on the on the pod. Here, I am Cam Jordan
off the Edge with me, your host, Cam Jordan, and
I'm sitting next to a Hall of Famer, a Heisman
Trophy winner, an NFL mvy B, a ten time pro bowler,
six time All Pro, the man who was iconic in Detroit,
a nineteen ninety seven NFL VP MVP, NFL's fourth all

(00:29):
time leading rusher, talking about the man, the myth, the
obvious legend who's in flesh. Barry Sanders, appreciate you coming by.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
It's good to see you, man. It's always good to
see you.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
It's like I just saw someone saying it seems like that.
It seems like you saw saw yesterday the day before.
I like Super Bowl because I got I'm walking away
in you.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
I'm glad i'm seeing you, you know, sort of on
this this this field right here. You know, I'm glad
I'm not I'm not heeling me now. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
I'm glad I'm not seeing you.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
I'm not.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
I'm glad I'm not seeing on the turf.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
Man.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
I'm glad I'm not seing you out there.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
Hey, especially when you played in the show, like all
they had was you, you know, they had they have
some guys. But in terms of Hall of Fame type players.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
I can't complain, man, I think complaining, you know, I
think complaining.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
I mean, is is there a current or former player
that you bumped into this week that you like, I
didn't expect to see you today.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
I mean, it's always good to see like all the guys,
you know. I mean, there's there's so many current and
former players. I love seeing Roder Craig going to the Hall. Honestly,
I love seeing that.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
Ye look, I had to look him up because it
was just yeah, it's just out of my perimeter.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Man. He was awesome, awesome player, awesome, just versatile player.
You know, he's like he was like a Christ McCaffrey.
You know, he could he could catch it out the backfield.
I like him. Yeah, you can hand it off to him.
I mean, you know, just versatile. And he was right
in the middle of all that Niners dynasty. And there's
so many great players on that team. It's hard to
it's hard to put them all in the Hall. But
he's very deserving. I love seeing that.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
Yeah, gotta be excited. I mean, I was just excited
for Drew Brees. I was just too excited for.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
He finished to first.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
Yeah, absolutely, I mean you know said get the hundreds.
There's a lot of things. It was like he was like,
you know, maybe we should have levels to the Hall
of Fame whatever, Like my goal should be different, you know,
like there is there is the first ballot of conversation going.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
He knows, he knows he would be in that very
very elite class.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
Yeah, exactly, you Hill, Drew, Peyton Manning, you know guys
that you know are consistent first ballot Hall of famers. Well,
in my mind, is there for running backs? Is there
like a stat that means you're Hall of Fame worthy?
Of course you'd have you know, ten thousand yards or
whatever that is. But what what tells you hall of
Fame worthy running back?

Speaker 3 (02:41):
Well?

Speaker 2 (02:41):
I think you know, you always have the eye test, right.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
Was his thousand yards of real tis?

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Yeah, it was. It was, you know, the eye test.
And I think and I think sort of consistency.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
Yeah, you know, and and because it is in terms
of production over the Spanish person, Yeah, production over the
span of your career, you know, and obviously you know,
yards and number of yards and yards per carry, but
I think production eye test, you know, and in the
number of yards that you end up with when your
peers know you were when.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
The guys you played against. Yeah, understand that.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
It's not the it's not the whole pro it's not
the like Pro Bowl fan vote, all Pro writers, right,
but your your peers, no, especially you know, Miles geargets
tweety three sacks in the season. Guess what, He's the
greatest greatest pass rusher of all times until somebody breaks
breaks his record. You know, Barry.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Sanders is the greatest of all time.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
I mean that you're gonna put him at do you
know the season? This is the season you're able to
put together.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
I played against Reggie Reggie White, sure you know, And
I'm not gonna say he's better than Miles. But I'm
just gonna say I'm just I just wanted to mention
I played against Reggie whe Absolutely, I'll leave it at
that automatically.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
I'm you know, I'm yeah, Juonius Peppers. You know, there's
there's guys like l T. Of course l T, right,
but there's there's argument to be had.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
But that's just the greatest part about it is something different.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
Yeah right, yeah, and you need to talk about LT.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
We talked about that for another few hours, that.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Conversation like LT, I'm actually a half sack behind LT.
But it'll continue. You know, we love to have those
type of conversations when you're when you're amongst the stars,
you're just in a different statusphere.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
Absolutely, man, So you can talk about all.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
The comments you want. Just know you're a comment as well.
You know you're streaking by in this in this this
thing we call life and bright as you can be.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
And hey, look you've been doing your thing too, man,
you know for a while now.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
Wow longevity, Wow, I believe. I believe you said consistently.
I believe in consistency, longevity.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
Absolute.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
Don't show me what you could do year one or
YouTube lead by storming two or three, four years, show
me seven year seven.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
I look forward to seeing you in Canton. Man.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
All right, that's that's hYP can What would you can consider?

