Speaker 1 (00:00):
Benjamin all Bright alongside Nick wet blanket Ferguson as a
seven to one nine.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Put it on the ka Common spiral text.
Speaker 3 (00:06):
Line, Wait, don't put that on me, man, I didn't
say it.
Speaker 4 (00:12):
You read it, but you were happy to read it, though.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
I was happy to yes, Zach seekers behind the glass.
We're going to head out to the ka Common Spirit
Health hotline and bring on Nick Cosmeider from the Athletic
covering the Denver Broncos formerly covered the Denver Nuggets as
well the twenty twenty three Colorado Sports Writer of the Year.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Nick, How are you tonight, man?
Speaker 5 (00:33):
I'm great. I would never describe Nick though as as
a wet blanket man. Dude's always got a smile too.
I'm with you, Nick. I don't know where that comes from,
my guy.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
Hey, it wasn't me who said it, Nick, it was
it was the seven to one nine on the text line.
I'm just I'm just the what do they say, don't
don't kill the messenger.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
I may not kill you. I may throw something at
you though.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Nick, you were out at the NFL owners meetings. I
want to know before we get to the Broncos, what
was your biggest takeaway.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
For the NFL as.
Speaker 5 (01:01):
A whole, well, you know it, you know, kind of
talking to some fellow reporters and some you know, coaches
and things like that, this meeting bian large did not
have a lot of the same you know juice that
maybe the last few years did, when you were talking
about things like you know, getting the dynamic kickoffs first
instituted and then readjusted and changed and subsequent years. And
(01:23):
of course last year you had a lot of discussion
about the twist blush, which has dominated some conversation at
the league meetings for a few years as well. So
this this year didn't really have that same effect. But
I would say the one thing that really kind of
is something to watch for for NFL fans is, you know,
I got this sense coming out of there that this
this thing with the NFL Referees Association, it's not in
(01:48):
any way like near a finish line. Like obviously when
you have negotiations between two parties, like it doesn't sometimes
feel like it's going to get done until all of
a sudden it does. And so there's obviously still time
for these two sides to come together. But the NFL says, hey,
we're going to start training replacement referees in the in
(02:08):
the event that they cannot come to an agreement with
the ref association. So you know that that's something to watch.
The two sides, at least from from what I gathered
while being out there in Arizona, seemed to be relatively
far apart right now.
Speaker 6 (02:23):
Well, the one thing, one place area that the Broncos
don't seem to be far apart is the movement of
Jonah Ellis. And I know that has been a huge
topic of conversation and different people have their different opinions
as far as whether this move is the best thing
for the Broncos and for Jonah Ellis. And I know
you had an opportunity to digest and process the situation.
(02:46):
What are your thoughts on the move of Jonah Ellis
to the inside back of position.
Speaker 5 (02:52):
Yeah, no, it's good. Actually, I have something coming out
tomorrow about this, and I think it's interesting in that
it kind of pulls a lot of different level is
when you're talking about questions with the roster, and one
of them, I think the big thing to look at
is they really really like what ke Robinson did last year,
largely behind the scenes. Of course, he you know, only
(03:13):
played in a handful of games, but you looked at
that AFC Championship game and he just he had a
really impressive performance with the limited snaps that he had,
I would say, outside of Jared Stidham's you know, big
beetball bomb early in the game to Marvin MIM's, Denver's
probably top highlight in the game might have been you know,
Kee Robinson chasing down Drake May from behind and pulling
(03:35):
them down for a sack. And those are sort of
the things that they saw a lot in practice. So again,
I think this idea that you have five pass rushers,
you really like, that's a difficult thing to do. Like,
you you have a basically four of those guys you
can get up any given week, and certainly you want
to guard yourself against injuries. But you know, I think
just looking at the composition of the roster where they're at,
(03:57):
not only do you get Ke Robinson more involved, but
let's face it, the Broncos don't really have a lot
of depth right now at inside linebacker behind Alex Singleton
and Justine Sirnad. When you're talking about proven commodities, they
have Drew Sanders on the roster going into the last
year of his rookie contract, but he's been injured a
ton since being a third round pick there in twenty
twenty three, so hard to really know what you're going
(04:18):
to get out of him. Obviously, you have a couple
other young guys like Jordan Turner, Karine Reed, Lavelle Bailey
who have all had a little bit of experience, but
by and large, I think anything behind those two veterans
is wide open, and so to me, that's another reason
it makes sense to get a look at And again,
they did not say that Jonah Ellis is one percent
like he's moving there without a doubt, but I think
(04:40):
that's really kind of their hope. That's where they're going
to start at this offseason, and if it goes well
for him in terms of digesting the roles in the
defense from that position in Joseph advanced Joseph's defense, I
think it can become and will become a permanent move.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
Talking with Nick Cosmeider on Broncos Country tonight, we'll have
to keep an eye out for that piece tomorrow on
Jonah Ellis, possibly get some snaps at the inside linebacker position.
