Speaker 1 (00:05):
Welcome to NFL Daily, where we're really trying to believe
there's no such thing as a Chargers curse. I'm Greg Rosenthal.
I'm here in the Chris Westling podcast studio. This is
your August eighteenth, Tuesday Camp Buzz.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
With Nick Shook.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
We get you updated on all the latest news from
all thirty two training camps. And I hate starting with
another Chargers injury.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
I was trying to.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Ignore it, Nick, as I saw the injury lists for
the Chargers grow and grow a little more and grow
a little more. Didn't know if anyone were serious. We
weren't going to talk about it. But on Tuesday they're
starting center Tyler Biattish, who was kind of the centerpiece
of a lot of their hopes on the offensive line,
was carted off with what appears to be a serious injury.
(00:51):
And I can no longer ignore that the Chargers are
unfortunately charging again in August, which just means a lot
of injuries.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Yeah, and it's probably it affects the worst portion of
this team given their history with offensive line injuries. It
also comes at a very I mean, it's always unfortunate,
but it's especially unfortunate because Jim Harbaugh had legitimately just
said that him that Biadash and Justin Herbert were going
to play a little bit in their next preseason game
because he wanted them to get reps together in live action. Well,
that's off the table because of things like this. But
(01:20):
that's also just how precarious training camp can be. It
can be a very fickle thing where one minute you
think you're on track for all these good things, the
next minute you're losing your starting center for who knows
how long.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Yeah, just the video of the injury. This was part
of a joint practice with the forty nine ers. Other
players were injured during the practice. But it does it
does not look good, and that is such a difficult
position to fill, especially for this Chargers team. So we'll
see what kind of adjustments that they want to make
to their starting lineup. When I said, I've been ignoring
(01:53):
some of the injury reports, like Trey Harris the receiver,
as in practice in a few days, a key messator
who's had a great camp hasn't been practicing. There's been
Quentin Johnston hasn't been practicing a lot. And then he
did return to practice for this joint practice, and then
left it hobbling. Rayshon Slater is the most important one
of that entire group coming back from a really serious injury,
(02:16):
and he's been out for a couple of weeks now.
Jim Harbaugh did say they expect Slater back sometime around
this weekend. So there's a little bit of good news.
And if you wanted some other good news, reportedly Justin
Herbert was out there putting on a show. So you know,
one injury does not ruin an off season of optimism
about Mike McDaniel and Justin Herbert together. And so I'm
(02:39):
going to try to stay optimistic. And it's gonna be hard, Nick,
because the way we've structured this show, we're just going
to start with all the injury updates first and then
get to the rest later. Mike Evans quietly hasn't been
able to put together many back to back practices at
forty nine ers camp, and he left this practice too,
and they're pretty thin at wide receiver, and now it's
(03:00):
starting to get a little on my radar that we've
always assumed Mike Evans is going to be healthy. Last
year was a little bit of a fluke injury, but
he struggled to stay on the field this camp as well.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
Yeah, he's had been dealing with quad injury. He had
a history of hamstring issues, you know. More recently he
had broken his collarbone. The litany of injuries is quite
long with him. And to hear about this which he
had he was had a wrap of you know, ice
after this practice and you know obviously was not participating
through the end of it. It's just not encouraging, especially
(03:29):
for somebody of his age who has been this lee
for a long time, who you know, is destined for
a place in Canton and was seen as a massive
addition to a Ford and Ers offense that already lost
Ricky Petersoll.
Speaker 4 (03:40):
So look, you can.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
Continue with the conspiracies about stub substation as much as
you want, but they weren't even there. No, we're down
you know, a charger's house. Okay, So it's unfortunate.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Maybe that's uh haunted as well.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
I hope nobody posted a picture of a giant like
terminal of of elect like just electric wil like power
lines behind them, like, oh, I see why they.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Have they do have the train going by. I don't
I don't think that can create any issues. It's actually
very scenic to just see the the MTA train, you know,
going by. I got my tap cards. I'm ready to
I want to ride that train to practice one day.
