Speaker 1 (00:00):
Where's the champagne. We can't do this, you can't.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Sober.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
Here's the deal. We've been to Radio Rold a bunch
of times before and it always looks the same. It's
early in the week, it is, so I'm excited that
we get to do our show from Radio Row all
week long.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
So you're getting super Bowl content.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
We're talking women's sports, super Bowl content, all the things
here on the show. Twice as we walked in, people
stopped and asked you Mel for autographs, Like I didn't
even walk anywhere.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
With this woman.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
Well it was excuse me, can I talk to you?
Thank you for the work you do in the community.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
It wasn't just the autographs.
Speaker 4 (00:47):
But you know what I noticed people responding to nowadays,
it's my hair.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
It's the bus down. Why did you tell me here?
What you know?
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Me long enough?
Speaker 2 (00:57):
I mean you like this attention? You like it, don't you?
It's a little awkward for me. You know me, I
don't love being the city.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
Well then why each time I'm around you your hair
gets longer and longer.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
The middle of your back. Now that's not what I'm like.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
I think you love the attention. Actually, hair's at her
butt right.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
No, it is. I saw one of my mentees just
a minute ago, Simone was here. I saw that brown
girl's dream.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
It's so good to see these women out here doing
what we inspire them to do.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Like we had something to do with it. We got
to take our credit.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
Well, you definitely did, especially with your wonderful foundation, which
is helping so many young women gain confidence in themselves,
develop some life skills, find they voice, find their voice,
papologize sportship. I've been a mentor more than a few times.
I've enjoyed this six experience. So yeah, when you see
one of your mentees here, that is it makes a testament.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
It's a testament to the work that we've been doing,
how long we've been working in sports. And it also
reminds me of Super Bowl times dream yesteryear. Oh, I mean,
I've come a long way from mentoring.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
You have. I just told that great story about you
impacting the youth. Let's talk about I think this was
the first Super Bowl we were at together. Yep, it
was okay, now picture it sicily, no more like picture
it New York City.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
I believe that's where it was. It was cold. It
was cold. I feel like this may have been twenty thirteen,
twenty fourteen, twenty fourteen sounds right.
Speaker 4 (02:23):
Okay, twenty thirteen or fourteen roundabouts, and this is and
you know, you all can look it up because I
was there.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
Water running water, electricity.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
People had electricity, people had cars, people on bay. No
no one bugging, and so, uh, the super Bowl was
at MetLife we went to we were at ESPN, so
it was another time, another lifetime ago. And ESPN super
Bowl party was in New York. They have a super
Bowl party every super Bowl and we go to this party.
(02:57):
And that is what If you want to know why
I always make up a middle name for you, let
me tell you what Carrie Latanya Jenkins Champion did at
the super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
There was that feels a little racist. I just want
to say.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
She said, she seems to be racial profile anyone with
the name Latanya out there.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
Listen, That's what I saw. The full la and you
come out. So we're at the super Bowl party and
Carrie is just mingling and smiling and making her way
across the room.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
And social butterfly she was. You were absolutely a social butterfly.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
We were there to have a good time, having a
good time, having a great time, and Carrie says hello
to an athlete that we both know, Brand Marshall.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
Good dude, we Brandon Marshall. He's an acquired taste and
I love him. Yes, he makes us. People may not
feel the same way. He's an acquired tase. He's done
a lot of work. We just want to put that
in there. Shout out to Brandon Marshall. We are now friends,
very cool friends. We can call in text and say hi.
So at the time I didn't know him that well,
and he had did first take earlier. I just want
to set the second stage the saying asily that I
(04:07):
wanted to thank him for coming on the show.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
You did.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
So he is talking to at the time another ESPN personality. No,
I won't say who it is because I'm not trying
to be messy. I'm gonna let Carrie tell her own story.
What the days if she chooses in the book choose
us to yes, save it, save it for the memoir,
the tell all. So Carrie just very nicely and politely,
as she mentioned Brandon had been on the show, just
goes as he's talking to this other ESPN personality and
(04:31):
says hello, Hello.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
That was it. It was just like, hey, how you doing.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
You was an in and out hello, a quick in
and out, and then that little quick in and out
turned into something completely different.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
She rolled up on me and she was like, I'm
tired of you cutting me off every time I'm around you.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
You think you better than me, and I'm tired of it.
