Speaker 1 (00:00):
At Arcos Country. Tonight's Short Show edition.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
Is the CU Bus taking on the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Speaker 1 (00:05):
Here we got all your.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Coverage right here at KOA starting at the bottom of
the hour at six thirty. The nine and six CU
Bus taking on the ten and five Cincinnati Bearcats in
Big twelve action. The Bearcats favored by three and a
half in that one. Both teams I believe, have lost

(00:26):
four in a row stumbling into this matchup, so it'll
be a get right gate for somebody hoping that it
will be see you.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
Yeah, the Big twelve little different than the Pac twelve
of old further a little bit when it comes.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
To when it comes to that, and it's just kind
of funny to you know, to sort of see the
struggle as it's not funny, but it is. It's interesting
sort of see the struggle as you get acclimated and
adjusted to a different conference, different styles of play, that
kind of thing. One thing I will say about to
See You that's that's jumped out at me so far
this year is they've really struggled to rebound the basketball effectively,

(00:59):
and that's that's going to be a problem, especially a
Big twelve play.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
You can't rebound.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
You you can't get second chance opportunities in that league.
You're you're really going to uh, you're really going to struggle.
Theyve been all right, shooting the three ball about thirty
five percent on a little over thirty five percent on
the season, but again, when you're only when you're only
pulling down what is it, thirty three to thirty four rebounds.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
Yeah, to be fair, I mean they lost a lot
of key components from last year's uh, you know run
in the NCAA Tournament.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
They lost really good players.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
So that's it's kind of a rebuild year and you're
going into the best conference in college basketball. So there's
going to be some stumbles along the way, and like
you said, hopefully they can get right again.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Cincinnati tonight. Yep. Mark Johnson on the call tonight.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
I believe so. And man, there's nothing better than Mark
Johnson on.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
A right between the years. Well, I mean on the radio,
it's right between the years. Oh yeah, I see why
you did that. Always always love here, Mark Johnson on
the call. So that'll be good. I had a little
bit talked a little bit about Sean Payton the end
of the year address of the team obviously George Payton, uh,
Greg Petter out there talking about stuff.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
I got a lot of.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Questions today about the uniform that Greg Penner did not like,
the combination you didn't like.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
I happened to know.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
I reached out and I happened to know what uniform
combination you didn't Well.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
Let us, let us and the listeners know.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
It was the blue socks with the orange pants with
the blue top. I agree that was my least favorite
as well. That was just about everybody's least favorite. It
looked like what did I what I'm trying to remember
what I call it? The boise or not boisy? I
can't remember what it looked good? What I what I
call it at the time, Illinois uniform combination.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
That's that's what I called it. And it was. Yeah,
I was not one of my favorites either.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
But for those of you who wanted to know the
uniform combination that, uh, that Rob Walton and Greg Petter
did not like, it was the blue socks with the
orange pants with the blue jersey on top.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
Well, since this is fashion country tonight, now I want
to know which was your favorite, because obviously, for me
and a lot of fans the throwback uniforms are the favorites,
but apparently there's a league role that you can only
wear them so many times in a year.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
Twice.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Yeah, uh, and that is that is the My my
favorite is one that I think most people aren't going
to like. And mine was the all the uh the
white helmet with the white top.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
With the orange pants. Yeah, that's a sharp look. I
liked that look. I liked that one a lot.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Most people that uh that I've talked to liked the
orange pants with the white top with the blue helmet.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
But I liked the old white with the orange pants. Personally.
I thought it was a little cleaner look.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
Yeah, and I thought I was gonna really like the.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
All white combo, you know, white helmet. It was the
white pants. It was too much.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Yeah, yeah, the the snow out or whatever. I yeah,
that was, uh, that was a little bit too much.
So and I you know, I'm not the huge I'm
not the biggest fan of these uniforms or whatever.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
I know a lot of people love them, you love
them or hate them. I do love the retro once.
I thought those were great. They looked great.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
The only thing about the retro uniforms was when we
debuted them against the Raiders and I was talking to
you know, Nick Downer on the sideline and Steve Atwater
and they're talking and I wason, man, the better win
these though, because if you lose in these uniforms, we
will never see them again. And then we got down
ten nothing to the Raiders and they're driving before Sir

(04:09):
Tan houses that the house six six man?

