Speaker 1 (00:00):
Congratulations to the Colorado Rockies, winners of two in a row,
polishing off the Nationals 13-1. Rockies 51-81 on the season.
Nats dropped to 62-72. Home runs abounded as Cole Kerrig, Norby, Johnston,
and Hunter Goodman. all got home runs in this one. That, uh,
(00:23):
would be number 30.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
What is it? 36 for Goodman.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
36, 36 home runs for a hundred Goodman on the season.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
Um, as the Rockies handily defeated the Washington nationals, Tanner
Gordon went seven innings, only allowed six hits one run.
It was earned five K's 90 pitch count. It was
a home run on that one run. Uh, annuals came
on two innings, allowed a hit struck out to no runs. And, uh,
And what a complete performance by the Colorado Rockies.
Speaker 4 (00:53):
Yeah, it definitely was. They had like these three massive innings,
the fifth, sixth, and the eighth. I mean, excuse me,
the fifth, the seventh, and the eighth. And it seemed
like Joe Boots actually woke up. And I guess this
was a case of the Rockies giving the Nationals a
(01:14):
taste of their own medicine because to start off the series,
this is what the first game actually looked like, right?
Just swap the uniforms, but this is exactly the type
of performance that the Nationals gave the Rockies in that
first game.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Starting pitching for the Nats only went two innings, Waldron.
After that, Dion took over, and that's where things fell
apart for the Nationals. 2.2 innings pitched, four runs, four earned.
And the loss in that one. Perales came in for
two innings, wasn't any better.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Four runs, four earned.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
Beater came in for a batter. Rebalta came in for
two batters. Well, I'd say two-thirds of an inning, actually.
And he allowed four runs, four earned. And then Vivas
finished it off by allowing yet another run.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
You were right.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
It came in bunches for the Colorado Rockies. It was
1-0 Nationals until the top of the fifth. And then
you had Troy Johnston-Homer. Two-run shot, you had Carrig homered
to deep left center, and that made it 4-1. Then
you get back to the seventh. Norby homered 424 feet
to deep center, made it 8-1. And then Goodman, 457
(02:18):
to deep left center. And Norby, after that, Norby singled
to center. Moniak scored, or Moniak went to second, Reuter scored,
and Tovar singled to center. Troy Johnson, the second, Norby scored.
Moniak also scored on that one. That was the final
for the 13-1. The Rockies, again, moving to 51-81 on
(02:40):
the season. It had been a rough August for the
Rockies up until the last couple of games. This has
not exactly been their month. They did open with a
6-12 win over Kansas City and an 8-1 win over
Kansas City and then dropped four straight 1-1, dropped two straight.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
1-3, dropped one.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
1-1, and then they proceeded to just reel off, what
was it, like, was it eight? Seven losses in a
row before getting back-to-back wins here. And for a team
that was hoping it was going to be a little
bit more competitive down the stretch, a bit of a disappointment.
But the last two games have been nice as the
pitching has only allowed two runs, and they've managed to
score 16.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
Yeah, the Rockies look to kind of take this four-game
series and get three. out of the four, big game tomorrow.
And when you look at the remaining of the roster,
I mean, the remaining of the schedule, they have to
go play the Braves after this Nats series. And when
(03:41):
you look at the remaining schedule, there's 29 games remaining.
And they have 10 teams in their 29 games. Five
of those teams are below 500.
Speaker 5 (03:51):
Five of the.
Speaker 4 (03:53):
Other opponents, the Braves, Yankees, Padres, D-backs, and White Sox,
they're all above 500. So even though we know that
the Rockies are not going to hit the 80 mark
that Grant Smith once kind of hoped or tried to
kind of put out there that, postulate that the Rockies
(04:15):
would actually get to, they have an opportunity once again
to go out there and win a slew of games.
And I want to see this team actually play well
against those teams who are above That's where you get
a chance to somewhat test yourself and at least walk
away with your heads held high on a disappointing season,
(04:37):
just because from a record standpoint, but you're still trying
to avoid that dreaded.
Speaker 5 (04:43):
You know, 100 games.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
Yeah, and they've still got series against teams that are
above 500. You know, Arizona Diamondbacks, they've got a series
against the Padres. They've got a series against the Yankees still.
They've got a series against the Salos Cardinals who are
right at 500. They've got, you mentioned the Braves here
coming up. They've got an 11-0-5 first pitch game tomorrow.
