Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining the show.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
As always, we got Nick Ferguson Zach Seeger's filling in
for Benjamin all Bright cracking, crashing, excuse me, the ferrari
as he is one to say, Nick, how are you
doing on this tremendous New Year's Eve?
Speaker 3 (00:15):
I'm doing spectaculan and I don't know if we can
call them all bright. We may be able to call
him all white, maybe because some of the negative takes
that he has. But I am excited to be here
with you on this New Year's Eve.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Do you have any New Year's resolutions set up for
twenty twenty six?
Speaker 1 (00:34):
I'll do that. Crap. I don't do that. I don't
do it at all.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
Hey, listen, if you are a person that has New
Year's resolutions, don't pay attention.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
To what I said. Do you me?
Speaker 3 (00:46):
I don't do them because think about it, well, most
people make these New Year's resolutions. It is it's almost
by calendar that is projected that you should do a
New Year's resolution.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Should you bring it in a new year? But just
think about it.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
How many people actually stay true to that New Year's resolution?
Speaker 1 (01:04):
Not many.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
I think the overwhelming amount of people quit by like
January nineteenth or something like.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
That's the stat and most people when they make these
New Year's resolutions the number one and I have to
look this up to be for you know, exact, but
I would take a guess at it.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
Majority of the times those New.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Year's resolutions has to have to deal with an individual saying,
you know what, I'm gonna change my body, I'm gonna
eat better, I'm gonna work out, I'm gonna do all
these things, which sounds great, right, yeah, yeah, absolutely, until
you get like fifteen days in it and you're like, oh, man,
what does that agree?
Speaker 1 (01:38):
Yes? Yes, what did I agree to put myself through?
So listen once.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Again New Year's Eve show New Year's Resolution.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
If you have some please text a man let us know.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
I just I don't do it because I'm just like, man,
you should live your life like that the entire time.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
How about this is the Broncos enter the most important part.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
Of the calendar. We've got you know, playoffs and all
that coming.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Up, hopefully maybe even a Super Bowl trip coming up.
What are your New Year's resolutions for the Broncos. What
are some changes you would like to see from the
team as they start to play in twenty twenty six.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
See okay once again, no New Year's Resolution, changes, changes, changes,
self improvement, self setterment.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
Self improvement.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
What I would like to see is, you know, more focus,
right because we've seen this Broncos offense at time move
the ball down the field and it's normally in crunch
time when the game is on the line, and it's
like that's when they rise up and they make those
types of plays.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
And I'm thinking, okay, well.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
If you can do that in the fourth quarter, why
don't we do that for four quarters?
Speaker 1 (02:52):
Right?
Speaker 3 (02:52):
So, if there's a change that I would love to
see from the Broncos moving forward is starting fire us
and keeping your foot on the pedal. Don't don't run
out of gas, don't taper off like you're trying to
push a car a pinto up heel. No, no, no, no,
keep your foot on the gas and let's play four quarters.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
And it's weird that's kind of been lacking for them
this year because it was one of their strongest traits
a season ago. You know, when they played a lesser team,
it was four quarters of butt whappon.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
You know, it was one sided.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
It was kind of the argument Broncos Country had for
this team being good because they would run into playoff
teams and kind of get beat up on. But when
they played lesser opponents, they beat up on them. And
I think the argument for Broncos Country was, hey, we
do deserve respect. We can beat up on the bad
teams even if we're not beating the good teams.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
This year, it's flipped.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
They're beating good teams, but the bad teams are taking
them down to the wire.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
Seeing that is the thing that I continue to bring up,
but I get a lot of pushback, and the pushback
that I receive that is that, well, I'm not embracing
the Broncos w rerecord the way that they are right now.
I'm looking at it as though the team is two
and eight. I'm like, no, that is not the way
that I'm looking at it. I'm looking at it from
the perspective of a former player, right someone who's played
(04:10):
and coached the game and saying, Okay, well that's great,
but it needs to get better. But sometimes there is
there are like justifications out there like, no, it's gonna
come along at some point, and my idea is that, well,
it better come along really fast.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
And that's my point.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
But I was at the gym today and I guess
I spent majority of my time not even working out,
talking to people at the gym because they had a
lot of questions. And this is one of the conversations
that actually came up. And it's like, well, two things
can be true at the same time. A team could
be thirteen and.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Three, right, winning eleven.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
They have eleven and two record as far as fourth
quarter wins, but still there's something missing.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Have you ever cooked a dish or.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
Eight at someone's home and they say into the item
is mac and cheese. You tried the mac and cheese,
and you're like, it looks great. It is really cheesy.