Speaker 1 (04:13):
That was that?

Speaker 2 (04:13):
That PI sixs you turn around the Broncos season on
multiple levels. First of all, it's saved. It's saved the
retro uniforms. Yeah, it's the retro uniforms, which you know who.
But it turned like the season felt like the season
momentum turned around at that point.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
It was the Broncos just started.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
Building at that point and it felt like season momentum
happened right then. And there five six, six nine zeros
the text on like I said, short show, got a
little bit of time to get you guys questions before
we get out of here.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
Uh, post game, we're.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Gonna have some more Broncos country and iamb Zach Segers
at a rod on that. So you guys, we'll stay
tuned and uh and listen to that after the game.
I always appreciate those guys. Uh, those guys filling in
had a fun time filling in on the KWAI Sports
shows afternoon, Brian Edwards and Dave Logan looking forward to
to getting out of here. Uh uh, hearing about the

(05:00):
twenty minutes. Now as far as the Broncos go, where
we're starting to pivot forward to looking at next season?

Speaker 1 (05:06):
What is it that the Broncos need?

Speaker 2 (05:07):
What is it that the team looks at as needs.
Because the conversations that I've had, it appears to me
that the fan base has a little bit of a
different idea of what it is that this team needs
relative to what the team feels like it needs.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
Maybe that changes, maybe you know, maybe it doesn't.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
But the fan base is clamoring for wide receivers, including
re signing Courtland Sutton to a to a premier deal
or or are pursuing a T.

Speaker 1 (05:41):
Higgins. And I'm not necessarily opposed to that, but I just.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
Don't believe that that's I don't believe that's the direction
that they're looking at. I think, you know, maybe you
re up Courtland Sutton, but I mean, I don't are
you re up in Courtland Sutton? For twenty four twenty
eight million per year by four years, because that's what
it's going to take. That's what he'll make on the
market if he wants to, and he would have to

(06:07):
take a hometown a severe hometown discount.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
As far as as far as that goes, I don't
I don't know that.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
When you look at that, and when you look at
the way that Sean.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
Payton has constructed his offense before, I'm not sure that
that's the direction that necessarily they go. Versus fans talking about,
you know, building a Super Madden team or whatever by
reupp and court and adding T Higgins and all that
kind of stuff. I don't even know that there's going
to be a T Higgins pursuit. We'll see, you know,
kind of how that goes. I do believe that the

(06:40):
team has prioritized the tight end position. I do believe
that they will make it a priority because if you
look again at the way Sean Payton's offense has been constructed,
that's most successful when you have someone at that position
that can clear things out for everybody else.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
That's what makes the offense go. And if you go
back and.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
You look Sean Payton has had four all pro seasons
out of three different tight ends over the course of
his career.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
That is incredibly noteworthy. That is incredibly noteworthy.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
And it goes to show that the way that the
offense is set up is to pepper the tight end
with with targets that it free issuld free everybody else up.
You go back and you look at statistically how the
offenses work out. For Sean Payton offenses is typically the
X receiver, the running back, and the tight end or
are the three big lion's share of the pass catchers,

(07:32):
and you'll you'll see the backside, you know, you'll see
the Z receiver, you know, get some big, big bomb type.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
Plays and that kind of stuff.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
But the reality is the statistical aggregators or the Marcus
colst to the Mike Thomas playing the X receiver on
the slant, the tight end clearing things out, and then
the running back on those choice routes, and those typically
are the big things. So when you look at this thing,
von Valet can play that receiver, he can be that

(08:00):
kind of receiver.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
Seems like he's built for it, right he is.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
He's not an old world guy or any of that
kind of stuff. But he's got a big enough body,
he's a long strider, and he goes how to use
the body to box out and he's a sure handed receiver.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
Game against Buffalo, Nott was standing, Oh well, that wasn't
a great game for anyone.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
We had some drops that were like, yeah, I've never
seen him drop a ball like that.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
Yeah it was. There was quite a few drops in
that game.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
I'm not gonna you know, but by and large, Vla
was very sure handed over.

