I we were out there practice today is another day
where the defense kind of gets better the offense, which
has been you know, for the last two days, or
of the opposite of the way it has been.

What did you notice out today? What jumped out at
you today?

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Well, what's it's not a news flash, but that tam Ellinger.
If you if you're not looking real close to the numbers,
there's a lot of boat nickish kind of qualities in
terms of the ability to move, throw on the move,
Do things be on the move? At number eighth, Sparky
city kind of can't you know you you like what

you've seen the Malcolm Roach, you like you you've seen
the Osaka. I'm gonna say I always start I always
tell myself in my head, I'm going to pronounce that right,
and it always comes out wrong. Yeah, the d's ahead,
but but it you know, that's to be expected in parts.
And we're being very very cautious with veterans, as I

think they should be at this time of the you're
this early in camp. It feels a lot later in
camp that it is based on talking to people like
yourselves who've been out there for four days. I think
everybody looks kind of tired already, h in the media corps,
but the players seem all right. I think Sean's got
to looking at this as a as a marathon and
doc sprint, and I think that's the right way to

do it.

So, San, how do you assess young Chris Abrams train? Oh,
if I'm not mistaken, head interception on one bow, Nick,
So what do you think about his development?

Speaker 2 (02:01):
I think it's a it's not even a good it's
it's I was gonna say, it's a good problem to have.
It's not even a problem. I think he's been one
of those there's a lot of it's one of the
one of those things where talking about it's no longer
hip or ahead of the curve, talk about how good
Jay Kwan McGill it is anymore, right, But it's pretty
clear to everybody that this is the player Chris Abrams

(02:22):
drained it. Chris Abrams drain has kind of come along
kind of in a similar quiet track of if you
had to play this guy on the outside as he
did for I don't know how many games, uh while
PSG was out that that you can he's okay there
and certainly they have more trusting him there, which goes

back to another theme that we've talked about off and
on for a while. They kind of trust him there
outside more than d Baron, which kind of defeats one
of the points that draft him Baron. Really, So I
think that's a that's a credit day train, that's a
credit to the folks who've worked with him past at
president and that Yeah, he's kind of it doesn't get

talked about a lot, and he had had a good
day and he's got them up. I don't know what
the ceiling is, but I think you feel good about
that if that's your CB three or CB four at
the floor.

Fascinating as we look at the depth charts on this thing.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
We're talking about this earlier, and you know, there are
teams that have surface level talent that if they stay
healthy and you know, they can win, but they lose
a couple of pieces and the wheels come off. This
Broncos team looks like, I mean, outside of maybe the
quarterback position, looks like a team that, even if it's
not relatively healthy, has got enough next man up guys

(03:41):
that they could still be a contender.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Yeah, I think that's I think that's then on and
I think a great example of that when I think
about last year of things that I thought might fall
apart in certain places where how yeah it's the interior
of the offensive line, but how many guys Ben Powers
was an elite PF have kind of grated guy for
a long time, and he didn't play a lot last year.

(04:06):
You know, as an example, you brought up Abrams Train
is another example where you've suddenly had a life of
Riley Moss as a as a CD one and we
all kind of thought, how's that gonna go? I think
I don't think it was one. I don't think I
don't think they lost me. He's many all year, but
that that worked out, okay, So yeah, to your point,

(04:28):
there aren't a lot of the names you would think
that are critical for if this person isn't here and
we're really in trouble. It's not a long list. Now
you BONEI that list depending on how much your comfort
level with with with running city out there. But it's yeah,
you go back to edge guys, the kind of depth

(04:50):
on the edge, the kind of depth and now you're
seeing for the competition to replace JFM, their dudes. As
our good friend Steve Adazio liked to say, there are
a lot a lot of dudes, and there are a
lot of levels where that's got to fall off to
hurt multiple positions. Wide receiver Pat Bryant is kind of

men Courtland sudden right like, there is a plan B
in a lot of places I think where they would
hit that point that you note is probably most significantly
a quarterback and knock on wood, we cannot to answer that.

