(00:17):
Good morning and welcome in. It'stime for the Home Improvement Show of the
Midlands on one of three point fiveFM and five sixty AM w v OC.
As always, it's a pleasure tohave you with us. And this
morning we've got Labor Day weekend underway. We've got Gamecock football kicking off tonight
in Charlotte. Our best game Cockcoverage starts at four thirty this afternoon with
Christopher Thompson and his team. Hadto go to that seven thirty kickoff against

(00:42):
the tar Heels of North Carolina, and of course your phone calls right after
that final whistle blows on the fifthquarter postgame call, I'm showing we hope
it will be a lot of happyfolks on the line to night. All
right, Coming up by in thehour, we'll talk to a Courtney Aven
from Diamond Concrete Solutions. If youare a football fanatic and maybe you got
tailgating set up. A lot offolks do this in the garage. You

(01:03):
make it to a man cave.Boy, have they got something to talk
about when it comes to personalizing thatspace for you. You gotta love this.
We'll talk with Summer from Beaver Rufigingutters. She'll join us later on
as well, but we get thingsstarted on this Gamecock Football Saturday. And
for your Tiger fans, are yougot in a couple of days to wait?
That's all good. Trey Pala joinsus from Mosquito. Trey, good

(01:25):
morning, sir, Good morning. How are you. I'm well man,
pumped up buddy, ready to go, ready to get some beautiful weather.
Oh don't we though for this weekend? You know, let me start right
there with your Trey, because youknow, after we had a Dalia moved
through earlier this week. Yes,it is absolutely gorgeous all the way through
Labor Day weekend this weekend. Butwe'll get back to some mid nineties by

(01:48):
sometime next week. I think itwas telling us. But first up,
while Adalia certainly did some reek, some havoc in certain parts of the state,
nothing like, of course, whatFlorida and southern Georgia saw. But
here in the in the Columbia area, we were pretty much unscathed. But
some rain. But when a systemlike that moves through and when you have

(02:08):
some local lives flooding at all, what does that do to the Mosquito population?
Tray, Well, it obviously leaveseverything stopping wet and it usually takes
several days to dry. And that'sso that's you know, followed by lots
of heat and humidity, and it'sjust it's really an ideal you know,
time and place for mosquitoes to multiply. So any any eggs that were not

(02:35):
wet or wet now and they're hatchingbecause the temperatures are you know, eighties
and nineties degrees and so forth, and so it's you know that it's really
an ideal time. I mean, the fall time is is it does usually
get a little bit cooler, youknow, we get down to seventies and
eighties and stuff. It's it's it'snice. It's beautiful even down in the

(02:55):
sixties. Yeah, but when youhave these big systems come through and we're
supposed to have a pretty active, you know, hurricane season, yeah,
you know, it's just it keepsthings very wet. I think I recall
you telling us at one time, you all all the way back to the
big flood here we had back intwenty fifteen, that that that really changed

(03:16):
some things for some vol well pobvious reasons. But when it came to
the mosquito population. I mean thatjust kind of moved some of these big
populations around Cannon. Yeah, that'sa very interesting thing that happens when you
have flooding type rains, which wedidn't really from this storm. We didn't
have enough rain really uh to createflooding and real big movement of water.

(03:40):
But you know that that flood andfifteen was you know, was that and
then some but a lot of times, yeah, when you have big systems
or hurricanes come through and lots andlots of rain really quick, it will
pick the eggs up and move themdownstream. So we may have people who
maybe didn't have a problem before, now they've got it because of these the
moving of these eggs downstream. Iguess, yeah, that's that's exactly right.

(04:03):
The you know, flooding waters willpick up mosquito eggs and move them,
and then it will create a situationwhere you had people who had tons
of mosquitoes they don't have mosquitoes youknow for a while, and people who
didn't have mosquitoes have tons of mosquitoes, thank you so. But we again,
we didn't see that kind of asituation here with a dullia. But

(04:26):
yeah, we're in a September now, and this is, yeah, the
peak of hurricane season. That's notnot with the Dulia didn't we didn't get
enough rain. But if you getfive to eight inches of rain really quick,
you know, or ten inches ofrain really quick, that you know,
anytime you have floods that are gettingwhere the streams all fill up and
they're flowing real hard, that that'sthe type of situation where you have kind

(04:48):
of an egg migration, if youwill. Yeah, all right, So,
okay, we're in a Labor Dayweekend here, and for folks who've
been here, you know that thatfrom a weather perspective, although it's so
nice this weekend, well we knowthat from weather perspective, that doesn't mean
anything when it comes to summertime beingover. So we had a long way

(05:09):
to go before this mosquito season isdone with. Yeah. Generally speaking,
our mosquito season goes till about Thanksgiving, and so we we actually treat right
up to Thanksgiving. Usually in thefirst few weeks of December is when it
really starts getting down into the thirtiesevery single night. And when it gets
into the thirties every single night, that that will eliminate adult mosquitos. When

