Speaker 1 (00:00):
Marty Baum alongside Coach Jeff Wechter, Bishop McDevitt High School,
and coached a win last week against CD East, 2-0
for the year.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Some things that we'll talk about that game.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
Something just, I know Art wanted me to talk a
little bit about this, and that's just how it feels
to have a lot of the grads, some you're seeing
on TV, you know, on Saturdays, but a lot playing
at different colleges, different levels. What's that like for you?
Speaker 2 (00:29):
It's great.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
You know, one of the day, you know, so I
have a very busy week. The only night I don't
work on football after practice is on Thursday. Thursday is
my kind of family day. Get away from it a
little bit. Then it's obviously all day Friday. So Saturday
I get up in the morning. I break down our
game film, which takes about three, four hours. But then I,
you know, I want to get away from football, McDevitt
(00:51):
football anyways. And to sit and watch college football, especially
it's I'm flipping back and forth.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Watching former players in each game and, and, you know,
you know.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
It's obviously, I'm very, very pleased with the kids. I mean, that's, again,
it's great winning state titles. It's great, um, winning district
titles and, and all the accolades, but to see these
guys succeed in life, um, not just football, but, you know,
a lot of their dreams, you know, to go play,
especially division one, but we've, we've got plenty of guys
(01:24):
playing division two and three and, you know, um, I
get up early on a Sunday morning and start breaking
down film with the other team. But one of the
first things I do is either Saturday night or Sunday morning,
I go through the box scores of almost every player
that we have playing in college. If I didn't see
them on TV or, you know, especially at the Division
(01:45):
II level. You know, so it's– to have so many.
I mean, this is one of the most we've ever
had in one stint. I think COVID helped out that
a little bit because we still got– you know, like
pal who's, who's playing division one quarterback, uh, you know,
as a six year, because he got a COVID year. Um,
so it's exciting to, you know, sit there, you know,
(02:08):
Saturday afternoon and watch Rico Scott playing for Alabama. And, uh,
you know, um, I didn't get to see it, but,
you know, coach Minnick and coach Braden, you know, watch
Riley Robel.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
And they said he was just kicking butt out there.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
And, you know, I know, uh, you know, sincere Bowers
had a touchdown and, and, you know, somebody of them
did well, uh, uh, Mario Easterly had an interception for
Old Dominion. So it's very gratifying to see the kids'
dreams come true.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
Yeah, it really is.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
I mean, Chase Regan, J.R. Rolison, these are some of
the guys that Rob highlighted for us that if we
got to see him on Saturday, it's kind of a
neat thing. And Saturday night you get to see Matty J.,
Matt Johnson, offensive coordinator now, and seems to be working
his way up the ladder. And I know he's got
a great football mind. And then Stone Saunders comes in
(02:55):
as a second string player. quarterback unfortunately gets hurt in
the very last play of the game.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
Yeah, that was the difficult part. But, yeah, I mean,
you're exactly right. You know, with Chase, James Madison, Jair
now went from Kent State to West Virginia. And then,
you know, to finish it up with, you know, watching Matt,
you know, it's just not the players as coach seeing
his dream and how hard he worked to get to
(03:19):
where he is. And I agree, you know, he's on,
you know, and I've had college coaches tell me he's
on a, You know, just a really rising career. And
then to, you know, see Stone get in a little
bit and unfortunately got the injury. But, you know, he's
a tough kid. He'll bounce back and, you know, he'll
be better than ever, you know, at some point.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
Let's get back to present day, Bishop McDevitt football and
talk a little bit about Friday night. You know, just overall,
what did you take away from that Friday night?
Speaker 2 (03:53):
You know, not a lot. I mean....
Speaker 3 (03:56):
They were struggling without their quarterback on offense, which the
defensive staff made a pretty good adjustment because obviously they
didn't throw the ball as much like they did in
the first game.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
They were more of a.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
Wildcat offense, so the defensive coach made a good adjustment.
I'm not happy... You know, the receivers played well. Sebastian
played well, especially under a lot more duress than I.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
Felt he should have had. You know, not happy on offense.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
You know, we didn't get the run game going until
late in the game, you know, when we just kind of,
you know, put a heavy personnel package in and, you know,
ran the ball.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
But, you know, we've got good running backs. We've got
to do a better job up front.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
And, you know, to go against a defensive line like
a defensive front like– Good counsel.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
With all those Division I kids, I thought we played
much better.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
As an offensive line and in the run game than
we did, you know, Friday night against East.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
And so it was disappointing.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
And, you know, I mean, there's some good 45-0 wins
and there's some 45-0 game. And I know some people
will question why Coach Wechter's upset. I mean, you know,
I told the team on Monday On Monday, we came
in Labor Day and had a quick practice because we
played college tonight. So I told him, I'm like, you know,
(05:25):
I let this go. You know, we had three big
wins at the beginning of the season in 2023. We
got sloppy, like we were sloppy Friday night. We got
sloppy for the rest of the year. Came back almost
hauling us into the district finals against Man Am Central
when we had 25 years total offense the first half.
