Cam I begin with you the Drake May, Sam Darnold thing.
We can't escape a quarterbacks are all the Ray but

specifically New England has to be happy with how fast
their second year guy has developed ahead of being on
the biggest stage of his career.

Jamie, the Patriots are a static with Drake May and
let me take you back to draft day. I was
in the Patriots facility and there were some questions about
whether they would take dra May or take a big
bag offer to trade back. Elliott Wolfe said they were
never close to trading that number three overall pick. He
told me that this week he's a de facto general
manager there, and he said there.

Was a few reasons.

One, the offers weren't tantalizing as maybe people would anticipate.
They started to debate we would trade back, maybe we
get Joe All or Mileak neighbors. But every single draft
we would be trying to find Drake May, and there
aren't a lot of Drake May's two They were sold
on Drake May the man, the competitor. There were some
questions about his offense and how quickly the fit would

have with scheme coming from North Carolina, but they never
had any doubts about Drake May the dude. And that's
why Mike Vrabel said this week Drake May was one
of the biggest reasons he.

Wanted to become the Patriots. Head coach.

Stefan Dick said the match of of Drake May has
been unlike any young quarterback he has seen calling him
a mini inspiration and on Drake May's right shoulder, that's
got all the buzz. He fully participated in practice on Wednesday.
It sounds like he is going to be a full
go to throw that deep ball.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
I talked to one of his receivers, Pop Douglas. He said, he.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
Looked just like normal Drake May this week, and we
expect him to look like the Drake May in the
regular season, who was the best deep ball thrower and
led the NFL and complete some percentage. And so Drake
May was here and drafted for these moments, and they
think that big game Drake May shows up on Sunday
now to Omar Ruiz on the other quarterback in this matchup.

Yeah, both of these quarterbacks to number three overall pick
in their respective draft. Sam Darnold's journey been well documented.
His story of resilience one of these stories of the
Super Bowl. He said that's one of the reasons why
he loves football, because.
Speaker 4 (02:55):
You can make mistakes and then learn from them.
Speaker 5 (02:58):
He said, early in his career he was so hard
on himself. But he said quote from Jerry Rice appropriately
enough here in the Bay Area, really resonated with him
that said, you're never going to have a perfect day,
and he said he's applied that to his practices, He's
applied that to his games. He said early in his
career he was hard on himself, but he learned you
can be hard on yourself without being mad at yourself.

And that story of resilience really you can apply to
his play this season. He led the NFL in turnovers
with twenty, but in the three most important games of
the season, the last three that week eighteen for the
NFC West and number one seed of course, the divisional
round game, and then the NFC Championship game, he has
not thrown an interception. I asked his offensive coordinator, Clint

Kubiak about that turnaround, and this is what he had
to say.
Speaker 6 (03:45):
It's really easy. Sam overall just such a good decision maker,
and he's aggressive when he has to be, and when
we call a play down the field that's not there,
he knows how to check it down and get it
to our backs. So I've seen a lot of growth there.
But you know we're going to turn Sam loose.
Speaker 5 (04:00):
So Sam Darnold playing his best when they need it most.
As for that leak injury that he's been nursing. He
was limited at practice. He said he's feeling good, but
he's going to stick to his routine of rehab and treatment.
He says he wants to be feeling great ahead of practices,
and of course he wants to be feeling great, Jamie
ahead of Super Bowl Sunday.

Appreciate your dedication so much being around the team, giving

ahead of Super Bowl sixty. Kyle, there's something you bring
up as we all are ruminating about our playoff picks
in August, and oftentimes when you get stuck on something
and a decision that you have to make, you apply
what you like to call the confetti test.

Kyle? Well, I should I should give credit. I believe
it's an original creation of Daniel Jeremiah, our credit or
our colleague who does the draft. Especially so what DJ
does is when he's evaluating a prospect, if maybe he's
stuck or it's arbiturby between two guys, close your eyes
and can you really feasibly imagine this quarterback or this
player standing in the confetti at the super Bowl, having

just on the super Bowl. So whoever it may be.
It may be Lamar Jackson, it may be Zach Wilson,
it may be Baker Mayfit, it doesn't matter. It could
be Drake may So that's the Competiti test. Does it
work for you? Like can you? You're like, no way?

Remember how Seth was talking about dancing Gronk and and said,
now he's looking. Now he's and you're thinking about Caleb
and the confettio. I know we just lost Seth for
the whole hour.

He started this. He wasn't smiling, and then you started
to smiling. I was like, there's Caleb Cale there.

Well, if I were to close my eyes and I
would think of a storebook ending to any of these
quarterbacks career so far.

The one that does seem right would be am Donald
knowing all of that, he all the things that he's
been through his career, you know, overcoming all the trials
and all the tribulation throughout his NFL career. But the
one to me, guys that just seems like he's ready
for the confetti, that's Drake May.

When I saw him not know how to handle the
AFC Championship trophies, like do I take this? That to
me is is evident of a guy that is just
in another space right now.

He's just his eyes are set on a goal.

He's not really worried about the confetti when he's not
worried about the trophies. And I just think that if
I were to close my eyes and think of man,
this is a fairy toe ending, it would be Sam Donald.

guys said, they got to be Drake Man.

He's like a birthday party invitation, ready for the confetti.

