Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's been all bright Dickferguson's next seekers here with you five, six, six,
nine zero. The text line as always, Rockies win and
one against the Phillies nine to seven. What's the Rockies
at sixteen twenty three on the season in Philadelphia Phillies
at seventeen and twenty two. Chase dolla Ender goes five
and two thirds inning, giving up two runs, both of
them Earned.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Hill got an inning.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
Then Bernardino and Hergett got into a little bit of trouble,
allowing the Phillies to come back, give it up five
runs Old merten between them, but then Victor Vodnick and
Juan Mahea take the last three innings, keep it scoreless
and allow the Rockies to pull things out. In extras,
it was definitely Hunter Goodman's day four of five, hitting
Tyler Freeman two of six with a Castro two of five.
(00:45):
They had home runs from Freeman and Goodman for the Rockies.
You know, I Jack pointed out, I think during the
broadcast it was like June sixteenth by the time the
Rockies that had this many last year.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Now we were sitting here watching this game anxiously watching.
I have to ask you were you a little nervous
because obviously, you know, we walked in and the Rockies
had what we believed to be a commanding lead, and
then all of a sudden, it changed really fast. So
were you were you nervous that the Rockies were going
(01:22):
to somehow let this one slip through the hands?
Speaker 4 (01:25):
Like sand don't.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
I don't think I'm invested enough, Like I don't think
that I like to be nervous. It was more like, well, okay,
they blew that, but oh, pleasant surprise, you know.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
I mean, they are sixteen twenty three.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
It is not like they're competing for a World series here,
but they are better, and they're they're climbing their way
back into being a respectable and relevant franchise.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Love the fact that they're getting wins.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Love the fact that even though they kind of blew it,
they managed to they blew a seven two lead, they
managed to come back and win a nine to seven
and extras and have the poise and the patients to
uh to settle back down and be able to do that.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
But I think this is important for the Rockets.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
Obviously, no one has proclaimed this team to be in
a pennant chase.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
I mean, we both can agree that.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
But when you constantly leave runners stranded on and in
the scoring position, that's the part that.
Speaker 4 (02:12):
I'm just like, oh man, come on. But they were
able to pull it up right, and the eleventh.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
In it, they were able to pull it out.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
They left quite a few runners in scoring position with Castro, Freeman,
Rumfeld twice, Tovar carols this was see right, they did
leave that. Jimmy Hergett got the the win despite giving
up two runs to earn did one inning of work
at the end of the day. I you know, I mean,
(02:41):
I just appreciate that they found a way to battle back.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
So do you believe that this, even with the season
being what it is and the team being un five hundred,
that a.
Speaker 4 (02:50):
Game like this can be a confident booster?
Speaker 3 (02:53):
Yeah, you had earlyly you lost the league, but you
can't you left runner stranded on, but you found Away.
Speaker 4 (03:00):
He found Away.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
He did.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
Fascinating statistic the between both teams, they left fifty runners
on base over the course of this game. Jeez, fifty Now,
I know, I went to eleven innings, so that added
the added It's still fifty runners were left on base
twenty two by the Rockies.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Twenty eight by the Phillies.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
See, I like baseball games like this where they go
into extra and.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
She was a defense guy. This just was not a
defensive baseball game.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
Well, I mean this is a different sport though. This
is a different sport, all.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Right, And I like the extra innings because now the
strategy comes in from the skippers. Now what are you
going to do with your bullpen? How do you utilize
your bullpen? Sometimes you bring a guy in he pitched
his pitches two innings, or he just pinches, you know,
just to kind of get a let's hand banner out.
Speaker 4 (03:50):
Then you go switch to the other guy.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
And then if you have a game that next day,
that plays a role into it. So for me, it
is that the chess match that goes on and the dougouse,
who's gonna do?
Speaker 4 (04:01):
What? What guy you need for tomorrow? See that's the
part I love.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
And they did have to do some of that with
some of the pinch hitting and shifting around on defense.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
Certainly that was interesting.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
Rockies get the win and yeah again in exciting fashion
in overtime or extra innings as it were.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Any in baseball.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
Sport that does have overtimes football, Denver Broncos general manager
George Peyton not going to begin the twenty twenty six
season on the final year of his contract. The Broncos
announced today George Payton has inked a five year extension
through the twenty thirty season. This new deal arrives obviously
months after the Broncos made their first AFC Championship appearance
since they won the Super Bowl during the twenty fifteen season,
(04:41):
and extension also followed reported speculation the Minnesota Vikings were
pursuing him in their general manager search for taking over
for longtime top exec and franchise icon John Elway. Peyton
spent fourteen seasons in Minnesota, rising from the Vikings player
personnel ranks starting in twenty two thousand and seven all
the way through only twenty Sean. Payton said of George
(05:02):
working with Georgia over the last four seasons, I appreciate
the alignment we share and positioning the Broncos for sustained success.