Speaker 3 (04:58):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (04:58):
The NFL? You know your time, it was sixteen games
in my beginning of my career, sixteen games. We expanded
seventeen games. We all know we're going to eighteen games.
Does how does that affect you. You like, we all know
it is gonna happen, you know it. Eventually we're gonna
have like a twenty week, twenty twenty game schedule and
it's gonna be O D like And I'm gonna look
around like, I don't know how these guys I'm making
twenty eighteen. I'm gonna have to think about it. If

(05:21):
I'm do, I want to be a part of it.
Seventeen is a task.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
It is it is, you know, And that that looks
like we're is headed. I know, I know seventeen. It's
been seventeen for what two or three years now, like three,
three or four years? Yeah, you know, And and hey,
I'm sure your current players and current owners, you guys will.
I'm sure you guys will work it out. We gotta

(05:45):
fight that, but you got to work it out.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
And figure every time every time we say hey, no,
we're not gonna stand for this, more money gets thrown
at it, and everybody wants to bigger. User comes down
to it, Yes, the Pikas getting bigger and the Slights
keep getting bigger consequently.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Yeah, also because you know, you got the games off
shore right in Europe and South America, everybody, more exposure, everyone,
and everyone loves the product. I think that's that's the
bottom line, right, everyone loves the product. They want they
want more of it, you know, and so as long
as they do right by, the players can go for it.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
I guess eighteen, you know, look at seventeen you feel
every hit.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
I'm sure you do.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
There's years where were like, man, I wish we just
had you, I could play two three more games. And
there's also years you're like, brother, this year, it's week fourteen,
I'm on one foot trying to get to the finish
line so I can get this this hopefully this is
by week secure the number seed and then be ready
for this playoff push. But you know, just that's that's
where every every season it could be changed. Could you
imagine yourself playing sixteen, sixteen season in the league?

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Sixteen seasons sixteen, well, I played team.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
If I play, I played next year sixteen.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
You played. It's a nice thought, you know, phenomenaln't I
don't know, Yeah, I don't. I don't know how you
managed it, especially in the position that you played, right,
you know, so you got to be cut out of
the different cloth.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
Man.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
That's all I can say. I mean, you do that.
It's cool because you know you be playing at a
high level, you know, and uh, one of the best
picks you ten, you go.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
For twelvendred yards. You think about you're eleven?

Speaker 2 (07:19):
Right, you do? You know? In the years, it goes fast, man,
it goes fast. It goes fast.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
This is what I've never liked. I've never agreed with.
It goes fast. The memories to make it feel like
it goes fast. But he's one of those seasons. I
remember those those shoulder injury or the knee injury or
the ankle injury, or you know, having my first kid,
and I remember, like bro, I wanted like I had
my my daughter, my four child, my daughter in December,
and I was so happy. We were headed towards the
end of season. I said, because like, you know, wife,

(07:46):
he needs help or whatever it is. My brother, I'm burning,
I'm burning bud Bridges here, I'm.