Speaker 1 (08:28):
In fact, he was the most efficient receiver for.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
The Broncos in terms of catches for target.

Speaker 1 (08:34):
Out there.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
So I don't I don't know that that I'm.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
Too worried about the receiving corps.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
For me, You've got to find a playmaking tight end
that loosens things up and it scares defense. Is enough,
not not a troutman or an Adkins or whatever that
that actually puts puts fear into defenses.

Speaker 3 (08:53):
Well, I mean, this seems like a pretty good draft
class or tight ends.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
Am I wrong? No? It does. And that's the thing.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
I mean, a lot of the mock drafters are putting
putting Tyler Warren in there for the Broncos, and maybe
I don't think he's gonna be.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
There at twenty.

Speaker 3 (09:05):
That's what I was just gonna this, is he gonna
fall to twenty, especially after the production we saw from
someone like Brock Bowers this year in the Nbris he
had and he went at what twelve thirteen.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
I just I mean, we'll see, we'll see. It's it's
still early in the process.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
And you know, the two names that you get most
associated with the Broncos right now, or Tyler Warren, Ashton Chanty,
and I don't think either one of those guys are
even going.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
To be remotely there at twenty when they when they're drafting.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
This is a very poor draft class in terms of
upper upper tier talent, right Like the guys that use
are surefire first round it's a blue chip or a
purple or whatever.

Speaker 1 (09:36):
You know.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
However, whatever your grading system is, the color system, whatever
you use, Like there's like twelve thirteen guys in this class.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
What about a guy like the tight end from Texas
gutter Helm and on a Day two pick.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
Well, there's an obvious connection there.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
He of course played his high school ball here for
for coach Dave Logan. So you know, maybe I think
you're probably looking at an early day three pick there
for him, maybe a late day two guy, early day
three guy, but that might be one.

Speaker 1 (10:04):
I think there's some other names to kind of keep
your eye on, you know.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
I've mentioned a few times a Ronda gazd in the
second out of Syracuse.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
I think he kind of.

Speaker 2 (10:14):
Fits the mold of what it is that Sean Payton
typically likes out of that position in terms of a
body archetype.

Speaker 3 (10:20):
And for people who didn't watch Syracuse at all this year,
which I wouldn't blame him for, they had a great
offense and he was a huge part of it.

Speaker 1 (10:28):
Yeah, he was. He was a phenomenal player there. Obviously
his dad was.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
I think most people remember his receiver or Ronnie Gadsden,
and played for.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
Miami for a number of years.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
So I think that or I hope that, Excuse me,
I hope that that people who know that they may
not know who he is because not a lot of
people here really watched a lot of Syracuse football. I
don't I don't blame him, you know, I mean, how

(11:07):
often are you you watching a Syracuse football game. I
think most people's primary exposure to Syracuse football probably came
from their bowl game.

Speaker 1 (11:16):
Syracuse Cors went nine to three this year playing in
the ACC.

Speaker 3 (11:21):
Just sticking on Syracuse for a second, and this has
nothing to do with the Broncos, but Kyle McCord, their
quarterback that transferred from Ohio State.

Speaker 1 (11:29):
What are his draft prospects get drafted? You know, probably
a Day three pick in some particular. There's the tools
aren't all there.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
He's a smart guy, but maybe a little tools limited
the NFL level. He threw for what forty three hundred
yards and twenty nine touchdowns this year. The big stars
for me on that Syracuse team or leaquent Allen, who's
the running back there. He he ran for fourteen touchdowns
and then again like they got a couple of receivers
that are all right in Jackson Meekson and Treybill Paanea,

(11:59):
but Aronni Gasten is set and at the tight end position.

