Speaker 1 (00:00):
Toby and Chili mornings on demand on 97.1 wash.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
FM and the DMV reboot begins in earnest after the
holiday weekend. It's 97.1 wash FM. My name is we
nap over there is Chilean Mar. Thank you for getting
your day started with us and Ashburn today. Why are
you feeling good? coming off this holiday weekend. No, it's
not a loaded question. There's always a reason to feel
(00:26):
good at 6, 6, 9, 2, 7, 43, 61.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
We planned to go to the community pool before it
closed and we followed through with said plans. So we
never quite got our money's worth this season. We never
seem to really, because we only go on weekends. But yeah,
it was lovely. It was lovely.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
I am feeling good because I said, No, I really
don't know if I want to go to Secrets in
Ocean City.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
You were invited to go to Secrets?
Speaker 2 (01:00):
With some of our colleagues.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
Oh, my.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
They were out there doing their little Labor Day thing.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Yes, yes.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
And I'm like, well, that might be fun.
Speaker 5 (01:10):
No.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
No.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
I have no desire. I was feeling a little something
coming on.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
I was going to say you were, you were, you're
still fighting a little something, something you're getting over it,
but yeah, you were wise not to go. Cause I
bet you would have gotten worse.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
I'd be really, really bad. You know, when you get
around that many people, you know, I mean, even though
it's outdoors.
Speaker 4 (01:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
There are certain things that are still things all these
years after that whole global thing we don't speak of anymore, but,
I'm glad that I chose to stay home, bed rot,
do some stuff around the house and experience the DMV
within five to ten miles of where I live. You
know what? I labor enough.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
Oh, my goodness.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
That's right. Why are you feeling good this morning? Go ahead.
You're shaking it off just like the rest of us.
Hit us up and let us know. In the meantime,
here comes the news. Your first look at the morning
as we start what is at least a short new week. Chili,
what's going on?
Speaker 3 (02:05):
Canada's new tariffs on billions of dollars in American goods
are now in effect. I've got some more details on
that coming up in just a few.
Speaker 6 (02:16):
Top stories, top of the hour.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Canada's new tariffs on billions of dollars in American goods
are now in effect, escalating the trade fight with the U.S.
The tariffs kicked in just after midnight and range anywhere
from 15 to 50 percent, targeting everything from steel and
dairy to appliances and electronics. A 16,000-pound steel beam from
(02:39):
the World Trade Center is going to be going on
display at the White House today as the nation prepares
to mark 25 years since 9-11. The Tunnel to Towers
Steel Across America tour is bringing the beam to the Ellipse,
where the president will welcome first responders. Montgomery County Councilmember
and Democratic County Executive nominee Will Jawando suffered a heart attack.
(03:03):
This happened on Saturday while he was playing basketball. The
43-year-old was hospitalized and doctors placed a stent and his
office says he is expected to recover. Metro is getting
ready to resume full red line service after summer construction
between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights wrapped up over the weekend.
(03:24):
So you can start using that red line today. Officials
say that the critical infrastructure improvements will benefit riders for decades.
Thousands of people lined the streets of Kensington for the
town's 59th annual Labor Day parade yesterday. The longtime tradition
featured marching bands, floats, community groups, and plenty of spectators
who were celebrating the holiday together. And Walmart is teaming
(03:46):
up with Dunkin' to bring coffee, breakfast, and other menu
items right to Walmart's app and website. The service starts
with 150 locations inside Walmart stores, and then it's going
to be expanding nationwide. Forecast today, sunny skies, highs around 86.
Right now, 62 in Greenbelt.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Tuesday morning, now that you got the news with Toby
and Tilly's top stories here at 97.1 Wash FM Hangout,
because we're going to take a second to talk about
you and how you're coping on this Tuesday morning as
we reboot after the long holiday weekend. Your morning mindsets,
it'll help. Washington's variety from the 80s, 90s and today
(04:27):
all morning at 97.1 Wash FM with Toby and Chili
in the morning. And now it's time for us to
take a moment to reflect on what you're going through
right now with a quote that we hope might help you.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
It's our morning mindset on this Tuesday. It feels like
a Monday. Perhaps you need it more than ever. So
what you got?
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Amen to that. We all need it. Malala Yousafzai says,
we realize the importance of our voices only when we
are silenced. We realize the importance of our voices only
when we are silenced. Now, it's not a political message
or phrase. It's a life phrase. It's a life phrase
(05:09):
that reminds us through this young woman to say the
thing that matters in life. You know, your voice deserves more,
I think, than permanent residence inside your head. So speak
your truth, whatever that might be. Say that thing that matters.
