Doing pretty well? It's uh set time a year again.

We're on the cusp of preseason football and for the
Denver Broncos, a team that has high expectations for this
football season. Uh, you know, facing off against the Atlanta Falcons,
a team that had a turnover at the coaching staff.
You got to brought in new quarterback in Tua competing
with Pennix. Who's who's been hurt? Where is this Falcons team?

(00:37):
Because from the outside looking in, this is a This
is a team that is loaded at the skill positions.
If they just get that quarterback situation nailed down, this
this team could be a juggernaut.

Speaker 4 (00:47):
Yeah, I mean it sounds easy, right. You know you
have you have Drake London, you have Kyle Pitts, and
of course you have Jeon Robinson, who is you know,
arguably the best running back in the NFL. But this
is something that this team has struggled with since Matt
Ryan left in twenty twenty two, and ironically he is

now the president of football of this team, so it's
you know, he's not an executive. It's been that long
since they've had a consistent, solid, reliable quarterback under center,
and they're hoping. They're hoping to this year, guys, I mean,
they hope to every year. But they signed to a
Tongue Bailloa and they have Michael Pennys Junior who is
still working his way back from the ACL but they're hoping,

you know that that one of these two guys is
the one that unlocks what this offense could be because
it just has not come to fruition yet.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
Well, speaking of that, as far as what this offense
could actually be, I mean, now on Kevi Sefanski now
takes over what's the kind of temperature to fill in
from the fan base on what he can actually bring
to the organization, but more employee, can he help them
win that NFC sound.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
It's a fan base, guys that is a little bit
disenchanted with how things have gone for almost a decade
now because it's been nine years since they've made the
playoffs and had a winning record, So it's been a minute.
I mean, it doesn't seem like it was that long
ago that you know, Matt Ryan and Julio Jones and
Roddy White, We're going to the super Bowl, you know,
but it has been a while now, it's been a

decade and they really have not gotten things figured out
since that team, you know, since since those guys left.
And you know, there is some hope with Kevin Stefanski,
but it's it's a little bit more of like what
you know, you got to show it to us. You know,
we can't. We're not gonna believe until you show it.
And two years ago they signed Kirk Cousins, they dropped

the tennis and there's a lot of hope here in Atlanta.
In fact, season tickets sold out before training camp for
the first time in twenty years. There was a lot
of hope, and I hate to say it, but I
feel like a lot of that hope has kind of
dissipated over the last two years because they just had
not delivered on the field.

Speaker 3 (02:56):
Tyler Mark Romondi from ESPN there in Atlanta for his
loaded as the offense appears to be, the defense has
kind of been an odd side. I think you guys
had ray Mars there for a minute thought maybe it
was gonna get fixed.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
That way you make you move on.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
This defense is obviously a work in progress, but how
far is it away?

Speaker 1 (03:15):
Really?

Speaker 4 (03:16):
You know it was it was a solid defense last year.
They did set the franchise records sacks. They fifty seven sacks,
which was impressive for a team that really historically has
not had success getting to the quarterback. They did that
fairly well, if not very well, last year. But the
problem is is that some of those guys they had
are gone now Kayden Ellis is not there, of course,

(03:37):
you guys know you know one of the Ellis brothers
real well in Denver. Caiden is no longer in Atlanta,
he's in New Orleans. David on Yamada, who was a
fixer in the middle of that line for several years
as he's gone as well. And they're relying on a
lot of players that really they they signed several defensive
players who were gonna get a lot of time, who

(03:59):
are on one year deals, and these are guys that
that have had success in the past. But they haven't
had success recently. They're they're all trying to have a
breakout year, and I guess that the gamble was like, hey,
maybe if you know two or three of these guys
have breakout seasons, this defense could could be really good
because it still has Jesse Bass right, he's one of
the best safeties in the league. Xavier Wats was one
of the best rookies last year. He had five interceptions

(04:20):
as a rookie at safety. But then there's other red
flags like James Pierce Junior, who he had ten a
half sacks as a rookie. Then he went and uh,
you know, crashed his cards to his girlfriend's car repeatedly
last February and got arrested forred tomestic violence and he's
gonna get suspended. They don't know how far how long yet,
but he will be suspended at some point. So again,
there's a lot of moving parts with this defense. And

(04:42):
Jeff Olbrick is a great defensive coordinator, so he can
there's anybody that make it work with him, but it's
a lot of moving parts.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
Well, we know that in the preseason is excellent opportunity
for a lot of young players to get some valuable
game time experience all bet in the preseason. But I've
been hearing by about well zagar Yer Branch. I mean,
what can Broncos fan expect from this young guy? I mean,
I've seen the videos him doing backflips. He's very athletic,

(05:09):
but what can Broncos fans expect when he comes into
the game.

