Speaker 1 (00:00):
I am Brandon, Chris Saal got Nick Ferguson here with me,
and I'm going to be with you all tomorrow six
to seven thirty before the Rockies take on show Hey
Tani and the Dodgers. Nick and I both shaken our
head when we heard in the in the news update
show Hey Tani, fifty and fifty. I remember when jose
N Sake I went forty forty and that was amazing.
(00:20):
So I'll probably talk about that a little bit tomorrow
leading into that game, but right now we are talking
Broncos and Bucks. We're here at SAM Number three and
Glendale like KOI Sports is every single Thursday, and then
when the schedule allows, which is most Thursdays, Broncos Country
to Night here as well, and we're pleased to go
to the KOA Common Spirit health hotline and bring on
(00:41):
former NFL kicker now a big part of what they
do at the eight one to three TV, which is
the premiere content source all things Bucks. Then his dad
grabbed himself a Super Bowl ring a couple of years
ago when he took Tom Brady.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
He took Tom Brady. He dragged Tom Brady along.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
To a Super Bowl. That's Bruce arians of course, but
Jake arians nice enough to join us. Jacob speak and Nick,
I guess the first things first, does your dad is
he want those people because that.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
Ring his bonkers?
Speaker 1 (01:11):
Does he wear it often or does it just kind
of sit there? And then he'll bust it out for
good you know, you know, big occasions.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Hey, what's up, guys, thanks for having me. No, he
it's crazy and big and wild as that thing is,
it's actually wearable. And then he is he is renowned
for handing it over and just letting people pack it around.
We were Virginia Tech a couple years ago. He went
in the Hall of Fame and he handed to somebody
in the stands. The next thing I know, it's fifty
rows up and he personally take his pelopies with the
Super Bowl, and he was just happy to tell him
(01:41):
that was the case. And he already did all the
cheerleaders and everybody else already take a picture with it
on the field. So now he's he loves wearing it
and he'll be happy to pass it around.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Yeah, just make sure he doesn't hand it to Vladimir.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Putin or like Bob Kraft. That'll have to call it
the ring ring.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
Company, Jostin's or daud whatever Beverly Hills did the Nuggets
ring in and ask for new one. So looking at
this game, it's easy to understand why the Broncos are
an underdog with with what the Bucks have done in
the first first two games, we know how talented they are.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
On both sides of the ball. But I guess I'll
start with, if you know, if they don't have Vava,
what does that change?
Speaker 1 (02:17):
What's a really good defense who also doesn't have our
pal Shack Beartt who decided you know, I mean he
was going to Miami anyway, but decided to walk away,
So you don't have.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
That same you know, impact off the edge.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
That was what Shaq was a couple of years ago.
And certainly with v Deva is in the middle. So
how does the defense change with no v Devah?
Speaker 3 (02:37):
I think he's changes a ton of what you do
against the run. I mean, Todd Bowles is always going
to stop the run first, bring the exotic blitzes. Next,
would Vita's a nose tackle that can really play three downs.
I think the bigger loss of dantewa one winfield junior,
who is really that piece that gives them that exotic
look without him to change personnel, they have other guys
they could play for him. But Antonoine could play in
the back. He can blitz, he could play in the
(02:57):
box against the run, he could play nickel. He does
so much stuff. I think he's gonna be out again,
the kind of banged up. I mean, if you're gonna
be the Broncos and trying to get something going on offense,
it's really a good time to kind of catch this defense.
But you're still playing a rookie quarterback against the Todd
Bulls defense, which makes it tough. But the lost of Vitoves,
massive lost avantel On Winter Junior is just as big.
It's got bigger.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
So for me, one of the stat lines that kind
of stuck out for me going back to the game
last week against Detroit was the number of exachs given
up by the Tampa Bay offensive line, And it seems
to me that that may be an opportunity where the
Broncos can exploit them.
Speaker 5 (03:34):
Have you seen other avenues.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
Where the Broncos could possibly exploit the offense for the
Timpa Bay Buccaneers.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Yeah, I think that's one of the biggest things that
lou Geticky played so good at right tackle last year.