Yeah, that's what I'm imagining. He was a birthday party,
I imagined, like Drake May. And he's got a little
that little hat on because he's said, you know, he's
just got the boyish vibe to him. He hurts your
face and in the pudding loard. No, that's it's not
Riss wrong, it's Sam Donold Sam Donald. Yes, because the

story is incredible. The story is amazing. We just had
Shine on here earlier and he's talking about how.

He got Jets. He got Jets. Guys, he played for

around and now he's in the super Bowl, the favorite
to win the game on Sunday. There's no better story
in all of sports than a comeback to the period.

There's no better story. I mean, I can I'm getting
I'm getting emotional now just thinking about it, the feeling.
I know what it feels like to be counted out,
to be just cast aside, to.

that good.

especially when you were touted out of the draft as

but we don't like you know more. You're in yesterday's news.
It's a comeback story for the Ages, and he gets
to do it on the grandest stage. And like I said,

it's there's nothing better. I can feel it. I can
feel Drake May. May won't shed a tear if he
wins this.

Well, there's a there's a tweet going around the week
that I don't know who sent it, but it's something
people are laughing about, and it's a picture of the
two quarterbacks at the NFL media opening night. So bring
up the picture from our show, the segment thing that
we just had, and the tweet just shows these two
pictures if you'll see them, and it just says, I
have never seen less aura in my life. And I

was like, they're just making fun of these guys because
it's not homes and it's not Brady, and they're both
kind of young, and I wouldn't call either of them
terribly charismatic in the media, probably by design because they
try to be level headed. Neither one of these guys
is going to give us a moment after the game,
I mean neither one there. Travis Kelsey's screaming Beastie Boys
lyrics is not going to happen from these guys.

It doesn't help them, Kyle that they're looking off camera.

I feel like could be better if they like actually connected.
It looks like they're actively avoiding getting their picture taken.

And maybe they are. They're not a picture taking type
of guy. Listen, Sam Donald won the NFC, and God
blessed Tom Reinaldi. There is no one better that luring
and coaxing stories out of you in the moment, and
he teed them up all buttery like Tom Renaldi style,
like this jury all you've overcome, and he's going to
the micro stamps. Yeah, you know, I was just going
to looking forward to the next game. He's not taking

any baits, he's not having that moment. And all the
last two weeks everyone's like Sam, talk about the Jets,
talk about the pants, talk about all the crap you've
been thres and I'm just kind of focused on now
and I really appreciate my time with those teams. It
ain't happening. And Drake May is like not only the
boy Scouts, like the boy Scout troop leader, you know
what I'm saying, Like he is up there scouts on
or I'm not going to say anything. I'm wholesome, And

there's not any of that. I would think we were
kind of onto something with Donald. Maybe the emotions catch
up with them and the tier and everything. But if
you're looking for postgame sound bites, or viral moments. It
ain't coming from those guys.

The closest thing we got to it with Donald this
week I thought was by omission. So when he gets
repeatedly asked about how he got here and people want
him to detegrate the Jets and they want him to.

Take knocks, the only thing he really does is he interests.

He doesn't reference his stop with the Vikings a lot,
so he eats something, he compliments Kyle Shanahan and Clint Kubiak,
and there's these names in the middle.

That he does doesn't say choc.

At least I haven't heard him be like insanely positive
about Crecy and I'm like, Okay, maybe there's something there,
But now I just feel like I'm fishing and I
don't want to do.

That because that one, the Vikings one, is way worse
than the Jets one, in my opinion. Yes, I know
why the Jets moved on with them. They had a
high draft pick and it wasn't working. The Vikings one
is like, man, he was so good for so long
and they're like, we're gonna go with nine, and they
celebrated him in the locker room.

with him yesterday here in San Francisco actually at the
Palace of Fine Arts where the awards ceremony is going

favorite movies in the twenty first century. I love it.
And yeah, the answer is the Town okay, because Seth,
I'm trying not to ruin too much of it. But
there is a scene in an interrogation room where a
Fleck is just allegedly cooked and Ham comes in and
he's just like, it's like, I'm just going to show
you that I'm tougher than you and that I know
I'm smarter than you. And he just comes just like

this isn't Towny Hopscotch anymore, dug, But I want to
say one thing. You are here today so I can
personally tell you that you are going to die in
federal prison, and so are all your friends. It's like,
whoa damn and Affleck's just sitting there taking it and
then he does fire back. But like the star of

that scene is Ham's jawline is just chewing up scenery
and he is so charismatic and so cold and telling
someone that they're going to die in federal prison is like, Okay,
these things just got escalated, and I just I love
that movie set. I'm not going to do the incredulous
thing like you're not seeing the town. It is really
good and you will get Okay.

The other great one, the scene ceiling is in the
bar with Blake Lively brings out the dollar bill and
she's like, hey, mister one dollar Like her accent is commitment,
and he is incredible. He brings out that dollar bill
and then he really gets under her skin because her
daughter is is really in the throes of it, her
daughter with Ben Affleck, and it's got so good. Yeah,

you watch it very different than the Bride, Like it
really shows his range.

as he prepares to host the award show tonight, the
fifteenth annual NFL Honor ceremony, which will take place at
the historic Palace of Fine Arts right here in San Francisco.

He of many words, What is the one word that
you would use to describe your hosting job for NFL Honors.
Speaker 10 (17:08):
The hosting job is an honor. I mean, that's simply
what it is.