But there's something missing.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
Yeah, right, yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
So when I look at the Broncos, I say, yes, physically, yes,
they're passing the test. They're winning the ball games, right,
so celebrate that. But there is something missing to get them,
for me to get push them over the top. There's
something missing. And I know the ideas that oh, they're
gonna get to it. Well, this is the last game
(05:32):
of the season, and.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
I'd argue this is their last opportunity to really beat
up on an opponent.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
The rest of the way, you're playing great teams. It's
gonna be you know.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
The final late, the Championship round, and then the Super Bowl.
It's gonna be good competition. Great defense is great offenses
from there on out. Do you think if the Broncos
beat up on a lesser Chargers team or a Chargers
team you know, resting Justin Herbert, resting some other guys
as as Jim Harbas said earlier in the week, would
that meaning fully change your outlook of the Broncos to go, Hey,
(06:03):
you know, it's only a one game sample, but they
did go out against the lesser opponent who wasn't playing
for anything, and they.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Whooped up on them. Like let's say it's like last.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Year's Week eight team game where Chiefs came into town,
sat some starters, and the Broncos beat them. It's like
thirty eight to nothing or something close to that. Would
that have you feeling meaningfully differently about this Broncos team
as opposed to how you feel about them right now.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
No, because the one thing that it would do for
me it is establish a level of consistency, right because
the idea is that you compete against the teams that
or at your level or above your level, and those
teams that are below your level, you smash them, You
beat them to oblivion. And that hasn't really happened thus far.
(06:53):
I'm hoping that the Broncos take this as an opportunity
as you move into the playoffs, though, you're gonna have
that first round by so there's gonna be a couple
of days before you play your next football game. So,
you know what, leave the fans with something memorable, right,
and as it pretends to whether it change you know
(07:14):
my mind. They don't care about what I think. But
here's what I know from a player. From a player standpoint,
you want to make sure that you have confidence moving
into that bye week.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
Here's what we're capable of.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
You establish that right because for the past two weeks,
whether people want to admit it or not, you have
two weeks to twenty points. Two weeks to twenty points.
I didn't make that up. It is what it is.
And based on what I'm seeing is like, no, let's
crank this thing up. Let's say if we could push
(07:49):
it to thirty points. Let's say if we could push
it to forty points. Because we know once we get
into the playoffs and you're playing against better teams, right,
and you have to show that you can score when
you want to, how you want to, the way you
want to.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
That's all I'm looking for.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
So as a former player, you think there's merit to
the idea of getting hot at the right time or
you know, going into the playoffs the right way. I
think you know there's an idea there's truth to that
season momentum or in season momentum.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
You damn right right, because you want to establish Zach
somewhat of an identity going in now. The identity that
the Broncos now have is that they can win close games.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
Yes, that's great.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
I'm not trying to dump on that, but you have
to know when you get into the playoffs, you may
be in a lot of tight games. But once again,
who you're facing at the quarterback position, who's calling plays
for that other team?
Speaker 1 (08:51):
How well is it that they run the ball?
Speaker 3 (08:54):
If that other team that you're playing checks those boxes,
what you did during this regular season, that's not gonna matter,
because that's why it's called the regular season and the
freaking postseason. And we know we've seen teams elevate their
level play in the postseason sometimes when they don't do
it in the regular season. That's what I'm expecting this
team to actually do because last year they lost to Buffalo,
(09:18):
right just got back to the playoffs nine years somewhat layoff.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
So this year, for me, expactations go up.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
And the way that I look at exact and I
put it to you where you can visualize this.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
A high jump when you.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
Swatch the Olympics and they said in the high jump,
every time someone goes over the bar, what is it
that they do?
Speaker 1 (09:42):
Tell me what is it they do? They raised the bar.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
Have you ever seen them raise it to six' to
two and then, say well everyone's made, It liz put
a dive back down to five?
