 when the world
found out that Dolly Parton was no longer with us.

(11:34):
She had checked herself into a hospital in Nashville, and
that's where ultimately she said goodbye.

Speaker 5 (11:40):
Yeah, she reportedly died from cancer. And about a year ago,
March of last year, her husband, Carl, passed away. And
she admitted in an interview recently that she kind of
neglected her own health after Carl's passing. So at the
very least, she is reunited with her beloved.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
Boy, heaven got a great new voice for the choir yesterday. 866-927-4361.
Let's talk about Dolly Parton this morning. You've got thoughts,
you've got memories, things on your mind.

Speaker 3 (12:07):
Go right ahead. We'll start with you, Stacey, in Landover.

Speaker 7 (12:11):
The passing of Dolly Parton is so, so, so sad.
I loved it when she started the book campaign for
kids that needed books, libraries, for music. and some of
her nine to five i loved that you know.

Speaker 5 (12:28):
You mentioned her philanthropy imagination library she actually donated or
worked with a dc public library system to help like
a hundred thousand kids locally.

Speaker 7 (12:38):
She is an icon just like tina turner i mean
an icon just it's.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
Unbelievable thank you ma'am and miranda thank you for listening
this morning in alexandria go.

Speaker 8 (12:49):
Ahead I am saddened by it. When Kenny Rogers died, though,
I cried because Dolly Parton and Kenny were best friends. So,
I suppose she's in heaven with Kenny now.

Speaker 2 (12:59):
That's the first thing I thought of was my grandmother
and how she loved that song, Islands in the Stream.

Speaker 5 (13:05):
Oh, it's a classic.

Speaker 3 (13:06):
Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton together. Go and find it
on our iHeartRadio app. You can listen to it on demand.

Speaker 8 (13:12):
My favorite was probably her movie.

Speaker 3 (13:14):
Which one?

Speaker 5 (13:15):
Yeah, Rhinestone with Sylvester Stallone.

Speaker 3 (13:17):
You know that movie.

Speaker 8 (13:18):
The Code of Many Colors, I think, was like so
inspirational and it was all about her life. I made
both of my kids watch it at the time and
we all cried together.

Speaker 3 (13:28):
Thank you so much for that.

Speaker 2 (13:29):
You know, there are probably less than a handful of
people who have caused the world to pause at the
news of their passing.

Speaker 3 (13:37):
Dolly Parton being one of them.

Speaker 2 (13:39):
If you have some things on your mind, some stuff
you'd like to share, some Dolly Parton moments that popped
into your head when you got the news, 866-927-4361. Give
us a call and we.

Speaker 3 (13:51):
Will talk again in just a few.

Speaker 2 (13:54):
Jump into this conversation as we remember Dolly Parton at
866-927-4361 or when you tap the talkback microphone. If you're
listening to us on your iHeart app right now, it's
97.1 Wash FM with Toby and Chili in the morning.

Speaker 5 (14:07):
And just to catch you up, we're learning today that
she passed away at the age of 80 after a
brief battle with cancer.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
It says a lot that the world has been kind
of in wall to wall coverage on Dolly Parton's passing
since yesterday afternoon at about 230. It's a testament to
the woman that she was, not just for her music
or for what she did on the big screen, but
for the way she lived her life. You know, there
are some people who talk about, you know, trying to
live a good life. They get the success and you

(14:38):
never really hear about the things that they've done.

Speaker 3 (14:41):
And Dolly never pounded her chest.

Speaker 4 (14:43):
No.

Speaker 2 (14:43):
But other people around her certainly talked about all of
the good that she did for so many people around
the world.

Speaker 5 (14:49):
I mean, she's known for her philanthropy, but she's also
known for not being a divisive person. I mean, she
loved all people and she stayed out of all things
that could cause any kind of controversy. And that's quite
a way to live your life.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
Exactly.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
It is 97.1 Wash FM. Stacey, good morning and thank
you for listening in Bethesda.

Speaker 4 (15:09):
Yeah, she was just such a sweet soul. It's so sad.
I feel like we're losing a national treasure.