And I and I just was like, wait, where's this
coming from? But you have been feeling this energy from
this person? Yeah, because I had been trying to be
nice to her, I didn't realize she hated.
Speaker 4 (04:57):
Me, right, and I I think I had my back turn,
so I didn't see all of the confrontation. I'm mingling
myself and next thing I know, it's just like I
just see like asticuffs, a little ruckus, a little ruckus
going down fisticuffs.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Not necessarily it.
Speaker 4 (05:14):
Was not fisticuff scratch, but I know, I tell you
what I ate the one, two, three, four, five or
the six?
Speaker 3 (05:21):
She okay, so long story short, too late. She walked
up on me and she just start going on with me.
And I didn't know where.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Because I was yeah, because I didn't even see what she.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
Thought that I was going to take it. So I
don't know what came over me. I absolutely know what
came over me. It's in my gut, it's in my
it's intestinal. The the the Lakeisha Jenkins is intest that's
what carried Lakeisha Ja Jenkins walked up to her and said,
if you want it, I got it.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
She did, I have the time to tell you. What
you're not gonna do. What you're not gonna do is
talk to me crazy. I don't check me boo.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
No one will continue hype me up by And I was.
I was with the SHO followed her all the way
around this entire party, and I was yet and she
was like this big and I was like on her,
like try me today today. I want to you gonna
end up on the block. I said, you started it,
I'm finishing it. You want to go, it's me let's go.
And she was like, you're crazy. I was like, correct,
(06:13):
you you found the button.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
And then that's what I knew.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
I mean, if I didn't know already, I was like, oh,
I can roll with carry anywhere ever, because you need
that one person and your crew and your click or
even your bestie, like if y'all go into a club.
Because I'm from that era of we go somewhere, somebody
starts to mess with one of us. They started messing
with all of us. That's how we roll. We can't
stand stupidity. We are ready to throw hands and we
look great, you know what, And we looked great for
(06:39):
our age and then that That is one of my
favorite super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
Please hopefully we won't have any of those stories. What
I do believe we will have is a good time.
We're much more mature. There's running water, there's running water,
there's cars, there's all kinds of things that are happening today.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Yeah, I mean, I'm looking forward to the super Bowl
in general. I really am the game itself for just
being at the here.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
The atmosphere is always nice to lead up, which is
where we're at right now, is always nice. As I
look around, you guys are probably trying to see what
we're gonna look at.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
We'll kind of show your view.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
It's just a lot of different media tents and and
different outlets that are here, and people doing interview pre
interviews talking about who's gonna win. But I'm looking forward
to that type of environment, catching up with old friends,
but more this bad bunny.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
Is it just me? Or is he fine, And do
I have a crush on him? Is it me? He is?
He does something to my armpits, like they get he.
Speaker 4 (07:26):
Makes some sweat a little bit that perspiration or perspiration
the first time.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
That's fine, just a little of it, just a little
of it. Whatever you said is right. I'm like, hey,
bad bunny, not smelly, but like.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
Because you're you're deodorant holds up people my my is
it my permones? Is that a word? But I get
it though, I get the appeals beautiful. He not only
seems sweet, he does, but he also seeing somebody with
somebody with conviction, and I think him having these convictions.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
Is what boundaries discipline, passion.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
He's the biggest would you say he's the biggest music
start in the world right now?
Speaker 2 (08:04):
He's been for a while.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
I think we're just late late on the on that boat,
right But he has been for a while, and I
think it's appropriate that he is hosting, I mean the
halftime show. I think what he said when he won
the Grammys. I didn't watch because I don't watch the Grammys.
I watched the g I actually watched the whole thing.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
And you spend two and a half hours doing what
and I've.
Speaker 4 (08:24):
Spent two and a half hours saying who who that
they got music?
Speaker 3 (08:27):
She asked me who Olivia Dean was, and I closed
the book on her, I memed her Davis, Yeah, where
are you being?
Speaker 2 (08:37):
I have no idea the internet start that's where you've been. Well,
that's part of it.
Speaker 4 (08:41):
But it feels like my musical sort of my musical
not necessarily taste, but me learning about new music. I
think learning about new music these days it's just a
much different you know, it's a much different thing than
when we grew up, Like I don't listen to the radio,
Like what is the systems that you don't people find
out your things?
Speaker 2 (09:01):
Well?