He was out last week and they just had a
field day coming off Dad touches him was just everywhere,
and it was really just over that right tackle position.
I think if they have Geticky's out, it's definitely something
they've got to address. Whether you're gonna ad next to
tight end over there Chip try to stop that pass
rush and give him some help. If Getticky's back, then
(04:06):
I think you have one of the top five best
offensive lines in the league, and I'm not sure you
can exploit it the same way. But if he's out,
it's something they definitely have to look at. Because Hutchinson
just ran wild last week and I think he had
quarter to a half himself. Something they have to look at definitely.
And at Dak Bronco's defense is what's going to carry them.
They've been really good. Patchertan, one of my favorite players
in the league, is an absolute monster. I think that's
(04:27):
something they have to try to do it. Maybe you
bring some exotic stuff off of that side and tie
that tackle up and you'll bring somebody off the slide.
Those set of things. It'd be interesting to see what
they do, but I think that's one thing that they
have to try to exploit it. Gettick you out.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Yeah, and you mentioned Pats Tartan and we're talking with
Jake arians giving us a lowdown on the Bucks. DS
two traveled with DK metcalf in week one. He was
on George Pickens a fair amount. I guess I don't
have to snap break down in front of me. Nikki
you may have charted that, but George Pickens isn't DK,
and he's certainly not in Mike Evans. And I asked
Pso just to they actually on the podium in his
(05:02):
pressco yesterday rather about Mike Evans, because he's one of
those guys that.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
I guess I has Sean that today.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
I was like, you don't talk about him with the
top receivers, right, you talk about Tyreek, you talk about
Justin Jefferson.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
He's not at the top of the list.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
And he said that both Davante and Mike Evans have
just done it for so long. I mean ten straight
thousand yard seasons. Nick, you played in the league long time,
and Jake, you've been around it forever. I think Mike
Evans might be the most underappreciated player.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Of this era.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
Probably between Labonte David and Mike Evans, they might have
two of the most underrated Hall of Fame players in
the last twenty years. I mean, Mike just puts up
numbers and maybe the best year he's ever had his
career last year starts off the exact same way this year.
I mean, Patrick Kann's going to cover and be Patrick
Peterson as prime those first five or six years we
were in Arizona, Like, you're shutting down that guy. So
(05:51):
whether you've got to move Mike around, I think that's
one of the reasons. Chris Goblin eight last week was
maybe it's great having that Batman and Robin that that
number two punching Chris Godwin, who's so tough to cover
out of the slot. Is Mike's outside pretty much an
outside exclusive guy, but you got to throw Levonte David
in there. And while we're talking about under radio guys,
I mean the guy is Luke Keickley with none of
(06:12):
the hepe that Luke Keickley got, who's done it for
longer now. But Mike Evans, absolute superstar, deserves to be
in a conversation with all those guys. He's one of
those guys too. Whether Pat has perfect coverage on him
or not, he can still make that catch. When you're
six five with that radius, with those kind of hands,
it doesn't take much of a window. And Baker has
so much confidence in him, especially in the red zone,
to throw stuff up. It might be perfect coverage one
(06:33):
on one, it might still come down with a catch.
Speaker 4 (06:36):
Jake, what's your personal evaluation of bow Nicks leading into
Week three? And the reason I asked that because I
know there was a lot of expectations with Bo being
drafted in the first round by the Denver Broncos, because.
Speaker 5 (06:48):
This fan base has been thirsty not just.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
For playoffs, for a super Bowl and a quarterback that
they can call their own from a future standpoint. But
what are some of the things that you've probably seen
from bow Nicks pro con so far this season?
Speaker 3 (07:03):
I love before the season started, I'll start with this.
I love bo leaving Auburn and all the expectations that
dad playing there and being from Birmingham, all those things.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
I live in Birmingham for a long time.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
I get the hype, and then going to Oregon under
the radar. He's extremely accurate. I love the fact that
he had sixty one starts or whatever it was. I
love quarterback and head coach continuity, but when you're going
into your third game, it's hard to have that. They're
going to develop that. I think Bo's the perfect guy
for Sean. Go to the ball, go with the ball
where Sean wanted to go, where the players developed is
(07:34):
supposed to go, and be accurate with the football. I
think he has all of that stuff. The game should
start slowing down in weeks to come. It's not a
great week for him going into a Todd Bowles defense,
which seem very exotic, and you get stuff coming from everywhere.