Speaker 5 (15:15):
What was the most impressive thing about Dolly to you?

Speaker 4 (15:18):
I loved how she... She was always doing charity work,
and she just really gave back to the community and
her presence. She's just so sweet, and anyone that knows her,
she's a really good-hearted human being.

Speaker 3 (15:34):
Thank you, Stacey.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
You know, I was really moved by the way Dolly
quietly penned notes to people. She was just in every
sense of the word good. Mary in Fairfax, Dolly Parton.

Speaker 4 (15:47):
I absolutely love Dolly Parton.

Speaker 5 (15:49):
So many good movies.

Speaker 8 (15:50):
My heart is breaking. She was a phenomenal person.

Speaker 4 (15:53):
She will truly be missed.

Speaker 3 (15:54):
Very true.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
And thank you for the call and for letting us
know what's on your mind when it comes to Dolly
Parton this morning.

Speaker 5 (16:01):
Ella, thanks so much for being a part of the
show in Manassas. What are your thoughts?

Speaker 6 (16:05):
At least we know where she's gone and she's with
her husband now.

Speaker 5 (16:10):
So that's awesome.

Speaker 2 (16:11):
Just after seven o'clock, we'll get to the news. Top
stories at the top of the hour on the way.
What are you working on this morning?

Speaker 5 (16:17):
Believe it or not, minivans are making a comeback. And
I'll explain why in just a few.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
Chris Brown and us, you're coming to Edmonton Bank Stadium, Baltimore.
And thanks to Live Nation, we've got your tickets. Do
you want them? It's 97.1 Wash FM, Toby and Chili
in the morning.

Speaker 5 (16:34):

get it right, you win.

A 28-year-old Bethesda woman says she's going to donate $ 1, 000

the question again.

Speaker 5 (19:29):
23% of people do this for their pets once a month.
What is it?

Speaker 3 (19:35):
Take a guess right now. Get it right.

Speaker 2 (19:37):
Chris Brown and Usher in your future. It's 97.1 Wash FM.
Your nearly impossible question for Wednesday on.

Speaker 6 (19:45):
Toby and Chili's nearly impossible question.

Speaker 3 (19:47):
In case you missed it, this was the question today.

Speaker 5 (19:49):
23% of people say they do this for their pets
once a month. What is it?

Speaker 2 (19:55):
Tickets up for grabs. Chris Brown, Usher, M & T
Bank Stadium, Baltimore. Thank you, Live Nation, if you can
answer your Nearly Impossible Question correctly this morning.

Speaker 5 (20:04):
Good morning.

Speaker 3 (20:04):
What's your name and where are you from?

Speaker 8 (20:06):
Corey from Washington, D.C.

Speaker 3 (20:07):
All right, Corey, you got the question. What's your guess?

Speaker 4 (20:10):
I'm going to say take off of work.

Speaker 5 (20:11):
Ooh, great, great answer, but not the right one we're
looking for.

Speaker 3 (20:17):
But thank you for playing and you've given us a
great idea. Take off from work more often.

Speaker 7 (20:24):
All right.

Speaker 4 (20:24):
Thank you so much. Thanks, man.

Speaker 3 (20:25):
Try again tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (20:26):
All right.

Speaker 3 (20:26):
Hey, and what's your name and where are you from
this morning?

Speaker 5 (20:29):
Hi, good morning. It's Mary.

Speaker 8 (20:30):
I'm from Springfield, Virginia.

Speaker 3 (20:32):
Hey there, Mary. You got the question. Fire away with
that guess.

Speaker 8 (20:35):
Trim their nails.

Speaker 7 (20:36):
Okay.

Speaker 5 (20:37):
I try to trim my pet's nail at least once
a month, Mary, but no, that's not the answer either.
Sorry about that.

Speaker 1 (20:44):
Oh, thanks anyway.

Speaker 2 (20:46):
And your pets are sorry if they scratch you too,
by the way. Have a great day on purpose.

Speaker 8 (20:52):
You too.