(05:05):
And then the following day on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday,
a three-game stretch against at Atlanta against the 77-55 Braves.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
So you're right, there's some tough stretches ahead.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
I'm actually going to be at the Rockies game when
the Cardinals come to town. That's Sunday the 6th, so
I'm going to get a chance to watch them then.
Speaker 5 (05:22):
Okay, see him up close and personal.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
Yeah, yeah. So that'll be a lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
And it's been a decent year in terms of some
of the production for the Rockies. We mentioned the home runs.
Hunter Goodman with his 36th home run of the season.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
That is well done, Hunter Goodman.
Speaker 5 (05:38):
You know what was interesting about Hunter Goodman?
Speaker 4 (05:40):
I remember during the trade deadline, there were kind of
questions on whether the Rockies would just say, you know what,
this season.
Speaker 5 (05:48):
Is a wash.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
Hunter Goodman, he's doing well as far as home runs
are concerned. Why don't we trade a guy who is
at his pinnacle right now in the 2026 season and
see if he can recruit some draft choices.
Speaker 5 (06:02):
For Hunter Goodman.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
But I'm glad that DePodesto decided not to go in
that particular direction because in order to build something sustainable,
And be attractive to free agents, which has been really
difficult for the Rockies. You want to make sure you
kind of keep some of those in-house guys and really show, okay,
we're building towards something. If you come here to the
(06:25):
Mile High City, you have an opportunity to be a
part of something great. And that could be 2027, 2028.
But you can say that you were on the ground
floor when the Rockies turned this thing around.
Speaker 5 (06:39):
Now, for certain players.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
that may be appealing to them to know that you
have a guy like Hunter Goodman still on your roster,
but also you're playing good baseball, even though you know
that you're out of the playoff race.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Are we excited maybe about Hunter Goodman down the stretch,
possibly winning the home run crown? I mean, he's in
second in major league baseball with 36 home runs. Schwarber
is the only guy ahead of him with 39.
Speaker 5 (07:00):
Schwarber is a beast.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
He is.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
He also strikes out the most in the league.
Speaker 4 (07:04):
Having something like that, having a player, that wins a
home run derby. I mean, it's great for the player
and that player's brand, but also it's great for the
team as well because the Rockies really hadn't had anything
to cheer about as of late. You've had single game
performances or maybe a guy may go have a streak
(07:26):
or you know, over a couple of games where he's
played well and he's been consistent, but nothing of that magnitude.
I think that would be big for the city and
the team to be able to celebrate.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
Yeah, if he were able to find a way to
get the home run crown.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
That's not easy, though. I think that would go a
long way for Colorado Rockies fans.
Speaker 5 (07:47):
Yes, it will.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
I mean, he's three behind Schwarber right now. You know,
Schwarber's got 39, he's got 36.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
He's in second. He's within striking distance.
Speaker 5 (07:56):
Yeah, he's within striking distance.
Speaker 4 (07:59):
And that would be great for the Colorado Rockies to say, hey,
even though the season did not go well for us,
we have a guy who won the home run derby.
And he's not, I mean, because when you think about catchers,
people don't look at catchers in that particular way being sluggers.
But to say that you have a guy who's your
(08:19):
catcher and he can slug like that, yes. Now I'm
about to start having people talk more about the Rockies,
at least from that standpoint.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
And I say 39. Now Schwarber hit one today, so
he's at 40. So he's four behind Schwarber. But he's
in second place. It is entirely possible that Hunter Goodman
could catch him.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
And, you know, we could have that.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
I think that would be something fun down the stretch
for Rockies fans.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
We got a break.
Speaker 5 (08:42):
We come back at the.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
NFL six pack right here on Broncos country tonight.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Text line says, Ben, the best part about the 11.05 a.m.
first pitch for the Rockies tomorrow is that BCT will
be uninterrupted.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
I tend to agree. Hell yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Full show tomorrow night. I believe Steve Atwater is going
to join us in the first hour. I'm looking over
at Zach Seegers for confirmation. He is shaking his head yes.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
Plus, I think we got a surprise guest there, Nick Ferguson.
Speaker 5 (09:11):
Should we tell them? We can tell them, yeah. Well,
you just said it was a surprise.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
Well, I was letting you have the option of revealing
it or continuing the surprise.
Speaker 5 (09:18):
All right.