What I haven't seen from bow On the negative side
yet in Week one to week two is a lot
of drop back, throw the ball to your first read
where it's supposed to go, where the play is designed
(07:56):
to go.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
It hasn't really been there.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
It doesn't seem like there's a lot of stuff on time. Well,
you're throwing that slant at Michael Thomas, Drew Brees and
that Sean Payton offfense that didn't seen that yet. I
think they'll get to that, and I think Bo has
all the ability to do that. It's super smart toughest
hell plenty athletics got the team run around extremely accurate
with the football, but that things have to be on time,
the running game has to be on point, and things
(08:19):
just seem to be off a little bit the first
two weeks of that offense. And I think some of
that is the rookie quarterbacks. Some of that's the pressure
is getting some of that a little bit black at
the run game and some of that. Who played pretty
good team so far. I wouldn't say to see which
offense was great, but that defense is pretty damn good.
They throw some exotic stuff in there. You've got t J.
Watt Blist, and I think he's seen a lot the
first three or four weeks. But I really like both
(08:40):
sootball I think for the fan base, and I go
back to being you know, my dad was running back
coach for Christian McCoy back in the day, and I
was playing John l Wait twice a year in the
damn Division and I hated that son of a gun
for him because he was so freaking good. And then
you get to Peyton Manning with the Super Bowls. I mean,
I love that the fan base wants that next quarterback.
I think they have it, I really do. I think
it's just you got to be a little bit patient.
(09:01):
I mean, these guys come in the league, and you've
seen Stroud, some of these guys come in and light
it up. It is really really hard. You look around
the league. Jaye Daniels has been okay so far, Caleb
william is really struggling. It's just a really hard thing
to do for go for and the preseason is so
lim there now. Guys, when we played four full preseason games,
guys played a ton. Guys will play three quarters of
a game before they ever got to Week one. They'll
(09:22):
barely playing anymore.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
Now.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Both played some of the preseason, but you still don't
get a lot of it, and I think they think
it's one of those things that's going to be at
work in progress.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
Well, and to add to that, almost been too much
time on preparation but practice time, right, you're talking about
two a days back in the day, three A days,
all of that, but you're just on the field more,
let alone more preseason games and more time to just
develop on the field.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
I understand why they've.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
Moved on from it and things change and everyone is
now playing by these same rules. But it feels like
we'll be able to identify Andrew Luck and CJ. Stroud
in a handful of rookie qbs that come in like gangbusters,
because it'll be a short list. So Jake, to that end,
I want to ask him for talking to Jake arians
getting the lowdown on everything Tampa here on Broncos Country
tonight on the other side of the ball, and you
(10:07):
talk about coach quarterback continuity. Baker Mayfield certainly came in
with we understand the acclaim and the Browns taking number one.
We saw the early success and then the struggles and
now the resurgence. Tampa felt like the perfect place for
him a couple of years ago, if you'd have gone
back Tom up.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
And been ready to be the heir apparent. But now
you see where he is, and.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
Todd Bowles kind of got a raw deal with the
Jets and because he's there with your dad and the
situation worked out the way it did, and Todd gets
a second opportunity, which Nick, we certainly know and then
you do too, Jake. We don't see African American head
coaches that get as many second chances as their white counterparts.
At just the facts and to see what Todd Bowles
(10:46):
is doing, even if he's got different OS's calling the plays,
it's fun to see. I have to think what Baker
is doing right now as an MVP candidate, and especially
at half the price of some of.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
The top qbs, it's spectacular.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
We love Baker coming out.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
My dad was always a fan, really wanted to get
in there when Tom was done. Couldn't be happier with
what he did last year, especially on the chief He
bet on himself and then he got the contract. But
the contract is still super beneficial to the Cap and
the Bucks moving forward, and they could be happier for Todd.