You'll be happy that you did. Say, and we realize
(05:31):
the importance of our voices only when we are silenced. Malala,
thank you. And if you were moved and you need
to share that with someone who might want it, find
it on our socials. Or hit us up at the
Toby and Chili page at watchfm.com. We'd be happy to
send it your way. On this Tuesday morning, hang out
for just a bit because we talking.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
Do you think you have your life together? Currently, there
are some signs that will prove that you indeed do
or do not.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
Yeah, wait till you hear this.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
You have your life together?
Speaker 4 (06:02):
Hmm, really?
Speaker 2 (06:04):
Maybe not. 97.1 Watch FM. We're Toby and Chili in
the morning. I honestly ask myself that question every morning
when I look myself in the mirror.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
You know what really bums me out is the research
suggests the bar may be lower than we think. And
then I looked at the list of things. I'm a
little worried about you and I.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Why is that? That we're not together?
Speaker 3 (06:25):
We may not be. So it starts out fine. Being
financially responsible. I think we both are. Well, you more
so than me, I will tell you. There are a
lot of decisions I would reconsider.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
Okay. But for the most part, I'm like that little
fish in Finding Nemo. Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
We both, I think, enjoy our own company because that's
another sign.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Yeah, I am okay with being alone if I need
to be.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Admitting when you're wrong.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Got to.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
I definitely have no problem doing that. Okay.
Speaker 5 (06:54):
Saying no without feeling guilty. It took me a long time.
I'm still working on it.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
What about you?
Speaker 3 (07:00):
I'm getting better, but I can't say that I'm there yet.
Not paying for subscriptions you don't use anymore.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
Speaker 3 (07:08):
Again, my husband, thank God, keeps us more on track
than I do.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Well, I need one of those people in my life.
Wait a minute, I have one. I just don't choose
to listen.
Speaker 5 (07:16):
Being aware of when your trash day is. Fortunately, that's
every day for me. What about you?
Speaker 3 (07:23):
Yeah, I do know when our trash and recycling day are.
Those are two separate days in my little neighborhood, and
I do know. But here's where I fail big time,
and I have an excuse. Making your bed every day. See,
I can't make my bed every day because my husband
leaves after me. So he's in charge of making the bed.
What about you?
Speaker 2 (07:41):
I have no comment. I plead the fifth.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
Well, maybe I do have my life together more than
you do, but still not completely.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
Come on now. You don't make your bed every day.
Your husband does.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
I would if I if I was. Oh, that's my point. Oh,
I don't like it when it's wide open.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
No, I don't like my bed's a disaster area right now.
I'm just telling you, it looks like it looks like
the freaking Appalachian Mountains with all the sheets just all
thrown all over the place. That's funny. What do you
think about your life? Do you have your life together
in 2026? Yes or no? Or is it a work
in progress? If you want to speak out, there's that
(08:18):
talkback microphone on your iHeart app. You can tap speak
and send if you want to. Always fun to hear
what you think about the things we talk about. Now,
stay with us because top stories at the top of
the hour on the way. What you working on, Chili?
Speaker 3 (08:30):
The secret to getting your doctor to respond to your
patient portal message may all come down to the way
you write it. There's actually one specific word that will
help you, and I'll share what that is coming up
in just a few.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
It's not too early to start planning for the weekend.
I know the week's just getting started. 97.1 Wash FM.
But if you're looking for something to do with the
family this coming weekend.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
Well, also September 1st, this all started. The corn maze
and apple harvest at Great Country Farms in Bluemont. There's
apple picking, of course, a huge 12 acre play area.
So much to do. the best part about.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
This season 97.1 washfm washington an iheart radio station coming
up on top stories top of the.
Speaker 3 (09:15):
Hour canada has imposed new tariffs of up to 50
on billions of dollars in american goods i've got the
latest on that story and others on the way with
toby and chili in the morning on 97.1 wash fm.
Speaker 6 (09:33):
Top stories, top of the hour.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
Canada has imposed new tariffs of up to 50% on
billions of dollars in American goods. They took effect overnight,
targeting steel, farm equipment, electronics, and paper products. Canada says
it's in retaliation for the president's 50% tariffs on Canadian goods.