It's great.
Speaker 10 (17:12):
I mean, it's a wonderful night. We celebrate the NFL
that we all love. Best players are here, it's fantastic.
My hosting ability adequate, which is you know that's I
aim for adequate. That way, if I vault over that bar,
I get to passable, I get to good. Every now
and again, I'll scrape the bottom of exceptional.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
Looking back at the twenty twenty five regular season, there
was kind of a parallel to a lot of Hollywood
drama that happened, and now it's transferring. I think it
was one battle after another nice excellent. When it comes
to honors, do you have an award a category that
you think people are going to gasp audibly at when
you are a part of announcing.
Speaker 10 (17:57):
That is a good question. I mean, here's the thing
about this season, it was so it was so haphazard.
I mean, the I don't I think if anybody had
bet that the Seahawks and the and the and the
Patriots at the beginning of the season, they probably would be
in for a big payout. It felt in many ways
like a changing in the guard. But there were some
pretty big milestones. I mean, when you look at the

sack record falling this year, and that was pretty great.
When you look at the quarterbacks that came out. Obviously
Darnald and Mayor are the ones in the in the
big game, but even the old standbys, you know, it's
it's it was a very transitional year. And that's what
I appreciated about it. And that's what happens in the
NFL every so often. It's nice to have a Super
Bowl that doesn't have the Eagles and the Chiefs in it,

even though I'm a Chiefs fan, right, but it's nice
to see some.
Speaker 4 (18:42):
New blood in it.
Speaker 10 (18:43):
Even if that blood is the reconstituted blood of the Patriots.
Speaker 7 (18:48):
But it's new characters, so it's allowed.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
I guess what's what takes more preparation for hosting Saturday
Night Live or NFL.
Speaker 10 (18:55):
Honors Saturday Night Live pretty pretty much just because there's
a lot more moving parts this has been written, and
how it has its own internal velocity that kind of
carries it through.

Through the evening.

And it's also the week in Super Bowl, so everybody's here,
everybody's excited. It's kind of got a built in enthusiasm
and energy to it, and like I said, it's it's
really nice to I think certainly for the NFO community,
but also for the fans and the people that support
the players. It's really nice to see them, you know,
get there, get a little shine, and.

To feel ultimately prepared for it.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
You have just watched football season long, so I'm sure
your golden on that.
Speaker 10 (19:33):
I did watch a lot of football this year. I
was working on a project in Winnipeg where the average
temperature was minus forever and it was Sunday's were a
very nice respite from that.
Speaker 7 (19:47):
Here's a question for you.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
Super Bowl commercials, for some people are as much a
part of the game as the actual competition themselves. As
a man who's had a brusture two in the advertising world,
do you have a theme of a Super Bowl commercial
that you mark is one of your some of your favorites.
Speaker 10 (20:02):
That's a good question, you know. I was always a
big fan of the like event ones. Remember there used
to be this thing called the bud Bowl where Budweiser
played bud Light and like the bottles would go. I
thought those were awesome, and I think that, uh, I
think those are always fun. It's it's a it's a
it's a one of a kind event. So whenever they
do the one of the kind ads, I really like those,
and then the other ones I really like are And

not to be a homer because anazer Bush is from
Saint Louis, but when they would do the like super
sentimental ones with the Clydesdale's and like the Baby Clydesdale.

Have you seen this year's Oh my gosh, how do
you feel about the commercials being leaked in advanced leaked?
Speaker 4 (20:38):
That's garbage. Don't do that right.
Speaker 10 (20:40):
They were always supposed to be You see them on
Sunday and then you talk about them in USA today
the next day. And that's how it was. That's how
it was when I was growing up. I don't like
this leak them online stuff.

Well, when you see this year's for Anheuser Busch, forget
about it your eyes because there's a there's a new
animal introduced. Oh boy, and it's spectacular. Okay, it will
make you feel things which all commercials need to right.
Last question for you, who in the entire Chiefs organization
would you want to play in a movie?

Taylor Swift that she does it.

Technically she's not on the payroll, so and I'm not sure, just.

Whether it's whether it be from mister Hunt.

Well, I've seen you know, Look, I've seen the trailer
for the John Madden movie with Nicholas Cages John Madden.

I mean, to see what Mike Ribels accomplished in the
first season me in there. I mean, he's my boy
and you're always rooting for him. But let's be honest,
the expectation this year was maybe five hundred something like
that would be a nine, and eight would have.

Thirty three new players on that team, a new offensive
coordinator Josh McDaniels, who I played with and I believe in.
But at the end of the day, for them to

it's been a phenomenal year and Mike Rabel deserves all
the credit.

So you have a unique connection with Brabel because you
played in New England together for six seasons, but then
you were part of a package deal that traded you
from the Patriots to the Kansas City Chiefs.

So when I played with him for four years in
New England, Okay, and then I was franchised, and then
they made the trade to Kansas City, I said I'm

I've never heard that you were a packaged deal. So
we went to Kansas City together, which was amazing to
have a teammate, a guy that you've been around, a friend.

What time of year was that. It was in off season,
in the off.

Season, probably in February and March whenever.
Speaker 2 (25:16):
So you call each other up, you get traded, and
you're like, bruh, we're going to Kansas City? Like how
was that first phone call between the two of them.