Speaker 4 (09:01):
Yeah, I mean, of course people there are suggestions and
sometimes I click on them, but I have to hear
about this person that has to be buzz and it
astounds me every single time that it'll be someone who's wildly,
enormously globally popular and I will have never heard of
this person.
Speaker 3 (09:16):
Okay, have you heard of Let me just go down
a few people. Madonna. Madonna was when I was a kid.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
Okay, yes, Kendrick Lamar, I do know Kendrick Lamar. Okay,
all right, all right, who anyone else. So I'm not
gonna lie. I didn't know about Billie Eilish until like
three years ago. Oh that's fair, Okay, Well, and that
was just because my goddaughter is.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
She told me that fair? Okay?
Speaker 4 (09:40):
Is that fair? I just discovered Sabrina Carpenter last year?
Is that borderline?
Speaker 2 (09:47):
Sure?
Speaker 5 (09:48):
Sure?
Speaker 2 (09:50):
And they're there.
Speaker 4 (09:50):
Then there are people who I already were familiar with,
and I just didn't know they had new, new new.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
Word music like you. I had no doubt. Yeah, I
know I did. He had like he didn't want to
get it. He was out there by himself.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
My man had on some tight hoop shorts.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
He had on some underwear, and I liked it.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
Sorry, Haley on some boxes.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
Beas is fine. And I love his music.
Speaker 4 (10:18):
I always loved his music, and so that's why I
was really disappointed in myself, Like how did I not
know that he had new stuff or newer I should
say stuff.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
I knew who Harry Styles was. Thank you very much? Okay,
good see came out there.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
Okay, don't don't do it all right, that's embarrassed I felt.
But did you enjoy the show though? Actually the show
was really good? I share your girlfriend, my inspiration. Yes,
she was given a lifetime I believe award, a lifetime
achievement award.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
And Sharon was out there like, I am eighty years old.
I don't know what to do. I'm just I'm just
out here. What does that mean?
Speaker 4 (10:50):
When she she didn't know she was supposed to announce
Record of the Year, and so.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
They probably told her she should care less, and she
could care less.
Speaker 4 (10:58):
She was out there with such a care free just
I don't give a damn. I've been here a long time.
I've been through some stuff. I'm too old spirit.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
She's arrived where we have got there, and so she's
talking about her career and all this.
Speaker 4 (11:12):
Anyway, she's supposed to announce the Record of the Year,
which was Luther by Kendrick Lamar and Siza, and it
said she opens up the envelope and she just waiting
and looking at people, and she was like, oh, I
thought there.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
Was no showing on the screen who won? Read this.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
She opens the envelope and then she was like, and
the winner is Luther Vandross. And I'm like, the way
I fell out, the way me and America positively lost it.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
I didn't know that yes, she said Luther Vandross and
even Kendrick Lamar was laughing, like, my god, it was amazing. Meanwhile,
Luther and the Great Beyond, like he's in the Great Beyond.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
He's like with those who don't know longer with her
has gone to heaven some time ago.
Speaker 4 (12:00):
Yes, he's up there singing and having a body. Oh yeah,
weally need you know what though.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
The I thought the Grammys were great just because the
response from people online. That's when you start. That's how
I watch everything anyway. You just watched the clips and
clips and what everyone says. That's why I fell in
love with Bad Bunny, and I was like, you're beautiful
and I'm looking forward to your performance especially yeah, and
because he was just like we're all one, We're all people.
How many Americans don't know? I'm sure they know now
because of him. I mean, he's actually brought he's literally
(12:30):
brought attention to the fact that Puerto Ricans are Americans
like you, like he's That's the one thing that he's
probably done because of the argument of like how we
don't want the super Bowl to be.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
The way all Americans, you know what I.
Speaker 4 (12:42):
Mean, people who do not know that Puerto Rico isn't well.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
If you don't travel there, you wouldn't know that. You
don't need a passport.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
Do you remember when we went to Puerto Rico that
one time and we I found a boyfriend.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
Do you remember. We won't talk about that, but remember
that one time.