All right, So we'll we'll hit these injuries. We'll hit
a couple of veteran signings. We got Keenan Allen back
(04:21):
in the league, got Von Miller back in the league,
and we'll get everyone you know set for the rest
of the week. But the way I think about these injuries,
if you're drafting in fantasy, for instance, it doesn't mean
you have to panic, but I think it's good to
know about them because a lot of times these injuries,
like Breese Hall's injuries, injury where its positioned is oh,
good news, Briess Hall should be ready for week one.
(04:45):
I look at it more like not the best news.
That bris Hall, you know, suffered a growing injury in practice,
and that's the way his season is going to start,
coming off back to back to back pretty heavy workload seasons.
Especially knowing Aaron Glenn has been very, very optimistic when
it comes to injuries in the pass. He also says
Kenyan Sadek his tight end is going to be ready
for Week one. We'll see either way, a groin strain,
(05:08):
which is a tricky injury, is going to keep Bryce
Preese haul out for the rest of the preseason, much
of camp, and they're hopeful he'll be back out there
against the Titans in Week one.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
Yeah, it was good, you know, it was optimism coming
from Aaron Glenn when the injury happened yesterday. Two to
three weeks is not a terrible, you know, timeline for
a running back. But given the fact that they just
franchised and then paid him and you expect him to
be somebody who's going to produce a thousand yards on
the ground, which he just broke a thousand yards for
the first time last season, it's not the most encouraging thing.
(05:38):
And it also makes you think about your death of
your backfield. They have Braylen Allen coming off of an
injury in that backfield as well, very much a different
style of running back. But so you hope that like, okay, well,
maybe two to three weeks is just like extra time
to heal and really get ready for the regular season.
There's no real reason that he needs to be on
the field during the preseason anyway. But for a team that,
as we've discussed maybe more offensive reliant than they want
(05:59):
to be.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
It's not the news either, No, and it's a groin strain.
It's it's just that it's one of those injuries that
like you just gotta get it to one hundred percent
before you return, or pushing that right that it's a
little bit scary. While we're on running backs, I should
have mentioned with Christian McCaffrey. The speculation, which I've now
seen repeated in a few areas, started with Mike Florio
(06:21):
at Pro Football Talk that Christian McCaffrey has been out
of practice potentially looking for more money in his contract.
It's an interesting it's an interesting story. I haven't seen
anyone report it. Usually it's not speculated about unless someone
has a clue that would actually make me feel better
about drafting Christian McCaffrey in fantasy leagues if he's sitting
(06:43):
out because it's contract related and not some weird vague
body soreness tightness, who knows. Let's go to an injury
which we just keep updating on the show, but because
it keeps getting worse. Jordan Tyson, the rookie Saints wide receiver,
is now expected to miss about two months at least
all of September, and we'll see when he returns for
(07:05):
the regular season. So they're putting on a pretty long
timeline for a hamstring strain, and to me, that means
Chris o'lave, like, you're back to what you were doing
last year. De von vle step right up, like you're
a big part of this offense. And then Juwan Johnson
is a name I see going pretty late in fantasy
leagues who could very easily be the number two pass
(07:26):
catcher on this Saints team.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
I'm a big Juwan Johnson guy and have been for
a while, especially when they lacked other legitimate playmakers in
their pass catching unit. Right, And that's fine, but this
does kind of dampen the optimism to myself and some
others have carried into the season regarding the Saints just
because you have one lass weapon.
Speaker 4 (07:41):
And it's also the nature of the injury.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
You know, kind of talked about it with Mike Evans,
But hamstrings are the most tricky of all of them
because one small, you know, flare up can set you
back a long time, which is why I think this
timeline is so long.
