(00:00):
Look who is joining me right now, my guys, Stephen Hennessy from the
Golf Digest. The Golf Digests doingbig things right now. As a matter
of fact, I believe they justreleased the top one hundred courses in the
country. Stephen Hennessy. You there, what's happening? Was going home,
Stephen Hennessee nothing must man, Sothe top one hundred courses, Yes,

(00:22):
sir, you know what. Quicklyrun through the process of picking the top
one hundred courses and go ahead, enlighten us with the top ten. Yeah,
for sure. So today's an excitingday at Golf Digest. We publish
our rankings every two years. Sothe hundred, Greatest and second hundred went
live today on golf digest dot com. Exciting new experience. You could basically

(00:45):
click into every course and see photosof every course, drone footage of a
bunch of these great courses, reviewsfrom our panelists. Basically, how it
works, how we rank them.We have nineteen hundred course raiders around the
country and they go and based ontheir travels, they evaluate the courses that
they play. We throw all thescores into a calculator. It's a little

(01:10):
more sophisticated than that. But it'sreally just the averages of all those scores
at the end of every two years. You know, it's not a smoke
filled room of editors. Of courseshould go above which it's very scientific.
You know, it's been you know, there's accounting done by KPMG all that.

(01:32):
It's it's very buttoned up and yeah, the editors themselves have nothing to
do with it. It's all bythe golfers for the golfers. So it's
great. I want to clarify thisbecause many people, probably like man Stephen
Hennessy, was locked in the lab. He had glasses of whiskey and cigars
and they were analyzing the courses beyondbelief. Yeah, whichever course paid me

(01:56):
now number one. No, that'snot quite how it works, no,
I mean it's based upon a tonof data from our raiders actually playing the
courses, evaluating them based on aset of criterias from challenge to shot options,
conditioning, etc. And the topten doesn't change too much year to
year, but this year there's actuallya very big change. For the first

(02:20):
time ever, Pebble Beach has fallenout of the top ten. So we've
been doing this ranking Wait a minute, y'all don't have no love for the
West coast. No, I mean, I'm not quite sure how to explain
it. Definitely East coast bias.We have a ton of panelists out in
California, CK, a ton ofArizona panelists. There's a lot of West

(02:44):
Coasters. So okay, okay, you know what it really signals is we've
seen the shift of and you know, this is a quick twenty second tidbit
on this because I know your audienceisn't really as close to the golf course
as we are. But you know, all these classic courses like Southern Hills

(03:04):
last year for the PGA, theCountry Club, all these classic venues have
been renovated and restored to their originaldesigns, and Pebble actually has not been
touched too much recently. It's beenreally just redesigned heavily in the sixties seventies.

(03:24):
But it's kind of due for thatmaybe, and maybe this will show
Pebble that perhaps, um, youknow, it might be time to you
know, go go back to someof those old photos that you see.
You know, the seventh hole evenlooks so different. The seventh hole is
great, don't get me wrong, and me personally, I'd love Pebble Beach.
It's a place where I have somegreat golf memories. But um,

(03:46):
you know, it falling out ofthe top ten for the first time kind
of signals. Um, you knowwhat a lot of people have been saying
is that, you know some ofthe holes are maybe you know, it's
time for a little work to bedone there. It's been a while.
Obviously, the seventeenth green has beenredone, and the fourteen poles had some

(04:06):
work. But it's a big it'sa big deal that Pebble Beach has fallen
out of the top ten for thefirst time ever. And the one thing
I will point out is looking atthe top two, I said, hey,
let's break the top ten down. But looking at the top ten,
is it really a surprise that PineValley is number one? There you go
New Jersey East Coast bias. Thereyou got. But now Cyprus points right

(04:30):
there at number three. You know, people make the argument that that could
be number one in the rankings,But yeah, not not a surprise as
Pine Valley people regard that as perhapsthe best course in the world. I
would agree, just based on myexperience, And yeah, the top seven
were not changed. Sand Hills ateight moved up from number ten. That's

