Toby and Chili mornings on demand on 97.1 Wash FM.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Well, good morning.
Speaker 3 (00:06):
It's 97.1 Wash FM. Toby and Chili on this Wednesday morning.
Welcome to the second day of September. I don't understand this.
We're supposed to be back in some sort of routine.
I mean, that's the September thing, right? But the weather
is confused. It still believes it's July. And then, you know, today,
(00:28):
I mean, is just like get to where you're supposed
to be because, well, we're just halfway through the week.
But the good news is, Chili, there's a holiday weekend
ahead of us. And what's not to love about an
extra day off around these parts?
Speaker 4 (00:42):
Absolutely.
Speaker 5 (00:43):
And at least in Fairfax County, they have this Friday
off as well, which is really crazy that they start school,
they stop school. It was like they just started last week.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
They already have a day off.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
There's something to be said about sending these kids to
school after Labor Day.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
I'm with you on that.
Speaker 5 (00:58):
But no, and I'm feeling good because our AC did
clunk out over the weekend briefly. We called for a
service visit. He was scheduled to come before the guy came.
It kicked back on. It was working again. So there's
nothing broken to show him, right?
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Right.
Speaker 4 (01:15):
So I am hopeful and praying that.
Speaker 5 (01:18):
That it stays working through the next couple of days
as we get through this heat wave.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (01:23):
I'm feeling good at the moment that it's working.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
She's feeling good because it's 70 degrees in her house.
That's right. I'm feeling good because, you know what, I'm
going to borrow from you. My air conditioning, knock on wood,
is working just fine. Now that I've jinxed it, I'm
probably going to have to put in work orders and stuff.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
We both jinxed it.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
Right? But you know what? Hey, you jinx it, that's life.
At least we're not out in the heat. Anyway, how
you doing this morning? What's making you feel good this
early morning? Why don't you tap the talk back microphone,
leave us a message and let us know. It's easy
if you're listening on your iHeart app, you're signed in,
just tap speak and send, okay? In the meantime, hang
(02:04):
out for the news, top stories at the top of
the hour in just a bit.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
What is going on?
Speaker 5 (02:09):
A new fan survey has crowned the NFL's least comfortable
stadium seats. Let's just say number one.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
Hits close to home and you'll find out what that is.
Speaker 6 (02:24):
Top stories, top of the hour.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
A short-term funding bill to avoid a government shutdown heading
to the president's desk after passing the House yesterday. It'll
keep the government funded through December 11th. The judge in
Lindsay Clancy's triple murder trial sent jurors back to keep
deliberating after they said yesterday morning that they.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
Could not reach a verdict.
Speaker 5 (02:46):
Jurors can consider murder, manslaughter, or not guilty verdict based
on lack of criminal responsibility. Well, crossing guards are heading
back to 11 Fairfax County high schools after a student
was hit by a car near South Lakes High School
yesterday morning. Fairfax County School says it's asking the county
to restore full funding after last year's budget eliminated the guards.
(03:10):
Prince William County Police trying to identify a man who
followed a 15-year-old girl inside the Dumfries Target Monday afternoon
and then exposed himself and.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
Made sexual gestures at her.
Speaker 5 (03:21):
Police released a surveillance photo and are now asking for
the public's help in identifying him. National Guard troops in D.C.
dropped by 663 in just one week. That is the
steepest weekly decline of the summer, falling to just over
3,600 as the final Freedom 250 anniversary event wrapped up.
(03:43):
And that is down 26% from the July peak of
nearly 5,000 National Guard troops. And a new fan survey
has now crowned the NFL's least comfortable stadium. Northwest Stadium,
home of the Commanders, is the most uncomfortable. It edges
out Seattle's Lumen Field. And now on the flip side,
(04:03):
Lucas Oil Stadium and Lambeau Field tied for the most
comfortable seats. Forecast today, partly cloudy with a chance of
a thunderstorm later. Highs around 90. That heat index near
100 again. Right now, 75 in Laurel.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Now that you've got the news, top stories at the
top of the hour. Hang out because we want to
check in on you and how you are doing with
your morning mindset. And some words that might help you
get through today. Maybe might turn the week around.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
You never know.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
But we'll all spend some time in thought coming up.
You know you can count on 97.1 Wash FM for
Washington's variety from the 80s, 90s, and today we are.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Toby and Chili in the morning.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
You can also count on us to take some time
to focus on you with your morning mindset.