Speaker 4 (12:56):
I do remember that he was he was like he
played basketball there and he was he was.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
I forgot his name, he really his name. I was
the love for at least twenty four hours. And that's
for you. That's really a long time. It didn't last
once we.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
Left the island. Shocking, Yeah, shocking, but it was great anyway.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
I digress. But I love Puerto Rico. I love what
he is doing. I love that he is trying to
bring us all together. I think his performance is going
to be more about unity, and I think that it's
also going to be deeply surprised.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
That he'll do anything political.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
Of course he will, but it'll it'll speak about unity,
being one as opposed to separates, supposed to like, he's
not going to be divisive. He's going to be like
we all are one, and and the beauty of who
he is. He does not really speak English, and he
tries and then he goes in the middle of it.
He just starts speaking Spanish. Lemon dan yo, But my man,
big bunny, do I bless Espanol? But he thought, so
I blessed that Spanol. You said you practiced it, so
(13:48):
you told Spanish. Okay, I'm sketty, yeah, as Jamel as me.
Speaker 4 (13:55):
The no spio not a liar. Okay, see, I can
I understand what you're saying. Well, what he'll do to
your point about the Spanglish is much like he did
in his Grammy was acceptance ords.
Speaker 2 (14:08):
He was like, don't I don't know what the English
word is for that, So I'm just saying it.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
Is correct, yes, which is how I speak my Spanglish.
Oh yeah, you had a you know what I think
is also very interesting.
Speaker 1 (14:16):
Shout out to.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
Rob Parker walking past.
Speaker 5 (14:19):
We're Rob.
Speaker 4 (14:20):
Shout out to Rob Parker. We're doing a lot, which
is the beauty of the super Bowl. It's like you
on radio road becomes a family. You were like, hey, yes,
I had no Rob since I was seventeen years old.
By the way, that's a funny story for another.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
Day, another day.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
Yes, So what is what is what is add kicking
in what I believe you had to take away. You
had a hero and a villain. I do you have
a You had a hero? I did, Grammy, I do
you have a hero? We love to do this. We
love to say someone who's our hero? And you had
a hero?
Speaker 2 (14:46):
Who is that?
Speaker 4 (14:47):
I don't want to go mention a hero with share
who I just talked about, but Vang I was like,
do a share. Don't care about these people, but my
big hero is Trevor Noah. This is the last year
that he will host the Grammys, and because the Grammys
is moving from CBS to ABC.
Speaker 2 (15:02):
And I thought that one what he does is not easy.
Speaker 4 (15:06):
And he took some rib shots at the political climate
and Donald Trump wants to suit him now, which to
me only means that he did his job.
Speaker 2 (15:13):
But he was an excellent host.
Speaker 4 (15:15):
He's got such a great personality and it was in
a way a little sad to see the end of
his time gone with most interesting.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
He was very good.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
I'm going to push back on him being a hero.
Everyone says that about him when he is in these moments,
and I guess it is because I don't want to
be a hypocrite. I guess it is what you do
with your platform. But if I'm gonna keep it a bug.
People who have met him behind the scenes in other
ways are like, he's very problematic. Really, isn't the guy
that the people with the cause. My friend was a
(15:45):
flight attendant, and you can say this about anybody. You
can say this about me. You can say about Jamal
because sometimes she's not friendly. Catch them on a day,
catch him in a moment. But she's like on a
flight to South Africa he was on, she said he
was the worst, and I was just like, really.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
He's the worst.
Speaker 3 (16:00):
And that's a long flight to be the worst. Thing,
Like you, like, you have twelve to fourteen hours. You
could get nice at least for two to three hours.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
Right, you can at least fake it when you first
get there.
Speaker 3 (16:08):
I don't know, and I don't and I hate to
like disclose that information, but I've heard stories like that
on multiple platforms about him.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
That still doesn't mean two things can't be true.
Speaker 3 (16:18):
One thing being he really does take incredible risk and
he is he does have a great spirit.
Speaker 4 (16:23):
And I often say really talented people behind the scenes
are like kind of same, not the best and not.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
The best of what to work.
Speaker 4 (16:30):
I am I'm that is not you, you know, though
you're extremely talented.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
Yeah, but I can the requirements to meet the level
or expectations are sometimes not realistic.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
So there, no, I get it.
Speaker 3 (16:42):
But with that being said, I'm not saying that about me,
but I'm saying he still does. I would say, yes,
he could be a hero. Two things can be true,
and he could be personated as job.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
Right, that's just a good look at you, UCLA. But yeah,
he was excellent. He also has an excellent book, Born
a Crime, which is really fantastic. But let's pivot a
moment here because we have a little F and F
history that's about to be made.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
And history is about to be made.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
We're going to welcome I guess, the first guest we
have ever had about to have a guest on FNF.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
The first time we have ever had a guess.