Speaker 2 (07:51):
Gabing because it's been twenty five years since I played.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
That's why you remember you remember ice cream not here? Right?

Speaker 4 (07:56):
Yeah? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (07:57):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (07:57):
Maybe the good parts, yeah, the good part, great parts. Yeah.
So maybe that's why I say it goes class. But
you're right in the middle of it. You know you're sixteen,
You got five or ten more left in you? You
know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
I look at guys like Calais Campbell, who's there, Like
year if I finish up year nineteen, and I'm like, brother,
what then, good God grace has got you here.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
I mean, you can do at least what Aaron Rodgers
has done right twenty you can do twenty years.

Speaker 1 (08:22):
I will not be forty playing football.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
I will not.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
There's not a shot that even if I quit today,
I will never fillip rivers this thing five years from now.
I'm like, you know what, I got one more in me? No,
I do not. I give everything I got now because
I could walk I could have walked away a year
ten as you did and been completely blessed like that
is a phenomenal career. I've done. I've done everything I
could other than win a Super Bowl, like I give.

(08:45):
I give everything I can in practice, so I can
know I've given everything I can in games and heart.
Year fifteen, I'm like, if there's another year, if there's
another two years, in another three years, Hallelujah'm gonna work
for each and every one of them. And and if
I never played football again, hallelujah work for eaching what
every one of those and my kids got to see
me play, you know, my wife got to do the
little fat heads with my with my name and likeness

(09:08):
all up in the stadiums and everywhere.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
My kid is understand, you know what I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
But right, it'll be different once you change. That's that
part to it.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
Right.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
What is the greatest advice you can give from for
transitioning from the game.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
Well, I think, I mean, you don't always know when
you are trying to you know, when you move it
on from the game, absolutely, and so you you certainly
have to take advantage of it. I think it's great
to do what you're doing and that you're you know,
you're looking to maybe what's next and setting yourself up
for what's next. You should always be uh thinking about

(09:44):
that because it's just that kind of a business, right
you know. And so it's you know, use it as
a as a platform, you know. That's why I'm great
to be here after a year twenty five. You know,
obviously this year I'm here working on behalf of Amagine.
I'm right, I'm working on behalf of an engine, and
we're just trying to raise awareness for heart health there,

(10:07):
you know, raise awareness for heart the cardiovascular What do
we put Well, I had, I had, I had a
little heart incident in the summer of twenty twenty four,
right and so and so I'm learning you know, a
lot about just heart disease and and uh, heart disease
and stroke and how it impacts far too many people

(10:27):
and so much of it. You know, we can we
can lower those risk factors, right, and so talk to
your doctor about high cholesterol or l d LC and
and because the only way to find out is to
talk to your doctor, you know. You know, it could
be something where you're young and healthy and have a

(10:47):
hereditary issue, right and so, so go to Attack Heart
Disease dot com slash documentary. You can find out you
know about test strategies and and and that sort of
thing and how to lower your risk, you know. But
but yeah, So it's cool to be able to just
do stuff like that because of the platform I had

(11:08):
playing football, you know, And absolutely, and it's great to
see a lot of guys using their platform for that reason,
you know. So but yeah, but I'm feeling good and
it's great just being able to get the message out
there and be able to help help a lot of fans. Yeah,
maybe dealing with that.

Speaker 1 (11:25):
We'd love to hear it. I'm glad you're here because
I mean, you got your statue in front of in
front of the four Stadium over there in Detroit, Like
I don't want to be a remember statue. I know
you're here and we're glad you are. Appreciate you for
staying by Off.

Speaker 2 (11:38):
The Edge man.