Speaker 4 (07:54):
It's also super disconcerting with Jordan.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
Tyson, because that was the knock on him coming out
of Arizona State was that he had this length the
injury history. He hasn't completed a full season since high school,
and he's it's not a toughness thing. It's just a
matter of if he continues to get hurt. So you hope
that the two month timeline gives him plenty of time
to fully heal, like the growing to get it back
to one hundred percent, and then you hope, Okay, now
he can hit the ground running and find his place
(08:16):
in this core. But it is it's disconcerting for a
rookie who you were coming into the season with high
expectations for and they're going to have to adjust.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
You would you change your Saints to in the division prediction? No?
Speaker 3 (08:25):
No, because they're in the worst vision football and that's
Tyler Shuck baby, Come.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
On, Bucks fans. Baker Mayfield must be listening to NFL
Daily and Shook's opinion and power rankings, because he got
on the horn today and was like, Oh, everyone's prick
has to be under five hundred this year.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
I see that definitely a shot at me, but it's
definitely a shot.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
At me talking about Shook Baker's locked in, you know,
former teammates with the Browns sort.
Speaker 4 (08:51):
Of, Yeah, not exactly. It's hard things together.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
It's it's hard not to think Jordan Tyson Odell Beckham
in a way. And that's I'm going to be positive
here because that's the type of player he is and
the way Nick Underhill, who covers the Saints, said he
was performing at camp where he like looked like maybe
the best player on the field, like like was just
dominating Odell Beckham is the best case scenario when it
(09:14):
comes to rookie hamstring injuries. It's easy to forget. He
missed the first big chunk of his rookie season and
much of training camp with the hamstring injury. And he
came out in whatever week it was, four, five, six,
I don't even remember, and he suddenly was the best
rookie receiver we had seen in a long time. So
that that's the dream if you're a Saints fan. Let's
go to the Rams. Pokinakua, Miles Garrett still out. They
(09:38):
said pokin A Coua was likely to return this week.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
He didn't. They're not just.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
Sitting these guys for no reason because Matthew Stafford, you know,
sat for all a camp last year and it was
the Rams, and they're very careful. It makes me a
little less concerned about these two guys, but both are
likely to return next week. Sean McVay says. Aaron Donald
also did another workout with the team. No update on
when he's returning. Are you getting like a little bit
(10:03):
spooked about Nikua and Garrett?
Speaker 3 (10:06):
Well, Miles because he it's knee swelling and he doesn't
really have a history with me, and She's like if
it was related to the shoulder, I'd be like, Okay, well,
he's dealt with that for years. I don't know if
I would necessarily say spooked. I would just say keep
an eye on it, you know, hashtag noticing. But when
it comes to Pukah, like between the two guys, you
don't need Miles Garrett training camp. He's gonna Fine's gonna
be Miles Garrett, who would have who a very good
(10:27):
player younger. I would still like him on the field
getting some reps for you know, here and there. The
good thing about the Rams, and this is not to
like take some sort of positive slant with them that
oh the Rams, they'll be fine. But they really will
be fine because not a lot has really changed. And
if anything, you're giving Matthew Stafford reps with other guys
that are gonna be playing around Pooka and you'll get
you know, you'll you'll receive the positive benefits from that.
(10:49):
But would I like to see them healthy at this point? Absolutely,
I'm just not the most concerned right now.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
Yeah, I just like to point it out, like the
plan is never for these guys to you know, sit
out a couple of weeks of camp with an injury,
So it's worth noting I wouldn't change my Puka stock
evaluation for this year yet at this point. Kyle Manungai,
the backup running back for the Bears that we mentioned
his injury a couple of days ago on the show,
he is likely to be out a couple of weeks.