You can find all of his great work on the
athletic We've been playing a lot of sound from George
Peyton and Sean Payton from the NFL owners meetings, but
we haven't played any of this Demanti Leach audio and
(05:14):
I know you talked to him or at least heard
him talk about the team not being contacted about playing
in an international game as a road team. So does
that mean the Broncos are not going to play in
an international game this year or will it be a
home game that they'll be playing internationally?
Speaker 5 (05:28):
Well, they won't be playing in a home game. They're
opportunity to do that, I believe comes next year. Don't
quote me on that, but I think that's the rotation
for them that they would be available to do that.
Every team has to, I believe it's every eight years
hosts a game. But that is of course going to
change if and when the league gets to a point
(05:50):
where they just have either more international games or get
to a situation where every team is going to play
an international game every year. But for right now, it's
a situation where they don't have a home game scheduled overseas,
and right now that the list of opponents that they
could be the road opponent for is dwindling down. A
lot of people thought that the forty nine ers, who
(06:12):
are hosting a game in Mexico City, would be a
viable opponent for the Broncos. They have not heard anything
about that. And I saw a clip of Kyle Shanahan
talking at the NFL League meetings, I believe, on a
podcast saying we want to try to request the Rams
for that game because they requested us to travel all
the way to Australia to play them for their home
(06:33):
international game, and so you know that. I think who
knows whether the league will actually do that. It'd be
interesting to have a divisional rivalry ree where neither of
the team's played at home in a given year. But
to me, I would say, right now, it doesn't look
super likely to me that the Broncos are going to
have an international game in twenty twenty six.
Speaker 6 (06:53):
Well, nig, it seems that there's a certain word, when
mentioned here in Broncos country, has a dirty, negative connotation,
And what I'm talking about is the phrase of running
it back.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
And how would you look at or how.
Speaker 6 (07:07):
Would you quantify how the team should be viewed based
on some of the moves that we're made, We're not
made because of that so called dirty word. I mean,
it seems though we're gonna have to speak of it
as Lord Voldemore that the name that shall not be mentioned.
Speaker 4 (07:25):
So what would you call it?
Speaker 5 (07:26):
Yeah, certainly, certainly Sean Payton wants nothing to do with
that phrase. And that's not I think that's not unique
to the Broncos. You know, Mike McDonald when he took
to a table of reporters on Monday at the league meetings,
he kind of said the same thing, that we're not
running it back, we're not defending our title, Like this
is a completely new year. And while we have a
(07:48):
lot of the same roster, like we it's a completely
new year. And I think that was Sean Payton's point,
like even if they had not ultimately made the trade
for Jalen Waddell and thus had almost at same team
that they had a year ago, minus whoever's going to
come in in the draft, that he still want to
view it as running back. They've they've changed some coaches around,
(08:09):
They've they're going to have a new play caller. There's
always enough change and not only that, but the challenge
is different they're going to be playing a first play
schedule as the winners of the AFC West. The challenge
in the regular season is going to be more intense.
There's no sneaking up on anybody. So I think the
way that he views it is they ultimately went into
free agency, or at least they went into the end
(08:29):
of last season. It wasn't this idea that, like the
season ends and because they were the number one seed
and were maybe a bow Nick's injury away from being
in the Super Bowl, that they were just going to
bring everybody back. It just ultimately played out that way.
That's what George Payton said to us on Monday, was that,
like we go and we start measuring the position of need,
like we take all of our own guys off the board,
(08:51):
and then we measure them up against whoever is going
to be a free agent at to give him position,
and certainly the continuity to those guys being there already
like played into the value. But I think by and large,
the Broncos just really felt like the guys that they
had at most of these positions. You know, George said,
we favored those in most cases, and certainly at the
(09:11):
you know, kind of the price they were able to get.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Some of them as well.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
Talking with Nick Cosmier covers the Broncos for The Athletic.