Speaker 4 (05:25):
Question, Sean, how much do you pay attention to and
make it a point of emphasis of suggesting and we'll
come on who won the day today? How important is
that or is it even important? As it pertains to
the Broncos competing on either side of the ball.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
A lot less a lot less than the typical Bronco fan.
But I'm not I've always been a little dubious about
spring a couple of things, spring game box scores and
early training camp wins and losses. It's they're all important,

(06:06):
and you are and Nick, you know this better than
I and can speak to it way better than I could.
You want to stack good things, right, You want to
build that momentum for the next five weeks and getting
ultimately to where we are now, and keep it again,
just keep stacking and moving that forward. So I think
there is there's value in the you know, baseball analogy

(06:27):
to we win the day. Yeah, like you know, life's
a baseball game. Camps the baseball game. But let's try
to do this, and coaches have to do this. They
keep it people from going nuts, because otherwise you're just
gonna start punching each other, right because you just go crazy,
Just hit the same guy. It's for seventeen twenty five
days straight, or however many it's staggered, it just gets
kind of monotymous after a while, I think it has value.

(06:49):
I don't think it has the value that the press
corps that I respect around here kind of you know,
runs it through. But it's football a football town, and
we have a Super Bowl contender, So every snap matters
and every rent matters that way, because you never know,
as we learned in January, when somebody that you didn't

(07:10):
see a lot of suddenly or you didn't see a
lot of between September and December has to kind of
save your bacon in January. So yeah, there's there's some
value there.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
Tylo Sean Keeler from the Number Post John. As we
look at this this coming season, I think virtually everyone
I've talked to thinks this team as a contender for
whatever that means.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
At the end of the day.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
They feel like they can be a playoff team and
can be a Super Bowl contender. Is h what is
the baseline for this season? What mark does this season
become successful? At what point does it become a disappointment?

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Well, this is the disappointment is an easier one because
if you're not a playoff team, something would have had
to go on really wrong. Back to the you know,
no bo like it almost feels like that's the oldest
scenario where you wouldn't make the postseason is again, please Lord,
do's not happen. But you know, however, many weeks, five,
six weeks without mix, I don't see that happening, and

clearly you're trying to avoid that. I think that's that's
the worst case in terms of what's your baseline for
what's what's successful, It's it's defending the division, which is
always going to be tough. It's it's again we're back
to stacking. Then it's I think whatever form that takes.
I think winning the division is a baseline for is

(08:29):
a successful and getting you want to say get, I mean,
we're can we say taking steps forward?

Right?

Speaker 2 (08:38):
And I guess the only answer is if we've gone
from getting to the playoffs, great, break the playoffs route
twenty twenty four are awesome, get a home playoff game
at twenty five, win that. If anything, they took two
steps last last winter Fall Winter and then winning that
home playoff game, and now the only thing left is
get into the Big One and and getting to a

(08:58):
super Bowl. So I mean you could make it argument
that they don't make the Super Bowl as a failure.
I think that's that's a little harsh the way this
division in this conference is lined up. But given the
path that we're on right the stair steps that were taken,
I don't think it's necessarily an unfair one either. But
I think the only way is an absolute failure to

me is if you're whether you're ten and seven or
whatever form or nine to eight, whatever record, don't make
the playoffs. I think that's the only thing that's an
abject disaster, and I don't see that happening.

Speaker 4 (09:30):
Sean. I have to say I definitely agree with you
as a former player who spent my time in this
organization on the Pat Bowling and Mike Cheney, and that
has to be the standard. It has to be super
Bowl the bus. If you don't win the Super Bowl,
you don't make it there, that should be considered a
failure because that means that you're setting the standards high.
The other part of the Broncos offense that's setting the

(09:52):
standing high is Troy Franklin. And I know everyone's been
talking about Jalen Watte and what he means to this team,
but what do you think, Well, how do you think
Jenna Wadu's presence will have an impact on the development
of Troy Franklin.

Speaker 2 (10:07):
Well, it does someone who's gonna lose first theme of
reps at some level and maybe some antison reps. Right,
that's just math. You've added another one A or one
B guy you've got to push. Whether you thought Franklin
or Mims was that that too? Well, now you're three
or a four, and again you're we're back to the

(10:29):
depth thing where boy, that's a good pro that's a
good thing because you know at least a baseline what
you're gonna get in a worst case scenario from a
lot of these guys that would be your three and
your four, and a lot of teams would be desperate
to have it. So I don't know that it I
don't know that it helped the development, to be honest,
because and again you can speak to this better than
I could, because you are going to lose some of

(10:50):
that time and maybe frankly that factors into some of
those veteran days too, right, especially early on. I who
knows how many reps we're going to get, you know,
for for X, Y and Z, and in case try
Franklin for first team reps for him once Courtland's healthy,
and we we you know know, we feel we have

