(00:36):
I had been working there at the station in Greensboro
for eight years and I just outgrew it. I had
applied to a bunch of different stations, but I wanted
to be near water. Okay, didn't get any of those,
or if I got it, I got offers, but it
was like for the same amount of money or less money,
and what work went on. So it was Christmas time.
(00:57):
My friend came into town. We went and had uh dinner,
and he said, Hey, there's an opening at JAILB. You
should send the air check. I'm like, all right, I
said one. Didn't tell nobody. Didn't think I was going
to get a call because that had already got rejected
from GCI in Chicago. Okay, I still got the letter somewhere.
(01:17):
Ended up getting the job here. Drove up here, drove
through a blizzard, snowstorm. I'm coming into Michigan. Listening to
the radio, it says minus thirty wind chill. I'm from
North Carolina. I didn't know what wind chill was. Pulled
up in front of the pontry train hotel parked. I
get out the car. My skin is burning, believe it,
(01:38):
my dumb ass stop. My skin was burning because I
was in the car too long. I didn't know it
was a wind chip.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
Believe it.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
Yep. Next day I go get in my car a
grand am to go to McDonald's and get something to eat.
My car is like, bitch, I ain't starting. Thish is cold.
Fuck that you would not start took me. It took
me a day to get that car to start.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
I believe it.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
But now I can handle the weather good.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
I can't handle heat.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
I can handle the cold, man, I can handle it. Yep.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
See you got that broncho out there and say I'm
a Ford Man. That's why I asked you about that.
Oh yeah, I got ten Ford trucks. Whole word My
wife said, why you got so many trucks cars? I said,
why you got so many shoes that you didn't buy?
Come on now, let's keep it real.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Oh my god, Bruce, Bruce is in the building.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
What's going on?
Speaker 2 (02:30):
What's happening in family?
Speaker 3 (02:31):
Doing everything?
Speaker 2 (02:32):
Good? Man, I'm blessing Holly favored. Man, I'm doing good.
I can't complain. I could complain, but why should I complain.
I'm not going to complain, but I'm good. It's nothing
to complain about it. It is what it is.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
My mother always say, listen, when somebody make up in there, man,
they gonna do something.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
They gonna do it. Let it go, let it go,
let it go, let it go.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Tonight you act The Motor City Soundboard sold out?
Speaker 3 (02:53):
Sold out?
Speaker 2 (02:54):
I asked him and said, is it sold out? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Oh, it's sold out. We should have did two days
instead of there. We should did Friday and Saturday. But
we're gonna know the next time I come here. But
you know, one thing I learned about Detroit. Loved Detroit,
and I love the people because people are respectful and
it's not a it's not a love hate with Detroit.
They either love you or they hate you, and I'm
(03:16):
gonna tell you something else. No matter what the weather is,
Detroit coming out.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Oh yeah, it's a fashion show. Oh yeah, we having
a fashion show.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Oh you believe it? Oh yeah, you know.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
Detroit is the reason I bought a mint coat. I
was in City Sluggers. A dude came in out, laid
his soup down on the count and unzipped the bagad
I need to.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Match this suit.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
Or it was tomato red soup, but they had a
mint coat on. I said, good God of this dude
got a meat coach. I'm a litter. I had one maid,
and I know a lot of minks lost their lives
making this coat. You know what I'm saying. I'm sorry
to the mothers and the fathers and the babies, but
Bruce got seven mint coats. Now they're gonna be all right,
They're gonna be they populated. Well, they're gonna be all right,
(04:00):
gonna be all right, they repopulated.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Well, so how is it being who you are doing
what you do? You've when did you realize that you
were funny and you can make a difference in people's
lives and you know their their spiritualness and everything.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
Well, let me get this straight. I didn't know.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
I mean, people lives better. I didn't know. I didn't
I've been fun in my whole life after as a
key to life now.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Oh yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
And I was big in the church, you know, went
to a holding church and I had a bisher told me,
he said, you're a preacher, but you're a different type
of preacher. He said you're gonna help people's spirit in
the soul. And he said they're gonna be able to
heal themselves just from laughter. And I was silly in church.
And you know, somebody to get the showering look funny,
I laugh, you know people your mama, you know, don't laugh.
(04:46):
I mean I'll be laying in the flow, you know.