He was a little bit more better than I was. Yeah,
because I was actually going to be able to achieve
my goals and be the guy that was fired up.

Yeah, was like, are you kidding me right now?

I'm like, I got a few years left here and
they just shipped me off. To Kansas City, who I
think at the time had won four games in two
years previous.

That's getting there. So but it was we made it work.

And he was my neighbor in Kansas City and we
lived right down the street. We traveled to games together
and do all that. So it was phenomenal to have
him there and to experience.
Speaker 2 (25:51):
That trafe to say he's the same guy from that
phone call and you got traded together to the head
coach that you see now, same guy absolutely.
Speaker 11 (25:57):
I mean I think even early on when I was
in New England, you could tell Mike Rabel was going
to be a coach. Yeah, passion for the game. He'd
go out and run scout team. I'm sure you guys
have stories. Chest he'd plays safety and just to mess
with Tom Brady, just to start talking smack and doing
all that stuff. But he was also the guy that
took great pride in his position. He was a leader

on the defensive side the ball. He'd get the guys
lined up in position. So he was somebody that you
always knew his trajectory was going this way and was
probably gonna be a leader of young men.
Speaker 9 (26:28):
Yeah, and I imagine he learned a lot from Coach Belichick,
who's been in the news a lot the last couple
of weeks, and we got to get into it. I know,
you get into it on your podcast. We got to
get into it on here in GMFB. Not a first
ballot Hall of Famer. What are your thoughts on that?
Speaker 4 (26:42):
Are you kidding me?
Speaker 11 (26:43):
Right? That's my thoughts. It's the biggest joke because the
Hall of Fame is about greatness, and no matter any
which angle you take, Bill Belichick is the greatest coach
to the coach our game. He's eight Super Bowls too
as obviously the mastermind of the New York Giants, but
six as a head coach, and the winning percentages speak
(27:03):
for itself. I mean, and I played for him personally.
There's no other organization I went to that I felt
more prepared going into a game, more ready to go
out and execute the game plan than what Bill Belichick
did for our team week in and week out.
Speaker 8 (27:16):
Now, you know, it's really impressed me about Mike Vrabel
is that when you are a coach going over there
to New England, you kind of have Bill's shadow everywhere.
And what I've really been impressed with Mike is he's
gone into it in a way that it's still kind
of an homage to what was, but it's his. You know,
what do you see in Mike as a coach that
(27:37):
may be similar to Bill And what do you see
that's a little different.
Speaker 11 (27:41):
Well. I think the interesting part about Mike Vrabel is
he's taken bits and pieces from everywhere he's been. Right,
he was with Coach Urban and Ohio State, and he
obviously learned a lot from him, and then he went
on he was positioned coach. But obviously the influence of
Coach Belichick, holding people accountable, do your job, speak for yourself.
All those fundamental principles that we had when we were
(28:03):
part of the Patriots are probably still there. But there's
this evolution too. Because Mike Grabel played the game, you
played the game at a high level. He understands the
mind of an athlete. He understands how to motivate to
get the best out of his guys, and I think
that he's really carved his own path. With obviously the
influences that he had, he's taken on and introduced to
the team as well.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
Matt, you are a part of a very fascinating and
headline worthy fraternity in football, and that is one of
the USC quarterback clubs. Zam darnold experience is a fascinating one.
Speaker 7 (28:35):
You know, this guy really really well.
Speaker 2 (28:37):
If this works out for him this weekend, what are
you going to feel about what all that he has
been through from when he was there on campus, all
the way until standing there and maybe holding the Lombardi.
Speaker 11 (28:47):
It's an incredible story because even you go back to
him at USSE he's a third round pick. He comes out,
he goes to the Jets, faces.
Speaker 7 (28:54):
A lot of advertising ridiculous.
Speaker 11 (28:56):
Then he goes to Carolina and he starts some game
at the end of that season, he goes four and
two and he showed a little something. He goes to
forty nine ers, backs up in Minnesota, finally gives him
that chance under Kevin O'Connell and to go out and
play the way that he did. But there's all you know,
the question marks going to win the big game, And
the most phenomenal part for me was his mindset, right,
You've got to be able to fight through adversity, continue

to believe in yourself, and you see him doing that
throughout the course of this year. Now He's on the
grandiest of stages at the Super Bowl with the potential
to be the first USC quarterback to actually win a
Super Bowl. Which are some pretty darn good names in there.

He'll be the first one, and next year Caleb will
be the second one. Yeah, Matt, I said, we go
way back in the intro. You are one of the
coolest people who we love who have come and hosted
the show before. So when you come and host the show,
there's always shrapnel and there's always like little trails of

Cam I begin with you the Drake May, Sam Darnold thing.
We can't escape a quarterbacks are all the Ray but

specifically New England has to be happy with how fast
their second year guy has developed ahead of being on
the biggest stage of his career.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
Jamie, the Patriots are a static with Drake May and
let me take you back to draft day. I was
in the Patriots facility and there were some questions about
whether they would take dra May or take a big
bag offer to trade back. Elliott Wolfe said they were
never close to trading that number three overall pick. He
told me that this week he's a de facto general
manager there, and he said there.