I mean, the only NFC team in the NFL to
go to the playoffs the last four years and win
the division the last three is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
(11:24):
So for my dad, when he stepped down, it was
the perfect time to be able to give that to
Todd to his guys with a team that he thought
could still be super competitive whin the division wins the
playoff games to make a run, which we've seen do.
I think Todd's got a hell of the job, but
couldn't be happier for Baker. I think They're really the
big thing for any team playing the Bucks right now
is Baker as a swag back. He's that guy in
(11:45):
college that you saw running down the sideline that Oklahoma
just you know, pumping the arms, playing the flag at
Ohio State, that Exeter swag. They kind of gave him
that chip on his shoulder, became bigger than life, and
he just to try to play Their injuries in Cleveland
we saw and well by the way we saw Sam
Darnold's doing that, like that situation in Carolina, they had
both of them.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
Yeah, that's how.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
Bad the situation in Carolina was thither one of them
to do crack and they both look like game busters
right now. What couldn't be happier for Baker Man, great guy.
I think the city of Pampa is a perfect place
for him. It's the perfect small market for him. The
guys have rallied around him. He is the leader of
that locker room, of that franchise right now. They believe
in him. I think that's the biggest thing. Last week,
as you look at the numbers, Detroit really handled that game,
(12:28):
but they kind of beat themselves. But the bus believed
in Baker and whined that kind of game on the
road after losing the playoffs, the five starters out, those
kind of things. You guys know that just it takes
you so far.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
This team really.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
Believes in themselves and they really believe in their leader
of best, Baker Mayfield.
Speaker 1 (12:44):
Well, Jake, we really appreciate all the insight and unlike
the time I had your dad on the radio when
he was doing TV at CBS in between coaching and
he dropped a couple of s bombs live. Appreciate you
being the broadcast professional that you are limiting that, and
our bosses and the FCC appreciate it too. But at
Jake b Arians on Twitter, great stuff, Jake, and maybe
(13:07):
we'll see a Sunday. I'll be down there in Tampa
and so I'll look for you. But thank you so
much for joining us here on Broncos Country tonight.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
Hey time, Gras, thanks for having me.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
That was Jake Arians again at Jake b Arians. You
can also check out the Arians Family Foundation at Ariansfamilyfoundation
dot com.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
They obviously do a lot of really great charity work there.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
But his dad is one on one and not how
much you've been around VA, but he is tripped man.
Speaker 4 (13:33):
You know, I've never been around him, but I've seen
a lot of documentaries about him. And one thing Kay
that stands out about coach Bruce arians is that he
has several opportunities to be a hey.
Speaker 5 (13:46):
Coach in the league.
Speaker 4 (13:47):
And when you sit in those interviews, those owners want
you to tell them what they want to hear. And
Bruce is a straightforward guy. I'm gonna tell you the
way that I see it. And he didn't really jail
with a lot of individuals, but he made the most
out of his opportunities.
Speaker 5 (14:02):
And I can I can tell.
Speaker 4 (14:03):
You being around Georgia Lurry at Georgia Tech, being around
Bill Parcels with the New York Jets. For me, I
like individuals who are going to tell me what it is.
Don't sugarcoat it, don't blow smoke, tell me what it
is so I know exactly where I stand. And bus
Area seems like he's that type of guy.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
And final thing on NBA before we take another time out.
When he took over in Tampa.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
He was I think intentional.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
I mean, Todd Bowles had been with him before, but
Arizona he was the only coach that he had with
Byron left, which as is OC and Jonna blank On
who the special teams coordinator was, But he.
Speaker 5 (14:45):
Had Keith Ormstrong.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
Oh there he got.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
So he had three three African American coordinators, which knows
that most teams don't have to like right, we know
the map, especially with the limitations on the lack of
black play callers in the league, in that hole, that
whole plight. So we're gonna get into the nuts and
bolts of this game though before we step aside for
Buffs Primetime, because Jake said something interesting and I know
(15:08):
you were already kind of kind of go there as
far as what you think could help the Broncos go
in and steal a win.
Speaker 2 (15:14):
They're the underdogs. It's a two and oh team against No.
And two team.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
But we will get into all that, so don't go anywhere.