(05:31):
you start getting the temperatures under fiftydegrees consistently, that will stop the eggs
from hatching, So the population willgo down. But you'll still see live,
active mosquitos, and you'll still getbit because they're biting and laying eggs
before they die, but they leavethose eggs behind. Those eggs won't hatch

(05:51):
usually until the next spring, youknow, because the temperatures are not right.
But sure, yeah, it takes. It takes into November and December
before the mosquitoes really stop. Andyou know, if we have an Indian
Summer watch out, have had mosquitosin December and January before, does it
change their behavior at all? Imean, okay, it's not. It

(06:14):
won't get cold enough for a whileto actually kill them off. But you
does a mosquito thrive more and ninetydegree weather as opposed to eighty or seventy
degree weather? Does it? Doesit? Not even matter? That really
doesn't affect them. It's it's allabout what percentage of the eggs hatch and
how quickly they go through the larvalpupus stage and are born as adults.

(06:42):
When it's really hot and very humidand everything's sopping wet. I mean they
will, they will go from letegg to adult mosquito in a week.
When the conditions are not right, that that process takes a lot longer,
you know, in the early spring, ring in the late fall, it
might take a month from a hatchedmosquito egg to actually, you know,

(07:05):
turn into an adult mosquito. Soit's just the more ideal the conditions,
the faster that they multiply. Andthat's just just based on the number of
eggs that are hatching and how manyof those make it to adults and as
adults orry, they don't live verylong, correct, yeah, adults.
It depends on the species. Butyou know, the type of mosquitos we

(07:27):
have, You've got you know, males maybe ten days, females maybe four
or five weeks. Wow, okay, I'm glad we humans won't have the
kind of spread and lifespan between malesand females. Yeah, exactly right.
So we do have a little bitof spread. Yeah, well, yes
we do, yeah, but notnot quite that much. But so again

(07:50):
it's it's yeah, yeah, yeah, if you could, if you could
eliminate all those eggs out there, then even if you weren't able to even
if you didn't kill off mosquito.Does it exist in your backyard right now?
But if you eliminated all those eggs, so pretty much within about you
know, a month or so,you'd be mosquito free. Is that is
that accurate? That is correct? The problem is is there's nothing legal or

(08:13):
safe that will actually kill a mosquitoegg. Oh, all you can do
is wait for that egg to hatch, and if you put a larva side
in that water, when that egghatches, the mosquito larva, which is
a little wiggler that's in the water, will be affected and it will either

(08:35):
never be born or it will beborn sterile. And if if it's born
sterile, it can't breed. Ifit can't breed, it can't bite.
So you basically have accomplished the samething. You're ending that breeding cycle,
and you you're ending them breeding andbiting, and so I mean that's really
half the battle is finding where they'rewhere they're laying their eggs and getting larva

(08:58):
side and all that water or gettingrid of water so the eggs dry out
and uh and do not hatch. So it's just that there's no chemical that's
safe enough to use to kill thesemosquito eggs or what's what's I mean,
what's the deal with that? Yeah, it's it's just I mean, that's
pretty well the the that's pretty wellwhat happens with with pretty much all insect

(09:22):
eggs of any sort. There reallyisn't a chemical or anything that penetrates the
egg and it affects what's inside. You can you can only affect it once
it has broken the egg. Imean, you think about just an egg
in general. They're there, theirair tight, and they're they're pretty resilient,
and when they're teeny tiny and there'shundreds and hundreds of them, it's

(09:46):
just there. You know, I'msure that they could have something that would
dissolve them or something, but youknow that probably wouldn't be safe to just
put in standing water around your yard. I mean, if I were to
look at container of just you know, nasty waters, what's it there for
a while round here? Chances arepretty good it's probably full of these eggs,

(10:09):
right most likely? Yeah, ifyou've got a wheelbarrow or a bucket
or something like that, it's,uh, it's a very high likelihood it's
going to have mosquito larvae in itor eggs in it? Are they can
you see them with the naked eyeor are they small enough, so small
to where you would very that's veryThe eggs themselves are very difficult to see

(10:30):
with the naked eye. You reallygot to know what you're looking for.
And you know they're gonna lay themin in dirty water, and uh,
you know, some of them floatand some of them don't. And if
they're in dirty water, they're justgonna they're just gonna blend in with whatever
else is in that you know, dirty bucket. So let's talk about the
mosquito joe process here, Trey, your first and your first visit. I'm

(11:00):
just guessing here, and I'm tryingto remember because y'all been coming our house
for so long. I don't recallyour friend visit. It's been years ago.
I know that. But that firstvisit, that's you gotta really take
some time, I guess to toto investigate a lot of things. And
after that maybe becomes a bit easierbecause you know where to look. I
guess, yeah, I mean Ithink that you know, for a really

(11:20):
good trained mosquito technician, you know, they know where to look, they
can watch the you know, theycan see the you know, kind of
the elevation of the ground and wherewater would run to and what things are
generally wet in yards. It's usuallyall the same type of things. I
mean, you're you're always checking thegutters. You're checking, you know,