And then came back and won, but, you know, And,
you know, I had the guys raise their hand. I mean,
(05:47):
there's only three guys that really, you know, actually two
that dressed, Sebastian and Jontae Quick. Landon Colbert was injured,
but he was on the sideline.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
But that was about it.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
I'm like, tell them what it felt like losing to
Dallas in the state semifinals and your season being over.
And that was a direct result of complacency. And I'll
take the blame for that. And we got a lot
of bad habits.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
We got sloppy.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
And to me, Friday night was a lot of bad habits,
and we got sloppy because we got complacent after a
big win against good counsel. And, you know, I've told
the players, and I've told myself, I've told the coaching staff,
I'm not going to, you know, and I've talked to
Nick Saban about this because it happened to him in
his first national championship at LSU. And I said, it's
not going to happen here at Bishop McDevitt anymore when
(06:35):
I'm head coach. And so I needed addressing issues, and
I wasn't pleased with our performance.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Yeah, personally, I noticed that.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
We kind of get spoiled here, but not a lot
of chunk plays. Just towards the end of the game,
get the 30-yard touchdown, but not a lot of chunk
plays throughout the rushing game.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
We had two in the passing game. Should have had
about five or six. We had guys wide open and
pass protection broke down. But yeah, very disappointed. We couldn't
get the run game going. But it's tough when you're
getting hit on the line of scrimmage. We didn't do
a good enough job with the offensive line. We didn't Obviously,
(07:15):
we didn't coach well enough last week, so we've got
to get the run game going.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
A little bit more.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
Yeah, I thought Sebastian did a really good job of
spreading the ball around when you talked a little bit
about that. But when you talk about not doing these things,
you see him get hit a couple of times when
he's releasing the ball. That's not a good thing because
one of those could result in an elbow or a
wrist if somebody comes down on that.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
Yeah, I've told the offensive line that this week. I'm like, listen,
he's taken way too many big hits in the pocket.
I mean, Sebastian can run the football and we really,
we were until we lost our backup quarterback, we were
going to run him more this year, but we can't.
But even when you run the football, you know you
can brace for a hit. The one, I mean, he
(08:04):
got hit when his back foot planted and he's throwing
the ball where we had Zayden Smith with nobody within
20 yards of him and we threw the ball five
yards out of bounds and When I looked at the
replay on the sideline, as he was throwing the ball,
he got hit right up underneath the chin. I told
our offensive line, it's not sustainable for him to take
the hits he's taken the first two weeks. We just
(08:25):
can't let that happen. But overall, as far as spreading
it around, it's not by design. It's Sebastian doing a
better job of reading, understanding our past concepts, and reading
the defense, and he's doing a real good job with it,
and hopefully it continues tonight.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
Mentioning Zayden Smith, he gets a catch right in front
of the bench, right there by the sideline, and he
went from zero to 60. That would have made any
60s muscle car proud. I mean, he just took off,
had one guy with a chance, and then just blew
by two other guys.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
Yeah, he beat the angle of the other two guys.
I mean, you know, it's hard to see, you know,
because he's 6'5. and 215 pounds is as fast as
he is, but he's fast. But he kind of reminds
me a little bit in that sense is when Vince
Beamer was here back in the early 2000s is Vince
was 6'3, and nobody really realized how fast Vince was because,
(09:28):
you know, and Zayden's the same thing. Zayden at Ohio
State and Penn State last year ran a sub 4.540,
but he sometimes doesn't look like a John Tay or
a Howard or, you know, the last few years, Jerome LaRue,
because he takes that long stride.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
But those long strides, you don't realize.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
It doesn't look like he's going fast, but he's eating
up a lot of ground in the strides. And, you know,
I was glad to see him get that, and I
think you're going to see a lot more of him
the next, you know, the year, really.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
Let's talk a little bit about how the defense graded out.
When you think of defense tonight, they could be the
important 11 on the field.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
Yeah, I mean, the defense graded out okay. I mean,
there were a lot of mistakes there also. Again, I
just think it was a lack, and we got complacent.