Speaker 1 (11:40):
This is my guy, Barry Sanders, the iconic legend just
and that's why I'm blessed because I sit around, I
get to talk to legends of the game, and it
was like, just realize how close you are to great
and sometimes stay tuned. We'll be right back. Welcome here.
You know, we were here off the Edge of Cam

(12:02):
Jordan the podcast. You know, football player, podcaster. You're always
trying to do more than you can and I'm always
looking for the next event. I'm always trying to do
something just a little beyond my reach. I'm sitting here
with the legend in the game, you know, a Grammy
winning rapper, actor, a businessman. You know, I'm sick to
the rapper because you know, it is what it is.
You wrap, you wrap, Atlanta. We have some connection there

(12:23):
because I'm always like, y'all, okay, I mean you play
knowing the Saints, you know exactly. Yeah, there he goes.
You know, it's sorry, you know.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
Yeah, I feel good about I feel good about this year.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
Man.

Speaker 3 (12:36):
We swept, y'all, ye swept. And honestly, my son is
a family, y'all. That's what Kelse the King is.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
I don't talk to him a few times in the summer,
you know, I like to say he came to a better,
a better situation we got. We got a super Bowl.
Atlanta hasn't ever say, God, the.

Speaker 4 (12:57):
Jail people, you go to prison, you come and his sons,
the Saints fan, whole house.

Speaker 3 (13:02):
Flipped upside down, Stay out of trouble, stay out of you.

Speaker 1 (13:06):
He went, he went to you know, he had a
little trouble, but then his bars got better. Suit on.
Sometimes as a suburban kid, my dad playing in the
Minnesota Vikings for thirteen years, a suburb kit, you gotta
get little dirty on your I mean, your daddy tries everything.

Speaker 4 (13:18):
They would have no idea of it, you know, from
what I see he we all have had those moments
in our life where we had, you know, to learn
from trial and are absolutely and we've all bumped our
heads and taken lessons along with us. So he shall
be no different, except I guess there's already an expectation

(13:39):
of him to have it together already, right, you know
what I mean, which isn't a realistic expectation. Absolutely, I'm
extremely proud of him. He's a phenomenal father. Just just
he just gave me a grandson, and.

Speaker 3 (13:52):
And that is that has changed him. And you know.

Speaker 4 (13:55):
He's evolved into just quite a more thoughtful person. Yeah, aware, yeah,
more aware, Yeah, and I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (14:04):
I'm here s fatherhood to do it for you, will.
I mean I got four better that first way. We're
no longer in.

Speaker 3 (14:10):
The streets and man, like I ain't even three four,
you know what, I do? Want to go home this right,
Let me get a hot make sure my house is
still standing.

Speaker 1 (14:18):
Absolutely so, So what brought you out here?

Speaker 3 (14:21):
Man? I really just out here to see the festivities?

Speaker 1 (14:23):
Man?

Speaker 3 (14:23):
You know what I'm saying. The band is a lovely place.

Speaker 4 (14:26):
I always make got real people out here, man, I
got family and friends out here, So I just you know,
decided to come at and just you know, take you
into festivities.

Speaker 1 (14:34):
Man, man, I love that. I mean I used to
call you the king of the South houst to I.

Speaker 3 (14:39):
Mean Houston was a rooster to the hend came in.
You know what you mean.

Speaker 1 (14:43):
I went to New Orleans. I had to buy into
not like it like you. In two thousand, I had
a no, you don't, but if I can't, I if
I like you, guess I'm a Sartain liking too. And
then then I said Julio Jones. And also, but it
all starts in the place, so you're still in the playlist.
You know what I'm saying. Playlist.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
Hey man, listen. You know what you don't know me
that you can sense.

Speaker 4 (15:07):
Your university, your kingdom, or however you want to whoever
you decide to make your king.

Speaker 1 (15:11):
Jesus is good luck Jesus.

Speaker 3 (15:14):
Gee okay, well, I mean no Earth absolutely, man.

Speaker 1 (15:18):
When I think about what you meant to the game, bro,
That's why I'm saying, music starts how you even enter
or into that game. Wake up in the morning. Sometimes
you need a little gangs in it. Sometimes you gotta
have little him to calm you down. Sometimes you wake
up wired and you like, all right, brother, let me
let me chill out, you know.