Speaker 4 (05:13):
He he is someone that and again it's you know,
he's a rookie and it's only been two weeks of
training camp, but as you guys know, but he has
definitely shown something already. He's definitely a playmaker. He's definitely
a guy that you know. At Georgia they used him
a lot screens behind the line of scrimmage stuff. He
was kind of a gadget guy. They're they're going to
open up the routtree for him in Atlanta now, and

(05:35):
I don't know if it's going to be right away,
but they believe in him. They believe that he can
really make an impact as a rookie. He's short, he's tiny,
but he's very strong, he's very fast and two a
talking below even said he reminds him a little bit
of Jaylen Waddle. So he which again, guy that you
guys know well now, so he's a guy that they're
looking to to add to that what could be a

potent mix, you know, on offense with those skill players.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Talk with Mark Ramondi from ESPN there in Atlanta. Yeah,
branch of course, relative a clip branch as well. So
that's you know, it's always a good bit of trivia.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
I guess to Heather uh Well for looking from the
the other side of things, what is this Broncos team
viewed as from from the Atlanta side of the house.
I mean, we it gets so insular around here. You
get in the bubble. You saw this team go to
the AC Championship last year. There are legit Super Bowl
aspirations in these fan base, But from the outside looking in,
is that are the Broncos viewed as a Super Bowl contender?

Speaker 4 (06:32):
I think so? Yeah, I do, I do. I do
believe so. And and Kevin Stefanski was very complimentary of
Denver this week in practice, very commentary of Sean Payton
of course, And I think I think a lot of
people are in the league do think that Broncos have
a shot as long as bon Nix is healthy. You know,
you guys have that that fantastic defense, right, you know,
that's a that's an enviable defense that y'all have in Denver.

(06:55):
But yeah, I do, I do think that it's a
it's a team, I do. I I do think what
the Falcons. The Falcons are viewing this game as is.
And again, as we know, it's an exhibition, right, it's preseason,
but it is a chance for these guys in Atlanta
to go up against what is a one of the
better teams in the league potentially this year.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
Well, with that being said, how is it that the
organization and you yourself included looking at this game because
even though it's exhibition game, but it gives fans an
opportunity to see tour Tongua Malare who when we saw
him in Miami, he wasn't giving us his best stuff.
So what can we expect from him? And do you
look at him as maybe being the quarterback that can

(07:36):
solidify this particular position for the Atlanta Falcons.

Speaker 4 (07:40):
Well, I mean you just felt it on the head.
I mean that is what Falcons fans are going to
be looking at the most. I mean, all eyes are
going to be on Tua on Friday night. Now, he's
only going to play a series or ten plays, So
it's not going to be a large body of work,
but they're looking to see something a glimpse, a flash,
right of what he was in twenty twenty three, a
little bit in twenty twenty four before he got hurt,

(08:02):
because he was he was one of the best quarterbacks
in the league statistically, you know, those seasons when he
was available and playing. So but the Falcons would love
to have that, you know, the Falcons would love to
kind of get that Tua back from twenty twenty three
where he's leading the league in passing yards and completion
percentage and you know, all these things, and he's a
pro bowler, but he did not show that last year.

(08:25):
And and there's a look, there's a reason why Miami
ate all that cap space, he ate all that dead
money to jettison him elsewhere, right, the teams don't do
that by accident. That there's there's reasons for that. And
and that's something that again it's again it's it's a
it's a it was a small gamble for Atlanta because
they're only paying him, you know, one point three million
for one year, so it's a it's a low risk

(08:47):
type of deal and it could be a big as
he plays well this year.

Speaker 3 (08:52):
Talk Mark Rimondi from ESPNNDRE in Atlanta. You know that
division that you guys are in his interesting because last
year you had the Panthers back door their way to
the to the division win. You've got to You've got
a Tampa team that that feels like they're going to
be competitive. If you got a New Orleans team that
looks surprising. I saw some flashes from them like they
might be a little sleeper team this year.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
We'll see.

Speaker 3 (09:12):
And then of course, you know, you guys go ahead
and get Stefanski, retool the Falcons.

Speaker 1 (09:15):
It's it's actually a competitive division.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
There's some thought that maybe maybe Tampa the Wheels are
following off. This might be Todd Bowles last year. As
you look around this division, is it sort of realigning
as it's been sort of Tampa's division for the last
couple of years.

Speaker 4 (09:29):
I mean, it feels like it's wide open every year.
This division. It's it's I mean, the fans of the
teams and division know that it's not a very good
division historically, right, It's not. It's not one of the
powerhouse divisions. This is it's a division that you can
and the teams have won at eight to nine, you know,
or nine and eight. It's this is how it going.