Speaker 5 (04:47):
This is where we find a quote and share it
with you. Maybe it'll inspire or motivate you when you
hit a little bit of an obstacle today.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
You know, potholes that life just randomly throws into the
road of life. Toni Morrison reminds you and I this
morning that you are your best thing. Toni Morrison, you
are your best thing. Now, I know it sounds very you-centric, me-centric, whatever,
but here's the thing. You'll protect your time, your family,
(05:17):
your work. You'll protect everybody you love, right? Today, remember,
there's one more thing worth protecting, and that is you.
You are your best thing. Protect yourself today.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
All right?
Speaker 3 (05:31):
Only you can do it. It's 97.1 Wash FM. Hope
that helps.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Need it again? Find it.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Get us on social. You'll see it there. Check the
stories on Instagram, also Facebook. And, of course, you can
also reach out to us at Toby at ChiliPage, WashFM.com.
Hang out because coming up in just a few minutes
this morning.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
Move over, goat yoga. Now there's an organic cow spa
that's open.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Moo.
Speaker 4 (05:59):
Exactly.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Good morning, Herndon. Route 28 is part of your plan
this morning. Your coffee is still hot, which means you're
ahead of the game. It's 97.1 Watch FM. Toby and Chili,
in the morning, let's talk about cows.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
Yeah, forget about goat yoga.
Speaker 5 (06:15):
Now there's an organic cow spa that just opened up
at a farm in Maine. This is where humans can
enjoy wellness treatments inspired by the pampered lives of organic
dairy cows. So for $ 120... Toby, you get to cuddle
with cows. There's some meditation walks involved, massages with peppermint aromatherapy,
(06:37):
scalp treatments, and even some hoof care, you know, for
your feet.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
What happens if the cow goes mad cow, like doesn't
want to be cuddled?
Speaker 7 (06:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (06:49):
The only time you're really interacting with the cow is
for cuddling. And to your point, I have a feeling
that they're choosing specific cows. They may not mind the cuddle.
And by the way, this is less about pretending to
be a cow. It's more about embracing the fresh air,
the sunshine and the low stress lifestyle that organic cows
supposedly enjoy.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
As they stand out in the grass and they chew
on cud.
Speaker 5 (07:10):
Do you know what has always kept me from either
the goat yoga or even something like this? Maybe I'll
get some hate for this, but I have never, ever
enjoyed the smell of farm animals. It makes me sick
to my stomach. So I cannot, I cannot. Like when
I go to like the Montgomery County Fair and I'm
trying to pet the cows and whatnot, I can't do
(07:31):
it for more than a few seconds. So this would
not be relaxing. See, I grew up around it, so
I'm kind of used to it. It smells kind of
like ammonia and hay.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
And that's... Really, all I have to say about that,
it's not exactly my favorite.
Speaker 4 (07:42):
Well, then you can go ahead and sign up for this.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
No, no.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
Because like I said, Chili, I don't know about these cows.
I don't want them to get mad. Goats, they, you know,
have those horns. And if they get a little, you know, too.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Gruff as it were.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
They're the little baby goat yoga, baby goats. But yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
Well, if they were baby cows, I might be okay
with that.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
No, they all smell the same.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Look, you can't have one without the other, you know.
cows humans goats it's all yoga anyway if you want
to read more about this because somebody should start one
of these uh yoga places out in uh i don't
know poolsville or maybe across the river out there past

that a lot of Americans aren't even sure what the
holiday's about.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
I'll explain in just a few.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
Yo, Nick and Kevin coming to town at the end
of September.
Speaker 2 (08:44):

97.1 WASH FM, Washington.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
An iHeartRadio station. Coming up on Top Stories, top of
the hour.
Speaker 5 (09:02):
Crossing guards are back at 11 Fairfax County high schools today.
We've got the latest on that story and others on
the way with Toby and Chili in the morning on
97.1 Wash FM.
Speaker 6 (09:18):
Top stories, top of the hour.
Speaker 5 (09:20):
The president is warning of devastating consequences if Iran retaliates
after U.S. Central Command launched fresh airstrikes on Iranian targets yesterday,
saying Iran's Revolutionary Guard had been targeting shipping and U.S.
Speaker 4 (09:34):
Troops in the region.
Speaker 5 (09:36):
Crossing guards are back at 11 Fairfax County high schools.
This after a car hit a 16-year-old walking to South
Lakes High School yesterday morning. The teen was not seriously hurt,
but police say the crash happened... at an entrance that
never had a guard, and by dismissal yesterday, one was
back on the post. Car thefts are up 22% in
(09:57):
Montgomery County this year, even as they drop nationwide. Police
blame tech-savvy thieves cloning key fob signals and say that
instructions are spreading fast on social media. The National Park
Service has shut down stretches of the National Mall between
3rd and 14th Streets for months of turf and tree repairs.