You can find him on x or Twitter, whatever you
want to call it at Nick Cosmior. What did you
make of the Pro Football Talk report of Aaron Rodgers
possibly coming to a visit with the Broncos And how
bad of an idea would be this be for the
Denver Broncos organization.
Speaker 5 (09:34):
It's almost like so lappable as to to you know,
only be entertained in the kind of joking manner that
it deserves, because I mean there's just a million reasons
that it makes zero sense whatsoever. And the cheap among
them is the Broncos, you know, love Bo Nicks, and
he is he's going to be their quarterback. Like you know,
obviously he's still in his rookie contract. It's a big
(09:56):
season for him in terms of like showing like you know,
without any without any shred of doubt, that he is
continuing to ascend and is going to be that franchise
quarterback for a long period of time. But the other
part is Aaron Rodgers is just you know, I thought
he played well at times for Pittsburgh last year. But
you're talking, you know, about a guy who's at the
(10:17):
very end of his career, and you know, to say
nothing of the fact that he and Sean Payton, if
we all remember, in the summer of twenty twenty three,
really didn't have nice things to say about each other
when Sean Payton had made the comments he did about
Nathaniel Hackett's coaching job the year prior. They went back
and forth, and so yeah, there's just to me a
million reasons. And if I'm Pittsburgh, I'm just you know,
(10:38):
how long do you do you wait for this? I
think it's kind of he promised a quick resolution. Obviously
that's not what they're seeing. And it makes me makes
me wonder if they already know behind the scenes. But
you know, it'd be tough to already be in this
position and not really knowing what your quarterback situation is.
Speaker 6 (10:54):
Thig, I know you've covered this team in his game
for a long period of time and before you joined us.
Brand and I and the young Seekers we're having this
conversation and I asked them, what would you be willing
to give up a sacrifice, not just to be able
to run out of the tunne with the Broncos stadium
have your name call, but catch you're a touchdown in
(11:15):
the pivotal game, and that pivotal game being the game
that prepares the Broncos to the Super Bowl. What would
you be willing to give up a sacrifice to experience that?
Speaker 5 (11:25):
Man, that's a good question, because I'll tell you. I'm
I'm running the Colfax Marathon in May and one of
the things that you that you one of the places
you run during that marathon is you go through in
power Field, And so I've been thinking about that moment
quite a lot actually, of like it's kind of funny.
You're there, you cover these games, you watch that happen,
(11:46):
and so to then be on the other end of it,
I mean, I think I'll be more concentrated on just
like making sure that I can still breathe and the
amount of water and all those other kind of stuff
make sure. But yeah, that's that's a great question, and
I might have a greater appreciation for it after I
finished that, But you know, you'd have to tell me, Nick.
(12:06):
I think that that is one thing I really do
like to watch those when they come through because for
certain guys you can tell that it never gets old.
It's never something that is taken for granted that you're
running out there with seventy thousand people screaming at the
top of their lungs. You're you know, you're you watch
the way a guy like Quinn Minors does it, and
you know kind of has his his wwetro intro or whatever.
(12:30):
I can only imagine just just sort of the adrenaline
that comes with something like that. So after if I
can make it through there alive.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
Look at you covering the Broncos running the Colefax Marathon.
You used to cover the Denver Nuggets. This is the
final question we got for you, Nick. How are you
feeling about them? They got a good win last night
in Utah when they should have won, and they did handily.
After it looked a little iffy there at the beginning,
but Jamal Murray looks like he's playing the best basketball
of his career.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
How are you feeling about them going into the playoffs?
Speaker 5 (13:00):
Well, you just kind of touched on what I was
going to say. I think this is obviously the eighth
year in a row that the Supertoes. See You've got
me doing that. But the Nuggets are making the playoffs right,
eight years in a row, and that's that's certainly nothing
to sneeze at. But I don't know that they've come
into it with to your point, Jamal Murray playing this way,
and he has had some epic postseasons. We all know
(13:23):
what he did in the bubble, we all know what
he did during the actual championship run there in May
and June of twenty twenty three. But I am just
really eager to watch what he looks like because of
the way that he's playing right now. And then the
other part of it is obviously I think they are
getting more fresh and the bottom line through all this,
and then part of the reason Michael Malone got let
(13:44):
go was because it was this idea that there was
there was a sacrifice, the sacrifice for the night to
night victories, right like the win it all costs during
the regular season. You know, that might be oversimplifying it,
but that's sort of what the narrative outside view of
the struggle internally that that team had. Well it maybe not,
it might not have been by choice, but going into
(14:05):
the playoff now you have a lot of guys who
have not played necessarily the full load of basketball that
they have in previous year. So I'm eager to see
whether they are fresher than we have seen them when
they have faded out late in the postseason, ie at
home in a Game seven against the Timberwolves, or even
last year in Game seven in Oklahoma City.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
It's an exciting time to be a Denver sports fan.