Speaker 3 (20:52):
And try again tomorrow. Good morning, Michael. Where are you
from this morning? I'm from Highland. Well, welcome. You've got
the question. For the tickets to Chris Brown and Usher,
what is your guess?

Speaker 5 (21:03):
Do they cook for their pet? Cook for their pet
once a month. Is that something you have done, Michael?
A little leftovers.

Speaker 4 (21:09):
Whatever we can't eat. Right.

Speaker 3 (21:12):
It's heated up. The dog will never know the difference.

Speaker 5 (21:15):
Oh, the dog will appreciate it. 23% of people do
this for their pets once a month. And Michael, it
is indeed cook for their pet. So congrats to you.
That's amazing.

Speaker 1 (21:27):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 2 (21:27):
Going to see Chris Brown and Usher. Tickets belong to
you right now. Thanks to Live Nation. Enjoy the show
at M & T Bank Stadium.

Speaker 5 (21:34):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 2 (21:35):
More tickets to see Chris Brown and Usher tomorrow morning.
We'll play another round of your Nearly Impossible Question after
Top Stories at the top of the hour right around 7.10. Listen,
you could win. And stay right there because next.

Speaker 5 (21:47):
We've got a list of things that people who are
way too frugal do this would be a chance for
you to out yourself if you want to join the
conversation at 866-927-4361.

Speaker 2 (22:01):
Are you too frugal as a person? 97.1 Wash FM.
The number is 866-927-4361. If you are, what are you
guilty of when it comes to your frugality? Let us discuss.
There's an entire list floating around the internet. 27 different
things that say you might be super frugal.

Speaker 5 (22:23):
I'm going to share a couple of these. They say
you ration your lightbulbs. You'd rather go dark rather than
replace a burnt out bulb. You use your teabag multiple times.
And here's another one. You hoard side dishes into full
meals so you can turn like free coleslaw or a
cookie into your next entire meal. Those are just some examples.

Speaker 3 (22:45):
Well, those are indeed some very frugal things.

Speaker 5 (22:49):
Can you see something on this list that you might
do differently? That might be considered frugal.

Speaker 3 (22:54):
I see something my dad does.

Speaker 5 (22:56):
What's that?

Speaker 2 (22:56):
My dad stocks up on gas station creamers, sugar packets,
and condiments.

Speaker 6 (23:03):
And does he use them, though? Because some people.

Speaker 3 (23:05):
Will save those things. Oh, no, he will use them.
He does.

Speaker 2 (23:08):
There's a whole drawer at my family's house full of condiments.

Speaker 5 (23:12):
That he actually uses.

Speaker 3 (23:13):
That he uses.

Speaker 2 (23:14):
He goes to Whataburger, picks up some condiments. Then if
he goes to get himself some coffee at a place
they call Stripes, which is like 7-Eleven, he goes and
gets himself some creams and some Splendas.

Speaker 3 (23:27):
Well, there's never any shortage of them.

Speaker 5 (23:29):
We're going to throw parents under the bus. I'll tell
you what my mom used to do. God rest her soul, Mama.
She used to rinse and reuse Ziploc bags.

Speaker 3 (23:38):
Well, there's that.

Speaker 4 (23:39):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (23:42):
I mean, you know, and.

Speaker 5 (23:43):
I would always buster chops for it. But the only
thing I come close to doing is reusing like the
plastic grocery bags. I save those and then I'll use
them as trash bags or something. But you know what
I mean? Like, I don't just throw them out. So
there's that.

Speaker 3 (23:56):
What is a sign that you are?

Speaker 2 (23:59):

months later, act like I just discovered a new possession.

Speaker 5 (27:54):
Does anyone give you a hard time for it?

Speaker 9 (27:56):
My husband will be like, you already had that. And
I'm like, OK, but I forgot I had it.

Speaker 3 (28:01):
So technically, it's new.

Speaker 2 (28:03):
I don't know if that's frugality, Mary, or if that's
just making a really good excuse.

Speaker 5 (28:08):
No, it's forgetfulness.

Speaker 3 (28:11):
Thank you, Mary.

Speaker 2 (28:12):