(11:13):
Similar to Bresee Hall, I think they're trying to get
him ready for week one. We'll see Emica Abuka is
now uncertain because of his toe injury to be ready
for week one. According to Todd Bowles, they've taken a
couple hits. Nick Jalen McMillan, their third receiver, has been
out basically for all of camp. His return is uncertain,
(11:33):
and the fact that Bowles is noncommittal to Abuka playing
Week one I think shows how serious it is. They
really need Chris Godwin to be a big factor here
for the Bucks.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
Well, now it's Chris Godwin and Tess Johnson and whoever
else is on this depth chart.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
Went, let's go ted Hurst, Baby, let's go.
Speaker 4 (11:50):
Yeah, you also go with Ted Hurst.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
Yeah, and he went from being one of the deepest
receiving cores in the NFL last year to a group
now that is Chris Godwin and whoever else. For now,
I'm more concerned about the fact that Abuka the way
that his back half of last year happened, you know,
dealing with injury and kind of tailing off. I would
like for him to come in healthy and not dealing
(12:12):
with this type of thing. But again, you run this
stuff with training camp all the time, So now they
just have to make do with what they have until
they can get a little bit healthier.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
Yeah, it's it's disappointing. And yeah, he's a guy, and
look it's this time of season. I hate to bring
everything back to fantasy. We're going to do a fantasy
show with Josh Norris later in the week. But he's
a guy that I'm seeing getting drafted really early. I
did not like where he was getting drafted even before
this injury.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
Abuka.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
I'm sure this will sink his value a little bit,
but I just thought it was going to be more
of a spread the wealth offense. I wasn't assuming Abuka
just like slot him in as your number one twelve
hundred yards. We'll see a couple other receiver injuries no
one's really paying any attention to for some reason. Michael
Pittman's been out with a leg injury for at least
a week and is going to miss another week. DK Metcalf.
They won't even say what he's at with hashtag noticing
(13:02):
that contract related. I have no idea. I just I
don't know. They just aren't saying what he's out with.
He's out out least another week. I don't think it's
contract related. So that Mike McCarthy pointed that out. Keon
Coleman showed up to Bill's practice in a walking boot.
That's not a good sign. Taekwon Thornton, the receiver for
the Chiefs, left on a cart. I hate that I
(13:24):
gave Keon Coleman, the great Omen with the help of
my friend Eric Roberts for opening the new stadium with
a touchdown, and then he shows up to the next
practice in a walking boot.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
Not a good Omen.
Speaker 4 (13:37):
Well, it was a great play.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
I love the Falehorn. The price is right fail Horn.
It was a great play that he made in that
game to catch that touchdown. It was great play by
Josh Allen as well. But he did sprain toe foot
area in that game. So with everything that's good, when
it comes to Keon Coleman, there's a little bit of unfortunate,
a little bit of bad. But the boot, it could
be worse. Right now, it's a big season for him.
(14:01):
Let's wait and see.
Speaker 1 (14:02):
Yeah, and these Steelers receiver injuries, I'm not concerned until
they let me be more concerned. But when once a
guy's out for a week and a half, two plus
two weeks, like it is worth noting. Zadaria Smith is
a veteran pass rushalon who's bounced around the league quite
a bit lately, had his best days with the Packers,
but he's kind of like the poor Man's Clowney, Jedevian Clowney,
(14:23):
and that like he shows up and he gets production.
I said the other day on the show he was
expected to sign with the Browns. That was according to
Mary Kate Cabot. He actually signed with the Atlanta Falcons.
He got six million dollars like base salary. At this
point in the off season, everyone's using the Browns. It
seems like to raise the price. Yeah, yeah, not great.
Speaker 3 (14:46):
It's hilarious because the Browns are now over to on
trying to bring in guys that used to play for them,
that at our edge rushers in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
They both went to places where they have ties.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
Jenevian Clowney goes back to Houston, the team the drafted him.
Zadarius Smith goes to Cleveland, looks around and goes, wait,
Kevin's fans, he's not here anymore. I'm gonna go join
Kevin Stefanski's team in Atlanta, where they also need an
edge rusher because you know, they're obviously down one of,
if not both, of their first round picks from last year,
and so it makes sense from a football perspective. I'm
just glad that he got He's getting a job. The
(15:15):
guy that basically walked away from football and decided no
you know what, I'm coming back, and and so he
goes and finds a co coach that he's familiar with.