We are live at Sam's Number three in Glendale.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
He is Nick Ferguson.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
I'm Brandon chrysl infore Benjamin all Bright on Broncos Country
tonight and listening to KOA fifteen and ninety four one FM,
Coach Prime and Bus Prime Time. Coming up here at
eight o'clock. They got a big one. They're Big twelve
opener as a I say product a child of the
Big Twelve. My freshman year of college was the first
year of the Big twelve. And even though I grew
(15:44):
up a big Longhorns fan in Dallas, my whole family
went there.
Speaker 2 (15:47):
Nick.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
I picked the KU because I knew that I wanted
to do this, and I knew I get to cover
games back in Texas, So it was always awesome coming
out the Boulder. And then of course when I moved here,
O six get to cover. You'd be out here if
ou Texa. You know, just teams that I knew, and
I understood the Pac twelve move. But it's great that,
even in a reworked conference alignment world that we're in,
(16:09):
that Colorado was back in the Big twelve. And so
they get the Baylor Bears on Saturday, and we'll hear
Coach Prime's preview on all of that.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
But he's Nick Ferguson.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
I'm Brandon christall in for Benjamin Albright here and Tea's
before we went to break about something that you had said.
Speaker 2 (16:25):
To me at the end of last hour.
Speaker 1 (16:27):
You know, so you know you have an idea of
why the Broncos can go to Tampa and win what
they can key in on to go steal a win
from the Bucks.
Speaker 4 (16:39):
Well, for me, it's going to be based on a
defense that Todd Bows kind of toss out there against
the Broncos.
Speaker 5 (16:46):
Jake Aaron's kind.
Speaker 4 (16:47):
Of mentioned the fact that Todd has a very exotic
way of doing things, but he also mentioned that there are.
Speaker 5 (16:54):
Some injuries in the secondary and.
Speaker 4 (16:58):
His injuries to with one of the better states is
in the league right now, it makes things really difficult
for the Bucks to be able to defend.
Speaker 5 (17:05):
And if you go back and watch that Detroit Lions.
Speaker 4 (17:07):
Game, there were some things that the Detroit Lions actually
took advantage of, which kind of plays into what we
were talking about earlier in the show. When it went
back we were talking about male Kuyper.
Speaker 5 (17:17):
And wanting to get covered too. Out Tampa Bay.
Speaker 4 (17:20):
They run cover too, I mean, that's always been a
staple of their defense when Money Kimfrin was there. But
they still run it. But it presents issues where or
situations rather where the Broncos can exploit if you have
the right complimentary routes being run.
Speaker 5 (17:38):
By the Broncos.
Speaker 4 (17:39):
And so far, the only shots we've seen two shots
down the field this season. One was intended for Marvin
Mamms was a little overthrown. The other was off of
a trick play to Josh Rentals. So there are opportunities
for the Broncos to take advantage of routes down the field.
(17:59):
And I don't two, but for me exposed to plays
start at ten yards and beyond, and we have not
really seen the Broncos attack the middle.
Speaker 5 (18:10):
Of the field like they can.
Speaker 4 (18:12):
And for me, that's an area that you can exploit
with your tight ends. Now as a significant ball, yes,
as I say that, yes you have to catch the ball.
So these are areas where the Broncos can actually find
a way to put the Bucks defense on their ears.
When guys are open, you have to catch those receptions
(18:34):
because that is what you're getting paid to do. And
when you're catching those receptions, now you keep it in
second amengible.
Speaker 2 (18:42):
Well, and you talk about second and manageable.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
And you brought up Bill Parcells. We know Sean Payton
often brings a Bill Parcells. You we're lucky enough to
play for Bill Parcells. He brought you into the league
right as I got the story right, and I remember
hearing Bill Parcells either say this or getting this from
one of his many disciples.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
But the Bill Parcels was all about, and.
Speaker 1 (19:03):
This is all football now, but managing the down in distance,
and so he had no problem throwing kind of short
on first down, so that second down, you're all of
a sudden second and six, second and five.
Speaker 2 (19:13):
And that could see it much more easily.