Speaker 4 (09:20):
Former Los Angeles Chargers receiver coach, former CU Buffs receiver coach,
and he also played for the Denver Broncos, and he
was my teammate with the New York Jets. Phil McGogan
is going to join us tomorrow to talk a little
bit about the Broncos wide receivers and what it's like
to call plays for the first time.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
Love it.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
That'll be a lot of fun, and we always love
having stuff like that, being able to share with the listeners.
Without further ado, let's do the NFL Six Pack.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
It's time for the NFL Six Pack. I'm going to
drink a lot of beer tonight.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
Insight and inside information you can't find anywhere else.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Now, the top six. NFL headlines.
Speaker 4 (10:02):
One.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
Today, the NFL announced they are getting rid of the
Pro Bowl games, though they'll still release the annual conference-based
Pro Bowl teams. What do you make of this change
and what do you hope to see included as part
of the annual celebration that they will still hold as
part of the announcement and festivities?
Speaker 1 (10:22):
Well, they're still going to do like a two deep
from each conference. And that's the thing.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
The idea here and.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
We'll get more into this, Nick, here in the next hour.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
But the idea here is that it's it's supposed to
be more prestigious. You're not winding up with alternates. They're
not doing alternates anymore. So you're not having Trevor Simeon
or Shannur Sanders, you know, sort of controversial, controversially make
the Pro Bowl by default. So there's something to that.
It's the idea is to make the Pro Bowl mean
something again. Now, not having the game sucks. You know,
(10:53):
I miss the days when they actually played actual football
and Sean Taylor was teeing off on punters.
Speaker 4 (10:57):
But.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
You know, what do I know?
Speaker 1 (11:00):
As for the rest of it, they're supposed to do
some kind of like individual events for the different position groups,
things like that. They're going to tweak this formula, but
no game, no flag football game, no nothing.
Speaker 5 (11:09):
Man, this hurts, man.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
This hurts because every kid you aspire to get to
the NFL and then you want it to be validated
by your peers and hopefully by the fans based on
what you were able to do and not knowing or
knowing that you're not going to have the Pro Bowl
anymore as it once stood. Because just think about it.
(11:33):
I think it's been around since 1951.
Speaker 5 (11:34):
It has, yep. And now it's gone.
Speaker 4 (11:39):
Is it fair to say that maybe the players of
today kind of destroyed the dream of the Pro Bowl?
Speaker 5 (11:45):
Is it fair to say that? I mean, maybe.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
I think the NFL destroyed it by taking it out
of Hawaii. Like, if you really want to talk about it,
I think that was the Jenga block being taken out
that really destroyed things. Because people wanted to go to Hawaii.
It's a free paid vacation to Hawaii.
Speaker 5 (12:03):
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
You bring this family.
Speaker 5 (12:05):
No, no, it's not. Big misconception.
Speaker 4 (12:07):
It's not as free as you think it is.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
Okay, well, still, the destination is Hawaii. You're going there.
You can justify, hey, let's bring the family. Let's bring
the kids. they never held it there that would have
been great too the places they decided to hold it
like orlando like uh las vegas i don't think uh
offer the same appeal as hawaii.
Speaker 4 (12:28):
Well i know miami does and that's my hometown it
offers a lot of they should have held it there
that's what i'm saying just just offer it.
Speaker 3 (12:36):
In places play it in places players want to go
to i think part of the whole hawaii lure too
was It's kind of hard to get to. It's a
place not everyone goes to, whereas, you know, Florida, you
can get that three-hour.
Speaker 5 (12:47):
Plane flight from Garnier anywhere in the country.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
But I think that made it something special people wanted
to go to. Once you started moving it out of Hawaii,
I think you saw more and more players opt out.
Speaker 5 (12:57):
But here's the other thing, too, as well.
Speaker 4 (12:58):
It wasn't just that, but also the value of play
that we saw.
Speaker 5 (13:03):
Remember how quickly it turned? from tackle football to.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
I'm not really going to make an attempt to tackle
this guy. That was like, what is this? I don't
want to watch this. That's where I say the players
part of it also didn't help.
Speaker 1 (13:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (13:17):
Two.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
Michael Penix Jr. still has not been cleared for preseason
action ahead of the Atlanta Falcons final preseason game. And
yet Kevin Stefanski still hasn't named a starting quarterback for
week one. What does that say about the state of
the Falcons quarterback room? And when all is said and done,
how many games is Tua going to start? How many
(13:40):
is Michael Penix going to start? And how many will
the undrafted free agent rookie sensation Jack Strand start?