And it was a family at this church, because seeing
an olden church, they make you testify.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
You get up.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
They say, if God did something for you today, if
God woke you up, woke you up this morning, yes you.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Got something testified about it.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
So the family last name was Damn, and lady had
been sick and she say, I want to thank mother, Damn, sister, damn, brother, damn.
She couldn't think of everybody, she said, you know, I
just want to thank the whole damn family. And let
me tell you, man, I laid in the floor and
the bitcher looked at me, said, I know he laughing
(05:22):
because the lady it was they was dead serious and
this was their last name for real. But when I
heard that, they had to pick me up out for
they thought I was shouting. I wasn't shouting, man, I
was laying there laughing.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
Man, that's something.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
Oh my god, that's something. So you know, man, life
is good. Life is good, and you know, you just
have to make it. A lot of these young kids
got this entitlement spirit and they think everybody's supposed to
do something because they they're no bro, you get get
out and get it. Yeah, you know, I'm be riding
around and I'm getting it. You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
You know some adults are like that. I mean, I
got to remind myself that if I want something, I
gotta go get nobody's around here is just gonna hand
it to me. I gotta go get it.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
Well, let me tell you, back in the day, I
love transams and Z twenty eight camaros, my uncle promised
me one, he gonna get me one.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
And my uncle done died and gone.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
I'm still awaiting on this transam and this D twenty
come and he's still He died in ninety three. He
was one hundred and thirty six years old. I'm gonna
get you, and I sall, I'm gonna get you. I
ain't got it yet. So you know what I did
that made me get motivated to get it myself. I
didn't get mad at him. I say, you ain't gonna
do it. I'm able, I can do it. And that's
why I do the things that I do. Now that part,
(06:35):
you know what I mean? Yeah, because my kids still tease.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
Me to this day that I always wanted the candy
Apple red three twenty five. I BMW convertible. No, I
didn't have to be convertible, but I would take a
curve vertible. Now because I got the dress, it can
flop all around and.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Get your good cigaret. You know what I'm saying. You
smoked cigagar.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
I don't. The only time I've smoked the cigar was
in Cornac, France, and it was Cuban. And after you
go Cuban, you just can't go back.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
And well, you know, I smoke the I got a
place in Columbus Ohio called the Tender Box, and they
make these Jack Daniel cigars flavored, not too strong, not beitter, sweet,
burn good. And when they send them to me, they're moist.
They're very moist. And I smoke him. I'd be like
I could play. You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
I did in Hell, but I smoke him.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
You didn't in Hell. I did in Hell, Lord Mercy,
not in Hell. I be damn man. You come to
Detroit often, you do shows here.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
I try to come twice a year, twice and every
time I come, every single but if I come into Fox,
or I come at Joe Louis Arena or the Masonic Temple,
they show up man. Detroit shows up man, and they
show out and they support whatever you got. And there's
a lot of comedians are from Detroit that are really
(07:49):
really good, like Mike Bonner, very good friend of mine,
very good, stupid funny, you know, Tony Roberts from Detroit,
stupid funny. And a lot of them has a way,
you know, big daddy fits. I don't know if you
remember kool Aid, and yeah, I remember to a Row Shelton.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Yes, you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
Downtown Tony Brown I'm talking about some legends, man. I'm
talking about some dudes that was extremely funny man. And
you know I can't do them but show love because
they always show love to me. Foolish was one of them.
Foolish was very funny. Foolish is an insane Let me
take a crazy guys. I can't even I haven't ran
into him in a while, but whenever we were around
(08:29):
each other, man, he would have me crying. He's stupid, man,
and not even trying to but you know, yeah, he
told me to bro something to get my teeth. Sick man,
I'm finna get the Denzels. You know what I'm saying.
You're gonna get the Denzel teeth. You know what I'm saying.
And Foolish man. You know I'm gonna give a shout
out the Foolish and Coco because Coco helped me out
years ago, used to feed me. You know, you know,
(08:50):
I'm gonna have it all the way she had no food.
I'm gonna come around, So Coco, show love, Foolish, show
Foolish to take me to a place called the Turkey
Grill yep, degree and they had Friday Turkey wings like
to do Buffalo Wings, and so I can't do that.
