Speaker 1 (00:00):
What collection and completion of our visits talking about high
school football and college football involving teams in the state
of Texas would be complete without checking in one final
time with Greg Tepper, managing editor of Dave Campbell's Texas
Football Magazine, who yesterday morning at ten thirty in the morning,
alongside Aaron Hardiget in yours truly sat in a studio

(00:24):
to do our final high school Scoreboard live show the year.
And it was live yesterday morning at ten thirty, and
we're still checking our extremities for frostbaw. I have never
ever been in a studio that cold. They said it
was fifty five. It seemed like thirty five in there.
That was brutal, wasn't it.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
It was really cold. Now, for those who don't know
and those who haven't been on television, it is not
unusual for it to be cool in a studio like
simply because like the lights do get really hot, and
so that is not a surprise. But it is not
supposed to be antarctic in there. But it was freezing

(01:02):
in there. But it was a nice wake up call
after four long days at atnc STATED for the state championships.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
Yeah, yeah, it was. It was quite the grind for
everybody that everybody looks forward to. But I'm going to
come back to that. Man, Let's go college. First of all,
you are quite often I'll give you credit for this.
You often point out when your predictions are wrong, even
as much as you point out when your predictions are correct.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
So I give you, I give you credit for this.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
You said UTSA was not going to lose its bowl
game because Jeff Trailer was not going to have a
losing season. He's never had a losing season, and he
still has never had a losing season because they just
blasted the Shana Clears the Beach Chickens today from Coastal
Carolina there in the Myrtle Beach Bowl forty four to
fifteen on.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Their own field. By the way, Yeah, reminder that was
a home game for Coastal Carolina and UTSA took care
of business. But yeah, he has never had a losing season,
either it was at Gilmer High School or as a
head or at UTSA, He's never had a losing season.
And bowl games, ultimately, aside from the college football playoffs,
they are ultimately, in my opinion, a measurement of how

(02:11):
much you want to be there and how motivated you are,
and UTSA I knew they were going to be motivated
in the same way that I think Texas Tech's a
lock to win their bowl game simply because you know
Joey mcgarre is gonna have his boys fired up, ready
to go come out of the gates. Those are the
types of things that it's a measurement more of how
well you motivate your kids as opposed to how good

(02:33):
you are. And that's that's why I it's not a
surprise to see UTSA go there, go out there and
take care of business against the schantz Claires.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
Since you brought up Texas Tech, let's let's talk about
that Liberty Bolt match up with with Arkansas Old Southwest
Conference Days matchup. And you say you certainly are expecting
the Red Raiders to be primed for the fight.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
Yeah, it should be. I think they absolutely should be.
The other thing I think is important to know is
that while they have taken some hits in the transfer portal,
I don't know that they've taken like the critical blow
in the trade boil. Yes, Michael Hudson is obviously a
big hit for them to lose him to the Portal,
but I think that when you take a look at
their roster as far as contributing players, it is largely intact.

(03:18):
Arkansas has been hit relatively hard by the Portal, and
so I would expect the Texas Tech, again, just from
a motivational perspective, should be at least a small favorite
in this game, simply because I think that the motivational
factor is going to be on their side.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
About Sam Houston, this is interesting. So the Bearcats finally
get into a bowl game the first full season that
there was great excitement about that, and then Casey Keeler
leaves to be the head coach at Temple. So he leaves,
they go on without him. They win the bowl game,
beating Georgia Southern in the New Orleans both thirty one

(03:53):
to twenty six. Now, now Phil Longo is the new
head coach.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Huh yeah. And Phil Longo is is a no and
beloved figure around Sam Houston, a former offensive coordinator who's
who's kind of coming home. I would expect them to, uh,
you know, to to really lean in on this idea
of of of high flying offense that's kind of his
calling card. I would expect them to really lean in,
and especially in the state of Texas, I think that

(04:17):
because of the depth of talent here, they can really
clean up on the recruiting trail and go out there
and get guys. One of the things that I'm interested
in as far as the way that college football is breaking,
is that programs like sam Houston can sometimes serve as
feeder tea theater schools for you know, bigger programs. You start,
you you're you thrive at sam Houston. Now, you know,

(04:38):
you go into the transfer portal, you get an opportunity
to play at a power for school or something like that.
And so I would expect to see Sam Houston really
hit the ground running and allow their guys, really get
their guys to play early.