(04:55):
the highest it's been ranked. That'sthe club in the middle of nowhere to
Braska by Bill Cory and Ben Crenshaw. Yeah. The other ones are,
you know, the ones that havealways been the top ten, so Pine
Valley, Augusta, Cyprus, Shinnecock, Oakmont, Maryon, National Golf Links,
sand Hills, Fishers Island. Youknow, these are America's greatest courses

(05:19):
in't and I think we have agood top ten and I know that you
recently played Augusta, but I dowant to ask you this. A lot
of these courses, we all knowa lot of these courses we've seen on
TV. What is the best gemof a course that you've played in this
list where you're like, hey,you know what, I know, someone
may not put this on the bucketlist, but if you play here,

(05:41):
you'll be pleasantly surprised. I mean, there's so many. My favorite personally,
and I think it's two favorites andagain East Coast bias. But for
your West Coast listeners, if youmake a trip to me or two courses,
you have to play our sleepy HollowayCountry Club, which is ranked about
fifty six on our rankings. Ithink it deserves to be top thirty.

(06:04):
Our panelists, I guess, don'tagree, but it just gets better and
better. The views are unbelievable.I think it's as good as any place
that I've ever played. It's myfavorite. And then quaker Ridge, which
falls to the eighties this time around, which I think is criminal. I
think it deserves to be in theforties or fifties. I think it's as

(06:27):
good as Wingfoot, which is numbereleven on our rankings. And Jack Nicholas
said the same thing when they playedthe US Open there. He said,
it's actually a pretty good course rightacross the road, and that's quaker Ridge.
Those two are great. And thatshows you that I have nothing to
do with where the courses are ranks, because if they were up to me,

(06:49):
I would have both of them, you know, way higher on the
ranking. But but you guys werein a dark room whiskey cigars, going
over these courses, making them down, analyzing it, looking at footage.
I thought that was the way thiswhole process went down. Yeah, if
I was about forty years older, you know, in the seventies or eighties,

(07:11):
that's I think that's how that happens. Things have been more buttoned up
since then, doing backdoor deals withdifferent courses to make it inside the top
one hundred. Right, yeah, you know that Caddy treated me well that
a wing foot. Maybe maybe theyshould be up a little bit now,
you know what I will say thislooking at some of the courses the lower

(07:32):
part of the top one hundred,I'm sure courses like Piping Rock and Shooting
Star in Wyoming are probably super thrilledthat they cracked the top one hundred.
Yeah, it's a big deal toa club like that to make our hundred
Greatest for the first time, thatthe actually West Coast non biased Cow Club

(07:54):
out in San Francisco. That's beena criticism of our rankings that Cow Club
had never been in our hundred Greatest. It underwent a big renovation in two
thousand and nine by Kyle Phillips, who's you know, one of these great
great architects who does renovations, andit was number one on one last time.
Well it moved up more than thirtyspots, yeah, seventies. So

(08:16):
that's another great old venue that youknow has been restored. So yeah,
I mean I think it's a greatlist. Old Town Club also in Winston
Salem, North Carolina, is anothergreat old venue that was restored by cor
and Crenshaw. And I mean it'sit's really good. You look the photos

(08:37):
and you're like, man, Igotta figure out a way to get to
play that. Let's go ahead andtalk about golf Twitter for a second.
Let's talk about OGWR for a second. Let's talk about Phil Mickelson and Taylor
Gooch for a second. I'm sayingthis, and I want to clarify,
I do believe that they have tounderstand when they made a decision to go

(09:01):
to live there are certain consequences thatcome with making that decision. With all
that being said, as someone thatis a fan of the sport of golf
and wants to see the best weekendand week out, I think something needs
to happen about these rankings. Ithink something needs to happen about having an
opportunity for live players to make itinto these majors. For the sake of

(09:24):
the fans. I'm not taking sides, but for the sake of the fans.
Tell me, am I crazy forthinking this way? Nusk. I
think most people agree with you.At this point, and I think,
as we've talked about, I thinkthis year's Masters was the panaceas sorts.
You know, it's still finishing second, Brooks finishing second, them being so