Was a few reasons.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
One, the offers weren't tantalizing as maybe people would anticipate.
They started to debate we would trade back, maybe we
get Joe All or Mileak neighbors. But every single draft
we would be trying to find Drake May, and there
aren't a lot of Drake May's two They were sold
on Drake May the man, the competitor. There were some
questions about his offense and how quickly the fit would

have with scheme coming from North Carolina, but they never
had any doubts about Drake May the dude. And that's
why Mike Vrabel said this week Drake May was one
of the biggest reasons he.

Wanted to become the Patriots. Head coach.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Stefan Dick said the match of of Drake May has
been unlike any young quarterback he has seen calling him
a mini inspiration and on Drake May's right shoulder, that's
got all the buzz. He fully participated in practice on Wednesday.
It sounds like he is going to be a full
go to throw that deep ball.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
I talked to one of his receivers, Pop Douglas. He said, he.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
Looked just like normal Drake May this week, and we
expect him to look like the Drake May in the
regular season, who was the best deep ball thrower and
led the NFL and complete some percentage. And so Drake
May was here and drafted for these moments, and they
think that big game Drake May shows up on Sunday
now to Omar Ruiz on the other quarterback in this matchup.
Speaker 5 (02:41):
Yeah, both of these quarterbacks to number three overall pick
in their respective draft. Sam Darnold's journey been well documented.
His story of resilience one of these stories of the
Super Bowl. He said that's one of the reasons why
he loves football, because.
Speaker 4 (02:55):
You can make mistakes and then learn from them.
Speaker 5 (02:58):
He said, early in his career he was so hard
on himself. But he said quote from Jerry Rice appropriately
enough here in the Bay Area, really resonated with him
that said, you're never going to have a perfect day,
and he said he's applied that to his practices, He's
applied that to his games. He said early in his
career he was hard on himself, but he learned you
can be hard on yourself without being mad at yourself.

And that story of resilience really you can apply to
his play this season. He led the NFL in turnovers
with twenty, but in the three most important games of
the season, the last three that week eighteen for the
NFC West and number one seed of course, the divisional
round game, and then the NFC Championship game, he has
not thrown an interception. I asked his offensive coordinator, Clint
(03:40):
Kubiak about that turnaround, and this is what he had
to say.
Speaker 6 (03:45):
It's really easy. Sam overall just such a good decision maker,
and he's aggressive when he has to be, and when
we call a play down the field that's not there,
he knows how to check it down and get it
to our backs. So I've seen a lot of growth there.
But you know we're going to turn Sam loose.

So Sam Darnold playing his best when they need it most.
As for that leak injury that he's been nursing. He
was limited at practice. He said he's feeling good, but
he's going to stick to his routine of rehab and treatment.
He says he wants to be feeling great ahead of practices,
and of course he wants to be feeling great, Jamie
ahead of Super Bowl Sunday.

we just had, and the tweet just shows these two
pictures if you'll see them, and it just says, I
have never seen less aura in my life. And I

was like, they're just making fun of these guys because
it's not homes and it's not Brady, and they're both
kind of young, and I wouldn't call either of them
terribly charismatic in the media, probably by design because they
try to be level headed. Neither one of these guys
is going to give us a moment after the game,
I mean neither one there. Travis Kelsey's screaming Beastie Boys
lyrics is not going to happen from these guys.

It doesn't help them, Kyle that they're looking off camera.

I feel like could be better if they like actually connected.

of guy. Listen, Sam Donald won the NFC, and God
blessed Tom Reinaldi. There is no one better that luring
and coaxing stories out of you in the moment, and
he teed them up all buttery like Tom Renaldi style,
like this jury all you've overcome, and he's going to
the micro stamps. Yeah, you know, I was just going
to looking forward to the next game. He's not taking

any baits, he's not having that moment. And all the
last two weeks everyone's like Sam, talk about the Jets,
talk about the pants, talk about all the crap you've
been thres and I'm just kind of focused on now
and I really appreciate my time with those teams. It
ain't happening. And Drake May is like not only the
boy Scouts, like the boy Scout troop leader, you know
what I'm saying, Like he is up there scouts on

there's not any of that. I would think we were
kind of onto something with Donald. Maybe the emotions catch
up with them and the tier and everything. But if
you're looking for postgame sound bites, or viral moments. It
ain't coming from those guys.

The closest thing we got to it with Donald this
week I thought was by omission. So when he gets
repeatedly asked about how he got here and people want
him to detegrate the Jets and they want him to.

He doesn't reference his stop with the Vikings a lot,
so he eats something, he compliments Kyle Shanahan and Clint Kubiak,
and there's these names in the middle.

That he does doesn't say choc.

At least I haven't heard him be like insanely positive
about Crecy and I'm like, Okay, maybe there's something there,
But now I just feel like I'm fishing and I
don't want to do.

That because that one, the Vikings one, is way worse
than the Jets one, in my opinion. Yes, I know
why the Jets moved on with them. They had a
high draft pick and it wasn't working. The Vikings one
is like, man, he was so good for so long
and they're like, we're gonna go with nine, and they
celebrated him in the locker room.