(11:41):
looking for drains and where drains areand where they drain too, you know
that are in the yard, whetherthey're French drains or you know, just
drains under the ground, downspouts, the black you know, little core game
did tight at the bottom of adownspout is a really bad one. There's

(12:03):
always hold water, you know. And then all kinds of toys and stuff
like that, and then tools likebuckets and wheelbarrows and you know, everything
we have holds water. If it'smade of plastic, you can't turn it
upside down, it'll still hold waterin the rim on the outside, so
trash cans, you know, thingslike that. So you get pretty well

(12:24):
trained to identify things, and thenyou know, you just got to take
the time to look under stuff,Like underneath the deck in the backyard is
usually a big area that you know, things are under there that are holding
water. I guess that's especially theproblem if you got a deck that's almost
sitting on the ground but not quite. It's just how do you deal with
that because you can't get under it. Yeah, the only thing that we

(12:48):
can do we have these little granulesthat are water beside that we basically drop
on top of the deck and thenwe use a blower to blow them down
between the cracks and they just dropthe same same place that water would drop.
And you hope you get it inthere. I mean, that's I'll
be honest. That is probably oneof those problems is very difficult to resolve.
You have a you know, whenpeople build decks, they don't always

(13:13):
make things real level underneath. Theyleave a lot of holes. If you
ever have a dog that gets underthere, they dig holes and stuff,
and it's really out of sight, out of mind. Especially when somebody's building
the deck. They're not thinking about, you know, mosquito control. They're
they're thinking about what is it goingto look like? And when they get
all the boards on top, youcan't see anything underneath, and you never

(13:33):
will. But you know, I'venever seen one underneath that's completely smooth and
drains properly, and so personally Iwould put in a concrete patio before I'd
ever put in a one foot highdeck that you can't get under and you
can't treat, because I can guaranteeyou're gonna have a mosquito problem. Every
time you sit on that deck, you're gonna get eaten alive and they're just

(13:54):
gonna come right up from under thedeck. And that's going to be outside,
especially this time of the year. That's probably the place you're gonna want
to be setting on that deck, right, without a doubt, that could
be a problem. Yeah, Okay, I've been so many problems like that.
I just I would never build onenow unless it's you know, two

(14:15):
or three feet off the ground thatyou could really easily get under. And
you know, make sure that wheneveryou're building a deck that those things are
are not just level, but you'vegot gravel under there, and it's and
this everything's flowing away from the house. I mean, ay, you don't
want water sitting up against the house. No, you know, I've seen
yards where water drains right straight towardsthe house and under that deck and it's

(14:41):
it's probably a swimming pool under there. That will create a problem. Speaking,
I since you mentioned at swimming pools. Not quite yet, but it
won't be long before, you know, some folks will be thinking about,
you know, shutting down the poolfor the for the for wintertime here.
But the problem is is that themosquitos are going to hang around a lot
longer afterwards. So tips for shuttingdown a pool and not having a mosquito

(15:05):
problem as a result of it,I mean, what do you suggest?
The best suggestion is waiting until latefall to shut that pool down. If
you start shutting your pool down now, within a month, that thing is
going to be green, and youknow, mid October you still have very

(15:26):
active mosquito population, and that thing'sgonna end up being a cess pool full
of mosquito larva and you're gonna havea bad mosquito problem now, and you're
really going to have a bad onein the spring. So I would I
would wait and keep that thing cleanand you know, you might not be
swimming in it because it's too cold, but it's nice to look at.
I would keep it clean until cleanas you can until you know, probably

(15:50):
November, and then shut it down. That's gonna be the best way to
avoid that problem. Well, whatabout you know, tarping and putting a
tarp over the pool that is well, I you know, most of those,
most of the tarps end up hangingdown in the water, and then
you have a little pool of waterover it will never air tight. So
I can guarantee you that, youknow, if they can get into a

(16:14):
bottle cap, they can get underneaththat tarp right well. And then I
guess at the top of that tarpthat is holding water too, that could
be the they could be breathing rightthere, I guess, right on top
of that soccer yep. Wow,Okay, all right, well, all
kinds of things think about when itcomes to control of mosquitoes. I guess
where. And we haven't heard anynews recently because I guess the last couple

(16:36):
times we've got together we've at leasttalked about the issues that some places have
had with malaria and even dn gayfever floor seems to be the place that
had of the most oh, bythe way, leprosy too. But that's
totally not a mosquito thing, right, that's a that's an armadillo, an
armadillo thing. Did you know that? Yeah, yeah, I have heard

(16:56):
that, And we've got plenty ofthose around here all of a sudden,
Right, yeah, apparently we don'tdeal with those, Thank goodness, right,
says not Armadilla Control talking about mosquitoes. But this this the malaria of
diggay fever. The we haven't hadthose cases pop up around here that I'm
aware of, are you no?Thank goodness? Uh, it would probably

(17:18):
be a West Nile virus here inthe Midlands, but you know, it
could be any of those things. But you know, that would be the
most common thing for us to haveif we were to have some sort of
an outbreak or something like that. And you know, it's it's been a
very unusual but very active, youknow mosquito season that I think where we
had a low population in the springand then we had a very large population

(17:42):
this summer. And with a predictedbad, you know, hurricane season coming,
we're probably going to have a prettybig mess all the way through the
fall. And so continue treating, continue keeping those you know, everything in
your yard empty of water, andfight to get fight because it's not over.