The closures all started yesterday, and they will run through
(10:20):
January 24th.
Speaker 4 (10:22):
D.C.
Speaker 5 (10:22):
's new pro volleyball team finally has a name, the D.C.
Speaker 4 (10:27):
Flight. It's set to take the court.
Speaker 5 (10:29):
For the first season in 2027, playing in a non-traditional D.C.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
Venue.
Speaker 5 (10:34):
While the team's colors and logo will debut later this month.
And a new survey finds a lot of Americans are
pretty fuzzy on Labor Day.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
Only two-thirds knew.
Speaker 5 (10:45):
It falls on September 7th this year, and about one
in five think it honors the founding of labor unions. Now,
for the record, it actually celebrates the contributions of American workers.
Forecast today, partly cloudy with a chance of a thunderstorm.
Speaker 4 (11:00):
Highs around 90.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
That heat index near 100.
Speaker 4 (11:03):
Right now, 75 in Lorton.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
That's the news. Toby and Tilly in the morning.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
Top stories at the top of the hour coming up.
One of your talkbacks. This was interesting. Wait until you hear.
this message that we were left. That's still to come
this morning.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Good morning.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
And Bowie have a safe trip to Annapolis on 50.
It's 97.1.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
Wash up.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
Then we're tell me in Chile in the morning, we
get talk back messages. And this morning we got an
interesting one.
Speaker 5 (11:35):
So Lacey in Germantown was sharing a little parenting debate.
Speaker 4 (11:39):
She's having, Hey guys, I will listen to you all
the time.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
I love your show. They get fans, but I have
a little debate for you.
Speaker 6 (11:46):
I know you guys like to do great debates.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
My husband and I are trying to figure out what
we should do.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
He wants to pay the kids for good grades.
Speaker 4 (11:54):
And I'm like, absolutely not. Do we pay kids for
good grades now? Is that what we do?
Speaker 2 (11:58):
Sounds like a good idea to the former student in me.
Speaker 5 (12:03):
Did you incentivize.
Speaker 4 (12:05):
Your daughter, by the way?
Speaker 3 (12:06):
No, I didn't really need to because she was pretty motivated,
you know, and then when the pandemia hit, she pumped
the gas, skipped a grade and then graduated early.
Speaker 5 (12:15):
So So I think if your child doesn't have that self-motivation,
incentives are not a bad idea. So for me, it's
a case by case basis. And by the way, it
kind of does prepare you for the real world, because
in the real world, you do get bonuses for achieving
certain goals.
Speaker 4 (12:29):
Right. So it's not that far off.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
Upon reason and belief, you would incentivize your son with
with cash. You would pay him for grades.
Speaker 5 (12:38):
Money doesn't speak to him, but something else might.
Speaker 4 (12:40):
And yes, I'm a big fan of incentivizing.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
Here comes Maya in D.C. Good morning, Maya. Pay the
kids for the grades. What do you think?
Speaker 8 (12:48):
Oh, that's a tricky one, because when I was growing up,
if I got a good report card, my grandpa used
to give me a dollar.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
Seems to me things might have been a bit simpler
back then.
Speaker 5 (12:57):
You know what?
Speaker 8 (12:57):
I think in today's current day and age, there's really
no reason to do that anymore. I know that might
sound crazy. You know, kids already have a lot going
for them. And I think just giving them an incentive
to have good grades, they should be able to do
that on their own. They shouldn't need an incentive to
want to learn, get good grades and, you know, become
(13:17):
more knowledgeable.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
You're right.
Speaker 5 (13:19):
They should want to learn, but it's a lot harder
for those who are in like elementary or middle school
to understand the importance.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
Facts. Maya, thank you for jumping in this morning.
Speaker 7 (13:29):
866-927-4361.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
So the debate is on this morning. Should we be
paying our kids for good grades?
Speaker 2 (13:38):
Yes. No, there is no right or wrong opinion.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
We just want to hear your opinion because you are
a part of the conversation this morning. Things decent on
Route 7 at Falls Church?
Speaker 5 (13:49):
Good.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
Thanks for waking up with Toby and Tilly in the morning,
97.1 Wash FM. So this morning, we're talking about a
talkback message that we received. And by the way, if
you ever have anything on your mind that you need
us to help with, hit us with a quick talkback.
It's easy if you're signed into your iHeart app.