(09:46):
highly ranked in the world rankings,I think fills up in the high four
hundreds in the world. Obviously,if someone finishes second and the Masters and
that's your world ranking position, that'sa sign that something needs to be done.
I think something will be done,you know, I think it's it's
tough. I am definitely on yourside. I don't know that fans necessarily

(10:09):
like it doesn't affect their appreciation ofthe US Open. If Taylor Gooch isn't
there. You know, the averagegolf fan probably doesn't even know who Taylor
Gooch is. To be honest,no offense to Taylor Gooch. I do
agree with you that it's wrong thathe's not there. It seems like the
USGA tweaked their eligibility and qualifications basedon, you know, trying to keep

(10:33):
Taylor Gooch out of it. Ifnot to think that, you know,
you kind of read the tea leavesand yeah, I'm with you there.
I think something needs to be done. I don't know what will be done
in the short term. You know, this year's majors are kind of set.
I think for next year. Itall kind of does revolve around the

(10:54):
world Ranking points. I think therehas to be some happy medium of giving
live events, giving world ranking pointsfor players who finish highly in live Maybe
we talked about this on our looppodcast this week. Maybe the guys who
finish top fives for the end ofthe season, those guys all get into
the majors next year, right, you know, there's a larger body of

(11:18):
work. It's not you know, someone just finishing in the top five of
a forty eight person event with afew poor players at the end and getting
into one of these events. Butit's the larger body of work. So
I think there will be a compromise, there will be a solution. Right
now, it's pretty messy and itdoesn't make sense, and I think at

(11:39):
this point everyone kind of agrees itdoesn't make sense. Yeah, it's very
frustrating because you have the people thatgo on and they're like, well,
that's what you get for taking theblood. I'm like, wait, wait,
wait, wait, wait, holdon, hold on, guys,
let's take all that out of theequation. Because that argument doesn't hold any
weight. We had a problem withogw are back when Roum defeated Rory and

(12:03):
Fitzpatrick in a full field on theDP World Tour, but yet he got
less than the tournament the week beforeon the PGA Tour. So a matter
of fact, I think he gotless than what just was awarded at the
Mexico Open for Tony Female. AndI'm like, don't you guys think that
this is not adding up and itdoesn't make sense. Yeah, there are

(12:24):
definite details of the world drinking thatyou could nitpick. I think now that's
being magnified based on these Live guys. For sure, You're right about that,
So you know, I get it, as someone says, these guys
made their decision knowing that they couldnever make majors again, they can never
make Ryder Cups. But you know, at this point Live has a longer

(12:48):
body of work. It's almost, you know, eighteen months into with events
where we kind of see what itis, and the last few events have
been kind of impressive. So Ithink it will if these guys continue to
play well in majors this year, that will absolutely cement that something will be
done with the world rankings. Um, you know, at the end of

(13:09):
this year, and I would expect, quite honestly, a few more of
these guys, you know, tofinish top five, top tens in these
majors. Taylor Gooch not gonna bein the US Open. They move the
goal post on him, obviously.Yeah, well, I mean, as
someone that just loves the sport, what are your thoughts about that. I'm
sure you guys have discussed this tothe Golf Digest as well. You know,

(13:31):
it's the US Open should be.It's open to everyone, right,
this is the most democratic championship thatwe have. You know, if you're
if you're a good player, andyou know you're any anybody could go and
try to qualify for the US Open. That's that's the greatest part about this
championship. That's what separates it fromothers. So to kind of see a

(13:52):
glimpse of something non democratic happening, and you know, like you said,
them moving the goal posts, itwould be hard for me to imagine this
wasn't intentional. In some ways,it's really tough to see this decision and
say, oh, well, theyjust happened to change the rule of you
know, the top thirty guys inthe Tour Championship getting in at the end

(14:15):
of the year, and they justhappen to do it this year, and
Taylor Gooch just happened to be numberthirty and he just happens to be a
live guy. Those are too manysteps. It'd be too much of a
coincidence. I am disappointed in it, you know. I think it is,
you know, evident of the largerpoint that all these ruling bodies and

(14:35):
golfs are working together. I don'tthink they're colluding against live players, but
they are making decisions sometimes that arecounter to the best interests of the live
players, and you know, Ithink everyone would agree with that. And
now whether whether it's their job togo further in the other direction and work