One person has died after a shooting at the Addison
Road metro station in Prince George's County yesterday. Police say
(09:58):
two men exchanged gunfire after an argument outside the station
one man died at a hospital and investigators are still
searching for the other shooter two drivers are facing reckless
driving charges after a fiery crash on 66 in fairfax
county killed three people sunday Police say a Honda Pilot
slammed into a truck that was carrying oxygen tanks and
(10:20):
then burst into flames. The drivers of the truck and
a Toyota 4Runner were charged. Police are searching for a
driver after a hit-and-run in Woodbridge last week. A man
and a pregnant woman were hit by a dark-colored pickup
while they were crossing or rather walking through a parking lot.
The woman's baby died shortly after an emergency delivery. A
(10:43):
twin-engine plane made an emergency landing at Montgomery County Air
Park in Gaithersburg yesterday after it developed problems with its
nose gear. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. And you want
your doctor to answer your patient portal message? Well, researchers
found that if you greet the doctor by their last name,
you get more replies. Messages with multiple question marks and
(11:04):
100 to 200 words also had higher response rates. Forecast
for today, we'll have sunny skies, highs around 86. Right now,
63 in McLean.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
Feels good to be up to speed, doesn't it? It's
97.1 Wash FM. Toby and Chili in the morning. In
just a bit, we're going to talk about something new.
It's called speed room mating. Have you heard of this?
Think speed dating only minus the date. You'll understand in
just a few. And this might even make you raise
one or two eyebrows. You've heard of speed dating. Let's
(11:39):
talk about speed room mating this morning. 97.1 Wash FM.
We are Toby and Chili in the morning. And this
comes from the New York Post, Chili. I guess people
in their 40s and 50s and 60s are attending monthly
speed room mating events. Kind of like speed dating, only
(11:59):
no dating.
Speaker 4 (12:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
People wear name tags. They list their budget on the
name tags, the neighborhood they live in, and whether they
want a roommate or a tenant.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
Well, because these older groups are growing faster than the
younger groups because more older people just can't afford to
live alone. loan or buy a place, which makes me
sad that you get into your 40s, 50s and 60s
and you're shopping around for tenants or roommates at these events.
And look, even if I was in that position where
I needed a roommate, I don't really feel comfortable doing
(12:32):
it this way, like a speed roommateing where you just
spending a few minutes with each person, kind of getting
doing a vibe check, asking a few questions for compatibility,
because living with somebody is very different than going on
a date.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Yeah, no, no, no kidding.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
That's like next level commitment to a human.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
But I will say that there is, I think, a
bit of something to the idea of speed room mating
minus the speed. You know what I mean? Like if
you have a really close friend or, you know, you're
you're you're. Yes.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
I want to know the person personally.
Speaker 5 (13:02):
Right.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
Not going to these stranger events to hopefully meet somebody.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
Yeah, I don't know how I feel about that and
having that person around all my stuff and whatnot. No,
I don't know. But I do know that I would
probably if I had, you know, like three or four friends.
We all pitch in on someplace really big and nice
and Potomac. And, you know, hey, many hands make light
work when it comes to the rent. But I would
have to know them well.
Speaker 5 (13:27):
Mm-hmm.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
So thoughts on this speed room mating? Would it be
a thing you'd consider? What are you doing right now?
You're grabbing the phone and you're calling us at 866-927-4361.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
Or you can actually call us with any roommate horror stories,
which is what prevents you from doing such a thing
because you never want to get yourself into that situation again.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
We're talking. So you call now and join the conversation.
Circling back on our chat about speed room mating. It's
replacing speed dating 97.1. Watch FM Toby and Chili in
the morning. The idea is that people of a certain
age over 40, between like 40, 50, 60. They're going
to these events to find potential roommates or perhaps maybe
(14:10):
tenants to cohabitate with in order to bring the price
of living, the cost of living down. Because guess what?
Everything is more expensive these days.
Speaker 3 (14:19):
But I think a lot of people are kind of
nervous about doing that because if you've ever had a
roommate horror story... You're a bit apprehensive about sharing your
living space with somebody.
Speaker 2 (14:30):
And Miranda in Glover Park, D.C. has had this experience.
Good morning.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
Oh, I had a horrible roommate.
Speaker 6 (14:39):
She was dirty.
Speaker 4 (14:41):
And I swear there was a different guy every day.
I didn't know who I was going to wake up.
Speaker 6 (14:45):
To in my dorm room.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
Oh, the college roommate experience. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (14:49):
So, I mean, it's a little bit different, I hope,
when you get to be over 40 that you don't
have a rotating person coming into your roommate's life.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
It's like six, seven, six, seven. It's like, okay. There's 18, 19, 20,
and then there's 40, 50, 60. I mean, come on.