Speaker 1 (09:51):
Feet? No, Never.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
No so for, me this is a little of me
being around The broncos culture in their hate day to,
think for we're moving a bar, up let's let's get,
there BECAUSE i know that these guys are capable of
doing just.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
That and all year long we've heard the, alumni whether
it be you know it keep to liber Tj ward
who are getting into media now or yourself talk about
Or Rod, Smith Steve, atwater all the all the Former
broncos alumni we have here ON koa talk about The.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
Broncos are talking about.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
Championships you, know the championships are the, bar that's the
standard here in The Mile High. City that wasn't necessarily
the conversation though In.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
August going into this.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
Season in your, mind what do The broncos have to
accomplish from this point forward for it to be a successful?
Season if they win this coming week lock up that one,
seed is that enough for it to be a successful
season in your?
Speaker 1 (10:46):
Eyes oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no my.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
Man but would it have been a successful season IF
i traveled back in time To august and, said, hey
The broncos are going to go fourteen and, three lock
up the one seed in the? Conference is that a successful?
SEASON i Think August.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
Nick might have, Now august might have said it is
because at that, time if we were going back in
the way.
Speaker 1 (11:06):
Back, machine that's when you Had.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
Kansas, City, Buffalo, Baltimore, baltimore those teams were perceived to
be the. Favorites AND i even throw The chargers in
there at that, time right they just Drafted Marion hamptons,
like oh, man you, know Coach harvard is going to
turn things around because you Got, herbert who's of every
telling the, guy and they Got bedell and they got
(11:29):
A Mario hampton to run the, ball so they should do.
Well but then they had a bevy of injuries that
changed their. Trajectory and when you look at The broncos
and a lot of these, teams, right, like the thing
that separate them sometimes is who's. Healthy The broncos have
been really, healthy and that's why keeping your players healthy
(11:50):
is so, vital is so important to even talking about the.
Playoffs BUT i go back to, this and this may
Be i'm different mentally from a lot of, people but
when you've been a part of something that an organization
is set the standard to a certain, level it is
hard to retract and go back from.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
That.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
Right so it's like if you Have romen noodles and
then somehow you were blessed in life to eat you,
know fill at.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
Me young or is Top sirlo on?
Speaker 3 (12:22):
Steak?
Speaker 1 (12:23):
Yep do you want to go back To romen? Noodles it's,
Hard it's hard hard to.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
That, No, no my taste buds and my Palette, ZACH
i want t bone. STEAK i got a standard to
live in now exactly. Right, so so you're not gonna
change that standard of. Living And i'm saying the same
things should apply to where The broncos are.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Now AND i know that's where the ownership wants it to.
Speaker 3 (12:46):
Be that's where Coach, Peyton George, Peyton Vance joseph, in
the players.
Speaker 1 (12:50):
In the locker, room that's where they're. Thinking So i'm,
like if we're thinking that.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
Way let that be the. Mindset let's not undermine, ourselves.
Right AND i know sometimes you, okay we want to
be humble around certain. People this is not the time
when you have an opponent in front of. YOU i
don't care top tier or bottom. Tier we run it
through your. Chest that's the mentality, period point. Blank so
(13:14):
for you.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
Now that expectation for The broncos should be Super bowl
or bus at we sent appearance to. Waiting the whole.
Thing where are you setting the bar for success for.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
The bronco at this? POINT i, mean wasn't a whole damn?
Speaker 3 (13:25):
Thing? Right why, say, well you know, what last year
we got there and you know we lost To, buffalo
and this year the mindset is just just kind of
get into the playoffs and see if we can make some,
noise win the. Division that's kind of, cool and it
possibly gets to the Super. Bowl you, know if things
didn't work, out you, know it's still one hell of a.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
Season, no, No while all.
Speaker 3 (13:48):
Those things are great here in The broncos organization Under
Mike shanahan And Pat, bolan it was Super bowl a.
Bus that was the. Mentality WHEN i came from The
New York. Jets that was the. Mentality and it's not, like,
Well nick bro we're going to rest on The jets. Mentality, no, no,
(14:09):
no you're a now member Of Broncos. Country whatever you
thought coming, in and it Wasn't Super bowl the, bus
then you need to change that mindset because that's what it.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
Is. Like there's thirty one, teams there's thirty two. Teams
now we.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
Can break down and, say, well how many teams do
we think possess that mentality and we're gonna get a.
Handful i'll put The steelers, There i'll put The patriots,
There Miami, Dolphins i'm not putting them.
Speaker 1 (14:31):
There, cleveland they just win and win six, games.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Right that's a successful season For cleveland winning six games
And Broncos. Country, no that's not and What Sean payton
and the guys have done this. Year you've taken that.