Speaker 6 (14:26):
Nick.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
We appreciate your time as always. Man, have a great rest.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
Of your night.
Speaker 5 (14:30):
Thanks one, guys, take care.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
Nick Cosmider at the Athletic covering the Denver Broncos, and
you can find all his work on social media.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
At Nick Cosmider with a K.
Speaker 1 (14:41):
Going back to our conversation about what people would give
up to score that touchdown from the three to zero three, I.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
Would give up listening to BCT. Just kidding.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
I would quit listening to Michael Brown if I could
get a chance to score in the NFL. I'd say,
that's a good compromise. Don't give up BCT, but you
can give up Michael Brown. He's got enough. What's he call.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
Him, gooney or goobers or something. Goobers.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
Yeah, seekers gave me the thumbs up from behind the gloves,
That's what he calls his listeners goobers, goobers.
Speaker 2 (15:08):
Yeah, I would.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
I would consider Michael the biggest goober of the moment.
All he'll be uh, he'll be down at Coursefield tomorrow
part of our coverage from nine to noon with Mandy Connell.
Then we'll have KOA Sports from noon to one point
thirty walking you up to the Rockies home opener and
getting win number what would it be?
Speaker 2 (15:25):
Four on their way to eighty two?
Speaker 4 (15:27):
Right?
Speaker 2 (15:27):
Three?
Speaker 5 (15:28):
Three?
Speaker 2 (15:29):
They're two and four right now? I blue damn. Maybe
they're not getting eighty two wins this year.
Speaker 4 (15:33):
What you just you just did You just did a
turn and pivot like both both of you.
Speaker 6 (15:40):
You were seekers, were trying to say that I was
wet blanket along with that texter.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
It was seven to one nine. It wasn't us.
Speaker 6 (15:46):
Yes, but but I'm but I'm glad Nick came in,
Cosmeier came in and said some positive things because he
knows me. Listen, I'm I'm probably one of many of
the positive people that you know.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
I agree with that you're always an optimistic guy.
Speaker 4 (16:03):
The other sometimes who normally sits in a chair, who
has v neck.
Speaker 6 (16:07):
T shirts that medium yes a silk and win how
that's a whole different subject.
Speaker 1 (16:12):
Real quick, we got like thirty seconds before the break.
I thought Nick posed to you a great question there
when we were talking to him. What does it feel like?
You know, we all have the memories of like Friday
night lights in high school football running out on the field.
What's it feel like when you're running out of the
tunnel at an NFL stadium when you know you're about
to play in that game.
Speaker 4 (16:28):
It's unreal.
Speaker 6 (16:29):
It's hard to really describe and put into words. I'll
say this, It's something that I wish that every human
being had an opportunity to experience, because it's one of
those life changing moments that you can say, well, where.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
Were you when this happened?
Speaker 5 (16:46):
Right?
Speaker 6 (16:46):
And to run out to know that that PA announcer
is announcing your name and the fans that are going crazy,
they're going crazy for you. A lot of people who
want to live in that moment, in that spotlight, and
a lot of people won't even have an opportunity to
ever get a glimpse of what that feels like.
Speaker 4 (17:04):
That's why I never take it for granted.
Speaker 1 (17:06):
We're gonna get a glimpse around in the NFL when
we come back with the NFL six Pack on Broncos
Country tonight.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
Bendamin Albright off this evening.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
I'm Grant Smith filling in for him alongside Nick Ferguson
Zach Seekers behind the glass before we get to the
six pack, Nick, you sent me this funny audio I
think it went. I think it was last year during
the season and maybe during the Broncos bye week or something.
Speaker 2 (17:33):
You can set it up if you'd like.