Speaker 3 (17:20):
And it's apropos because this guest, without telling you who
she is, she has arguably one of the most viral
videos when it comes to being a woman covering sports,
and it pretty much set the tone for how women
feel about how they are talked about when we are
talking about is.
Speaker 2 (17:41):
Somebody getting this right now? She just worked she knew.
She came on, she turked, she knew. Very talented. That's
her spirit. And she is a legend to me.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
She was a legend before we even knew her. Like
she had a legacy ahead of herself. So everybody give
it up for Katie Nolan, work.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
Show and serious coming in the show, coming to the show.
Speaker 1 (18:06):
I don't know why.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
Everyone sit down, Come on, it's been too long. Okay.
Two things. One, congratulations on the engagement, because it's been
a while.
Speaker 5 (18:20):
She engaged for like five years.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
I just never did it publicly. Okay, you said, She's like.
Speaker 1 (18:27):
Thank you, ring for you you got to ring before kindle,
you know what.
Speaker 6 (18:33):
Wow, eventually we're gonna get married. I think I just
don't know when you're.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
Where it is. It a busyness things.
Speaker 6 (18:41):
It's an overwhelming and I'm not that pressed about It's like, uh,
we'll get to it eventually. I think the strongest argument
for me that people have been making is like, I'm
screwing myself over because when I meet people in the
future and say we've been married for blank years, I'm
gonna have stolen these years from myself.
Speaker 5 (18:58):
You know, was.
Speaker 4 (18:59):
Just just say, how do you guys it's just stressful.
Speaker 2 (19:04):
Why why don't you just elope then have a big party.
Speaker 6 (19:06):
That's because I'll never have the party unless I plan
it ahead of time.
Speaker 5 (19:11):
You know, we'll get to it. We can do this
off air.
Speaker 3 (19:13):
So no, I have two things to ask right away. One,
as we introduce you. We talked about this that video,
that epic video that when we were all at esp
and made.
Speaker 6 (19:22):
R p uh a lovely time in ways, you know,
and then a difficult time in other ways.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
I think that's a good explanation.
Speaker 6 (19:34):
But they're still doing it the shout out they technically
yeah kinda yeah. But that video the women in sports
media video, yes, yeah sports Yeah.
Speaker 3 (19:43):
That's like are you would be one of the most
watched videos ever, so creative, so thought by you, so
actually apropos and will never not be out of style.
Speaker 5 (19:51):
Yeah, unfortunately unfortunate.
Speaker 6 (19:53):
Fortunately yeah, yeah, for all of its goods and bads
that we all had at that company.
Speaker 5 (19:59):
I you think, like I got.
Speaker 6 (20:00):
To meet some of the best women that work in sports,
Like it was the coolest time it was in terms
of like shooting that video, I don't know, looking around
and being like look.
Speaker 2 (20:10):
At all these No, that venue was crazy and you're acting.
Chops were amazing. They were amazing, she said, she said,
read and God said, you got it. I'm ready nailed it.
Speaker 5 (20:23):
She was ready for her close up. Now she nailed it.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
To your point, for it was one of the best
jobs I've ever had thus far, because I meet a
lot of great friends. I've learned how to be who
I am to this day in terms of a professional
and then.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
Look and some of it's bad, and that just what
life is.
Speaker 5 (20:38):
That's just life.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
That's there's no hard feelings. Literally, I zero have zero
heart feelings.
Speaker 4 (20:43):
Same I think people sometimes just because we may be
critical here and there of ESPN, people think there's some
kind of bitterness and it's not like I always say
people is to tell people, that's the longest job I've
ever had.
Speaker 2 (20:54):
It's the best job I've ever had.
Speaker 4 (20:56):
The reporter and journalist I was when I walked in
there six versus who I was in twenty eighteen, just
in this media climate was a million times better. And
so the company helped me sharpen in all the ways
that I needed to sharpen Along those same lines, though,
I'm curious, Katie, how did you find the post ESPN
pivot well.
Speaker 6 (21:17):
It happened to coincide with that global pandemic that hit us.
So twenty twenty was sort of a year of like
figuring out what.