Speaker 1 (14:47):
Bar on the high drum and you moved it. Up
you moved it. Up that's par for the. Course that's
what it's like playing in this.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
Market The, nuggets The, Avs, broncos and we're hoping at
some point The rockies come along to as. Well but
that's where it. Is if The rockies going to.
Speaker 1 (15:07):
Turn it, around this would be a very very fun
city to be.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
In and here's my thing with The, broncos BECAUSE i
think you're, right the franchise has those. Expectations it's been
a long cold, decade but they're finally, back AND i
think it's good, to you, know reinstall those expectations of,
hey we're not The Cincinnati, bengals where we're just happy
we made the, dance LIKE i want to win the dang.
THING i will, say, though this is still you, know
(15:33):
the building. Years you're still dealing with That Russell wilson
dead cap. Hit you haven't had all those draft.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
Picks to build up the roster that comes off the
books after this.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
Year it, does and once, again think about where they.
Speaker 3 (15:44):
Are even with that being, Said Sean payton And George
peyton has done a lot with this, roster, right he has, done,
yes a lot with this.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
Rosson you can, say, well maybe.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
They are, Ahead, yes that's Where i'm going one two
years ahead.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
Ideas so what it? Is what it?
Speaker 3 (16:02):
Is Step either you want to ease into those shoes
or you want to just step into them and own.
Speaker 1 (16:09):
Them which one would you rather? Be if you want
to ease into it.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
And, say, well you know what Bo nix is in
his second, year or you want to step into those
shoes and kick someone figatively, speaking not, literally.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
But figuratively speaking in the. Mouth which one you? WANT
i want to take someone in the mouth and we.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
GO i was gonna Play devil's, advocate BUT i ultimately
do agree with, you AND i think look around THE
nfl for reasons.
Speaker 1 (16:34):
WHY i, Mean Joe burrow his.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
Best, opportunity it turns, out was his second year in the.
League after, that everyone was talking about how it's only
up from here and how Many Super bowls could he?
Speaker 1 (16:44):
Win with him And mahomes going back and.
Speaker 2 (16:45):
FORTH i think everyone you know would have thought that
six years of Prime josh S, allen you, know seven
to eight years of Prime Lamar. Jackson those guys would
have had at least one ring or at least A
Super bowl appearance by, now and.
Speaker 1 (16:58):
Those guys don't have any of.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
THAT i think If Dan campbell and The lions two
years ago in THE Nfc Championship game where they come
up just ever so short of the forty nine, ers
and he tells, everyone, hey we might not ever be
back here, again and you look at it right, now
and not only are they not going back there this,
year it looks like maybe they're on the downslope now and.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
They won't be back there.
Speaker 2 (17:21):
AGAIN i there's like the saying in, life you, know
you don't know you're in the good times until the
good times have passed or. WHATEVER i think there's a
lot of truth to. That to THE, nfl this might
be despite The Russell wilson numbers and whatever, else Bo
nick's being relatively, inexperienced the defense kind of swooning down
the stretch, here this might be The broncos' best window
(17:44):
of the next few.
Speaker 1 (17:45):
Years it doesn't mean it, is but it might. Be
you don't know until it's too.
Speaker 2 (17:48):
Late so, yes there is, PRESSURE i think to seeze
like you've got the one. Seed right, now so long
as you take care of business against The chargers', backups
you better.
Speaker 1 (17:56):
Take advantage of that.
Speaker 3 (17:57):
Opportunity, yes because once, again as we roll into a new,
year here's what we.
Speaker 1 (18:02):
Know there's nothing.
Speaker 3 (18:04):
Guaranteed the only thing, that like my dad told, me
was guaranteed was death and. Taxes that's about. It And
i'll go back to the five to six. Season, right
we won THE Afc. West we were thirteen and. Three
right as far as our, offense they were.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
Seventh in the league in.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
Points from a defense, perspective we were third as far
as points given.
Speaker 1 (18:30):
Up sure or? Not, yes which was.
Speaker 3 (18:32):
Great we won that first playoff, game, right we Beat
Tom brady and The patriots in a single calendar. Year
this is when they were. Rolling they were, rolling and
we rolled into That pittsburgh. Game wasn't our best, game
didn't work, Out AND i could tell you personally THAT
i had a feeling that things may not go into
(18:55):
in our favor because the aura of the, game the,
crowd the locker, room it was entirely. Different because once,
again playoff football is different than regular. Season why it's
a winner go. Home regular, season you lose that, game
you know what we'll dust ourselves on which we'll get
(19:16):
them next.