Speaker 1 (19:15):
You've got run and passed even open on second down,
but then you're at third manageable, and Sean Payton did
bring that up and they got for both games. So
certainly after the game of the day, it's hard to
really get anything going, including the run game, when you're
in third and long the whole time, and they've been
in third and eight or longer.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
It feels like most.
Speaker 1 (19:30):
Of most of the most of the time they've had
the football, and for those of us around here in
Broncos County, feels like they've been third in third and
long since Baide Manning walked off the football field in
Super Bowl fifty mostly. And so you're looking at a
ninth straight year where they just live in third and long.
But you are right, and you talk about the vulnerability
in the middle of the field, especially by taking away
a first team All Pro safety if Antoine Winfield can't go,
(19:51):
and I guess I didn't really realize.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
How banged up they were.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
But if he can't go, Rashad White is limited in
practice for a second straight day.
Speaker 2 (19:59):
He's a pretty dynamic and then Vitevea up the front.
The right tackle who.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
Is j Aaron Solis is one of the best right
tackles in football, and he's right and that's why Hutchinson
had three first quartersacks. But there's gonna be some vulnerabilities.
I guess the question is, and we've heard plenty of
people that are critical of oo Nicks's arm strength, do
you think bow Knicks will attack that middle of the field,
because that's also sometimes the most dangerous part of the
(20:24):
field because linebackers are dropping, the safeties are coming. I
say dangerous not to the ball, to the ball catcher,
the receiver, but also to the quarterback because there's just
more people. When you throw outside, there's just less people.
If you throw deep, there's less people. You throw it short.
You throw in the middle, it's the most crowded and
you've got an entire d line in front of you
that can also get their hand on the ball.
Speaker 5 (20:44):
But that all.
Speaker 4 (20:44):
Depends on how the routes are on layer because if
you have a quarterback, and not to say that bow
is struggling to pick up the.
Speaker 5 (20:52):
System, but to make things easier.
Speaker 4 (20:54):
For a rookie quarterback or veteran quarterback, you put.
Speaker 5 (20:57):
Every single route right. It is the direct line of sight.
Speaker 4 (21:01):
So if you have issues with the linebacker, you know
what you do. You run the crossing routes. You take
your back out of the backfield runner f angle. He's
got to respect that. And when the quarterbacks staring right
down the middle, you're thinking, defensively, he's going there. But
it's like, no, I mean, how many times that we've
seen Peyton Manning do that turn look at a certain
direction that he moved the linebacker to safety exactly where
(21:23):
he wants him.
Speaker 5 (21:23):
And then he goes for the deeper route. I believe
that Bowl could actually do that.
Speaker 4 (21:28):
And if someone feels as though he can't, how about
this for a trick. Go back to what Bowl was
successful at at Oregon. Debarco's drafted Troy Franklin.
Speaker 5 (21:39):
For this specific reason. Right, that's a built in complimentary peace.
Speaker 4 (21:44):
Put a little small package in just for those two right,
and whatever struggles at Troy Franklin has had thus far.
Getting him involved in the offense early helps his confidence,
helps the quarterbacks, confidence, helps the play calling confidence, But
it puts stress bk on the Bucks defense.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
Well, I mean know, there is sign just sort of
muscle memory, right, there's a comfort level there. Even if
Troy Franklin wasn't drafted.
Speaker 2 (22:07):
Because of the Boon nixing, that's a bonus.
Speaker 1 (22:09):
So I understand that they had a higher grade on him,
and Des Bryan's text and Sean Payton and all of that,
We at least need to see those guys be given
a chance because there is a familiarity there. I understand
this is the NFL, and the defenses look different and
everything that goes into the complexities, and that's the one
thing we didn't have time to get into really with
Jake Carrid's he's going to be battle tested. I tried
to ask Sean Payton this after week one, and he
(22:31):
kind of just wanted to talk about Mike Tomlin.
Speaker 2 (22:32):
Then Parker Gabriel brought it up again.
Speaker 1 (22:34):
Hey, you've got four straight weeks of defensive coaches guys
with a lot of defensive success. Antonio Pears, ostensibly a
defensive coach as well, but he didn't coordinate a defense away.