(09:50):
It happened last year. There were three teams at eight
and nine last year, the Falcons being one of them,
but they were in third place because they lost the
tie breakers and the Pants ended up winning the division.
That could certainly happen again this year. It wouldn't be
a surprise. And I do think that I do think
that every team has improved in their own way, especially
the Saints. I think the Saints have probably improved the most,
but they were also the team that needed that needed

(10:11):
to improve the most. So it really is it could go,
I could go in any different direction. It does seem
like Tampa that that window that they had where they
were the top team in the league for several seasons,
it does seem like that window is maybe closing, but
maybe it's not completely closed yet. It just seem there's
a lot of discord going on down there right now.
And then in Atlanta you have the fresh star with
Kevin Stefanski, Ian Cunningham, the new GM Matt Ryan. You know,

(10:34):
there's there's good vibes in that way because Matt Ryan
is back with the team, and he's obviously beloved by
the fan base. So it's it's just one of those
years that you know, you start with the clean slate
and you really don't know how it's gonna go, but
it's probably gonna be very tight, and you know, we'll see,
we'll see how it goes well.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
One person who was looking for a clean slate, and
that was Michael Pennock's junior and we know coming out
of college, you know, there's knew issues, there was injury concerns,
but it just seemed like last year obviously he got injured,
he's trying to fight back and then to watch another
quarterback come in and albeit Sefanski hasn't said that, you know,
two a tongue of Vlow is going to be his starter.

(11:12):
But with panis not being able to get back on
the field from his injury coming off the ACL what
what do things look like for him as far as
his long term future with the Falcons.

Speaker 4 (11:24):
I mean, that's that remains to be seen, and that's
a great question, and that's a question that a lot
of people in Atlanta are asking right now. You know,
I he Michael Pennix has has developed a fan base
here in Atlanta, even though he's really only started twelve
games in two seasons, not even a full a full
season yet because he was behind Kirk Cousins for the
first season, and then of course he got hurt last season.

(11:45):
But he has because he because he's so gracious, you know,
because he really gives off the impression that he's that
he's a good guy. And it really seems like that's
very genuine. He has developed, you know, a fan base
here and then there are people that are rooting for
him here. But it's just, you know, when you have
three knee surgeries like he's had in the last eight seasons,

(12:06):
I mean, that's a lot. And he's still working his
way back from this one. And he said in the
spring guys that he would be ready for training camp,
that he felt confident he'd be ready for training camp,
that he'd be a full go when training camp started.
That obviously did not happen, and that is that is worrisome.
That's concerning. Doesn't mean there was a setback necessarily, it
just means, you know, a cls are not uneasy to predict.

(12:27):
You know, some some guys take longer and he's had
three of them now, so maybe that's a longer process
than a guy that maybe just had the one. So
there are so many questions around Panis and there's still
a belief that if he can be one hundred percent
and get that experience that he needs, that he can
be a good NFL quarterback. But will he get that opportunity,
will will his body allow him to do that? And

(12:48):
that's something that we just don't know, and it's, you know,
it's it's kind of it's kind of a bummer, it's
kind of it's kind of sad where things are, but
that's that's the NFL. You know, It's it's a it
can be, it can be a cruel mistress sometimes.

the Penix thy because like you, if you ever sit
down and listen to Michael Penicks and you talked to
Michael Penix, you can't help.

He's just one of those guys that it's sort of
got that energy, that charisma about him, and you can't
help it roof for I love Michael Penix.

It's Michael Penix the player and the injury history and
all that kind of stuff. That's just got the eyebrow raised.
I know, we just sort of touched on that. But
what is the what is the plan for Atlanta? If
this doesn't work, if Penix can't come in, if to
us you know, want and done and it doesn't work, Like,
what is the plan here? They scrap and everything and
starting over with this talented core at the skill positions.

That they have.

Speaker 4 (13:37):
Well, as I mentioned earlier, they did sign a lot
of these free agents on defense to one year deals,
so there is you can kind of see what the
thinking is for the future because they do have all
these guys locked up. They have London lost up, they
have Pits, they have the Sean Robinson, they have Matthew Bergernd,
who's a young left guard who's very good. They have

(13:58):
all these guys locked up on offense. Iously don't have
a quarterback yet. But even with those long term contract
extensions for for big money, right for market setting type
of type of deals, they still have a ton of
cap room for next year because everything that they did
in the offseason this past offseason was kind of setting

(14:19):
up what next year could be and and I think
that is going to be very interesting to see how
it goes, because I almost feel like this is a
now evaluation year guys for for you know, what they're doing.
It's the first year of this new regime. There's a
lot of players, I mean, the majority of the players
they were they were not acquired by this new regime.
They were not drafted by this new regime. Michael Plants included, right,

(14:39):
you know, he was drafted by you know, Rahee Mars
and Terry Fontino. So I think this is an assessment year.
Of course, they want to win. They always want to win.
You know, you don't want to you don't want to
go ten years up making the playoffs, of course, specially
if you're Arthur Blank, who's you know now is in
his eighties and he would love to win one before
you know, you know he he he gives a way.
The team's basically his his son Josh, Who's who's getting

(14:59):
groomed that position right now. But I do feel like
you can see that they're setting up for a big
offseason in twenty twenty seven and potentially drafting a quarterback
or signing a free agent if they don't think Pennis
is the guy. But here's the thing. You need Penis
to play this season at some point an extended amount
of time. You would hope to see if he is

(15:21):
the guy or not. You want to give him every
chance you can to show one way or the other.
And right now he's not healthy to do that. And
that's an under the frustration.

Speaker 3 (15:29):