Speaker 1 (19:17):
Time there is no next, time right and in that,
time that team that two thousand and, five two thousand and.
Speaker 3 (19:22):
Six the mindset when WHEN i was driving, home it
was just, like you know, what we got everyone coming,
Back we're gonna get right back. Here didn't. Happen players,
left coach is left. Right so you don't know how
long you're gonna be in this. Window The broncos are,
ahead they are light years. Ahead so it's.
Speaker 1 (19:42):
About making the most out of this.
Speaker 3 (19:44):
Opportunity don't put shortcomings on, yourself don't do it as a,
player don't allow coacher do it at more, points don't
allow people in the media to do it right, now
you have to strike when the iron is hot because
you have no idea what's gonna happen next.
Speaker 1 (19:59):
Year guys are going to be, healthy you don't. Know
like The, chargers they looked awesome until they got.
Speaker 2 (20:05):
Injured they looked like maybe the best team in the
league before they started to lose some guys like. Flies
if you reverse The broncos And chargers injury like this,
year The chargers are probably the one seed and The
broncos are you, know fighting to make the playoffs this last.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
Week of the.
Speaker 3 (20:16):
Season, Absolutely and this is why you these players don't
take this moment for.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
Granted don't look at it as though you know, what
we are a great.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
Team we GOT ps, two we Got Nick benito always
playing better, Man we're gonna get that number one. Seed
and you don't press the button Where WHAT i mean
by that is you don't put pressure on yourself to
be better than you were the week.
Speaker 1 (20:42):
Before.
Speaker 3 (20:43):
Right you have to because you would kick yourself if
you blow this moment and you look back and say
there's SOMETHING i could have done and you don't do.
It the Reason i'm saying this is that it is
not One i'm being a. Homer, Two i'm being a debut.
Downer i've been, There i've seen. It So i'm just
trying to, prepare or we'll prepare these players maximize this.
(21:07):
Moment there's no guarantee as you go and get to
the place that you want. To the only PLACE i
guarantee if you put your foot to the pedal every single,
play leave no stone on turn and you run through
someone's freaking.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
Face Sean, payton an all time great head, coach had
fifteen years of A hall Of fame caliber quarterback.
Speaker 1 (21:26):
And how many times did he get there? Once got
there once and won? It but got there only?
Speaker 2 (21:31):
Once AND i, think you, know you point out some
of those aren't even his.
Speaker 1 (21:35):
Fault you have the.
Speaker 2 (21:36):
WEIRD Nfc championship pass interference, Play you've got The minneapolis
miracle where it's just a. Man it's plus it's a
single game with The nation tournament. Here sometimes the breaks
don't go your way and you could have the injury.
Luck you could have the best team in your conference
and you have one off day against The steelers or
whatever because the energy's, off and next thing you, know
(21:57):
it's it's nine and seven the next, year and you
got to rebuilding from the ground. Up SO i think
there absolutely is some pressure on The broncos to take
advantage of, this even though they are at discuss.
Speaker 3 (22:08):
And the biggest the last Thing i'll leave you, with
don't be afraid of the, moment, right don't think about.
Speaker 1 (22:14):
Failure don't think about.
Speaker 3 (22:15):
It. Right if something happens and you don't do, well
make it for them the next.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
Play The broncos aren't only looking to set themselves up
for playoff positioning this, week they're also chasing a few
different historical marks and. Records we'll get into that coming
up next right here On Broncos country tonight ON. Koa
(22:40):
filling in For Benjamin, albright It's Zach segers and as,
always we've Got Nick ferguson joining.
Speaker 1 (22:46):
Me, nick how are you? Doing, oh, no? Spectacular, yes,
Yes i'm going on. Spectacular i'm glad to hear.
Speaker 2 (22:54):
It and one THING i know is top of mind
for you is that The broncos are still chasing THAT
nfl team sack record of seventy two set by the
nineteen eighty Four. Bears wildly, enough just one year before
the legendary eighty Five bears defense eight sacks from tying that,
record nine sacks from breaking. It but you, know and
(23:15):
that's definitely, lofty it's not, impossible but to take a
good effort from. Them that, said they're four sacks as
a team from reaching the.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
Top five.