Speaker 5 (21:27):
I wanted to keep doing.
Speaker 6 (21:28):
And I think once ESPN became what it was, which
was that they were like, we don't we wanted to,
I think it was like a low ball offer that
I was like, it's I don't want to stay here,
so I'm not working on something I love so much
that I want to stick around at this company. I'd
rather just go do something else. I needed time to
fall back in love with sports. I think for me,
like so much of my approach to sports media has
(21:51):
been like from a fan perspective.
Speaker 5 (21:52):
I grew up in Boston.
Speaker 6 (21:53):
Obviously, it's like in our blood that you've got to
love every Boston team. And I just think after working
in sports for however many years it had been at
that point, five to seven, whatever it was, I was
like kind of losing touch with like the part of
me that wanted to care and love and watch sports,
and so I think I just needed took some time away.
(22:13):
Like I took some time off of sports, which was crazy.
There was a football season I did not pay attention all.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
But you needed that.
Speaker 5 (22:21):
I needed it.
Speaker 6 (22:21):
I needed to like come back to it and not
like from my own desire to come back to it,
instead of feeling like I needed to watch it and
know everything about it and I needed to make sure
I and so I like took time away and then
truly missed it and found my way back to it
naturally like a fan. And I think because of that
(22:41):
now when I approach the stuff, I'm doing it serious.
Speaker 5 (22:44):
It's like from a place of not media, but like fandom.
Speaker 6 (22:50):
It's like very much connected to the heart of it,
and like the hoping that your team wins.
Speaker 5 (22:55):
No idea. My team was gonna make it to the
super Bowl again. Very convenient for me my first time
back at radio row. They're back in the super Bowl.
Very happy about that. Thank you.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
Yeah, yeah, perfect time. I want to give you.
Speaker 3 (23:08):
I want to tell you something and I think that
people don't do this in our business and you and
you take this just how you receive it. You prior
to even really coming to ESPN, you had a name
and made a name for yourself.
Speaker 2 (23:20):
You had one to believe in, Emmy. You were people
were looking forward to who you were, and you had
all of these expectations and you came in there just
like I just want to have fun.
Speaker 3 (23:28):
I just want to do my job. And everyone was like,
you know a bit of a like what is she
going to be like? And what I and what I
appreciate about you is being like I took some time
off there.
Speaker 2 (23:38):
This this world can drain us.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
What we sometimes our own expectations for ourselves are so
so hard to live up to, and it can drain us.
And if you can take a beat and come back
and figure out why you love it, because you're right
being I always say this. Jamel and I argue because
I don't know if you read recently Jamel had yelled
at an old lady.
Speaker 2 (23:59):
For being a fan in the locker room. You see
that one a.
Speaker 5 (24:02):
Black I did see that, Jamel, and I wasn't going
to bring it.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
Almost guy kicked out of the cookout and she did that.
Speaker 5 (24:09):
She's like, it's just really not professional.
Speaker 3 (24:10):
It's just really not professional. You're not supposed to be
a fan. I'm like, the hell, you're not supposed to
be a fan. That's somebody's mama.
Speaker 2 (24:15):
Be nice to her. I love me some, Lindo.
Speaker 3 (24:18):
And then Jamel will go into how she's met with
her and they've they've broken bread and now we love
each other.
Speaker 6 (24:26):
Get I understand where you're coming from too, because I
I you know, it is the line that I blurred
that probably gets kind of annoying to a reporter that like,
I am a fan first, I'm not. I studied PR
it's a journalism background, but I'm not like a journalist
like that. And I but I get why in that room.
It's like you're supposed to be here to for me.
(24:47):
My thing was that it made us see a side
of that coach we weren't gonna see no other. But
I do understand your and listen at a time like
this standing up for journalism. I'm never gonna be mad at.
Speaker 2 (24:59):
You, you know what.
Speaker 4 (25:00):
As I told carry, it was the wrong time to
make what is a practical point, and I'm okay, Like
I got to win at Escum.
Speaker 5 (25:09):
You always a good understanding.
Speaker 2 (25:12):
You're so good.
Speaker 3 (25:13):
I don't no, You're like, you know what, It's not
always important to be right in that moment.
Speaker 4 (25:23):
But Katie, you said something really important, and that is
about connecting with fandom. I did specifically get into journalism
to do sports journalism. Because I have love of the
game and of the characters of the game and the
storytelling all those things.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
I wanted to tell stories.