Ben McDonald has the last couple of years, or Mike McDonald,
I'm sorry, has the last couple of years.
Speaker 2 (22:47):
But you talked about Mike McDonald what he's done with the.
Speaker 1 (22:48):
Ravens and at Michigan, but Ravens specifically, and then obviously
Mike t And we know what Todd Bowles has done
on the defensive side of the ball, and Robert Sala
his defense is nearly pitching a shutout tonight, and we
know how good they are, so he will be battle tested,
and you want to see incremental progress. And it feels
like in some ways we did that pick in the
back of the end zone being the one step forward
(23:11):
one step back, So I don't say it was two
steps forward. It's like it feels like week one, maybe
a half step forward, maybe a full step forward by
the end of the game. But because of that pick,
it's it neutralizes it. So now this week with a
banged up defense, so you got no v to a
plug in the middle, very likely you got no Antoine
Winfield roam in the back, the.
Speaker 2 (23:29):
Best safety in football last year.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
This should be a good opportunity for Bownicks to take
a full step or a step or two and complete
passes down the field. But you also need to be
protected up front. And so how worried are you about
this old line?
Speaker 4 (23:45):
You know, I am just a little concern because when
you go in a row, obviously you were about crowd noise.
Obviously Tampa is not going to be as loud as
Seattle was. But knowing as though Mike mcglitchy is not.
Speaker 1 (24:01):
In, he played pretty wealth the other day in the
past year, Like you're worried, he did j Watt He
was gonna five sacks it too, but that was that
was standing.
Speaker 4 (24:09):
He's out a month now, right, So with him being out,
could you see more pressure from Tampa Bay than we've
seen in the first two games? Obviously, So now how
do you pick that up? So when we look at
most of bo Nick's snaps, most of his snaps this
season have all been not all but some, but most
of them have been in the shotgun. So what he
(24:31):
has to do is he has to now survey the
field and understand there may be a lot of pressure
coming from his right side. So with that being said, well,
who is the automatic hot Now this is not just
on bow, but the receivers have to be aware of
this as well, because when you think about the Broncos offense,
they run a lot.
Speaker 5 (24:51):
Of reduced formations.
Speaker 4 (24:53):
And when you run a lot of those reduced formations BKA,
you bring in the linebacker, you bring in the nickel
and sub packet. So that means that that guy could
come off the edge really quick and blitz.
Speaker 5 (25:03):
So who's picking that up. Is it going to be
Widenberg calling that out or is that going to be
on the quarterback to see that.
Speaker 4 (25:10):
So you need the receiver who may see that guy
coming down.
Speaker 5 (25:14):
It's called a side adjustment.
Speaker 4 (25:16):
You see the guy coming down, what's the building route
off of that? You may have a twelve yard dig route,
but your guy's coming off the edge on a hot
you need to run turn around five yards, flash your numbers,
catch the ball to get up feel to get as
many yards as they can. I haven't really seen that
so far from the Broncos offense. I don't know if
(25:36):
he's built in they just don't do it, but I
just haven't seen that in large number.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
Well, I mean there's a lot that we haven't haven't seen.
Speaker 1 (25:43):
To be fair right, But going back to what you
said about who has to make those calls in those
checks the line of scrimmage, that's Lloyd Kushianbury. That the
most money free agent center's ever gotten, I believe, right,
or pretty darn close.
Speaker 5 (25:55):
I believe.
Speaker 1 (25:56):
I know Ryan Jensen, Colorado kid who got them any.
Speaker 2 (26:00):
Money from the Bucks when you left. The Ravens got
a bunch of money too, But Meravie's most guaranteed money.
Speaker 1 (26:04):
I think the one thing that Lloyd, even as he
progressed but you know they struggled.
Speaker 2 (26:09):
Through his first couple of years, was knew he was smart.
Speaker 1 (26:11):
And when you have a veteran center, they're going to
understand what they need to do and how to help
their young quarterback. But when you've got a rookie quarterback
paired with a rookie a first time playing center, center,
who don't they kind of have to help each other,
and then you're lying on the guard. It feels like
it has to be a team effort. It can't just
(26:32):
be oh, I'm relying on this guy.