Speaker 6 (17:35):
Yeah, this is uh this funny video of three of
the Broncos quarterback Zach Wilson, Bow Nicks and Jerry Stidham,
and they're being asked some questions by their wives and
girlfriend as it pertains to things only women would know.
Speaker 4 (17:51):
I just I just found it very interesting.
Speaker 5 (17:54):
Okay, what what are the different sizes of Tampon's good
marr know meaning large, regular, plus, super plus.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
What's your mega.
Speaker 1 (18:11):
Super plus and minus, like.
Speaker 4 (18:15):
Like that good.
Speaker 5 (18:19):
Street flavor in Tampa.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
Flavors like cherry, Yes, exactly, like there's one with a flower. Okay,
so these things men don't really know what give any
thought to very often mega.
Speaker 4 (18:37):
But also the.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
He was reaching was reaching for that one.
Speaker 6 (18:44):
That one was hilarious because I don't know about you.
Have you ever had to go to the market to
pick up some I guess tampam.
Speaker 2 (18:57):
Yes, yes I have.
Speaker 1 (18:59):
And the first time I went in there with wide
eyes and I was like, oh my god, there's so
many options.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
I have no idea what to do.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
So now, if I ever have to do it again,
send me a picture, Have the wife send me a picture.
I'll get you exactly what you need because I have
no idea what I'm lucky at.
Speaker 6 (19:15):
I was shopping and I was looking, I was trying
to figure it out, and there was this woman.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
She was just like, Uh, do you need any help?
Speaker 2 (19:22):
Pase help me.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
That's great five six six nine zero the text line
and if you want to get involved in the conversation
seven p. One nine who called you a wet blanket
earlier said be careful, Grant. You don't want to edge
into that wet blanket territory. You don't have to worry
about me. I think that's in reference to me saying
maybe the Rockies won't win eighty two games. Eighty two
games they're getting NAT's.
Speaker 6 (19:49):
All of this is calming by way of one person
and one person. The person who's not on tonight and
that's one Benjamin O.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
Brook Yep, try that blanket out, ben year Off.
Speaker 1 (20:01):
On an unrelated note before we get to the six pack,
this will kind of tie into it. But one of
my best friends from growing up, his dad owned a
bar that we went to when we were in college.
We were townies at Ohio University. He passed away today
from cancer. He was a big beer drinker, great dude,
one of the most happy, go lucky guys. You could
(20:22):
imagine wearing his shirt from his bar today. Sending my
condolences out to my one of my best buddies, Anthony
and his dad, Tony. It was a sad call to
get but man, he lived life to the fullest. So
this NFL six pack is for Tony Silvester.
Speaker 2 (20:38):
So let's get to it. It's time for the NFL
six patas insight and insight information you can't find anywhere else.
Speaker 5 (20:48):
No.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
Six The top six NFL headline.
Speaker 4 (20:52):
On shout out to Tony.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
Nfl dot Com listed the Dolphins, Jets, Stealer, and Chiefs
as the four NFL teams with the most pressure on
them this NFL Draft. Which NFL team do you think
is under the most draft pressure? And how much pressure
do you think the Broncos are under.
Speaker 6 (21:14):
I'll started by saying the Cleveland Browns are under a
lot of pressure. That's a team that has underperformed for
so many consecutive years and they need to find a
way to build a roster that is definitely competitive because
we don't know who's going to be the start. Is
it going to be Dylan Gabriel, Is it going to
be Shaduaul Sanders, or it is going to be Deshan Watson.
But as far as the pressure on the Denver Broncos,
(21:36):
there's a little pressure on them because ideas that you
just want to continue to build and add the appropriate depth.
But more than that, not so much because this team
is still intact, which is why we can't really say
run it back, but we can't say reboot. And it's
about giving they Sayers the boot. If you're a Denver
Broncos fan.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
I would say it's one of those four that are
on the list, say the Dolphins, right behind them the Jets.
But the Dolphins have completely rebranded into their rebuild, getting
rid of Jalen Waddel, getting rid of Tua.
Speaker 2 (22:09):
I mean they moved on from a couple of other
key players.
Speaker 1 (22:13):
I think they have to hit on some of these
draft picks to keep their fan base believing in that rebuild.
And I don't think the Broncos are under too much
pressure in this year's drafty they gave up two of
their best draft picks or Jalen Waddel, I think you're
okay to run it back, even if Sean Payton doesn't
like that term.