Speaker 3 (04:49):
I think.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
I think one of the things that you'll see from
them is that Sam Houston may in fact start becoming
one of the youngest teams in the state as far
or in the nation brother as far as they're starting.
Starting players are concerned simply because that's kind of necessary
to go out there, because you don't know how long
you're gonna be able to hold.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
On to these guys.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
But Phil Longo is a guy that I think is
going to be able to utilize that to his advantage
and say, hey, if you're a young star who's been
a little bit overlooked maybe by the power for schools,
come to sam Houston and show out, and we can
we can put on a show out here in the woods.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
Interesting, all right, So we talked about Texas Tech at
Arkansas and and let's let's let me get your thoughts
in the other bowl games. Uh, TCU is playing Louisiana
in the isleta New Mexico Bowl. Uh there this coming
Saturday at TISHU did kind of write the ship a
little bit down the stretch and wound up eight four
after things.

Speaker 3 (05:39):
Look, we're not looking good for the Frogs for a while.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
Yeah, And actually they were, like going into that final
week of the regular seasons, they had like a bank
shot chance of making the Big twelve championship teams.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
Yeah, it was.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
A weird, a weird kind of break. But they got
hot late and and trending certainly in the right way,
which I think is good for Sunny Dykes. After again
and a disappointing twenty twenty three follow up to their
run of the College Football National Championship Game, they've righted
the ship. As far as trajectory is concerned, I think
they are probably pointing in the right direction. But Louisiana

(06:12):
is going to be a team certainly to keep an
eye on, simply because that's a team coming out of
the Sun Belt that was that was playing exceptionally well.
At one point they had a real outside shot at
the College Football Playoff. At the playoff, I've been particularly
generous to the G five. That's that's a good team,
and it'll be it'll be a real test, I think
for the Frogs.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
And then you know, even though Louisiana had it was
a weird deal. They had the disappointing home lost Marshall
in the Sun Belt Championship game, and then Marshall has
to opt out of the bowl game because they lose
their head coach. And what thirty six players in the portal.
What a weird deal that was Baylor in LSU New
Year's even the afternoon playing in the Texas.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
Both sure Bay's playing Baylor's again a team that that
you to talk about from the depths. I mean, they
were we were we were making lists of like who's
gonna be the next head coach at Baylor, but they
have pulled it out of a ditch in a big,
big way. I mean, arguably the hottest team in Texas
outside you know, maybe the Longhorns. Uh they are, they

(07:15):
are white hot, playing exceptionally well. You know, they've really
settled in under sorry Roberts and their quarterback.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
And again, if you want to talk about a team
that probably wants to be there more than l s U,
I think I think that tends to favor Baylor in
that instance. Should be should be a good crowd to
not as well, that's pretty local draw draw for them
down in Houston, and Baylor should show up, well, I
think it will be a good crowd. And yeah, I
think Baylor's got an opportunity to go out there and
get a real uh, get a real feather in their

(07:41):
cap to close out what I think is a is
a real uh retrenching season.

