Man, I think number one, to be a club winner
on behalf of New Orleans is not just a win
for me, but it's a win for the city, just
reflecting all the good and incredible work that goes on there.
I think New Orleans is a city that loves to
be hospitable, loves to care for its people, and how
do we kind of continue to put that on the

grand stage. I think this award has really been elevated
right to the forefront of the NFL, as it should be.
It's the most prestigious honor. It reflects the NFL and
what the NFL represents that it's not just this great game,
but it's about how we show up for people, how
to connect, how we take care.

And to be one of thirty two winners, I think
is a tremendous honor. This award wouldn't be what it
was what it is if the NFL hadn't moved it
to the forefront of his light. I think it's partners
like the Peyton family elevating his name's nationwide.

It, you know, to the level that it is today,
and it helps scale the work that players are doing.
I think players have this huge influence and the trust
of the communities. But when you have partners like the
NFL the nationwide expanding the reach of the work, you know,
pouring four million dollars into players causes, it's just incredible.

Man, blessed to be in a position that I'm in today.

Growing up?

Did you ever think that you would be in this
position growing up? Did you ever think to yourself, I'm
gonna have an opportunity to give back to my community
and give back to the youth. And what made you
say as soon as I get on, as soon as
I feel like I'm at that point where I can,
I'm gonna do exactly that.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Yeah, I think I knew I wanted to be in
the NFL when I was in the fourth grade. Okay,
you know, I had dream and envision and Walter Payton
was actually one of the people that I looked up
and idolize and kind of tried to model my life
after way before I knew how how big of an
influence that he was having in the community. I just
wanted to kind of model my game after him because
I played running back. But I think at an early age,
(02:13):
I was with my grandmother and we would always go
around to the community and take care of the sick
and shut in and so I saw it at the
early age, and that's just how I grew up and
what I knew as I got in high school, and
I kind of saw the gap that was happening between
me and my peers just in the education system, and
it was little things like reading comprehension and math literacy,
and those things were what I started to notice that
(02:36):
I wanted to have some type of impact on.

And that's when we got in the league.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
My wife and I really got to work on education
and creating solutions around education and closing the gaps that
existed in the community and the gaps that was existing
in students. With this one size fit all modeling, you
how do you work towards that? And the work just
got expanded and having partners, you realized that, man, we
could do so much more together that we can never

do a part And that's what you see on display
to day. You know, with the partnership of NFL, the
Payton Family nationwide, the players, all the work that's been done,
the impact that we have in community is exponential. And
I think being here at the Super Bowl and we're
talking about community work, it just it just shows you
how big the work is and how how much it
actually matters. And this week will have players, all the

man of the Year will meet and collaborate on ways
that we can continue to work together and find ways
to impact community. And so I say, it's a gift
that just keeps on giving.

I want you to talk about this because I think
it's important for people to hear your message. I think
it's important for people to understand where you're coming from.
Growing up, it hasn't been always been easy. So you
find yourself in the NFL, you find yourself.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Ah's all good.

We already talked about you being able just to give
back to the community, but you started talking about the
gap in literacy and like that, you talked about your
grandma's showing you things. What message do you want to
say to the kids out there that may not have
the grandma showing them things that may not really understand.
You know, why is this gap so far? We're blessed
(04:15):
to be in the positions that we're in. You're extremely
blessed to be in the position that you're in. You,
what message would you say to young you or a
young kid from where you're from.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Don't never stop believing in you, no matter what's happening.
Don't ever stop believing in you. I was in high
schools and I got expelled from school. Okay, there, I
was at the alternative school. Life headed in the wrong direction.
Several times. I almost lost my life. I get to college.
My first year in college, I go to jail. I mean,
there was so many ways that I could have derailed
my life, but there were people who were standing in
(04:43):
the gap for me, and I never stopped believing in me.
And then once I got my relationship right with God,
it really changed the trajectory of my life. And it
was a few mentors that that really, you know, started
to help bring me along and disciphle me and change
my life.
Speaker 4 (04:58):
And that's why I believe in mentors so much.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
You know, belief is a powerful thing, and sometimes people
don't believe in themselves, and so when somebody steps in
their life and believes in them more than they believe
in themselves. You you, you kind of ignite something inside
of them that may have been the light that may
have been dimmed, or they may be a little loss
and just need to be you know, help put back
on the right track.
Speaker 4 (05:20):
And you never know what comes from.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
If the people hadn't invested in me like the way
that they did, my life would look radically different. And
so that's why I go back with the intent into
the communities. And it's really about the stories. It's not
about metrics. They ain't about man, we've helped these thousands
and thousands of young people like no, it's the stories.
This man, this this kid was dealing with this in
his home life and we stepped in and now he's here.
(05:43):
People that we've poured into a now you know, planning NFL,
they're they're working in hospitals, there, went to iv Belize
schools and it's just because you took the time to
step into gap for them and and they helped reshape
their life.

Talk about the new the New Orleans Saints a little bit.
Of course, we've follow the Saints from Fresno because of
Derek when he was there Jay Caner briefly being there.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Yeah, what are the Saints got to do to turn
things around? Oh?
Speaker 4 (06:09):
Man, it's turned around. It's turned out okay.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
I like the way you said that. I like the

And you know, all all great organizations are going to
go through ups and down. It's really about being able
to sustain all Paul and I think the organizations did that,
you know, post Drew Brees era, just trying to let
the dust Settle's kind of been some woes in there,
but we've held the course. I think it's been some
I've got a chance to be a part of some
great leadership as we've kind of had to keep the

ship steady. But at the back end of the season,
I think all the players felt it, that the community
felt it that, you know, the ship, the ship has
a writer's course. Now it's just about picking up some
momentum and going with it, you know, finishing the season
on the four game win streak and almost a five
game win streak, you know, feeling like you have the
quarterback of the future in place, defense playing at a
high level. I think it's a lot for the Saints
(06:56):
to be excited about heading into this offseason.

You just said, you feel like you have the quarterback
in the future. And you know what, watching this team,
I think you guys, do you guys believe in him?

Yeah?

Absolutely, And and we have some guys who came in
and did a good job.

Derek was one of those guys.

Man that it really was just kind of helping sustain
the ship in the middle of his arm. It was
a lot of pieces being changed, head coaches kind of
going in and now offensive cording is going in, and
now a lot of pieces kind of changing in the
building and that and and and and Derek did a
phenomenal job with it as one of my good friends
and enjoyed the time I got a chance to spend
the time with him.

And but now what we are with the defense kind
of playing at the level is played. And you know,
with a new coach and you know, a new system
in place, you can feel it. You can feel the
tide has truly turned. And Tyler Shuck had a phenomenal year.

earn Rookie.