(14:58):
with the live players, well that'sultimately what has to be decided and will
kind of paint the course of whatgolf looks like on the professional level next
year, and that remains to beseen. But yeah, I do think
it is a little odd with theGoose stuff. They did announce it.
To be fair to the USGA,they did announce it. At the end

(15:20):
of twenty twenty two. We reportedit on Golfis dot Com in January,
and it kind of seems that TaylorGooch just noticed it recently, just made
light of it, and then hegoes and wins the last two events.
So now it's an uproar, andnow the USGA has has to answer these

(15:41):
questions and they are and people don'tlike those answers, but you know,
they did at least set those rulesyou months ago. So it's a tricky
situation for sure, as someone thatwatches the sport wants to see the sport
grow. I am really liking thefact that players are outspoken now. I

(16:03):
kind of like the fact that Philis really pulling back the curtain because he
doesn't have to. He's already exempt. He doesn't have to say anything.
He could stay quiet and he couldhave just rolled the wave of his number
two finish in the Masters or hisand everyone would have been like, man,
we love Phil. And he's notsaying anything, and he's he doesn't
have to be this guy that heis right now. But I think he's

(16:23):
at that point where he's like, you know what, I don't care.
I'm just gonna point out all theinjustices in the world of golf. I
just thought we were kept in thedark for so long. Yeah, it's
a great point. I think, you know, this probably ushers in more
transparency in the world of golf thanever before. I think it's a great
point. You know, Phil issuch an interesting character and always has been.

(16:48):
He's definitely kept things more hidden before. Now you're right, he's at
a point where, you know, let's put everything you know that's been behind
close stores, among PGA organizations,Let's let's open it up, you know,
to be fair, that's in hisbest interests, and he's protecting his

(17:10):
buddies on Live. Yeah, there'scertainly some things in Phil Nicholson's life that
he's not being open about and wantsto be fully open. You know,
people might want to go down thatroad as well. So you got to
be careful a little bit, now, you do, you definitely do.
You gotta be careful. I'm enjoyingthis a little bit. I like seeing

(17:32):
Taylor Goods, you know, kindof go off on Twitter. I like
seeing Phil open up. I'd liketo see these discussions because I think for
so long, and I'm gonna alsosay this on the flip side, we
haven't known very much about these golfersand I think that's been one of the
biggest reasons why the sport hasn't takenoff after Tiger, Because we knew Tiger,
we love Tiger. We put Tigerunder a magnifying glass, so anything

(17:56):
and everything we knew about it,But with these other golfers, we knew
nothing. And like I said onthe flip side, I love all the
videos that came out about Tony Femaleafter he won this last weekend. And
I'm not talking about him walking thecourse with his sons. I'm talking about
even seeing some of the videos ofhim just being goofy and silly on TikTok
with his wife. Those are allpersonality things that make you go, damn

(18:19):
it. I really like Tony Female. You know, I think this young
crop of great players, whether we'retalking about guys on the PGA Tour or
live, you know, they they'remore willing now to let you in behind
closed doors of you know, thisis what my life is like. And

(18:40):
you know that was sort of thecase before the Netflix show, but now
that's definitely the case after the Netflixshow. I think people are seeing how
much she could grow your brand byyeah, by bringing fans in, and
man, it's great for those ofus a who are in the content game.
We'd love the fact that all theseguys are so open. I still
can tweet every day, and youknow that's gonna really help us at golf.

(19:03):
That I just because we'll always havesomething to write about. But just
as you know, as consumers ofcontent, you know, with the Netflix
show, everything on social media.Yeah, I mean, it's a great
time to be a fan of golf, and I think more and more people
are finding that out. And that'sevident with all the increase in viewership numbers

(19:26):
for the Majors and some of theseother elevated events. So it's a great
thing. Yeah. No, I'ma big fan of what's going on with
golf. One thing that you tweetedout the other day that I thought was
right on the money. I believeyou were saying, hey, you know,
the Knicks game is already over andwe're still waiting for this final round
of golf to be done. Ikind of agree with you. There is
something to be said for saying, hey, you know what, I can