(18:03):
Don't let your guard down, allright. So now if you're listening
and you're thinking, you know,I don't want to deal with this anymore,
because let's say, unless you've gotmosquito control coming out, you're you're
going to be dealing with it atsome point. You can spray all you
want to yourself. But you're listeningto this, you say, Okay,
maybe it's late the season and you'rethinking, why I bothered that? Yeah,
bother, Now your first treatment yougot a special running, right,

(18:26):
Trey. Yeah, we still dothe first treatment for only thirty nine dollars.
That's up to a half an acre. If your property is bigger than
that, will it'll be just alittle bit more than that, but that's
below cost. We want to earnyour business the right way. You there's

(20:44):
welcome back the Home Improvement Show ofthe Midlands. Here on one of three
point five FM and five sixty am w v o C. I've told
the story before, years back, well not that many years ago, but
five six years ago we put herhome up for sale and one of the
things we had done maybe about ayear before wash yep, my wife said,
you know, I found this stuffthat we can put in our garage

(21:06):
floor and it's it's really cool. It's just paint. It's got like these
speckles and stuff, and okay,so we're hallering out of the garage and
we painted it and it looked greatfor a little while until you you know,
put a couple of cars in thereand everything else, and well,
needless to say, that didn't lastout long. Courtney Avid Now from Diamond

(21:30):
Concrete Solutions is here with a bettersolution. Courtney, Good morning, good
morning, how are you I'm wonderfulit is. Uh, well, it's
game day here, isn't it.Yeah, Well, now for for for
fans of my team, not forI know you're a Tiger fan. Don't
hold it against me. You gottawait a couple more days to get things.
But for us, our best gameCOT coverage starts at four thirty this
after them. Christopher Thompson the teamgetting ready for USC and U n C.

(21:56):
So let's talk about garages. Andfor some folks, that's that's a
tailgate spot. Yeah, it's actuallyfor us, it's a tailgate spot.
So, yeah, we have anynumber of solutions to kind of spruce up
that area where it might be halfindoor half outdoor. Maybe you want to
have some neighbors over and over. And we personally have a TV and some
exercise equipment in our garage, butwe've also got some great seating area there

(22:18):
and an outdoor fridge cooler, andwe've got our favorite team not only on
the wall, but on the floors. Oh, you've got it. Do
you have an actual Tiger on thefloor? You got you got the color,
You've got the colors. We've gotpurple, orange and white flake flooring
on our garage floor, and itis amazing and it looks so good,
like everybody ooze and ozz over it. But it's easy to keep clean,

(22:40):
it looks great, and it reallymakes that space a lot more fun to
hang out in. Now you'd behappy to do a garnet, white and
black floor. We absolutely have, and we've got samples of that in our
showroom and we're not gonna you know, listen, we're so happy for usc.
Shane Biemer is just so awesome. We think the world of him.
He's going to be so great forthis team. And so yeah, we
do have great samples of that. We're one hundred percent able and ready to

(23:03):
do whatever mixture of garnet and whiteor black that you want to do in
there. So does work. Soreally any color flake flakes can be any
color. You know, you cando any epoxy colors. But the flake
flooring is really great for garages. It's very durable. We've got some really
great waterproof and extremely durable flakes thatyou know, can withstand pulling a car

(23:26):
in there. They can withstand, yes, exactly, So we can do
really any color scheme you want to. But if you want to make it
an entertainment space. We can youknow, customize that for you too.
Some people do the panthers colors orwhat have you. So yeah, so
ultimately what we do is you know, prep work. That's how you keep
it long lasting. The prep workis really important. That's what we pride

(23:48):
ourselves on. Certainly, you cando this DIY project, but it's not
going to last as long as ifyou have that thousand pound grinder that you
pull into the garage wants it's beenemptied out and grind that concrete back open
to open the pores up more sothat when you put the first layer down
of the base coat material, that'sgoing to really adhere to the floor properly.