Speaker 4 (13:47):
Well, I thought it was said that Michael Penix was
cleared to participate in practice. So now is the the
words is changing. The narrative is changing.
Speaker 5 (13:57):
All I know... Practice, not preseason action.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
We're talking about practice, not a game.
Speaker 5 (14:01):
Practice.
Speaker 4 (14:01):
But still, at the same time, you're still talking about
a guy who's had a bevy of knee, lower body injuries,
did not or would not have played in the preseason,
and you're trying to push him out there for the
regular season. I don't know how that's going to help him,
but if you're talking about.
Speaker 5 (14:16):
A guy who seemed to be.
Speaker 4 (14:18):
on his last doorstep with the Falcons, he may just
have received great news because he could be the starting
quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons until Penix actually can come.
Speaker 5 (14:30):
Back and return. but also shown that he can stay healthy.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
Yeah, Tua has been an unmitigated disaster thus far for
the Falcons. If Penix comes back and if he's able
to go, he'll be the week one starter.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
If not, it'll be Tua.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
Until then, Jack Strand will not start a game, and
I suspect that the Falcons will also acquire Dylan Gabriel
here very soon from the Cleveland Browns.
Speaker 5 (14:51):
You still panhandling that one, huh? You pushing that one?
Speaker 1 (14:55):
I think there's going to be several quarterbacks changing teams
in the next couple weeks.
Speaker 4 (14:58):
If Dylan Gabriel ends up with the Falcons... But that
would also say, let me put on my 10-4 hat, right,
that whatever was happening last year where Shador was not
receiving any starting reps at all, that would play right
into the hands of so many people.
Speaker 5 (15:15):
I'm just saying. I'm just saying.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
I think more than one quarterback is going to change
teams here in the next couple weeks.
Speaker 5 (15:20):
I think I believe it.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
You look at that Browns quarterback room, and they just
drafted Talon Green. Even if he's not a quarterback, that's
a fun— project you might want to develop it seems
like Shador and Deshaun Watson have always been the leaders
in the clubhouse for that starting quarterback job if you
know they did what some people were calling for after
that press conference and cut Deshaun Watson and ate the
dead cap which I know they were never going to
(15:42):
do but if they had done that then maybe they
keep doing Gabriel but as it stands right now too
many guys in that room seems like Gabriel's the odd
man out might as well try and flip him for something.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
And leverage for the Browns only increases as Michael Penix
hasn't taken any snaps in a game situation yet.
Speaker 3 (16:01):
OBJ went viral this week for an impressive one-handed snag
he made at Giants training camp practice that said oh
also I'll mention Calvin Austin projected to be a top
three receiver on that Giants roster now out for the
season with an ACL tear do you think you know
we could see OBJ have a comeback season here in
(16:23):
2026 and if not him do you think we'll see
Malik neighbors bounce back to his rookie year and early
second season elite form prior to his terrible injury.
Speaker 4 (16:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (16:34):
You know, I mean, Odell hasn't really done anything since
2023 in Baltimore.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
And it wasn't all that much.
Speaker 1 (16:43):
He had 35 catches, 565, three touchdowns. The last time
Odell Beckham had a thousand yard season was 2019 when
he was with the Browns. Last time he had a
double digit touchdown season was 2016, 10 years ago. So,
you know, I don't know. I mean, he's got some
work to do. I mean, he probably makes that five that,
you know, on the depth chart there. He's not ahead
(17:03):
of neighbors, Slayton, Mooney. Of course, they drafted Malachi Fields. So,
you know, I don't know that he's in that fifth
or sixth slot there. Now, as far as Malik neighbors goes,
big bounce back season. Look for him to be huge
this year. He's almost ready to go. All these reports
about him not being ready to go.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
Absolute malarkey. He's just about ready to go.
Speaker 4 (17:21):
Well, it's not about how you start. It's about how
you finish. And if you listen to Coach Harbaugh, who
was praising, and a guy like OBJ saying, hey, listen,
he's had a good camp so far, and he saved
his best for last. Like, this week at camp, you
mentioned a one-hand grab. These are the things that we
are so used to seeing OBJ do. And oh, by
(17:43):
the way, cuts are going to start taking place on Sunday.
He's doing it like in the final week of preseason.
Would you rather start.
The summer camp and training camp well and fizzled out
towards the end. It seemed as though Odell Beckham Jr.
