Speaker 1 (00:00):
Start one oh five point seven. Time to get an
update from the weekend. The news you need to start
your day. It's the West Michigan Wake Up powered by
Minards on Star one oh five point seven. Well it's
maybe not gray, considering it's very cold and slick this morning,
but Michigan has just been ranked the most dangerous state
for winter driving. This comes from money Geek. It finds

(00:21):
on average, nearly four hundred people die every year in
winter weather related crashes, and they are now highlighting the
most dangerous states for these drivers. Taking analysis and data
from twenty twenty through twenty twenty three, they looked at
things with a high score of one hundred, and Michigan
had the most winter driving fatalities with one hundred and

(00:43):
fifty six in this time span, an average of thirty
nine deaths per year, over forty six more than the
next most dangerous state on the list, Pennsylvania. Wow, this
is really rough stuff. Again. Reminders to slow down and
leave extra space between vehicles, through your windows and lights,
and turn on headlights a big one according to this study.

(01:06):
As hundreds of millions of Americans prepare to hit the
stores and shop this season online and in person scams
have seen a massive uptick and unbelievably the most common
victims this time around people aged eighteen to twenty four.
Here's a big one from the BBB. They offer advice

(01:27):
on how to avoid scams. Never ever send money through
a gift card, a wired transfer or online. Avoid clicking
those links from unknown sources. Be wary of people you
meet online, especially online marketplace sellers and buyers. Never share
your personal information, and whatever you do, don't be pressured
into making a sudden purchase. Now. Parents across the country

(01:51):
are also looking at some big gift giving for their
kids that may include technology. Well hold on. A new
study from the Journal Pediatric suggests a new cell phone
could have dangerous consequences for kids. The study looked at
the emotional and physical well being as part of an
ABCD study. It's the adolescent brain cognitive development. The age

(02:15):
at which you get a phone is directly linked to
risks of depression, obesity, and insufficient sleep. They're telling parents,
whatever you do, hold off for as long as possible,
and try not to get any child under the age
of twelve a device. They view smartphones as a significant

(02:35):
factor in teen health, saying a phone has serious, serious impacts.
While this is a very very hard conversation to have,
this new study is pushing you to wait as long
as possible, even later into the teen years, because they
have found it will lead to behavioral issues into adulthood.
Taking a look at sports cade Cunningham with a big

(02:57):
help to taking the Pistons to victory Saturday night over
Milwaukee one hundred twenty four to one hundred and twelve.
Patrick Kin scoring the tibreaking goal for our Red Wings.
They beat the Seattle Kraken Saturday Night. Big news for

football team who will go at it in the Cheese
It Citrus Bowl. This is New Year's Eve taking on
the University of Texas. Looking at action for tonight. We