Speaker 2 (23:24):
Highest total again is a collective unit IN nfl, history
and their two sacks away.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
From reaching the top.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
Ten, nick how far in those standings do you think
they ultimately? Finish do you think they could even own
the record at the end Of week, Eighteen.
Speaker 1 (23:37):
YEAH i think. THEY i think it's, possible, right not,
likely but.
Speaker 3 (23:44):
Possible and the REASON i say, that of course we're
looking at closing out the.
Speaker 1 (23:51):
Final game of the, season, Right And i'm.
Speaker 3 (23:54):
Not saying having it trickled into the, playoffs the ability
to do it, NOW i don't know if it. Happens
if it, is sign me. UP i would celebrate just
like everyone. Else BUT i thought last week Against Kansas
city they were going to get at least four in that,
game which were to put them closer And week, eighteen
(24:17):
Whether herbert played Or Trey lance, played.
Speaker 1 (24:22):
The one thing that is.
Speaker 3 (24:25):
Something that they did do is they achieved that goal
of breaking the sixty three historic record that they accomplished last.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
Year and did it in one last. Game sixteen games
for that, record.
Speaker 3 (24:37):
Right and that was kind of the idea when we
were when we were walking through the preseason and, spring you,
know the training camp for The. Broncos the ideas, like,
okay well they got sixty three, sacks can they do
that and replicate that? Again they have And i'll say
this that is doing part for a lot of heavy
(24:59):
lifting that the players themselves have done independently because those
sacks don't, come you, know by. Themselves like if you Advanced,
joseph you could dial up a, blitz but you're not
sure if it's going to get home or which guy
is gonna get. Free but you can see those guys
working hard every single game to beat their one on one.
Matchups and there's WHEN i think about what The broncos
(25:24):
have accomplished from a pass rush, STANDPOINT i mean that
that is something that should be, validated whether they get
to that all important seventy, two seventy, four whatever it,
is that's a major accomplishment of what it.
Speaker 1 (25:36):
Says is though The broncos defense is being. Consistent remember
that that's going to be a theme, here.
Speaker 3 (25:44):
Consistency, right when we look at both sides of the,
ball if you were to, say, well which side of
the ball was more, consistent you have to you, know
nothing against the, offense but you have to say, defense,
Right and even THOUGH i know since the bye week
things are somewhat taper offsac, YES i know, that AND
(26:06):
i think the, defense in my, Opinion you tell me
how you, THINK i don't think that they receive a fair, shake,
Right and it's not just The broncos DEFENSE i think
this is just, defense, period because the league has built
itself up as being a quarterback driven league that somehow
(26:26):
we overlook some of the value that defensive players in
units actually.
Speaker 1 (26:32):
Provide the rules put them at an insane. Disadvantage it's.
Speaker 2 (26:36):
Ridiculous it is absolutely an offensive, league and THE nfl
tells you as. Much anytime you start to see the
defense catch up to the, Offense like, honestly these last
few years with the too high stuff everyone's been talking,
about you've seen offensive production go.
Speaker 1 (26:50):
Down what does THE nfl?
Speaker 2 (26:51):
Do they institute a new kickoff rule that gives everyone
the ball at about the thirty five or forty yard
line every, time and guess, What nicks scorings right back.
Speaker 1 (26:59):
Up it's gone.
Speaker 3 (27:00):
Up and as a defender is, like, man that's.
Speaker 1 (27:03):
RIDICULOUS i, mean can you change some rules to favor?
Speaker 3 (27:07):
Us because that WHEN i was, playing it seemed like
every single year when the rules committee we get, together
there are more rules being changed to give the offense
more of an. Advantage right, now whether you like it or,
not like now we got the hip drop, tackle right
(27:27):
that is SOMETHING i think that it should be cleaned.
Up coach should do a better job of teaching. It
players needed to be better at. Tackling but it also
gives offense somewhat of advantage because that rule at times
is subjective depending on who the official.
Speaker 1 (27:41):
Is what was the last rule that helped the?
Speaker 2 (27:45):
Defense just objectively helped the defense over helping the. OFFENSE
i think we can both think of a lot that
helped the. OFFENSE i really struggle to think of a
single rule Where i'm, like, oh that that favored the.
Speaker 1 (27:55):
DEFENSE i, mean, look you tell me.
Speaker 2 (27:59):
Reviewing passing, interference but that helps the defense. Some that
also helps the offense because you're allowing them to get
some penalties on the.
Speaker 1 (28:06):
Defense and that only existed for a single. Season so even, that,
Yeah i'm glads you brought that.