's stock is rising at the right time. We still
have to see if it's going to be enough to
(18:03):
keep him on the 53-man roster.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
Interesting, odd, kind of funky coincidence here. Odell Beckham, member
of the 2014 draft class, reuniting with his old former
team this year, the team that drafted him. Aaron Donald,
member of the 2014 draft class, might be reuniting with
the team that drafted him this year. Jadeveon Clowney, number
one overall pick in the 2014 draft class. Just a
(18:26):
week or so ago, reunited with the team that drafted
him back in 2014 that he hasn't been with in
a long time. Bizarre situation.
Speaker 4 (18:32):
So what you're saying, what is O, has now become new.
Speaker 5 (18:36):
In a sense.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
Bradley Roby, come on down.
Speaker 2 (18:42):
Three, four.
Speaker 3 (18:47):
Lamar Jackson told the media today that his decreased number
of runs last year was merely a product of injuries
and not a strategic choice. With that in mind, will
we see Lamar run more in 2026 or was last
season a sign of things to come? And will we
see a new version of Lamar in Declan Doyle's offense?
Speaker 4 (19:07):
I say we will see a new version because Declan
Doyle had a quarterback in Caleb Williams in Chicago. even
though Ben Johnson was pretty much calling the plays, but
you have two guys with similar skill set. And he's
probably going to tell Lamar, hey, listen, when the pocket
breaks down, yeah, I want you to use your legs
to extend the play first.
Speaker 5 (19:27):
And if there's plays down the field, throw it down
the field.
Speaker 4 (19:30):
But we have this monster in the backfield by the
name of Derrick Henry.
Speaker 5 (19:33):
Hand the ball off to him. Let him take all
those bumps and bruises.
Speaker 4 (19:38):
We want to make sure that we maintain a certain
level of health because Declan Doyle knows that, hey, what
he's looking at is a potential head coaching job two
years from now, and he needs both Derrick Henry and
Lamar Jackson to get him to that pinnacle. So we
could see possibly the best version of Lamar Jackson this season.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
Yeah, we could. It's interesting because we don't know what
we're going to get out of the Declan Doyle offense.
We really don't.
Speaker 1 (20:02):
So that's something that I'm kind of interested to see
what that looks like. You know, I do suspect we'll
see more running. But, you know, as guys go on
in their careers, those quarterbacks that start off running a
bunch early in their.
Speaker 3 (20:13):
Careers tend not to do that later.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
They tend to take, you know, it tends to be
less and less as you go along as they start
to realize that, hey, throwing the ball, I take fewer hits.
Speaker 5 (20:22):
Well, I guess.
Speaker 4 (20:23):
Josh Allen hasn't learned that lesson, but Joe Burrow has.
Speaker 2 (20:26):
Joe Burrow has very much learned that lesson.
Speaker 4 (20:28):
Okay, in Joe Burrow defense, his offensive line hasn't really
been that great, so he's been.
Speaker 5 (20:33):
Forced to run.
Speaker 1 (20:34):
That might be the nicest thing that's been said about
the Cincinnati Bengals offensive line.
Speaker 2 (20:37):
They haven't been that great.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
By the way, other players from the 2014 draft that
may or may not reunite with it, now they're not.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
Shelby Harris not going to reunite with the Raiders?
Speaker 1 (20:46):
No.
Speaker 4 (20:47):
No?
Speaker 3 (20:47):
No, he's with the Giants, right?
Speaker 2 (20:48):
I know, but I'm just making jokes.
Speaker 5 (20:50):
They'd be nice. Just saying.
Speaker 1 (20:52):
There aren't that many players playing from that draft class,
and he's still one of them.
Speaker 5 (20:56):
Shout out to him.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
That in and of itself is a pretty impressive career accomplishment.
Speaker 4 (21:01):
Yep.
Speaker 5 (21:02):
Five.
Speaker 3 (21:05):
The offseason version of Hard Knocks is primed to return
in 2027 with the series now following an entire division
throughout the NFL offseason.
Speaker 2 (21:14):
Other than the.
Speaker 3 (21:14):
AFC West, which division would you most like to see
depicted and which Are you worried about this version being
watered down at all after that Joe Shane disaster from
the first iteration?
Speaker 1 (21:24):
I'm always worried about being watered down because they do
water hard knocks down. In fact, I hadn't even watched
it over the last couple of years, although there's been
a couple here or there that have been a little
bit better.