Speaker 1 (12:01):
Sixty eight catches, eight hundred and forty eight yards.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
Five touchdowns, average twelve point five per reception, seventy one
yards a game. And it wasn't like that was all
it was on big you know, his longest play was
thirty nine yards. It wasn't, you know, like he was
sitting there racking up seventy yard catches or whatever to
inflate the totals. I just I love his athleticism. He's
not he's not as as stiff hiped as some of

(12:23):
these other guys are. He's you know, he's sixty five
two thirty six, maybe a little bit underweight for what
you'd want relatively speaking. But you know, we had Dulcage
in here, so I don't think that necessarily that that's
too big, too big a problem.

Speaker 1 (12:36):
I see. I see Ryan Edwards has wandered back.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
Into the studio, does not want to be acknowledged. He
do nothing to see here, nothing to see here. We
can give you the John Cena facially, you know.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
Like we got a text here on the text side
at five six sixth I know, Cam scattaboo, that's not
I feel like he's such a great college story. But
I don't know how he translates to the NFL either.

Speaker 2 (12:57):
I'm not I don't look at him as as an
up to your NFL prospects.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
He's his first step is slow.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
He got by by, you know, by out out strengthened
guys at the at the collegiate level, and good for him.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
It's a great, you know, kind of a college story.

Speaker 2 (13:12):
But I'm not sure there's anything that separates him from
for instance, like remember Carson Steele, the Chiefs kind of
half back.

Speaker 1 (13:18):
Full back guy.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
I mean, unless you're drafted, scat Abo would be a fullback.
I don't really in an undersized fullback at that.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
Well, we were talking about how Sean Payton kind of
has redefined the joker role.

Speaker 2 (13:31):
I mean, you know, and and if you could get
the catches out of him, maybe, you know, maybe he
could be that. But I Scatabo, I mean that that
first step is slow for running back. I mean, he's
he's just kind of there's a lot of people like
he's Mike Alstott. Like, No, mikeel Stott was quicker, faster
and much bigger, much bigger, you know. I mean, if anything,
he's like a very very poor man's Peyton hillis.

Speaker 3 (13:53):
Yeah, I think that's a good comp still smaller, way smaller.

Speaker 1 (13:56):
Yeah, and and yes, and significally small.

Speaker 2 (13:58):
And probably not if Peyton Hillis had wide receiver type hands,
I do catch anything. Yeah, I'm not sure Scatibo is
as good a receiver as Peyton hillis was.

Speaker 1 (14:08):
You know what all said, and does I camp Scatibo
is probably not.

Speaker 2 (14:11):
I mean, that's a great college story, but I don't
think that that's I don't think that's a guy that's
gonna do much in the pro In the pro gay,
I if I had to compare him to somebody, I
mean maybe Toby Gerhart kind of yeah, out of Stanford
at this that's probably probably the best comparison I can
think of at the moment. The guy was productive in college,
but probably is a limited rotational type guy in the pros.

(14:31):
As far as running backs, they fit what Sean Payton likes.
I Omarion Hampton, it's got the right body type. I
mean you're looking for You're looking for somebody between two
hundred and fifteen and two hundred and twenty five pounds
you can catch well out of the backfield and runs
with authority.

Speaker 1 (14:50):
I mean it's if you feel, you know, he either
likes either likes his backs to.

Speaker 2 (14:55):
Be very fast, undersized spinner type guys, which we already
have with mcglaw flynn. We saw, you know, we saw
him draft some of those guys over the years in
New Orleans or battering guys that are much much bigger,
get prototypical size for Sean Payton running back is what
five ten to six foot in somewhere between two und

(15:16):
fifteen two undred and twenty five pounds usually on the Yeah,
mark Ingram Pierre Thomas, Latavius Murray was even bigger than that,
like six three, But you know those kind of guys,
and so you guys like Kim Johnson and Iowa or
Marion Hampton that kind of fit that Moldhampton I think
is the better receiver of the two. And I think
he's probably the second running back drafted, but he might

(15:36):
be a guy at last well into the second round,
so you might be able to you might that might
be a guy that you might be able to get
a little bit later, whereas a Janty you're you're probably
not even going to be in lined again him, like
just just being realistic.

