Speaker 1 (00:00):
West Michigan's official Christmas station, getting you up and add
it on a Friday, the news you need to start
your day. It's the West Michigan Wake Up, powered by
Benards on Star one oh five point seven. Good morning,
my friends in Shmidty. We'll start with the breaking news
yesterday Nancy Pelosi, the first and only female Speaker of

(00:20):
the US House of Representatives, one of the most powerful
figures in democratic politics for decades, announcing she will not
seek reelection.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
There has been no greater honor for me than to
stand on the House floor and say I speak for
the people of San Francisco. I have truly loved serving
as your voice and Congress, and I've always honored the
song of Saint Francis. Lord, make me an instrument of
thy piece, the anthem of our city.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
Nearly forty years serving in politics, she will have one
year more until retirement. Also, a federal judge in Rhode
Island ordering Trump administration to find the money and fully
fund SNAP benefits for the remainder of November. The ruling
gives President Trump's admin just until Friday today to make

(01:11):
payments through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The order was
in response to a challenge from cities and nonprofits complaining
the administration was only offering to cover sixty five percent
of the max benefit, a decision that would have left
many recipients getting absolutely nothing this month. We will see
if that is appealed. Oh right on time. We kicked

(01:32):
off that Christmas music and we've got our first chance
at snow. That's right. We were waking up to a
very wet morning this morning, but according to Storm Team
Meets Sarah Flynn, that could change by Sunday. A break
Friday night, a break for much of the day on Saturday,
and there's that secondary system passing off to our south
overnight Saturday and a Sunday. It will initially follows rain,

(01:52):
but as those temperatures tumble overnight, that's what I'll open
up the door for perhaps a bit of a wintry
mix and even some snow. Oh boy, very interesting Sunday.
Let's get into your sports. Unfortunately, very sad news this morning.
Grand Rapids native, former Western Michigan Bronco and NFL player
Marshawn Neeland has died at the age of twenty four

(02:15):
in what police in Texas are describing as an apparent suicide.
The Dallas Cowboys announcing his death yesterday morning. The defensive
end was in his second NFL season, had an incredible
game Monday night, his first NFL touchdown. According to the statement,
it is with extreme sadness we share Marshawn tragically passed
this morning. He was a beloved teammate and member of

(02:36):
our organization. Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend,
Catalina and his family. Woodva actually caught up with his
high school coach, Carlton Brewster, who said he was true
man of character, always.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
Worked hard, endurance, grace, stamina, just a great kid. Always
had a smile on his face. Never really never complain
this a positive energy. It just a good kid, good
kid to be around.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
Very very sad news and looking at some big action
this weekend. It starts tonight. Outside of high school football playoffs,
we will see the Red Wings taking on New York.
You can hear that on WTKG. We've got a bye
weekend in football for all of our big U of
MMSU and CMU fans. But we will have the Calvin
Hope College rivalry ninety six to one the game tomorrow afternoon.

(03:26):
Michigan State Basketball on Big One one point three and
U of M hockey on TKG. Looking ahead to Sunday,
the Red Wings take on Chicago Lions at Washington and
our Griffins in action against Chicago with the Pistons Sunday
night taken on Philly. I've got the schedule for you
with everything in Adwest Michigan Star dot com. If you're