Speaker 5 (14:05):
Lacey left us the message. Basically, she and her husband
are debating whether to pay their kids for good grades.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
Pretty sure they're not the only family in the DMV
having that discussion as we send the kids back to
school over the last couple of weeks. It's 97.1 Wash
FM at 866-927-4361 to get into the conversation. Becca in
Centerville paying kids for grades.
Speaker 7 (14:29):
So when I was a kid, my parents paid me
to get like to get good grades. And now I
feel like I have a complex. No, absolutely do not pay.
Speaker 4 (14:37):
Your kids for that. Can you explain what you mean
by complex?
Speaker 7 (14:40):
For me, I feel like what's what do they call
it today? Like the gifted kid thing. You know what
I mean? Or like I'm really good at everything. And
I feel like because I knew that I could get
money for that, like I wasn't focused on.
Speaker 4 (14:51):
Like the learning part.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
Right.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
I was focused on.
Speaker 7 (14:53):
Like, oh, let me make sure that my grades are good.
so I can get something from it. And so that
like put a lot of pressure on me and stuff.
I wouldn't wish that on anybody. And like I was
a kid, so of course I didn't understand the complexity.
Speaker 4 (15:05):
Of that at the time.
Speaker 7 (15:06):
But now that I'm dealing with it as an adult,
I'm like, oh yeah, I wish that like that hadn't
happened to me.
Speaker 4 (15:11):
Well, thank you so much for sharing your perspective with us. Yeah,
of course.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
Big Eric and Aka Keek paying kids for grades. You
think it's a good idea?
Speaker 2 (15:20):
I think it's a great idea. Tell them you.
Speaker 5 (15:22):
Want me to do something.
Speaker 7 (15:23):
I need cash.
Speaker 5 (15:26):
Hold on now. Let's not get it twisted. You're not
going to get paid to do things that are expected,
all right?
Speaker 3 (15:31):
I don't know, Chili. Cash rules everything around me.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Yeah, teach them early. Dollar, dollar bill, y'all.
Speaker 4 (15:39):
Not in this economy.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
Well, maybe someday. Someday. You got it.
Speaker 3 (15:45):
Top stories at the top of the hour on the
way right around 710 this morning.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
Chili, what's going on?
Speaker 5 (15:51):
A new survey finds that most Americans now identify as
working class. I've got the details in just a few.
Speaker 3 (15:59):
Hopefully, 95 North won't be too jammed as you make
your way to Philadelphia and see Ed Sheeran. Toby and

36% of people have done this activity on a date.

What is it?

It's 97.1 Wash FM.
Speaker 6 (19:22):
Toby and Chili's Nearly Impossible Question.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
Let's get the question again this morning.
Speaker 5 (19:26):
36% of people have done this with their partner on
a date.
Speaker 4 (19:31):
What is it? It's an activity. Tell us what it is.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
Keep it clean, little ears.
Speaker 3 (19:38):
You want to go see Ed Sheeran? Thanks to AEG,
we've got tickets. You could go to Philly and check
him out at the link if you can answer that
question correctly keith good morning where.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
Do you live in laurel maryland.
Speaker 3 (19:53):
I sometimes forget that welcome back keith uh for the
tickets to see ed sheeran philadelphia which guess i.
Speaker 5 (20:00):
Think it's go to a movie Ooh, I think a
lot more than 36% go to a movie.
Speaker 4 (20:05):
Unfortunately, that's not our answer today.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
But you know you'll try again tomorrow. Good luck.
Speaker 1 (20:11):
Thank you. Y'all have a good day.
Speaker 4 (20:12):
You too, Keith.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
Thank you. And what's your name and where are you from?
Speaker 4 (20:17):
Hi, I'm Alex from Rockville, Maryland.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
Hello, Alex.
Speaker 4 (20:23):
What is your guess?
Speaker 1 (20:25):
Doing a cooking class.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
Well, Alex.
Speaker 5 (20:29):
Have you ever gone on a date for a cooking class?
It's a really nice couples thing to do.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
It's sur la table. How do you say that?
Speaker 4 (20:36):
Sur la table.
Speaker 2 (20:37):
That thing. Yeah, that place.
Speaker 4 (20:39):
Have you tried it?
Speaker 1 (20:41):
I haven't, but my husband and I do like to
cook together.
Speaker 8 (20:44):
Oh.
Speaker 5 (20:45):
Well, you should definitely take a cooking class together, especially
because 36% of people have taken a cooking class together.
Speaker 4 (20:52):
On a date. So that makes it the right answer.