Speaker 2 (21:34):
The Seahawks win it's net bad. I just, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
What division would i want to see i don't know
the nfc east um the uh the nfc south for
obviously for different reasons the nfc east i think is
going to be strong the south is going to be
bad and i'm here for the chaos.
Speaker 4 (21:52):
Well i would i would think the nfc south because
like bless you trying to figure out who's going to
win that division is going to be really interesting Obviously,
Tyler Shuck has definitely turned a corner. And, I mean,
you've got to like what Kellen Moore is doing down there.
But the biggest thing is putting cameras in the Falcons
facility with Kevin Stefanski, trying to figure out what that
(22:15):
quarterback carousel is going to look like.
Speaker 5 (22:17):
And also in Tampa Bay with a.
Speaker 4 (22:20):
Guy who's on a revenge tour, Baker Mayfield.
Speaker 5 (22:23):
Wouldn't that be.
Speaker 4 (22:24):
Must-see TV to see exactly how that happens?
Speaker 2 (22:27):
For being not on a revenge tour.
Speaker 5 (22:30):
To be honest.
Speaker 2 (22:32):
I love Baker Mayfield, but when is he not on a, a.
Speaker 4 (22:34):
But that's the great thing about him. He's always angry.
But when you, when you get an angry Baker, guess
what you get? The Hulk. Yes.
Speaker 5 (22:41):
And you get a.
Speaker 2 (22:43):
Great brand of football, right?
Speaker 4 (22:44):
You get a great brand of football. Tell me that's not,
is that not what hard knocks is supposed to be?
Speaker 3 (22:49):
I think that'd be a great one. The one that
jumps out to be NFC West. You get, to watch
the arms race of those three elite teams, and then
the Cardinals are in the midst of a rebuild right now.
NFC North, too. I mean, Ben Johnson's just a bit
of a psychopath and gives you a lot of good entertainment.
Speaker 1 (23:02):
I'd like to go back to the NFC West real quick.
When are the Cardinals not in the middle of a rebuild?
Speaker 4 (23:08):
True.
Speaker 3 (23:09):
I'm not saying anything. It's not a novel concept for them,
but it's interesting insight into that side of things.
Speaker 5 (23:14):
But here's the thing. The question is, do you think
it's going to change?
Speaker 4 (23:18):
That's the biggest thing, and the answer to that question
is no.
Speaker 3 (23:21):
Not until the bid will sell the team. The NFL
and NFLPA announced a greater emphasis on the enforcement of
five safety-focused rules, those being the hip drop tackle, the
horse collar tackle, launching into another player, a hit on
a defenseless player, and the blindside block. Players who commit
(23:43):
any of these violations, a combined total of three times
in a single season, will be suspended for one game,
along with other financial penalties for infractions. What do you
make of this new point of emphasis and do you
think it will have a meaningful impact on player safety?
Speaker 4 (23:59):
It always has a meaningful impact because the threat of
losing time and paychecks it does factor into players and
how they play the game. But when you look at
some of what the penalties are, the hip drop tackle,
the horse collar tackle, launching, you see a lot of
that in the collegiate game, but not so much in
the NFL game. But the defenseless player, man, for me, quarterbacks, man,
(24:22):
you sell your guy out, man.
Speaker 5 (24:23):
It's not my fault.
Speaker 4 (24:24):
But the blindside block, because I'm a defensive player, I
want to make sure that that call is called more
frequently because, man, defensive players get smashed on so many
times because of that yeah.
Speaker 1 (24:35):
Um we're going to talk about this a little bit
more in the in the next hour nick.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
But some of this stuff um.
Speaker 1 (24:42):
The the the cumulative over the course of your career
it's not like three penalties in a season it's three
penalties over the course of your career and and i
think there are.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
Some fascinating things that could.
Speaker 1 (24:52):
Come out of this that are gonna have to be
tightened up you know like what if what if a
player hits free agency with two Two strikes on him.
You're going to pay him less. You're going to avoid
that player. You're going to avoid signing that guy because
he's got two strikes on him.
Speaker 2 (25:02):
He might get suspended. There are team fines if you
get multiple penalties like that. Is a team going to
take that chance knowing they might have to pay a
million-dollar fine? Coaches might have to go to meetings with
the league.
Speaker 5 (25:12):
It seems like the NFLPA is going to have to
get involved with this one.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
Well, they were involved with it. I think they're going
to have to get re-involved with this one.
Speaker 4 (25:17):
Yes.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
We'll have to see how that goes. Broncos country tonight.
Got to get a break. We'll be back right after this.