They're all in there and Kevin o'carnor just looked on

Look at him jerky if you will. Extremely Yeah, that movie,
it was great. That movie ruined John Ham for my wife,
for Brook. Yes, she's like I see that character everywhere
and he's just like d bag in a Porsche like
the worst resist and like some of the lines he says,
like I can't say on the show, but that's very

funny and Kristen Wiggs is amazing. That's one of my
favorite movies in the twenty first century. I love it.
And yeah, the answer is the Town okay, because Seth,
I'm trying not to ruin too much of it. But
there is a scene in an interrogation room where a
Fleck is just allegedly cooked and Ham comes in and
he's just like, it's like, I'm just going to show
you that I'm tougher than you and that I know
I'm smarter than you. And he just comes just like

this isn't Towny Hopscotch anymore, dug, But I want to
say one thing. You are here today so I can
personally tell you that you are going to die in
federal prison, and so are all your friends. It's like,
whoa damn and Affleck's just sitting there taking it and
then he does fire back. But like the star of
(15:24):
that scene is Ham's jawline is just chewing up scenery
and he is so charismatic and so cold and telling
someone that they're going to die in federal prison is like, Okay,
these things just got escalated, and I just I love
that movie set. I'm not going to do the incredulous
thing like you're not seeing the town. It is really
good and you will get Okay.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
The other great one, the scene ceiling is in the
bar with Blake Lively brings out the dollar bill and
she's like, hey, mister one dollar Like her accent is commitment,
and he is incredible. He brings out that dollar bill
and then he really gets under her skin because her
daughter is is really in the throes of it, her
daughter with Ben Affleck, and it's got so good. Yeah,

you watch it very different than the Bride, Like it
really shows his range.

you would use to describe your hosting job for NFL Honors.
Speaker 10 (17:08):
The hosting job is an honor. I mean, that's simply
what it is.
Speaker 4 (17:11):
It's great.
Speaker 10 (17:12):
I mean, it's a wonderful night. We celebrate the NFL
that we all love. Best players are here, it's fantastic.
My hosting ability adequate, which is you know that's I
aim for adequate. That way, if I vault over that bar,
I get to passable, I get to good. Every now
and again, I'll scrape the bottom of exceptional.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
Looking back at the twenty twenty five regular season, there
was kind of a parallel to a lot of Hollywood
drama that happened, and now it's transferring. I think it
was one battle after another nice excellent. When it comes
to honors, do you have an award a category that
you think people are going to gasp audibly at when
you are a part of announcing.
Speaker 10 (17:57):
That is a good question. I mean, here's the thing
about this season, it was so it was so haphazard.
I mean, the I don't I think if anybody had
bet that the Seahawks and the and the and the
Patriots at the beginning of the season, they probably would be
in for a big payout. It felt in many ways
like a changing in the guard. But there were some
pretty big milestones. I mean, when you look at the
(18:19):
sack record falling this year, and that was pretty great.
When you look at the quarterbacks that came out. Obviously
Darnald and Mayor are the ones in the in the
big game, but even the old standbys, you know, it's
it's it was a very transitional year. And that's what
I appreciated about it. And that's what happens in the
NFL every so often. It's nice to have a Super
Bowl that doesn't have the Eagles and the Chiefs in it,
(18:39):
even though I'm a Chiefs fan, right, but it's nice
to see some.
Speaker 4 (18:42):
New blood in it.
Speaker 10 (18:43):
Even if that blood is the reconstituted blood of the Patriots.
Speaker 7 (18:48):
But it's new characters, so it's allowed.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
I guess what's what takes more preparation for hosting Saturday
Night Live or NFL.
Speaker 10 (18:55):
Honors Saturday Night Live pretty pretty much just because there's
a lot more moving parts this has been written, and
how it has its own internal velocity that kind of
carries it through.
Speaker 4 (19:08):
Through the evening.
Speaker 10 (19:09):
And it's also the week in Super Bowl, so everybody's here,
everybody's excited. It's kind of got a built in enthusiasm
and energy to it, and like I said, it's it's
really nice to I think certainly for the NFO community,
but also for the fans and the people that support
the players. It's really nice to see them, you know,
get there, get a little shine, and.
Speaker 7 (19:28):
To feel ultimately prepared for it.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
You have just watched football season long, so I'm sure
your golden on that.
Speaker 10 (19:33):
I did watch a lot of football this year. I
was working on a project in Winnipeg where the average
temperature was minus forever and it was Sunday's were a
very nice respite from that.
Speaker 7 (19:47):
Here's a question for you.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
Super Bowl commercials, for some people are as much a
part of the game as the actual competition themselves. As
a man who's had a brusture two in the advertising world,
do you have a theme of a Super Bowl commercial
that you mark is one of your some of your favorites.
Speaker 10 (20:02):
That's a good question, you know. I was always a
big fan of the like event ones. Remember there used
to be this thing called the bud Bowl where Budweiser
played bud Light and like the bottles would go. I
thought those were awesome, and I think that, uh, I
think those are always fun. It's it's a it's a
it's a one of a kind event. So whenever they
do the one of the kind ads, I really like those,
and then the other ones I really like are And
(20:24):
not to be a homer because anazer Bush is from
Saint Louis, but when they would do the like super
sentimental ones with the Clydesdale's and like the Baby Clydesdale.
Speaker 2 (20:33):
Have you seen this year's Oh my gosh, how do
you feel about the commercials being leaked in advanced leaked?
Speaker 4 (20:38):
That's garbage. Don't do that right.
Speaker 10 (20:40):
They were always supposed to be You see them on
Sunday and then you talk about them in USA today
the next day. And that's how it was. That's how
it was when I was growing up. I don't like
this leak them online stuff.
Speaker 2 (20:51):
Well, when you see this year's for Anheuser Busch, forget
about it your eyes because there's a there's a new
animal introduced. Oh boy, and it's spectacular. Okay, it will
make you feel things which all commercials need to right.
Last question for you, who in the entire Chiefs organization
would you want to play in a movie?
Speaker 4 (21:10):
Taylor Swift that she does it.
Speaker 2 (21:12):
Technically she's not on the payroll, so and I'm not sure, just.
Speaker 10 (21:16):
Want access to her jet who.
Speaker 7 (21:22):
Whether it's whether it be from mister Hunt.
Speaker 10 (21:25):
Well, I've seen you know, Look, I've seen the trailer
for the John Madden movie with Nicholas Cages John Madden.
So I'll see his John Madden and I'll play Andy Reid.
How does that go?
Speaker 7 (21:36):
Excellent?
Speaker 2 (21:39):
Can you imagine him with the mustache and the play
sheet and the hat and the headset, or.
Speaker 4 (21:44):
The burgers and cheeseburgers. John, that's never gonna happen. You're
never gonna You're not Andy Reid. I'm sorry. You're a
lot of roles you can play, You're not gonna play
any Reid. I just looked up the Bud Bowl too.
Speaker 8 (21:55):
It looked like the Raiders versus the Chiefs that they
got the helmets on, the bottles, they got the broadcasters
with the mics.
Speaker 4 (22:03):
They even got snow going on. Yeah, he mentioned in
the Bud Ball bud boll is a huge thing. You
go to commercial and it just this cartoon animation of
Budweiser versus but like bottles with helmets on having a
football game. Remember how we reacted to like the toy
story things and the monsters zing things. Like we were
watching these bud bull commercials be like, how do they
do this? It can't get better than this that you
(22:24):
remember Bud Like, I'm like, how did they possibly do that? Computers?
I guess crazy.
Speaker 8 (22:29):
It reminded me of that, Like, I know, I remember
those like back in the day they had the plato ones,
right they shot the plato Yeah.
Speaker 4 (22:38):
It's like watching this reminded me of It's so cool
and I love that he shot And by the way,
you talking about advertising with Don Draper, he's.
Speaker 2 (22:45):
A great cool The fact that he had a take
about he's mad that these commercials are already released, and
then he wants to see Sunday the Anheuser Busch one
this year is Has anybody seen it?
Speaker 4 (22:54):
No? I don't want to watch them, jamis No, It's.