Speaker 4 (15:21):
We'll see what happened.
Speaker 5 (15:22):
Here.
Speaker 1 (15:22):
Here are their pass rushers in Atlanta. It's Samson, ebicom
Zadarias Smith, brieln Trice, Zizo Julari another former Brown Cam Thomas.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
That's not a good group.
Speaker 4 (15:34):
Yeah, boss Jalen Walker, and we'll see what happens to
James Spears.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
Yeah, he's out half the season. N I'm the Mattabeke
is a all pro level talent for the Ravens. We
were excited to hear was not retiring because of his
neck injury. That wasn't on the pup list to start camp.
Sometimes with these initial reports we get a little over
excited and then we find out a few weeks later
he has not had any contact work, he's been very
(15:57):
limited at practice, and that he could be a few
week weeks away from having any contact work. So just
something to keep an eye on there that we don't
know if he is fully back or not. Let's go
to the Jaguars have had a lot of injuries. Parker
Washington has been out of practice this week is supposed
to return maybe next week, but that's their number one receiver.
(16:18):
Leaquint Allen, their third down back, is going to be
out for the rest of camp. A lot of these
running backs are just being put on hold until the
season start. One of their starting offensive lineman, Patrick McCarry
had back surgery that's going to keep him out for
a while. His backup Wyatt tell Him, has also been hurt.
Walker Little, who's one of their tackles, has been hurt.
(16:39):
Cole Van Lannon, who is their left tackle, has been
out for most of the camp. Like they are a
little bit of a mess, especially on the offensive line.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
Sneaky.
Speaker 1 (16:48):
One of the most banged up teams in the league,
which makes it more notable. I'm going to throw this
one at you. I don't know if you know this
is coming. They didn't even know Travis Hunter. They didn't
even use Travis Hunter on offense on Monday at all.
Our friend John Shipley noted FORRESI dot Com. So it
kind of starting to show their hand that it's really
going to be heavy defense and I think a sprinkling
(17:09):
of offense, especially considering Parker Washington wasn't even out there
and they didn't use Travis Hunter at all on offense.
Speaker 4 (17:14):
Yeah, at least really in the season.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
This is a team that is weirdly positioned in that
they have a collection of veterans that are not going
to get slotted into the starting lineup to try to
fill some of these needs.
Speaker 4 (17:24):
But it's not it's not like a hot it lowers
the ceiling.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
Like these are all guys whose names you recognized, and
they all washed out from somewhere else when they came
in with relatively high expectations and they're now just like
in the too deep and they're slut you know, as
we're Cleveland's the chum Minidoga's those types, right, and and
that's never encouraging. However, when it comes to Travis Hunter,
that doesn't surprise.
Speaker 2 (17:41):
Me at all.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
I don't really care if he plays that much offense
because that's not going to be his primary position going forward.
Speaker 4 (17:47):
He's going to be a cornerback.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
And that's totally fine with a group that they have,
you know, I know, Washington not you know participating right now, right,
but you still have Chaobe Myers, got Brian Thomas coming
off of you know, an up and down season last year.
Speaker 4 (17:58):
It's fine.
Speaker 3 (17:58):
You got when it comes to Travis Hunter, I'm over
the experiment. I know it attracts the eyeballs and everything,
but just slot him in where he's best and where
he's most valuable, and that's on defense.
Speaker 1 (18:07):
Oh I think he's got a play offense, but it
could be like ten to fifteen snaps one week, it
could be five the next, it could be twenty five
to the next. But I love the idea of all
pro cornerback Travis Hunter.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
That's what I'm hoping for.