(19:48):
start watching this at ten and it'sgonna be done by three. When I
watched the PGA, I'm like, man, what is going on, Why
is this taking so long and halfof it is talking? Yeah, no,
I agree with you. I think, especially seeing what baseball has done.
You know, that was sport thatreally lagged on, but they've they've

(20:11):
made it a great product to watchon TV. You know, three hours.
Some of these games are less thanthat. Golf I think needs some
sort of shot clock or something,or they need to enforce penalties when guys
are really playing float. They traditionallyhave never done that in an actual PGA
Tour event. So I think we'recloser to something being done. But at

(20:34):
the end of the day, theplayers are the ones who control this,
and the players want to protect themselves. They and I get it from their
standpoint, they're playing for millions andmillions of dollars. Them taking an extra
thirty seconds on a shot that youknow, could be the difference between four
hundred thousand dollars. Like, it'stough to not see that side. But
on the other hand, it alsocould be tough to watch. Patrick can't

(20:56):
relay just doing nothing on the screenfor four minutes, so and sometimes it
is four minutes. Yeah, onehundred percent, because the producer, you
know, if he's in the mix, the producers go to him looking at
a shot and that's his pre shotroutine is just really slow. So you
know, I think we're going tosee less of Patrick Cantley on TV and

(21:17):
the immediate that's at least what willhappen. But something has to be done,
and I think something will be done. I'm just not quite sure if
they could figure it out in theway the baseball has, which is unfortunate
because I think that's kind of whatneeds to be done to really speed up
play. Let's talk about Rory. He's back. He was fine three million
dollars out of his pip mental break. Is that what they're calling it?

(21:41):
That's what he's claiming in it isat least Yeah, I don't know.
I mean, Rory's funny man.He he's been the darling of everyone in
golf the past couple of years, you knows, being the face of the
PGA Tour against Live and yeah,I mean he withdrew from his you know,
second designated event at the RBC Heritage. Why he did that, I'm

(22:04):
not too short, but he's obviouslycoming off the misscut at the Master's missing
the cut at the Players and look, I mean three million dollars is a
lot of money to anybody, butRory McElroy has a lot of money.
Whatever decisions he wants. I don'tthink that really hurts him right too much.
He knew again, he knew theconsequences of his actions. Yes,

(22:26):
if he wanted a break, thereyou go. But everyone else was in
Helton the head. So I thinkit's kind of a tough look. For
whatever reason. You know, he'ssaying that he get that week. Well,
he's back this week two people thatare missing Ram and Scheffler, which
I mean, if you kind oflook at the course history, you look
at Rory McElroy, you may sayhe took that break at the right time.

(22:48):
He's back at a course that helikes, He's back at a tournament
that he plays well at. Imean, Rory could be the odds on
favorite this week, depending on howyou look at it. Let's go ahead
and jump into the Wells far ago. First of all, before we do
that, we gotta give love totop ten. Tony. You love him,
I love him. The guy isamazing. He's good for golf.

(23:11):
Tony Female, congratulations on winning theMexico Open. I know that there wasn't
a lot of stars there, butanytime Tony wins, you know, I
celebrate him pacing. He went headto head with John Ram down the stretch
and you know, if you couldbe peak John Ram, I mean,
he's been, you know, soelite this year and he you just outplayed

(23:33):
him those last series six whole Sobig kudos to Tony. He's got six
wins now. It seems like yesterdayhe only had whatever it was too so
you know, his meteoric climb continues. So love to see it. And
I'm so frustrated because I was like, you know what, it's either gonna
be Tony or Ram. I don'tknow why I didn't use him at the
Mexico Open. I'm my gosh, and I'm the same way. At least

(23:56):
we should have been venting him.Yeah, and looking at all the stats
he was playing well, so thatwas definitely a mess on our part.
All right, Well here we go, wells Fargo, another elevated event.
Like I said, Rom and Schefflerare not there. Who do you like
this week? I'll tell you I'mleaning towards Hoblin for one and done.