The whole team got complacent. So, you know, I'm hoping
for a better performance on both sides of the ball tonight.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
State College coming in, always a great game. You know,
one that I look forward to, like those Cedar Cliff
games and the Harrisburg games and everything. State College, what
are they bringing in here that's really going to test
you guys tonight?
Speaker 3 (10:45):
They've got a big offensive line. They've got two good
running backs. They've got a couple good receivers. The one
kid played and hurt us a little bit last year,
the one receiver. He's a freshman. He's a sophomore now.
He's got a bunch of Division I offers. I like
their quarterback. The quarterback is dangerous. He throws very well,
throws well on the run, but he can run. He
can pull the ball down and run, and they do
some design quarterback runs for him. But probably the best
(11:11):
part of their offense is their offensive line. They have
a lot of kids back from last year on that
offensive line.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
They're big. They move well.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
Defensively, they give you so many looks, and they give
us an out front, which we have not faced yet
this year in a scrimmage of the first two games.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
When you face an out front, you've got to change the.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
Way you do things, especially in blocking schemes and pass
pro and run games.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
We've had to change some things. We've worked on it
a little bit.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
During camp and a little bit during OTAs, but it's
nothing like preparing for a game.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
And they do a lot off of it.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
I've seen, I think since 2024, I've seen them run
some things you just don't see in high school coverage-wise.
Sometimes I've seen them run some things I really only
see in NFL. Now, we've been fortunate, especially in 2024,
It doesn't matter what coverage they ran.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
We had an answer for it.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
But, you know, we've got a mix of receivers that,
you know, where, you know, Jontae, you know, it seems
like he's been here forever since he's played. And it's
really kind of Howard Holton because they both played a
lot as freshmen. You know, so they've got experience, whereas Aiden,
he has experience playing receiver, but not in our system.
(12:35):
You know, same thing with Thatcher, Ansley, is they don't
have experience in our offense. So there is, you know,
because there's some things the receiver's got to identify in coverage, too.
And then last year, you know, with Spatula being a
first-year player, we ran the ball extremely well against them,
(12:55):
and that opened up the play action.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
So we've got to be able to run the ball
some this week.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
But, you know, in the same token is, I mean,
we've got some guys that can run and run routes
very well, and, you know, quarterback is playing really well.
just need to protect him better. And, you know, so
if we do that, I think we're going to do
very well offensively.
Speaker 1 (13:17):
So we'll kind of keep an eye on you take
what they give you tonight, right?
Speaker 2 (13:22):
And then Sebastian running the offense.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
Yeah, I mean, you know, again, with what they do defensively,
you just kind of got to kind of get a
feel with, as Nick Shiner always said, you know, be prepared, but,
you know, see what they're doing and then just go
off of that. And that's what Because, you know, don't
jump into a four-man front now. I mean, being an odd,
(13:45):
they give you a lot of different looks. Number one,
who was all-league safety last year, they moved him down.
He's kind of like a hybrid outside linebacker safety. I mean,
he'll line up at outside linebacker, but sometimes they're going
to invert him back. And, you know, it's not easy
for high school pass offense to see some of that.
But plus, he's very good at blitzing. You know, he
(14:07):
comes off that edge very well.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
So... We're all in our hands full tonight, but if
we play well, we should be right in it.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
You're smiling a lot because I know these are the
kind of games you look forward to coaching. I know
you worry about it all week, but I know you're
anxious to get out there and have the kids test
their mettle tonight.
Speaker 3 (14:26):
These are the fun games because you get challenged. As
a head coach, I'm challenged, but as an offensive play caller,
I'm challenged because they've got a very good defense line personnel,
but they've got a very good system.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
And are very well coached. All around, they're very well coached.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
I felt that Good Counsel was very well coached.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
Those are the games you get excited about. Here's the thing.
Speaker 3 (14:50):
It's so early in the season. We're going to be
a lot better team if we stay healthy six, seven
weeks from now than we are now. We're going to
go out tonight, give it our best, and if we win, great.
We need to learn how to get ready for next
week if we win. If we lose, we'll correct our mistakes.
(15:14):
I know this. We've got four or five freshmen that
are getting varsity playing time. By the time we get
to week 7, 8, 9, 10, they're going to be
a lot better football players. Some of our guys have
either not been in the system but learned the system
a little bit more. We have some guys that are
(15:36):
making contributions who haven't played a lot of varsity football.
You know, maybe they played JV in the past. They're
going to get better. And, you know, so, you know,
I like to play a tough game like this earlier
in the year because it shows you what you need
to get better at and where you're at.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
Appreciate your time as always, Coach. Best to you tonight.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
All right. Thanks a lot, Martin.