It's great, It's great.

You know what else will be NFL Honors percent of
Biden visil Line. It airs tonight and I Eastern on
NBC and nfhol Network and available on Peacock and NFL

I just came in from Tennessee. We had a little
bit of a ice storm last week.

It was interesting because I'm always kind of skeptical of
the weather pattern there. But at the end of the day,
it's real. Yeah, block ice, trees down.
Speaker 4 (23:42):
No power for a little while. Yeah, but I'm here,
guys in California, winter is coming and the the white
Walkers that are the New England Patriots are back, and
what's it like? You know, we had ground here yesterday
and it was like, isn't it weird, Rob that they're
back and it's not you and Tom and it's just
a whole other crew. You were part of the Patriots
for a while. What's it like for you to see
the Patriots back with all new faces? Pretty much, it's unbelievable.
Speaker 11 (24:01):
I mean, to see what Mike Ribels accomplished in the
first season me in there. I mean, he's my boy
and you're always rooting for him. But let's be honest,
the expectation this year was maybe five hundred something like
that would be a nine, and eight would have.
Speaker 4 (24:12):
Been awesome for you, even for me. I mean, you got.
Speaker 11 (24:16):
Thirty three new players on that team, a new offensive
coordinator Josh McDaniels, who I played with and I believe in.
But at the end of the day, for them to
come out and win what is it seventeen and three
right now, and to go on this run in the playoffs,
it's been a phenomenal year and Mike Rabel deserves all
the credit.
Speaker 2 (24:31):
So you have a unique connection with Brabel because you
played in New England together for six seasons, but then
you were part of a package deal that traded you
from the Patriots to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Speaker 7 (24:43):
Is that right?
Speaker 4 (24:43):
That's right? Yes.
Speaker 11 (24:44):
So when I played with him for four years in
New England, Okay, and then I was franchised, and then
they made the trade to Kansas City, I said I'm
not going unless you bring Rabele with me.
Speaker 4 (24:53):
I didn't say that at all. Wow, can you imagine, Brave.
Speaker 11 (25:00):
I've never heard that you were a packaged deal. So
we went to Kansas City together, which was amazing to
have a teammate, a guy that you've been around, a friend.
Speaker 7 (25:10):
What time of year was that. It was in off season,
in the off.
Speaker 11 (25:13):
Season, probably in February and March whenever.
Speaker 2 (25:16):
So you call each other up, you get traded, and
you're like, bruh, we're going to Kansas City? Like how
was that first phone call between the two of them.
Speaker 11 (25:22):
He was a little bit more better than I was. Yeah,
because I was actually going to be able to achieve
my goals and be the guy that was fired up.
Speaker 4 (25:29):
Yeah, was like, are you kidding me right now?
Speaker 11 (25:33):
I'm like, I got a few years left here and
they just shipped me off. To Kansas City, who I
think at the time had won four games in two
years previous.
Speaker 4 (25:40):
That's getting there. So but it was we made it work.
Speaker 11 (25:43):
And he was my neighbor in Kansas City and we
lived right down the street. We traveled to games together
and do all that. So it was phenomenal to have
him there and to experience.
Speaker 2 (25:51):
That trafe to say he's the same guy from that
phone call and you got traded together to the head
coach that you see now, same guy absolutely.
Speaker 11 (25:57):
I mean I think even early on when I was
in New England, you could tell Mike Rabel was going
to be a coach. Yeah, passion for the game. He'd
go out and run scout team. I'm sure you guys
have stories. Chest he'd plays safety and just to mess
with Tom Brady, just to start talking smack and doing
all that stuff. But he was also the guy that
took great pride in his position. He was a leader
(26:18):
on the defensive side the ball. He'd get the guys
lined up in position. So he was somebody that you
always knew his trajectory was going this way and was
probably gonna be a leader of young men.
Speaker 9 (26:28):
Yeah, and I imagine he learned a lot from Coach Belichick,
who's been in the news a lot the last couple
of weeks, and we got to get into it. I know,
you get into it on your podcast. We got to
get into it on here in GMFB. Not a first
ballot Hall of Famer. What are your thoughts on that?
Speaker 4 (26:42):
Are you kidding me?
Speaker 11 (26:43):
Right? That's my thoughts. It's the biggest joke because the