Speaker 3 (07:45):
Yeah all right, So.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
How about your thoughts on Texas A and M with
all the ups and downs, and of course they had
the uh the loss uh to Texas afterwards, but they
have a chance to kind of, like you said, right
the ship in the bowl game and a lot of
a lot of people really liked them in their bowl
game against USC and Las Vegas as Friday.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
I think that I think they should I don't think
this USC team is anything to write home about. They've
been clobbered pretty well in the portal themselves, and and
a lot of this will ultimately come down to, you know,
Marcel Reid, I think is in an interesting spot now
now that Connor Wegman is in the portal where he's
pretty clearly you know, at least for you know, he

(08:26):
will enter as the clear favorite to win the job
in twenty twenty five, and so I'm very interested to
see exactly how well he plays. He played a little
bit looser as a result. Uh And and should be
you know, it should be. I think they should be USC.
I think they're probably better than USC, especially you know,
I think you give you and Mike Elco a month
the game plan for somebody. Defensively, I think he's gonna

(08:47):
have an he's got something.

Speaker 1 (08:48):
For him, Okay, and then and then the last college
know that before jump to high school. I'm a little
uh uh, I feel a little weird and even bring
this up because it's not a school from the state
of Texas, but he is a bowl game in Fort Worth.
Does it just seem weird to you that Oklahoma is
playing in a bowl game in Fort Worth?

Speaker 3 (09:05):
Playing in the Armed Forces Bowl?

Speaker 2 (09:08):
Uh? Yeah, But but it's it's one of those things
where you know, remember there's an argument to be made,
and certainly o U fans is going to be small
comfort to them that that they shouldn't even be in
a bowl game to begin with. I mean they had
to beat Alabama to get into a bowl game basically.
But yeah, now they will return to their to a
place that used to play conference games. Uh there in

(09:30):
Fort Worth and playing the Armed Forces Bowl? Again, how
how motivated are they?

Speaker 1 (09:36):
Like?

Speaker 2 (09:36):
Are they happy to be there or would they rather
be at home? And that's kind of the issue. Is
a lost season for OU. Uh, they kind of pulled it,
you know, the big one over Oklahoma. I think was
probably their their biggest opportunity. So I don't know if
I spuck a whole lot from the Sooners there and forwarth.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
Yeah, listen, if you're offering me Metroplex Bowl choice between
the Armed Forces Bowl, uh, you know with Oklam and
Navy or the First Responda Bowl with Texas with North
Texas and Texas State I'm probably gonna take the first responderblel.
I think it'll be a good game.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
I think it'll be a good game, and I also
know where the party will be. Okay, that is going
to be a scene out there North Texas and Texas State,
Are you kidne me? They are going to remember last year?
This is the game where they ran out of beer
at the at the SNU Stadium. I would expect that
they should probably be prepared for a similar situation.

Speaker 3 (10:30):
Yeah, no doubt about it.

Speaker 1 (10:31):
Visiting with Greg Tepper, managing enter Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine.
All right, let's let's talk about the state championship. I
want to talk about what you guys have on your
website today at Texas Football dot com. An all state
championship team. Now, I take it you convened your group
and came up with these selections.

Speaker 2 (10:50):
It's a team effort. Yeah, it's put together by our
own Carter Yates and he we ultimately gave him a
final say. But we as a team where we served
as consultants for young Carter to put together a team.
But yeah, after watching twelve state championship games, we wanted
to make sure we honored some of the best performances
that we saw at every position, and there were some
positions that it was there. There are some and there's

(11:12):
some snubs playing and simple. There's there's no two ways
about it. When you've got some of those outstanding performances
that we saw playing simple, there were going to be
some snubs.

Speaker 1 (11:20):
Yeah, I'm glad he least gave Adam shobl an honorable
mention and Bo Bentley played great. But if if it
were me, I'd probably have gone with Showbull in that.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
You know, that's and that was I'll tell you that
was the hottest debate was was it going to be
Showbul or was it going to be Bentley as the
quarterback of this team, of this all state championship team.
Both were dynamite, Both were fantastic. We went with We
went with Bo Bentley simply because I think the numbers
were a little bit better, uh, and he was so
much more involved in the offense, you know, Adam Showbelt

(11:51):
certainly they had a great running game as well with
Grayson rig Dino, which I think helped them as well.
I'll say this, this is a weird thing to say.
If you want to go from a peer impact perspective,
I could be talking to Bryce Olman at Canado, who
was yeh, so good for the Indians there. You know,
that's the kind of thing where it's like, if you're
box Score scouting, you're not going to be overly impressed.