Speaker 2 (22:30):
You'd love to add a couple of pieces.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
We know George is doing great at that over the
past few years with the later round picks. So I
don't think there's that much pressure on the Broncos in
the draft this year.
Speaker 3 (22:40):
I think the pressure that does exists is you feel
confident in adding that depth, but can you find a
guy that helps you chase a Super Bowl Right now?
This year with the Bills and Ravens installing a new
head coach and Mahomes coming back from injury really quick,
I'll shout out your Bengals as a team with a
lot of pressure on them. It's the playoffs the last
three year. The only way they can really build up
(23:02):
that defense is through the draft. With how much they
have invested in the offense. If they hit on a
draft though they could maybe be in the Super Bowl. Yeah,
but that's a big if two strain into wet blanket territory.
Grant care for seven one nine's gonna get on you.
A new article for ESPN's Tim McManus and Jeremy Fowler
(23:24):
paints Jalen Hurts as a larger than expected factor in
the Eagles offensive struggles over the past few seasons. In
your opinion, though, how responsible for the Eagles sputters is
Jalen Hurts? And does this article point to a mess
behind the scenes in Philly?
Speaker 6 (23:41):
It does point to a mess behind the scenes. And
I guess that was Kevin Bittullo, the individual who was
given the task of keeping the ship or the praying
on the tracks for the Philadelphia Eagles. And yeah, there's
some blame to go around for Jalen Hurts, but not
as much as it is, ipinion for the offensive coordinator
(24:02):
a team where they've had a multitude of different offensive coordinators,
and those coordinators have kept this offense firing, you know,
and being explosive. But Patulo comes in and something, something
doesn't happen the way that it needs him so much
so that now he's fired, and I think Batulo's now
with the Miami Dolphins on their stet.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
Correct passcavid coordinator there, and Sean Mannion's in New OC
in Philadelphia. I think the biggest reason, more than Jalen
Hurts for their sputters on offense is their success over
the years.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
A lot of these offensive coordinators he's had, He's.
Speaker 1 (24:38):
Had six I believe now this will be his six
this year, have gone on to be head coaches after
their success. They are not sticking around to build up
a little more continuity in that offense, and he's got
to start over every year. I think this is just
another hit piece coming out of Philadelphia. I think it's
feels like one comes out every offseason, and now Jalen
Hurts is a guy that they're blaming.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
I generally agree.
Speaker 3 (25:01):
I think he's a you know, maybe he's got some
holes in his game, but he's a very good quarterback.
And I do think there's maybe some dysfunction behind the scenes, though,
with the Kevin Pictulo stuff and then pushing out the
offensive line coach.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
It seems a little messing that one's interesting.
Speaker 3 (25:17):
Free Fernando Mendoza earned rave reviews for his performance at
Indiana's Pro Day today. But we've seen this before with
Zach Wilson and several others. So I want to ask
you how meaningful do you think pro days are? And
do you think these auditions are ultimately more helpful for
the teams because of the information we're harmful because of
(25:39):
how it can maybe lead them astray.
Speaker 6 (25:41):
Well, I think it's harmful because it can lead guys
astray because they're looking for certain things and understanding that
a lot of these pro day workouts they are scripted.
Guys have gone over them, so there's mostly memory associated
with it. And we see guys throw deep pass after
deep pass and everyone's ooing and on. But it's like,
I mean, that's not real football because no one's really
(26:03):
chasing him.
Speaker 4 (26:03):
Now.
Speaker 6 (26:04):
You could chase the guy with the broom, right, but
that that's not like an actual Aaron Donald guy chasing
someone off the edge. But I think Fernando Mendoza didn't
really need to work out. He worked out all season long.
He won the freaking Heisman, the team went undefeated.
Speaker 4 (26:19):
We watched him do so many.
Speaker 6 (26:21):
Different things, and it pisses me off to hear individuals
say that they feel and it's their own opinion, but
this is just mine that Ty Simpson is a better
quarterback than Fernando Mendoza. And I'm like, well, he didn't
prove it. He didn't prove it in Alabama.
Speaker 3 (26:37):
Well, Nick, you don't share an agency with Ty Simpsons,
so that might be why you have that a picture.
Speaker 2 (26:42):
Daniel Rolovsky's taking shots here.
Speaker 1 (26:44):
He takes enough shots from his own guys on the
Pat McAfee show. We don't need to lay it on
him too, you know, yes we do, and I do
completely disagree with him.