(24:18):
Yeah, I love Hoblin at QuailHollow. This is a true ball striker's
paradise. It's such a long golfcourse, over seventy five hundred yards as
a par seventy one. There's suchan advantage to being really good off the
tea and having an elite approach game, you know. I think putting is
a little less here. I thinkaround the green is a little less as

(24:42):
well, So you gotta lean onlong ball strikers. So I'd love Hoblin
for that reason. I love CameronYoung as well. His caddy Paul Tassori,
who's Webb simpsons old caddy. WebbSimpson was a member at Quail Hollow.
He still is a member at Hollow, so to sorry knows this course

(25:02):
just about as well as anybody,so now Cam Young has him on his
team. He also loves to hitthe little fade off the sea. A
lot of these holes actually set theright to left shot for a righty,
so that's why Rory's also played wellhere. Rory's a great pick and I
fully expect him to contend he should. We'll see where the game is at,

(25:26):
but this is the perfect course forhim. I think someone not being
talked about too much. Again,we just talked about him and all the
negative stuff around him. But PatrickCan't Lay is probably playing as well as
anybody in the world right now,but all the people want to talk about
is his slow play. He's gainingmore strokes for around than anyone else in

(25:48):
the world. It's just to mefor Can't Lay at Quell Hollow, the
course history isn't quite there, sothat's the argument against him. But other
than that, I mean, theguys playing some insanely good golf and it's
a matter of time before he getsa win. I like the Can't Lay
pick. When you look at wherehe's going with his game, it just

(26:11):
feels like the time is now. This could be a good week for Can't
Lay. I like Hoblin. UnfortunatelyI use can't Ley already. I was
the idiot that used him at theTournament of Champions at the beginning of the
year, and I'm like, whydid I Why did I do that?
I don't know. But in insighttwenty twe who do you like as far

(26:33):
as some of the longer shots andwho are you definitely saying this would be
a good week to kind of fadethis player. Yes, it's Mary Kawa
for me, you know, it'snot like he's short, but on this
course he definitely needs some distance, and he's shorter than all these other elites.
So I'm gonna take a few matchupsagainst Marikawa. Don't don't really like

(26:56):
him here some longest shots. Ilike Keith Mitchell, I think, I
mean, it's perfect for this golfcourse. If I had to free it
a golf course in a video gamefor Keith Mitchell, it would be this
one. And he's he has twotop tens here before, and at this
point he's playing his best golf ofhis career by far. He's number one

(27:17):
on the PGA Tour in total driving. I mean, it would not surprise
me if Keith Mitchell wins. I'vebet him at sixty five to one.
I think that's a great number forhim. He's been playing great golf this
year, So I love Keith Mitchell. Corey Connors is an interesting one to
me because you know, the President'sCup was here on the fall, and
Corey Connors played some terrible golf atthe President's Cup. But you know,

(27:42):
he just won recently and this seemslike a venue that would sit him.
Maybe there's a little redemption on hismind, So I wouldn't quite rap him
off. I also haven't bet him, but I kind of think that's like
a sneaky good top ten pick atplus five hundred or so, because I
mean, he's as good a ballstriker as anybody, the same as Gary

(28:03):
Woodland in that same same area.Man, he just cannot but to save
his life. He's one of thebest ball strikers in the world. But
right he just finished his thirtieth everyweek because he can't, because he can't
put. He's gonna finish. Figureit out one of these weeks. We
had a lot to talk about today, and you know, I think that
has a lot to do with everythingthat's going on in the world of golf.

(28:27):
You know, some people look atwhat's going on with Phil and Taylor
and they're like, you guys, just shut up. This is not the
old boys club anymore. We're openingnew doors. The game of golf is
growing, and I think it's agood thing. I think we need to
learn to embrace it, and wehave to remember that we're not in the
fifties and sixties, and that it'sa good thing to kind of pull the

(28:48):
curtain a little bit, if youwill. Yeah, one hundred percent.
Transparency is always good. Ck.That's the same with our course ranking.
You know, the curtains are fullyopen. If anyone wants he scores for
any course, I'll send him toyou. And the same thing goes for
all these you know, ruling bodiesin golf and real quick, let them
know how they could check you outon the Loop. Yeah thanks, The

(29:11):