(24:12):
And then the flake broadcast over that, which was sort of those specs
and flake looking things, they aregoing to stick to that base coat.
And then you'll do any number of, I guess repeats of that to make
sure that it goes down consistently andcovers everything and has a nice color texture

(24:33):
to it. And then we sortof scrape that down so that it's not
gonna, you know, hurt yourfeet. And then once that's nice and
smooth, however smooth you want,if you want some non slipe. We
can put some non slip or leaveit a little bit you know, more
grip in there for you if you'dlike. And then the top coat goes
on top of that and seals allof it. And that's how it really
lasts for a long time. There'squite the process it is, but you

(24:56):
know it. Typically we never promisea one day garage because floor prep is
really important. Typically we can dothat for a two car garage in a
day and a half. Three cargarage is typically about two days, right,
and then of course you want tomake sure you don't have torrential rain
because you want to be able tolet it dry properly. Yeah, and

(25:18):
we lose sight of that. Howhow the weather impacts something like, Yeah,
there are factors that are beyond control. Absolutely, So you know,
if you if you do have somerain in there, we sort of stop
what we're doing and we shut thedoor and keep it air tight for you,
and then we come back when thatrain rain is over and we finish
up. Okay, so probably andthings can happen, of course, but

(25:38):
you know, assuming the weather cooperates, even a three car garage, probably
a two day job. Yeah, yeah, absolutely If it takes longer than
that, you know, you're you'relosing time on other people. So yeah,
and our guys, you know, this is something that they've learned.
Well, they do it all dayevery day. They're experts at it.
They can get it done in twodays. We we do recom in that.

(26:00):
You don't drive a car back ontoit for another probably forty eight hours
after that, but you can walkon it. Within twenty four hours.
You can start to move light youknow, light stuff back in, rolling
heavy you know, freezers and thingslike that, and rolling your cars back
in there, driving your cars backin. Typically the best thing is at
least forty eight hours to let thatcure and then you can put heavy,

(26:21):
you know stuff back on it.We talk about the weather, it is
the heat. The heat come intoplay at all the is that a factor?
And yeah, you know it is. In fact for a lot of
overlays and coatings and epoxy all sortsof things. Typically they do not perform
over ninety degrees. So if theproduct is not stored at an ambient temperature,

(26:41):
which you know of course we dothat, then it can you know,
perform badly once it gets applied. So we try to keep our materials
in a good environment. But onceyou get them out of that environment and
take them to the job, ifit's over ninety degrees, or if if
the ground temperature is over ninety degrees, if that crete surface is more than

(27:02):
ninety degrees, typically those products justwon't perform well. They won't set up
right, they won't cure well,or they won't mix well, or they'll
mix and then they'll harden too quickly. And so you see some failures and
some repeat jobs with trying to dothat and too high of a heat.
So we've definitely paused some of theoutdoor work and garage work during this heat

(27:25):
wave we've been having, right andwe're really excited about some eighty degree weather
coming so and we've had a coupleof those days here recently after that storm
moved on through here. Now.So this is this is part science and
part art. What you do.Absolutely absolutely there's dew point as a factor.
You know, if you get reallytechnical, there's an exact minimum dew

(27:48):
point that you have to have. The temperature and the dew point you know,
to be the right number of degreesapart to be able to have you
know, applications start as well.Prep prep, you know, grinding and
prep work and taping things up andkeeping working spaces clean. That can happen
in any in any degrees. Butwe definitely are lucky. We've had a
lot of indoor work and commercial workthis summer during that heat wave, and

(28:08):
we've just had to, unfortunately askour customers to be patient with us for
outdoor jobs and some garage work untilthis this heat comes down a little bit.
But we're there. We're getting tothe eighty degrees. It's really nice.
Everybody's breathing a sigh of relief.Yeah. Right, So I'm just
spitballing here, but I'm guessing notwo garages or no two concrete floors or

(28:33):
necessarily the same if you've got,say a newer structure. Sure, does
that necessarily mean that your job iseasier from what you have to do.
Yeah? Absolutely, you know, newer concrete it has to cure if you've
poured. You know, if you'vegot new slab, brand new construction and
you just poured yesterday, we can'tcome in and do anything to it for

(28:55):
twenty eight to thirty days. Itneeds twenty twenty eight to thirty days to
cure, and then newer concrete definitelyis easier, requires a little bit less
prep work. Sometimes it doesn't requireeven all of that crazy grinding. We
just maybe do like a hot pressurewash or commercial pressure wash to open those
pores up really good. And thenwe also have h the need for relief

(29:18):
joints. Relief joints were not reallypart of the older concrete laying, you
know, the so where you seesort of a long linear line in between
slabs of concrete, that relief jointis what's going to help keep or i
guess, reduce cracks in the concretesomewhere to move exactly. Concrete is going

(29:44):
to expand it's gonna move there's,you know, whatever's underneath it, if
there's ground movement underneath it. Ever, you know, we have a lot
of red clay here and in thispart of the state, and so that
causes some movement and maybe some moisture. And so if we have that relief
joint, it's going to help directthe crack if there's going to be cracking,
to that joint, so that it'snot in the middle of the lab.