Speaker 1 (18:18):
But I'm telling you this, these offensive line injuries in Jacksonville,
I have not seen talked about a lot, and it's
been everywhere they I don't know how long term all
these are, but it could be a big problem for
them early in the season. I tease the old friends
returning to our lives this week to start the show,
Von Miller is a Dallas Cowboy. He's been begging to
(18:43):
join this team via social media basically all off season.
We're going to hit the Cowboys on Wednesday morning show.
It's the NFC East Preview with Patrick Claybon. So Miller
joins a deep, but maybe not like high.
Speaker 2 (18:59):
Level pass rush group.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
How would you describe the Cowboys passrest group.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
Now that they add von Miller.
Speaker 4 (19:05):
To the mix, it's better than it was last year.
Speaker 3 (19:09):
Like they went and got Rashan Gary, You'll see what
you get a Dominezaraku. It's a mix of veteran talent
with household names that kind of need a bounce back
or for in von Miller's case, just another year in
the league. Although he had a pretty solid season in
Washington last year as part of the worst defense in
the NFL statistically, it's not one that strikes fear in
(19:29):
the heart of an opposing offense. But I think the
real strength is what they've done with their front, you know,
with Quentin Williams and Kenny Clark, and I think the
combined results will be better than the names on paper.
I just thought it was hilarious that after he campaigns
to join the Cowboys that the first person to talk
about it is DeMarcus Ware to ESPN, just raving about
(19:52):
how this is going to be so much more valuable
to the Cowboys than they realize. He's going to come
in there and teach those young guys what he knows,
just like I used to teach him back in Denver.
And obviously DeMarcus Ware has the Cowboys connection, and I'm
just like, you are really over overselling.
Speaker 2 (20:05):
Oh how dare you?
Speaker 1 (20:06):
I mean, he really is the DeMarcus where a timeline.
Granted it's it's von Miller now late in his career
DeMarcus Ware when he joined the Broncos, but you know
he's doing the reverse DeMarcus Ware, going for the Broncos
and then a bunch of other teams, but then landing
on the Cowboys. The Colts signed Keenan Allen and in
Miller's contract. By the way, Von Miller's contract is so
(20:28):
much it's over five and a half million dollar base
that he's going to play a lot for that team.
So makes you wonder a little bit about Malachi Lawrence,
their first round pick.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
The Colts signed Keenan Allen. That's fun.
Speaker 1 (20:38):
Former coach Shane Steichen is there, so I've been wondering
what they're gonna do at receiver. The Colts call up
Keenan Allen. It's up to eight point two million dollars,
but wouldn't surprise me if the base is closer to
three four five million dollars. But he's got a chance
to play a decent amount Keenan Allen can't can't get
rid of him shook.
Speaker 3 (21:00):
We have discussed this Colt's receiver situation multiple times in
the past. We are concerned collectively about the fact that
they gave all that money to Alec Pierce and then
moved on from Michael Pittman, and it you know, the
idea of putting Josh downs outside when he should not
be outside as a receiver, because you're just looking for
different options and ways to use the guys that you
have on your roster, Ashton Dula and Nick Westbrook a
Kine being your next best options.
Speaker 4 (21:22):
This made all the sense in the world.
Speaker 3 (21:23):
But it's funny, Greg because in you know, now mid August,
it is very much Madden Season, and sometimes I like
to see what happens in my franchise and then does
it end up mirroring in real life. So I'm playing
against the Buccaneers the other day in Keenan Allen lands
on the Buccaneers. So I opened my email this morning
and I see, you know, somebody had sent something out
about Keenan Allen signing somewhere, but it was cut off
in the title, and I was like, ooh, did you
(21:43):
go to the buccaneer.
Speaker 4 (21:43):
No, he went to the Colts, and I was like, Yes,
love that signing. Love that signing.
Speaker 1 (21:46):
Reminds me a little bit of last year though, when
he and Lad McConkie were kind of duplicative, and I
do think yep Alan almost got in the way, and
he played well early in the season, but as some
veterans do, wore down a little little bit physically as
a season went on, because yeah, Josh Downs is going
to play the slot, but I think Keenan Allen's best
position at this point is certainly in the slot, and
(22:09):
so then are you really playing the guys at their
best spots.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
We'll see.