I'm show love, the show love, but I'm here. I'll
(09:10):
be here tonight. But the next time I come, I
promise everybody we'll do two days instead of one day.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
Good good. You're a two day kind of guy. You're
a two day comedian. I am man. I should have
did too, man, Yeah, you're a two day comedian. You
can definitely do that. I remember just just saying, now,
let's talk about your special too, Yes, do it? How
did that come about?
Speaker 3 (09:32):
Well? I ain't did it, especially in fifteen years.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
You know.
Speaker 1 (09:34):
The last the first one I did was called Losing It.
And what's ironic about that special? It was really really good.
But my mother passed, so I had to bury her
on a Monday. I did it special that Friday, the
same week. So I had to bring it because why
would my mother want it? She would say bring it. Yeah,
she'd say, take me through that, take me through that.
You know what I'm saying. Yeah, So I had to.
(09:55):
I buried her. That was my heart and soul. So
I decided to just work on my crowd. Anybody said,
we ain't gonna do noing. I was working on it
every week I'm working on it. That's why this from
now called ain't playing. The reason it's really good is
I took some time and made sure that it was right.
I didn't want no roller coaster ride especial. You know,
(10:16):
something funny and then you go back down there something
funny and you go back. I want to be go up,
go up, go up up, and do like DJ call it.
And I stayed there, and I stayed there. You gave
me playing right there, I play it. So now it's
doing so well. It's doing very well. Thank God for Jesus.
They I had a meeting with them on Tuesday, and
they want to do another one. So I'm gonna give
(10:37):
you all another one. I'm gonna wait. But they got
to bring that bag. You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
They got to bring that bag, and bring that bag.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
They got bags, and I'm gonna make sure this when
it is good, it's the first one. So hey man,
big up to myself and my management, my agent and
and my family especially, you know. And hey man, it's
just fun. And I'm still having fun. And people always
say you always have fifteen minutes of fame. Always tell
the Maine started on mind yet I'm still having fun
(11:06):
that part, you.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
Know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
A lot of these young commedians need to understand when
you're on social media. With social media is good, it's
a good platform for everything now, but what you put
on social media, make sure you have more than what
you put on social media. When people come out and
see you, make sure you got something else to give them.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Right.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
I told one community, I say, man, I got a
show for you. Man, it's a you know, one night
or and if you know Bruce, Bruce asks you about
the show, I'm gonna make sure you get paid.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
Right.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
First thing you said, well, how about.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Your paying that's a hold on player, Hold on, I say,
you ain't been seen walking by TV much less on TV.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
If I come to you and soide, I got your show,
I'm gonna make sure you get paid. So remember this,
young comedians, don't run it the money. Let the money
run at you. Yeah, And that's the slogan I got.
Yeah Wow that is.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
I was gonna ask you what an advice you had
for anybody that's trying to get into the business, either
if it's comedy, acting, TV or whatever.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
Ain't doubt Hey, man, you know these young cats got
a lot of new good stuff, man, but work on
your craft. Make sure you're right perfected and did. On
the second hand, make sure that your paperwork is correct
because we're watching, the arius is watching. They got people
to study that. So make sure you handle your business
(12:20):
as you go along so they won't hit you it
because they'll wait about ten years. You know you low
was one million, six hundred and seventy five thousand dollar. No,
handle your business as you go every year. Make sure
it's right. Get you some people that does it for
a living, and make sure it's right for you.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
Right yup, Gotta do that. Bruce. Bruce is in the building,
hang it out with us. Don't forget to go check
out that Netflix special. And next time he comes to town.
If you didn't get tickets to this show, he's gonna
do two shows. He's a two show comedian. You know
you might be three because Detroit loves you. Oh man,
you're a legend, You're an icon. Hey man, I appreciate it,
you know what I'm saying. So there's an honor improviuge
(12:57):
just to have you in the same studio, same room
with me. Because last time we talked, we were on zoom.
Yes we was. We were on zoom, yes we were.
But now we face to face, so that's good. I'm
glad the baby to meet you and hear those personal
stories that we were talking about before we got started.
It's because it's not for everybody. Some things you just
share amongst your your friends, your here. You know what
(13:19):
I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
But I'm gonna tell you that Motor City Casino is
a nice venue and it's very nice. So we'll do
two shows next time. We can do Friday and Saturday.
We just have fun with it.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, and get a buffet going or something
like that.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
Man, what you talking about? Okay?
Speaker 1 (13:35):