Speaker 3 (15:49):
Yeah, after the season he had someone's going to take
a fire on I think late probably between eight and twelve.

Speaker 2 (15:56):
Yeah, And I think that the thinking on drafting running
backs has flipped a little bit because it didn't make
much sense to me. I understand the evaluation of running
backs in terms of a second contract and not wanting
to pay those guys, but it doesn't make much sense
to me not to draft them high because you have
a cost controlled asset for an especially in the first round,

(16:18):
with a fifth year option right, and then a franchise
time so you can get almost And I hate to
put it this way because it sucks for the player,
but from an organizational perspective, six years of control is
a lifetime for a running back, probably their entire serviceable career,
outside of those one to one hundred guys that aren't.
So you know, for me, I would consider drafting running back.

(16:40):
A lot of people you know they own drive. Draft
a running back early. If he's got that kind of talent,
Take him early. He's game changing talent. You got four
years minimum of cost control on him, a fifth year option,
and then a franchise tag after that, where it starts
to get a little expensive, but at least you're not
tied long term to it.

Speaker 1 (16:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (16:55):
I know Broncos fans aren't going to like this, but
what do you think about going defail with that twentieth pick.
I mean someone like the safety out of Georgia Malachai Starks.
I mean a guy on the interior, a big defensive line.

Speaker 1 (17:08):
The Michigan tackles.

Speaker 2 (17:09):
If one of those guys is there, I think you
have to consider it. I think the Broncos have three
defensive positions they really need to address this offseason.

Speaker 1 (17:18):
You've got to upgrade PJ. Lock at the free safety.

Speaker 2 (17:21):
You've got to add some depth and some athleticism to
the interior linebacking corps, and then you've got to find
a nose tackle because I don't think you're bringing DJ
Jones back at the number that that he would cost.

Speaker 1 (17:32):
And he filled it abruptly, but you know, he's a little.

Speaker 2 (17:36):
Undersized, believe it or not for that that role and
not really.

Speaker 3 (17:39):
It's just so crazy to think guy's like a normal sized,
massive human being.

Speaker 2 (17:43):
He's still yeah, but he's just not really. I mean,
he's more of a three tech that he is a zero.
And that's he's it. You know, I don't I like
DJ Jones a lot as a ballplayer, but I you know,
I don't know that for what it would cost to
bring him back, I don't know why you wouldn't go
to the draft and get a cost controlled option and
then role with Malcolm Roach who played very well, uh

(18:06):
and and and a rookie that you're trying to bring
up and have cost control options on.

Speaker 1 (18:10):
So you know there's there's options there.

Speaker 2 (18:12):
But I think those three positions on the defensive side
or things you got have to dress on the offensive side.

Speaker 1 (18:16):
I think everybody knows. Uh.

Speaker 2 (18:17):
I know the Fans won a wide receiver, but again,
I really think tight end is more the priority and
I could absolutely see them double dipping. You got a
free agency, Go get Jawan Johnson, my guy, Sean Payton's
very familiar with us some time in New Orleans. You
turn around and add a rookie on top of that,
add some dynamic playmakers there. They're able to clear things
out and space things out for the receiving corps. All

(18:38):
of a sudden you'll see things pick up for the receivers.
Sean Payton has never been a guy that has heavily
invested money in receivers, unless it was keeping his own,
you know, paying a Mike Thomas.

Speaker 1 (18:50):
Or a Marcus Colston or whatever that they home grew.

Speaker 2 (18:55):
We've got Cuos basketball cut up, next tier, taking of
the Cincinnati barric Yeah, it's Mark Johnson gonna be here
on the call.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
Appreciate you guys listening.

Speaker 2 (19:03):
More Broncos Country tonight after the game, right here, Tom