(11:11):
to push Jayden Jalen Wattle more as opposed to now.
And obviously there there be an extra cautious now as
well they should be. I don't know that helps, but
I think that there's there's gotta be more unlock and
we'll have to see health wise, you know, where those
snaps end up coming into what degree who gets cut

(11:31):
into what? Uh? And then you might have to make
a decision now. But it's a great the most interesting
part of the preseason to me always, and this is
something I think that George Payton does well and that
Sean Payton does well. Where they work well together is
kind of what you do when camp breaks or when
everybody when when you see the cuts and see what
else is left in the pool, and then how do

(11:52):
you finish off between Greek season week three and regular
season week one, what do you do to tweak from
that moment. I think this organization is really really good
at that has been good at that, and I think
that's the part where we're going to re examine. Do
we have too many wide receivers, too many good wide
receivers that we might be able to move one to

(12:13):
shore us up somewhere else. I'm not saying it's a
good idea, but I don't think you can really make
that email until you've gotten through this preseason and see
what everybody else looks like, and then your weaknesses are.
I think they're pretty good at addressing weaknesses personnel wise
when they have them. No weakness is play calling. Two
tendencies may not as much in terms of a Sean

(12:36):
and his desire to run a screen every other play,
but in terms of personnel, I think they're pretty good
at identifying where they need help.

That season going to be starting here this month is
a wildly different Colorado team, at least in terms of
offensive defensive couardator. You got a new defensive cordator. Do
you have a competent offensive coordinator? What is the expectation
for the cut? They've turned the page completely now on
the shoe door in Travis Hunter era.

Speaker 2 (13:04):
Well, I think any step forward, and we've talked about
this is a good step forward. That doesn't make four
and eight a good year. It doesn't make five and seven.
A good year necessarily a lobo of the shape of that,
you know, could could vary. If you beat some ranked
teams in there, and you get some momentum and you
get the big crowds, we're back to something I've always
talked about. If you get the crowds back and you

(13:25):
get that money, you get the enthusiasm going. I think
that's going to be positive for Leon Sanders and for
where this year is kind of going. And there are
more than that, And the best and worst thing about
the Big twelve he is after those kind of nil
two that the Texas Tech can pay the oil money

(13:48):
and cookie money, then everybody else's Utah might be a
little and Arizona State might be a little bit ahead
of that. But other than those big two, you've got
a lot of parody there and a lot of close
games that you've got it that you didn't win last year,
that you did win in twenty four. You got to
try to get back to that swing, though, And it's

(14:09):
that kind of league for better for worse. So I
can see them split the difference there and it's kind
of again a four to eight win, five to seven
win kind of team on paper, but every outcome is
there for better. First, the variance of what could happen
in Boulder is pretty wide because a lot of it
not just because the personnel turnover and the coaching. You know,

(14:30):
where's the way to lead you is. It's is pretty wild.
After those top two and then I was staying it
will probably be bad and kind of regiering what they do,
and after back Campbell left, So there's a lot of
room for spots whatever three through fifteen, and see, you

(14:51):
wouldn't shock me if they land in any one of those,
depending on how some of these close games come. October
is really big for them. I really broke down and
we're doing more of that apost dot com. When I
really started looking at their schedule, I think there's three
home games there, and I think two of them are
Texas Tech in Case State. If I'm not mistaken, you've
got a chance with those home games that if you

(15:11):
can get some you Toll might be the other one.
You get some upsets, you get some momentum, assuming you
don't get buried by the first three weeks in September,
and you shouldn't you know, who knows. Again, there's a
lot of variants there. I'm not going to take six
or seven wins off the table, but you certainly can't
be one at three. That's going to be hard to
come back from that.

Starting off here with a local story.

Speaker 6 (16:36):
DJ Jones, Broncos defensive lineman, told the media today that
he believes the Broncos can break the eighty four Bears
sac record. This is the second time this offseason that
record has been discussed by a member of the Broncos
pass rush. Zach Allen mentioned it last month. Do you
think the Broncos can break that record of seventy two

(16:57):
sacks in a single season and how will this year's
pass fresh compared to the past two seasons where the
Broncos set the franchise record market sixty three and twenty
four and then in twenty twenty five reset that record
with sixty eight sacks.

Speaker 3 (17:11):
I think it's possible.