(30:07):
So really old concrete they didn't knowto put joints in more frequently,
and now they're sort of a systematic. You know, if you if you
see a ten by ten foot squarethat doesn't have you know, some relief
joints separating that ten by ten fromanother ten by ten, you're going to
see more cracking over time. Andthis new construction, newly poured concrete,
typically has a lot better relief jointThey figure that out there. Yeah,

(30:30):
so that helps make our lives easierfor the application process. It means that
we are not having to do quiteso much treatment of cracks for folks,
because once you have a crack inconcrete. You know, hairline cracks aren't
so bad, but you know,we can treat those. But with larger
cracks, it's not a matter ofIf it's a matter of wind, it's
probably coming back because once you havethat crack, you get moisture and dirt

(30:53):
down in there, and it justcauses problems. I guess as folks who
aren't on your business, we wethink of concrete it's hard stuff, it's
durable, but it's really not,is it. Well. I mean,
it's more durable than a lot ofthings, but it does come with its
own nuances, right, So andthat's a nice way of putting issue.
All concrete that's poured is typically gotslightly different mix, and so some of

(31:17):
it's harder and some of it's softer, and then you've got the porousness where
you get moisture down in there thatcauses issues or maybe mildew staining, or
you see, you know, littleweeds that try to grow up in between
areas. And so there's a lot, but hey, that keeps us in
business, right, there's a lotto do with it. And it's much
more affordable to treat what you alreadyhave and to make it beautiful again than

(31:40):
it is to rip it out andreport it. So Diamond Concrete Solutions and
we talk all the time again aboutlike we were with a garage, you
know, and putting in your yourfavorite team's colors. Yeah, or we've
talked before about just incredible designs andthe concrete around the home. Absolutely,

(32:01):
yeah, just just amazing stuff. But you also correct me I'm wrong here.
In some cases you got folks whojust they just want that concrete to
look better and to get cleaned upand maybe get seal can can can you
do that too? Yeah? Wecan do you know, wash and seal,
which is fabulous. There's permanent andsemi permanent sealers that are going to
protect the life and performance of theconcrete for you a little bit longer term

(32:25):
than just a pressure wash, whichwe recommend. And then there are just
more simple coatings and overlays that aremaybe one color or one coat that just
give you a nice, clean lookingsurface that's better looking than the ugly,
old stained concrete that you have.Right right, we've taught I think before
about how that that that seal reallyhelps with well, well, at least

(32:52):
we're not in pollen season right now, right, we'll be back around too
before. You know, it isgood for that. You know, it
does help that pollen to kind ofroll off or blow off and not be
stuck down in those pores like otherthings get stuck down the concrete pores.
But yeah, that the protect theprotective sealans are really great for you know

(33:12):
the value of your home and theproperty around it. So let me ask
you this question now, because againthings change you guys, stay busy.
I know somebody listening to like, wow, I would love to do my
garage floor, that's my tailgate spaceor maybe my my back but I gotta
slab out back or whatever, andman, I am the biggest gamecock or

(33:34):
tiger or bulldog or whatever family.Absolutely football season is underway now, yeah,
what's what's the chances of getting thisdone before this football season wraps up?
Well, it's great. We've actuallygot a dedicated team that does just
garage floors and so we can getthem in very quickly. We do have

(33:55):
a great relationship with some of thelocal pod dealers around here, so if
you need to run pod, wecan get your pod and you can get
stuff out quickly and get that youknow, scheduled very quickly, installed quickly,
and moved out of that pod quickly. So all you have to do
is give us a call and ifwe can do it during the middle of
the week for you, we canultimately have it done by the next Saturday.

(34:15):

(38:21):
good to have you along. Myname is Gary David, now joined
by Summer from Beaver Roofing and GuttersSummer. Good morning to you, Good
morning, good morning. Hey.Let me congratulate you first up, because
you guys have just won the awardsand ounced a couple of weeks ago best
of in the state newspaper readers pollwhen it comes to roofing to gutters into
Contracting two. But I don't wantanybody to be misled because if you,

(38:45):
if you happen to go back andglance at that very slickly produced State newspaper
best of catalog that was that wasnice. They spend some money on all.
Yes, you're gonna see under thatcategory roofing, gutters Contracting. The
winner is Anthony jo construction. Wellgot it. Yes, yeah, but
let's again remind folks that it's beaverroofing and gutters. It's it's still you.

(39:07):
It's still a j it's one thousandpercent. Yes, it's it's still
the folks who work for you,who put on these gutters. The folks
like Heath and the gang are there, the roofing folks and the warranties,
the guarantees, the uh the reviewsyou find online at Facebook and Google and
Angie and home Advisor. Yeah,it's same same thing, right, same

(39:30):
thing, same thing, yes, sir, Well, let's talk about it.
Thank you, Thank you for thatcongratulations. It does mean a lot
to us. You know, weworked really hard to make sure that our
customers still appreciate it, and youknow, we give them the best quality
work and and just do the bestthat we can for them. So you
know, it was such an honorto have been nominated, much less one

(39:52):
those you know, those categories. So it was it was awesome. We
we got to thank our customers too, So thank you. And you know,
if we back up a little bit, I mean, you guys have
been in business. You and AJstarted this company a little over ten years
ago, I guess now, right, that's right, yes, sir,
okay, So I mean this isthis is a local, homegrown company.