Speaker 2 (26:54):
But going to the pro days, I think it's it's
really cool.
Speaker 1 (26:58):
It's great for the guys that are under the radar,
like the guys that Fernando Mendoza maybe is throwing too.
Speaker 2 (27:03):
Yes, but the only thing I think he.
Speaker 1 (27:05):
Can really learn about a top prospect in a pro
day is like if they freeze up or not. But
I agree with you that, Like you just watched the film.
Everything else is the kind of secondary You get to
talk to the guy, you make sure he's got a
good head on his shoulders, but just let the film
speak for itself. And Fernando Mendoza did that all last year.
Speaker 4 (27:26):
Four One of just.
Speaker 3 (27:30):
Three cornerbacks ever or sorry, over the last thirty years
to win Defensive Player of the Year. Stefan Gilmour officially
announced his retirement from the NFL to today, the other
two being Charles Woodson and of course Denver's very own
Patrick's thirt in the second, How does Gilmour compare in
your eyes to the best cornerbacks of the past decade
(27:50):
or so.
Speaker 6 (27:52):
I would say he's in the top twenty because when
you look at some of the corners who have played
the position, there are some great names, and I don't
think there's any disrespect to Stefan Gilmour's game because to
be mentioned in the lights of those types of guys
like a ty Law, Dion Samers of Champ Bailey, or
Charles Woodson or Rod Witson. I mean those guys who
(28:15):
they played in a different era. Things were a little different,
even though it was football. But he is definitely I
would say, either in your top twenty or your top fifteen.
Speaker 1 (28:25):
Yeah, I would agree with that. I'd say top twenty.
I mean you got guys like Darrell Reeves. Of course,
Zach mentioned ps two, who is arguably the best cornerback
in the league right now that twenty nineteen Defensive Player
of the Year year for him six interceptions and twenty
passes defended. But you see, as you get better and
you get that reputation around the league, like we've seen
(28:46):
with PS two here Jorge, you're not getting the opportunities
for all those interceptions.
Speaker 2 (28:50):
So I think he's.
Speaker 1 (28:51):
One of the greats at the position all time, and
I would agree top twenty probably for me as well.
Speaker 3 (28:56):
Yeah, I think that sounds about right. Really talented cornerback
had a kind of short peak. He started off with Buffalo, left,
went to New England. Bill Belichick got the most out
of him. He was an elite player for three four years,
and then he's kind of been bouncing around.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
The league since.
Speaker 5 (29:13):
Five.
Speaker 3 (29:16):
Today, the Atlanta Falcons revealed their new jerseys. Some people
have been laying labeling them a little too playing as
its modernized throwback look, going back to I think their
seventies seventies through nineties appearance. What do you think of
(29:37):
the new duds though? Do you like them as they
harken back to maybe the better Falcons uniforms of old,
or would you agree.
Speaker 2 (29:44):
That they're a little too vanilla.
Speaker 6 (29:46):
Well, I'm a fan of classic throwbacks, so I don't
have an issue with him. Listen, man, it doesn't make
it by the uniform because if you're not winning games,
no one really cares what you dressed in.
Speaker 5 (29:59):
Right.
Speaker 4 (29:59):
We want to be rest in ws so.
Speaker 6 (30:01):
But but I know there's some people I know, Yes,
in Atlanta, they liked the new look. And I've always
been a fan of that old you know, black helmet
with that falcon on the side of it.
Speaker 4 (30:12):
I need to get one of those from my collection.
Speaker 2 (30:15):
I love those.
Speaker 1 (30:16):
I love the red jerseys with the black helmet, and
I love the black jerseys with the red helmet. The
whites with the black helmet are fine, but the red
with the black helmet are awesome, and the black with
the red helmet are my favorite. Did you see the
hype video from Andre three thousand? That was really cool?
Speaker 4 (30:34):
Check that out. I didn't see that.
Speaker 1 (30:35):
Oh it was great. Go check that out of it.
I almost pulled the audio for it tonight, but it
is definitely worth the watch and Andre three thousand can
make anything sound cool.
Speaker 2 (30:44):
A side note, real quick.
Speaker 1 (30:46):
They asked about asked Adam Schefter about who Andre three
thousand was on the Pat McAfee show.
Speaker 5 (30:51):
Tell me.