But thanks for jumping in, Miranda. Have a great morning today.
And over in Reston near Lake Anne, Katie, you've got
a roommate tale to tell. Oh, yeah.
Speaker 4 (15:19):
I've actually had quite a few roommates just because of them.
Speaker 6 (15:22):
Not working out very well.
Speaker 2 (15:24):
Really?
Speaker 3 (15:24):
What happened?
Speaker 6 (15:25):
My first roommate, whenever I would leave, she would wear
my clothes and then post pictures of herself on Facebook
wearing my clothes.
Speaker 4 (15:32):
And then would never admit to doing so, even though
I had that evidence.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
Yeah, if you want to wear something of mine, you've
got to ask me first. Don't you dare help yourself
to my closet.
Speaker 2 (15:46):
Yeah, no bueno. Got to respect some space. Thank you, Katie,
for the call this morning. Have a great day and
enjoy your Tuesday if you can. We're Toby and Chili
in the morning. If you've got thoughts and you feel
like you want to jump into the conversation, but maybe
you don't have time right now. When you get a second,
tap the talkback microphone. If you're signed in listening on
your iHeart app, you'll see it right there. And tell
(16:07):
us your thoughts and stay right there because we got
some news coming up for you. Top stories at the
top of the hour, right around 710. What's going on
this morning?
Speaker 3 (16:16):
A 16,000 pound steel beam from the World Trade Center
is going to be going on display at the White
House today. I've got the latest on that story coming
up in just a few minutes.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
97.1 WASH-FM, Washington.
Speaker 6 (16:29):
An iHeartRadio station. Coming up on Top Stories, top of

are now in effect. I've got the latest on that
story and others on the way. With Toby and Chili

Speaker 6 (16:48):
Top stories, top of the hour.
Speaker 3 (16:50):
Canada's new tariffs on billions of dollars in American goods
are now in effect, escalating the trade fight with the U.S.
Tariffs kicked in just after midnight and ranged from 15
to 50 percent and targets everything from steel and dairy
to appliances and electronics. Three people died after a fiery
crash that happened on 66 in Fairfax County Sunday afternoon.
(17:13):
Virginia State Police say a Honda pilot slammed into a
truck That was stopped in the right lane. A Toyota
4Runner was also involved. Two drivers face reckless driving charges.
A construction worker is recovering after he was injured at
the White House. First responders found the worker on a
scaffolding along the north side of the building yesterday. No
(17:35):
details on the injuries have been released. Montgomery County Council
Member and Democratic County Executive Nominee Will Jawando suffered a
heart attack Saturday while he was playing basketball. The 43-year-old
was hospitalized and doctors placed a stent, and his office
says he's expected to make a full recovery. Several northwest D.C.
(17:56):
streets are closed this morning as a 16,000-pound steel beam
from the World Trade Center goes on display at the
White House. It will be at the Ellipse, where the
president is expected to speak, and closures should be ending
around 1.30 this afternoon. So you should all go outside
and touch some grass. A new survey finds that nearly 45%
(18:19):
of Americans spent less than two hours in nature last week.
Researchers say even 10 minutes outdoors can boost mood and
reduce stress. Forecast today, lots of sunshine to get outside.
Highs around 86. Right now, 64 in Temple Hills.
Speaker 6 (18:39):
Toby and Chili's Nearly Impossible Question.
Speaker 2 (18:42):
What is the Tuesday morning question, please?
Speaker 3 (18:45):
42% of people frown upon others who put ketchup on this.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
What is it? Oh, boy. 866-927-4361 is the number. You'll
go see Usher and Chris Brown in Minty Bank Stadium
in October. If you can answer that question correctly, call
us right now and take a guess. Here's the question again.
Speaker 6 (19:04):
42% of people....
Speaker 3 (19:06):
Frown upon others who place ketchup on this. What is it?
Speaker 2 (19:10):
All right. You think you know the answer? You want
to go see Usher, Chris Brown? 866-927-4361. Call now. Get
it right.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
Win.
Speaker 6 (19:21):
Toby and Chili's Nearly Impossible Question.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
Usher and Chris Brown tickets, him and T-Bank Stadium. They're
up for grabs right now. The question again, in case
you missed it, is... 42%.
Speaker 3 (19:30):
Of people frown upon others who place ketchup on this.
What is it?
Speaker 2 (19:36):
866-927-4361 is the number. Good morning. What's your name and
where are you from?