(40:14):
How did you start? Was itthe contracting stuff? I mean, how
did it all begin? Summer? It was it was the contracting stuff.
So aj you know, he startedout with just him doing smaller kind of
bidding jobs and you know, hewould he would, you know, do
a job and it would be great, you know, and then we get

(40:37):
the inspection and then just you know, a little by little word of mouth.
You know, we grew, wegrew, we grew, we grew,
and and here we are today, you know, and it's just it's
it's incredible really to think where, you know, where we started to where
we are now. You know,I in the beginning stages, I say,
when I used to work, Iyou know, I didn't always work

(40:58):
with the company. But I guessabout five years ago when I've actually got
pregnant, and you know, hewas like, well, no better time
now than to us quit work andyou know, hop on board full time
here and you know, have youknow, have the babies with you.
And that's that's what we've done.So it's been a whirlwind to think that

(41:19):
you know where we've where we comeand and whatnot. So we're we are
so thankful and very appreciative to ourcustomers for their continued support and you know,
just for everything, well, itis well deserved summer, I mean
it really is. And you guyshave done work from my family's been,
you've done contracting work. Uh.You know, you guys upgraded a home

(41:40):
of ours about four years ago. We're so we put it up for sale,
and I know for a fact thatwe wouldn't have gotten more than top
dollar like we did. And thiswas a pre pandemic now, okay,
right, pre pandemic had it notbeen for the outstanding work y'all did you
have this past summer you'll put gutterson our home, the six inch seamles
gutters, and I think probably nextspring, you know, we're probably talking

(42:00):
about, you know, replacing ourroofs. So whenever you're ready, we
are here, let's let's talk aboutroof because we haven't talked about them in
a little while now, because that'sthat's a big and again we let's point
out that because uh, the roofingand gutter's portion of your business has grown
so amazingly over the years. Thisis this is why you've kind of branched

(42:23):
it out and at least rebranded asBeaver Roofing and Gutters. That is exactly
right. So like you said,we've just we've grown and grown and grown
that roofing, the roofing part andyeah we sorry, yes it's mom time.

(42:46):
That's okay. Yeah, so we'vewe've we've grown and grown and grown
and the roofing and the gutter portions, and you know what we were said,
it's time to just to get thatoff and here we go. We're
going to have new name, samepeople, but new name. We want

(43:06):
to be more recognizable. You know, before Anthony John Construction, it didn't
have roofing in the name, right, So here we are Beaver Roofing and
Gutters and sam plain and simple thatis exactly what that company does. So
yep, that is it growth. And here we are with Beaver Roofing and
Gutters and we are super excited forbranding and and to get our name out

(43:27):
there because we are the same.We want everybody to know the quality,
the work. Everything's the same, the people are the same, but we
just have a new name and anew number, which is great. New
number eight oh three none none oneroof m easy to remember. That's by
the way, absolutely so those likeme challenged on the computer on the telephone

(43:50):
keyboard at seven six six three. All right, well, let's let's talk
a bit about roofing here. Andyou know, during the week when we
talk about y'all business, I oftenmentioned and I refer back to an email
I got from a listener, andthis would have been Thanksgiving probably about three
years ago, now, maybe maybetwo three years ago. Who made a

(44:12):
mistake. We had a thunderstorm rollthrough that time of the year, that
that that fall, that late fall, and he had a not a big
problem but just just a minor holein his roof that he needed to be
fixed up. And rather than callyou guys first, he calls somebody else.
He listens to the show all thetime. He knows all about you,

(44:36):
But for whatever reason, he woundup calling somebody else, and surprise,
surprise, he was told, well, it's going to be three months
before we can get to you.Three months. Now again, you got
a hole in your roof. Idon't care how big house small. All
right, you don't need the wholeroof replaced, but you need that fixed,
and you got you got somebody whosays they do roof repairs telling you

(45:00):
it's gonna be three months before wecan get to you. All right,
No boy, right, nobody's thatincredible, nobody's that busy summer. I
mean, come on, there isplenty of work for everybody, you know,
But it's just how you treat yourcustomers and how you know, it's
basically how you'd want your home treated. You know, you can't, like
you said, you can't have ahole in your roof for three months?