Congrats to you.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
And you don't need to cook.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
I'd go out to dinner in Philadelphia when you and
maybe your husband or whomever you want to take, go
to see Ed Sheeran at the link.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
Congratulations.
Speaker 4 (21:06):
Oh, that's so exciting. Thank you so much.
Speaker 3 (21:09):
Prepare a road trip. Tell your husband to stay at
the Lowe's downtown. It's really a great hotel. I love it.
And I think you will, too.
Speaker 4 (21:17):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 5 (21:18):
I'm so excited.
Speaker 3 (21:19):
You're so welcome. Enjoy the show. Thanks for listening to
us in Rockville. Tell your husband we said hi and
have a great day on purpose. All right.
Speaker 5 (21:27):
You too.
Speaker 2 (21:28):
And be here.
Speaker 3 (21:29):
Tomorrow morning right around 7, 10 for another chance to
plan with tickets.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
Ed Sheeran in Philly.
Speaker 3 (21:34):
Thanks to AEG with another round of your nearly impossible question.
Speaker 2 (21:38):
And hang out because... We're going to talk.
Speaker 5 (21:40):
About the most searched slang terms so we can all
learn something together.
Speaker 3 (21:46):
How well versed are you in all things slang? Good
morning in Rockville and good luck getting to work downtown
this morning. It's 97.1 Wash FM, Toby and Chili in
the morning. Thanks to our friends at Word Unscrambler, we've
got a list of the top 10 most searched slang terms, Chili.
Speaker 5 (22:04):
I have an almost 13-year-old, and you have an adult daughter,
but you and I still are learning from them a
whole new vocabulary on a regular basis. So I kind
of looked at this real quick, and I will tell
you right off the bat, I did not know what
LARPing meant.
Speaker 2 (22:19):
Oh, you didn't?
Speaker 3 (22:20):
The only reason I know what LARPing is is because
I watched Hawkeye. You know, one of the Avengers. Yeah,
he had his own show on Disney Plus and he
needed some help from the LARPers.
Speaker 4 (22:29):
So what is it?
Speaker 2 (22:30):
Well, it's when you dress up and you really get
into role playing. Kind of like Think the Renaissance.
Speaker 4 (22:34):
Got it. Like Renven people are LARPing.
Speaker 2 (22:37):
They're LARPers.
Speaker 4 (22:38):
I did know that Riz was short for charisma.
Speaker 5 (22:41):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (22:41):
So I get credit for that.
Speaker 2 (22:42):
Did you know what mog is?
Speaker 5 (22:44):
I did not know mogging is trying to outperform or
outshine somebody.
Speaker 1 (22:49):
Me neither.
Speaker 2 (22:49):
We are so deficient. We're not supposed to. to our slang.
Speaker 4 (22:54):
We're not supposed to know.
Speaker 2 (22:55):
Did you know what Sigma is?
Speaker 4 (22:56):
Absolutely did not know what that was.
Speaker 3 (22:58):
A self-assured, independent, and driven person portrayed as a lone wolf.
Let's use that in a sentence like we're at the
Spelling Bee. That Toby Knapp, he can be a bit
of a Sigma. This one I feel like is kind
of self-explanatory.
Speaker 4 (23:11):
A bop. It's like a catchy song.
Speaker 5 (23:13):
Sure.
Speaker 7 (23:13):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (23:14):
I could probably, if they used it in a sentence,
figure that one out.
Speaker 3 (23:18):
I feel like bop was really big in the U.K., Yes.
And then it made its way over here. And now
all of a sudden we feel like we're, I don't know, cultured.
Speaker 4 (23:26):
And mom and dad, you don't want your kid to
ever be a chud. That's a loser.
Speaker 5 (23:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (23:31):
No chuds around these parts.
Speaker 2 (23:34):
This list will blow your mind.
Speaker 3 (23:36):
Is there any sort of slang that maybe you've encountered
that didn't make this list? Talkback's wide open. Feel free
to leave us a message. It's always good to hear
from you. And stay with us because as Toby and

Speaker 3 (30:41):
From Toni Morrison, Chili. Toni Morrison reminds us that you
are your best thing. You, yes, you, you are your
best thing. And this basically means that, you know what?
Speaker 2 (30:55):
Yes, it's true. We do.
Speaker 3 (30:56):
You protect your time. We protect our families. We protect
our work. We protect everybody we love. But there's something very,
very valuable you can't lose sight of protecting. And it's
worth protecting. It's you. So keep that in mind today
and protect yourself. Who else is going to do it?
Have a great day. We'll talk to you in the morning.