What do you think about the Broncos re upping George Peyton.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
I love every aspect of it, and I know there
was a lot of questions with everything looming about Minnesota
and their GM vacancy. As a quasi adofu. They relieved
him of his job and Quasy. After he leave his job,
he went right back to San Francisco where he came from.
And I can't really say this, but if I'm thinking,
(05:35):
you know, in the frame of mind of George Payton,
you have what you've done with the Denver Broncos, and
you're looking at the Minnesota Viking situation. That's where you
cut your teeth, that's where you spend a lot of
your years. But they have a little turnol there because
they're trying to figure out their quarterback situation. So I
just feel as though this was a great marriage and
why break up the band?
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (05:55):
I think it was working well. Why break up the Payon.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
And George Payton's draft track record in Denvers has been
impressive at the ground running in that department with Pat
Certan three years before he won Defense Player of the
Year five of Peyton's draft picks since twenty twenty one
as signed second contracts with the Broncos. His first draft
class not only had Certannic Quinn Miners outside linebacker Jonathan Cooper,
and then the following year, picking at the end of
the second round, scoops up Nick Benito, who's been a
(06:19):
standout edge as well, fourth in the NFL Defensive Player
of the Year voting last season and with fourteen sacks,
several key free agents signings while constructing a championship caliber
roster three year deal that brought in Zach Allen. Whenever
the fans wanted you to keep Draymond Jones, they let
Draymond go and brought Zach Allen. So the Broncos obviously
hoping to contend once again for an ABC title in
(06:41):
twenty twenty six, but locked up I think probably the
most important person in terms of building this roster from
what it was. There have been some misfires along the way,
Rady Gregory, Frank Clark, the Russell Wilson deal, and Nate
Hackett hiring, but overall, I think George Payton's done a
phenomenon a job, especially with the draft.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Yeah, what do you make of those early conversations is
because I know there were talks that maybe George Payton
and Sean Payton were not getting along and there was
kind of.
Speaker 4 (07:06):
A struggle or power struggle, that.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
Is to say, well, who was going to get to
make the final decision when it comes to putting this
roster together for me. I know, like any relationship, there's
always going to be disagreement, But the one thing that
you can agree on is in a family situation, the
family is the most important thing. In this situation, the
organization is the most important thing. So when I see
(07:29):
this signing five, the extension, that puts to bed any
kind of debate that there was some kind of Turmoli
difference as a tug of war between these two men.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
Yeah, I don't really think that there was.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
I mean, other than the fact that Sean you assumes
the power of a you know, tries to assume all
the power and all that kind of stuff. But George
is is so egoless, you know. I think he's kind
of the perfect guy to deal with that and to
be in there and just kind of let that roll
off his back while he's in there, like, look, I'm
from the scouting side of the house.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
This is what I do.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
Let's go to the draft and find some more gems
and make them Denver Broncos.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
Yeah. I mean, if you've ever been around George Payton, man,
he is two then a glass of ice water, right,
Because he's easy to talk to, Loaves a game of football.
I'm glad that he's here. I'm glad that the Broncos
are having their success. I'm also glad that now we
can see and endure more of that success for another
(08:24):
five years.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
So I love it.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
Now the question becomes what happens with John Payton's contract.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
That'll be interesting.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
Peyton, who has repeatedly praised George Payton by the way
for his leadership, collaboration, talent evaluation skills. Coaches, often pointed
out the strong working relationship between the front office and
the coaching staff as a major factor in Denver's recent resurgence.
So extending this contract I think emphasized his ownership's belief
that the continuity will help the team remain competitive for
the next few years.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
That it will be.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Yeah, well, we'll see about that Sean Payton deal that's
coming up here fairly soon.
Speaker 3 (08:58):
And I say that, I say the deal gets done.
What you say, why do you say?
Speaker 2 (09:05):
YEA?
Speaker 1 (09:06):
I think this year is that if he does well,
you know, if they replicate the success from last year,
if if the Davis web thing works out, you know whatever.
But I think there's a lot going on this year.
You need to kind of figure out and then Sean
pay How old is Sean Payton now?