Hall of Fame is about greatness, and no matter any
which angle you take, Bill Belichick is the greatest coach
to the coach our game. He's eight Super Bowls too
as obviously the mastermind of the New York Giants, but
six as a head coach, and the winning percentages speak
(27:03):
for itself. I mean, and I played for him personally.
There's no other organization I went to that I felt
more prepared going into a game, more ready to go
out and execute the game plan than what Bill Belichick
did for our team week in and week out.
Speaker 8 (27:16):
Now, you know, it's really impressed me about Mike Vrabel
is that when you are a coach going over there
to New England, you kind of have Bill's shadow everywhere.
And what I've really been impressed with Mike is he's
gone into it in a way that it's still kind
of an homage to what was, but it's his. You know,
what do you see in Mike as a coach that
(27:37):
may be similar to Bill And what do you see
that's a little different.
Speaker 11 (27:41):
Well. I think the interesting part about Mike Vrabel is
he's taken bits and pieces from everywhere he's been. Right,
he was with Coach Urban and Ohio State, and he
obviously learned a lot from him, and then he went
on he was positioned coach. But obviously the influence of
Coach Belichick, holding people accountable, do your job, speak for yourself.
All those fundamental principles that we had when we were
(28:03):
part of the Patriots are probably still there. But there's
this evolution too. Because Mike Grabel played the game, you
played the game at a high level. He understands the
mind of an athlete. He understands how to motivate to
get the best out of his guys, and I think
that he's really carved his own path. With obviously the
influences that he had, he's taken on and introduced to
the team as well.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
Matt, you are a part of a very fascinating and
headline worthy fraternity in football, and that is one of
the USC quarterback clubs. Zam darnold experience is a fascinating one.
Speaker 7 (28:35):
You know, this guy really really well.
Speaker 2 (28:37):
If this works out for him this weekend, what are
you going to feel about what all that he has
been through from when he was there on campus, all
the way until standing there and maybe holding the Lombardi.
Speaker 11 (28:47):
It's an incredible story because even you go back to
him at USSE he's a third round pick. He comes out,
he goes to the Jets, faces.
Speaker 7 (28:54):
A lot of advertising ridiculous.
Speaker 11 (28:56):
Then he goes to Carolina and he starts some game
at the end of that season, he goes four and
two and he showed a little something. He goes to
forty nine ers, backs up in Minnesota, finally gives him
that chance under Kevin O'Connell and to go out and
play the way that he did. But there's all you know,
the question marks going to win the big game, And
the most phenomenal part for me was his mindset, right,
You've got to be able to fight through adversity, continue
(29:16):
to believe in yourself, and you see him doing that
throughout the course of this year. Now He's on the
grandiest of stages at the Super Bowl with the potential
to be the first USC quarterback to actually win a
Super Bowl. Which are some pretty darn good names in there.
Speaker 4 (29:30):
He'll be the first one, and next year Caleb will
be the second one. Yeah, Matt, I said, we go
way back in the intro. You are one of the
coolest people who we love who have come and hosted
the show before. So when you come and host the show,
there's always shrapnel and there's always like little trails of
breadcrumbs to fun things. When you hosted the show, there
(29:50):
was a tweet that came up from a listener or
a viewer. Excuse me, they tweeted this. I think we
have the tweet. It's like a screen cap of you.
So this person says, Matt Castle looks like a sitcom
dad now and you've got the cool plaid shirt and
they are back in our New York studio. But then
Castle retweets this. Look at Castle's tweet. Go ahead. Castle
is just full snarky, and he says, I'll take this
over the compstant Woody from toysto. That's true, that's true.
Speaker 11 (30:13):
What do he is like?
Speaker 4 (30:15):
He's a cowboy. He's a hero.
Speaker 11 (30:17):
You know, I still have scars, I think from being
every time they would do a rookie show and they
do the lookalike you know, yeah, yeah, I mean they
used to call me Woody like Woody from Toy Story
all the time, So I get that camp from from
Toy Story all the time.