Speaker 1 (22:14):
Related to the Colts, their assistant general manager talked about
Anthony Richardson in a very positive way staying on the team,
essentially saying they're not going to give Anthony Richardson a way.
It's a win now type of year for the Colts,
and they needed three quarterbacks last year, and so you
(22:34):
never know they might need quarterbacks this year. I also
read this, and it goes with some reports that I've
seen that Riley Leonard hasn't exactly lit it up in
camp or the preseason, and so like what's the point
of trading Anthony Richardson. They need to win this year,
and Anthony Richardson probably would give them a better chance
to win than anyone else they could find. If Daniel
(22:54):
Jones was out for a couple games, you know, I
think Richardson is not going anywhere.
Speaker 3 (23:00):
Daniel Jones being out a couple games usually happens in
faris Daniel Jones seasons, so it's good to have insurance.
I just think about the nightmare scenario for the Colts
this year is that, like they trade Richardson, he ends
up going somewhere and find success in the future. In
the meantime, they lose Daniel Jones. There down to Riley
Leonard and they're like, what did we do that for?
So it makes a lot of sense to hang on
to him.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
I was high on Riley Leonard coming off last season.
Might still happen for him.
Speaker 1 (23:21):
Maybe he's a gamer, looked pretty good when he actually
played in the regular season. A lot of negative injury news,
but this is the week where a lot of players
who had been on the shelf for much training camp return,
So I'm just gonna list them off for you. Great news.
Jalen Waddle back for the Broncos. Tristan Wurf's really practicing
for the first time for the Bucks since like the
first day of camp. DeVante Smith is back for the
(23:44):
Eagles in practicing. Josh Jacobs is expected to return for
the Packers. That's a big one. Quinjon Mitchell missed a
lot of practice. He's been back. Paulson Adebo is back
for the Giants, although they're playing it with the backups,
which is interesting to watch. Gino Smith's foot injury was
a short term thing. They just kept him out of
the preseason, but he's practicing. The Jets also had a
couple of their defensive players, Joseph Asai the edge rusher
(24:05):
and Tovandre Sweat, returned to practice. The exciting rookie running
back for the Seahawks, Jenerian Price was back at practice
full go after missing much of his work, and then
Kaylan Black was out there at.
Speaker 2 (24:19):
The joint practice.
Speaker 1 (24:21):
He is the rookie running back for the forty nine
ers who could get a lot of work if Christian
McCaffrey can't get back on the field. Now, hold on
one second, we're going to say goodbye with you, Shook,
but we have a special correspondent on this show. Yes,
we've got boots on the ground all over the country.
Jordan rod Rieg was at the Texans Raiders joint practice
(24:45):
and we asked her to file a report. I can't
wait to hear what is happening in Houston.
Speaker 5 (24:53):
On the offense. I wanted to talk about what I
saw in joint practices from CJ. Stroud and specifically in
up and down down for both teams quarterbacks. I want
to say, a couple picks at the end in sort
of garbage time by Stroud and then Mendoza was picked
off through a pick six for the Raiders, and then
Kirk Cousins tough a pick as well. But you're gonna
have those in joint practices. So that wasn't really what
(25:15):
I was focusing on as much as looking at what
this run game looked like, because I saw them walk
through it and install what they wanted to do in
the practice today and it looked the part. Demo. David
Montgomery on this team is a really, really great bonus
for this team in terms of he's got this presence
and a veteran experience that he knows what he wants
(25:36):
from his blocking. That really really helps when you're talking
about an offensive line that's still in the mix and
still getting to know each other. Kilan Rutledge is going
to be a dude. I mean gonna be a freaking dude.
I mean that guy is just getting into it and scrapping.