Speaker 4 (25:38):
But nevertheless, though, there is a part of you that
I think for fans to relate to you, that you
have to tap into what you're talking about it talking
about in terms of relating to being a fan. So
I want to ask you, though, now that you are
back in this radio row scene, how does it feel
for you to be here and the Patriots are here?
Like a lot of people don't know you know how
(25:59):
to feel about it, because it's like people Patriots.
Speaker 2 (26:06):
Knowing.
Speaker 6 (26:06):
Isn't it funny that the cheap we finally were like
the Chiefs and they were out and then the pats
are like, we're back.
Speaker 5 (26:12):
No, I like, I'm excited. It's like a new look Patriots.
Speaker 6 (26:16):
I mean, it's Mike Rabel, who I got your root
for as a Patriot before, and now he's the coach.
Speaker 5 (26:22):
Drake May amazing.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (26:24):
Playoffs have been a little rocky, but we've been winning,
which is all that it. And we I can say
we because I.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
Just about it's over.
Speaker 5 (26:33):
It's honestly, it's overwhelming to be back.
Speaker 6 (26:34):
When they're back because it's like I was kind of
hoping to be able to just like, Okay, I'll just
go back to the super Bowl.
Speaker 5 (26:39):
Who cares who wins yet? And then they're like, oh,
the Pats are back in it. You know, like I can't.
Speaker 6 (26:46):
Help myself care like I have to care about it
a little too much.
Speaker 3 (26:51):
We we were wondering and and and we were wondering
your thoughts on bad Bunny performing.
Speaker 2 (26:56):
I'm excited.
Speaker 5 (26:56):
I think everybody's being really weird about it.
Speaker 6 (26:59):
I like, I'm like embarrassed for the people that are
this upset about It's a fifteen minute concert.
Speaker 4 (27:04):
Like mom day to relax, It's just eat your seven
layer dip and just watch it.
Speaker 2 (27:09):
It's it's like.
Speaker 6 (27:10):
Really alarmed by how much people like, listen, We've watched
plenty of bad halftime shows. We're afterwards, we all go
like that's kind of stunk, or like, I've got my
thoughts on But the fact that.
Speaker 5 (27:20):
It preempted the actual even performance of it this year
to me, to me, in my opinion.
Speaker 6 (27:27):
Just signals that like somebody's out there trying to get
this narrative going, and it's an embarrassing narrative.
Speaker 5 (27:32):
I think it's a bad look.
Speaker 6 (27:33):
You can hate the halftime show all you want, wait
till it's over, and then share your thoughts on one
of the many social media sites you have where you can.
You're eighteen followers, let them know how you feel about
that man.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
All right, we'll do you being weird. Okay, we were
playing with you.
Speaker 3 (27:54):
Jamel's going to be she's gonna be Pat Sajack, Yes,
Yanna Black, Pat say Jack. It's called it's called guess
the position. She's going to read a quote because the
anonymous it's called guess the position. So there have been
some players in the NFL who have decided to speak
out anonymously, yeah, about how they feel about bad Bunny.
Speaker 2 (28:18):
So we're gonna we're gonna read the quote. Is going
to read the quote. You guess the position, whether it
is offense or defense.
Speaker 3 (28:25):
Okay, And if you if you want to get like,
if you don't have if it's too hard, you just
want to go offense or defense, so be it. But
if you want to go lineman, yeah, kicker, you can
you all know that you cannot.
Speaker 1 (28:38):
Thereyous were they from.
Speaker 5 (28:40):
The teams in the Super Bowl or were they for.
Speaker 2 (28:44):
What they do? They do?
Speaker 4 (28:45):
Tell you curious the pieces in the athletic as you mentioned,
they tell you what conference and whether or not their
offensive defense, but they.
Speaker 3 (28:51):
Don't tell you they talk about like that NORMALMS fan.
Speaker 5 (28:57):
Season season.
Speaker 4 (28:59):
Yeah, here's the first quote. I don't even know who
Bad Bunny is. I always think it should be an American.
I think they're tried too hard with this international stuff.
And that was said by NFC offensive player. So guess
the position.
Speaker 5 (29:14):
Okay, I'm gonna guess that that was said by a
running back.