Speaker 3 (15:36):
I mean, man, I like to stay centered, you know
what I'm saying.

Speaker 4 (15:40):
I kind of like to have my music set the
tone of the environment based on how I'm already feeling.
I try not to have the outside source of the
energy kind of drive me. I like to drive the
energy of the outside source. So if I'm already calm

(16:00):
in that piece, that's when I play shoya.

Speaker 3 (16:03):
That's when I, oh, you embrace it.

Speaker 4 (16:05):
Yeah, when I'm already coming a piece, And because if
I feel that I'm already kind of like too amped up,
I'm going to center myself, meditate and kind of you know,
do some breathing techniques. I'm going to focus on my
energy to be driven from within rather than you know,
be guided from the exterior.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
Yeah, look all of those I can't wake up at
nine o'clock with the three o'clock game and still be wired,
like you ain't gonna sustain six hours and I'm ready
to fight now.

Speaker 3 (16:34):
That's right, So I gotta calm down when storm here.

Speaker 4 (16:37):
Absolutely not, you don't, absolutely yeah, man, try some breathing
techniques and meditation, man, that uh.

Speaker 3 (16:44):
You know, what I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (16:45):
Yeah, are you releasing your final album?

Speaker 3 (16:47):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (16:48):
Kill the King? Yes, release the track I heard I
heard heard earlier this month. Us. Oh, he's I said,
We're bad. Why is now the right time to announce
retirement when you were You can't just drop heat and.

Speaker 3 (17:00):
Like, I'm gonna exit on my own terms.

Speaker 4 (17:04):
I feel like God, God sends us all here with many,
many gifts. You know, after you're done with one of
those gifts, when those gifts have afforded you the opportunity
to utilize the rest of those gifts, then you know
it's time to focus your attention on those other gifts.
And I think that time has come for me. I've
been blessed. I've been blessed with an illustrious career. I

(17:27):
dreamed about being in this industry. I dreamed of all
the things that I wanted to do, and I've done
most of them, you know, I've done most of them.
I mean to retire, you know, but if you got
to earn the right every time, when you've been blessed
by the fans to have a career like this, you have.

Speaker 3 (17:47):
To earn the right to walk away.

Speaker 4 (17:49):
And so I'm gonna give I'm gonna give I'm gonna
give one final uh it's just just I mean, one
hundred percent effort, you know what I mean, and le
it out there. And then I'm gonna start focusing on
like real estate development, things like film television as a writer, director, producer,

(18:10):
introducing other other.

Speaker 1 (18:11):
Talent to the ject metaphor community.

Speaker 4 (18:14):
Yeah, absolutely, you know what I mean, trying to do
other things that I feel like God gave me gifts
to do, and I think I have to take a
little time away from the primary gift in order to
focus on these other ones.

Speaker 1 (18:27):
Right, I mean, I mean, you're also the progenitor, like
the originator of hat placements. You know what I'm saying,
am I? In my fifteen years, I can show you
I've had different hairstyles over the years, from your high
top fade to dual high top fade. I done had
a Jerry curl okay forty I had a mustache to
curl up. I have had plenty of looks. Every year
I switched up. I had silver twists this year dreams.

(18:50):
You know what I'm saying. I said, why not? You
know what I'm saying for you? Where what is your
your uh? You know your sound comfort. I mean, you've
had different hairstyles yourself. Yeah, you can started generations side.

Speaker 4 (19:00):
This don't going to be on I mean, bro, my
style comes from mostly exposure the things that I've been
fortunate enough and blessed enough to.

Speaker 3 (19:13):
Be exposed to.

Speaker 4 (19:16):
Styles like Okay, I remember I did a I started
spending a lot of time in like Africa, South Africa,
Cape Town, johannibird Uh, Tanzania, Kenya, Ghana, you know what
I mean. And I just started like wearing like the
African I started. I bought like a probably about by
twenty five outfits. Yeah, I don't know if they were

(19:39):
just dashikis. It was kind of like the they budget.