Speaker 4 (09:18):
I mean Georgie's sixty two? Uh, maybe I have to.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
Ship sixty two.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
I know George Payton is two on the dot. Well,
Nick turned sixty three in late December.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
Okay, so he turned sixty three this year. George, ag
are you no? No, no, no, no, not at all.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
I just think you know inside of sixty right, and
what I mean, but at what point do you? At
what point are you sort of you know, kind of
eyeballing that if you're Sean Payton, what is it that
you're sticking around for.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
I mean, he wants to win a Super Bowl with
the Broncos. If you will do.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
Something no one else has ever done, win a Super
Bowl with two separate franchises, and he needs that. And
Sean Payton doesn't get that, He's not gonna get the
who of fame.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
Well, the whole thing could be like boll saying, bow
Knicks development and his numbers.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
Yeah, yes, I mean, I mean like there's a reason
Sean Payton's you know, Sean Payton is in it to
win a Super Bowl? Well, I mean everybody, yes, not ever,
everybody is not you know, what I mean, Sean Payton
is about legacy, and he knows that he wants the
Hall of Fame and he will not get it unless he.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
Does something no one else has done and wins the
Super Bowl two diferent.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
So we've seen every single year since he's been here,
the team has actually up the ante. Every year bo
has improved. The team's a playoff position has improved every
single year. We just saw in the second year bow
nixt second year fourteen and three. Let's just say for
the sake of argument, this is the year twenty twenty six.
(10:44):
Do you think Broncos goes to Super Bowl win the
Super Bowl? Sean Payton's gonna do what Peyton Manning did
was wave goodbye because he's now achieved with something something
someone else and this game has never done.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
You think that happens. I don't know if he wins
it yet. I think he goes. I think he's done.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
I think that's he that's the thing he needs, Like
he's won a super Bowl, but he needs another one,
and he needs it with the Broncos obviously, in order
to cement that legacy, because he's got too much scandal
and only won Super Bowl despite the fact that he had.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
Drew Brees was talking about. Can say, man, I'm talking
about Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (11:20):
I'm talking No, I'm talking about the reason that he
won't he won't make the Hall unless he gets this.
I'm just trying to lay out the reasons. Like it's
not like these are secrets everybody knows. Everybody knows about
damn man.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
Just because there have been some things in the past,
tell that shouldn't keep you in mind. Because if you
look at some of the guys who are in the Hall,
who are players, they.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Got too, But this is in the Hall things a coaching.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
I mean, Mike Shanaan's not you know which that's the
travesty and Shanahan had multiple Super Bowls and so and
Shanahan you know, I mean he had Lway and all that.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
But I mean he didn't have Drew Brees prime Drew Brees.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
But can the man changed his image? Right e second chances. Whatever,
whatever happened in the past can now be pushed it
aside based on what's happening in the present.
Speaker 5 (12:09):
And even without a second ring, how many coaches have
accomplished what he has accomplished developing multiple quarterbacks. I know
you saved dreams with the same guy in San Diego,
but no one else is really on that take, and
then no one else is. He developed Drew Breeson too,
a Hall of Fame level quarterback. He developed Bo Nix
into a starter. He's you know, gone to two different franchises,
(12:30):
made them, you know, lifted both from low end teams
to high end competitors.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
What other coaches have that on their resume? Like Parcells?
Speaker 5 (12:38):
Who did What's who's the second quarterback? John Fox developed?
Who's the first quarterback? John Fox to Jake Delome? Okay,
the second one?
Speaker 2 (12:45):
Tim Tebow? Oh?
Speaker 5 (12:48):
Tim Tebow? You want to hear you don't even believe that.
You don't even believe do you believe? Was Tim Tebow
as good a quarterback as bow Nix is?
Speaker 2 (12:58):
Now? No, of course, bingo bingoically back that.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
Nathan Peterman though, and from Ben.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
Tebow is twice the quarterback Nathan Peterman was though, because Lord,
still don't understand that at the end of the day.
But that's what you're describing as John Fox, the guy
who went and was a culture changer and improved franchises,
went to multen out.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
Foxy went to multiple Super Bowls.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
Well, wait a minute, now, if it were not for
some bad calls by some officiates, some officials, then Sean
would have had, you know, two more opportunities.
Speaker 4 (13:26):
Remember the co Robey Coleman.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
That's remember that call, the cow Rudolph extension inside the
end zone. Those were two blown calls that they changed
like after the fact, like they should have called. That
would have moved alongst the season for coach Payton.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
So the conversation would have been different.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
Maybe I don't know. This is a conversation we need
to have all the time.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
This is one of these things because I've got I've
got so much stuff to lay out as far as
this going to
Speaker 2 (13:51):
The case against and we just don't have time to
get into that