Speaker 4 (26:33):
Well, it has to be someone of a team effort.
But you try to lean on your two guards because
as a center, you kind.
Speaker 5 (26:40):
Of book in by those two guys.
Speaker 4 (26:43):
But it's interesting that you bring that up because I
had this conversation with Brete Mester yesterday and it's just like, well,
when we look at the grass scheme of things, could
a guy like Lloyd Kushienberry actually help with where the
Bronco are? And for me, having that stability across that
(27:04):
offensive line, that continuity with so many guys who in
their second year are now playing together, it changes a
line of things, and that continuity is so important.
Speaker 5 (27:14):
You don't really see that around the league. And when
you look at some of.
Speaker 4 (27:17):
The more successful offenses and quarterbacks, they have that one
thing in common, that offensive line and those guys who
really know each other.
Speaker 5 (27:25):
So I know we talk about bow and.
Speaker 4 (27:28):
Then in the offense one of those things offensively that
I go back to. Would things be a little different
slightly for bo if Lloyd Kushionberry was still the Bronco center.
Speaker 1 (27:39):
I think it almost certainly would, because you'd have that
institutional knowledge, if you will, of well, one, just this
offense a little bit more, but also well and actually
beyond that, because Joe Brady coach Lloyd Kushienberry when they
won a national championship, and he obviously came from working
with Sean for a bunch of years in New Orleans,
(28:01):
so he I think that probably we didn't get into
that enough last year, given enough credence because ludds we
know how somebody wasn't Taniel Hacket kept telling us how
he'd win all their brain games and everything that they
would do in addition to the football the football stuff.
But it's probably just overlooked that they had the same
(28:23):
O line with a bunch of vets and even Lloyd
and your three and I guess Quinn last year in
year three for sixteen games and four of them with.
Speaker 2 (28:31):
Mcglinche missing that that.
Speaker 1 (28:33):
Last game, and now you don't have that and mcglinche
now was standing.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
But it's a big change.
Speaker 1 (28:38):
And I understand you can't pay everybody, but maybe they should
have found a way to work a deal and I
met reworking other deals to keep Llyd Christian ber. I'm
not I'm not picking on Wattenburger just from a if
you're going to have a rookie quarterback and that was
the plan in March, you maybe think about bringing that
center back.
Speaker 4 (28:57):
But while I'll say this, even because this in mind
and highsight is always twenty twenty.
Speaker 5 (29:03):
But Tim Patrick isn't here now.
Speaker 4 (29:06):
I'm thinking if that was kind of the outlook at
that time, that they knew in advance, that would be
would have been a proven opportunity to kind of push
that cash towards Lloyd Kushionbury.
Speaker 5 (29:18):
And I get it.
Speaker 4 (29:19):
Every team battles with the situation of who are you
gonna keep who are you going to let go? Based
on money? And I know there's so much money into
RUSS that the team is paying this year and last year,
But I would have loved to see what this offense
would have looked like if they had all five guys.
Speaker 5 (29:37):
Two years in a row, two years in the system.
What it would have been like for a guy like both.
Speaker 2 (29:43):
It's funny because you mentioned Tim Patrick.
Speaker 1 (29:45):
His money obviously gets knocked way down when he comes back.
Speaker 2 (29:49):
But would you be better off right now at Lloyd.
Speaker 1 (29:54):
Kushimbary instead of Portland Sutton ooh cl makes more than
money obviously about six million more.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
I think what Lloyd's getting right near on time?
Speaker 5 (30:01):
Still, well, it could considering how very little sun is
being used, I.
Speaker 4 (30:06):
Would say yes, yes at this moty right, Okay, that
was a lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (30:10):
I'm glad I got to sub in for then.
Speaker 2 (30:13):
I hope you're feeling that.
Speaker 1 (30:14):
I'll be back tomorrow on Broncos Country and Night as well.
Thank you to Grant Smith, thank you to Rick Lewis,
thank you to Shannon Scott, everybody that came out here

Speaker 5 (30:31):

Speaker 2 (30:33):
That's definitely poop