Speaker 1 (17:12):
I mentioned earlier, we taled to Nick Cosmider, and I
think Nick Ferguson here has pointed it out that the
Broncos are probably going to be in situations where opponents
are going to be passing a little bit more this year,
especially if the offense can hold up their end early
on in games and build leads, and so I think
there's been more opportunities for that, more opportunities for turnovers.
We'll see if they are able to actually convert those.

(17:33):
I think it's within reach. Obviously, you've got an extra
game on the eighty four Bears, so there's that as well,
you know. And the Broncos have certainly certainly shown the
ability to be productive the last couple of years sixty
eight sixty three sacks or certainly within the ballpark of
trying to make that happen. So I believe they can
do it.

Speaker 4 (17:51):
I believe that it's in reach. And it sounds like
lofty expectations, but every single year you have to set
the bar really high to to attain that particular goal,
and this is not get ourselves. The Broncos have the
ability to actually do it. They led the league and
consecutive years in that particular area, and then makes a

very valid point him something I was thinking about as well.
If this offense starts to produce as though we are anticipating,
and coach Sean Payton anticipates himself, that means that they're
going to have larger leads, which is going to force
other teams out of their run game and have to
throw the ball more, which increase an opportunity for the
edge rushers to get home. So yeah, I can see

(18:34):
it there's a strong possibility that they could pull it off.

Speaker 6 (18:37):
I ultimately fall at the same place that it is possible,
but I kind of worked backwards. I feel, man, there's
no way they could get five more sacks from what
this dominant pass rush already showed last year. But then
I think twelve months ago, if we were having this conversation,
I would have said.

Speaker 4 (18:53):
The same thing.

Speaker 6 (18:53):
I would have said, Hey, they just set the franchise
record with sixty three sacks, No way they're improving on
that number by five more in total. And then they
did just that, so why not do it again? Clearly
it's it's possible. With losing JFM, I think is going
to be the biggest Okay, here's what.

Speaker 4 (19:08):
I said really quickly though. So you got the Dolphins
on the schedule, got the Jets on the schedule, You
got the Carolina Panthers on the schedule. You have the
Rams on the schedule. Even though they're gonna they probably
gonna better defensively, but their quarterback can't really move. And
add this to it, last year, John Van cooper sack
total kind of went down just a little. If you
can get a little more effort from him, that would

(19:29):
change a lot and get the Broncos absolutely closer.

Speaker 1 (19:32):
It might have fewer games to get from him, as
totally believes there's a suspension break. I will say this,
this is the second Broncos player to publicly talk about
that sack record. You damn well better believe they are
privately talking about that back.

Speaker 5 (19:46):

Speaker 6 (19:49):
Yeah, I had to think, you know, with with it
bubbling up already, that's that has to be a point
of discussion behind the scenes. Stefan Diggs signed with the
Washington Commanders today, addressing the team's k Harry need a
wide receiver.

Speaker 4 (20:01):
What are your.

Speaker 6 (20:02):
Expectations for Diggs this season and what do you think
this means for Brandon Ayuk, who really all all summer long,
maybe even dating back to last offseason, has been tied
to the Commanders, But maybe Washington no longer wants him
after his social media escapades.

Speaker 4 (20:18):
Too much social media, too much Antonio Brown, that really
cost him. But with set this in motion, Piarso was
out for a season due to a knee injury in
San Francisco, and San Francisco needed a wide receiver. They
bring Deebo back. Adam Peters needed another veteran wide receiver,
and instead of going Brandon Ayuk based on some of

(20:40):
the things that he was doing, you bring in Stefan
Diggs and consider this last season, Deebo Samuel led the
room of wide receivers in yards and in touchdowns as well.
So you bring about, you know, Stefan Diggs. Stefan Diggs
had over a thousand yards last season the loan, so

(21:01):
you may think he's over the heel, but he's a
great compliment to Terry McCloy and I think he's gonna
do well with Jane Davis.

Speaker 1 (21:07):
Yeah, I think if you view and Diggs is the
number two guy, I think you're you're actually cooking with
something here. I know he's thirty two and then there's
been declining production on a per catch basis and all
that kind of stuff. However, you're right, last year he
had a thousand yards at Patriots offense. It didn't really
have a whole lot of other options at receiver. He
only had the four touchdowns, but if he'd had somebody
else to open it up, he might have been a
bigger threat at the end zone.

Speaker 3 (21:27):
I know he's four years removed from double digits, host
has all that kind of.

