A listener confesses to accepting an offer that sounds almost too good to be true. After his talented son was recruited by a highly competitive travel baseball team, the coach made an unexpected promise: if his son joined the team, he could help him land a job at his company. The opportunity ended up doubling his salary and putting his family in a much better financial position. Now he's wondering if he simply took advantage of a great opportunity... or if he crossed an ethical line. Was it networking, favoritism, or something in between? Billy, Candice, and Producer Pooh dive into the world of elite youth sports, ambitious parents, and the lengths families will go to secure a better future.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Get it off your chest.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
It's Dirty Little Secret with Billy the Kid in the
Morning on Mix 102.9.

Speaker 3 (00:05):
Brought to you by Mint Dentistry.

Speaker 4 (00:08):
It is time to confess. And this guy, he just
moves here and he... He's a brand new listener, which
I appreciate very much.

Speaker 3 (00:13):
Thank you. But he's like, I got a confession. I'm just,
should I tell you? I'm like, yeah, bring it on.
Let's go. Anytime you want. 833-787-1029. Confess.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Yeah, don't hate me, but I got a confession that
makes me sound like one of those insane baseball parents.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
I basically accepted a bribe to get my son on
a certain team.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Oh. Whoa. Okay.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
You accepted a bribe to get him on a team. Why?
How did this go down?

Speaker 4 (00:41):
All right.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
I don't want to give too many details because people
around here would probably figure out exactly who I'm talking about.
But where we live, baseball is ridiculously competitive. You know,
it's all about who you know. And these kids aren't
even in high school yet. And, you know, they're talking
about colleges, scholarships, you know, and then certain kids, you know,

(01:02):
moving on to like, you know, MLB, you know, and, uh,
my son's really good, really good.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
He's, he's, he's naturally gifted. Good. And I love, he
loves baseball. And so he.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Eventually coaches from some pretty high-level premier travel teams started
calling me and basically recruiting him, right?

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Wow. Travel teams?

Speaker 4 (01:24):
You know, I mean, but I believe it because I
know my son, he stopped playing baseball, but it's the
same with football.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
It's even worse around here. Oh, it gets crazy.

Speaker 4 (01:32):
Because we're deep in the baseball and hearing.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
About all the drama.

Speaker 4 (01:34):
Oh, it starts. The drama starts. You got to get
on certain teams to get good looks. They start talking
about high school. It's wild. So- Coaches start calling you,
which is good for you. I mean, if your kid's
great and he loves it.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
There was this one particular high profile team my son
really wanted to go for. And the coach reached out
to me and we had some conversations. And it turns
out we both work.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
In the same industry.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
And that's when things got weird because doing one of
the conversations, he basically told me, hey, if your son
plays for my team, I can guarantee a position at
my company.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Oh, wow.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
So he, he guaranteed you a position. So your kid
plays for my team. Then dad will get a job.
You'll get a job with his company.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Right. Right.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
I thought it was a joke at first. You know
what I'm saying? Like, We're talking about kids playing baseball here, okay? Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
I'd be like, are you serious? I wouldn't even expect that, so... No.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
In my defense, this was probably the team we were
going to choose anyway. My son wanted to go play there,
and it's a great opportunity for.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
Him, so we picked a team, okay?

Speaker 2 (02:41):
We picked a team, and the coach was a man
of his word.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
Like... Soon after, I got a position at his company,
basically doubled my salary.

Speaker 4 (02:49):
So you're working for him now. So you're working with
the coach, his company, and he was legit.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
It was a legit offer.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Is this legal?

Speaker 3 (03:01):
It feels illegal. I mean, they do this all the time.

Speaker 4 (03:04):
My 14-year-old son, his friend, his dad got a job,
a brand new job in Chicago.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
Melissa, Texas. And they moved out there. He's real good
in football. Oh, okay. Well, that was to move.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
Now, I've heard of that happening before. Like, hey, we
want you to play for our school.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
Right.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
So move schools. But you'd need a reason to move
out here.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
Like travel baseball?

Speaker 1 (03:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
It gets serious early. Wow.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
Okay. You're committed to this. And now, what if something
happens with the baseball team? Right.

Speaker 4 (03:35):
Your son doesn't. I mean, I guess you're going to
build a relationship with this guy either way. But I mean,
good for you, I guess, for doubling your salary.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
It's hard to pass up.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
Listen, man, my son is thrilled. He's playing for a
team he wanted. That's what it's all about. I'm in
a much better position.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
Financially and career wise. Everybody wins.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
OK, so the only thing, though, is that I haven't
told anyone how it happened and not even my wife.
And she thinks my new job and her son making
this team happen around the same time by complete coincidence.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
Really?

Speaker 3 (04:06):
So she, okay. She doesn't know?

Speaker 1 (04:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
I mean, I'm sort of pointing to letting this stay
like that.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
All right. That's, it seems like a lot, but I mean,
I don't.

Speaker 4 (04:18):
Yeah, that's definitely a conversation we have together before we
agree to it.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
Let me ask Candace, cause you're a baseball mom.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (04:25):
If this happens in, you know, there's a situation where
your son could get on a good team or a
certain team and, Hey, you know, I can get you, Eric,
I can get you a job doing this if your
son picks our team and it works out good for everyone.

Speaker 3 (04:39):
Do you do it? That's hard to pass up.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
Both ends. You know, she can be bought. Candace can
be bought.

Speaker 4 (04:47):
I mean, these coaches are picking who they want on
their travel teams anyways, right?

Speaker 3 (04:51):
They are.

Speaker 4 (04:51):
That's true.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
They are.

Speaker 4 (04:52):
I just.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
Yeah. I mean, yeah.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
If he's good enough to play on the team and
that's the team we want.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
To play on. That's fair.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
If he's not good enough or there's some reverse situation. Exactly.
Where you're bribing the coach, that feels way different.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
Right.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
Okay. But what if something happens to your kid?

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Like.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
An injury. You get fired from your job. No. Everything's baking.
So what if something happens to the son? I mean,
how much do you trust this guy? Yeah. That's what
I'm saying. You're fired. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
Geez.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
Well, I mean, for now, he's making more money.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
Worry about that when the day comes. Yeah, look at that.

Speaker 4 (05:31):
Well, sir, thank you so much and appreciate your confession
and let us know what happens and hopefully you'll have
a great season.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
All right. Thank you.