Demo told me that he's leading the entire group too.
This is a rookie, by the way. It's playing guard
(25:58):
right now. Could play center at some point will but
right now they like him at guard, and then Fernando Mendoza.
You know, Kirk Cousins. I still I do have some
worries about his mobility in terms of I'm not really
sure yet. I didn't see a ton of it today.
I'm still not sure. And we'll see about whether he's
going to get be able to do those longer bootlegs
(26:18):
and some of that like deeper drop stuff that like
Clint Kubiak and this system in general wants to do.
He had a tough time just timing wise against the
Texans defensive line. I think anybody would, and it just
was rough. Not no real push in the run game
for the Raiders, However, I think they're gonna get Ashton
(26:39):
Chancey going so much more in the passing game, which
is really exciting, so much more in the screen game,
which we've talked about on the show, which is exciting.
Speaker 4 (26:46):
And also.
Speaker 5 (26:48):
The rookie running back Mike Washington Junior like genuinely has
some stuff to him, especially as an outside zone runner.
He really churns through those first players pretty well. And
you know, he was a bright spot for them today
even though they couldn't really get a ton of run
game going. On the Raiders side, random Mendoza a lot
of work under center, as we expected, even when it
(27:10):
was tough sledding for him, he looked confident. He had
the best, probably the best play on offense for the
Raiders today, which was a mid range throw to the
sideline opposite sideline to brock Bowers. Really cool little scheme
on the play too. Brock Bowers capitalized really, I mean,
he just looks as form. And then on the other side,
I just also wanted to reiterate the Texans run game
(27:33):
look good. They got to keep going and they all
told me, you know, this a work in progress and
this is still as they say in football, stacking blocks
and just good reps, good reps, good reps. But they
really needed a day like this where they could see
all the ideas and the design and the mental stuff
and the physicality that they've been trying to build in
practice without being able to really hit people come to
(27:57):
Fruition today. So I think they all came away feeling really,
really positive about this day. Now, I'm just trolling you
because you said said something short and this is almost
six minutes long.
Speaker 1 (28:07):
All right, you know, she said she trolled me with
six minutes of content. We trolled her right back by
like cutting off the first two and a half minutes
where oh, it was just kind of creative control.
Speaker 4 (28:16):
It's just kind of still in the studio.
Speaker 1 (28:18):
Clearing her throat and just setting it up. And that
was great stuff. I really love hearing this stuff. And
she was excited. You could tell listening to it about
Mike Washington an interesting player to watch for the Raiders.
I'm kind of excited about Mike Washington too. I'm excited
about this Texans offense. But you know who else loved
Mike Washington our Draftnick Consiglieri, Spice, Rack Brad Spicer.
Speaker 2 (28:42):
Longtime listeners will know him.
Speaker 1 (28:44):
So I am hashtag noticing this situation with the Raiders
I can't wait to watch them.
Speaker 3 (28:49):
Yeah, I hope that everything works out up front for them,
and I hope that they can get the most I mean,
I hope brock Bower stays healthy because if he doesn't,
they'll have a more balanced offense.
Speaker 4 (28:56):
They're gonna need it.
Speaker 3 (28:57):
But love watching Mike Mike Washington gallop through the Defense
Net preseason opener.
Speaker 4 (29:02):
I want to see more of them.
Speaker 1 (29:03):
Some levels to this Raiders offense this season. Levels to
the NFL Daily Crew, Like what a week we're having
here with Claybon and Shook. Shook will be back with
me on Sunday night. Let's get out of here. That's
not our next show, but Shook will next be on
the program Sunday evening. The plan is eight o'clock Eastern,
(29:24):
five o'clock Pacific. Join us to recap all the games.
That's going to be a big one preseason week two recap.
But before we get to that, we got me in
a times this week. We got Josh Norris and then
on Wednesday we got Patrick Clayban talking NFC East.
Speaker 2 (29:37):
We will see that