Speaker 1 (21:30):
Stuff as a one year guy or one year Rentald
you could you could do a lot worse. And certainly,
you know, Diggs has his own mercurial nature, but it's
not as Captain crazy.

Speaker 3 (21:40):
Pants as Brandon Ayuka is at this point, so.

Speaker 4 (21:43):
Captain crazy tans. And they really needed it. Gather.

Speaker 3 (21:47):
If you look at that receiver.

Speaker 6 (21:49):
Room right now, outside of those, I mean, prior to
this Digs signing, the number two receiver was either Luke McCaffrey,
Jalen Lane, Traylon Burks, or rookie third round Picky Antonio Williams.
They needed another you know, legit body there, and Digs
provides that even if he is over the hill, well
it was it was Burks. I will tell you it
was gonna be Burke's. I mean, that's not an exciting

number two. Yeah, McCaffrey is gonna be the starting slot receiver.
They do view McCaffrey as like wide receiver three, and
that is the slot. They were not moving him outside.
But yeah, trailing Burk's was going to be the other guy.
And so yes, they definitely need somebody the down roster.

They've tried Diammy Brown, Van Jefferson have just not materialized
in camp.

According to sources, three Cowboys wide receiver CD Lamb is
working to eliminate his catch issues with or sorry, working
to eliminate his issues with dropping the football by wearing
a net over his head during catching drills at training camp.

Speaker 4 (22:44):
What do you make of this method?

Speaker 6 (22:45):
And I'm curious what other weird practice methods are? Unorthodox
methods have you heard of?

Speaker 3 (22:52):
Well, I mean, yeah, the net thing, I don't know
what you know?

Speaker 1 (22:55):
Remember putting boxing gloves to keep guys from from grabbting
and holding as playing corner right, certainly? I think the
weirdest thing I ever saw was Johnny Manziel's Pro day
workout where they had brooms out there to represent defensive
lineman's arms or hands.

Speaker 3 (23:13):
Or something like that. He was raising brooms.

Speaker 1 (23:15):
I've seen some dumb stuff over the years. There's one
David Lee, the quarterback coach, who took the wildcat where
he was on staff at Arkansas and he brought it
to the NFL with the Miami Dolphins had quarterbacks throwing
tennis balls into trash cans down the field and claimed
that was a hand eye coordination thing that helped them
improve their aim. It works so well that they literally

(23:38):
transferred and revolutionized the formation in which the running back
had the football in his hands to throw the ball.

Speaker 4 (23:44):
Well, I don't think anything wrong is wrong with that,
because when I was here, you know, Bob Slog who
was my TV coach, he put boxing gloves on a
particular player. Will not say his name because he kept
holding so much. That's why when the Broncos did it,
the Riley Moss I was like, oh, I've seen this before,
but you do whatever it can you can to make
sure that players get the message. I've seen my high

(24:06):
school coach dunk the footballs in water because he wanted
the running backs to get used securying you know, balls
because of humidity in Miami sometimes the balls would sweat.
Believe it or not, but I mean also think about it.
If you played in inclement weather and you know he's
going to rain a lot, you would do that with
some of your running backs. So everyone comes up with

(24:27):
outrageous types of things. But putting a net around your
head because you having problems catching the ball, it's hand
eye coordination. It has nothing to do with that. With
the net is your eyes and can you see the
damn ball. Have you seen the photos of this? No,
I haven't seen it.

He looks like a bee keeper with this weird net
thing just over his head to I guess, try and
make it harder for him to see.

Speaker 3 (24:52):
He looks like a beekeeper.

Speaker 6 (24:53):
It's the weirdest looking contrap shoofy, especially because the Cowboys
offense is wearing white, so he's in this white uniform
with the net on his that he really yeah, be keeper.

he can gets it.

I think it's Simensu's status as the third string quarterback

I think this game is going to be laughably bad,
and we're so excited for football, we're going to overlook
how bad the football is going to be in this game.

He is what I understand putting carsson back in it
because you want to see what he can actually do.
Because Jacoby Brissett, he is a veteran guy. To me,
he is just a jag, just another guy. And then
Gardner Minshew, you know what he can do. He can
run around and make plays with his feet. But this
is an excellent opportunity to see live remps for a
guy named for God like carsson Beck because guess what,

at some point this season carssing Beck could end up
as being a card News starting quarterback. Yeah, dulas of
what Ben thinks we.