Speaker 3 (28:11):
Up because it was the twenty nineteen twenty twenty. Season
and remember The saints of playt hosting The Minnesota. Vikings
it's the last play the. Ranks no, no, no, no, no
no no no, no that too. Happened but the One i'm
talking about was Against. Minnesota Kirk cousins was the. Quarterback
he throws the ball to the corner of the end
(28:32):
zone the left side for The Minnesota vikings And Kyle
rudolph is the tight end and he pushed. Off he
actually extends his arm and he pushes.
Speaker 1 (28:43):
Off walk off win for The Minnesota.
Speaker 3 (28:45):
Vikings and that became somewhat of a battling cry for defensive, units,
like hey, man we need to have some of these
rules change and make sure that the league actually kind
of follows through with. It so what happened was, like, oh,
yeah you know, what you can challenge that. Call you can,
challenge but if you don't win the, challenge you lose
(29:06):
the time out and the challenge. Flag so what the
league did was implement that rule to discourage coaches for
even challenging OFFENSIVE.
Speaker 2 (29:15):
Pi, well it was all a sham if people remember,
us any time it was, challenged unless it was the
most smoking. Gun he tackled him before the ball got,
there and for some, reason it wasn't called on the.
Play it had to be wildly obvious for it to be.
Overturned there'd be cases where they'd review. It it'd be
like that looks a lot like pass, interference or that
(29:35):
doesn't look anything like pass, interference and they'd go with
the call on the, field and it was.
Speaker 1 (29:39):
Very clear that they were trying to. Deter they were
trying to deter people raising the. Flag his was. Crazy
ears was.
Speaker 3 (29:47):
Crazy it was, like if you ever in the ballroom,
trivia like which coach IN nfl history has been screwed
by blown calls that would have advanced them in the?
Speaker 1 (29:59):
Playoffs who was? THAT nfl? Coach? Sean it's crazy, Enough,
well that's.
Speaker 2 (30:06):
Crazy the whole city Of New orleans after they're the
one with the rams who tried to force a petition
where the game would be replayed from that moment or.
Speaker 1 (30:16):
Something of course it was never going to go, through of, course.
Speaker 2 (30:18):
But they tried to actually like take it to court
and get the game.
Speaker 1 (30:21):
Replayed IT'S i don't blame them too too. Much they've
had a really tough go of.
Speaker 2 (30:25):
Things but, YEAH i just hope that playoff misfortune doesn't
Follow sean payn To. Denver hopefully that was A New
orleans bad juju voodoo situation or something it.
Speaker 3 (30:34):
Is and you know, what there's MORE i want to
say about The broncos defense THAT i think is kind
of being overlooked despite them amassing sixty four, sex overcoming
the total last. Year so we'll get into that a little.
(30:55):
Later BUT i think there's still a little more meat
on that.
Speaker 2 (30:58):
Bone there absolutely, is because we didn't even get into
everyone's talking about the single season. Record they could have
some multi season history that they're in the.
Speaker 1 (31:07):
Running four. Two we'll Get.
Speaker 2 (31:13):
Zach seegers And Nick ferguson ringing in the new. Year,
nick we were talking about the pass. Rush now they
could make some history with a few sacks this week
Of Trey, lance some Other broncos have a chance to make.
History BOENIX i think the most likely to hit his.
Mark he's one win away from Tying Russell wilson for
(31:35):
the most wins by any quarterback through two. Seasons he's
also currently third most in terms of passing touchdowns all.
Time he's like fourteen Behind Justin herbert for the, record
so we won't pass him, there but he is just
seven away From Dan marino in. Second if The broncos
wanted to run up the score on The, chargers maybe
(31:55):
he could get to that. One but along with the sack,
record which is far fed state eight, sacks the one
THAT i think is most likely for the team to
get IS. Rj, harvey, who with two receiving touchdowns will
become the first rookie IN nfl history with seven plus
rushing touchdowns and seven plus receiving, Touchdowns, nick are you
(32:18):
going to be tracking any of these chances FOR nfl
history for The Denver broncos in this the final?
Speaker 3 (32:24):
Week, absolutely Because i'm going to track them just like
the players and the players agents are going to track, them,
Right because you have to figure that a lot of
these players have incentives in their contracts and when you
hit those, incentives.
Speaker 1 (32:39):
You want that money in the, bag Right and when.