Speaker 4 (30:52):
He didn't say he didn't know.
Speaker 2 (30:53):
He said, oh, he's from the Black Eyed Peas, right,
Oh my, everyone, that's the worst. God.
Speaker 1 (31:00):
Wow, if you don't know, he's from Outcast rock and
Roll Hall of Famers now Outcast.
Speaker 2 (31:04):
Yeah, I need to check out that video. I did
not know they They are worth the watch.
Speaker 3 (31:09):
I think it's you know, maybe not as great as
some of the very best throwbacks in the league. I
think the Bronco's up there with you know, maybe a
few more elements like some shoulder stripes or just whatever
going on.
Speaker 2 (31:21):
But I think it's a really clean look.
Speaker 3 (31:22):
It's a huge improvement over their old look, which was
maybe the worst uniform in the NFL. And I think
it's just a nice you know, it's a clean double.
Maybe not a home run out of the park, but
a double or triple. I think it's a really good look.
Speaker 4 (31:34):
I think that's fair.
Speaker 3 (31:37):
Six last one for a year Fanatics under the Tops brand.
I guess Fanatics owns Tops now, that's something I found
out looking into this story. Will take over the exclusive
rights for NFL trading cards now in the future. Have
you ever collected any trading cards and if so, do
you have a card that stands out in your memory.
Speaker 4 (31:59):
You know what.
Speaker 6 (31:59):
I did collect him as a kid, but I only
collected them to put them in spokes of my my
bike with go.
Speaker 4 (32:07):
You're the I mean, I didn't know. I just wanted
that sound.
Speaker 2 (32:12):
You know it did sound cool it they did.
Speaker 6 (32:15):
But I do have a couple now that I am
really proud of, one of Michael Jordan's Alan Iverson. So
so they're a couple that I that I do have.
But I wish I could go back and talk to
my younger self say hey, man, you might want to
keep that. Don't put that in your spot.
Speaker 2 (32:33):
In that little plastic case and keep safe.
Speaker 4 (32:36):
So no, I want to hear my bike make noise.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
It is funny you mentioned Alan Iverson. That was one
of my favorites. I had an Alan Iverson rookie card.
Another one I had that did not stand the test
of time, but it was really cool because I got
to meet the player. Lamar Odom signed card and I
was like, damn, this is so cool. I got to
meet the guy and he signed the card for me.
I had go ahead.
Speaker 4 (32:55):
I got a question, was it before Chloe kardash.
Speaker 1 (32:58):
When he was at Rhode Island, you know, and then
went to the NBA to the Clippers, and you were like,
this dude's a six to ten point guard.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
He's going to be the next Magic Johnson.
Speaker 1 (33:07):
And then kind of got in his own way with
the Kardashians and some drug problems, but you know, young
Grant was very excited about that. I had like three
binders full of trading cards.
Speaker 2 (33:19):
Growing do you still have them? My mom them.
Speaker 1 (33:23):
All away and I was so mad, dude, like, I
don't get but I'm mad at my mom very often,
great lady, I'm.
Speaker 2 (33:30):
A mama's boy.
Speaker 3 (33:31):
I was furious with her. That's heartbreaking. That's heartbreaking. I
had a similar story to you, Nick. I had a
Adrian Pearson rookie card. It wasn't like a special autograph
or anything like that, so not worth much today, but
would have been a cool one to keep. And I
was just like a seven eight year old kid when
Iron boxed it, so I didn't keep great care of it.
(33:52):
I still have it, but it's not idied sell for
you know any sort of money.
Speaker 2 (33:57):
Trade cards are making a comeback, man.
Speaker 5 (33:59):
They are.
Speaker 6 (34:00):
But I can't be the only kid that put their
cards in the spokes of their bikes.
Speaker 1 (34:04):
I think that was just because of the age gap
between Okay, okay, that was a cool thing to do
back in like back in the late seventies, early eighties.
Speaker 2 (34:14):
Okay, we recognize their value.
Speaker 6 (34:17):
Oh okay. Me, on the other hand, is like, hey,
let's give that another run.
Speaker 2 (34:22):
Oh my bike sounds cool now. Ruining a Michael Jordan
rookie card Nick has been a glasses always man.
Speaker 1 (34:29):
Appreciate your man, Appreciate you seekers behind the glass. You've
been listening to Broncos Country tonight.
Speaker 2 (34:34):
Okay o