(45:20):
What is this gentleman or homeowners supposedto do? You know? So yeah,
I I remember specifically the customers. You know, we got out there,
got him taken care of, andhe was just ecstatic, you know,
like you said, No he didnot need a full roof replacement.
And we're not here to sell everybodya full roof every time when it's not

(45:42):
warranted. Right, you know,we're out there, we're gonna evaluate it.
We're gonna get you back to youknow, back to no water penetration,
Nope, you know nothing where you'reyou got your dry. How about
that, you're you're dry, You'renot getting leaked on or anything like that.
So we may repairs, we doreplacements. You know, we're not

(46:05):
here just oh only only roof replacement. That's not what we're here to do.
And as I recall, that listenertold me that y'all right there within
twenty four hours and uh yeah, once you were done, he couldn't even
tell was ever a problem. Socongratulations again. But this brings us up
to another issue here summer, thatthere are also companies out there who just
plane flat don't do roof repairs, which is really weird to me, but

(46:30):
they don't. So but but here'shere's the danger. Right if you have
an issue with your roof and youwind up with a company that only does
roof replacements, guess what You're goingto get a roof replacement. That's it.
So let's talk about from an educationalstandpoint here. As a homeowner,

(46:52):
when you have an issue with yourroof, are there any things you want
to be on the lookout for itfor? If a roofer just comes in
right away and says, yeah, you need a whole new roof, I
mean, how can you know itwas a home uner whether you're getting the
straight scoop or not. So absolutely, totally get it. So what there

(47:15):
are so a lot of different reasonswhy you know, people will call in
here of late. Obviously we havehad a lot of storm damage or you
know storms, winds, how windslike that, So that's a that's a
whole another situation. But you know, we'll go down that hole in just

(47:35):
a second or that round and justa second, so whatever, you know,
we come out, we're gonna getup on the roof, We're gonna
take photos. We're gonna show youwhat you have going on. So that's
the main thing. You know,a lot of times they're just oh yeah,
that's it. Saw a lot ofstuff going on up there, but
it's probably best. Let's just goahead and and you know, let's replace

(47:57):
it all. No, we're gonnatake into can't. We're gonna take a
look at your pipe boots. We'regonna look at the grit and the granule
on your shingles that are still less. You know, we're gonna educate you
about what you have going on withyour roof right now. And a lot
of times, you know, roofsare they're still they're in great condition,
but they just need a little bitof TLC. If you will so we'll

(48:20):
put an extra ceiling around those pipeboots that bent out from your your bathroom
fans or you know, you thefans over your ovens and things like that.
So we'll put a little extra cockaround there. Some time roofs get
nail pops, we can put someceiling over that. That's not a big
deal. You know. We're justgonna and we're gonna make sure that it's

(48:43):
it's it's in good shape. Becauseif you still have the good granule,
your decking feels great, you don'thave any leaks on the inside, you
don't necessarily need a whole new roofs, right. And I guess one of
the things that kind of protects theconsumer and situation like this is if if
a roof and company just comes outand says, yeah, you need a
roof replacement, well you could becalling your insurance company to begin with.

(49:06):
I guess if there's been damage thatis correct, you know, And that's
that's what I want to point out. Whenever we get up there, we're
gonna take a look at what youhave going on in that in that time,
and if we don't see marked uh, you know, shingle lifting and
hail spots and things like that allover the roof. There's no real reason

(49:27):
to get that roof replacement. However, if we do get up there and
we do see damage where wind haslifted the shingles and we see creeping,
or if there's hail or you know, you have your shingles are in bad
shape, we're gonna let you know. And the new thing I know that
you guys do then is you don'tleave it just up to the homeowner to

(49:50):
deal with the insurance company. Right, We're gonna help you along the way
because a lot of times, youknow, you haven't done acclaim or where
do I what do I do?Who do I call? How do I
go about this? You know? So, yeah, we're gonna be there
every step of the way. We'regonna help you. We'll be there when
you call your insurance company let themknow what you have going on. You've

(50:10):
had a roofing contractor out, they'veseen some damage. You'd like to have
an adjuster out. We're gonna bethere to meet that adjuster, talk with
him, go over things that we'veseen and things of that nature. You
know, we're not going to leaveyou high and dry, and we're gonna
be We're gonna advocate for you aswell. So let's let's talk about this
here for a second summer. Let'ssay somebody listening today just built a brand

(50:34):
new home. I've got a beautiful, nice roof on there on average around
here? How long can they expectthat roof to be fully functional? And
at what point in time should theythink? How many years down the road?
But I need to look at replacingthis thing. I'm okay, brand
new roof, just just finished ityesterday. What's the life of a roof
in a place like like the middlesof South Carolina on average? Sure,

(50:59):
so we hear, Oh, I'vegot lifetime shingles. I'm going to be
good to go forever, not necessarily, not so much so generally, like
you said, brand new roof,we're gonna start thinking maybe fifteen to twenty
years down the road, maybe weneed to start thinking about replacing the roof.

(51:22):
However, however you maintain your roofis going to give that longevity as
well, so as long as youare doing what you need to do to
maintain it, getting just annual roofinginspections to take a look to make sure
all of my pipe boots are ingood shape, My ridgements in good shape.

(51:43):
All of the components of your roofare in good shape. You know
if you if you don't, youknow it can it can be sooner.
You know, the water can getto it. If you have pine straw
and leaves that are just piled upon your roof. That makes these all
of these things impact the your roof, you know, and how it how

(52:07):
it does its job. Beaver Roofingand Gutters are always a pleasure to talk
to you summer and give us thatbrand new phone number, that brand new