Speaker 6 (29:17):
It was said by somebody who's been hit a lot,
because they've clearly forgotten that Puerto Rico is America.
Speaker 2 (29:25):
Bad Bunney is an American.
Speaker 5 (29:26):
He is an American.
Speaker 4 (29:27):
You know, it's soparently hateful to an American. What's so
funny is Bad Bunny is an American and Nicki Minaj
is not anyway doing that.
Speaker 2 (29:36):
What you will?
Speaker 4 (29:38):
All right, here's another one. This is from an NFC
offensive player as well. Okay, I do not like it.
I prefer anyone who's synonymous with football and football culture.
I feel like there's tons of artists out there who
are fans of the game.
Speaker 6 (29:51):
And NFC offensive player wants it to be somebody associated
with fans, somebody who's a fan of the game.
Speaker 5 (29:59):
Well, how do you know bad bunny to like football?
What do you know about that bunny?
Speaker 3 (30:02):
They?
Speaker 5 (30:03):
Oh, I don't know. Let's say that that.
Speaker 2 (30:04):
Was a quarterback.
Speaker 6 (30:06):
Yeah, nobody from special teams.
Speaker 5 (30:08):
They did not interview anybody on special teams.
Speaker 2 (30:11):
Kennedy's has to be a kicker.
Speaker 4 (30:15):
They you know what, I would guess that there would
be somebody from special teams because I don't know if
you guys saw that, uh that that story that was
done about the political affiliations and pretty much every kicker
in the NFL as a Republican. All right, So this
one was from again, man, the NFC. Okay, here you go,
(30:38):
Here you go, another NFC defensive player. This is this
Hamel defense.
Speaker 2 (30:44):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (30:45):
They said they would prefer to see Florence and the Machine.
Speaker 2 (30:48):
But I don't know what everybody would would rock with that.
Speaker 5 (30:52):
Okay, Now see.
Speaker 6 (30:55):
This sounds like somebody that just wants to let everybody
know they really like Florence in the Machine.
Speaker 5 (30:59):
Okay, that's that's like a less hateful.
Speaker 2 (31:01):
Okay, Okay, I don't know what I said.
Speaker 5 (31:04):
You're just going like, like Florence and the machine.
Speaker 3 (31:07):
Okay, so we got like just a minute left, right,
So I want to tell you I really truly appreciate
you playing this game with us. Two things are happening
right now. Jamel I t Jamel up to be pats
a Jack. That was her audition. She's not gonna make it.
We're not gonna make it.
Speaker 2 (31:22):
I think you. Yeah, this was I'm watching a game.
Speaker 5 (31:27):
I would watch your game.
Speaker 3 (31:28):
Ja.
Speaker 5 (31:28):
I would watch anything Jamel ever does. I'd watch it
once a month. I'd watch it once a month to
check it on the growth as a host. And then
if she if I noticed that she would she would.
She would rise to the occasional she would get a car,
and then I would tune in every day. That's just maybe.
I'd probably DVR so maybe watch on a delay, but
I would. I would watch it. And if at any
point you said the ratings were hurting, I'd watch it
(31:50):
every day.
Speaker 2 (31:51):
Super Bow.
Speaker 5 (31:52):
The Patriots have to win the Super Bowl. They have to.
Speaker 2 (31:55):
I think.
Speaker 5 (31:55):
I know everybody during the NFC Championship was like, whoever wins,
this is gonna win the Super Bowl. And yeah, maybe
they get their butts kicked. I don't know.
Speaker 6 (32:02):
I think they've had so many lucky luck keeps breaking
their way, and I just feel like that can't just
end at the super Bowl. So I don't know what's
gonna happen, but deep in my heart, I really think
the Patriots are gonna win.
Speaker 3 (32:16):
So listen, I gotta be honest with you. I love
me some Brady. I don't care if he wears a
red hat. Well, well, we don't know if Brady is actually.
Speaker 2 (32:24):
I just love him. Yeah, say he is, and I
don't care. I love you Tom. I love you Tom.
I'll be right there with you. Do you. I'll give Boatoks,
I'll do I'll give Marlago face with you, do all
the things. I love you.
Speaker 3 (32:38):
Look like, don't talk about that man like that was
so rude until the folks when they can listen to
your show.
Speaker 5 (32:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (32:46):
Fan Service is on Serious XM, mad Dog Radio, Mad