Speaker 6 (19:42):
Hi, this is Didi from Charlestown, West Virginia.
Speaker 2 (19:45):
Home of the races and slots, Didi.
Speaker 4 (19:47):
Welcome.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
You've got the question for the tickets to see... Usher
and Chris Brown. What's your guess?
Speaker 6 (19:52):
Is it a hot dog?
Speaker 3 (19:53):
What do you think belongs on it? Like mustard instead?
Speaker 6 (19:55):
I like mustard and onions or mustard and sauerkraut.
Speaker 3 (19:59):
You know, it's a good guess, but it's not the
correct one today.
Speaker 5 (20:04):
Okay. Thank you.
Speaker 2 (20:05):
Well, you should have said something about a chili dog
with some cheese, extra cheese slathered all over that dog.
Hey there, what's your name and where are you from? Hi,
this is Connie from Fairfax, Virginia. Hello, Connie. Welcome. You've
got the question. What's your guess?
Speaker 6 (20:19):
I'm going to go with fries.
Speaker 3 (20:21):
What's wrong with putting ketchup on fries?
Speaker 6 (20:25):
There's nothing wrong with it.
Speaker 3 (20:26):
I love putting ketchup on fries, but I'm just thinking
of all the other people who might not want to
put ketchup on their fries.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
They got a problem they need to talk to a
therapist about then.
Speaker 3 (20:38):
It's not our answer today, but please try again tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (20:41):
I will.
Speaker 6 (20:41):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
Thank you for listening to us. Have a safe day today.
And what's your name and where are you from?
Speaker 3 (20:47):
Natasha from Bryantown.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
For these tickets to see Usher and Chris Brown, what's
your guess?
Speaker 3 (20:53):
Is it steak? Are you guilty of putting ketchup on
your steak?
Speaker 6 (20:57):
Absolutely not.
Speaker 3 (20:59):
Really?
Speaker 2 (21:00):
Don't knock it till you've tried it.
Speaker 3 (21:03):
I think I'll pass on that one.
Speaker 2 (21:04):
Ketchup's the OG steak sauce, ma'am.
Speaker 3 (21:07):
A good steak don't need it.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
That's true too. Exactly.
Speaker 3 (21:11):
Well, that's an excellent guess. And 42% of people frown
upon others who place ketchup on steak is the correct answer.
Speaker 2 (21:18):
Oh, So get ready for Usher and Chris Brown, M &
T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. Tickets are yours.
Speaker 3 (21:27):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
All right, and we got more tickets for you to
go see Usher and Chris Brown tomorrow morning when you
get up, you play, and you win right around 7-10
with another round of your Nearly Impossible Question. And stay
right there because next with Toby and Chili in the morning.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
Sadly, Labor Day marked the unofficial end of summer. But
we want to know, what was the highlight of your summer?
866-927-4361 to join the conversation.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Summertime has come and gone the living was easy but
now it's over toby and chili in the morning it's
97.1 wash fm i almost want to ask if there's
anything on your summertime bucket list that you didn't get
to cross off this summer and what that might have
been but we.
Speaker 3 (22:16):
Want to keep it positive Yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:17):
You know, why worry about the things you didn't get done?
Let's worry about what you did do, the stuff that
will define the summer of 2026 now that it's gone.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
There's always a highlight. It may not be what you
imagined it would be. I thought maybe my highlight would
come from one of our beach trips, but no, it wasn't.
It was when I took a quick little weekend trip
to visit my cousin in Brooklyn. Just me visiting him
and staying at his really cute apartment. And it was
just a wonderful two days of hanging with him and

Speaker 2 (23:06):
This has been an interesting summer for me, just like
it's been an interesting year, because I've been healing for
the most part of the year, and that included most
of the summer. However... One of the only times and
one of the first times that I actually got out
was over the summer when one of our work colleagues
and I went to see a musical Beetlejuice at the
(23:29):
National Theater. And I remember heading down there and thinking
to myself, this is wonderful. One of the first times
I've really been out just to go do it was
kind of an accomplishment.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
Yeah, that's great. A healing highlight. That's a good thing.
Speaker 4 (23:44):
Right.

best friends get married.
Speaker 6 (23:55):
And then a week later, my other best friend had
her first baby.
Speaker 3 (23:59):
Wow, that's a lot of milestones in your circle. Very
exciting in our friend group. Leslie, it is very exciting,
as long as those friends of yours don't start pressuring
you to get married or have babies.
Speaker 2 (24:09):
That's when you need to tell them to go pound sand.