Speaker 3 (32:42):
You think about the, playoffs The broncos having that projected
by they're not making money that, game they'll get, paid,
Right so you want to make sure you close out
the regular season not just with THE doug but very
productive you're able to hit those. Incentives AND i know
we were talking about the sacks before the. Break here's
(33:05):
the thing that's changed for The broncos from last year
to this. Year they're having more guys contribute from the
sack total than they did last. Season and what's crazy
is Like Nick benito finished the season last year with
thirteen and a half, Sacks he's sitting right now at
twelve and a. Half And i'm going to go ahead
(33:25):
and proclaim that he's going to get two and a
half sacks in this.
Speaker 1 (33:29):
Game, Well, SUNDAY i hope you're. Right where are you
at with The Nick benito?
Speaker 2 (33:33):
Conversation that is Something i've started to see bubble up
In broncos. Country do you think that's a concern that
his sack production is tailed off as hard as it?
Speaker 1 (33:42):
Has he HAD i think something like eight and.
Speaker 2 (33:45):
A half sacks through the first you, know six seven
games or, so and then he's only had four and
a half or for whatever since that.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
Point do you think that's concerning to?
Speaker 2 (33:55):
You or do you think it's a product of offenses
adjusting To Nick. Benito i'm kind of the camp That
i'm not that worried about. IT i think it's just
offenses are, adjusting putting more attention To Nick, benito and
as a, result you're Seeing John Franklin myers And Zach
allen AND Dj jones And Malcolm roach go.
Speaker 3 (34:11):
Off, well there's a number of, Things and for me
to answer your, Question i'm not down On Nick. Benito
this is not somewhat of an indictment of his inability
as his skill. Set we've seen him over two years
sample size this guy is plays ridiculous the way that
he gets off the ball and puts stress on opposing offensive.
(34:32):
LINEMAN i mean it's tough someone so that they dedicate
maybe a tight end or running back to chip him
before he goes. Out and if you ever watch The broncos,
game just watch how both he And john n the
cooper a line. Up it's sort of like that same
lineup or alignment That Miles garrett.
Speaker 1 (34:52):
Has and WHAT i mean by that it's a why Nine.
Speaker 3 (34:56):
And that means is though he is like maybe two
three yarards outside the. Tackle so the idea is to
get that tackle to deep set and give you a
two way. Go if for some reason he short, sets
then you take his ass and you put your hand
down the middle and you drive him back to the.
Speaker 1 (35:13):
Quarterback, right that's kind of the.
Speaker 3 (35:15):
Idea but what teams have done is to limit what
The broncos can do from an edge pressure standpoint is pretty.
Wise the idea is how quickly can you get the
ball out of your? Hands if the quarterback is getting
the ball out of his. HANDS i don't care who you,
are you could be In Usain. Bolt you're not getting
to the. Quarterback if he throws the ball and gets
(35:35):
away with the ball out of his hand really. Quickly
here's the other thing, too that has impacted that when
your offense scores a lot of points in the, game
what does it do to.
Speaker 1 (35:47):
The posing offensive coordinator in the?
Speaker 3 (35:49):
Offense that's, Right so now they can't run with the
balance attack.
Speaker 1 (35:54):
Anymore they're now with chasing.
Speaker 3 (35:55):
Points so this is why the production of the defense
and the offense it's a perfect, marriage and that marriage
hasn't really been the.
Speaker 1 (36:03):
Same so if we're asking, ourselves why.
Speaker 3 (36:06):
Is it That Nick Benito Johnny cooper hasn't been really
as successful as they were in the early, part that's
a huge part of it because if your offense is
only scoring a marginal amount of, points then the other
team is, like, well we can stay in our.
Speaker 1 (36:20):
Offense like think About.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
Jacksonville jacksonville ran the ball, anyway even though they couldn't
really muster any.
Speaker 1 (36:27):
Role why they had to keep the defense.
Speaker 2 (36:29):
Honest, yeah and you've seen that teams explicitly entering these
games against The broncos defense trying to frustrate the pass,
rushers get him to moralize so they can have a
little more time in the.
Speaker 1 (36:40):
Pocket we'll definitely get more into that coming.
Speaker 2 (36:43):
Up at the top of the, hour we've got The
Denver Posts Parker gabriel joining. Us make sure you stick
around and stay tuned for that coming up On Broncos country,
tonight right here on eight to fifty k.
Speaker 1 (36:53):
Away