(12:12):
But some of the throws that he made to bring
the Indians a triple overtime thriller win over Stanford certainly
worthy of some recognition there.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
Hey, you know, here's the true confession to the name
went straight out of my head yesterday when we were
talking about uh, when you were talking about the feel
good stories and who might who might be just the
overall impact, the name Keeland Sweeney.

Speaker 3 (12:37):
Went right out of my head.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
And that's what I was trying to think of, because
what he did at Randall tip the dude wasn't even
on their depth chart as a quarterback.

Speaker 3 (12:46):
He was on the depth chart as wide receiver.

Speaker 1 (12:48):
He rushes for a touchdown, passes and and uh and
and throws one. I mean, it's it's amazing, and receives
one as well.

Speaker 2 (12:57):
And yeah, and Kielan Sweeney is I think in like
an embodiment of that Randall win. Where again, if you're
box Score scouting, there's no way, there's no way Randall
wins that game. No, they were outgained Craig by two
hundred and fifty yards by South Oak Cliff. I mean,
there's a real argument to be made that South Oak

(13:18):
Cliffs had the superior offense and the superior defense in
this game, but the margins were so in favor of
winning on the margins were so in favor of this
Randall team. Two kickoff returns for a touchdown, They took
advantage of short fields, they came up with big play
after big play when it mattered most, and their bodes
their neck. And for Randall, that is one of the

(13:41):
more unlikely wins, not necessarily because they weren't good, but
simply because of the way the game played out and
Kieland Sweeney in the center of it coming up with
those big clutch moments for Randall to bring home their
first state championship.

Speaker 1 (13:53):
All right, final thing here, what's your biggest takeaway from
these state championships?

Speaker 2 (13:58):
I think my biggest takeaway is probably just the amount
of new blood, even if it's kind of like blood
we've seen before, but it's been a while. Of the
twelve state champions only four had won a championship in
the last fifteen years. That includes a number of first
time state champions. Canado's a first time stage champion, Columbus
is the first time state champion, Randall obviously first time

(14:21):
state champion as well. Vandergriff gets their first title. But
then you've also got like the return of Salina to
the first time. Jaydon has win the title for the
first time since the mid eighties. It's been a while
since we've talked about them. North Crowley wins their first
house since two thousand and three, and so there was
kind of a I think the surge of depth within
these pro within the tests high school football was evident

(14:43):
on the big stage, and it played out in our
state champions list.

Speaker 3 (14:47):
No doubt about it.

Speaker 1 (14:48):
Hey have a great Christmas holiday and all that kind
of stuff. I know, we'll touch base around the corner
and everything. You get to relax just a little bit,
don't you for a little bit.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
Yeah? Yeah, But I got to go home, and I
don't think my kids are listening, So that's okay. I
gotta go like build hot wheel stuff for them so
that when they come downstairs on Christmas. I mean, Dad's
about to go. I'm about to go to work in
a different way right now.

Speaker 1 (15:10):
Been there, done that, Understand the whole deal. Hey, at
least you're not dealing with dollhouses. Trust me. You have
to trust me. That is all right, Hey, thanks Tap,
appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (15:18):
Man. All right, Mary Chris YouTube.

Speaker 1 (15:21):
All right, that's Greg Tapper, managing editor Dave Campbell's Texas
Football magazine. We had a good time he and Aaron
Hartigan and I on our final show with the season
yesterday and talked about all the state champions and all
the themes and everything that resonated through all of that.
All right, Up next, we're gonna hear more from Sark
and from Kenny Dillingham when we continue on Sports Radio
AAM thirteen under the Zone.