Speaker 3 (19:41):
The button out the way up. Yeah yeah, yeah.

Speaker 4 (19:44):
I started wearing a bunch of them, you know what
I mean, because just because it felt right, I was
exposed to it, I liked it, and you know what
I'm saying, I just put I put a little different piece.

Speaker 3 (19:53):
Of swag on it, you know what I mean. Uh,
And the hairstyles had to reflect hairstyck. Now my hairstyle.
The reason ain't my hair. Okay.

Speaker 4 (20:02):
So back in the pandemic when nobody went getting no haircuts.

Speaker 3 (20:04):
We were sheltering in place, right.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
You know what I mean?

Speaker 4 (20:06):
So I had like my hair had there grew out
like a little fro, and I had my face that
grew in.

Speaker 3 (20:11):
And so I met you've never seen you face here Instagram.
It don't connect.

Speaker 1 (20:19):
I was like, I said, wait a minute with there.

Speaker 3 (20:20):
You know, it's more like cheek fudds. You know what
I'm saying.

Speaker 4 (20:24):
So I'm out and as a woman walked up to
me and she said, hey, you know what, never mind,
I thought you were t I. I was like, okay,
I can hide. So I just started growing my hair,
you know what I'm saying, thinking that I have a
little more time to myself. Uh and you know, now

(20:44):
at it's time to get back out there, man, give
a hundred percent of myself to the fans. I had
to cut it off. Man, I had to cut it
off and get back to the brain boy.

Speaker 1 (20:54):
We were back. Yeah, okay, that's a t ip, baby
me excited. What's your favorite to I song?

Speaker 3 (21:02):
I don't know right now. Let them know it's a
new one.

Speaker 1 (21:07):
And I love that. I mean, what you're looking forward
to with this like this last one? Does this sound
weird to say? The last one.

Speaker 4 (21:12):
Nah, man, I'm excited about it. Bro, I'm excited about it.
It's kind of like graduating high school.

Speaker 3 (21:17):
You know what I'm saying. It's like, you know, I
actually get a chance to finish what I started.

Speaker 1 (21:23):
You're gonna be a tear drop when it's all set
in drying. So okay, Look as a man, you know,
like it's sort of hard to just release most tames.

Speaker 3 (21:31):
Man, it's people, you know, we are forced them to
the time. Indeed, you did, know what I'm saying. What's
a ball player when you want to you know exit,
you know on a Super Bowl absolutely, especially second goal.
You want to hear this. You want to get out
of there. You know when you got a ring and
you hay, you know what I'm saying, you know, an
age your m v P and.

Speaker 1 (21:51):
Yeah, I and even if if a Super Bowl ring possible,
personal accolades like done, done all of it, scoring right,
honeys deep, sitting sitting in the pantheon of the greatest right,
So when they Minchian, you're like, oh man, but he
also did everything else to salute There's nothing that you
haven't accomplished personally.

Speaker 3 (22:10):
And that's why I'm man with it.

Speaker 1 (22:12):
I love that, man.

Speaker 3 (22:13):
I appreciate you stopping respect.

Speaker 1 (22:15):
I got one last question for you. Went in the
Super Bowl.

Speaker 3 (22:17):
A man, I think I like to see Hawks. Okay,
I like to see you.

Speaker 1 (22:21):
Got a score prediction.

Speaker 3 (22:22):
No, it's gonna be alet game. I think it's gonna
be a close.

Speaker 1 (22:25):
Guy though, Yeah, if it's gonna be close, I want
points on the board, though, I don't want seventy ten.
Like you know, the Patriots got out of out of Denver.

Speaker 3 (22:33):
I want ms say something like that, Yeah we never
lived there. I love that. Appreciate you love respect, man. Indeed,
